Bids presented for water main replacements North Walnut Street, South Oak Avenue pipes ‘old,’ ‘bad,’ ‘deteriorating’

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON — Bids for water main replacements on North Walnut Street and South Oak Avenue were shared with Forreston Village Board members on Monday.

Board members didn’t vote to accept a bid during the meeting, but are waiting for an official letter from the project engineer recommending they accept the low-bidder.

There were four bids, ranging from a low of $209,258.15 from Fischer, to a high of $302,312.50 from Northern Illinois Service, according to Superintendent of Public

Works Mark Rust. The project engineer’s cost estimate was $216,000.

“There’s quite a spread in numbers,” Rust said. “Part of that is the cost of supplies right now. Evidently Fischer must have some supplies on hand, where some of these other ones have to order it in and the price has increased quite a bit.”

The water main on North Walnut Street between East State and Avon streets and the one on South Oak Avenue between Illinois Route 72 and East Cherry Street are projects that should have been done years ago, Rust said after the meeting.

“Both of them, it seems like once a year they’ll get a break in them and we’ll have to dig them up,” he said.

About six weeks ago, there was a break on North Walnut Street and Illinois Route 72 — it was only a few feet from the previous repair they’d had to make, Rust said.

“The pipe is just bad and it’s deteriorat-

ing,” he said. “It’s just old, old pipe.”

North Walnut Street’s water main is 90to 100 years old and full of holes, while South Oak Avenue’s is a 1-inch, cheap plastic pipe installed in the 1970s that serves five commercial buildings, Rust explained.

Both will be replaced with 6-inch water mains during this project, he said. Additionally, the North Walnut Street water main — which is beneath the curb on the highway — will be moved back to the sidewalk.

Infrastructure needs to be maintained, but people don’t think about water mains because they’re underground and out of sight, Rust said.

“You’ve got an older truck or something, they see that and they think, ‘OK, we need a new truck,’ because they can see it,” he said. “But water pipe is underground and as long as they get water out of their faucet they don’t care what kind of shape it’s in.”

Health administrator gives county board an update on local efforts

azoellner@shawmedia.com ROCHELLE — Flu season is upon us, and the COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot now can be given at the same time.

“Previously, the influenza vaccine and the COVID vaccine had to be administered separately,” Ogle County Health Department Administrator Kyle Auman told the Ogle

County Board on Tuesday. “We currently can administer both of those vaccines together to avoid a second trip.”

Auman presented an update on the status of COVID-19 to board members Tuesday at their monthly meeting at Focus House in Rochelle.

“Hopefully this is one of the last times I have to come bearing bad news,” Auman said at the start of his presentation. “It’s not as bad as it has been in the past.”

Ogle County is averaging 20 new cases per day, he said. Region 1 — which includes the northwestern Illinois counties — continues to see high rates of transmission, while the rest of

the state is hitting a plateau, Auman said.

Ogle County had a 6.94% positivity rate as of Tuesday, with a case rate of 302.11 per 100,000 people, he said. The county’s vaccination Kyle Auman rate is 47.39%.

The regional intensive care unit bed utilization is at 16%, down from 17% a few weeks ago,” Auman said.

“So far in the month of September, we’ve seen two additional COVID

deaths — one in their 70s and one in their 80s,” he said.

All three vaccines — Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna — are available at Ogle County Health Department offices, Auman said. The department also is partnering with local hospitals and pharmacies to ensure vaccine availability, he said.

However, the health department is not currently authorized to administer a booster dose of the vaccine, nor can they vaccinate children under 11, he said.

“As soon as we receive that authorization from the state and our federal partners, we will make sure that we administer those,” Auman said.

Polo restaurant planning to close after 20 years Dad’s Bar & Grill/ Pinecricker Cafe’s last day is Sept. 30

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — The people of Polo have kept Kathy and Howard Wragg in business for the last year, but the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have backed the couple into a corner.

Their restaurant — Dad’s Bar & Grill/Pinecricker Cafe — will close at the end of September if a buyer isn’t found.

“It’s hard to put 20 years of your life into something and then walk away with nothing, but sometimes you have to know when it’s time to go,” Kathy Wragg said.

Wragg said the decision to close isn’t because of a lack of community support — that’s something they do have — but because the cost of doing business has soared.

Dad’s Bar & Grill and the Pinecricker Cafe are located on Mason Street in downtown Polo.

“It’s all but impossible to get the supplies we need,” she said. “When they do come in, they’re three times as expensive as they need to be. We’ve been left to not buy at all, or to buy something inferior.”

Dad’s Bar & Grill/Pinecricker Cafe specializes in “homemade, made-from-

scratch food,” Wragg said. The menu included prime rib, fried chicken, steaks, salads, wraps and more.

Paying staff enough to ensure things are done “the way we like things done” also is a cost they no longer can afford, Wragg said. Right now, they have five- or six employees, down

from a high of 20, she said.

Wragg said they’ve wanted to sell the restaurant for a couple years, so from that stance, they’re glad. However, she said, doing so during the pandemic has proven difficult.

It will be a loss to Polo if Dad’s Bar & Grill/ Pinecricker Cafe closes because there’s not many other dining options — especially ones that offer a steak and drink, she said.

“I hope somebody will realize what a gem it is there,” Wragg said. “We’ve had the best customers ever.”

The restaurant’s name came from Howard, who is originally from Pine Creek Township where residents who live in that area or were born there are called Pinecrickers.

The Wraggs are hosting a “Goodbye and Thank You” party at Dad’s Bar & Grill/Pinecricker Cafe on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited, and there will be free finger-food.

Final touches being made for 50th AOP festival Oregon event includes crafts, car and tractor show, Fun Zone for kids and a parade OREGON — The Autumn on Parade is busy putting the final touches on this year’s 50th festival, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday Oct. 2-3.

This popular festival is back in 2021 after last year’s event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020 would have been the 50th anniversary so, this year’s event, still organized and run by local volunteers, will celebrate that milestone with a new attraction — a beer garden with a live band.

The theme for the popular two-day event is “Rockin’ 50 Years”.

We hope people come out to mark this special event,” said AOP president Marseyne Snow. “We still need volunteers to help us during the weekend of the festival.”

Crafts and collectibles, a parade with marching bands and floats, strolling entertainers, and lots of good treats to eat are just some of the usual staples of this year’s festival.

The two-day event has evolved into one of the most popular and largest festivals in northwestern Illinois – and most of its attractions are free.

The heart of the festival is the Farmers Market and Craft Fair that features upward of 180 vendors who sell a variety of arts and crafts ranging from handmade wood items to homemade baked breads.

Booths are set up around the lawn of the historic Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets on both Saturday and Sunday.

Ornamental produce, locally produced honey, jewelry, soaps, candles, antiques, seasonal items, and homemade pies are just a few of the hundreds of items that can be found throughout the show.

Visitors to Autumn on Parade can also partake of a variety of scrumptious treats in the Food Court, where local not-for-profit organizations prepare their specialties each year.

Apple fritters, pork chop sandwiches, funnel cakes, bratwurst, kettle corn, and gyros are just some of the items offered.

The festival is one of the major fundraising events for most of the agencies and groups that are in the food court.

Beer Garden New this year, is AOP’s first beer garden in the history of the festival.

“Patrons of AOP have requested a beer garden in the past, so the AOP Committee decided to add this event to the 50 th Anniversary Celebration, “ said AOP Committee Member Dave Boehle.

The beer garden, sponsored by Martin & Compnay Excavating, will be located in the 100 block of S. Jefferson Street, between 3rd & 4th streets. This will be a one day event, Saturday Oct. 2.

You must be 21 to enter. A $5 cover charge will be collected, which will also include your first beverage.

Local band “Burn N’ Bush” will be performing from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. followed by another local favorite, “Blue Steel”, from 3-6 p.m.

Harvest Time Parade On Sunday, Autumn on Parade’s annual Harvest Time parade will march through the streets of Oregon. The annual event, which has about 125 entries each year, is known as one of the most entertaining parades in the region.

Entertainment this year includes The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Chicago Drill Team.

Marching bands, clowns, queens and local floats also participate in the parade. South Shore will also perform a post parade show following the parade.

Stronghold’s Olde English Faire will not be held this year.

“Coming into the summer, we had hopes of again hosting the Faire. Now coming out of summer and for a variety of reasons including the safety of our guests, performers, vendors and staff, the 2021 Olde English Faire is being postponed,” said Danny

Pierce, Stronghold director in an email. “The pandemic has been challenging on many levels and placed Stronghold in a delicate position. The loss of our largest fundraising event for the second year will place additional burdens on our financial landscape.”

Car Show Focus House, an Ogle County owned youth residential facility operated by the Ogle County Probation Department, will run the Autumn on Parade Car Show on Saturday at Oregon Park East.

Show times are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with awards scheduled for 2 p.m. Announcements & DJ will be by 3-D Sound Registration before Oct. 1 is $10 and $15 the day of the show.

A photo by Samantha Appel, a sophomore at Forreston High School, is one of the winners picked to be part of the state’s calendar.

Appel was notified Sept. 15 by Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs, that her photo will be included in the calendar.

Frerichs hosts the ‘Cream of the Crop Photo Contest’ each year, encouraging children from across Illinois to submit their most innovative, scenic snapshot that depicts their vision of agriculture.

Winning photos from the contest are featured in a calendar.

“With Samantha’s passion for agriculture and great art technique she enjoys taking pictures from around our beautiful area,” said Forreston teacher and FFA Adviser Kelley Parks. “Samantha takes advanced art as well as agriculture classes. The picture she submitted is from one of her family farms in German Valley.

She looks forward to continuing to show off our beautiful area to the state of Illinois!

OBITUARY DAVID LYNN VIETMEIER Born: August 4, 1943 Died: September 16, 2021

David Lynn Vietmeier, 78, of Forreston, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2021, at FHN Memorial Hospital, with family by his side.

David was born on August 4, 1943, in Freeport, the son of Lorence and Mildred (DeVries) Vietmeier.

He graduated from Forreston High School.

David married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Kilker, on August 18, 1962. David had a lifelong love of farming, he also worked at the Forreston Ready Mix for many years. He was known for his outgoing personality and his strong faith in his savior, Jesus Christ. He attended North Grove Evangelical Church in Forreston for many years. His life can best be described by Provers 20:7, which says, “The

just man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.”.

Surviving is his wife, Shirley Vietmeier of Forreston; three daughters, Stephanie (Ken) Schubert of Dakota, Jodi (Neal) Langill of Forreston, and Jacki (Kurt) Kaiser of Forreston; three brothers, Robert (Barbara) Vietmeier of Mt. Carroll, Gerald (Gwen) Vietmeier of Rockford, and Dennis (Barbara) Vietmeier of Pinegree, IL. David was blessed with eight grandchildren, (Jenna, Kyle, Lindy, Cassidy, Emily, Grace, Aaliyah, and Ella) and six great-grandchildren (Landon, William, Lincoln, Lilah, Miles, and another great-granddaughter due in December 2021). David was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be noon Friday, September 24, 2021, at North Grove Evangelical Church, Forreston. Pastor Tim Hotchkiss will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

A memorial has been established in David’s memory.

The Serenity Shed recently celebrated its 6th anniversary. The Shed opened in downtown Oregon as a bereavement center and volunteer workshop where anyone could come to create.

The items created are then sold at their retail center to help support Serenity Hospice.

The Shed has played a significant role in countless lives through the years including children and teens.

“When experiencing a death, people often tend to focus their attention on the adults grieving and try to distract kids from what they are feeling,” said Cathy Warren, bereavement coordinator and manager of The Shed. “But children and teens need to face their grief head-on just like adults.

They need support, encouragement and resources to help them deal with their emotions.”

Serenity has expanded their children’s resources to include day camps. The next day camp will be held at the Nash Recreation Center on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Eagle’s Nest Art Group to open its studio on Saturday, Oct. 2 Eagle’s Nest Art Group will open its studio at Conover Square Mall on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during Oregon’s Autumn on Parade festival.

LOCAL HISTORY

This is the third installment about the Kable Community Concert Band which was founded by the Kable brothers, who started Kable Printing in Mt. Morris. Band members also played at Camp Grant. which was located in Winnebago County.

T

he 129 th Infantry Regiment had been part of the 33rd Division. In March 1941 they were all sent to Tennessee for a year training session. Following Pearl Harbor the band members found themselves being sent all over.

Many of them were sent to the South Pacific. It was Lee Douglas who kept the band members together. He continued to be a leader although some were sent to England, Africa, and Germany.

A new experience for the group was finding mud on the floors of their new barracks at Camp Forrest, Tennessee but this paled in comparison to the fox holes with artillery shells flying over their heads.

Wherever they went they still managed to provide music in the way of concerts and serenades. They practiced in fields of dirt and clay.

The band also filled in for USO entertainers and they played for General McArthur’s visit. The men in other places managed to form little groups of musicians.

The natives in the South Pacific were amazed at their music as they played “Bolero” amid bunches of bananas. They had many musical experiences along with diving into fox

holes. Bill Maxey was an aid to a general in France and there was not much music going on for him.

He was just barely managing to stay alive during his experiences. He ended up writing a book, “Come With Me to a War”. The museum has copies of that book.

Several of the band members wrote books about their experiences. Frank Mathias wrote in his book, “G. I Jive” these words: “Boys growing up in the 1930s in mid-western ruritania knew nothing of the fast-life movies of today, nor of television”.

Most were very naïve but they fought with determination and hope.

They came out of the war with Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, and many other fine awards. Bill Maxey received the Croix de Guerre, a French military decoration.

They always managed to gather a little band together wherever they went or became part of other bands while in the service. It was interesting reading their histories written later. It was Dick Bentley who gathered all those histories together and put it into a booklet for a 50th year reunion.

When all the band members came out of the war, then they furthered their education on the G. I. Bill. Many

Most of them seemed to be a part of music wherever they settled weather they were teaching it or a part of a band.

They wrote letters back and forth and all those letters were in the box of history related material. Merlin Sager went back to Mt. Carroll and in one of his letters he wrote about the band he played in on Mayfest Days in Mt; Carroll.

I remember going to some of the Mayfest celebrations a few years ago and listening to the band.

They were Godparents for each other’s children and attended weddings of the children. They would travel across the country to be with each other as long as their health would permit it.

When Lee Douglas had his 100 th birthday in 1999, many attended his celebration if their health permitted.

They were a close knit group that always stayed in touch with each other. I will now put the box of material in a file at the museum and save the history of this musical group that evolved from the Kable Band of Mt. Morris.

Also just as the 129th Infantry Band stayed in touch with each other, the Kable Concert Band continued to keep going in Mt. Morris. In 1996 when the Kable Band had celebrated its 100 th birthday, Warren Reckmeyer was honored for having directed the band for 40 years.

The weekly summer concerts still entertain people and the musicians are all top notch. The town and area surrounding it continue to support this fine music.

Ground-level solar panels prohibited in Polo Troy Randall sworn in as new police chief

POLO — Polo City Council members on Monday voted to prohibit the instillation of ground-level solar panels pending further review of the matter by the Polo’s Zoning Board of Appeals.

“We’re approving solar panels on roofs for commercial and residential areas until the Zoning Board of Appeals looks at it,” Mayor Doug Knapp said after the meeting.

At the Sept. 7 council meeting, alderpersons directed city attorney M. Thomas Suits to prepare an ordinance putting certain regulations in place until Polo’s Zoning Board of Appeals can evaluate the matter and offer a recommendation. The regulations do not restrict rooftop solar panels.

The topic was broached because of

an inquiry the city received about installing ground-level solar panels.

In other business, the council: Approved Knapp’s appointment of Troy Randall as police chief. Randall then was sworn in.

Approved extending the life of Polo’s tax increment financing district an additional 12 years. The TIF district was created in 2008 and originally scheduled to end on Dec. 31, 2032. The change means the TIF district will terminate on Dec. 31, 2044.

Hot & dusty perfect for club’s hill climb

It was hot and dusty, but that didn’t phase the participants at the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club’s hill climb on Sunday.

Riders from across the region took their best shots at climbing “the hill” on their motorcycles in a variety of class divisions.

The club was founded in 1935 and was known for its hill climb event, held just to the west of what once was the Pines Drive-In Theater. When the theater closed, the club purchased the land it was on, and eventually added other events.

The event was the second hill climb held by the RRRMC this year at their grounds across from White Pines State Park, between Oregon and Polo.

The club’s popular Father’s Day Hill Clim was held in June.

Credit to the organization for being progressive and thinking outside of the box. Not only are they beginning a state competition for esports, but in conjunction with the Illinois Pork Producers, they are attempting to find the best pork chop sandwich in Illinois.

“High school sports in Illinois and pork chop sandwiches just go together,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said. “The bands, cheerleaders, fans and smell of concession grills are an integral part of the high school sports experience.”

Any school that is interested in the “Pork and Pigskins Championship”, can sign up with the Illinois Pork Producers.

“High school sports are a big part of the communities we live in,” Pork Producers President Alan Kollman.

“Many producers can be found helping prepare these gameday concessions or in the stands cheering. We wish all high schools luck as they compete to find the best gameday pork chop sandwich in Illinois.”

Additionally, I favor a less-salty wet marinade for seasoning, which also contributes to the juiciness factor.

But, to each their own and I will let the real pros, the Pork Producers, be the judge of which school has the best sandwich, which has to be an almost impossible task.

One thing is certain - food has an intoxicating element to it and credit to the IHSA and Pork folks for tag-teaming this endeavor.

Esports becomes the 10th activity the IHSA offers, joining bass fishing, chess, debate, drama, speech, journalism, music and scholastic bowl.

So many of these activities are done by kids that would not be in sports.

Credit to the IHSA for understanding that high schools are more than about athletics.

If you are an old-timer like me, there may be doubts as to why the IHSA would consider esports.

“Not unlike when the IHSA offered bass fishing, some may question how esports fits into the IHSA offerings, but we never waivered in our belief that we want to align the association with the best interests of our high school students,” Anderson said. “We look forward to students who are pas-

sionate about esports being able to enjoy those benefits.”

So, towards the end of April 2022, look for the esports competition with a yet unnamed state finals host venue.

Locally, we have a very limited participation in swimming and diving.

However, there is a decent amount of kids from larger schools that take part and the IHSA is excited to announce a new host for the state finals.

After 41 years of holding the event at either New Trier and Evanston high schools, the finals will be moving to the state-of-the-art FMC Natatorium, complete with an Olympic-size pool, warm-up and cool-down pools and video scoreboard with integrated timing system.

There will also be seating for 1,400, a huge improvement from high-school pool areas. For those that have tried to watch sports like bowling and swimming that don’t have much seating, you know what I mean.

It truly is a top-notch venue and one that will be used be people from all over the Midwest. It also is a part of a growing trend of bigger and better athletics venues everywhere.

Giant pumpkins to make an appearance at AOP Stillman Valley couple finds success with Atlantic Giants

Well, start with some really, really nice neighbors, plant some really, really good Atlantic Giant seeds, add lots and lots of water, fertilizer, and sun… and oh yeah, be ready to dole out tons and tons of pampering every day.

That was the recipe Theresa Miller and her husband Keith followed this year at their rural Stillman Valley home.

“I’ve grown pumpkins for 7 years, but this year I wanted to try growing giant pumpkins,” said Theresa. “They need a lot of sun and our property has a lot of shade but our neighbors, Joe and Sandy Yockey knew I grew pumpkins and they offered a portion of their property and I said ‘yeah’.”

just at 760 pounds. With a couple of growing weeks ahead Theresa thought Big Mama could make 900 pounds before she and Twaddle Butt make their public debut at Oregon’s Autumn on Parade festival on Oct. 2-3.

The pumpkin pair will be located on

the corner of Fifth and Washington Streets during the 2-day festival.

The pressure will shift to Keith in a couple of weeks when he is tasked with moving the pumpkins to downtown Oregon.

While AOP visitors will see the end result of the Millers’ efforts, there is much more involved in the daily grind of growing.

“We planted the seeds on Mother’s Day. I got them from the Back Yard Giant Pumpkin Growers. Even the seeds are bigger,” Theresa said laughing. “I had 6 seeds and I got 5 pumpkins out of them.”

The Millers had the Yockey’s soil tested and found out it needed a lot of fertilizer to help with the growing process. “My husband has been so patient,” said Theresa. “We water them every other day. They can grow up to 25 pounds a day.”

“We water each plant for 30 minutes. There is only one pumpkin per plant,” said Keith.

The weight of the pumpkins is estimated by measuring the pumpkin and then using a formula to get the weight.

Continued from Page 10 During the summer, the pumpkins are covered with sheets to protect them from cracking in the sun. Theresa also made sure there was only one pumpkin per vine and kept a steady outlook for parasites that could have damaged the plants.

“I’m still picking off little ones that want to grow. The leaves are very

important and need to be healthy.

They kind of act like solar panels to feed the vine,” Theresa said.

The pumpkins have turned into a neighborhood affair with Sandy Yockey keeping an eye on the gentle giants as they bask in the sun in her backyard while other neighbors ask the Millers frequently about the pumpkins.

“The Yockeys were kind enough to give up their privacy for the pumpkin patch and now the whole neighbor-

hood has taken an interest,” Theresa said.

Yockey said she has enjoyed watching the pumpkins grow and will miss them when they are moved.

“I have loved it,” she said. “Theresa and Keith are great and we just laugh when we see her out here everyday.”

“Sandy has actually texted me when one of the pumpkins lost its cover,” said Theresa.

“I have kinda become attached to the pumpkins,” said Sandy. “It has

become a neighborhood community thing.”

In return for their use of their 900 square foot piece of land, the Millers have kept the Yockeys supplied with eggs from their chickens and beer.

“We make sure they have plenty of eggs and beer,” said Theresa smiling.

“I am just so happy they let me do this.

I just love showing my pumpkins. I was trying for a 500-800 pounder this year and I smashed that. My goal next year is 1,600 pounds.”

Sept. 16 Patrick M. Fisch, 27, of Walnut, was cited at 4:52 p.m. for the unlawful use of an electronic communication device while driving. Fisch was released on an I-Bond.

Sept. 13 At 9:01 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 500 block of Jefferson Street involving a 2002 Buick driven by Rita I. Francis-Mecum, 44, of Walnut, and a 2004 Ford driven by Mark A. Vice, Sr., 59, of Oregon. Francis-Mecum was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Diamond Alize CJ Wade, 19, of Rockford, was arrested at 10:35 p.m. for improper container of cannabis as a driver. Wade was transported to the Ogle County Jail. A female passenger, 16, also of Rockford, was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol as a passenger. These violations occurred in the 400 block of Jefferson Street.

Nimrod D. Hilliard, 35, of Rockford, was arrested at 10:44 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Hilliard was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 4th Street.

Sept. 15 Keegan S. Diehl, 17, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:33 p.m. for passing a school bus while loading and unloading. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 2nd Street.

At 6:08 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of S. 4th and Madison Streets involving a 2017 Cadillac driven by Diane L. Magne, 72, of Dixon, and a 2012 Chevrolet driven by Katelyn R. Bowers, 16, of Oregon. Magne was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Sept. 16 James R. Henderson, 21, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7:37 p.m. for operating a vehicle with an expired registration. This violation occurred in the 200 block of E. Washington Street.

Jerime J. Kuhlemier, 40, of Oregon, was

arrested at 9:21 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for aggravated battery and a sentencing order for domestic battery.

Kuhlemier was charged with reckless driving, felony driving while license revoked, and felony aggravated fleeing to elude.

Kuhlemier was also issued citations for speeding, 110 mph in a 55 mph zone, operating a motorcycle with an expired registration, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Kuhlemier was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of N. River Road.

Sept. 17 Breann R. Daugherty, 32, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:30 p.m. for possessing an improper container of cannabis as a driver.

Daugherty was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 700 block of E. Washington Street.

Sept. 18 Frances E. Witt, 23, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 6:11 p.m. for operating a vehicle with no valid registration. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

Sept. 15 Tyrell Taylor, 33, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:33 a.m. for no valid driver’s license, improper turning at an intersection, speeding 75 mph in a 55 mph-zone and no insurance after being stopped in the 6000 block of Illinois Route 72.

Adam Swanson, 50, of Byron, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol by Ogle County deputies following a traffic stop at approximately 9:18 p.m. near the intersection of Blackhawk Road and Illinois Route 64. Swanson also was cited for improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Cheyenne N. Duchay, 18, of Rock Falls, was issued citations at 1 p.m. for speeding, 59 mph in a 35 mph zone and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

Dragan Zlatic, 54, of Rochelle, was issued a citation at 1:27 p.m. for speeding, 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Sept. 14 Azaleia Ellis, 19, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license at 2:16 a.m. following a traffic stop on Illinois Route 251 at Illinois Route 72. Ellis also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no registration light. Ellis was released from the scene on a $2,500 I-Bond.

Luna Barrett, 20, of Princeton, was arrested for driving while license suspended at approximately 10:40 p.m. at Interstate 39, mile marker 97. Barrett also was issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and an equipment violation. Barrett received an I-Bond and a return court date next month.

Sept. 17 Douglas Vargas, 28, of Tampa, Florida, was arrested at 10:11 p.m. for driving while license suspended after being stopped in the 5000 block of Illinois Route 72 for speeding, 21-25 mph over the speed limit. Vargas received an I-Bond with a return court date next month. He was also cited for speeding.

Sept. 18 At about 3:40 p.m., deputies were advised of a possible reckless driver on Illinois Route 2, north of Grand Detour. Deputies located

Sept. 19 At 5:01 a.m., deputies were dispatched to 9163 S. Grist Mill Road in reference to a single-vehicle crash. After an investigation, deputies learned that Cherly Chojnacki, 50, of Mt. Morris, failed to negotiate a curve and drove her 2004 Honda into the westbound ditch, striking a tree head-on. Chojnacki was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor injuries suffered in the crash.

Deputies were assisted on the scene by the Rochelle Fire Department, Flagg Center Fire Department and Oregon Fire Protection District.

Football Stillman beats Dixon: Stillman Valley’s rushing attack put together just enough quality drives to build a lead, then had just enough to get the final few first downs to run out the clock in a 20-14 win over Dixon.

The Dukes (3-1) scored with 3:24 left in the game to get the deficit down to six points, but on the ensuing drive, the Cardinals converted a third-and-short and were able to kneel down from there.

Stillman Valley running back Jory Spain had 33 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Spain carried 21 times for 87 yards in the first half alone, accounting for 21 of his teams 32 first-half offensive plays and all but 17 of the Cardinals’ first-half yards. He then capped off his team’s scoring with a 5-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter and a 3-yard run with just over six minutes to play.
