Beth Hower Amsrud led band to titles

Editor’s Note: In conjunction with March being Women’s History Month, Kathy Pasch has written a series of articles on women in history from Forreston.

This is her second submission.

BY KATHY PASCH “She was quite the showman” is how a former Forreston student described Beth Hower Amsrud. “She drove a nice car and was always accompanied by her pet chow Tip”.

Beth Hower was born and raised in Lanark. After receiving her Masters Degree, she began her career in 1929 by splitting her time teaching band at a number of Northern Illinois schools which included Chadwick, Thomson, Cordova, Elizabeth, Orangeville, Mt. Morris, Byron, Leaf River, Oregon and Forreston.

All that traveling between schools gave her national recognition with her photo appearing in a 1937 magazine ad for Plymouth automobiles with the caption: “An Iowa cloudburst forced Miss Beth Hower to drive her Plymouth through water that flowed over the floor-boards!”

In 1933/34 she organized the band in Forreston and won first place in the 100 students or less category at Champaign.

The Forreston band went to state four consecutive years in that category receiving first for three of those years. This includes 1937 when 14 of 56 members were out with measles and colds, but luckily the absences were evenly distributed so no sections were annihilated.

In 1938 Beth was director at five different schools and brought all five to a competition in Rock Island. She always wore a suit coat and skirt.

When marching in parades, their lines must be straight, the corner turns must be perfect, and her dog “Tip” always led the way.

During the summer, the band played concerts Wednesday evenings from a hay rack parked downtown. They performed at the Trask Bridge picnic, numerous fairs including the Ogle County Fair, along with the Chicagoland Music Festival at Soldier Field.

In June 1941 Beth married Morrie Amsrud. In 1951 she was teaching band and music full time at Forreston.

Ethel (Drake) Osterloo recalls: “She wanted her band to look as sharp as they sounded but she always made it fun. In those days kids didn’t get too far from home and she took us to Riverview Amusement Park in the suburbs which seemed so far away. One summer the band went to the Illinois State Fair where we slept in tents. It poured that night and the tents leaked. What a time the bus had to get up that hill to pick us up.”

“Her strength of character has made her a great teacher. She was firm and exacting, yet kind-hearted, generous and patiently helpful. During the past 30 years

approximately 2,000 students have been in her bands.”

Beth died May 16, 1997 survived by her sister, a niece and four foster children.

Her legacy lives on as a scholarship given each year in her name to a Forreston graduate.

Brandon Cuddy was missing since Dec. 26

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The family of a missing Byron man received confirmation Tuesday that the body found in the Rock River near Sterling on Saturday near the Oppold Marina was 27-yearold Brandon Cuddy.

Billy Cuddy, Brandon’s brother, said Lee County authorities confirmed the identity Tuesday after an autopsy.

Cuddy was found around 4:30 p.m. Saturday after a fisherman noticed his body, Brandon Cuddy said.

Cuddy Cuddy went missing the night of Dec. 26.

His car was found damaged on a steep bank of the river in the 9,000 block of Illinois 2 in rural Byron covered in snow on Jan. 6. Searches of the area had been done since by the family and search groups.

“We got in the car and got there and started asking questions,” Billy

Cuddy said. “One officer described the clothing and it matched my brother. 15 minutes later [Ogle County Sheriff] Brian VanVickle

called us and gave us the same information.”

Cuddy said he was told there “weren’t any surprises” with the autopsy and that the crash scene and an injury to his brother’s head pointed to him being ejected from the car into the river due to the crash.

The stretch of river from the crash to where Cuddy was found spans about 40 miles. Ice covered portions of the river in January and February and there are two dams between Byron and Sterling, one in Oregon and one in Dixon.

Billy Cuddy thanked search and rescue groups, volunteers and law enforcement for their efforts over the past few months.

“We really came together as a family and community,” Cuddy said.

“We’re thankful. The search groups were awesome. Wings of Hope, Christian Aid Ministries and the groups the Sheriff had in.”

Much of the searching was done by close family members, even when conditions were too dangerous for search groups to be brought in.

Donations were given for the family to buy search equipment like a boat and sonar.

“We’re happy we found him, but we’re sad about the circumstances,” Cuddy said.

Donations pay for funeral of 7-year-old Oregon boy

Oregon Chief: No update on homicide investigation

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Donations raised for a 7-year-old Oregon boy who died in his home last month have helped pay for his funeral and will be put towards additional ways to remember him, according to a family member’s Facebook page.

The family of Nathaniel Burton has checked into a possible memorial on school grounds which could include a bench, tree or a plaque.

Any additional memorial would be paid for by donations. Those that have donated money will be receiv-

ing bracelets in honor of Burton.

On Feb. 17, Burton, son of Bryan E. and Sarah L. (Safranek) Burton, was pronounced deceased after Oregon Police responded to a 2:35 a.m.

911 call for a seven-year-old who was not breathing at 403 South 10th Street.

After CPR attempts, Burton was transported to KSB Hospital in Dixon where he was later pronounced deceased. His death is being investigated as a homicide.

Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said Tuesday there is no update on Burton’s case and a final autopsy report has yet to come back. Melville said additional information could be released this week.

“No new developments as far as our investigation,” Melville said.

“We’re following up on every lead.

Every possible piece of evidence and we’re working on electronic resources.”

Oregon is the lead agency on the investigation and has been working with the Lee County Coroner’s office and Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock.

“We meet with them pretty much every day. The sheriff’s detective division has done a couple follow ups with peripheral parts of the investigation,” Melville said Feb. 25.

Melville said his department has spoken to the Department of Children and Family Services about the case and DCFS is aware of the investigation. He declined to say what those conversations consisted of.

Police have had experiences in the past responding to calls at the home where Burton was found deceased.

“We’ve had experiences in the past with the family,” Melville said.

“Numerous calls to the residence.

I don’t want to say what they’re in reference to because a lot of it is juvenile and medical information.”

Nathaniel Burton was a first grade student at Oregon Elementary School.

‘Several’ cases in fully-vaccinated individuals Three recent county outbreaks raise Ogle County numbers

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com During his monthly presentation to the Ogle County Board on Tuesday, Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman said he’s seen “several” cases of fully-vaccinated individuals testing positive for COVID-19.

Auman referred to the cases as “breakthroughs” and the Center for Disease Control has gotten involved.

“We have six sent on for additional testing and those will be sent to the CDC,” Auman said. “There’s a

couple more too. They’re still called potential breakthrough cases. It’s still concerning.”

Auman said several of the breakthrough cases are related to and initiated one of three outbreaks the county has been dealing with recently. Regional case positivity is at 2.8 percent and Ogle County is at 4.7 percent. Auman attributed that uptick to the outbreaks.

One outbreak was related to athletics at a school, another was at a nursing home and the third was at a local business. Auman did not specify which outbreak saw the breakthrough cases.

“We’re contact tracing and did testing at the school to ensure all students tested before playing and school,” Auman said. “We did find additional cases.”

The health department has reported 5,184 cases in the county with 77

deaths since the start of the pandemic. 15,286 vaccine doses have been administered with 6,061 people fully-vaccinated, 11.9 percent of the population.

Auman said allocations have improved and the OCHD is looking to expand to additional vaccine partnerships along with Rochelle Community Hospital and KSB Hospital.

“We got 1,400 doses last week and 1,200 this week,” Auman said. “Next week is slated to be 1,200. We’re making it through. We expect to get

the Johnson & Johnson vaccine by the end of the month. We plan to bring on partners and local pharmacies to administer.”

Larger pharmacies like Walgreen’s have started to get and administer vaccines, Auman said.

All schools have done both legs of their vaccines.

“We’re also working on large manufacturers, those and schools post the most risk,” Auman said.

Auman said he’s unsure when the county will start vaccinating adults under 65, which would be part of phase 1C. “That will come from the governor and the CDC,” Auman said.

“Ogle County is getting close. We have a couple thousand still left to do over 65. We’ve made significant headway.”

COVID-19 positives being investigated at Polo bar

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department said in a news release Wednesday that it’s been investigating “several” COVID-19 positive cases with potential links to Chesty P’s Pub in Polo.

“The potential exposure occurred at an event on Feb. 27,” the release said. “If you visited this establishment on Feb. 27 or the days fol-

lowing the event, please consider getting tested for COVID, especially if you are experiencing any of the COVID-19 symptoms.”

Symptoms include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting and diarrhea.

The OCHD continues to contact trace cases and close contacts relat-

ed to the event and said it’s asking for the public’s help to pass information about potential exposure to anyone who may have visited Chesty P’s Pub on Feb. 27.

Chesty P’s Pub is located at 104 E. Mason St. in Polo.

Amendment for area townhomes is approved

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Board unanimously approved an amendment to its Lee-Ogle Enterprise Zone ordinance to make way for housing developments in Oregon and Dixon.

The amendment has been approved by other area municipalities in recent weeks and would expand zone boundaries to include larger-scale housing project areas.

The development would include 48 units in 24 townhomes in what used to be Carnation Park in Oregon.

The developer is Ted Hvarre of Hvarre Development, which operates in the Sauk Valley.

The Oregon Development 9.48 acres. Dixon’s first is 16 single-family homes on 4.8 acres a block from the Rock River. The third is in south Dixon on 13.26 acres with a large amount of trails for a 70 rental unit community.

The duration of the project will be about three years. Historically, the enterprise zone hasn’t been used for housing projects and has been aimed at job creation and industry.

Members of the enterprise zone are

recommending the project move forward.

Hvarre will be using the enterprise zone to relieve him of paying sales tax on building materials.

Lee Ogle Enterprise Zone Administrator Andy Shaw said the areas will be put back in their previous position on the map when the project is concluded.

Grant Specialist Created The board voted to create the position of grant specialist for Donna Mann by a vote of 22-0 with one abstention.

Mann will work to locate and acquire grants to pay for possible projects like the demolition of the old Ogle County Jail. It was not specified at the meeting or in the packet how much Mann will be paid.

“Other counties have grant specialists,” Board Chairman John Finfrock said. “Donna Mann is already working on it. It’s great for the county. It will help with budget problems. Right now she’s working with the vice chairman. At some point it would likely go into long range planning. We’re looking at different projects like the jail.”

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Forrestville Valley School District released a press release this week thanking the Ogle and Stephenson County Health Departments.

“With their guidance and direction, Forrestville Valley has been able to safely operate our schools throughout the 2020-2021 school year,” the press release said.

The OCHD has visited the school district on two separate occasions to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to school staff.

A total of 81 immunizations were administered during immunization clinics held in January and February.

On March 13, the OCHD was on site at Forreston High School to provide free COVID-19 screenings. It was determined to utilize this extra safety precaution prior to the first practice after several students returned from quarantine.

Forreston had to end its varsity boys’ basketball season early due to exposed athletes. It also cancelled its first football game of the season.

Kyle Auman, OCHD public administrator, and Forreston School Nurse Jennifer Nelson administered 21 COVID screenings to football players and coaches.

“I am grateful to Mr. Auman and the OCHD for assisting us in our return to play process,” Superintendent Sheri Smith said.

“Our goal was to ensure all student-athletes provided a negative result before we resumed our athletic activities. This is an extra step in our attempt to keep everyone as safe as possible.”

I

n 2013 I wrote an article about William Hamilton. In 1833 William, the son of Alexander Hamilton, was in the Oregon area when Phelps arrived here looking for a suitable place to settle and find a suitable route from Galena to Chicago.

Hamilton, the first recorded white man in this are, was surveying the Rock River Valley into townships. Hamilton recommended the site Phelps claimed for his farm located near where Mt. Morris is located today.

So Hamilton was partly responsible for Phelps choosing this location for (Oregon City) founded in 1836.

William’s father, Alexander Hamilton, photo is on the face of the United States of America’s $10.00 bill. He was the first treasurer of the U. S. On the reverse side is a sketch of the U.S. Treasury. I mention this because his son William was surveying this area 187 years ago, 15 years after Illinois was founded.

So every time I see Alexander Hamilton’s face on a $10 dollar bill I am reminded of his son surveying this area in 1833 the same time John Phelps arrived here for the first time.

Alexander Hamilton was born in the West Indies 21 years before the Declaration of Independence.

In 1772 he arrived in Boston, Massachusetts.

During the Revolutionary War he served as Washington’s Chief of Staff.

In 1799 he was appointed Senior Officer of the Army serving five years. He married Elizabeth Schuyler on Dec. 14, 1780 four years after the Declaration of Independence.

President Washington appointed Hamilton the first United States Secretary of the Treasury on

September 11, 1789.

The Burr-Hamilton duel is one of the most famous personal conflicts in American history.

The duel was fought with pistols at Weehawken, New Jersey, between Vice President Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury.

This same site was used for 18 known duels between 1700 and 1845, including the 1801 duel that killed Hamilton’s eldest son Philip Hamilton.

Surveyor William Hamilton was born in New York and died in California.

He moved to Illinois one year before we became a state.

In 1822 he accepted an appointment as a U.S. Surveyor with the headquarters in Springfield, Illinois. He surveyed the city of Peoria naming several streets for Revolutionary War heroes including “Hamilton Street”.

In 1824 he moved to Galena and staked out a claim 50 miles east of Galena called Hamilton’s Diggings. Later, he traveled to California, for the Gold Rush. He died a year later in 1850 of Cholera.

First he was buried in a long trench with other cholera victims under a piece of wood labeled number 50. Ten years later the city of Sacramento created a new cemetery section and named it “Hamilton Square”.

His relatives erected the present monument with a bronze relief of his father.

So when you view the sketch of Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill remember his son William made the original survey of the Rock River Valley and his brother and father lost their lives in duels at the same location in New Jersey.

Wayne Suter and RuDella Benson were married March 9,1956 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

They are the parents of Wenda (Dana) Camacho of Rochelle and Randy Suter of

Oregon; their grandchildren are Randi, Cody, and Tori; and great-grandchildren, Sofie, KJ, Coda, and Jada.

Frozen family meals made for fundraising efforts

Ogle-Carroll Ag in the Classroom is offering frozen family meals as a fundraiser for the program.

Included in the package are 10 meals that have been prepared and frozen.

Each meal serves three to five people, meals include hickory smoked pulled pork, beef taco bake, BBQ meatballs, breakfast burritos, pulled pork mac and cheese, chicken bacon ranch mac and

cheese, french toast bake, chicken fajitas, Hawaiian chicken, ham with potatoes and green beans.

The cost for the 10 meals is $165.

Proceeds benefit the Ogle-Carroll Ag in the Classroom program.

Pantries in Oregon, Mt. Morris benefit

ehinton@shawmedia.com The shelves at two local food pantries are fuller thanks to scouts from Oregon and Mt. Morris.

Scouts from Oregon/Mt. Morris Pack 81 and Troop 52 held their 10th annual food drive on March 13.

“These scouts went around their communities placing door hangers in early March that the pickup would be on March 13,” said Katie Lehrke, scout leader. “This is a way that the scouts learn about giving back to their community and how they can help others with a simple donation.”

The donated food items were picked up by the scouts, sorted to remove expired items and then given the Loaves & Fish Food Pantry in Mt. Morris and the Lifeline Food Pantry in Oregon.

“It takes a lot of help to get those door hangers and then all the help to pick up the items that have been set out,” Lehrke said. “We would like to thank all of those individuals who put out door hangers, those that collected the food, and those who checked dates and inventoried what was collected, and most importantly, those who made the donations. Without your donation our collection would have been as successful as it was.”

Lehrke said Troop 81 and Troop 52 conduct two Scouting for Food drives each year with collections done in early December for Christmas and before Easter.

“Again, we want to thank everyone for their generosity,” she said.

The Making of the Bomb in Oak Ridge - Part 6

On Aug. 21, 2020 I wrote an article about the involvement of my aunt and uncle in the making of the atomic bomb at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I received several comments from others how they too had family members taking part in that Manhattan Project.

A number of weeks later my cousin sent me a picture of my aunt in the nursing home beside her bed that had a beautiful quilt on it. On the quilt was a book titled, “The Girls of Atomic City.”

While the snow and ice makes it treacherous for me to get out, I am going to give you numerous details of what it was like to be a part of that time in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The book answered many questions for me and you may be interested in what I found out as I read this book published in 2013 by Denise Kiernan. The storyline follows 16 women and 12 men who played a part in their lives. The author called them the “principal cast of characters.”

verything and nothing had changed... the author of the book wrote. Workers were told to continue work as usual but many found this difficult. Reactions to the dropping of the first bomb were different from workers in Oak Ridge to those on the outside world.

Jane’s father, living several miles away, was worried about his daughter working so close to anything with such power. Jane’s sister told her to inform her father about all the precautions she had been taking. Family members were now concerned.

When the second bomb was dropped on August 9th it brought an end to the war. While others were gathering in the streets to celebrate, one young woman went quietly up to her dorm room, sat on the edge of her bed, and simply cried. It was almost more than one could emotionally stand.

One father was concerned about the power the atomic bomb would have for the world and what this would mean for the future. We are still dealing with that power and our future in our world today.

From 1942 on, over a million women rolled up their sleeves and went to work in jobs they had never done before. They were in factories, offices, gathering up scrap metal, and saving grease in their homes.

At Oak Ridge no one told Helen and Dot what it meant as they turned the knobs this way and that way. No one told Katie who cleaned the plant what that area was doing. They all were simply doing as they were told. Now they were up in the air. Did they have a job or did they not have a job

Rosemary, who had been a nurse in a clinic, wondered what she would do. Should she go back to Chicago or go back to school? Then she was offered a job to stay on and work for different doctors in Oak Ridge and this she decided to do. She liked the area even though she had never seen the entire plant at Oak Ridge. She decided she would study and learn more about radiation.

Vi Warren, of the Oak Ridge Journal, had learned to accept the secrecy of her husband, Dr. Warren. She had given up being a part of his confidence and yet here she was a newspaper journalist. Suddenly they realized that biggest of all scoops had been “right under their noses and they were not permitted to know it, let alone report it.”

ered it. The headlines in the Oak Ridge Journal eventually said, “Oak Ridge attacks Japanese!”

Soon the public was clamoring for more news and this was difficult for a new newspaper that had known nothing! Suddenly newspapers across the United States were printing more about Oak Ridge than what Oak Ridge Journal had been able to print about themselves for many, many months.

Soon an abundance of reporters and news agencies flooded the town wanting stories of what had gone on in this remote little area. People were also packing up and leaving. But the signs on the bill boards were still saying, “Keep on The Job.” My aunt and uncle were also trying to figure it all out. Do we stay or do we leave? They eventually left and went to Cape Girardeau, Missouri where many in our family lived.

READING MATTERS

Talking, singing to kids help build vocabularies T

he words we know make up our vocabulary. We have listening, speaking, reading, and writing vocabularies.

For this month, and the next few columns, we will look at all of these vocabularies and examine how they relate to reading and writing. We will also consider the ways we can help our children and grandchildren build a rich vocabulary.

Our listening vocabularies are the first we build. With the exception of hearing impaired children, this vocabulary develops from birth.

A child’s listening vocabulary and the related oral language skills are a vital foundation for learning to read and write. There are many ways we can help build our children’s and grandchildren’s listening vocabulary.

One key way it is built is by having conversations with our children. As we play with babies doing things like tickling toes and tummies we say the name of each body part.

This eventually leads to even young babies learning to name and point to all different parts of the body. We can also just talk about daily activities of all kinds like cooking, doing the dish-

es, folding laundry.

We can talk to our children as we get groceries.

This may not seem important, but having everyday conversations definitely helps build language and listening vocabulary.

Singing and playing songs is another way to build this foundation. There is much research about the power of music in learning. Notice how most children’s television programs use songs to teach key concepts.

Thing about the alphabet song or other songs you’ve known since you were a child. Remember that our children and grandchildren are a forgiving audience so it does not matter if we are not great singers.

What matters is enthusiastically sharing the love of music and songs. All of those words in the songs are building listening vocabulary.

Reading aloud is one of the most important activities we can share with our children and grandchildren. The rich writing and vocabulary in quality children’s books builds and stretches their listening vocabularies.

The beautiful photographs and illustrations lead to meaningful conversations between the reader and the listener which are also vital for building rich vocabularies. Rereading favorite books builds in repetition and hearing familiar words and phrases over and over promotes deeper learning.

Our listening vocabulary remains one of the strongest throughout our lives, so it is definitely worth our time to support building it.

So enjoy having conversations with your children and grandchildren. Sing and play with them. Read aloud to them. You will be helping to build important oral language skills and a strong listening vocabulary, but more importantly you will be having fun!

Decision on state championships is good news Finally, something exciting in the world of high-school sports. The IHSA announced they will allow spring sports to conduct state championships.

That includes baseball, softball, girls (but not boys) soccer and track and field. Fortunately, cooler heads have prevailed in what had been a drawn-out affair by state politicians in limiting athletic competition.

It’s nice that basketball and football games were finally approved, albeit with a shortened schedule. However, the real fun begins when a state series is contested.

As someone who has attended the boys and girls state track meet off and on for 45 years, it will be like returning to long-lost friend in June at Charleston.

After having been a competitor there, a parent of a state qualifier, a reporter, a coach and an official, I dearly missed that experience in 2020.

It was time to renew friendships with people that you only see once a year. It was a time to see the best in athletic achievement and sportsmanship.

It was reminder in how big Illinois is, as you constantly heard school names over the PA from

every corner of the state. The boys meet remains the IHSA’s longest-running state competition, with the 127th version coming up this year.

Lately, I’ve been trying to learn more about the plight of Blacks. Did you know that in 1934, segregated schools in the southern part of the state were allowed to compete in a special district track meet (sectionals today) with the winners going on to state?

That segregated meet was discontinued 12 years later. What is refreshing about attending the state meet is the genuine interaction between students of all color.

When it comes to race relations, it gives hope for the future.

There will be an uncertainty to all spring sports. Losing a whole season will have a nega-

tive impact of the continuity of a program.

There will be some kids lost in the shutdown that teams will never get back. Having wrestling going on at the same time will also have an impact on participation.

To add to the confusion, fall sports are gearing up this week. By the time you read this, there will have already been boys soccer and girls volleyball games played.

State competitive cheerleading was held this past weekend, but it was a virtual platform.

Sounds strange, but it worked in finding champions in three enrollment classes and a coed event.

In this area, the best cheering leading is found in Boone county, with Belvidere North taking second in coed and North Boone sixth in the small-school division.

Former Hawk grad Grace Mongan went on to University of Illinois to cheer for them. With all the success the basketball team is having, the odds are decent for a national title.

Unfortunately for Grace and fellow cheer team members, they will be unable to root them on due to Covid limitations on who can or can’t be in an arena.

Whooping cranes stop at Grasslands

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com A group of federally-endangered Whooping Cranes made a stop at the Nachusa Grasslands last week on their way to Wisconsin.

“They need open prairie wetland habitats,” Nachusa Grasslands Deputy Director Cody Considine said. “They’ve been using it as a stop along the way. We’ve been seeing them in the fall and spring migrations. They’re still fairly uncommon. I believe there’s 600 of them left.”

Considine sees the cranes stopping as a report card on the environment they’re working to preserve.

“It assures us that it’s working,” Considine said. “It’s definitely good to see and we’re always happy to see them.”

Local Photographer Charles Larry, who has been shooting photos at the site since 1994, caught a glimpse of the rare birds.

“Three came in the fall,” Larry said.

“These are different ones. They’re heading north, back to near Baraboo, Wisconsin.”

March 9 Girls Basketball Byron 38, Dixon 33: The Dixon girls basketball team fell in the third-place game of the Big Northern Conference Tournament on Tuesday night in Rockford, dropping its season finale 38-33 to Byron at Lutheran High School.

Dixon (11-4) led 13-10 after one quarter and 20-16 at halftime, but saw the lead sliced to 27-26 after three quarters before the Tigers pulled out the win with a 12-6 scoring edge in the fourth.

Ava Kultgen led Byron with 13 points.

Amboy 66, Polo 27: The Clippers jumped out to a 28-3 lead after the opening quarter and never looked back in an NUIC East win at home.

Gabby Jones scored a game-high 18 points, and also had seven rebounds and four steals for Amboy.

Alex Dusing’s six points paced a balanced attack for Polo. Kaydence Sheaffer added five.

Traditional spring sports to have state finals IHSA says baseball, softball, track and more will play for championships

joestevenson@shawmedia.com Coaches and athletes in the IHSA traditional spring sports around Illinois are rejoicing after learning last week that state finals are planned for their sports in June.

The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the entire spring sports season in 2020, along with the boys basketball state tournaments.

The IHSA Board of Directors met Monday and approved a recommendation to set dates and parameters for badminton, baseball, softball, bass fishing, boys gymnastics, boys tennis, boys volleyball, girls soccer, journalism, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls track and field and boys and girls water polo.

Boys and girls lacrosse and boys volleyball cannot conduct state finals under current Illinois Department of Public Health mitigations.

Softball and baseball are among the traditional IHSA spring sports that will be allowed to compete for state titles as the COVID-19 pandemic improves. that mitigation changes will allow for it by that time.

The state series guidelines will be posted online and shared with coaches and personnel later this week.

The IHSA also released a statement that outdoor sports can increase their attendance over the limit of 50 from indoor sports.

Under the IDPH guidelines, schools within regions under Phase 4 mitigations are allowed up to 20% capacity for outdoor events.

The spring sports first affected by this will be football and boys soccer.

Girls volleyball, an inside sport that starts soon, still will be limited to 50.

“We have been adamant in our discussions with IDPH that we

believe we can safely and responsibly expand spectator guidelines without risking the general public to greater exposure to COVID-19,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said.

“This felt like a commonsense change, especially as we evaluated collegiate and pro sport spectator guidelines in the state, and are happy for the student-athletes who will be participating in IHSA outdoor sports this spring and summer, as well as for their families and friends.”

In the fall, the IHSA’s postseason series for sports considered low risk (boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis and girls swimming) ended with sectional competitions.

The last state finals in an IHSA sports were last year’s Classes 3A and 4A girls basketball tournaments in early March.

Now, with lower COVID-19 numbers around the state, the IHSA can have its state finals in sports that did not get any season at all a year ago.

The IHSA also will be posting a sport-by-sport mitigation guidance later in the week so those in spring sports (now considered the “summer season” in May and June by the IHSA) can better prepare for their seasons.

The Forreston Village Board voted down a contract for police services with the Forrestville Valley School District by a vote of 4-2 at its Monday meeting, Village President Mark Metzger said.

The contract included the services police have traditionally provided to schools over the years including security at sporting events, helping with crosswalks at the grade school and consultations as needed.

The fee for the services in the contract had increased for the first time since 2019 from $7,000 to $9,000. Metzger said the contract being voted down does not mean anything will change or that one won’t be approved in the future.

“It’s always been in place,” Metzger said. “It’s the first time the school has approached us about a contract.

We’ll still provide a presence. The school board wanted something on paper. It did not pass. Coverage won’t change. The previous contract is still in place. It’s been a handshake agreement in the past.”

Metzger said he was in favor of the contract due to Interim Police Chief Chris Thiel’s recommendation and the school’s value to the community. Metzger was unsure why board members voted against it.

“I can’t tell you exactly why they didn’t want to,” Metzger said. “My only guess is things in the past

with the school, they’ve asked for stuff and we have and things haven’t come to fruition. If it was a 3-3 tie I would’ve said yes.”

Village Clerk Michelle Drayton said trustees opposed the contract due to frustrations on issues with the school district in the past such as agreements on the baseball diamond at Warnken Park and planned crosswalks through a Illinois Department of Transportation program.

“A trustee opposed the district saying what we have to do when the school won’t sign other agreements,” Drayton said. “Another wanted to know if the fee covered officers working, and Chris said yes.”

Thiel declined to comment on the board’s decision, but said he plans to continue working with the school district.

“It’s still our responsibility,” Thiel said. “We’ll have to work on a different agreement. It may be more of a taxpayer burden now. We’ll keep doing the same things as before, just without getting paid for it. It will be business as usual.

Metzger said he expects to revisit the decision at future meetings.

“I’m sure it will be presented again with further discussion on why people feel a certain way,” Metzger said.

“The bottom line is we’re committed to helping them out. They’ll continue to have a presence and make sure everyone is safe.”

Reminder: No burning of waste in Ogle County State law says you can’t burn trash, plastic or garbage

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department reminds Ogle County residents that the open burning of most types of waste is illegal throughout Illinois.

The open burning of garbage, demolition debris, old buildings, furniture, mattresses, tires, plastic, and other forms of municipal waste continue to be problematic for residents and the OCSWMD each spring. Open burning of waste has

been prohibited since the 1970’s under the Illinois Environmental Protection Act and may be punishable through substantial fines.

Burning of solid waste leads to a variety of problems for area residents, including air pollution from the smoke created, toxic burn piles after the fire, and the real possibility of the fire spreading beyond control.

It can result in adverse impacts on your neighbors and your families’ health and safety, the local environment, and our local first responders.

While the burning of landscape waste may be legal in parts of the

county at certain times, the OCSWMD encourages other methods of management.Landscape waste, such as leaves, grass clippings, and branches and twigs can be either composted in a compost pile or mulched up and land applied onto your lawn.

In certain municipalities landscape waste is collected by waste haulers so it can be transported to a regional compost site to be recycled into fertile compost.

Residents who choose to burn landscape waste may only do so in unrestricted areas, with materials generated on the property. If you

live in or near a municipality, check with their local open burning ordinances prior to any open burning.

If you will be burning your landscape waste, the fire must not create nuisance air pollution for others, and may not obscure or interfere with modes of transportation, such as roads or rail lines.

Be sure the fire does not smolder and create excess smoke, and that the fire cannot spread uncontrolled.

The fire must be monitored at all times and a water source kept ready.

March 9 Kyle Mockovak, 21, of Mt. Morris was arrested at 11:41 p.m. for driving without a valid driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop at North Illinois 26 and Pitt Road for a lighting violation. Mockovak was released on an individual bond and given a further court date.

March 10 Nimrod Hilliard, 34, of Belvidere was arrested at 9:21 p.m. for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver and unlawful possession of drug equipment after deputies conducted a traffic stop at Steward Road and Illinois 251.

OBITUARY ROGER DALE GARRISON POLO — Roger Dale Garrison, 71, died on October 2, 2020, with his family by his side.

Roger was born to Esther and Clay Garrison on Feb. 16, 1949, and lived the majority of his life in Polo. He was married to Patricia “Pat” Lawson of Ashton on Oct. 10, 1981, in an outdoor ceremony at Camp Emmaus.

Together the couple raised three children, Jo (Larry “Ben”) Bittinger of Polo, Keith (Katie) Chesnut of Polo, and Molly Sides of Rockford. He was affectionately known as “Pa” by his six grandchildren, who were his absolute pride and joy.

For several years Roger raised hunting dogs, and owned and operated The Hunter’s Corner gun shop in Polo, and

March 13 Brandon Reints, 39, of Mt. Morris was arrested at 6:50 p.m. for possession of cannabis with intent

He worked for 19 years as a print press operator at Quebecor Printing in Mt. Morris. In retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Smokin’ Gun Worx in Forreston.

Throughout his life he frequented antique shows and flea markets as a vendor in the Northern Illinois area, and was widely respected as an expert in the field of antique traps, tools and firearms.

Over the last several years, Roger converted his expertise into educational outreach, dressing as a “Mountain Man” and teaching area youth about pioneer life and survival. He was a lifetime member both of the National Rifle Association and the Tri-County Gun Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Melvin. He is survived by his wife Pat, his three children, brother Bob (Rose) Garrison of Roseville, California, brother Bruce (Penelope)

March 14 Ryland Smith, 18, of Freeport was arrested at 3:33 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to the intersection of North Leaf River Road and Egan Road in reference to a possible property damage accident. Smith was also issued a citation for transportation of open alcohol. Smith was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.
