azoellner@shawmedia.com BYRON — U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger urged Ogle County officials and community members to keep putting the pressure on their state and federal leaders to keep the Byron nuclear power station open.

Kinzinger met with Byron community leaders on Sept. 1 to discuss the future of the nuclear power plant. The roundtable was closed to the press.

“They [local leaders] recognize, understand and feel the fear of their community,” Kinzinger said after the event. “They feel the same frustration everybody does, which is, ‘We can speak louder, but are people listening?’”

“I think that’s where we have to look at Springfield and look at what goes on in [Washington,] D.C., and see what that outcome is to answer that question,” he said. “There’s a lot of obvious real concern among community leaders to get an answer to this.”

Continued from Page 3 and Dresden nuclear plants, announced last year that it intends to retire Byron’s plant this month. Dresden, which is in Morris, is slated to close in November. The Byron plant is licensed to operate for another 20 years, Dresden for another 10.

The whole area has “certainly outpunched its weight class” in making their feelings known about this situation, Kinzinger said. They should continue to keep the pressure on the people making this decision, which are those in Springfield, he said.

Be optimistic, but realistic and recognizing that this might not be resolved until the very last minute, Kinzinger said.

“The sad thing about it is, nuclear feels like a hostage because everybody’s in agreement that nuclear should stay open,” he said. “It’s these other issues and dates and timelines that are being held which is holding nuclear hostage.”

Both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are failing the American people by holding onto their leverage and stoking outrages against each other, Kinzinger said.

“We’re not solving real problems,” he said. “The nuclear issue is something that we all agree on that we can solve — but everybody’s hanging onto

Kinzinger said he’s working to get a bill passed that, should the Byron plant close, will allow some of the licensing fees to go back to companies, giving them a better bottom line.

The bill also would take some of the decommissioning funds and U.S. Department of Energy money and invest it in impacted communities to help them through that process, he said.

“Yeah, I’m optimistic we can get that done eventually,” he said. “But I don’t want to pretend like that’s going to somehow paper over the real devastation that would happen.”

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois House was scheduled to return to Springfield Thursday, Sept. 9, to try again at passing an elusive energy regulation overhaul days after the governor’s office announced support for a new proposal.

It’s the latest push for a legislative accomplishment that has eluded Gov. JB Pritzker in his three years in office, and it’s up against a Monday deadline set by nuclear energy generator Exelon.

The company has announced that after that date its Byron Generating Station near Rockford would not refuel without legislative action assuring its profitability. It set a similar deadline for its Dresden Generating Station in Grundy County for November.

Negotiators have agreed to a nearly

$700 million subsidy for Exelon over the next five years to keep its plants online and profitable, a position backed strongly by labor unions representing nuclear workers and accepted by environmental groups because of the importance of nuclear energy as a carbon-free power source.

But a disagreement between labor unions and environmental groups on another matter – what to do with municipal coal-fired power plants – has largely held up talks thus far.

The disagreement largely boils down to one sentence in two differing legislative proposals moving through the General Assembly. Despite that fact, lawmakers were unable to bridge the gap between the two sides at the end of the regular May legislative session or when lawmakers returned in

I

n the history of Mt. Morris there is one family that stands out above all others and that is the Kable Family.

In 1882 the Kable family moved to Mt. Morris from Lanark according to “Mount Morris: Past and Present.” I also read somewhere it was Chadwick so perhaps it was somewhere in the country in Carroll County.

When the family moved to Mt. Morris, the father was involved in the making of carpet. Harry and Harvey were in grade school. Twins, Harvey and Harry Kable graduated from high school in Mt. Morris in 1896.

In 1896 Harry Kable went to work for Charles Canode at the Mt. Morris News. In 1897 the print shop needed a new leader when Charles Coggins left the shop. At this point Harry convinced his twin brother, Harvey, who had just finished two years at Mt. Morris College, to join him in the print shop. An older sister, Allie also went to work with them and she learned type setting.

This family endeavor was the beginning of Kable Brothers Print-

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf ing Company which employed over 800 workers by 1937. As printing seemed to grow, music also had grown in Mt. Morris during those early days. In 1845 they already had a brass band that kind of came and went.

It was the Kable Brothers who really loved the band and as the story goes, they hired people in their printing company who had musical ability.

In 1896, H. G. Kable organized the Mount Morris News Band and Charles Conode directed it. Harvey Kable played the sax and Harry played the baritone according to the history written by Lee Douglas, a member of the band.

Individuals were hired from all over the area to come play in the band and they would be taught the printing business according to the 100th Anniversary booklet of the Kable Concert Band. Concerts given

weekly during the summer have gone on since 1897.

The band seemed to be around 20 members for a number of years.

Then in 1923 L. M. De Arvil came to be the director and the Kable Brothers Band became part of the Regimental Band of the 129th Infantry, Illinois National Guard in the 33rd Division at Camp Grant in Rockford.

By 1926 the band had grown to be around 50 musicians. In 1928 Lee Douglas arrived to work at Kable Brothers Printing Company. His job also was to build up the band so he was always recruiting. Lee was an interesting person and lived to be over 100.

He came from Steeleville, Illinois and played numerous instruments: bass drum, clarinet, flute, piccolo, and alto sax. He was involved in “theatre orchestra, Chautauqua, and the Sells Floto Circus” according to a press release advertising his 100th birthday party.

He met Rita Taylor in Arkansas and married her in Mt. Morris on June 13, 1934.

When he interviewed for a job

with the circus before coming to Mt; Morris, they asked him if he played the piccolo. Of course he said, “Yes” even though he had never touched the instrument. He soon figured out how that instrument went in very little time.

The man obviously had tremendous musical ability. As a five year old child he became fascinated with the music at the St. Louis World’s Fair and he knew at that moment he would someday be part of a band.

He would run along the Mississippi River following the showboats listening to the Steam Calliopes and the rag time music.

When he died at 103 at Gateway Villa in Texas, he had been referred to as the “Pied Piper” because he was still playing his flute and luring people out of their rooms with the lilt of his musical notes.

Next time we will find out how the Polo young people became involved in this band and others from all over.

Bowman celebrates her 90th birthday

Open house for Ed and Karen Olsen is Sept. 12

Evelyn Jean Wales Bowman celebrated her 90th birthday at a party given by her son, Jeffrey Bowman of Fort Wayne, Indiana, at Pinecrest Village in Mount Morris on her birthday, Aug. 24.

Evelyn met Wilbur L. Bowman of New Paris, Indiana, at Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana.

They were married on Dec. 31, 1950, at the Polo Church of the Brethren.

Together they farmed northwest of Polo. Eventually they started Bowman’s Electric and Evelyn opened up The Stone House on the farm. It was a gift shop and lunch room for 17 years.

Together they have 5 children; Jeffrey Bowman, Greg (deceased) (Joann) Bowman, Rodney (Cathy) Bowman,

The Senate passed Senate Bill 18 last week after being the lead chamber in negotiations for several months, moving it to the House for further discussion. Its bill would have closed municipal coal-fired plants by 2045, but would not have set interim carbon reduction goals, meaning the plants could emit as much carbon as they currently do for the next 24 years.

Another iteration rejected by environmentalists would have allowed Prairie State Energy Campus in the Metro East near St. Louis to remain open past 2045 if it offset at least 105 percent of its current carbon emissions through sequestration or other offset measures.

On Friday, Gov. JB Pritzker’s office announced it “strongly supports” House Amendment 1 to Senate Bill 1751, an identical measure to the Senate’s, according to its sponsor, except for that it also requires a 45 percent carbon reduction for municipal coal plants by 2035.

“The amendment builds on the progress made in Senate Bill 18 by requiring a 100 percent reduction in carbon emissions for municipal coal by 2045 with the additional goal of reducing emissions by 45 percent by 2035,” Pritzker’s spokesperson Jordan Abudayyeh said in a statement Friday.

“We know our planet cannot afford to wait more than two decades before significant progress at reducing carbon emissions is made, and this bill is a reasonable path forward. The administration looks forward to continuing discussions with our partners in the

The labor contingent, which supports the coal plants due to the amount of union labor that runs the facilities and helps maintain them, is represented in the Climate Jobs Illinois coalition, which indicated in a weekend statement that further negotiation is needed “We are nearly there,” a spokesperson for Climate Jobs Illinois said in a statement over Labor Day weekend.

“A deal hinges on a singular albeit complicated issue. Labor has made significant compromises during this process, as have the other parties. We commit to continuing to work through the one remaining difference to reach an agreed bill.”

a longtime renewable energy advocate who was the sponsor of the Clean Energy Jobs Act that provides much of the framework for the negotiated bill.

It has the backing of leading environmental groups making up the Clean Jobs Coalition.

“I think the decarbonization piece, for many of us, many members of the General Assembly, is an important part of any clean energy package,” Williams said in a phone call Tuesday.

“For me, it’s not good enough to do yet another utility bill without addressing the elephant in the room, which is our looming and ever-increasing climate crisis.”

Senate President Don Harmon, after his chamber’s late-night passage of SB18, said it will be difficult to bridge the gap between the parties,

because any investment in carbon-capture technology to reduce emissions by 2035 would be cost prohibitive for Prairie State if it had to close 10 years later.

House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, meanwhile, has indicated he won’t call a bill in his chamber until there is wider agreement between stakeholders.

“I am pleased to see negotiations moving forward on a comprehensive energy proposal that prioritizes a greener future for Illinois, as well as meaningful ethics reform and maintaining our current workforce,” Welch said in a statement Tuesday announcing the upcoming session. “I am confident that we will have a plan that Illinois can be proud of and will be viewed as a model for many other states.”

Outside of the decarbonization language, the wide-ranging bill is largely agreed, with strengthened ethics language for utility companies, an increase on ratepayer bills to fund equity-driven clean energy workforce development programs, and a doubling of the ratepayer-funded investment in renewable energy infrastructure, among several other provisions.

Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, said during the Senate’s passage of SB18 it would increase residential ratepayer bills by 3-4 percent, commercial bills by more than 5 percent, and industrial bills by more than 7 percent.

The Oregon United Methodist Women will hold their annual White Elephant Sale during Autumn on Parade weekend, Oct. 1-3.

Savanna Museum’s Cruise-In set for Saturday, Sept. 11

Car enthusiasts are invited to Cruise-In during Savanna’s Shadfly Festival on Saturday, Sept. 11, for the Savanna Historical Society’s car cruise.

Vehicles will be displayed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Madison Street (off Main Street).

There is no registration fee for participation in the event. Savanna Museum and Cultural Center volunteers will register and

line up the cars.

Owners who would like their vehicles to be in the parade honoring firemen, first responders and veterans should meet in the old Shopko parking lot behind Sullivan’s Foods and Dollar General at 10 a.m. The parade begins at 11 a.m.

Dogs and cats living in Ogle County can get microchipped for $20 during “Microchipping Day” on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Ogle County Health Department building, 907 Pines Road, in Oregon.

No appointment is necessary between 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The $20 cost for each chip includes registration with Home Again Pet Recovery Service.

Microchips are placed under the skin and can be scanned for information as to ownership if the pet is lost and ends up at a vet clinic or shelter. The clinic is for dogs and cats only and owners must be residents of Ogle County.

Dogs over 4 months of age must have a current rabies vaccination.

Sheriff’s department adds ‘special needs registry’

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office recently launched a voluntary “special needs registry” meant to assist emergency service personnel in offering aid in a crisis situation.

“It actually came about as a result of real-world incidents we had,” Ogle County Sheriff Brain VanVickle said.

“We had a couple of special needs kids that had left their house. We found that there was … an issue trying to reunite them with their families.”

Primarily, it will be 911 operators that have access to the registry, he said. Byron, Oregon, Rochelle and sheriff’s deputies also will have access to the information in their vehicles, VanVickle said.

VanVickle said that the program is separate from the Premise Alert Program’s special needs registry maintained by the Ogle County Emergency Management Agency, which is meant to be used before, during or after a countywide emergency or disaster.

That program has been around since 1984 and is in place because of the nuclear power plant near Byron, he said.

School Board is effectively lowering the total EAV. A further result of these two effects will be to shift the tax burden for the Oregon School District to those with a higher percentage the district’s total EAV, which means Oregon residents will pay higher taxes and Mt. Morris residents will pay less.

I doubt this was intended by the school board, and perhaps not even considered, but this is what happens when you “shift values” within a taxing district. (A la one property goes up in value relative to the total value in the taxing district and voila-their tax bill goes up, while others, whose value went down in relation to the total in the taxing district, see their tax bills fall.)

Thus, there are no winners in the decision to move the junior high students to Oregon.

Oregon residents will pay more tax, and Mt. Morris residents will lose EAV. Everyone loses.

This is the decision the school board adopted on Aug. 16, which I suggest be rescinded, as it “is an educational decision made within a bubble” with potentially catastrophic (and perhaps unintended) impact to the cities and residents of Oregon and Mt. Morris.

On the other hand, if the school board should choose to invest a few million dollars today into the city limits of Mt. Morris at DLR, leaving the education sharing division between Oregon and Mt. Morris in place, it will: • Cause no change to the EAVs of properties in Oregon. (Essentially no harm no foul.)

• Cause slight to modest increases in the EAVs of properties in Mt. Morris by keeping

the last remaining vestiges of an educational system within its city limits.

The result of this scenario is a net gain in the total EAV for the School District. This makes it a good civic investment!

A further result of this strategy will also be to shift the tax burden for the Oregon School District to those with a higher percentage of the District’s total EAV, which means Oregon residents would pay less tax than in the currently-adopted strategy, and Mt. Morris residents would pay more.

Everyone wins in this scenario. Oregon residents pay less tax. Mt. Morris residents get higher EAVs and keep a semblance of an educational system within their borders. This is why the decision on where to invest junior high dollars is best for all if that investment occurs in Mt. Morris at the current DLR Junior High.

Why not let everyone be a winner, rather than dividing the district into (tax) losers and (property value) losers?

To the Editor, When the recent high winds came through Mt. Morris a very large section of our walnut tree came down at 101 E. Center St. We were aware it had fallen, but did not have the large chain saw to cut it up right away.

Imagine our surprise when we received a phone call telling us they saw a man trespassing on our property and cutting it up and taking it for himself.

People drive past our property every day, it does not belong to the city and it is not a park; nor much to the rumor mill it is not being given to the fire department, Pinecrest or up for sale. It is ours to maintain and enjoy.

We are all trying to teach our children and others about respecting others and their property. Being honest in all that you do sets an example for all and allows us to continue the fine community of Mt. Morris.

Gee, wouldn’t it just be wonderful if the person would return our wood — or at least call and thank us for it. It is never too late to be honest and have integrity.

We will not make your name public; but maybe you will by going to the local police and explain why you were trespassing. So was it yours to take?

Letter to Oregon School Board An open letter to the Oregon Board of Education Members, To start, thank you all for your service.

Public service is difficult and vital! Thank you

for your sacrifices.

I am told the Oregon Board of Education has already voted on the future of the David L. Rahn Junior High as of Aug. 16. That said, no decision is ever final till it’s too late to change, and it is not yet too late to change this decision, should reason enough be discovered to change course.

Based on my experience as a former elected official (nowhere near Oregon or Mt. Morris), I would caution the Oregon School Board NOT to make an educational decision in a vacuum or bubble. It appears, though, that is exactly what has happened. Consider the following: If the school board invests a few million dollars today inside the Oregon city limits to accommodate the district’s junior high students, now being educated in Mt. Morris, and thus abandoning DLR, it will: • Cause little to no increase in the EAVs of the properties in Oregon.

• Cause a severe decrease in the EAVs of properties in Mt. Morris, undoubtedly by more than the combined Oregon property owners will increase, if they increase at all, which is unlikely. (Abandoned schools quickly become blight, as they are not usually well maintained, becoming a host for vandalism, causing a tremendous drain on a municipality, especially in a smaller, rural area.)

The result of this scenario is a net loss in total EAV for the property owners “throughout” the school district. This makes it a bad civic investment. (Note my original point, “not to make an educational decision in a vacuum or bubble.”) In addition, every other taxing unit funded by Mt. Morris and Oregon residents will incur problems because the

“We have rented the Field of Dreams Movie Site field in Dyersville, Iowa for an 1867 rules match between the Oregon Ganymedes and the Canton Cornshuckers Base Ball Club of Canton, Michigan on Friday, May 27, 2022 from 7-10 p.m.,” said team captain Mark Herman. “This Memorial weekend date was the only spring or summer weekend date still available for a rental for 2022 and we were lucky to get it.”

The teams will have exclusive use of the field under the lights for 3 hours, but team members can arrive much earlier to warm up along with the general public.

Herman said there won’t be any tall corn, but getting a weekend rental with corn was going to be very hard as weekend night youth baseball tournaments sponsored by Field of Dreams get first dibs and are very popular.

The site is also booked for the new MLB August block out dates for their annual

game and few vintage teams will be getting games there in the future.

The Ganymedes’ run for a title at the 18th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball ended with a “well-played” loss to perennial tournament champion the Saginaw Old Golds in August, capping the Oregon-based team’s ‘best-ever’ run at the unique competition, held at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

The team, founded in 2005, plays at Iron Chest Field at Oregon Park East by the historic Chana School.

Vintage rules base ball (spelled as two words in the 1800s) is played with authentic wool uniforms, no gloves, and gentlemanly conduct.

Dixon scores early, fends off feisty Oregon squad

Fans had barely settled into their seats on Sept. 2 at Oregon Park West and the Dixon boys soccer team already had a lead.

Five minutes in, things weren’t looking good for the Hawks. But for the next 70 minutes, the Dukes and Oregon played to a stalemate.

Bradyn Langloss scored a pair of goals for Dixon, which eventually came away with a 3-1 win in the Big Northern game.

“I think we came out really strong, then we made a mental mistake and got a little shaky,” Dixon coach Josh Brigl said. “We recovered from there, and didn’t really give up too many chances in the second half, which is what we wanted. They played a defender deep just to try and take chances away, and we finally got another goal just at the end there.

“We gutted it out – but a win’s a win, no natter how ugly or pretty it is. We’ll take it. It’s exactly what we wanted.”

In the second minute, Dixon took advantage of its first scoring chance. In the middle of the field, Lucas Healy corralled a header and found Jacob Duet, who converted for a 1-0 lead just 1:39 into the game.

In the fifth minute, Bradyn Langloss made a run to the goal, but was fouled from behind in the penalty box. He knocked in the penalty kick, and the Dukes led 2-0 with only 4:50 gone off the clock.

But in the ninth minute, Dixon headed the ball

into its own goal to bring Oregon within 2-1, and that seemed to spark the Hawks. The Dukes dominated possession, but Oregon’s defense – led by sweeper Kyle Brechon and goalkeeper Miley Smith – repeatedly knocked away Dixon scoring chances.

“We knew we were going to get more shots than usual from Dixon, but our guys go all-out all the time, and they were all over it,” said Smith, who faced 28 shots from Dixon – 12 on goal – and made nine saves. “Kyle Brechon, he’s a good man. He saves our butt a lot. He’s kind of a leader on the defense. He sees a lot of stuff that I don’t, and he helps out the other guys.”

Oregon finished with eight shots, five on goal.

Dixon keeper Rex Blackburn made five saves.

“We could’ve given up and thought, ‘Well, chalk this one up as an L,’ but after that first five minutes, it was anybody’s game, up until the last few minutes,” Oregon coach Seger Larson said. “It was a physical game, and I’m glad our guys kept our heads and played well overall.”

With frustration mounting a bit on the Dukes’ side, Langloss finally released that pressure with a pretty 25-yard shot past Smith that found the back of the net, as Langloss finally got just enough space to get a shot off and seal the win with 2:05 to play.

“Oregon plays a very defensive formation, so it’s very hard to get a shot without having several people jump in front of the ball, but I got a good ball there at the end,” Langloss said.

Avery Grenoble ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns on five carries, the last two going 70 and 44 yards for scores on consecutive one-play drives for Polo (2-0). He and the rest of the starters sat out the entire second half.

“I was just running it the way the play was designed, and I saw a lot of green the other way, so I cut it back and turned it up the field,” Grenoble said of the 70-yard touchdown. “I was just ready to go again on that second one. If I see green, it’s a simple thing to hit it hard and keep running.”

Brock Soltow had 101 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, using a spin moves to get outside a couple of times before lowering his shoulder as he ran downfield, often taking several Raiders to bring him down.

Both backs credited the offensive line with opening big holes to spring big gainers.

“It’s a blast, I love it so much,” Soltow said about running in so much open space. “It was a big first half out of our offensive line; they played pretty good. We had a rough week of practice this week, but we showed up here tonight and our offense showed how well we

“I think we were just a little nervous at the start, but then we really picked it up,” Grenoble said. “Our linebackers started filling, we all started doing our jobs, and it was hard for them to get anywhere. That’s what I like about our defense.”

The Raiders did put together one long drive, the only time they touched the ball in the second half.

Taking over with 7:30 on the clock after Polo’s final touchdown, AFC marched 62 yards in 18 plays. AFC reached the Polo 5-yard line, but backup quarterback Nolan Rueff was tackled for a loss on fourth and goal.

A fourth-down sack by Brady Wolber and Wyatt Queckboerner on AFC’s opening drive set up the Marcos at their own 45, and Soltow scored from 18 yards out three plays later. Polo’s second drive lasted five plays, with Grenoble scoring from 10 yards out.

Soltow struck again, this time from 24 yards out, just 31 seconds into the second quarter for a 24-0 lead, then Merdian hit Sankey with the scoring strike for a 32-0 lead with 8:26 left before halftime.

Oregon Invitational: Genoa-Kingston won the invite beating Pearl City 25-17, 25-14 in the title match.

Freeport Aquin took third place with a 25-19, 25-21 win over Dakota and Eastland took fifth place beating Stockton 25-17, 27-25.

Forreston won the match for seventh place edging Lena-Winslow, 25-18, 15-25, and 15-12.

Mendota beat Oregon 25-13, 25-21, 15-11 for ninth place; Stillman finished 11th; Erie-Prophetstown 13th; and South Beloit, 15th.

Cross Country Oregon runs at Sycamore: Behind a third-place finish from Emma Smith, Dixon finished fourth at the Sycamore Invite. Dixon was fourth with 89, Sterling took seventh with 188, Rock Falls was eighth (207), and Oregon was 11th (291). Oregon’s Ella Dannhorn finished 15th in 20:06.8.

Golf Genoa-Kingston 182, Oregon 197: The Hawks fell to the Cogs in a Big Northern dual at Swan Hills, as G-K’s Landon Ritchie was medalist with a 40. Oregon’s Ryan Fox tied for runner-up with a 46, Isaac Kaltentbrun fired a 47, Brady Davis shot a 50, and Jared Glendenning added a 54.

Dakota 218, Polo 224: The Lady Marcos fell short in an NUIC dual at Silver Ridge. Kamryn Stockton led Polo with a 49, while Braelyn Velez fired a 56, Avery Faivre shot a 59, and Kealie Wilcox added a 60. Dakota’s Mia Dauphin was medalist with a 46.

North Boone 187, Oregon 191, Rochelle 205: The Hawks split a triangular at Beaver Creek, led by Brady Davis’ 45, which was tied for runner-up. Logan Sarver fired a 48, and Isaac Kaltenbrun, Jared Glendenning and Ryan Fox all added 49s for Oregon.

Polo hosted Dakota in dual: The Marcos had just two golfers in an NUIC meet against Dakota at Silver Ridge. Cody Buskohl fired a 52, and Caleb Sutton shot a 98 for Polo. Dakota had a 189, led by medalist Jason Binger’s 44.

Byron boys win: The Byron boys beat Oregon 165-205. Isaac Kaltenbrun had a 45 to lead the Hawks Oregon girls win: The Oregon girls downed Byron 196-214. Ava Hackman was a medalist with 43.

Forreston falls to Aquin: The Cards scored 242, but Aquin shot 181.

Colton McGlynn led Forreston with a 56 followed by Hayden Stralow’s 59, Cade Rudy’s 63, and Hannay Harvey’s 64. Aquin’s Lane Pierson was the medalist with a 38.

Forreston falls to Du-Pec: Durand-Pecatonica shot a 209 to the Cardinals’ 226. Kaden Ganz led Forreston with a 49 followed by Heath Schubert’s 56, Colton McGlynn’s 59, and Kaedon Motszko’s 62. Evan Folk shot a 46 for Du-Pec. Volleyball Oregon def. Amboy 25-15, 25-11: The Hawks won a non-conference match on the road, led by Jenae Bothe’s five kills. Olivia Wynn added four kills and two aces, and Sophie Stender had five digs and three aces for Oregon.

Stockton def. Polo 25-22, 25-21: Nicole Boelens had seven kills and 21 digs to lead the Marcos in an NUIC road loss. Teah Almasy added 10 assists, five digs, two kills and an ace.

It was a busy sports Saturday at OHS complex I

was out of town last weekend and missed all the activity at Oregon High School and playing fields elsewhere.

In its busiest weekend of the year, Oregon hosted a football game, volleyball tournament and huge cross country meet.

Parking spots were so hard to find on Saturday that Polo cross country team bus driver Trish Bolen told me she almost considered parking in my driveway, as my house abuts Park West. Her or any other bus driver would have been welcome.

Credit to all the good people who drive buses. Amidst today’s labor shortage, some schools are in danger of missing athletic competition because of lack of transportation.

On a similar note, Kyle Zick recently notified us that Forreston’s week 6 game with East Dubuque was changed to Saturday because of a shortage of officials. Lack of workers is everywhere and will continue to impact high-school sports.

I did see a decent fresh-soph football game on Monday night between

Oregon and Forreston, with the Cardinals coming on top 14-0. It also gave me a chance to catch up with new varsity head coach Keynon Janicke.

It’s truly a family affair with his parents on the sidelines as photog and statistician. A hometown lad like Keynon could be a lifer as Forreston coach.

Sure, some coaches aspire to move to bigger schools, but with a family atmosphere at Forreston that extends beyond kinfolk, what’s the point of leaving.

The biggest change from being an assistant to head coach?

“I find myself thinking about things a lot more at night, things that (former head coach) Kyle Zick had to figure out,” Janicke said.

Forreston’s 28-0 loss to Durand-Pecatonica was not indicative of the how much closer the

game was. Janicke felt his squad gave Du-Pec too many opportunities.

The game of the week in the NUIC will be Du-Pec and newcomer Fulton. Hard to gauge how good either team is yet, though Du-Pec has been getting plenty of love from the media.

The problem for Du-Pec will come in the playoffs. At 438 students, they are 3A. In 2019, they faced Byron in the first round.

Let’s see. Byron beat Stillman Valley 35-0. Stillman Valley beat Rock Falls 48-0 and Rock Falls beat Rockford Christian 56-0.

Does that mean RC will lose by 139 points when they play Byron on Friday? One reason Oregon was playing Forreston in a fresh-soph game is that RC used underclassmen on the varsity.

Getting back to cross country under coach Tony Hardin, Polo has started its program again. This includes the middle school, as well.

This is great news, as distance running is one of the best things for young people and the camaraderie

with fellow opponents is unmatched among other sports. It is also very inexpensive compared to other athletics.

Counting both high school and junior high kids, there were over 700 runners at Oregon Park West on Saturday. You could see why parking was at a premium with so many parents, grandparents and the like.

I ran in a much smaller 100K race in rural Madison County, Iowa the same day.

With its covered bridges and movie of the same name, this area is a tourist draw.

Call me prejudiced, but I think Ogle county is more picturesque and our farmland is better looking.

The bridges were a nice touch to the race, but overrated.

The high point of the 63-mile trek to me was the quaint town of Winterset. What a beautiful downtown courthouse and town square. Additionally, businesses and houses on the main drag had huge American flags on display.

azoellner@shawmedia.com BYRON – Less than two weeks shy of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the U.S. completed withdrawing from Afghanistan in a military operation that has garnered much criticism. It marked the end of a war that claimed the lives of at least three area service members.

Army National Guard Spc. Norman L. Cain III, of Mt. Morris, was 22 on March 15, 2009, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in Kot, Afghanistan. He died instantly, leaving behind a wife, then-3-year-old stepdaughter and then-1-yearold son.

Marine Staff Sgt. Justus S. Bartelt, of Polo, died July 16, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He had turned 27 just 12 days earlier.

Marine Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood, 19, of Byron, was on his first combat deployment when he was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Oct. 14, 2010. His parents are building a retreat for combat veterans – the Darkhorse Lodge – in Tennessee.

“For those who have fallen and have served and given so much up in Afghanistan, I’ll say this – geopolitically, this is seen as a failure. Let’s not paper that over,” U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said Wednesday.

“But I also know that there are hundreds of thousands of people right now that were able to get an education that are journalists, that are scholars – women in particular – that never would have had that chance had it not been for U.S. intervention,” he said.

“I know that, for 20 years, the American homeland was safe from organizations that seriously wanted to strike out and destroy our homeland. So there was a lot that was achieved [by service members].”

Kinzinger spoke to reporters following a roundtable with community leaders to discuss the future of Byron’s nuclear power station.

Former state Sen. Tim Bivins offered some words of kindness in 2017 to Gretchen and Kirk Catherwood, parents of Lance Corporal Alec E. Catherwood, who died in combat serving the marines in Afghanistan. They were presented with a replica of the sign that designates Illinois Route 72, from the south side of the bridge in Byron to the Ogle and DeKalb County line, as “Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood Memorial Road.”

The congressman – who currently serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard – said he is extremely angry regarding the handling of the exit from Afghanistan. It’s a feeling shared by many veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, he said.

Kinzinger joined the U.S. Air Force in 2003 and has served in the Air Force Special Operations, Air Combat Command and Air Mobility Command in addition to the Air National Guard.

“I think for too long, we’ve had leaders – frankly on both sides – that have not understood or tried to sell to the American people the reason for involvement in Afghanistan,” he said. “I could sell that reason, but we’re out now and that is what it is.”

That doesn’t negate the fact that the U.S. withdrawal involved “some of the worst military deci-

sion-making in my lifetime,” Kinzinger said.

If there’s a leader in President Joe Biden’s administration whose advice led to the actions taken, Kinzinger said he would fully expect that leader to resign out of honor.

“The American people deserved far better an exit in Afghanistan than to have the last vision be us begging the Taliban to protect us and having 13 people killed by ISIS-K,” he said.

Former President Donald Trump is responsible for “a terrible negotiation of a terrible deal,” while Biden is responsible for following through on that deal and “a terrible exit,” Kinzinger said.

Kinzinger said he’s not going to act emotionally, because his job right now is to be professional and get answers.

On Aug. 31, the congressman set a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin requesting more details on the number of people left behind; the classification those people in relation to their entry into the U.S. – such as the kind of visas they’d require or which refugee status is being granted to them; the number of pending visa or refugee statuses; and more.

He asked for written answers no later than Sept. 8.

“We need answers on how we got to here,” Kinzinger said. “But we need to do it in a way where we’re not just trying to find the political advantage in that answer.”

In addition to Cain, Bartelt and Catherwood, the area lost two others in the Iraq War, which took place from 2003 to 2011.

Army Pfc. Scott M. Tyrrell, 21, of Sterling, died Nov. 20, 2003, from wounds received when an ammunition point caught fire in Tikrit, Iraq.

Marine Lance Cpl. Andrew G. Patten, 19, of Byron, was killed Dec. 1, 2005, by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Fallujah, Iraq.

Ogle County Republican committee censures Kinzinger

rrodgers@shawmedia.com OREGON – The Ogle County Central Republican Committee voted unanimously to censure U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger last week.

The group will not give Kinzinger financial support in any future election, and the “organization has no confidence in Kinzinger’s representation of his constituents,” according to a news release from the Ogle County Republicans.

Members also voiced criticism of his “last-minute effort” to keep the Byron Nuclear Plant from closing Sept. 13. He wrote a letter to President Joe Biden a week ago calling for federal action to keep Exelon from shuttering the Byron and Dresden plants. He asked that emergency powers be used to combat the

closures until Congress passes the Preserving Existing Nuclear Generation Act, which includes a financial credit program for such plants.

“The committee was dismayed by Kinzinger’s last-minute effort to work against the closing of the nuclear plant, allowing too much time to pass before doing anything to support the extension,” said Jamey Sulser, who made the motion to censure Kinzinger during the committee meeting Tuesday.

“So, after the time had passed when something could be done about it (the nuclear plant), he decided to pander to people he knew he had let down.”

Precinct committeeman Kevin Colbert said he recently walked his district speaking with Republican voters, and no one had any positive comment about the 16th District congressman.

Kinzinger has been under fire from several

Republican groups criticizing him for voting to impeach former President Donald Trump and not supporting false claims that Trump won the 2020 election.

“The Ogle County Republicans join other area counties in their conclusion that Kinzinger listens to big money interests rather than his constituents, aligns himself with the Democrats and Nancy Pelosi, is dismissive of grass roots concerns and is disconnected from the real needs of the local area he represents,” commitee members said in the release.

Other organizations that voted to censure Kinzinger include the LaSalle County Republican Central Committee, the Will County GOP and the Central Illinois’ Iroquois County’s GOP. Kinzinger called the censure votes “petty” after hearing of the Will County vote.

Sheriff’s office releases Labor Day enforcement numbers

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office issued 198 citations including four impaired driving arrests during its Labor Day traffic safety enforcement effort. The citations included: 140 citations for speeding 4 arrests for DUI 10 arrests for no valid driver’s license 11 citations for uninsured drivers 2 citations to distracted drivers (cell phone usage) 2 arrests for drug violations 29

citations for other traffic offenses “The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with more than 200 other local law enforcement agencies from Aug. 20 through Sept. 7 to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and encourage seat belt use,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a press release.

The effort featured high-visibility enforcement

combined with a variety of outreach activities, including a media campaign.

The Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

Aug. 25 Nicholas Kasten, 39, of Oregon, was arrested at 4:15 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for no valid driver’s license.

Kasten was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Aug. 31 Christine M. McCaslin, 61, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 10:55 a.m. for violating the inoperable motor vehicle ordinance. Joshua A. MCCaslin, 39, of Oregon, was also issued a city citation for violating the inoperable motor vehicle ordinance. These violations occurred in the 100 block of N. Etnyre Avenue.

Amber Coffey, age 35, Byron, was issued a

citation at 6:05 p.m. for speeding, 43 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Sept. 1 At 2:52 a.m., police responded to a citizen complaint call at Casey’s General Store located at 901 W Washington Street resulting in the arrest of Katie J. Ruetten, 34, of Dixon, for two outstanding warrants, one out of Lee County for failure to appear, and one out of Whiteside County for failure to appear on a possession of methamphetamine charge.

Ruetten was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 3 Mitchell J. Manka, 20, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 7:29 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. Manka was transported to the Ogle

County Jail. This violation occurred in the 500 block of W. Washington Street.

County Jail. These violations occurred in the 400 block of Madison Street.

At 8:20 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Daysville Road involving a 2005 GMC driven by Daniel S. Rauch, 52, of Rockford, and a 2015 Ford driven by Cecilia M. Zimmerman, 77, of Oregon. Rauch was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Logan T. Green, 16, of Byron, was issued a citation at 8:48 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. This violation occurred in the 400 block of W. Washington Street.

Sept. 4 Jacob B. Cunningham, 24, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 1:04 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Cunningham was also issued citations for disobeying a stop sign and driving while under the influence of alcohol with blood alcohol content greater than .08%.

Sept. 5 Justin D. Street, 21, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 2:03 p.m. for possessing an improper container of cannabis as a driver.

This violation occurred in the 200 block of Jones Terrace.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reported the following activity: Sept. 1 At 7:24 a.m.. deputies along with the Illinois State Police, and Rochelle and Lynn Scott Rock Fire Departments responded to a multiple vehicle accident at Illinois Rout 64 and Lynnville Road.

After an investigation, it was discovered that Brandi Casey, 35, of Esmond, was traveling westbound on Illinois 64 in a Ford SUV when she slowed down to turn south onto Lynnville Road.

Seretha Hollingsworth, 48, of Sycamore, was directly behind Casey in a Chevy Malibu and slowed down to allow the turn. Behind Hollingsworth was Ryan Scott, 35, of Sycamore, driving a Ford SUV. Scott failed to reduce speed and struck the back of Hollingsworth’s Malibu, which then struck Casey’s Ford SUV. After the collision, Hollingsworth’s vehicle rolled into the eastbound lane and struck a

semi-truck driven by Sergio Sanchez, 45 of Elgin.

Sanchez observed and anticipated the collision allowing him to slow down to nearly a complete stop.

Mary Criscione, 55, of Byron, was also traveling westbound in a Buick sedan behind Scott’s vehicle and traveled into the north ditch to avoid the accident.

Two vehicles received disabling damage and were removed by Ron’s Towing. Medical personnel examined and released all parties involved on scene for suspected minor injuries.

Scott was cited for electronic communications device and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Billy Scott, 30, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked. Scott was arrested by deputies on I-39 near Illinois Route 64 after being stopped for speeding.

Scott was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

At 2:29 a.m., deputies located a silver Saturn sedan stuck in the ditch of the 8700 block of N. Illinois Route 2. It was determined the vehicle had driven off the edge of the parking lot, and become stuck in the ditch while turning around.

Through the course of the investigation, Roger L. Henson, 72, of Byron, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Henson was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 2 Raul Perez-Crisostomo, 38, of Streamwood, was arrested at 11:36 p.m. for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop on I-39 northbound, at mile marker 104. He was also issued a citation for speeding and released on an I-Bond.

Amber Talab, 41, of Rochelle was arrested

at 9:34 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop on I-39 near mile marker 104 southbound. She was also issued a citation for speeding. She was released on an I-Bond.

At 1:16 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the 400 block of E. North Park Drive for the report of a disturbance. After an investigation, Erik A. Guglielmi, 37 of Byron, was arrested for driving while under the Influence of alcohol, reckless driving, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct.

Guglielmi was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 6 Chemere Thomas, 20, of Rockford, was arrested for driving with no valid license after being stopped for speeding on I-39 near Illinois Route 64. Thomas was held at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of bond.

POLICE BRIEFS STERLING, IL –Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for August.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 461 citations, 579 written warnings, and made 14 criminal arrests during the month of August.

Speeding accounted for 252 citations, 30

citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 22 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Ronald R. Kalas, 82, of San Benito, TX, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Ronald was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Ortonville, Minnesota , the son of Raymond and Irene Kalas. On July 29, 1961, in Polo, he married Ms. Lucy Anne Kutz. Ron retired from Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling after many years. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ron enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling.

Survivors include his daughters Pam (Brett) Faber of Polo, Julie (Jerry Cunningham) Wiegand of Belvidere; son Bill (Jesica) Kalas

of Belvidere; sister-in-law Evelyn Kalas; brother-in-law Lyle Summers; grandchildren Christopher Faber, Suzanne Sarella, Zach Wiegand, Josh Wiegand, Becca Laws, William Kalas and Dalton Kalas; great grandchildren Jayden, Gracie, Luke, and Lily.

He was preceded in death by wife Lucy Anne; brother Robert Kalas; sisters Joan Summers and Mary Jean Gipe; son-in-law Keith Wiegand; two grandchildren Cody and Jordan Kalas.

A celebration of his life will be 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 at Faith United Methodist Church in Polo. He will be laid to rest next to his wife in a private graveside service.

Upper Mississippi River Refuge lists areas closed to hunting

THOMSON – Pools 12, 13 and 14 of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge contain areas that are closed to access or listed as no hunting zones for waterfowl, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a release Thursday.

Areas within the region that are affected include:

designated hunt sites. These sites have special permits but if no one is present one half-hour before shooting time, the site is open for hunting.

Potters Marsh Buffer Zone near Thomson . Extends 400 yards to the

west and north of the Potters Marsh Blind Management Zone at river miles 522.5 - 525 and is closed to all waterfowl hunting during the regular waterfowl hunting season.

Great River Bike Trail near Thomson.

A 50-yard no hunting zone is established along the bike trail to provide a safe passage for walkers and cyclists.

Lost Mound Unit (formerly Savanna Army Depot) near Savanna . The main

channel of Crooked Slough is closed to all hunting. All land and water east of Crooked Slough is closed to all public access.

Lost Mound Unit – Upland . Areas around office and along the west side of River Road Wildlife Drive up to the Observation Deck are closed to all hunting and trapping.

Spring Lake Sanctuary near Savanna.

Closed to all migratory bird hunting year-round and closed to all public access from Oct. 1 to the end of the Illinois duck hunting season Dec. 21.

The public is allowed to walk or bicycle to the observation deck during this time. In addition, the refuge emphasized that no migratory bird hunting is allowed in the Spring Lake Sanctuary at any time of the year.
