Metzger: New Casey’s General Store opening slated for this October

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON — After a delay, Forreston residents finally can look forward to the opening of a Casey’s General Store in their town.

“From my understanding, they’re looking at an October opening,” Village President Mark Metzger said on Tuesday.

Based in Ankey, Iowa, Casey’s is one of the leading convenience store chains in the U.S. Last year, Casey’s purchased the former The Depot building and Mobil gas station at 314 East Main St., but didn’t begin working on the property right away.

Metzger said the delay was because of another acquisition the company made around the same time.

Casey’s purchased Buchanan Energy, owner of Bucky’s Convenience Stores, for $580 million in November 2020. The deal included 94 retail stores and 79 dealer locations.

“They remodeled all those,” Metzger

said. “So from my understanding, [now that that’s done], they’re kind of back to those single stores they bought in the rural areas.”

Casey’s approached the village about three- or four years ago, saying they were interested in opening a store in town, he said. The company had approached The Depot, but a deal couldn’t be worked out at that time.

“I talked to a representative at Casey’s

and they said, ‘The good news is, if Casey’s is approaching your town, they’re interested. It’s not something that’s going to go away,” Metzger said.

After more negotiations with The Depot, a deal was worked out, he said.

“We’re excited for them to open up,” Metzger said. “As far as the village goes with permits or any applications — whether it be liquor licensing or gaming — we’re good to go on our end.”

AMBOY – Despite a broken water main that left the town with no running water, spotty cellphone service that ended a livestream of the lottery drawing and even a lightning storm, organizers of the Amboy Depot Days Car Show Raffle deemed it a success after raising $211,160.

“We dealt with some adversity and still came out on top,” raffle chairman Jeff Gerdes said, referring to a gas line leak organizers had to contend with Saturday.

The winning ticket went to Tim Hord of Dixon, who invested $100 in tickets and walked away with $105,580, Gerdes said. Hord said it’s a big and early birthday present him, as he turns 50 next week.

The raffle was part of the 30th Amboy Depot Days festival. Although the four-day extravaganza was among the casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the 2019 kitty previously swelled to $210,850.

The drawing first was held in 2001, when organizers raised a total of $8,400.

“We try to do a little better every year,” Gerdes said.

He estimated that the annual festival drew about 40,000 people to this village of about 2,500. The annual event typically features a craft fair, carnival and a beer garden, among other attractions.

The car show and the raffle, which signal the end of the festival, make Sunday the most popular day, Gerdes said.

The raffle committee also gave away 10 $3,000 prizes.

Winners of the $3,000 prizes are Tracy Ranken of Dixon; John Taets of Tampico; Jess Enas of Walnut; Melissa Galbard of Rochelle; Robert Martin of Princeton; Brandon Hess of Hinckley; John Becker of Aurora; Robert Pennell Popular of Bluff; Tim Whelan of Central Point, Oklahoma; and Marsha Scheiber, who did not list a hometown.

Raffle proceeds help pay for the upkeep of the Depot Museum, which is planning a $500,000 restoration project.

Proceeds also support local food pantries, the town’s Teen Turf center and the school library and local Girl Scouts, among other area organizations.

Oregon VFW Post was burglarized last week when someone broke into the post and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the gaming machines.

Police: burglars stole money from VFW gaming machines

OREGON – A “large amount of cash” was stolen last week from the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars during an early morning break-in, police said.

At about 6:15 a.m. Aug. 25, two subjects forcefully entered the Oregon VFW Post 8739 and Bar & Eatery at 1310 W. Washington St. and damaged the video game machines from which they stole the cash, Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville said.

Security footage showed the burglars wearing all black and masks and carrying crowbars. They drove a small black vehicle and parked it on West Oregon Trail Road while committing the break-in, Melville said.

Oregon police are investigating the

possibility that this incident might be related to other break-ins that have occurred over the past several months across the region, Melville said. The subjects seem to target places with gaming machines, he said.

“We’re investigating the possibility that it’s tied to those,” Melville said.

“We’re working with detectives from all over northern Illinois.”

He said there are possible suspects but declined to comment further on that matter.

Police are asking anyone who has any information – particularly those who might have seen something near the VFW or West Oregon Trail Road between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. Aug. 25 – to contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162 and ask to speak with Detective Josh Lee.

Motorcycle crash leaves 1 dead

MONROE CENTER – A 32-year-old Creston man was killed Saturday in a motorcycle crash near Monroe Center.

Andrew J. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene of the one-vehicle crash, which occurred in the 3000 block of North Mulford Road, according to Ogle County Sheriff’s reports.

After an on-scene investigation, police said Smith was driving south and, while approaching a curve, traveled into northbound lane and then left the roadway, coming to rest in the east ditch

where Smith was ejected from the motorcycle, the report reads.

Someone driving through the area observed Smith’s motorcycle on its side in the east ditch and called 911 at 2:18 a.m., the report states.

Monroe Center Fire Department/ Ambulance, Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Department/Ambulance, Stillman Valley Ambulance and Life Flight helicopter were dispatched to the scene. The Ogle County coroner was called to the scene and took possession of Smith’s body. Maggio Truck Center removed the motorcycle from the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

I thought all the boxes that had come into the museum had been sorted through during the summer.

All I had left was a stack of educational things to be placed in a file, and I could do that by myself.

Then I noticed a box behind the recycling bin, and I pulled it out. It was from Dick Bentley in Texas. I lifted out a few of the things, slipped them into my bag and took them home with me. I was tired for that day.

At home, in my chair, I started going through my bag to see what interesting information I would find from Richard Bentley. Dick’s mother was Helen Bentley, and I remembered her from Bracken’s Style Shop. She was a tall elegant woman who was always very helpful.

She was also connected to Sally Schell Norris, although I could not remember exactly how all that went. I also found in the “Cottage Hill School Days” written by Ed Dew that Helen Bentley had been a teacher at Cottage Hill School.

The first thing I pulled out of my bag was a big book that was the working draft of William Maxey’s book

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf “Come With Me To A War.” I had gotten all of Bill Maxey’s stuff years ago after Bill had died, and we had the finished published copies of his book stacked neatly in the military part of our museum.

What was this working draft doing in a box from Dick Bentley?

I soon realized that the working draft of Bill’s book had been sent to Dick and his wife, Margi, to be critiqued for errors. Yes, one would do that. Bill Maxey was a very close friend of Dick Bentley.

I sent the working draft of my book on the 15th Regiment to Karen Olsen and her granddaughter Stephanie so they could look for grammatical errors I might have made.

The year for this working draft of Bill Maxey’s book going to Texas was 1995. Later, Bill’s book was published in 1997. In the box was a neat list of all the errors to be corrected. Interesting

that all that had been saved all these years.

The next thing I pulled out of my bag was a book “Guadalcanal Diary”

by Richard Tregasris. Tregasris was a war correspondent, and I settled down to read his book for the next couple of days.

When I finished, I realized this was nothing we needed to keep in our museum, and I gave the book to son Bruce to read. At that point, I figured this book was all background information when all these guys went to war.

The book was a day-to-day diary of the war as seen by Tregasris. It was very interesting.

The next book I pulled out of my bag was the 100th Year History of the Kable Band of Mt. Morris. What did the Kable Band have to do with all these guys from Polo?

As I read the history of the Kable Band, I came to a place in the book that said, “The band was serving as the 129th Infantry Band in the 33rd Division at Camp Grant in Rockford.”

I had already known that Bill Maxey and Dick Bentley had been a part of the 129th Infantry Band of the

National Guard, but how and why did the Kable Band get connected to the military band?

As I read further in the book, the connection was made after 1923 when L. M. DeArvil was director of the Kable Band. The little booklet said, “DeArvil served as director for four years, during which time the band became the regimental band of the 129th Infantry, Illinois National Guard (I.N.G.).”

That answered how, but not why.

All these Polo guys who graduated in the 1930s were excellent musicians, they had no funds to go to college, and the National Guard Band gave them the opportunity to use their musical skills.

They practiced at Camp Grant and they gave concerts all over northern Illinois. It was an interesting time for them, and it was interesting to know that the military band was also connected to the Kable Band.

Next week I will go into the history of the Kable Band from Mt. Morris.

Reynoldses working to restore historic Polo movie theater to 1940s glory

POLO – From inside every nook and cranny and from around every corner, history peeks out at visitors to 110 E. Mason St. The light bulbs hiding on the underside of the marquee beneath the furring strips. The original tiling outlining the men’s and women’s restrooms.

The formerly neon-lit letters spelling “POLO” tucked away in the basement. And upstairs, sitting in plain sight, the old film projectors – so heavy they’d likely cause the stairs to collapse if anyone tried to carry them out.

“It takes a minute to just take it all in,” owner Cynthia Reynolds said.

Located in downtown Polo, the building was constructed by the Upton family in 1944 and opened as a movie theater in 1945, according to an article in the Feb. 5, 1960, edition of the Freeport Journal-Standard.

Upton and Virginia Brown sold the building to Roscoe Shipman, who used it to house a Gambles – a retail chain that went out of business in 1984, according to the article.

In the 1970s, it became a pharmacy and hardware store,

Reynolds said.

She and her husband, James Reynolds, purchased the property in February with restoration in mind.

“It’s just, there’s something about the building that I was, ‘We gotta have it. We gotta

restore it,’ ” she said.

Today, if one steps through the front door onto the level floor, they’d find boxes and shelves filled with things previous owners never threw away – much of it now organized, thanks to Reynolds. Across the

room is the built-up stage that served as a pharmacy.

A glance at the theater blueprints shows that’s not what a visitor 75 years ago would have seen.

Customers who entered the then-cavernous space were greeted by a terrazzo flooring mosaic near the entrance. A little ways inside – past the restrooms, manager’s office and concessions – the floor began sloping down toward the stage. There was seating for about 130 people and light strips illuminated the aisles leading to the front rows.

“If you look more closely at the blueprints, you will see everything – because it shows you everything,” Reynolds said.

The blueprints were found in the basement, but they weren’t the only fun thing down there, Reynolds said.

This column is the second in a series that will explain some of the activities that we do at school in order to build the skills necessary for learning to read and write.

This information might help us be better able to understand some of the papers that come home so that we can discuss our children’s or grandchildren’s schoolwork with them as we ask about their day.

Learning what is called the alphabetic principle is a foundational part of early reading instruction. The alphabetic principle is the understanding that letters have names and that the letters represent certain sounds.

Additionally, time is spent learning the names of letters, the sounds for which they stand and how to write the letters.

If we think about it, these ideas are very abstract for young learners. It takes time and lots of exposure in many different ways for children to understand and to learn all about the letters of the alphabet. Learning and singing the alphabet song is one good way to begin. It helps children start to understand the 26 letters and their names.

Children may come home singing the familiar song, and that’s an easy one for

Sing in the car, in the bathtub or on the way to bed at night. You can also help by pointing to the letters as you sing the song slowly. A simple strip of paper with the letters printed in order (both upper and lowercase) works well for this.

Another good way to become familiar with letters and sounds is to look at alphabet books. There are a large variety of alphabet books available, and they are written for all ages. For young children, choose those with clear illustrations and simple text.

You can help your child look for letters in his or her name in the alphabet book. You could compare two or more books and discover what the picture is in each one for a favorite letter. An alphabet book made by your child may come home, too.

Often, students get to choose the picture they want for each letter in these books. That helps them associate a picture with a letter and may help them

learn the sounds for the letters as well.

Be sure to spend some time reading your child’s alphabet book.

The manner in which letters are taught varies greatly from school to school. Most programs introduce the letters with sounds that are the easiest to pronounce first, and they may introduce four or five at a time, then spend some time reviewing those letters and/ or sounds before moving on to more letters.

For example, one of the first letters usually learned is the letter S. The sound is easy to make, and it is often associated with a snake because of the sound and formation.

You might see papers come home that have a picture along with some handwriting practice of both the lowercase and capital letter. In this case, the picture might go with a story and a jingle the children have learned to help them remember the sound represented by each letter. We can ask our children and grandchildren questions about papers that come home with alphabet letters.

We might have a conversation with them like this: Tell me about this letter. Is it a letter in your name? Do you know the name of the letter? Do you

While the GE sign will be sold to help pay for renovations, the letters are staying, she said. They’ll be fabricated, powder-coated and altered to run LED lights before being returned to their original place above the marquee.

“We’re definitely going to put the marquee to use because once we reveal all that, anytime there’s an anniversary or somebody has a baby or the Marcos’ are playing their games, it’s going to be advertised,” Reynolds said.

Upstairs also was a treasure trove, with findings such as the theater’s original ticket windows, Simplex oil for the antique projectors, oil for the popcorn machine and bags for said snack, movie reel storage boxes and a mechanism to rewind films.

“When they made it a Gambles store, they basically just shoved everything up here and didn’t bother to go through it,” Reynolds said. “Well, being a history major and historian, I started going through everything.

“It’s super fun and cool, and it does not feel like a chore when you’re over here [cleaning]. Well, the day we were taking the shelves down felt like a chore.

We were so sore and our bodies felt like we were hitting muscle failure.”

All of us learn things best when they are meaningful to us. Many preschool and kindergarten activities center on the children’s names. A child’s name is often the first word they learn to read and write. Being familiar with the names of the letters in their own name helps children as they work on learning the whole alphabet.

As you help your children or grandchildren learn about their names, talk about the names of the letters. Label things with their name so they can see it over and over again in many places.

Make it a celebration when they can recognize their name. Then, celebrate again when they can write it.

It is also important to check with your child’s teacher if you have questions about the expectations for learning the names and sounds for the letters of the alphabet. Then you can support your children and grandchildren in this exciting learning that will open up the world of reading and writing to them.

“As I was going through things, I recognized the books that they had,” she said. “Every movie that they had shown and they had to keep track of the movie, when it played, who paid, what tickets – like children’s tickets – and then they sent off the receipts. Isn’t that amazing?”

For now, the Reynoldses are busy cleaning and organizing all their discoveries, some of which later will be displayed. But they have plans for 110 E. Mason St., including a new name for

the building.

They named it The Honoré Centre, after Bertha Honoré Palmer, an American socialite active in women’s, artistic and civic affairs in Chicago in the late 1800s. Reynolds said the spelling “centre” is meant to emphasize the meaning of “a point that does not move.”

“We intend to support art and creativity in the community, and we plan on going nowhere,” she said.

The ultimate goal is for it to be a theater once more, but that’s four or five years down the road, Reynolds said. In the meantime, the plan is to use the

building as venue space – at least once the main floor is cleaned up and decorated.

Upstairs will take a bit more time, she said. Plans for that floor include a conference room, office, reception area and kitchenette.

Come Christmastime, Reynolds is planning to host a little winter wonderland where kids can meet Santa Claus.

“It’s going slowly, but it will get done,” Reynolds said of renovations. “I have to have it [the main floor] done by Christmas because I want that little winter wonderland.”

Fall sports begins with thrilling win by Marcos With fall sports in full swing, it’s time to get back to sports writing.

Well, that plus some ego stroking.

Last week, a rural Polo farmer told me he missed reading my column this summer and wondered how soon it would be starting again.

Speaking of Polo, how about the thrilling 40-38 win over Milledgeville in eight-man football? Coming in, the Marcos had the advantage of two years of eight-man experience, while Milledgeville had the edge in seeing tougher competition in the NIC over same period.

Remember when there was talk of combining Polo and Milledgeville into a football co-op a few years ago?

Who would have thought the eventual solution the incorporation of eight-man ball, thus maintaining each town’s grid identity.

The game also marked another level of respectability for Illinois high-school eight-man. This was not one of the many blowouts Polo has had since they made the change.

With several fellow NUIC members following suit, Polo will have far greater challenges, more familiar opponents and easier road trips.

As an Oregon resident, I made the

Parents, students and fans have pent-up enthusiasm for football in the fall. There was a buzz in the air not present in the spring.

Dixon’s size, speed, depth and experience overwhelmed Oregon, due in part an enrollment disparity of 340 students.

However, the Hawk freshman looked impressive in a narrow loss.

With 23 kids on the roster and a strong eighth grade class, there is optimism for the long-range future.

Oregon catches a break this week with Rockford Christian coming to town. RC had dropped out of the conference the last few years for football and hasn’t improved much, as evidenced by a 56-0 trouncing at the hands of Rock Falls.

smaller school to stick it out for 11-man football in the brutally tough NUIC. There are no easy games and some decent teams from the league will not be in the playoffs because of simple mathematics.

At 173 students, Stockton is third-smallest school still playing 11-man. Orangeville used to be the smallest before joining eight-man.

Strangely, West Carroll is not playing a varsity schedule because virtually zero juniors or seniors wanted to play. The Thunder was in the 2A playoffs in 2019 and gave semifinalist Fieldcrest all they could handle in Round 1.

For a school of 305 kids, the current lack of participation is a sad commentary. Then again, the combination of Savanna, Thomson and Mt. Carroll never has been a hot bed of football. Wrestling and basketball yes, but not football.

Maybe they will be next to join eight-man. Amboy has about same enrollment and also joined eightman.

Credit to area school officials for proceeding full speed ahead with outdoor sporting events in the heat and humidity of last week. I’m sure

that farmer I was talking to never was allowed to stay inside as a youth when there was hay to bail or other fieldwork.

The same way he grew from the experience, it is healthy for high schoolers to have some weather adversity, provided it’s not a lightning storm.

Trust me, lightning does make a person run faster, as I found out a couple weeks ago on a mountain ridge out west. I was only a few miles from finishing a 50-mile race and once the storm came in, my pace picked up considerably.

I guess my legs weren’t as tired as I thought. This Saturday, it’s off to Iowa for a 100K race around scenic Madison County and its many bridges.

But after doing the bulk of my training on rural roads around Ogle County, I’d put our farmland scenery up against anywhere in the country.

Resurfaced blacktop battle goes to Polo Marcos

ccutter@saukvalley.com POLO – The “Battle of the Blacktop” between Polo and Milledgeville has resurfaced, and the Marcos appear to have written the start of the rivalry’s new chapter.

And what a start to that chapter it was. With 5:25 to play in the fourth quarter on Aug. 27, Polo regained a twopoint lead in a hard-fought game after a Tyler Merdian pass to Kahil Sankey from 40 yards out. Merdian then put the Marcos up by two with a successful 2-point pitch to the left side to Tyler Grenoble for the 40-38 win.

Brady Wolber’s interception with 1:35 to play in the game sealed the win for the Marcos.

The first half wound up being a shootout up until a halftime tie at 26.

The Marcos owned brief leads during the run, but the Missiles came back each time.

Milledgeville’s first drive of the game penetrated the Marcos red zone, but an interception by Polo’s Brady Wolber stopped that run short. The Marcos’ next drive was successful; after a successful short pass from quarterback Tyler Merdian to Kahil Sankey for 63 yards, Brock Soltow ran 3 yards for the score and an 8-0 lead after Merdian ran the point-after opportunity.

Missiles quarterback Connor Nye responded just a couple of plays into his team’s next drive with a 36-yard run from their 4-wide formation right through the Marcos’ line. His point-after pass fell incomplete, however, and the Missiles trailed 8-6.

Avery Grenoble kicked off the second quarter for the Marcos with a 25-yard run along the right side for a 14-6 lead. Nye’s next passing score came to Kieren Harris from 13 yards out, but the point-after run failed to keep the Missiles trailing by two at 14-12.

The Marcos came back and controlled the clock en route to Soltow’s second score from a yard out with 2 minutes remaining in the half for a 20-12 lead. Nye and the Missiles responded with their third TD with 1:33 left in the half to get back to within two, but Nye’s run during the point-after try ended with a sack by Polo’s Wyatt Queckboerner, who preserved his team’s lead for the time being.

The Marcos responded once more after Grenoble’s 41-yard TD run around right end, but once again their PAT try failed to keep their lead to within eight.

Nye’s passing success then responded once more with a 4-yard connection to Ashton Nobis to get back to within two, and then the Missiles made good on the ensuring point-after pass to Bryce Aude

Grenoble amassed 163 yards on 15 carries by halftime. Nye had 162 yards both on the ground and in the air at the half.

Soltow added another 1-yard run with 8:05 to go in the third quarter for a 32-26 lead.

The rivalry dates back to when the Marcos and Missiles became conference rivals starting in the former Upstate Illini Conference in 1991, but was halted when the Marcos joined the 8-man ranks in 2019.

This is Milledgeville’s first year playing the modified football format.

“I thought we played extremely hard, but obviously when you look at their O-line versus our our O-line, our D-line versus their D-Line, then you cross them on over, they obviously have the depth and the size and the strength, and we have some inexperience,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said. “We only have one returning offensive lineman – Evan Flaherty – and we moved him from left tackle to center, so he’s also learning a new position, and he was battling a little knee injury tonight. I think we showed improvement through the game tonight.”

12 OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reported the following activity. Readers are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proved guilty.

Aug. 24 Kaylie Barber, 32, of Stillman Valley was arrested at 8 a.m. on a charge of driving with a revoked driver’s license following a traffic stop at the intersection of Wilson and Pine streets in Stillman Valley. She was also cited for no insurance and transported to Ogle County Jail.

Shykierah Taylor, 23, of Rockford was arrested on a charge of no valid driver’s license after deputies stopped her vehicle at about 11:20 a.m. in the parking lot of Sam’s Drive-In in Byron. Taylor also was cited for an illegal window tint and expired registration.

She was transported to Ogle County Jail.

Aug. 25 Dorian Bizzle, 19, of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, was arrested on a charge of driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center. Bizzle was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 11:53 a.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash with an injury that had occurred earlier in the morning. After an investigation, deputies said Joshua Drake, 39, of Walnut was traveling south in his Jeep in the 8000 block of South Carthage Road when he partially struck a tree limb in the roadway. Drake traveled partially off the east side of the road while trying to avoid the tree limb. He then traveled off the west side of the roadway before striking a tree, causing heavy front-end damage.

Drake later checked himself into KSB Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Deputies and the Oregon Fire Protection District responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 2900 block of South Ridge Road at 4:51 p.m. An investigation revealed a vehicle driven north by Nathaniel Bramm, 39, of Dixon traveled off the east edge of the roadway and struck a culvert before coming to rest in a cornfield. Bramm was taken by Oregon emergency medical services to KSB Hospital for apparent minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

An investigation revealed that a Toyota 4Runner driven by a 17-year-old male was traveling east on Hales Corner when the driver left the roadway and overcorrected before overturning in the south ditch. The 17-year-old was examined for suspected minor injuries at the scene and released. He was cited for improper lane usage and the vehicle removed by Nielsen Towing & Recovery.

Aug. 30 At 1:04 a.m, deputies along with Byron EMS responded to the 8900 block of North Illinois Route 2 for a single vehicle rollover accident with injuries. An investigation revealed that Chase Clarke, 28 of Byron was traveling north on Route 2 when he attempted to evade a group of deer in the roadway.

Clarke lost control of the vehicle and overturned in the west ditch. He was treated for suspected minor injuries and taken to a local hospital. The vehicle was removed by Maggio’s, and no citations were issued.

Polo for the report of a domestic disturbance. After an investigation, John W. Simmons, 43, of Polo was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, criminal damage to property, and disorderly conduct.

Heat couldn’t put a damper on 2021 StrawFest

azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS — With a heat index around 100 degrees, the last thing many people wanted to do last weekend was hang around in the sun.

Luckily for the sixth annual U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition, it had an edge.

“The fortunate thing for us, and the real advantage we have over other venues, is we’re in the shade,” organizer Jeff Bold said.

The U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition is a 17-day event which ran Aug. 13-29. It culminated in Straw Fest, a three-day fête with music, food vendors, blacksmith demonstrations, line dancing, straw bale races and more.

On Aug. 28, the day the winning sculptures were announced, attendance did drop off from mid-morning to the afternoon because of the heat, but by evening when Fortunate Sons — a Credence Clearwater Revival tribute band — started playing, the crowd numbered around 600, Bold said.

Continued from Page 14 “It ended up being a great day,” he said. “It was a little scary in the middle, knowing we had good money out for the band and we’d lost the crowd because of the heat. But it ended up being a great weekend.”

Apart from attendance, the heat also impacted the straw bale races.

Normally, participants in the race would run a set of preliminaries and then be placed in a bracket, Bold said.

“With the heat and the issue we had with the straw, we just took the top time,” he said.

Five straw sculptures were entered in this year’s competition. They must be a minimum of 6.5 feet in height, length or width and at least 90% straw on the surface, according to competition rules.

“This takes anywhere from several weeks to several months [to construct], depending on the piece,” Bold said.

Lentz and the other two entries — “Lighthouse,” by Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, of Mt. Morris, and “Shark Man,” by Chris and Cecilia Mann, of Rockford — all tied for third in the Artists’ Choice awards.
