Abigail Meech Hewitt was full of energy

Editor’s Note: In conjunction with March being Women’s History Month, Kathy Pasch has written a series of articles on women in history from Forreston. This is her second submission.

BY KATHY PASCH Abigail Meech was born Aug. 10, 1761 in Windham County, Connecticut. She was the daughter of a naval captain.

Young Abigail developed an attraction for a neighbor boy by the name of Robert Hewitt.

That boy responded with the gift of a string of gold beads before he enlisted in January, 1776 at Stonington, Connecticut. She was 15 and he was 25.

There was a revolution going on and he must take part. Robert was in the cavalry and did scouting duty, serving in Col. Lattimar’s Regiment during the surrender of Burgoyne and the battle of Saratoga.

Throughout the course of the Revolutionary War and many narrow escapes, he was gone for seven years and Abigail never heard from him.

Robert returned home from the war in 1783, went back to farming, and soon married Abigail on Dec. 11 at Preston, Connecticut. Their first child was born March 14, 1785 followed by 12 more.

Those were the days when children were born at home with possibly the help of a mid-wife if time allowed. One child died in infancy. Abigail was forty-nine when their last child was born in 1810.

In 1815, Robert and Abigail and their large family moved to Washington County, Maryland. Three years later, Robert applied for a pension. Shortly after, Abigail and Robert went to live with their son George W. in Middleburg, Pennsylvania.

Abigail did all in her power for her children, and George had received a fine education and become a teacher. At son George’s home is where Abigail’s husband died on Nov. 5, 1829 at 79.

Still another son, Robert had become a successful merchant and land speculator which is the reason the Hewitt family came to Illinois in the 1840s.

Another daughter, namesake Abigail, had married Charles A. Haller and their family came west from Boonesborough, Washington County, Maryland in 1846 along with her mother Abigail Meech Hewitt who was in her 80s.

The trip west was made in a covered wagon and took about six weeks. The trials of that journey would be many in this rough and unsettled land. But that land soon showed signs of settlement when David A. Neal and George W. Hewitt platted the town of Forreston.

When Abigail Meech Hewitt’s future daughter-in-law Susan Emerick traveled to Forreston in 1855, she described the trip in her diary: “The prairies stretch away on every side as far as the eye can see til you become quite tired of the sameness. Little of the land is cultivated.

Dixon is a beautiful town and the Rock River is the prettiest stream I have yet seen. Pecatonica is a little wooden place just starting.”

Abigail Meech Hewitt was a woman of great energy and was known to reminisce to her grandchildren about her childhood.

She was 11 when the capture by the British occurred, with memories of the taxation, the “tea party” in Boston Harbor, and the Revolutionary War. During her final months of life, she would experience a nearby prairie fire, a train derailment, and a Typhoid epidemic.

On Nov. 5, grandson Charles M. Haller would write in his diary: “Grandmother Hewitt is poor enough to die.”

Her final days were spent with daughter Abigail in Mt. Morris and she passed away on Nov. 15, 1855 at the age of 94. A funeral ceremony was held there.

Haller records the experience in his diary: “We started for Forreston to place of interment. Uncle George and Aunt Margaret, Uncle John and Mother in one carriage. Cousin Thomas and Sister Sarah in a buggy, brother George and Cousin Filo Hewitt and myself in a spring wagon. After warming at Mt.

Morris we were joined by Wm. Tice and three ladies.”

Abigail Meech Hewitt was one of the first burials in Hewitt Cemetery. Lots there were not sold, family members cared for their member’s graves.

In recent years, the stepping stone bearing the Hewitt name and used as one alighted from a buggy or wagon was unearthed. It once again graces the entry to the old pioneer cemetery with its iron fence.

Visiting it today, one can almost picture the members of the Hewitt family as they paid their last respects on that cold November day to “One of the 76.”

COVID-19 UPDATES

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman said he’s seen several cases of fully vaccinated individuals testing positive for COVID-19.

The national Centers for Disease Control has gotten involved, said Auman, who presented the information to the Ogle County Board last week.

“We have six (cases) sent on for additional testing, and those will be sent to the CDC. There’s a couple more, too,” Auman said at the March 16 meeting.

Lab results on those cases are still outstanding, he said Tuesday.

The COVID-19 cases occurred at a county nursing home, which he declined to name. All those infected were at least 14 days out from their second vaccine dose and for some it had been almost 30 days.

They included a mix of symptomatic and asymptomatic cases, and some have been hospitalized, Auman said.

It is not known if the cases were caused by a COVID-19 variant.

“It being a possible variant is a big question right now,” Auman said. “The CDC is very interested in that, and we hope to find out more. It is certainly concerning. They have a high rate of vaccinations in that facility. There’s a lot we need to look at. Hopefully we can learn more. I’m not sure when we’ll know more. It’s up to the lab.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health, which gets involved any time there’s an outbreak in a nursing home, surveyed the facility and determined protocols were followed. After he realized there were more than a few breakthrough cases, the CDC was brought in, Auman said.

The IDPH takes the testing specimens and forwards them to the CDC; it will collaborate with the CDC going forward, he said.

There are no plans for the CDC to come on site at this time, but he has been on conference calls with Kyle Auman the agency, Auman said.

“It’s really too early to tell” if the cases are being caused by a variant, or are just those that are expected to crop up, Auman said.

The double-dose vaccines work in only about 95% of the population, which means for every 100 people who are fully vaccinated, five might not be fully protected. The number of cases the health department is seeing is higher than expected.

“That’s the million-dollar question: Is it normal spread of that 5% or is it something different? They’ve looked at how it was administered and ruled out any issues with that. Is it a variant strain or something to do with individual

patients?”

Ogle County, which has a population of less than 51,000, has seen other unrelated breakthrough cases and is working on other potential breakthroughs, but countywide, the total number still is less than 10, he said. He’s heard that other counties also are seeing breakthrough cases.

Whiteside County has had two breakthrough cases recently, spokesman Cory Law said in an email. Lee County has had four, and Carroll County none, according to the IDPH Statewide, of the 1.8 million people in Illinois who have been fully vaccinated, 217 had a positive test for COVID-19 more than 2 weeks after receiving their last vaccine dose, IDPH spokeswoman Melaney Arnold wrote in an email.

As of Tuesday, four of those were hospitalized because of to COVID-19; nine were hospitalized but investigations are pending as to whether they are related to COVID-19; and three were hospitalized but not for reasons related to COVID-19, Arnold said.

The IDPH shares information on breakthrough cases with the CDC, which does not always show such an interest as it has in Ogle County.

“They [the IDPH] were prepared to deal with breakthrough cases, and the CDC was debating whether or not they would take this on,” Auman said. “They’re dealing with other situations much larger. They have teams dedicated to breakthrough cases. They also have to deal with statistics, and this situation didn’t meet their criteria for investigation.

“But it interested them enough.”

Department pleads with public after new uptick

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department put out a press release March 19 to notify the public of multiple potential exposures and an increase in county cases. “[The OCHD] has been investigating several COVID-19 outbreaks with links to manufacturing, bar events/pub crawls and school sports,” a press release said. “Our positivity rate has been increasing steadily over the past several days.

The state of Illinois is so close to entering the bridge to phase five, but we are currently heading in the wrong direction with the amount of COVID activity we are currently experiencing in Ogle County.”

The release asked residents to follow tactics to reduce spread of COVID-19 and consider getting tested especially if they are experiencing any symptoms.

OCHD Public Administrator Kyle Auman said the western half of the county specifically is see-

ing an increase in cases when the rest of the state is seeing a decrease.

“The goal is to educate individuals to get tested,” Auman said. “We’re seeing a lot of mild symptoms. We’re getting a lot of pushback and people not wanting to participate in tracing and testing. Our goal is to keep people safe.”

Auman believes the uptick can be attributed to a number of things including fatigue of dealing with the pandemic for over a year. The Center for Disease Control has warned against an additional spike, and Auman said this could be the beginning of it if the community decides not to participate.

Auman said the OCHD has linked cases to the Oregon St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl that took place March 13.

“We’re concerned about that type of activity,” Auman said. “There’s a high risk of transmission. A good chance a lot of people could get it.

We’ve reached out to several local businesses and restaurants about participating. We’re hoping people will get tested and provide information.”

With the state’s plans for additional reopening while Ogle County sees increases, Auman said he’s concerned and has talked to the Illinois Department of Public Health about what that means and it offered support.

“We hope to get it under control,” Auman said.

“Our contact tracers are working so hard. But they’re being told people don’t want to participate. That’s concerning.”

Meanwhile, COVID-19 vaccinations have ramped up and Auman said the OCHD is working on additional partners and pharmacies.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will likely be received by the end of the month, Auman said.

The state and federal government’s plans to open up vaccinations for more populations in the coming months is good news for Ogle County, Auman said, if things stay on track.

“It all depends on allocations,” Auman said.

I can’t say what they’ll be in months, but we’ve made serious progress. I only see availability and access increasing. We may not have everyone vaccinated by May, though.”

Bald eagle injured in Ogle County now in rehab Bird of prey is now at Hoo Haven after being hit by car

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com After working on her share of bald eagles over the years, Karen Herdklotz still feels a chill when she sees one up close.

She felt that on March 11 when an injured bald eagle was brought into Hoo Haven in Durand after being hit by a car in Ogle County. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recovered the bird and had it transported to the center for rehabilitating and releasing sick, injured and orphaned North American wildlife.

Herdklotz, owner of Hoo Haven, said Friday the eagle was in “guard” condition and in shock when it was brought in, which it was being treated for along with blood on its wing.

Herdklotz’ rule of thumb is 72 hours after an animal is brought on to determine its outlook.

“By Sunday evening if he continues to get better, that will be a good sign,” Herdklotz said.

“Sometimes things can go bad. That’s phase one.

Phase two is all is well and eating on its own and no assistance, then it’ll go into a bigger area to move around. And then it would go into a flight pen. If everything goes well after that it would get

released.”

Herdklotz said the eagle appears to be an adult male.

“There’s still a chill when you see them and their size and the white head and tail and gold beak,” Herdklotz. “Females are bigger, but he’s a nice sturdy, stocky young man.”

Hoo Haven considers working on bald eagles to be an honor and a privilege. A special license is required to do so.

Bald eagles are no longer endangered, but the responsibility is still felt, Herdklotz said.

“If you lose an eagle, you need to be able to say you did everything you could,” Herdklotz said.

“If you can give something love and warmth and make it pain-free, then everyone has served a good purpose.”

Hoo Haven is accepting donations to help with the bald eagle and the rest of the 60 mammals and birds currently in its care. Red and cuttable meat such as steak and roast can be dropped off any day from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monetary donations can be mailed to Hoo Haven, 10823 Cleveland Road, Durand, IL 60124.

Keeping a watchful eye out while outdoors and on the road can also be a help, Herdklotz said.

“When you find an animal and stop and help and make a call, it means the world,” Herdklotz said. “Most people drive by and think someone else will call or help. It takes everybody. We really appreciate it.”

Oregon VFW Post 8739 will have a Vietnam era veterans appreciation breakfast on Monday, March 29 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

William Hamilton surveyed county into townships Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

hen John Phelps, Oregon Founder, traveled to this area from Galena he met an earlier acquaintance, William Hamilton, surveying this area into townships.

He was commissioned by the United States General Land Office. The Public Land Survey System known as the Rectangular Survey System was created by the Land Ordinance of 1785 to survey land ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Paris in 1783 following the end of the American Revolution.

This Rectangular Survey System was proposed

by President Thomas Jefferson. The government wanted to distribute land in the Northwest Territory to Revolutionary War soldiers in reward for their services as well as selling this land as a way of raising money for the nation.

Before this Rectangular Survey was adopted property lines were based on local markers and bounds drawn by humans, often based on topography.

A typical example under this system might read: “From the point on the north bank of Muddy Creek one mile above the junction of Muddy and Indian Creeks, north for 400 yards, then northwest to the large standing rock, west of the large oak tree, south to Muddy Creek, then down the center of the creek to the starting point.”

This rectangular Survey System is a system of lines used to find the location of any place on the surface of the earth and is called a grid system. It is made of two sets of lines that cross each other.

Latitude lines run in an east-west direction and the other set of lines of longitude run in a northsouth direction.

Theoretically a township is six square miles with each side one mile in length and contains 36 sections of one square mile of land. This is called a congressional township.

A civil or political township may be larger or smaller than a congressional township. Each township north of the equator is slightly smaller

So the northern boundary of each township is shorter that the southern boundary.

Principal North-South Meridians and EastWest Baselines are used to locate townships in Illinois. The Third and Fourth Principal run north-south through Illinois and the Baselines of the Third and Fourth Principal Meridians are used to locate properties in Ogle County.

Meridian Road follows the Third Principal Meridian from Pine Rock Township in Ogle County to Rockford. Meridian Road running North and South crosses Rt. 64 six miles east of Oregon, We have several 1872 maps of Ogle County at the Ogle County Historical Society. This is the year the Chicago and Iowa Railroad came to Oregon. This map shows townships, towns, cities and villages, land owners and the number of acres.

It contains an early history of Ogle County with illustrations of prominent buildings and a business directory for cities and villages. There was no index for this map.

Townships were arranged alphabetically by the township name. It is difficult to imagine that information and surveys for this map were obtained 33 years before the first car traveled through Oregon.

Other similar Ogle Co. Maps were published in 1912 and 1930.

Before 1841 Ogle County Land east of the 3rd Principal Meridian was purchased from the Federal Government Land Office in Galena. Just a reminder that you traveled to Galena by horsepower.

In 1841 land west of the 3rd Principal Meridian was available. This is when the Dixon Land Office opened. This had a huge impact on future land owners in Ogle County.

So in 1833 three years before Oregon was founded the Rock River Valley was surveyed into townships and eight years later in 1841 you traveled to Dixon to purchase land from the United States Land Office. 1841 is also when the first Ogle County Court House was built.

On Aug. 21, 2020 I wrote an article about the involvement of my aunt and uncle in the making of the atomic bomb at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I received several comments from others how they too had family members taking part in that Manhattan Project.

A number of weeks later my cousin sent me a picture of my aunt in the nursing home beside her bed that had a beautiful quilt on it. On the quilt was a book titled, “The Girls of Atomic City.”

The book answered many questions for me and you may be interested in what I found out as I read this book published in 2013 by Denise Kiernan. The storyline follows 16 women and 12 men who played a part in their lives. The author called them the “principal cast of characters.”

This New York Times bestseller tells the true story of the top-secret World War II town of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and the young women brought there unknowingly to help build the atomic bomb.

he ending of the book was just as interesting as the first and life went on in Oak Ridge.

Dot who had handled all the dials, knobs, and had watched the gauges, found herself finally in Hawaii. She had thrown a lei over the ship where her brother had gone down to his death. She had started work in Oak Ridge as a teenager but had aged immensely.

Vi, of the Oak Ridge Journal, spoke of how they had aged so fast in the small amount of time that they were all there. However, many simply wanted to remain in the community they had started and looked for new ways to keep their town going in view of this Atomic Age. Vi’s husband, Dr. Stafford Warren, had been at the helm of the Manhattan Project’s medical team and he eventually headed to Japan to study the effects of radiation. Many who had survived the initial blast were dying four to six weeks later from bone marrow problems.

Information from the bombings was closely guarded by the War Department. Japan itself kept the information controlled and after the Hiroshima bombing stated “two B-29s had caused a little damage to the city.”

General MacArthur attempted to keep journalists out of Japan. Reports of people dying many weeks later from effects of the bombings were called propaganda by US Military.

True information was very slow in getting out to the public of both United States and Japan.

Secrecy still seemed to be the order of the day.

Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the whole project and head of the lab at Oak Ridge went to pay President Truman a visit. It was October of 1945. The United States was the only one who had the bomb at that point and the president wanted to keep it all a secret.

Oppenheimer doubted that such information could possibly be kept from the world.

Oppenheimer also felt terribly guilty of what he had been a part of in the dropping of the bomb and he expressed his feelings to President Truman. It must have been a terrible thing to have

Eventually President Truman signed the Atomic Energy Act. With the close of 1946, the population of Oak Ridge was 42,465. Quite a drop from the 75,000 it had been 1945.

As Oak Ridge began to shut down areas, other parts began to change and develop. One part was turned into the Oak Ridge National Lab. This lab would start to research radioisotopes which would lead to cancer research for hospitals in our nation. They worked hand in hand with hospitals.

Recently my grandson, Andrew Obendorf was visiting in our home. We started talking about Oak Ridge and the making of the bomb.

Andrew is an architect for Skidmore Owings & Merrill. He suddenly said, “SOM did all the architectural layout for the Manhattan Project and he has the drawings.”

He was sent a couple of years ago to University of Tennessee at Knoxville to teach some classes on architecture. While there he was given a tour of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge National Lab. He said it is a wonderful lab in a beautiful area.

In the book, while there had been no post war plans for Oak Ridge, SOM was called upon once more to come through with some kind of planning. Some of the houses needed to be torn down while other homes were being sold to those who had been renting them.

The barriers of the military were now gone and

the town was wide open. A new Oak Ridge was underway.

Kattie, along with her husband, brought their children to Oak Ridge to live in one of the houses.

They now had new jobs and they looked forward to raising their family in this new community.

Dot took a job at the new museum when it opened in 1949. When asked how could she have worked on something that destroyed so many people, she replied, “Well, they killed my brother!”

Toni, soon married, continued to live at Oak Ridge as long as they had jobs there. Helen began working in the library and her job was to send out information to other libraries and labs across our country.

Colleen, who remembered seeing women walking in the mud carrying their shoes, ended up lecturing to schools about her job at Oak Ridge.

She was part of helping secure an International Friendship Bell “designed in Oak Ridge and cast in Japan” that would ring at various times.

All these women who held secret jobs during the Manhattan Project now focused on creating peace in the world.

2021 March Madness has offered true drama M

aybe it’s because of boredom over lack of sports over past year, but this year’s NCAA Men’s basketball tournament seems extra exciting. It has everything – close finishes, dramatic upsets, spectacular plays.

The only thing I could do without is the glut of commercials, which have become such an irritant.

Most of us don’t even know who the players are or where of the some of the colleges are located, but that doesn’t stop us from appreciated this well-crafted event. Compared to the boring college football playoffs with same teams year after year, March Madness is true drama.

As I was nervously watching the unlikely saga of No. 15 seed Oral Roberts advance to the Sweet 16 with one of my neighbors, I thought of how much emotional energy was being expended all over the country from people sitting in front of their televisions.

No sporting event sets the stage better for the underdog than March Madness.

Even if you are a Fighting Illini fan, you have to some appreciation for the job Loyola did in beating your team. I’m not calling a No. 8 seed over a No. 1 an upset because Loyola was superior.

They were better prepared, executing more efficiently and mentally tougher. And, did Sister Jean’s prayers help the team to victory?

I don’t think prayer is designed to allow a team to win or lose. It has more to do with changing

one’s heart and sometimes losing is better for you than winning.

Two years ago, one individual picked the first 49 March Madness games correctly. This year, the last perfect online bracket out of over 20 million filled out was gone after 28 games, a testament to the number of upsets and crazy finishes.

No one has ever done a perfect bracket and it would take a miracle to beat the 1 in 9.2 quintillion odds. Even nailing 49 like Greg Nigl did in 2019 was a 1 in 560 trillion long shot. The previous best was 39.

I wonder if March Madness is cutting into football attendance like it did to the IHSA state basketball tournament?

I caught part of Rochelle’s game on Saturday afternoon. To be honest, it was hard to muster up any enthusiasm for watching football in the spring.

My main point of going over that way was not to see the Hubs, but to visit my Mom and also watch more college basketball. High-school football still

hasn’t registered with me, the first time I’ve ever felt that way.

But, if I put myself in the shoes of a parent who had son playing Friday night at Polo for example, it would be much different.

Credit to Lean-Winslow for taking on perhaps the best team in 3A, Princeton. It was even with some of its best players sidelined with injuries, including Iowa recruit, Gennings Dunker in a boot.

The Panthers took an early 14-7 lead, but fell 35-14 on the road. Could last year’s state-championship team beat Princeton?

While elite 1A and 2A teams are fairly close, there is a more substantial difference between 1A and 3A in terms of physicality and line-up depth.

Sterling Newman found that out a few years ago when they got bumped up to 3A and had to play Byron.

What would be the odds of winning a game with the ball on your own 5-yard line and trailing 23-6 in the fourth quarter? That is where Wheaton Academy found itself against perennial power Bishop McNamara last Friday.

Remarkably, Wheaton not only came back to win, but did so by a 49-23 margin. In short order, they completed an 80-yard pass to cut the lead to 23-14 and intercepted four passes and recovered one fumble, converting all into touchdowns.

Maybe watching a finish like that would have rekindled my interest in football.

eingles@shawmedia.com At halftime of Friday’s season-opening game between Polo and South Beloit, it seemed like momentum was squarely in the SoBos’ favor.

Despite Polo scoring the first 12 points of the game, South Beloit had answered with a touchdown of its own late in the half and was set to receive the kickoff to open the third quarter.

But the Marcos opened that third quarter with an onside kick, recovered by Wayde Reimer, and used a steady diet of big plays on options to the outside and punishing Cole Faivre runs up the middle to pull away for a 52-26 win.

“We had a good start, missed on an opportunity that would have been huge,” Polo coach Ted Alston said. “At halftime it really felt like momentum had swung in their favor. Just kind of made some great adjustments from coach [Cliff] Bardell up in the booth, saw some things we were able to catch them on. He kept us on track, hitting them inside then outside with the option.”

Polo quarterback Tyler Merdian scored a pair of second-half touchdowns on options, the first a 40-yard run coming on the second play of the half, following Reimer’s recovery of the onside kick. The second was a 34-yard score on a fourth-and-six in the fourth quarter.

Hummer was able to find tight end Miles Beckham five times for 166 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown late in the game. Running back Fernando Balderas also had three touchdowns rushing.

But Polo came up with big plays as well, with Avery Grenoble scoring on a 78-yard kick return.

Polo (1-0) also got a big play on defense early, with a bad snap bounding off Hummer’s facemask and Balderas’ shoulder pad before hitting the turf, where Brady Clark recovered it at the SoBos 3. Polo scored on the next play.

“I just shot the gap unblocked, saw the ball on the ground, jumped on it,” Clark said. “Big change in momentum right there.”

But down 12-0, the SoBos answered with a 31-yard Balderas touchdown with 58 seconds left in the half to make it 12-8.

Polo’s lead could have been bigger, but for a pair of missed chances in the first half. A 54-yard gain by Wolber set the Marcos up with firstand-goal on the first drive of the game, but South Beloit was able to keep them out of the end zone. Early in the second quarter, Polo reached the South Beloit 9 before that drive stalled out.

“Just keep feeding him the ball,” Alston said. “He’s a big, strong, hard-nosed kid. He just needs the ball in his hands. For our offense, you can’t give up on it, you just have to keep feeding him.”

Coaches take new approach to spring season

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Oregon football had a meeting in January when plans for a season this year were unclear.

Head Coach Nick Schneiderman told his players not to wait around, to apply for colleges or make a plan.

“Don’t wait around for football,” Schneiderman said. “I didn’t think it was going to happen then.

It was a 180-degree turn. There’s been highs and lows. Drastic changes. We’re just happy to play.”

The state’s change of course brought about a five-game spring football season, which started up in recent weeks. Snow canceled and moved practices indoors. Basketball players had to jump right into helmets and pads.

COVID-19 took week one away from Forreston due to an outbreak. So far, things have been different, yet as-advertised.

“Just be ready,” Schneiderman said. “Anything can happen. We had a player parent meeting last night. We can do everything perfect and have two games taken away from us. Be strong-minded and make yourself better.”

Polo Head Coach Ted Alston said his team will focus on its “bread and butter” with less preparation.

He wants his team to do a few things really well. The amount of preparation has been scaled back.

Alston’s been impressed with his players so far.

They went from nothing to “100 miles per hour” in a matter of weeks.

He doesn’t want to overwork his players, most of which just came off a basketball court. There haven’t been 5:30 a.m. practices.

“A lot of it will be about the seniors,” Alston said. “Having them enjoy it as much as possible. For all the kids. We want to be competitive.

You’re getting a chance to improve the younger kids. I think the kids still want to prove they’re one of the best.”

preparation for next year. Polo still has some momentum coming off of its state championship last year, but not as much as it hoped it would.

“It’s been a little frustrating,” Alston said. “We all thought football would be back in the fall. We had a good summer and felt good about the fall.

Some kids haven’t gone out and we’ve had grade issues. Our team looks different than it would’ve.

It took the air out of our momentum.”

State health guidelines recently allowed more fans than anticipated for football games.

Alston thinks that will add to the experience.

Having people at games is huge in football, he said. It also means more normalcy for players.

They can play in front of more parents and classmates.

Schneiderman thinks the difference will still be noticeable.

“It still won’t be ideal,” Schneiderman said.

“Only two home games and three away. Those will be true away games but that helps to build a bond. Teammates become fans and have to get into the game. You’ve seen it in college basketball and football with no fans.”

Players are required to wear masks on the field to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Going in it was all about making memories,” Schneiderman said. “They won’t remember having the masks on, but they’ll remember the plays and moments in games. They’ll remember 2020.

What we don’t want them to have is regret.”

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Byron Station Response Committee has been working since last September to prevent the planned closure of the Byron Nuclear Plant, owned and operated by Exelon Generation.

The committee, made up of Ogle County organization representatives impacted by the potential loss of the plant and its tax dollars, is headed up

by Byron School District Superintendent Buster Barton and School District President Christine Lind.

The Byron School District received just over $19.1 million in real estate taxes from the plant

last year.

In addition to the school district, taxes from the plant also go to Ogle County, Rockvale Township, the Byron Fire District, Rock Valley College, the Byron Public Library District, the Byron Museum District, the Byron Forest Preserve District, the Oregon School District, the Oregon Park District and Kishwaukee Community College.

Saveilnuclearpower.com has been established as the organization’s hub for information and how to get involved in keeping Byron’s, as well as Dresden’s plant in Morris, open. The committee has met with local civic organizations, held virtual town halls and worked with local taxing bodies.

“There are so many factors to help move legislation forward,” Barton said. “Make a video, order a sign, donate to signs. We’re trying to inform people and let them know the movers and shakers and legislators. There’s template letters and emails. We did an economic impact analysis.”

Exelon has said it plans to close both plants

in September of this year. The Byron plant has around 700 regular employees. It was licensed to operate for another 20 years. The decision to close it has been “in the works for some time,” according to the Aug. 27, 2020 press release.

That release said the two plants face revenue shortfalls in the hundreds of millions of dollars because of declining energy prices and market rules that “allow fossil fuel plants to underbid clean resources”.

Exelon has not ruled out keeping the plants open if things change with policymakers. The Byron plant’s property value assessment has been under appeal without a decision from the state appeal board since 2012.

Ogle County Assessor Ron Kane told Ogle County Newspapers last year the parties were “about $300 million apart.”

In January 2019, the Ogle County Board of Review lowered the plant’s assessment from $546 million to $503 million, a seven percent decrease,

Continued from Page 11 after they heard Exelon’s assessment appeal and arguments against it from attorneys for the Byron School District.

Exelon asked for the assessment to be set at $188 million, while the school district requested a value of $625 million.

Barton said legislation to convince Exelon to keep the plants open will have to happen this year. Exelon’s finances are being reviewed by the state until April 1, Barton said.

Barton is not sure what potential legislation would look like, and said there are many directions it could take.

“Legislators have been touring the plants,” Barton said. “That’s progress. May 31 is when the 102nd general assembly retires. It would be great if it was sooner. We will need to have something this year.”

Lind said the committee has been in contact with nuclear power advocates to let legislators know about

impacts of a closure. The group has targeted April 1 to get behind legislation. She says she remains hopeful that a solution will come about to keep the plants open. But the short timeframe before the planned closure makes her “anxious.”

“I think it’ll be easier to determine when we see what a piece of legislation would look like,” Lind said.

“We’re trying to keep the troops rallied. We remain hopeful. It’s hard to say without legislation. Everyone wants something sustainable.

When this happened in 2016 to some other plants, there was a timeframe on it. We all want something more sustainable without an expiration date.”

Working towards keeping the plant open has become “almost a full-time job” for Lind since September. Barton has had to work on the issue while also navigating COVID19 as a school superintendent.

“It’s been challenging to say the least,” Barton said. “Two significant events happening concurrently take an inordinate amount of time, energy and support. Our communi-

ty keeps stepping up. Staff has been amazing. They’ve helped us push forward. It’s still a team effort.”

The Byron School District has also started to prepare for a substantial financial impact if the closures go forward. She said education would look “extremely different” and has looked at every possibility and cut that could happen.

Lind hopes some negotiating would be done to keep funding and legislation would need to be tweaked.

“We’ve taken steps to be proactive,” Barton said. “Most time has gone towards keeping it around.

We’ve talked with state officials on funding formulas that would vary.

Worst-case scenarios and taking proactive steps while trying to keep it open for many years to come. The plant wouldn’t go to zero overnight.

There would still be decommissioning and some revenue.”

Lind said trying to grow the movement during COVID-19 has been a challenge. Supporters can’t gather in a theater or in large numbers.

The committee has done some out-

reach and has found a “super supportive” community.

It has also found some that don’t realize the seriousness of the potential closure.

“I just want to make sure people understand,” Barton said .”Sometimes I don’t think people understand the possibility exists. They don’t think it could go away. They need to know that.”

“We meet with groups and people say Exelon says this all the time,” Lind said. “We lay out the facts and they’re surprised. They realize it’s serious.”

When asked if he believes the plants will remain open past September, Barton remained positive.

“Knowing what I know about nuclear energy and its benefits, I remain cautiously optimistic,” Barton said. “But I don’t take anything for granted. I know we have work left to do and keep advocating and informing. Nothing is guaranteed.

We have work left to do, especially with legislators. There’s no crystal ball.”

Multiple area governing bodies have approved amendments to their Lee-Ogle Enterprise Zone ordinances in recent weeks to pave the way for townhomes to come to Oregon in coming years.

The plan is for 48 units in 24 townhomes near South 2nd Street in the area of Carnation Park, located on the southeast side of the town along the west bank of the Rock River.

Hvarre Development, which operates in the Sauk Valley, is the project’s developer.

“This will be a 55 and older development,” Oregon City Administrator Darin DeHaan said. “We agree with the developer that this has the potential to help free up existing homes for young families. We are aware that our housing market has very little inventory currently.”

The starting price point will be around $165,000, DeHaan said.

There will be a homeowners association and the streets will be privately owned.

Hvarre has several developments in Dixon, and plans are to build more in conjunction with the Oregon project.

The city is working to include a bike path that will connect with 2nd Street along the river as well.

“We are excited to see this project come to Oregon,” DeHaan said. “There is a lot of work left to be done, but I wanted the community to have a better sense of what is being planned and discussed.”

The Oregon parcel is 9.48 acres. The first area in Dixon is 4.8 acres a block from the Rock River. The third is in south Dixon on 13.26 acres with a large amount of trails for a 70-unit community.

Oregon Mayor Ken Williams said the duration of the project will be about three years.

Historically, the enterprise zone hasn’t been used for housing projects and has been aimed at job creation and industry.

Members of the enterprise zone are recommending the project move forward, Williams said.

Williams said Hvarre will be using the enterprise zone to relieve him of paying sales tax on building materials.

“That can be a significant help,” Williams said.

A grass paver path will be added for additional access for fire personnel, Williams said.

“Our community really needs affordable housing,” Oregon Finance Commissioner Terry Schuster said. “That pressure has been building and this is an excellent solution.”

New life planned for old building in Mt. Morris

This year, they’ll be starting a business together that they hope will revitalize Mt. Morris, starting with its downtown.

Wesley 1895 will consist of a butcher shop and bakery, and later, a farm-to-table restaurant. The pair purchased property located at 13 S. Wesley Ave including the adjacent lot where the Penner building was late last year in a deal facilitated by the village board. $1.1 million will be invested in the development of the business.

“There’s a risk here,” Nelson said. “But I think this community deserves a business and marketplace like this. This is to revitalize the Mt. Morris community. If we’re the next step, that’s what I want to do. I was raised here. I want to see it prosper and do well.”

Orchard have become community staples.

Nelson plans to use his livestock experience to Wesley 1895 after noticing flaws in the food supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic. He wants to get more local products to the community after conversations had with area residents.

As a small livestock producer, Nel-

son saw meat packing plants close, leaving producers high and dry with delays and decreased return on investment.

“There are fewer and fewer places taking livestock,” Nelson said. “I want to change that and bring power back to the consumer. I have a lot of conversations with the older generation. The relationship they built

with a butcher shop. I want to get back to that. Convenience. Knowing where your food comes from.”

The pair decided to go into business together after the village’s economic development group noticed they had similar desires and put them in touch. Conversations have

gone on for over a year-and-a-half.

Warren said a part of him is glad conversations have taken “a bit” so the business wasn’t trying to start in the heart of the pandemic. Now isn’t good timing, but it could have been worse.

The pair have learned lessons from the pandemic and plan to incorporate them into Wesley 1895.

“We can design more towards COVID-19-friendly practices like drive-up and having space for social distancing,” Warren said. “Things that may be parts of our world’s new way of life.”

Warren and Nelson plan on outdoor seating for the restaurant, due to its proximity to the Mt. Morris downtown events like the Kable Band concerts in the summers.

“The simple answer is revitalizing downtown,” Nelson said. “Every Wednesday as a child I’d go and watch the Kable band play. It’s a perfect little spot. I want to highlight that and be a part of it. Down the road I want every building in that area to be full of life. We’ll offer another experience.”

We want to do the small things great. That’s the vision.”

The village will be reimbursing Wesley 1895 for a total of $200,000 in TIF money during the development, which Warren called “instrumental” and will help with the visuals, structure and “bones of the building.

Locus offers a calm, quiet space in downtown Oregon for workers to do their thing

bweidman@shawmedia.com Elizabeth Priller is in the business of helping people handle their business in a better, more effective manner.

Priller is the founder and chief wellness officer of Locus Coworking and Wellness Space, l217 W. Washington Ave. Latin for “space,” Locus is a place where people can do their work in a stress-free, healthy environment.

“How this started was, about a year ago, right around when the pandemic hit, I was working from home with my consulting company,” said Priller, a registered nurse who also does consulting in that field. “What I was finding was, the dogs were barking, the mailman was coming, the phone was ringing – there were all these different distractions, and I was starting to get really stagnant in my work.”

That put Priller, 40, on the path toward Locus. She visited the site three times before deciding this was the spot.

“This is a newer concept to the area, but not a new concept,” she said. “Co-working spaces have been around for about 10 years, but there wasn’t such a need in this area until the pandemic hit. We started looking at work differently. That’s my goal – to start transforming the way people look at work.”

Locus, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, has space for four people in the main room, and one in the back, with desks, chairs, speedy internet and a soothing environment conducive to focusing on getting work done.

“Initially I opened this place for me,” Priller said. “It was going to be my office. I was sitting in the back and I realized, wait a second, I’ve got this huge space, and there has to be more people in our community amid the pandemic who are working from home or starting new businesses and don’t feel like they need to get a whole retail space just for their business.

“I started doing the market research, and not only did I realize there is nothing like this around the area, but there is not a wellness-focused co-working space. Using my experience as a registered nurse and as a yoga teacher, I combined the two practices to help people.”

Priller also is working with the Social Entrepreneurship Program at Oregon High School, where those students can get together 1 day a week to discuss different ideas. They painted the Locus logo on the east wall of the building.

There’s also an aromatherapy bar with a selection of scents to help with focus and mood.

Down the road, once COVID-19 is a thing of the past, she hopes to have an open mic night, where locals can sing, tell jokes and generally have a platform to display talents.

The backbone of the business, however, is to provide clients with a proper environment to be at their best when it comes to their jobs.

“What I am looking for is an oppor-

tunity to provide a space for people, not only where they can work, but where they can feel good in their mind and body to do their work,” Priller said.

“It goes beyond just having a desk or having wi-fi. What this is is a space

ehinton@shawmedia.com A home in the Mt. Morris Estates Mobile Home Park was destroyed by an early morning fire on Wednesday, sending one resident to an area hospital for treatment.

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough said the Ogle County 911 center received multiple calls at 2:07 a.m. reporting the fire at lot #99, 3747 W. Illinois 64, on the east side of Mt. Morris.

“Mt. Morris Fire was dispatched to the scene, along with AutoAid Companies from Leaf River, Oregon and Polo. Mt. Morris Fire arrived on scene and found an approximately 14’ x 70’ mobile home with heavy visible fire throughout, with structural collapse,” Hough said in a press release.

Due to intense flames and exposure to the west of the home, another mobile home caught fire, he said.

“Reports from dispatch and neighbors were that all the residents had self-evacuated and were accounted for,” Hough said. “Mt. Morris fire companies attacked the rapidly growing fire while simultaneously requesting a second alarm assignment.”

Hough said both occupants were treated by Mt. Morris Fire EMS for smoke inhalation. One occupant was transported to KSB and later transferred to OSF St. Anthony’s in Rockford. The other was treated on the scene and refused transport.

No firefighters were injured, he said.

The fire was declared under control at 2:54 a.m., with most mutual aid companies released by 4:30 am. Mt. Morris firefighters cleared the scene at 4:53 am.

“The structure is uninhabitable and is deemed a total loss,” Hough said. “Initial damage estimates to the building are $40,000. This estimate is including any of the residents’ personal contents.”

Mt. Morris Fire did request a MABAS Box 14 to

the second alarm level for additional assistance from Advanced Ambulance of Dixon, Byron Fire, Dixon Rural Fire, Forreston Fire, German Valley Ambulance, Leaf River Fire, Oregon Fire, Polo Fire, and Stillman Fire.

The Mt. Morris Fire Department along with the State Fire Marshal and Ogle County Sheriff are investigating. The investigation is still ongoing, Hough said.

OBITUARIES VIVA J. DINGMAN POLO – Viva J. Dingman, 73, of Polo, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Polo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Viva was born October 30, 1947, in Sterling, the daughter of Wayne and Faye (Spinden) Dingman.

She retired from nursing after 40 years.

Viva loved helping others, as a nurse this always had a special place in her heart.

She enjoyed being outside, walking, sitting in the sun or by a fire sharing stories.

Spending time with family and friends is what brought her the most joy.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherri (Daryl) Beers of Polo; sons, James (Aimee) Fuller of Lyndon and Richard (Karina) Fuller of Tennessee; sisters, Eva (Warren) Patten of Rock Falls and Linda (Junior) Eastabrooks of Milledgeville; grandchildren Megan Beers, Dylan Beers, Alexis (Tanner) Grobe, Natalie (Travis) Mills, and Evan Fritz; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Moriah, and

Brantley.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

ELLIOTT S. FRY DIXON – Elliott S. Fry, 41, of Dixon, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at his home.

Elliott was born April 29, 1979, in Sterling, the son of Larry and Gloria Fry. Elliott, or as some called him, “Big E or L Train,” worked for Donaldson Co. for many years.

He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with his family and friends. Elliott had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor and he will be dearly missed.

ART HUNN NORTH MANCHESTER, Indiana – George Arthur Hunn Jr., known as “Art,” was born on April 22, 1932 in North Manchester, Indiana to George and Dorothy (Metzger) Hunn.

Art was the second of five children, and was preceded in death by both brothers and one sister. His remaining sister, Miriam Adams, resides in Florida.

At Jefferson High School, near Dayton, Ohio, Art participated in FFA, drama, basketball, choir and band (playing trombone), and graduated in 1950. He studied at Manchester College from 1950 to 1954, graduating with a BA in speech and drama. He earned his Master’s of Divinity at Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1957.

In 1950, during freshman orientation at Manchester College, Art met Phyllis Heeter. With both last names starting with “H,” the were assigned seats beside each other at chapel services.

They got much better acquainted throughout their college years, and were married at the Elkhart Church of the Brethren on Dec. 19, 1953.

Art and Phyllis’s children are Becky (Dennis) Unger, Jeff (Jane Cross) Hunn, and Julie (Bill) Baxter, all of North Man-

chester. They also have four grandchildren, Matt (Lindsey) Unger, Amy (Kyle Leffel) Unger, Lauren Baxter, and Megan Baxter; and five great-grandchildren, Ayla and Lennon Leffel, Lilly and Grayson Unger, and Holden Wigglesworth.

Art served as a Church of the Brethren pastor in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, Aurora, and Polo.

In 2000, after 44 years of pastoring, Art and Phyllis retired and moved back to North Manchester. There, they became members of the Manchester Church of the Brethren, active in music and other activities. They moved to Timbercrest Retirement Community in 2012.

Art loved to travel with Phyllis and his family. They attended many Church of the Brethren annual conferences, and visited the Holy Land and Europe together.

Art and Phyllis were trained as disaster child care volunteers, serving in New Orleans and other locations. Art also participated in mission trips to Nicaragua and Honduras.

Art had a passion for being active through walking, bicycling, tennis and pickle ball. He was also an avid reader, chess player, chapel speaker and choir member.

Art cared deeply for others, getting to know them and sharing a laugh. He modeled gratitude to God and finding joy in each day. He persisted through sicknesses and in spite of his deep grief at losing Phyllis on Oct. 8, 2015. He died Feb. 28, 2021.

Always looking to serve, he requested that his body be donated to Indiana University Medical Center.

Art will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The memorial service was held Sunday, March 21, and is available for viewing at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=VsNogv9M_2Y&t=2567s.

Kyle Kanuch, 27, of Kirkland was arrested at 11:41 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 19,000 block of East Illinois 72 in rural Fairdale. Kanuch was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no registration light. Kanuch was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Tanya Thomas, 52, of Columbus, Ohio was arrested for two counts of forgery, one count of possession of stolen property and one count of identity theft after deputies were called at 1:21 p.m. to the Stillman Bank in Oregon for a report of a female cashing a forged check using stolen identification.

At about 1:33 p.m. Byron Police responded to the Stillman Bank in Byron for a report of a female cashing a forged check using the same checking account and identification as the call at the Stillman Bank in Oregon.

After a joint investigation with Byron Police, Thomas was located. During the investigation it was learned that the car burglaries that occurred in Davis Junction over the weekend of March 11 were connected.

No arrests were made in those cases at this time as the investigation is pending.

Pacheco-Vazquez also received a citation for speeding. Pacheco-Vazquez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Stephen Dexter, 26, of Dixon was arrested at 12:30 p.m. for driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), unlawful container/driver and possession of drug equipment after deputies received a call of a reckless driver west bound on Pines Road from Lowell Park Road. Deputies located and stopped the offending vehicle and driver at Pines and Devils Backbone roads.

Dexter was also cited for improper lane use and no seat belt. Dexter was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Deputies were assisted on scene by the Oregon Police.

At approximately 5:57 p.m. deputies responded to the 7,500 block of North Mt. Vernon Road in rural Forreston in regards to an ATV accident. An inves-

Albrecht and a passenger in the ATV, Bianca Ruchti, 20, of Oregon, were transported to Freeport Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Albrecht was cited for operating an ATV on the roadway. March 21 At approximately 6:15 p.m. deputies along with Rochelle and Hillcrest EMS responded to the intersection of Illinois 251 and Hillcrest avenue for a car versus bicyclist.

After conducting an investigation it was learned Timothy Huber, 26, of Rochelle, was riding southbound on Illinois 251 approaching Hillcrest Avenue when a Honda Civic traveling northbound driven by Saul Alanis, 58, of Rochelle, turned onto Hillcrest Avenue in front of Huber causing Huber’s bicycle to strike the passenger side of Honda.

Alanis was issued a citation for failure to yield when turning left. Huber was treated for minor injuries and released on scene.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE Multiple charges after man clocked at 100 mph A Rochelle man is facing multiple charges following a March 21 traffic stop.

At approximately 1:20 a.m., an Illinois

State Police Trooper stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Creston Road and Mulford Road for speeding in Rochelle.

During the traffic stop investigation, the driver, Gabriel M. Ujcic, 20, of Rochelle, was charged with speeding

(100 mph in 55 mph zone), improper lane usage, zero tolerance, illegal transportation of alcohol by driver, unlawful consumption of liquor by a minor, and unlawful possession of liquor by a minor.
