School Supply Drive enters its 18th year With school supplies starting to line the shelves it is time once again for the SSET 4 School Annual School Supply Drive.

This is the 18th year for helping Forrestville Valley students on free/reduced lunch start school with a new backpack and new supplies.

This effort is not possible without phenomenal community support.

“We are once again asking for your help so students can start school with new supplies,” said volunteer Jane Koeller.

Collection boxes are located in German Valley at German American Bank; Leaf River at Bertolet Library; and Forreston at Forreston Public Library and Koeller Forreston Hardware.

All supplies are needed – but the great-

est need is for notebooks, folders, colored pencils, and markers.

The supplies will be distributed on Tuesday, Aug 10 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 405 4th Avenue in Forreston.

“You can find us on Facebook at SSET 4 School.” Koeller said. “As always, this program only succeeds because of the phenomenal community support!”

Ogle County’s third National Night Out is scheduled for Aug. 3, from 5-8 p.m., in BJ Way Park. The park is behind the Byron Fire Department.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Byron Police Department and the Byron Fire Department, VanVickle said. The sheriff’s office has partnered with Oregon law enforcement in the past, but try to move the event

around the county, he said.

Planned activities include: a display of emergency vehicles; K-9 demonstrations; water activities; bounce house and inflatable slide; and food and drink, including a Kona Ice Truck.

“National Night Out is really a community picnic — that’s kind of the philosophy behind it,” VanVickle said. “It allows interaction at a very intimate level with the community and shows the human side of law enforcement.”

Take a twirl on the tilt-a-whirl, watch thrills and spills at the rodeo, and tap a toe to music this weekend at the 167th Ogle County Fair.

The fair kicked off Wednesday with the Ogle County Fair Queen Pageant and is packed with entertainment, activities, and good food through Sunday, Aug. 1 at the fairgrounds on Lime Kiln Road, just north of Ill. 64 a mile west of Oregon.

The Big Hat Rodeo will offer buckin’ broncos, roping, and trick riding on Friday evening, and with the always crowd-pleasing demolition derby on Saturday. Both events will be held in the grandstands.

The fair will wrap up on Sunday with an all-new event. Popular blues and rhythm & blues band The Jimmys will perform a free concert in the grandstands from 1 to 4 p.m.

“Since it’s a new event we’re not planning to charge. We’re going to accept donations since it’s our first time out of the gate with music,” said fair board president Tom Simpson.

The Jimmys, led by keyboardist and organist Jimmy Voegeli, have performed across the Midwest, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean and draw record-setting crowds to the Mt. Morris Jamboree with their annual performances.

With an $8 admission fee, Simpson reminded fair-goers that the event is family-friendly and affordable.

Besides free unlimited carnival rides, the fee also covers ground shows, such as Dan Dan the Farmer Man Comedy Rainmaker Shows and the Wild World of Animals.

Children age 3 and younger get into the fair free but each will need a $4 wristband to ride at the carnival.

Wristbands are available at the gate.

Projects and exhibits will be on display throughout the fair at the 4-H show and adult and junior open shows.

Topics range from traditional livestock, foods, vegetables and fruits, clothing and crafts, floriculture to beekeeping, electricity, woodworking, and computer science.

Other entertainment throughout fair includes the Ta-Da Robots, Chainsaw Carver Dave Ferrell, and the Brian Holt Magic Show with performances on Friday and Saturday.

Musical entertainment at the Lions Shelter will be First Friday on Friday, July 30, and John Lindhorst & Strummers on Saturday, July 31.

Shows are from 7:30 to 10 p.m. each evening.

Dave Weld and The Imperial Flames on Aug. 6 July 30 Lyle Grobe and the Rhythm Ramblers will perform on July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Jamboree in the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell.

“This band, who has appeared during all eight Friday Concert seasons, always has the crowds line-dancing on the grass to toe-tapping while sitting in lawn chairs and on the new benches,” said Jamboree organizer Larry Ubben. “Lyle Grobe has been performing for many years starting in the early 1950s with two brothers, Harry and Richard Hackbarth.”

Aug. 6 Chicago Blues veteran Dave Weld and his band, The Imperial Flames, is on the stage for the Aug. 6 installment of the Mt. Morris Jamboree.

The free concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Warren Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

“Dave Weld, born in Chicago, was first influenced as a child when he found an old Victrola in the basement and wore out the blues 78’s. He moved to New Mexico, and studied guitar under Kurt Black, a jazz player who worked with Benny Carter in New York,” said Jamboree organizer Larry Ubben.

Weld was drawn back to Chicago after hearing Howlin Wolf on the radio and found that he was welcome on the West side of Chicago. He started sitting in at many clubs and landed a gig with Hound Dog Taylor’s band, Brewer Phillips,Ted Harvey, at Sweet Peas on 43rd St.

Weld then moved on to the 1815 Club on W. Roosevelt, which was owned and operated by Eddie Shaw who had Howlin Wolf’s band, the Wolf Pack. Weld was under tutelage from JB Hutto, a Grammy awarded Blues Hall of Fame slide man from Georgia.

“He studied at JB’s house and one day met his nephews Lil’ Ed and James Young (Pookie), and played with them on the west side for ten years.

They collaborated and started the ‘Blues Imperials’,” Ubben said.

Bruce Igauer from renowned Chicago Blues label, Alligator Records found them and recorded them in a historic session “Roughousin’” and they started

doing world tours.

In 1988 Dave decided to start his own band “Dave Weld and the Imperial Flames”. This band featured the most authentic seasoned blues veterans in Chicago.

“Dave Weld and The Imperial Flames, is an authentic, real deal blues band, high energy with versatile talent, variety, and a cohesive show that includes original driving houserockin blues, boogie and Soul,” Ubben said.

Concessions for the evening will be served by Ralfie’s BBQ. “Come enjoy the meal, music and fellowship starting at 6 p.m.,” said Ubben. “It’s opening night for the new show themed, Radical Botanicals at the Encore Art Gallery next door on the first floor of Old Sandstone, open from 6:30-9 p.m.”

Encore’s Artist in Residence, Annie Timmer will also be hosting kids art activities near the Freedom Bell just to the north of the Band Shell during the concert.

“Local small business vendors will often be joining all the activity on the Campus with fresh produce and crafts as well as Grandpa’s Ice Cream truck,” Ubben said.

Attendees are asked to bring a blanket or chair or sit on the new benches in front of the band shell.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Pinecrest Grove Community Center, 500 Evergreen Lane, just 7 blocks south of Illinois 64 and west of McKendrie Street.

azoeller@shawmedia.com The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention changed its masking recommendations Tuesday, saying that masks should be worn by everyone in schools, regardless of their vaccination status.

But the area’s regional superintendent for schools says the pattern in which guidelines have been released make it difficult for school leaders to plan. All schools in Illinois have been directed by the governor to have students attend school in person.

Some area districts have faced vocal opposition from parents and others opposed to masks for students, saying it should be parental choice.

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced it was “fully adopting” those revised guidelines. “While data continues to show the effectiveness of the three COVID-19 vaccines currently authorized in the U.S., including against the Delta variant, we are still seeing the virus rapidly spread among the unvaccinated,” said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the IDPH, in a prepared statement.

Ezike said that the risk is greater for everyone if the spread of the virus is not curtailed. “We know masking can help prevent transmission of COVID-19 and its variants,” she said. “Until more people are vaccinated, we join CDC in recommending everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear a mask indoors in areas of substantial and high transmissions, and in K-12 schools.”

That’s the news that area school districts have been waiting on before finalizing their return-to-learn plans and welcoming back students to fulltime, in-person learning in less than a month.

The IDPH said it would be updating the school FAQ document. Earlier on Monday, it posted an FAQ based on the July 9 CDC recommendations, which included masking for unvaccinated students but not the entire school population.

Regional Superintendent Chris Tennyson, of the Regional Office of Education 47 for Lee, Whiteside and Ogle counties, said the change could be a bit confusing for superintendents and school boards as they go by an IDPH FAQ one day and a different one the next.

“It can be frustrating for superintendents and school boards to plan the year out when things can change so

Another important piece for the districts is to have strong layering protocols in place such as cleaning, sanitizing, social distancing and other measures to keep the risk of potential spread low, Tennyson said.

The districts have a bit more leeway with planning, compared to stricter mitigations that lumped rural areas in the same boat as Chicago and other larger metros, he said.

“I’m glad that we do have some local control at this point,” Tennyson said.

“Our office will continue to work hard with districts to get back to learning and be safe.”

The new recommendations further state that all should wear masks indoors in counties where COVID-19 transmission is substantial or high.

The IDPH considers “substantial transmission” to be in areas were there are 50 to 99 cases per 100,000 population over a seven-day period; “high transmission” is areas with more than 100 cases per 100,000 over the same seven days.

In the surrounding counties, Carroll County is the only one labeled highrisk. Lee, Whiteside and Ogle counties

all fall in the moderate range, which comes before substantial and after low risk.

Kelly Mandrell, Polo Community Unit School District superintendent, and Tom Mahoney, Oregon Community Unit School District superintendent, both said they had not had a chance to review the CDC guidelines as of Tuesday evening.

Polo’s school district is making a recommendation for students and staff to wear masks, Mandrell said in a July 22 letter to families. Masks are mandated on district transportation.

“We’re going to be watching and seeing how our metric numbers go within the school and community and see if there’s a reason we would have to mandate masks,” Mandrell said Tuesday.

“There is very much a chance that it could change by tomorrow, by the following week,” she added. “Week-byweek it can change.”

Mahoney cited essentially the same guidelines that Polo put out — masks are recommended, but not required, except on district transportation.

“The process is always the same — collect all the information, collect any of the feedback we receive, and then based on that, if there’s a need to make a change, make the change and reissue the updated guidance,” he said.

Last Monday, Mahoney said the Oregon School Board was waiting for

further guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health before deciding what the district’s mask policy will be for the upcoming school year.

But parents present at that school board meeting urged school officials to eliminate mask requirements and let parents decide what would be best for their children.

Six of 18 parents present at the meeting spoke out against any mask requirement.

Forrestville Valley School District Superintendent Sheri Smith did not respond prior to the print deadline.

Forreston’s Sauerkraut Days coming Aug. 6-8

azoellner@shawmedia.com Water fights, a watermelon eating contest, and, of course, sauerkraut, will all be part of the 2021 Forreston Sauerkraut Days Aug. 6, through Aug. 8.

The festivities are a combined effort of the Sauerkraut Days Committee and the American Legion Families.

Unless otherwise stated, all events are held in Memorial Park.

Food trucks open at 5 p.m. offering a variety of choices from cheese curds to burgers to ice cream.

Registration for the annual Kraut Days 5K and Cabbage Patch Kids Fun Run in Warnken Park also starts at 5 p.m. The Fun Run starts at 6:30 p.m. followed by the 5K at 8 p.m. Registration forms are available at the Forreston Library and Koeller Forreston Hardware.

Believe in the Children is selling sidewalk squares to be used as paint canvases for Design the Downtown.

Squares can be painted Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Bingo is back this year. The fun starts at 6 p.m. with lots of prizes for all ages. The “Undunk Tank” will be in the Forreston Mutual parking lot.

Beginning at 6 p.m., attendees have the opportunity to get locals wet. On Saturday, the Undunk Tank runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

New this year is the softball throw, taking place on the Forreston Grade School tee-ball fields — challenge your friends to see who can throw the fastest! The contest runs 6-8 p.m.

The Biergarten opens at 6 p.m. At the same time is registration for Trivia Night with Rock Valley Pub Trivia; the cost is $5 per person, with a limit of eight people per team. Trivia contests kick off at 7 p.m. Cash prizes are available.

At 6 p.m., Small Town Souls — a musical duo featuring Forreston’s own Dalton Becker and Liz Gronewold — will perform at the biergarten.

This year’s outdoor movie will be “The Greatest Showman.” The showing will be on the east side of the grade school and will start at approximately 8 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase from the Sauerkraut Days Committee.

Saturday starts bright and early with Breakfast on the Go at 7 a.m.

The Forreston Fireman’s Association is bringing back water fights. The fun starts at 10 a.m. for the kids. At 1 p.m., the “big boys and girls” can go at it with contests between different fire departments.

A blind-draw bags tournament starts at 11 a.m. — registration takes place at 10 a.m. The bags tournament will be held in the biergarten. The Forreston Lion’s Pork Chop Dinner begins at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Park On Sunday, the community breakfast takes place from 8-11 a.m. at the fire station. The community church service will be at 9:30 a.m. in Memorial Park.

The final event of Forreston Sauerkraut Days is the parade. This year’s theme is Bring Back the Fun. The parade starts off at 12:30 p.m. and will travel from Forreston Grade School to Locust Avenue. The reviewing stand will be downtown at the public parking lot.

Log cabins were constructed by Ogle pioneers Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

W

hen the pioneers first arrived in America one of the first things they needed to do was build a house where the family could live.

In areas where there were plenty of trees they would build log cabins. All they needed for tools was an axe and saw.

Most of these cabins were one room where the family would live. They didn’t need nails or spikes to hold the logs together and they could be built fairly quickly.

Once the farm was operating settlers built bigger homes or added on to the original log cabin.

The first task was to clear a plot of land where the cabin could be built. They also needed to clear some space around the cabin where they could plant a garden, build a barn and keep some animals. In order to clear the land they had to cut down trees and remove stumps.

After clearing the land they cut down trees with straight trunks that would make good logs for the cabin. Next they would cut the logs to the right length and then cut notches at each end where the logs would fit together at the corners of the cabin.

(These notches were called British, English cog joints).

They would strip the bark off the logs so the bark would not rot over time. If only one man was building the cabin, then it was usually 6 or 7 feet tall. This was because he could only lift a log so high.

One man working alone could build a cabin in a few weeks. If he had help the walls were taller. Each side of the log cabin was usually 12 or 15 feet long.

Once the walls and roof were completed the cracks between the logs were sealed with mud or clay called daubing or clinking.

If the roof was high enough, the pioneers often built a loft where they could sleep. A flat stone was placed at each corner of the cabin to give the cabin a firm foundation and the doors to the cabins were usually built facing the south to allow the sun to shine into the cabin during the day.

A fireplace was built at one end of the log cabin to keep the family warm during the winter and give them fire for cooking. There were usually one or two windows to let in light.

The early pioneers seldom had glass so they used greased paper or cloth to cover the window.

The settlers didn’t have a lot of furniture when they moved in. They might have a small table, a bed, and a chair or two.

The first settlers in Ogle County included Isaac Chambers and John Ankney, 1830; Samuel Reed, Oliver Kellog, Elkana Bush, and John Bookie, 1831; and John Phelps, 1833.

The Gale family moved to Oregon in 1835 one year before Oregon City was founded and built a cabin.

In 1834 Phelps built a cabin on the farm and put in his first crop. Many of the early settlers built their cabins before their family arrived.

John Deere’s wife was pregnant so she arrived two years later. It’s hard to imagine what these early settlers accomplished.

The week was busy making museum connections COMMENTARY I

knew it was going to be an interesting day when I sat up that morning and I was dizzy.

Comfort Keepers were coming that morning to see how I was doing, I had a call coming from Kari in Alaska, and Linda and I were to meet someone that afternoon from Ogle County Historical Society.

I also have had someone helping me this summer in the museum and she was coming for the day. I simply had too busy a day the day before and must remember, I am not young anymore.

The day before had been Peg Silvius’ graveside services over in Carroll County at South Elkhorn and I had P.E.O. that evening in the park. I must start to pick and choose what I can do. I am still not up to par from the shingles and I am now using a walker which really slows one down.

I felt the message from the minister at South Elkhorn was a good one. Peg had Downs Syndrome and yet it did not slow her life down. She made the most of what had been dealt her and her sunny disposition sent her sailing through life. She was an inspiration to many.

So yesterday, a dizzy me gave instructions to my museum helper. The big box under the card table goes to Aplington House to be placed in the files.

Polo Historical Society Then three boxes of diaries from the cabins at the White Pines could go back to the gift shop at the park. They had been brought in for safe keeping and now they needed to be back in the cabins.

Last Sunday when some of our family had lunch at the Pines, I asked them about the diaries.

They had been wondering where they had gone and now they could be brought back. Everything at the Pines seems just the same as before. Daniel was pleased that his chicken pot pie was just the same as it always had been.

After lunch our family stopped by the Barnacopia for Lyle and Melody Reap’s anniversary. We were all out in Eagle Point for many years. It was good to see people I had not seen for many years.

I am always amazed as I look around the Barnaco-

pia at how lovely it all is and what a lovely place to gather. I still remember working with Gary Bocker on some of the pictures.

My phone call from Alaska was great and Kari and I remembered together her visit here in 2000.

Betty Rogers worked with her as she researched the Rogers’ family. Kari’s ancestors were Joseph and Hannah Rogers.

Also Rebecca Middleton, one of our milliners, was also connected. Linda Gall and I have been pulling out some of that information.

Next week Kari’s son Paul will be in Polo and we are getting prepared for him.

Then Wednesday afternoon Linda and I met with Ogle County Historical Society people and I kept my helper busy. Please look for the scrapbook of Judge Zick’s wife that Bob Zick had sent.

Then look for the file of the Muench family. My helper found out what it is like to spend the whole day at the museum. It was 3:30 p.m. before I got home and I was really tired.

Remember our picnic on Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Henry School. Bring your own table service and a dish to pass.

Meggan Dickson-Grennan, owner of w@sh, was searching for a local charity or foundation to which she could donate.

“In my searching, I found the Maggie & Amos Foundation, which I was familiar with, but I didn’t really realize how far their reach went,” Dickson-Grennan said. “It really caught my attention and I knew that was where I wanted our 2021 donations to go to.”

The Maggie & Amos Foundation was established after the deaths of Margaret Maggie and Amos “Maggie” Rosko-Meyer and her 3-year-old son, Amos Meyer. The pair died in a house fire in Byron on Oct. 19, 2016.

Duane C. Meyer, Rosko-Meyer’s ex-husband and Amos’ father, is charged with their murder and arson. The case is pending in Ogle County court.

together to make her student body feel like they were helping and giving back to the community, I know that brought joy to everybody and I’m happy to be able to contribute.”

Dickson-Grennan said she plans to continue supporting local charities with the 1% revenue donation, rotating the recipient on a yearly basis.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

July 20 Tori Adams, 26, of Freeport, was arrested at 11:56 p.m. for driving while license revoked following a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 72 and Mount Vernon Road. Adams was also cited for having a broken tail light. Adams was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond. A passenger in the vehicle, Johnathon Watkins, 30 of Freeport, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis. Watkins was released on an individual bond.

At 7:12 p.m., deputies and the Lynn-ScottRock Fire Department were dispatched to the 20000 block of E. Illinois Route 64 in rural Esmond for a single unit motorcycle crash with injuries.

Upon arrival to the scene, it was determined a black 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle was driving westbound Illinois 64, before exiting the roadway and overturning in the north ditch. The driver of the motorcycle, Corey D. Kelchner, of Rochelle, was transported by Lynn-ScottRock Ambulance to Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside, in Rockford, for treatment of serious injuries.

Kelchner was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was issued an I-Bond and released.

The accident remains under investigation.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the

Illinois State Police.

July 21 At approximately 4:45 p.m., deputies responded to the report of a domestic disturbance at 5167 N. Blackwood Road.

After investigating the disturbance, Matthew L. Hurst, 36, of Rochelle, was arrested for domestic battery and criminal damage to property. Hurst was transported to the Ogle County Jail, where he was held pending a court appearance in front of a judge.

July 23 At approximately 2:54 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop at Illinois Route 2 and Illinois Route 72. After a brief investigation, Donovan M. Goble, 37, of Rockford, was taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of cannabis (more than 100 grams) a Class 4 Felony and improper container (driver). Goble was transported to the Ogle County Jail. Goble was additionally cited for speeding.

Christena M. Poole, 34, of DeKalb, was arrested at 8:51 p.m. for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop on I-88 at mile marker 77. She was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for DUI. Poole was also issued a citation for an equipment violation.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

July 24 At approximately 10:35 p.m., Deputies were advised of a driving complaint traveling southbound in the 1,000 block S. Illinois Route 2. A short time later, deputies were updated with another driving complaint on the same vehicle traveling back northbound

on Illinois 2. At approximately 10:58 p.m., deputies located the vehicle and driver in the 7,000 Block of N. Alpine Drive. After investigation, Angela Duke, 52, of Byron, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Duke was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 200 block of Main St. in Holcomb for a disturbance. After an investigation, Jennifer K. Nash, 47, of Holcomb, was arrested for domestic battery.

Nash was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Jordan Davidson, 32, of Elgin, was arrested at 7:56 p.m. for driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 18000 block of E. Illinois Route 64. Davidson was also cited for suspended registration and operating a vehicle with no insurance.

Davidson was released from the scene on a signature I-Bond.

Bryce Austin, 21, of Rochelle, arrested at 3:02 p.m. for possession of cannabis with intent to deliver following a traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Grandview Terrace. Austin was also cited for no front registration and no trailer lights.

Austin was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 8:13 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of Illinois Route 64 and S. Rocky Hollow Road for a driving complaint.

The vehicle was eventually located in the 3900 block of W. Illinois Route 64 in rural Mt. Morris and a traffic stop was initiated.

Darren M. Findrick, 47, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (heroin), possession of a

controlled substance (cocaine), and unlawful possession of cannabis as a driver. Findrick was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Deputies were assisted by the Mt. Morris Police Department.

July 25 Seth Rudecki, 19, of Stillman Valley, was arrested at 10:56 p.m. for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container following a traffic stop near the intersection of Hitt St. and Illinois 64 in Mt. Morris.

Rudecki was also cited for speeding and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Rudecki was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 1:34 p.m., deputies investigated an accident on I-39 northbound at the 107.5 mile marker. Brandy Carlson, 42, of Knoxville, struck the rear of a car driven by Richard Broek, 73, of Lake Orion, Michigan, in the rear. Broek’s vehicle then spun out of control and struck the overpass embankment of Lindenwood Road that crosses I-39 at that location.

Broek and his wife Judith Broek, 71, were transported to Swedish American Hospital

by Lynn Scott Rock EMS for minor injuries.

Carlson was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and given a court date to appear.

July 27 Gonzalo Herrera, 25, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended on I-39 near Illinois 64 after being stopped for speeding. Herera was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

A rural Oregon woman was critically injured July 21 when she was struck by a semi truck and trailer on Illinois Route 2 while attempting to cross the road.

Patricia A. Jones, 86, of Oregon, was walking across the state highway from east to west at 3:32 p.m. near her home at 4475 S. Illinois Route 2, when she was struck by a northbound semi, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a press release.

Jones was flown by React Helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Rockford for treatment of serious injuries. As of last Thursday afternoon, Jones was listed in critical condition.

The driver of the semi truck and trailer, Eric H. Rivera, 61, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, was not injured.

The road remained closed for 2 hours as police and accident reconstructionists remained at the scene, between Penn Corner Road and the south parking lot for Castle Rock State Park.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Oregon Fire Department, Oregon Ambulance, Oregon Police Department and the Illinois State Police.

The accident remains under investigation.

July 11 At 3:05 p.m., police responded to a one vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of W. Washington and 6th Streets where a limb from a tree fell on a 2019 Honda driven by Todd R. Bourdage, 53, of Geneva. No citations were issued.

July 12 At 7:23 p.m., police responded to a complaint at Oregon Super Value, 204 N. 4th Street, resulting in the arrest Haylie Stier, 29, Oregon, for criminal trespass to property.

Stier was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

July 14 At 10:57 a.m., police responded to a complaint call at 310 Lover’s Lane, resulting in the arrest of Brody J. Stone, 21, of Arvada, Colorado, on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Timothy J. Parker, 39, of Rock Falls, was also arrested on a Lee County warrant for failure to appear. Both Stone and Parker were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

July 15 Isaac W. Morningstar, 20, of Loves Park, was arrested at 5:46 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. Morningstar was also issued a citation for speeding, 44 mph in a 30 mph

July 17 Jonathon D. Holland, 38, of Byron, was arrested at 12:03 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Holland was also issued citations for speeding, 56 mph in a 40 mph zone, illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver, and possession of an

AMBOY, Ill. — When it comes to a new program at Sauk Valley Community College that will offer students the opportunity to earn free tuition through community service, it’s fitting that the first donation toward that program’s endowment came from a pair of budding young business owners whose products first popped up on their family’s farm when they were still in grade school.

“These are young kids who grow their own popcorn,” Linda Cortez, Sauk’s dean of institutional advancement, said of Natalie and Ethan Pratt of Amboy, who started their own homegrown business, Bubba Bug Popcorn. “They gave to our Impact

Program, so these youth are investing in themselves and their friends.”

Sauk announced plans for the Impact Program earlier this year, with a goal of raising $10 million that would be used to pay for the program that would allow high-schoolers to earn 3 years of tuition and fees at the college through community service, as well as meeting other criteria. The college hopes to launch it as early as spring 2022.

The company has a website, bubbabugpopcorn.com, and sales go until the year’s crop is sold out.

As with the corn and soybeans that their parents and family raise, there are good years and not-so-good years for popcorn.

“It varies from year to year, the last couple years have not been great and it’s been about three years since we’ve had a really good crop,” Natalie said.

Harvest happens later in the fall, usually in October, so the popcorn can have additional drying time on the stalk. After the harvest, Natalie shells the corn, dries it further if needed via a screen and a fan, then cleans, sorts and packages the harvest.

Giving Tuesday happens the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the two major Christmas shopping sprees. It is an opportunity for companies and brands to share their profits with charities.

“Everybody has spent their money on stuff from stores and on Amazon and online shopping, so now it’s time to spend some of your money and donate to something. We found out about it and we hopped on the Giving Tuesday train. We picked part of our profits from our sales on Giving Tuesday and donated to local organizations,” Natalie said.

The first donation was to Teen Turf Youth Center in Amboy.

The donation to the Impact Program at Sauk came about after Natalie and Ethan heard their mom, who was on a steering committee for the new program, talking about the program and how it could benefit local students.

“Bubba Bug Popcorn was proudly the first donor for the Impact Program.

We heard about it from Mom and we thought it was really cool. We’ve been blessed with opportunities, but living in small-town and rural Illinois, we know a lot of kids who probably don’t have those opportunities. So, we thought it was a really good idea to put money toward something that we know our friends will use and that we could use. I think it’s really cool that we got to give to that program,” Natalie said.

Another donation is near and dear to Natalie’s heart. It was the first donation that she chose on her own, as Ethan stepped away from the dayto-day operations of the popcorn business.

“I am in band and choir and I love theater,” said Natalie, who plays the oboe. “Our marching band has gotten bigger and people come to the football games to see the marching band and the pep band and it’s amazing, but we need new uniforms. I did my Giving Tuesday last year and I gave it to the Amboy High School music department for new marching band uniforms,” Natalie said.

Connecting points In addition to being able to helping others, the popcorn business has provided Natalie with opportunities to share her enthusiasm for growing and selling popcorn.

As for Bubba Bug Popcorn’s future, Natalie said she will have to decide what to do with the business. She will be a freshman at Amboy High School this fall and plans to continue to be active in band and choir, as well as sports.

“If I’m going to do it, I know I’m going to have to put in the time and the effort to make it the same as it’s always been and even better and not let it go and become a horrible business just because I decide I want to play softball,” Natalie said.

One of those opportunities came when Natalie was invited to meet First Lady Jill Biden at Sauk on April 19.

“It was amazing. It was like a dream,” Natalie said.

In fact, the invitation left her speechless.

“I had a speech competition the day we learned we were going to go and I forgot my speech. I was halfway through my speech and I blanked — and I knew why. I was thinking about meeting the first lady of the United States and it was incredible,” Natalie said.

Natalie and Katie were in the group photo with the first lady and Natalie shared a socially distanced elbow bump with Miguel Cardona, the U.S. secretary of education.

An Amboy High School alumna and current student trustee on the SVCC board, Abril Vazquez-Tapia, introduced Biden, who talked about the benefits of the College Promise Program and the Impact Program.

“The first lady said hi to me and I said hi to her. It was absolutely incredible,” Natalie said.

Katie joked that she was invited — as Natalie’s guest.

“The atmosphere at Sauk was just so full of excitement, like Christmastime,” Katie said.

EDWIN E. SMITH

Born: July 16, 1925 in Piqua, OH Died: June 25, 2021 in Long Island, NY Edwin E. Smith, 95, longtime Oregon resident, passed away, peacefully, on Friday, June 25, 2021. He died like he lived, with dignity. He was staying with his daughter, Linda Rundlett, on Long Island New York when he passed.

Edwin came from humble beginnings, born in Piqua, Ohio, living with his mother, Edna, and brother Richard. As a young child of divorce, they lived with their grandfather on his farm. This is where Edwin learned the lessons of hard work and the value of a dollar. Working from sunup to sundown taught him one thing: He wasn’t cut out to be a farmer. This knowledge launched him into

MT. MORRIS – David W. Atteberry, age 66, passed away suddenly on July 25, 2021 in KSB Hospital.

David was born on March 12, 1955 in Fairfield, IL, the son of Theodore & Mary (Masterson) Atteberry. He graduated from Oblong High School.

David served in the United States Navy for 7 years. David married Vivian Boone on June 15, 1991 in Mt. Morris, IL. David worked for Sea World and Universal Florida as an electrician, and he was an

higher learning, where he moved to Oregon and attended Oregon Bible College. He married Mary Lou Potts on January 2, 1945, in Richmond, Indiana. They had two children, Eddie and Linda. Early in his career, Edwin’s job took him, his wife Mary Lou and their two small children to California for several years, where they established many lifelong friendships. In 1963, they settled in Oregon, Illinois where he lived for 58 years. Edwin had a long career at E.D. Etnyre & Co., where he began in the machine shop, but after a couple of weeks there, was asked to “come into the office” where they offered him a desk job, accordingly with his kind personality, sharp skills and engineer’s mindset. In the late ‘60s, he secured a million-dollar Army contract for Etnyre’s, for a fleet of trucks, and traveled with Roger Etnyre to St. Louis to sign the paperwork. Edwin set up the first data-processing computer center used at Etnyre’s, and secured a staff who truly enjoyed working for him. After 38 years at Etnyre’s, Edwin retired

and went on to work for UniSys Corporation for several years, traveling to Green Bay, Wisconsin, to work as Tech Support for their computer systems. After the loss of Mary Lou, he married Joan Hall, of Grand Rapids, MI, on October 26, 1991. They shared 20 happy years, and enjoyed traveling, family get-togethers and just being with one another.

Edwin always had a mind for business but raised his family in a loving, humble and purposeful way, never needing to be the center of attention, allowing others around him to shine. In his later years, what made him happiest were visits from family, friends, his iPad, news channel and lift chair. He never asked for a thing, but was always willing to give anything he had to help others.

Edwin is survived by his daughter, Linda (Smith) Rundlett, Wading River, New York; four stepchildren, Ken Hall, Phoenix, AZ, Connie Ramsey, Front Royal, VA, Gail Bratcher, Milan, TN, and Kerry Hall, Rockford,

electrical Inspector for Winnebago County, IL retiring in 2020. David loved his twin grandsons; fishing; playing Xbox; helping others; and he was strong in his faith; but most of all, he loved his time with his family.

David is survived by his wife, Vivian Atteberry, Mt. Morris, IL; children, Jessica (Frank) Rago of Carol Stream, IL and Justin Atteberry of Chicago, IL; grandsons, Lincoln and Lennon Rago of Carol Stream, IL; mother, Mary Coffman of Robinson, IL; brothers, Ted (Susan) Atteberry of Robinson, IL, Clifford (Brenda) Atteberry of Robinson, IL, Jeff (Renee) of Goodlettsville, TN, John (Dianna) Atteberry of Robinson, IL, and Steve (Cara) Atteberry of Flat Rock, IL; sister, Helen (Dan) Tabb of Montgomery, IN; and several nieces and nephews.

David is preceded in death by his father, Theodore Atteberry.

Cremation rites have been accorded with Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL. A celebration of life for David will be held at a later date.
