Roe family to be featured at Aug. 21 event at the Oregon Depot The Oregon Depot program, Those Were the Days, will feature a well known family in this area, dating back to 1837.

Dr. John B. Roe was the first doctor in Ogle County. His great grandson, Judge John B. Roe of Grand Detour, a life long public servant, passed away late last year.

The program will be led by, John M. Roe of Rochelle. John was the owner/operator of Roe’s

Sale Barn near Chana John’s father started the sale barn in the early 1930s and John came back from WWII in 1946 to run the business.

John will be joined by his son John and nephew John H. Roe of Minnesota. John H. Was the son of Morris M. Roe who served as Ogle County Circuit Clerk in the 1960’s.

Judge Ben (John B. Roe IV ) Roe of Grand Detour will be with us to share family history and stories.

GriefShare Support Group to begin again on Aug. 26 in Mt. Morris Disciples United Methodist Church, Mt. Morris, will resume its GriefShare Support Group, beginning Thursday, Aug. 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Fireplace Room at the church, 102 Maple Ave. The group will meet every Thursday evening through Nov. 18.

GriefShare is available to anyone in the church, community, or surrounding towns.

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Whether students must mask up in Ogle County schools is out of the hands of local leaders.

On Aug. 4, Gov. JB Pritzker issued an executive order mandating that masks be worn in Illinois schools by students, staff and visitors age 2 and older who are medically able to tolerate a face covering, regardless of vaccination status. The order also applies to day cares, nursing homes and longterm care facilities. It brings the state in line with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

The mandate forced a swift change of plans for Oregon, Polo and Forrestville Valley school districts, all of which plan to obey the order, according to their respective superintendents. If a district doesn’t comply, it risks losing state funding and insurance coverage and is opened to additional liability.

“In general, our families have been pretty good and understanding that this wasn’t a local decision,” said Tom Mahoney, Oregon Community Unit School District superintendent. “But, obviously, they’re frustrated with the sudden reversal.

“They’re feeling unempowered because of the change that occurred from the governor’s office,” he said.

Officials from Oregon, Polo and Forrestville Valley school districts in late July released back-to-school plans recommending – but not requiring – masks, except on district transporta-

tion. The plans included COVID-19 mitigation measures that would be adjusted throughout the 2021-22 school year based on local data.

As of Aug. 6, Ogle County’s seven-day rolling average of COVID-19 test positivity rate had increased to 4.5%, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. The data is on a three-day lag.

Pritzker’s order essentially takes away local control and the ability to use local data to determine what’s best

for an individual district’s students and community, Mahoney said. Now, a municipality’s positivity rate doesn’t matter – everyone is subject to the same restrictions, he said.

Polo Community Unit School District Superintendent Kelly Mandrell said she has seen a variety of reactions to the executive order.

“It’s been a mix,” Mandrell said.

“However, our board understands – and we feel our community understands – there’s a point when it’s out of

our hands.”

The main objective is to keep the children safe and educate students, which is what the district plans to do, she said.

“We’re going to keep moving forward,” Mandrell said. “We really appreciate the community’s support during this time.”

Forrestville Valley School District Superintendent Sheri Smith could not be reached for additional comment before deadline.

Jamboree: Chicago Tribute Anthology to perform Aug. 20 The Bel-Airs Aug. 13

Missouri-based blues and rock band The Bel-Airs will make their debut at the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, Aug. 13, presenting a free twohour concert starting at 7 p.m.

Fronted by brothers Dick and Dave Pruitt on bass and electric guitars, with Michael Cherry on drums, The Bel Airs play a danceable mix with an authentic but eclectic bluesy-country-soul-and-rock ’n’ roll sound influenced by the likes of Wilson Picket, Slim Harpo, Howlin’ Wolf and Johnny Cash.

Chicago Tribute Anthology Aug. 20

The Chicago Tribute Anthology will perform a free two-hour concert on Friday, Aug. 20, from 7-9 p.m.

In April 1969, a new rock ’n’ roll band burst onto the scene garnering

nationwide attention. Born in the Midwest and infused with elements of jazz, blues and Latin influences, the first album by “Chicago Transit Authority,” or CTA as they were commonly known, went double platinum.

Such hits as “Beginnings,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Question 67 & 68” propelled the band to popularity.

“With a rock rhythm section led by the brilliant guitarist Terry Kath, a powerful horn section, and unique vocals, the band now known simply as ‘Chicago’ released their second album in January of 1970,” Jamboree organizer Larry Ubben said. “Considered by many to be the band’s breakout album, Chicago 2 would also go platinum with hits like ‘Make me Smile,’ ‘Colour My World’ and ‘25 or 6 to 4.’ ”

Chicago became a dominant force in popular music during the 1970s, producing at least one new album each year. This period was marked by the release of classic songs like “Free,” “Saturday in the Park,” “Dialogue,” “Just You ’n Me,” “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,” “Call On Me” and “Old Days,” to name a few.

“CTA brings to life the ‘Golden Age’ of Chicago by meticulously recreating many of the great songs from the first 11 albums,” Ubben said.

Members include Tom Anderson, Paul Bata, Terry Geraci, Paul Mabin, Chuck Parrish, Reed Pauley, Dan Peters and John Springbrunn.

Concessions for the evening will be provided by the Mt. Morris Senior Center, serving pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, chips, soda, water and baked goods starting at

6 p.m.

“The campus will be extra festive that evening as the 6th annual National Strawsculpting Competition continues, with new sculptures on display all around the south end of the Campus until Aug. 29,” Ubben said.

The Radical Botanicals show continues at the Encore Art Gallery next door on the first floor of Old Sandstone, open from 6:30-9 p.m. Local small business vendors will often be joining us on the campus with fresh produce and crafts as well as Grandpa’s Ice Cream truck.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Pinecrest Grove Community Center, 500 Evergreen Lane, seven blocks south of Route 64 off McKendrie Street.

Organizers: Strong showing at Sauerkraut Days

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – Jaxen Altensey enjoyed dousing Monty Cotter in cold water so much that the 4-year-old eventually had to be carried away by his father.

“I didn’t hit him sometimes, but I did lots of times,” Jaxen later said as he played with a white balloon.

The un-dunk tank was new this year at Forreston Sauerkraut Days, replacing the usual dunk tank as a precaution against COVID-19.

Overall, it was a good weekend, said Jane Koeller, Sauerkraut Days committee member. “[It was] hot, but at least it was dry, so that was huge,” Koeller said. “It seemed like everything was really well attended. … It was just so nice to see everybody out and about.”

The weather always is a concern, so it’s a relief when Forreston Sauerkraut Days is over and went well, she said.

“It’s like, ‘Whew, we did it,’ ” Koeller said.

Per usual, the watermelon-eating contest was popular, as were the craft and vendor show; the car show, which had more than 120 entries; and the sauerkraut lunch, she said.

The Forreston Lions Club hosts the car show, and the Forreston American Legion hosts the sauerkraut lunch.

For youngsters, there also was the playground and bouncy house – both things Jaxen enjoyed.

Forreston Sauerkraut Days is a great community event that allows different groups to come together for a weekend, Koeller said.

“I’m really impressed with our community,” she said. “Because it is hard to get the volunteers to do this, so to pull it off is kind of a cool thing.”

Small animals, big world: Kids learn about wildlife

There was Sheldon, a three-banded armadillo; Pooh, the kinkajou; Poppy, an eclectus parrot; and Dandelion, the aptly named lionheaded rabbit.

Then there was Sammy, an African straw-colored fruit bat; Lexi, a Children’s python; Creston, the New Caledonia gecko; a pair of 9-week-old lesser Madagascar tenrecs; and, of course, Chloe, the Linnaeus’ two-toed sloth.

In the end, 8-year-old Drago couldn’t pick just one favorite.

“My favorite one was – I don’t know.

All of them. I don’t got a favorite because all of them are my favorite,” the Mt. Morris boy said.

Pooh, Lexi, Chloe and friends were introduced to Drago and others as part of a free educational presentation by the Flying Fox Conservation Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit.

Dawn Winters and Debbie Herman – leaders of the children’s programs at the Mt. Morris and Oregon public libraries, respectively – organized the Aug. 6 program. It was paid for by the Maggie & Amos Foundation and held at the Rock River Center in Oregon.

Most of the animals were handled by Scott Heinrichs, founder of the Flying Fox Conservation Fund, while educator and speaker Christine Gomoll provided attendees an overview of each species and its part in the world’s ecosystem.

The Mt. Morris and Oregon libraries had tried to host the program as a kickoff to the summer reading programs, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and they had to reschedule, Herman said. At the start of this year’s summer reading

Flying Fox Conservation Fund’s goal is “to save Old World fruit bat populations and their habitat with a nonconfrontational approach to reach solutions which benefits bats, peoples and ecosystems,” according to its website.

“Flying fox” is another name for fruit bats such as Sammy, There are more than 180 species of Old World fruit bats, according to Britannica.

“We also like to do work to educate and bring awareness of animals and the planet and how they coexist together, how we need them, what they’re about, their benefits, how they’re struggling and things like that just to bring awareness to people,” Gomoll said after the program. “We know about the lions and the tigers and the bears, but who knows what a tenrec is, you know?”

Grand Detour preservation site dedicated

azoellner@shawmedia.com Descendants of Samuel and Edna Hill gathered Monday at the edge of 92 acres of land that had been in their family for generations to celebrate its transition to a public preservation site.

In 2019, family members sold the parcel – located south of Grand Detour, just off state Route 2 – to Middle Rock Conservation Partners, allowing for the land’s ecological restoration. On Monday, the site was official dedicated as the Samuel & Edna Hill Preservation Site.

“I’m so glad I contacted you the second time,” Carol Wilson, the Hills’ granddaughter, told MRCP Director Deb Carey during the event.

“So am I,” Carey replied.

“It was definitely an answer to my prayers, and I just want to thank you for everything,” Wilson said.

“MRCP for all the work that they do and have done. It’s just, it’s really great.”

MRCP is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works in Lee and Ogle counties and southeastern Whiteside County to protect habitat and provide stewardship for species in greatest need of conservation.

When the nonprofit first was organizing, members debated how far they would go, MRCP President Austin

Webb said. Would they go cut brush and do prescribed burns and leave it at that, or would they do more?

“Deb [Carey], of course, was like, ‘No. We need to make sure we can protect land also,’ ” Webb said, slamming his fist on a table in mock imitation of Carey.

“And we were like, ‘I don’t know, maybe,’ and her and Cody [Considine, MRCP vice president] said, ‘Leave it in there! We have to be able to do

that because we never know what opportunity might present itself.’ ” The opportunity to purchase the 92-acre site with a mostly savanna-type habitat came in July 2019, he said.

MRCP didn’t have any money, so it applied for a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.

Savanna habitats are even more rare than original prairie habitats – and there’s only one-tenth of 1% of original

prairie left in Illinois, Webb said.

Many of the species present on the preservation site were identified by Cassandra Rogers in the 1980s. At the time, she was an ecologist for the Illinois Department of Transportation. Her job was to examine the proposed highway projects and look for natural resources and potential impacts on them.

When the project to reconstruct the portion of state

Route 2 that is the Grand Detour bridge came up, Rogers’ team was on it.

“They wanted to move the bridge over and build the new bridge next to the existing bridge so they could keep Route 2 open to traffic during construction,” she said.

Through surveys, Rogers discovered yellow birch trees – an endangered species – on the west side. So they turned

Monday was a busy day at the museum. It was the last day I would have my helper and several boxes of information would have to be taken up to Aplington House.

Also, a little ironing board from the 1930s would need to be placed in the children’s room. It had been repaired.

I had two bags of Underground Railroad information that needed to be placed in the cabinet that holds all of that information. I am no longer giving programs, but all of the information that has been researched and documented needed to be where it can be accessed in the future.

It all made its way to Aplington House, and then we settled down to the office room to clear off the tops of tables. I was also waiting for Paul Hanson and his family from Anchorage, Alaska.

I arrived at home and had just settled in my chair when the phone rang.

It was Paul. He said, “I am across the street from City Hall and where is the museum?”

I told him that he was one block south of Mason Street when he needed to be in the block north of Mason Street. I would be at the museum in just a few minutes. I grabbed my walker and headed for the car.

They had been visiting cemeteries

in the area and old farms. Their ancestors were Joseph Rogers and his wife Hannah. They also were connected with Rebecca Middleton who was our milliner in Polo in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I settled the adults down with what information I had.

Then I took the young people in high school and middle school back to the military museum and we talked about the 15th Regiment.

They were most interested and very well behaved. In fact, when they left, the young folks shook hands with me, and that is very unusual to have children so very polite in this day and age.

The family was headed for Springfield for a family reunion on the mother’s side and I remembered all the family reunions we have had in that city.

After they toured the museum and found out where Rebecca’s house had stood in relation to the museum, they headed on to a three-hour trip to Springfield. It was nice to have them stop by in Polo.

The flag picture has been nicely put back together and is ready to hang in the museum. It was given by E.D. Reck.

I found a short announcement of when Mr. Reck purchased the variety store in Polo. It said “E. D. Reck takes possession of J. T. Clark Variety Store. June 1, 1925.” So from that time until he sold the store to LeRoy Rebuck, he would have been a businessman in Polo. He was born in 1891 and died in 1964.

“So then when we were looking around, there were a lot of plants like shooting stars and bird foot violet and puccoons and club moss and a lot of

different plants that were indicative of a savanna, a prairie-type habitat.”

Rogers’ team of engineers found a creative way protect the area by designing the retaining wall that’s there today.

The preservation site eventually will be open to the public for hiking, birding and passive recreation, but the

exact date is uncertain, Webb said.

“We’re not like, ‘Oh, we’re private owners and whatever.’ It belongs to everybody,” he said. “This is now a piece of land that really does belong to anyone who wants to go out there and hike on it. And I’m not saying pick flowers off it, do whatever you want, but it’s now a part of the community.”

Ogle is home to 2 historic limestone buildings Editor’s note: Otto Dick of Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

By OTTO DICK During our daily rides around Ogle County we notice numerous beautiful limestone houses and several limestone quarries.

Ogle County landscape is basically composed of limestone, sandstone and dolomite deposits. These deposits were formed during the Ice Ages.

Our rolling landscapes of these deposits were covered with shallow glacial agricultural deposits. Limestone in the pioneer days was an important material for buildings and foundations. Lime kilns produced raw quicklime used in mortar, which was used by masons when constructing limestone structures.

Two lime kilns that burned limestone producing mortar still exist in Ogle County. One of these is on Limekiln Road located near Oregon, and the other is the Buffalo Grove Lime Kiln located near Polo.

The Buffalo Lime Kiln was acquired by the Polo Historical Society in 1985. A restoration project began in 1992 at a cost of $10,000.

William Moats’ home in Lafayette Township was built in 1843 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The wooden upper portion of the kiln had deteriorated completely beyond repair and had to be entirely replaced. This lime kiln was added to the National Register in 2002. The Buffalo Lime Kiln is located on the Galena Trail Road. Both kilns were constructed of native limestone.

A schoolhouse in Polo was built of a blue limestone found near the bottom of the Polo Quarries, which was

called the blue glass rock.

The Polo Newspaper of 1867 reported this handsome school building of blue limestone rock cost about $20,000. By 1898 this building was razed and a new school building of cream colored brick was erected.

John Heller was a stone Mason born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1840. At a young age, he moved Oregon for 40 years.

During the Civil War he was a member of Company K, 15th Illinois Infantry. His occupation was a stone mason and he lived at 607 S. Fifth St. The tools used in the quarry were wedges, stone drills and bits of various sizes, chisels, stone hammers and slips.

Most of these tools were produced in local blacksmith shops. Before concrete blocks and concrete walls all basement walls were limestone.

These stones were shaped on the job site. My parents’ house and many others in Oregon had limestone basement walls. I have photos of several stone buildings in Oregon and one that served as a service station.

Around World War II, concrete blocks replaced limestone for basement walls. In Oregon, Wood Brothers Manufacturing manufactured metal forms to produce concrete block.

So in Ogle County we have two limestone structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

These are the above-mentioned Polo Lime Kiln and in Lafayette Township we have a limestone house listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This house was located on the William Moats Farm located on Wood Road and added to the National Register in 1987.

A child’s vocabulary develops from reading habits It sometimes seems impossible to keep up with all of the papers that come home from school, especially if you have several school-age children.

As a teacher I often thought about how much work and effort went into many of those papers. I know, though, that the finished product doesn’t always show what the child had to do to complete it. It also isn’t always evident what skills were being practiced.

For the next several columns I’d like to explain some of the activities that we do at school in order to build the skills necessary for learning to read and write.

This information might help us be better able to discuss our children’s or grandchildren’s schoolwork with them as we ask about their day. It also might help us understand some of the papers that come home.

I’ll begin this month with skills for pre-readers and early readers focusing on oral language.

The importance of oral language cannot be understated. A child’s vocabulary develops from being read to, from hearing stories told, from repeat-

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner ing nursery rhymes, from singing and from having conversations with the people in their world.

As a child learns to read, it is much easier to figure out, or decode, a new word if it is a word they’ve heard over and over in spoken language.

A rich oral vocabulary also helps students’ reading comprehension when they learn to read. Oral language eventually leads to writing, and the stronger the oral language is, the easier it will be to write.

At school, all of this is why we read aloud often, why we teach and repeat nursery rhymes many times, and why we sing and dance throughout the school day, particularly in preschool and kindergarten.

You might see copies of nursery rhymes and poems we’ve said together over and over again come home. If they do, ask your children or grand-

children to tell you about them. If they’re not sure what something is, read it to them and they’ll join in.

It would be good to collect these in a folder or a notebook to be read and reread often. This builds fluency and is an excellent way for children to begin learning to read words. Children see the words that are repeated over and over in nursery rhymes and poems and one day they will notice those words in other places. That is a moment to celebrate!

The importance of oral language is also why we talk to our students. We give lots of directions, but we also engage students in conversation about themselves and learn what’s important to them.

Learning how to respond to adults and to their peers and knowing about good manners are all important school skills. School is much easier if children have had plenty of opportunities at home talking with siblings, parents or grandparents and practicing good manners.

Understanding the stories we hear – whether they are stories in a book or

stories told about our families by our relatives – is called listening comprehension. That builds the foundation for reading comprehension when children learn to read. If listening comprehension isn’t strong, a child will have difficulty understanding what they read.

You might see a drawing come home from school. It might be your child’s way of showing what a story they heard was about. Ask them to explain their drawings to you. They might also be able to tell you more about the story.

A lot of things happen throughout the school day to build this important foundation of oral language.

Since the focus is building oral language, you may not actually see papers come home for these activities, but think about the idea of oral language as you talk with your child or grandchild about what they are doing at school.

Enjoy lots of stories and some rich conversations.

Regional food pantry receives $100K grant

Northern Illinois Food Bank’s work to mitigate hunger in 13 counties in northern Illinois was aided recently by a $100,000 grant from the Jewel-Osco and Jewel-Osco Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors Program.

The program aims to help connect qualified individuals with existing federal meal programs such as SNAP, WIC, P-EBT and free or reduced school nutrition programs.

Northern Illinois Food Bank is directing this funding to support its SNAP outreach team in effectively connecting families with federal programs that can help during times of food insecurity.

“This generous donation from Jewel-Osco Nourishing Neighbors will help Northern Illinois Food Bank address hunger issues in our community by connecting individuals in need with federal programs designed to relieve hunger,” said Melinda Craigs-Ingram, the Food Bank’s SNAP outreach manager.

“We’re grateful that Jewel-Osco is partnering with us to help ensure our neighbors have enough to eat. We encourage anyone with questions about federal programs to call us at 844-600-SNAP or

Food Bank, we know we can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors who are facing food insecurity issues,” said Mike Withers, Jewel-Osco’s president.

Since the principal payments on the new debt are being delayed until 2028, it will limit options for many years in the future due to your debt limit of $28 million.

Oregon School District 220 is not in a position to throw away the valuable asset of DLR. The annual amount of savings we are talking about is only $20 annually per district resident.

A couple of things have been pointed out to me in my conversations with others knowledgeable in these matters. First, in the ‘70s, Oregon High School had about 600 students. This was before all of the mandates for special education, as well as there are considerably more discipline problems today requiring additional space.

There might not be as much room in other buildings for these reasons plus continuing increases in preschool education. The committee is concerned with overcrowding in the high school.

Second, using birth rates for projecting future enrollment is very outdated. When parents have children today in our very mobile society, they don’t worry about quality of schools when the children are born. When their children get ready to start school, they do move to areas with good schools. We are seeing this in our neighborhoods right now.

Some of you say that this will not affect students living in Oregon. Wait until these students and their parents complain about having lunch in the middle of the morning or afternoon or when they are told they have no room for band, chorus or other activities. It is my understanding the home economics program is already gone.

One of the things that Dr. Mahoney has mentioned in his proposal was the amount of staff cuts. I have heard that instead there are plans for staff to be added this year, such as a new director of support services.

The mayors and citizen groups in both Mt. Morris and Oregon have been working hard to attract new businesses to the area.

I hope these are successful. This will not happen if the school district doesn’t have a quality education system that has the flexibility to adapt to changing situations including enrollment growth.

I think the required improvement to DLR can be done along with little, if any, new bond debt.

Optional funding methods from [Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act] money and the fire and safety fund present ways to finance the needed improvements. The citizens and voters of Mt. Morris will be happy with a school, even if it has a few cracks in the parking lot.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank is fa 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and member of Feeding America. It serves Boone, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Will and Winnebago counties. It provides 250,000 meals a day and partners with more than 900 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and youth and senior feeding programs to provide nutritious food and resources.

Distribution centers are located in Geneva, Park City, Rockford and Joliet.

IT’S YOUR WRITE D-220 board should vote ‘no’ on closing David L. Rahn Junior High To the Editor: To the board members and the citizens of Oregon School District 220: The Advisory Committee has presented new information to the Oregon school board that was made available only after the consultant study and the superintendent’s proposal to close [David L. Rahn Junior High School] was finalized.

Most important is the substantial increase in the [equalized assessed values] of the district. These have been verified by the Ogle County tax assessor for the tax year 2021 and show continued increases in future years due to residential properties selling above their assessed values.

Most of the past discussions have been about the operating budget, which has been balanced in recent years. However, I would like to look at the current bond debt.

The debt level will be about $20 million after the recent addition of $11.6 million.

I feel, along with the experts that I have talked to, that this debt can be serviced at the current level of EAV. It would be nice as a taxpayer if debt was $5 million less, as $5 million of the projects on Oregon campus buildings were not required.

With this amount of debt, it does limit options for the future.

You have been given new information.

This information was prepared by people very knowledgeable in the fields and people that have a lot invested in this community. Go with it and call it a win for everyone.

We look forward to hearing from each of you at the Aug. 16 open session and the reason for your vote. The committee has made a compelling argument that Oregon School District 220 is financially sound.

Several other items have been uncovered about why this is a terrible idea. I will ask one last question that I have been asked many times by people in and outside this district: Why is this school board being asked to vote on something that will destroy all the goodwill that has been built over the last 25-plus years?

There is a solution looking at them straight in the face. Spend the extra money left over from the $11.6 million bond for the required improvements to DLR of $400,000.

They could use this and a portion of the $3.3 million CARES Act fund to finish another $1.5 million on DLR and this issue would go away for many years. The board has this power, use it for the good of this school district and the good of our community.

eingles@shawmedia.com The era of Northwest and Upstate, of North and South, has come to an end in the NUIC. After years of being split into divisions, it is all one conference for football, with nine teams left standing in 11-man football after several NUIC members have made the move to the eight-man ranks.

Polo and River Ridge had been playing eight-man. AFC made the move in the spring. Amboy, Milledgeville, Aquin and Orangeville make the move this fall. Warren is still in its co-op with Blackhawk, playing a Wisconsin schedule. Rockford Christian’s brief cameo in the league has ended, with the Royal Lions back in the Big Northern. And West Carroll has opted to play a JV-only schedule this fall.

That leaves the NUIC with newcomer Fulton and eight holdovers: Forreston, Eastland-Pearl City, Stockton, Durand-Pecatonica, Galena, East Dubuque, Lena-Winslow and Dakota.

For Eastland-Pearl City coach Jared McNutt, it does not change the approach. Every week in the NUIC is a big week.

Fulton’s nonconference matchup results in a trip to the St. Louis area to face Madison, a playoff team in 2017 and 2018 that went 1-7 in 2019 and 0-4 in the short spring 2021 season.

For Forreston, nonconference action brings a clash of Class 1A and Class 2A titans with a Week 8 home game against Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.

“Coach [Kyle] Zick, he’s our athletic director, he got online right away and started making phone calls wanting to fill that week,” Forreston coach Kenyon Janicke said. “It just so happened that the only team with an open week that was in our range.”

“We cancelled last year’s festival out of an abundance of caution,” said AOP President Marseyne Snow. “So this year we’re going to celebrate the 50th and we hope people come out to mark this special event.”

Crafts and collectibles, an Olde English Faire, a parade with marching bands and floats, strolling entertainers, and lots of good treats to eat are just some of the usual staples of this year’s festival.

The two-day event has evolved into one of the most popular and largest festivals in northwestern Illinois – and most of its attractions are free.

The heart of the festival is the Farmers Market and Craft Fair that features upward of 180 vendors who sell a variety of arts and crafts ranging from handmade wood items to homemade baked breads.

Booths are set up around the lawn of the historic Ogle County Courthouse and surrounding streets on both Saturday and Sunday.

Ornamental produce, locally produced honey, jewelry, soaps, candles, antiques, seasonal items, and homemade pies are just a few of the hundreds of items that can be found throughout the show.

Visitors to Autumn on Parade can also partake of a variety of scrumptious treats in the Food Court, where local not-for-profit organizations prepare their specialties each year.

On Sunday, Autumn on Parade’s annual Harvest Time parade will march through the streets of Oregon.

The annual event has about 125 entries each year. Entertainment this year includes The Jesse White Tumblers and South Shore Chicago Drill Team.

Marching bands, clowns, queens and local floats also participate in the parade.

Olde English Faire at Stronghold Castle Step back in time to see what life might have been like during the Renaissance.

The Olde English Faire will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The gates close at 4 p.m.

Events include tours of Stronghold Castle, where visitors can explore the Great Hall, the library with a ceiling painted by Russian artist Nicholas

Kasaroff, the Rumpelstiltskin room and, of course, a secret passageway, hidden in one of the rooms.

Faire weekend is the only time that the Castle is open for tours without reservations.

There is an admission fee for this event. Shuttle service is offered from downtown Oregon on Saturday only.

Car Show Focus House, an Ogle County owned youth residential facility operated by the Ogle County Probation Department, will run the Autumn on Parade Car Show on Saturday at Oregon Park East.

This event showcases the rich agriculture heritage in Ogle and other northern Illinois counties.

Visitors will see restored and, sometimes, unrestored farm tractors as well as gas engine exhibits. Owners are invited to register by 9 a.m. Saturday.

Chana School Museum The historic Chana School, also located in Oregon Park East, will be open for tours on Saturday.

The two-room rural schoolhouse was built in nearby Chana in 1883 and moved to Oregon Park East, where it was restored by local volunteers.

The Chana School Museum opened in the fall of 2003. In December 2005, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This unique V-shaped building is not your typical rural schoolhouse.

Inside, visitors will find cloak rooms with curved walls, decorative pressed tin walls and ceilings, and fancy carved woodwork painted in Victorian colors.

Fun Zone This event is located on the riverfront, below the Oregon dam. Bounce houses and other kid-friendly events will all be part of the action.

5k and Fun Run The Autumn on Parade 5k Run and 1-Mile Fun Run will be on Sunday morning.

One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 am followed by the 5K participants at approximately 8:30 a.m.

“The kids are going to have to know they’re going to face some challenges. It’s still just doing the right things. I remember in 2016, my first year back at Forreston, we were in for the long haul because we had EPC, Dakota and Le-Win all in a row and those were tough, close games. The kids have to know that things aren’t impossible, but things are going to be tough.”

EPC opens with a tough game, hosting Lena-Winslow, before a road trip to Stockton and a home date with Forreston.

“It’s better to have Lena early than late,” McNutt said. “They really hit their stride later in the season toward playoff time. Really, I think we have to worry about us.”

Janicke’s first game as head coach will come against Stockton, coached by former West Carroll coach Matt

Leitzen, now in his second season with the Blackhawks.

“We’re familiar with him with his time at West Carroll,” Janicke said.

“We’ve got to just keep doing the things that we’re doing. Our kids worked hard all summer. They were in the weight room. They made that commitment to be there every day.

This week is no-contact week, but when they come back, we’ve got to be ready to go.”

Autumn on Parade 5k, Fun Run set for Oct. 3 OREGON ­— The 16th annual Autumn on Parade 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run is back!

“Spread the word and come join us on Sunday, Oct. 3, for another spectacular run, and then stick around town for the other activities offered by the Autumn on Parade Festival and parade,” said Angie Mahoney, race volunteer.

One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K participants at about 8:30 a.m. Registration for the 1-Mile Fun Run is $10.

“This year, all participants will receive an Autumn on Parade 1-Mile Fun Run participant ribbon. To be guaranteed a shirt, please register no later than Sept. 17,” Mahoney said.

As for the 5K, all the same amenities that race goers have come to love will be available again such as music, premium long-sleeve tech shirts, post-race food, awards to first, second and third in 16 age groups, overall awards, USATF-certified course, and timing by Tri-3 Sports Timing.

A printout of the course can be found at www. autumnonparade.org under the 5K page. Strollers will be allowed on the race course but must start after all runners. No pets, bicycles or scooters allowed on the course.

“Back again this year is the 5K Team Challenge, so grab your co-workers, friends or family and sign up. Teams can be a minimum of four and a maximum of 15 per team. The top four race times for each team are added together and the fastest team wins a first place plaque,” Mahoney said.

He had a life-long, enduring love of flying machines, and he became an instrument-rated private pilot. While in high school, he had dreamt of a career as a concert pianist. To the great relief of his passengers, he was a better pilot than he was a pianist.

His survivors include his children, Elizabeth Wisnosky of Iowa City, and David Wisnosky

of College Park, MD; two granddaughters who live with their mother in Iowa City, Grace Wisnosky and Faye Wisnosky; and 11 cousins.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris, the VFW, the American Legion, and the Vietnam Helicopter Crewmember’s Association.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday August 21, 2021 at 10 a.m. in Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL with Rev. Josh Ehrler officiating. Burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 from 9 a.m.. until service time in Finch Funeral Home.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity Aug. 5 Denny Dal Santo, 55, of Rockford, was arrested for driving with no valid driver’s license after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center. Dal Santo was taken to the Ogle County Jail.

Aug. 6 At approximately 1:34 p.m. deputies responded to the 6000 block of Illinois Route 2. After an investigation, they learned that Gregory Garrett, 60, of Mt. Morris, was traveling southbound in a white Buick passenger car and drove off the east side of the roadway, striking a small tree before the vehicle came to rest. Garrett was transported by Byron EMS to Swedish American Hospital for minor injuries.

Ernest Elswick, 54, of Byron, was arrested at 4:05 p.m. in the 800 block of East Spring Creek Road for aggravated driving while license revoked. Elswick was also cited for expired registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle and was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 7:18 p.m., Ogle County deputies stopped Jerime Kuhlemier, 40, of Oregon, was arrested at 7:18 p.m. in the 6000 block of West Pines Road for aggravat-

ed driving while license revoked. Kuhlemier also was cited for unlawful use of registration, illegal transportation of alcohol, obstructed registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Kuhlemier was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 10:14 p.m., Ogle County deputies and Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS personnel responded to the 14000 block of state Route 72 for a one-vehicle crash with suspected minor injuries. After an investigation, it was determined that Adam Moschel, 55, of Monroe Center, was traveling westbound on Illinois Route 72 and entered the north ditch, striking a telephone pole.

Moschel fled the scene, but was located by the Ogle County K-9 unit and transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor injuries from the crash.

Moschel was issued citations for driving under the influence of alcohol, open container/alcohol, failure to give notice of an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage. He received an I-Bond and was left in the care of Rochelle Community Hospital personnel.

After an investigation, it was determined that a 2007 Harley Davidson operated by Michael Avolio, 53, of North Riverside, was traveling west on state Route 64 behind a 2014 Harley Davidson operated by Dale Detman, 67, of Plainfield, when Detman slowed for a vehicle in traffic.

Avolio struck Detman and lost control, causing the motorcycle to slide on the left side. Avolio and his passenger, Cheryl Serpico, 62, of North Riverside, were transported by Oregon Fire Protection District to KSB Hospital for minor injuries.
