azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Taxpayers in Ogle County could see a drop of about 1.8 cents per $100 on their property tax bills next year if the proposed county budget is passed Nov. 21.

The Ogle County Board Finance Committee is recommending a property tax rate of 69.4 cents per $100 of equalized assessed value for fiscal 2024. The 2023 rate was 71.2 cents per $100 of EAV. Ogle County’s estimated equalized assessed value – one-third of the value of all the property in the county – rose to $1,971,000,736.

The proposed 2023 property tax levy is $13,687,067. That’s an increase of $478,987 over the amount levied in 2022.

“So the appropriation’s slightly less than last year and a slight increase on the levy,” Finance Committee Chairman Jeff Billeter said during the board’s Oct. 30 budget hearing.

The county’s largest fund is the General Fund, to which the Finance Committee is proposing an appropriation of $18,118,406, which is a 4.2% increase from fiscal 2023. The revenue, which includes $5.15 million of property tax levy, is expected to match the appropriation, Billeter said.

“The total General Fund expense total is $18,118,406, which – not coincidentally – means we’re going to have a balanced budget going into 2024,” Billeter said.

“That was the goal of the committee and it appears that we’ve achieved that.”

Some of the other funds that will receive part of their revenue from prop-

erty tax levy dollars include the County Highway Fund ($1.9 million), IMRF Fund ($1,325,000), Mental Health Fund ($1,060,643), County Bridge Fund ($950,000), Federal Aid Matching Fund ($950,000), Social Security Fund ($900,000), Insurance Premium Levy Fund ($675,000), War Veterans Fund ($336,344), Senior Social Services ($276,000), Co-Operative Extension Fund ($130,000) and the TB Care and Treatment Fund ($34,080).

“There may be some final tweaking of the budget moving forward,” Billeter said.

The Ogle County Board next meets at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 21 on the third floor of the Ogle County Courthouse, 105 S. Fifth St., Oregon.

Judge reserves ruling on motion to dismiss murder charges 3

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A Malta man charged with killing a Mt. Morris woman and her unborn son in November 2020 will have to wait until later this month to learn the fate of a motion to dismiss charges of murder and arson.

John Kopp and Liam Dixon, attorneys for Matthew T. Plote, 36, argued the charges should be dismissed because too much time had passed between the alleged crime and their client’s arrest.

Plote is charged with killing Melissa Lamesch, 27, and her unborn son on Nov. 25, 2020, and then setting fire to her home in Mt. Morris to conceal their deaths. Lamesch’s baby was due Nov. 27, 2020.

Plote is facing four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child and one count each of residential arson, aggravated domestic battery and concealment of a homicidal death.

Lamesch was found about 4:30 p.m.

Nov. 25, 2020, after firefighters responded to 206 S. Hannah Ave., Mt. Morris, where they encountered heavy smoke and blaring smoke detectors. She was found on the kitchen floor and pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving measures. She was a 2011 graduate of Oregon High School and an EMT at Trace Ambu-

Plote has been held at the Ogle County Correctional Center since his March 9, 2022, arrest.

Kopp and Dixon filed a pretrial delay motion in September and on Monday called two witnesses during the twohour hearing in their effort to convince Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe to grant the motion to dismiss.

Ogle County Detective Brian Ketter testified he first talked with Plote the day after the fire and had several other communications with him before his arrest. Ketter said Plote told him he had been at Lamesch’s residence the day of the fire, but she was alive when he left.

“You told him you thought he did this and then it got confrontational,” Dixon said, referring to one of the conversations in 2021.

Ketter said when police initiated an “overhear” with some of Plote’s co-workers, he had not informed them of Lamesch’s or the baby’s death.

“None of the co-workers knew he

was going to be a father and that someone had died,” Ketter testifed.

Under questioning by Dixon, Ketter said on the overhear Plote again said she was alive when he left her house.

Dixon questioned why police didn’t interview anyone else in connection with the incident.

“He [Plote] told you he was over there and she was alive when he left,” Dixon said. “And that was the same with the overhear. You didn’t investigate anyone else. Your focus was on Mr. Plote.”

Under questioning by assistant state’s attorney Heather Kruse, Ketter said police were seeking investigative reports, crime scene data and autopsies from the time of the fire up until Plote’s indictment by a grand jury and subsequent arrest.

Kruse said investigators were seeking and examining surveillance videos, DNA samples including samples from the fetus, Amazon records and other records during the course of the investigation.

“You followed the evidence and spoke to who you needed to,” Kruse asked Ketter. “Yes,” he replied.

John Knapp, a fire investigator hired by the defense, testified that after reviewing reports from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office he could not rule the house fire as an arson. “My conclusion was undetermined,” Knapp said. “I was unable to come up with a cause other than it was undetermined.”

Knapp said he reviewed incident reports earlier this year and was not at the scene. Under questioning by Kopp, Knapp said there was not enough evi-

dence provided to him to determine a cause.

“And how many cases have you testified in that involved a homicide?”

State’s Attorney Mike Rock asked.

“None,” Knapp replied.

Rock said Illinois State Police had assisted the state fire marshal during the investigation in addition to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Ketter said the home had been secured until those examinations had been conducted.

Rock said autopsies had indicated there was blunt force trauma to Lamesch with limited thermal burns.

“There were numerous injuries consistent with blunt force trauma,” Rock said, arguing that Knapp was not a “credible” witness because of his lack of experience in fires with homicidal deaths. He also said State Farm Insurance investigators had examined the home and did not find anything to indicate that the fire was accidental in origin.

Kopp and Dixon argued that the case against Plote should be dismissed because the home should have been secured in order for other investigators to conduct examinations.

“We cannot cross examine their evidence,” Dixon argued. “There was tangible evidence that could have been preserved.”

Kruse said Plote’s due process had not been violated by the length of the investigation and all the charges against him should remain.

Defense to argue for mother’s release in 2021 death of 7-year-old

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – An Ogle County judge will decide this month if a woman accused of killing her 7-year-old son in 2021 should be released from jail as her court case continues.

Sarah Safranek, 36, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery in the suffocation death of her 7-year-old son Nathaniel Burton in February 2021. An autopsy showed the boy also had a ruptured liver.

Safranek, in the Ogle County Correctional Center on $2 million bond since her arrest, appeared in court Oct. 25 with her attorney, Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien.

O’Brien told the court that a written medical review of his client’s mental health had yet to be received but was

Court-appointed expert Jayne Braden, a forensic and clinical psychologist in Sycamore, recently reviewed Safranek’s history of “mental health issues” and is compiling a written report.

Judge John Redington granted the continuance and set the next hearing for

2 p.m. Nov. 8. Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten did not object.

On Monday, O’Brien filed a motion for a pretrial release that asks that Safranek be freed from jail as her case continues.

The motion follows passage of the SAFE-T Act, which was upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court and took effect Sept. 18, that eliminates cash bail. It requires a defendant be released unless the judge rules the defendant is a highly likely flight risk or poses too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

The SAFE-T Act was met with opposition from law enforcement and state’s attorneys across the state, including in Ogle County.

In his motion, O’Brien argued that Safranek is being held only because of her “inability” to post the required 10%, or $200,000, of the $2 million bail.

Other bond conditions such as electronic monitoring, home confinement and prohibitions from contacting “certain parties” are available if she were to be released, he said.

“Defendant further asserts that her pretrial incarceration effectively amounts to pretrial punishment,” according to the motion.

Additionally, the motion argues that Safranek has mental and physical issues that are not being treated properly at the jail, including daily headaches and frequent facial numbness; frequent muscle spasms in her arms and legs; excessive fatigue and weakness; frequent chest pains; frequent pain between her shoulder blades; worsening vision problems, including worsening blurred vision and floaters; worsening balance issues; and worsening

Minnesota visitor is working on cemetery markers

Kathryn Waterbury Shaw arrived last week with a big basket filled with garden produce from their garden in Minnesota. This past week, I have had fun using all those vegetables and fruits in my menu at home.

I have to watch eating too many raw tomatoes but the dish on my counter filled with her cherry tomatoes looked very inviting.

I started out with cherry tomatoes in my salad and I eat quite a bit of it each day, so the cherry tomatoes have gone down considerably. Then she brought me several large tomatoes and as she explained the kind that they grow, I thought to myself cream of tomato soup. I used to make that in Eagle Point when we had a big garden. I had not made it in years.

I make it a little differently and grind up skin and all in my food processor. Then with onion, cloves, cinnamon and a white sauce with milk, it is yummy. I have enjoyed it this week.

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf Next I tackled the apples and made a one-bowl apple cake. I sent some home with Bruce for them and said, “Remember, this is made from cousin Kathryn’s apples from Minnesota.”

I still have left on my counter two squash and I enjoy just looking at them. One is small with green stripes and the other is a very large butternut squash. This will take some figuring out and a large hatchet!

Kathryn married into the Shaw newspaper family and she is here working with old cemetery markers on both sides of the family – stones that need to be cleaned or straightened or reset.

William Waterbury starved in Libby prison and died at the prison

hospital at Belle Isle, Virginia, during the Civil War. He does not even have a stone. He was part of the 7th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry and he went with Zenas Aplington. Kathryn is starting to look at a stone for William.

As we were working with the Waterbury history, Kathryn paused and said, “I wonder what William would have accomplished had he come back to Polo following the Civil War?” The same goes for Zenas Aplington who was killed in Corinth, Mississippi. What would they have done for Polo had they lived?

We worked on organizing the very large Waterbury file. The genealogies are all together, along with stories, obituaries and different histories. Photographs are kept separate, but they too needed to be in better envelope sleeves.

Kathryn will be sending us archival paper to place between photos.

She also brought back the Zenas Aplington manuscript of letters to his

wife. She has transcribed all of those so now they can be online for others to peruse. She is a big help to the Polo Historical Society even if she lives in Minnesota.

It was a good two days of working with her and it was nice having her stay with me.

We also stopped to look at the place where Elizabeth Hamblin had her home. She loved to give out cookies to the kids in the neighborhood. Her stone at the cemetery on the Waterbury plot is tipping a bit and Kathryn is keeping her eye on that. The stone says “Once A Slave.” Elizabeth Hamblin was brought to Polo by Maria Waterbury.

Maria is the one who chopped the whiskey kegs along with Caroline Aplington. That is another story.

Horse thieves were talk of the town in 1902

By OTTO DICK Some information for this article appeared in the Aug. 21, 1902, Ogle County Republican Newspaper.

Among our early settlers and squatters were people who became members of the banditti. They specialized in horse stealing, robbery, burglary, counterfeiting and murder. This group of outlaws were well-organized into a band of criminals extending from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico.

Horse stealing was their principal activity with well-established routes to move the stolen horses from hiding place to hiding place en route to eastern and southern markets.

Some of our early settlers wrote about sleeping in the barn to protect their horses.

Along the highway south of his premises, he noticed wheel marks where it had occurred several turns by the driver, exciting his suspicions that the driver of the rig knew something about his horse. Inquiry in town revealed the fact that a rig from the Dement Livery at Dixon was in Oregon on Saturday evening in charge of a stranger whose personal appearance was that he was not above taking a good horse if opportunity presented.

“A telephone to the Dixon liveryman verified the fact that the rig was in Oregon on Saturday, as well as the fact that the driver brought in a strange horse answering the description of the one lost by Mr. Gale.

“Sheriff Andrew and Mr. Gale left for Dixon at once and recovered the horse and in addition brought in a man who gives his name as James

Bishop, together with a woman who he claims is his wife. Nothing is known of them, only their claims that they were summer resorting along the Rock among the wooded hills and pleasant dales.

“The man owned up to taking the horse but claimed the woman was just as much at fault as he was. The two were brought in Monday evening and given a hearing before Judge Fearer and bound over into the October term of court under bonds of $500 in default of which they will continue to summer in the county jail instead of in the woods along the river. Their only regret is that it forces them to miss the Rochelle fair this week.”

Oregon native, former MLB umpire Larry Young to speak at Nov. 18 event The Those Were the Days presentation for November at the Oregon Depot Museum will feature Larry Young, a 1972 Oregon High School graduate.

The presentation will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. This will be on the third Saturday of the month instead of the last Saturday and at 3 p.m. instead of 10 a.m.

Young umpired Major League Baseball games for 24 years and will be entering his 16th year as a supervisor of umpires.

His umpiring career started at the age of 13 on the sandlots of his hometown of Oregon. He progressed to officiating in the Big Ten and the Alaskan League.

He turned professional in 1978 and after a five-year stint in the minor leagues, he was promoted to the American League in 1985.

When the two leagues combined in 1999, he was promoted to crew chief, a position he held until an injury forced his retirement in 2007.

During his MLB career, he umpired two All-Star games, six division series, three league championships and the 1996 and 2003 World Series.

Young became an umpire supervisor in 2008. He is an adviser to the World

New Volunteer Tribute Bell unveiled at Chana School Museum 5 contact@shawmedia.com

The Chana School Museum Foundation recently installed a tribute bell outside of the 1883 Chana School to honor the hundreds of community volunteers who worked on the school’s restoration project.

The cast iron bell is similar to the original bell hanging in the Chana School Museum bell tower.

“These large school bells were once in the bell towers of most of the 225 one-room schoolhouses located throughout Ogle County before school consolidation closed them down starting in the 1940s and ’50s,” said Mark

The Chana School Museum was restored and is maintained by the all-volunteer Chana School Foundation, which saved the historic school from demolition 25 years ago. The building was moved from its original location in Chana 7 miles to Oregon

Park East in 1998.

After five years of countless hours from hundreds of community volunteers, the building was restored to how it looked in the 1890s and opened to the public in 2003. The Chana School Museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 as the only two-room wooden schoolhouse in Illinois.

The Chana School Museum is located at 201 N. River Road at Oregon Park East and is open for school field trips and unique events. The Oregon Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club plays early rules historic baseball games on the lawn of the museum from May to September.

The Chana School Museum Foundation recently installed a tribute bell outside of the 1883 Chana School to honor the hundreds of community volunteers who worked on the school’s restoration project.

Young is the proud recipient of the National Association of Sports Officials Gold Whistle award for community service. The award was presented in 2002.

Young was integral in helping establish the Village of Progress, a private not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 1969 to meet the training needs of adults with disabilities.

Since 2011, he has served on the VOP board. Since 2000, Young has co-hosted the annual John Herrmann Golf Outing that has raised more than $200,000 for the Village of Progress Foundation.

Young also established his own charitable organization, Larry Young and Friends Charities Inc. Young was named Volunteer of the Year by the Special Olympics of Illinois in 1994.

Young has been married to fellow OHS classmate Joan Schmidt Young for

46 years. The couple have two daughters, Jessica and Darcy, and grandsons Bo and Gus. Young is a pancreatic cancer survivor and an advocate for those fighting the disease. Young is a published author of a children’s book titled “The Ump is a Grump” and proceeds from the book go to UmpsCare Charities.

Veterans Day service in Oregon on Nov. 11 Oregon VFW Post 8739 and Oregon Post 97 American Legion will hold a Veterans Service at the Veterans Memorial at the old Ogle County Courthouse on Monday, Nov. 11.

The service will start at 10:45 a.m. with Post 8739 Commander Brian Beckman speaking.

At 11 a.m., there will be a rifle salute to honor veterans. It will be followed by taps.

At 11:30 p.m., the VFW Post will have a pot luck lunch.

The post will be serving pulled pork, mac and cheese, coffee and lemonade.

“Help us out and bring a dish to pass. God bless all our veterans,” said Robert Coulter, Oregon VFW member.

Beginning Friday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 5, Gretchen Catherwood, a founder of Darkhorse Lodge and former Byron resident, will be walking 100 miles for Darkhorse Lodge and the veterans they serve.

“Wherever you live, we invite you to join us. Our goal is to cover at least 100 miles per state in as many states as possible on the same weekend raising money for Darkhorse Lodge,” she said on the Darkhorse Lodge website.

Participants will be asked to walk the entire distance yourself or break it up into teams.

“If you have four people, each could walk 25 miles,” she said. “A team of 10 can each walk 10 miles and so on. However you divide it is up to your team. If you don’t make it 100 miles, it’s OK. It isn’t the distance that matters, it’s the heart of the team trekking.

“You can all walk together or trek in separate places, even in different states.

Every participant will get pledges ahead of time and collect once the walk is complete. Sponsors may pledge a set amount or an amount per mile in increments of .25. You will set your team’s course, which can be done at a school track, a park district path, sidewalks through town or even on country roads, depending on where you live and where it is most safe. We recommend notifying local authorities and letting EMS know of your planned route.”

At 7:13 p.m., deputies were dispatched to North Illinois 26 and West Coffman Road for a two-vehicle accident with injuries. After an investigation, it was determined a white 2000 Chevrolet Camaro was northbound and had crossed the center line, striking a silver 2022 Acura MDX head on. The occupants of both vehicles were treated and released by Forreston Fire/EMS. The driver of the Camaro, Christopher M.

Forney, 28, of Forreston, was arrested for aggravated driving while under the influence (while license revoked), DUI and driving while license revoked. Forney also was issued citations for improper display of registration, improper lane use, operating a vehicle with an expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving without lights when required. Forney was transported to the Ogle County jail before being released with a notice to appear.

Deputies were assisted on scene by the Forreston Police Department, Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office K-9 and the Forreston Fire Department.

Ebabacha Esale, 31, of Rockford, was arrested at 10:47 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois 251 and Bethel Road. Esale also was issued a citation for driving with a suspended registration and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Oct. 11 About 10:29 a.m., police contacted Jovana V. Danielowski, 33, of Mt. Morris, in the 100 block of West Lincoln Street.

Danielowski was wanted on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a traffic offense. Danielowski was transported to the Ogle County jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

About 12:45 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of South Reynolds for the report of a theft. After an investigation, Aza Dauti, 77, of Sterling, was charged with theft less than $500 and given a

notice to appear.

Oct. 12 Ernest J. Munyon, 32, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 3:30 p.m. on an Ogle County warrant for criminal damage to property after a traffic stop in the 400 block of North Mckendrie Avenue. Munyon was taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Oct. 17 George C. Malone, 44, of Dekalb, was arrested at 11 a.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 100 block of East Route 64. Malone also was issued a citation for operating a vehicle

with a suspended registration. He was transported to the Ogle County jail where he was given a notice to appear.

Oct. 21 About 10:20 p.m., police were sent to the area of the 100 block of South Wesley Avenue for a disturbance. After an investigation, Timothy J. Cox, 64, of Mt. Morris, was issued an ordinance citation for battery. He was released on scene.

Safranek was arrested April 21, 2021, and indicted May 4, 2021. She pleaded not guilty May 6, 2021.

Earlier this year, Redington denied O’Brien’s request to hire additional medical experts for Safranek, despite his argument that she has “a long history as to past mental health care” and that those health issues are “directly connected to her defense.”

The defense filed a motion in March saying Safranek’s right to due process required the appointment of and/or use of one or more experts to review certain discovery materials and/or provide testimony.

Her attorneys asked the court to approve an additional expert to “review and evaluate mental health records” of Safranek, including her condition at the time of the alleged crime.

They argued extensive mental health records were provided by the state and revealed a “substantial history of mental health issues, mental illness and related services.”

O’Brien said he believes the prosecution will present those records – whether directly or indirectly – to prove Safranek committed the alleged crimes and asked Redington to allow another expert to be hired to provide an “independent review on behalf of the defendant and potentially be used as an expert witness.”

In his response to the defense motion, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said an indigent defendant is not entitled to an expert “merely because the expert would be helpful, valuable or important to the defense.”

Redington agreed, saying case law cited in the motion requires any additional hiring of experts be “crucial” to

the client’s defense. He said Safranek already was evaluated by a court-appointed expert, Braden, who looked at her mental health history. He suggested Braden review Safranek’s history again.

On Nov. 3, 2022, Redington ruled Safranek fit to stand trial after reviewing a mental health evaluation requested by the defense.

According to records obtained by Shaw Local News Network in a Freedom of Information Act request, the Department of Children and Family Services visited the Safranek/Burton household about a dozen times over two years, following up on five reports of suspected abuse and neglect.

Each time, DCFS closed the case after finding no indications of parental wrongdoing.

Nathaniel was 4 when the allegations first surfaced.

About 5:33 a.m., Ogle County deputies, with the assistance of the Stillman Valley Fire Department, responded to Meridian and Kishwaukee roads for a report of a one-vehicle accident with injuries. After a brief investigation, it was determined that a Nissan Rogue driven by Florije Zeqiri, 47 of Rockford, failed to negotiate the curve and left the roadway. The vehicle struck an embankment before becoming airborne. Zeqiri and a passenger, Besiana Zeqiri, 19, of Rockford, were taken to Swedish American Hospital for apparent minor injuries. Zeqiri was cited for improper lane use.

Bond reduction denied

After hearing testimony and arguments for the motion to dismiss hearing, Roe denied another defense motion to reduce Plote’s bond from $10 million to $50,000.

During a September hearing, Kopp said the defense was asking to reduce bond because of the passage of the SAFE-T Act. The state filed a response to the defense motion asserting that the motion to dismiss was not warranted or supported by case law.

The Illinois Supreme Court upheld the controversial SAFE-T Act that allows defendants to be released on no-cash bond. Under the new law,

judges still decide whether a defendant is a flight risk or poses too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

On Monday, Kopp argued that Plote is a career firefighter who has resided in DeKalb County his entire life and has strong ties to the community. He told Roe his client has no criminal history or history of violence and has remained in the area while cooperating with law enforcement throughout the investigation, as evidenced by Detective Ketter’s testimony in the motion to dismiss hearing.

Kopp also told the court that Plote’s family had a “substantial” amount they could put toward his release “but not $1 million” – 10% of Plote’s current $10 million bond.

He suggested Plote could be monitored if he were to be released from jail.

Roe disagreed.

“The SAFE-T Act was mentioned in your motion, but you are asking the bond be reduced under the old system,” Roe said. “While this court has heard some evidence throughout these hearings it will not consider changing the bond at this time.”

Roe declined a similar bond reduction request in April 2022, noting that even though a bond report had indicated Plote was “low risk” and had “little or no criminal history,” the nature of the charges weighed heavily in his decision.

FORRESTON – After a 20-7 win over Ottawa Marquette in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs Oct. 27, Forreston coach Keynon Janicke breathed a sigh of relief.

“He told me he was glad he didn’t have to play us again,” Marquette coach Tom Jobst said. “We moved the ball and played great defense.”

Other than a three-and-out on its opening possession, Marquette (7-3) was effective in moving the ball the entire game but turnovers proved costly.

Three times, promising drives were snuffed out by fumbled snaps, something that hadn’t been a problem in the warmer weather of the regular season.

“We didn’t even cause them,” Janicke said. “They were giveaways,” Micah Nelson sealed the win for the Cardinals (8-2) with an interception on Marquette’s final drive to make it a 4-0 edge in turnovers.

“You can’t play like that and expect to win,” Jobst said. “The ball was cold, hard and slipping. But that’s not an excuse. They had the same situation and didn’t fumble.”

The other major drawback came on defense for the Crusaders. On two of Forreston’s touchdowns, Kaleb Sanders and Nelson were stacked up at the line of scrimmage, but broke free and scored on long runs.

“Give their backs credit,” Jobst said. “In the scrum, they’d squat down and find the soft spot.”

On Forreston’s first possession, Sanders sneaked up the middle on a 37-yard score to cap a seven-play, 61-yard drive. Sanders had 97 yards rushing, but finished behind 118 yards

by Owen Mulder and 101 by Nelson.

Surprisingly, it was the first time all season the Cardinals had a 100-yard rusher in any game.

“I don’t care about [not getting 100],” Sanders said. “Maybe I will get it next week. When we get the ball, we don’t stop running.”

Marquette pulled to within 8-7 on a fourth-and-goal pass from Anthony Couch to Pete McGrath. It culminated a 15-play, 65-yard drive that was aided by a Forreston horse-collar penalty on an incomplete pass on third-and-14.

Sam Mitre kicked the extra point.

In an oddity, Mitre was penalized two consecutive times on the ensuing kickoff for not waiting until the whistle was blown to kick. The Cardinals ended up with the ball at Marquette’s 48-yard line after the return.

Marquette came right back in an up tempo attack and a wide-open Mullen almost had a long touchdown reception but the ball fell away from his fingertips. Six plays later, Devin Bratty recovered a fumbled snap for Forreston.

Marquette got the ball back after stopping Mulder on a fourth down at the 16-yard line. A Henry McGrath tackle for loss was the key defensive play of the series for the Crusaders.

Taking over with 3:20 left in the first half, Couch connected with Keaton Davis, Mullen and Payton Gutierrez on long passes to move deep into Forreston territory.

Lineman Zach Shuman, who came up with several key defensive stops for Forreston, recovered another fumbled snap to stop the drive and prevent the Crusaders from tying the game.

“Without a doubt, the determining factor in the game was turnovers,” Marquette running back Jacob Smith said.

Coming out after halftime, it took only two plays for Forreston to up its lead to 20-7. Mulder ran up the gut for 31 yards and Sanders had a 35-yard touchdown on a play identical to Nelson’s score off the scrum.

“Those three running backs have put their time in all four years and are leaders,” Janicke said.

The Crusaders defense made a fourth-down stop to get the ball at the 18-yard line, but once again, it was a fumbled snap that killed a drive with Ethan Bocker recovering.

“We had a bend, but don’t break

defense tonight,” Janicke said.

With 9:23 left in the game, Marquette made its third stop on a Cardinals fourth-down attempt and were on the move again, helped by two 15-yard Forreston penalties. That’s when Nelson intercepted Couch.

“In a two-score game, that was a huge play for us” Janicke said.

Starting with a thrilling 35-34 overtime win over Marquette in 2012, this was Forreston’s fourth straight playoff win over the Crusaders.

“It was a physical game,” Bocker said.

Forreston will travel to LenaWinslow on Saturday, where it will face the top-ranked Panthers in the second round.

FOR SHAW LOCAL PECATONICA – The inability to score twice inside the 10-yard line in the first half and what coach Brock Kundert termed a “mental meltdown” in the third quarter proved to be the demise of Oregon in a 34-0 loss to Durand-Pecatonica in the 3A football playoffs.

“Maybe the moment was too big for us,” Kundert said. “Football is so much about momentum and we missed opportunities. We’ve got to handle adversity better and have leaders step up.”

That was all missing as the Hawks were outexecuted in most stages of the game and surprisingly had problems physically matching up with the Rivermen.

“We didn’t expect that,” Kundert said.

With Logan Weems rushing for 88 yards on 22 carries, Oregon outgained Du-Pec in the first half and trailed only 7-0. Oregon had no answers after that as the Rivermen exploded for four second-half scores, all on drives that began inside Hawks territory.

A 46-yard punt by Drew Williams rolled to the 1-yard line as Oregon chose not to return it. A fumbled handoff on the next play was recovered by Nolan Stadler of Du-Pec. With Oregon looking demoralized, it was Jaylen Noud in for the easy

score and a 14-0 lead.

“After the punt, we told them to get a turnover,” Du-Pec coach Tyler Hoffman said. “That punt changed the game and the floodgates opened.”

Du-Pec forced a three-and-out and a 25-yard punt return gave it possession at the Hawks 45-yard line. Quarterback Cooper Hoffman was cornered on

a fourth-and-1 but escaped for a 24-yard run.

On the next play, it was Noud for another 1-yard touchdown, this time out of the Wildcat. Ahead 22-0, the Rivermen defense continued to help the cause with an interception by Jordan Gassman.

A 24-yard pass from Hoffman to Williams set up a 1-yard score by Hoffman and a 28-0 third-quarter lead.

“We flipped a switch and turned it on in the third quarter,” Hoffman said.

Oregon got a brief spark in the fourth quarter when lineman Quentin Berry jumped in front of Hoffman and snagged an interception. However, Colton Mauer and Jaxon Diedrich chased Hawks quarterback Jack Washburn for a 15-yard loss and Oregon was forced to punt.

A short field led to a 35-yard touchdown pass from Hoffman to Diedrich, with no Hawks defender within five yards of him. Du-Pec’s first score, a 23-yard pass to Williams, also was wide open as its passing attack gave Oregon defenders fits all afternoon.

Let’s recap the first week of football playoff action What did we learn in the first week of the IHSA football playoffs?

The NUIC was impressive in two wins over the BNC. The kingpin of the BNC, Byron, was so dominant against Chicago Noble Hansberry that a running clock was started in the second quarter and the third and fourth quarters were cut to nine minutes.

As a 7-2 team, Rochelle got an absolutely brutal draw against a team loaded with college prospects, losing 45-14.

Meanwhile, in the 5A game opposite them, 4-5 Sterling had the good fortune of drawing No. 1 seed and 9-0 Chicago Payton and whipped them 50-0.

That’s a good place to start, with the question being what is the Chicago Public League doing in the playoffs?

Of the 26 CPL teams in the playoffs, only two of them won games and those were against fellow CPL opponents. In games against non-Chicago Public League teams, they went 0-22 and were outscored 1,079-63.

That’s ridiculous. It had to be like watching a car wreck at Byron on Saturday. What’s the point of even playing the game?

On another note, Byron does not run up scores. Substitutes see more than enough playing time as demonstrated by 20 backs getting varsity

It is also imperative that the starting unit gets sufficient playing time to remain sharp. Just because the other team can’t offer resistance doesn’t mean Byron is obligated to sit out starters after a specific time or score.

The closest any CPL team came to winning was Noble Johnson, losing to Stillman Valley 21-20.

There are 17 high schools in Chicago with the Noble moniker, which basically signifies an open-enrollment charter school. It’s been around a couple of decades and earmarked for minorities and low-income students.

Credit to Noble Johnson for overcoming the odds and giving SV everything it could handle.

I really thought it would have been Oregon matching up with Stillman instead of Durand-Pecatonica. After watching the Hawks against Dixon and Stillman in the regular season, I saw real improvement.

Against Du-Pec, they looked like a different team. Other than their quarterback, Du-Pec wasn’t 34 more points talented than Oregon.

The difference was the Rivermen

have a competitive culture instilled and Oregon still is seeking to develop that type of mental fortitude. It’s tough when that hasn’t been the norm for several years.

Compared with Friday Night Lights, it was a listless atmosphere Saturday at Pec, both before and during the game. I think Oregon would have been more jacked up to play Friday instead of Saturday.

Before putting the season to bed for Oregon, credit to the Hawks for making the playoffs and putting in a lot of work in the offseason. Also, much has been made of the underclassmen, but let’s not forget about a senior class that made valuable contributions.

Another surprising BNC loss was No. 10 Monmouth Roseville taking it to No. 7 North Boone 35-14. But that may speak more to the weakness of the league than anything else.

On a personal note to me, NB defensive coordinator Lenny Doetch is stepping down after coaching both his son and grandsons, the last one being star player Chris Doetch this year.

Little did I know back in 1978 when Lenny and I shared a wild drive together from Kishwaukee College to Champaign to pole vault at the junior college state track and field meet that we would meet again many years later on the sidelines of North

Boone-Oregon football games.

The only thing I remember about our road trip 45 years ago was taking his vehicle to a car wash late at night after ending up in a muddy farm field somewhere in central Illinois. I don’t think either of us had a particularly good meet the next day, but there is something special about a couple of teenagers bonding over an adventuresome road trip.

On Friday, it was a much shorter trip for me, to Forreston, site of the Ottawa Marquette 1A playoff game. In covering three of the four playoff games between these two evenly matched opponents, I’ve come to the conclusion that Forreston wins each time because of superior execution.

On my way to Forreston, I drove by the Polo football field to check out the vibe there. With 20 minutes to kickoff, I didn’t see many fans around.

Was it the cold weather or the fact that Polo was destined to blow out its foe that contributed to the small crowd? There should be a large throng at Milledgeville for the Battle of the Blacktop on Saturday.

Oregon had chances early. A 16-play, 58-yard drive culminated in a missed field-goal attempt by Gavin Morrow in the second quarter. Later in the same quarter, Oregon had another first-and-goal situation, highlighted by an 18-yard run to the 9-yard line by Weems.

After three plays of no gain, Washburn’s fourth-down pass was knocked down by Justin Anderson.

“Those goal line stops and Justin’s knockdown were big,” coach Hoffman said. “We had athletes making plays all over the field.”

Since the merger of Durand and Pecatonica for football, it was Du-Pec’s fifth straight win in the first round and the 8-2 squad looks for win No. 1 in the second round with a trip to Stillman Valley (6-4), a 21-20 winner over Chicago Noble.

Oregon (5-5) closed out its best season in nine years and returns the majority of its lineup and skilled players. It also has a solid sophomore group moving up.

“The future looks bright,” Kundert said.

One of those returners is Weems, who led the BNC in rushing and had 108 yards on 30 carries in Oregon’s Josh Crandall jumps to catch a pass against Durand-Pecatonica on Oct. 28 at Pecatonica High School. the loss.

Every play we were gaining 5 yards it seemed like and that’s a great feeling,” Soltow said. “On that long touchdown, Delo had a great block right off the end and then Landen [Brooks] hooked their end and it popped open. I heard footsteps and felt a kid dive at my legs. I almost tripped, but I made it to the end zone. It felt good going up 40-0 and starting the running clock for the second half.”

Soltow ran for 156 yards before the break and Fernandez added 77 yards on the ground.

None of the Polo starters played in the second half and still the Marcos took up the entire third quarter with a 12-play drive.

West Prairie got a couple of cosmetic touchdowns in the fourth quarter – a 9-yard run by Xavier Hilton and a 2-yard run by Austin Nelson.

Nelson finished with 115 yards on 14 carries and Hilton had 37 yards on 16 rushes. But the Polo defense held the Cyclones to 41 total yards in the first half to help build the insurmountable lead.

“Coach [Ted] Alston told us that the front four was going to win us this game,” Soltow said. “If we had pressure up front, it was going to be huge for our defense – and we had pressure up front the whole time. We looked pretty good up front and those guys won us the game.”

“It feels amazing to come out here and accomplish something like this,” Fernandez said. “They’re a really good team and they’re disciplined and it feels

great to get the win. It’s big to just get us into the playoff mindset, battling the

cold and the elements. You’ve got to ramp it up and we did that tonight.”

POLO – Before Polo’s first-round Illinois 8-Man Football Association playoff game Oct. 27, Marcos coach Ted Alston challenged his players to reach their potential.

The Marcos wasted no time doing that, scoring on all five first-half possessions in a 40-16 win over West Prairie.

“The challenge was to play up to our potential every day, every practice, every game,” senior quarterback Brock Soltow said. “We haven’t hit our top potential yet this season and he told us after our walk-through today that we all need to be more prepared and to be who we are on the field because we have the potential to be what we were last year, playing up to West Central in that semifinal game. We need to show as a team what we can be.”

Soltow had a hand in all 40 points for Polo, rushing for four scores, catching a TD pass from Tyler Merdian and either rushing, throwing or catching all five two-point conversions.

Polo (8-2) set the tone from the start.

The defense forced three-and-outs on two of the first three West Prairie possessions, then Soltow capped a pair of seven-play drives with scoring runs of 7 and 5 yards for a 16-0 lead with less than 11 minutes into the game.

The Marcos’ third drive was started by a 41-yard run by Delo Fernandez, then Soltow ran in from 14 yards for a 24-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.

“It was an amazing start and that was big for us. It set the tone for what was going to happen the rest of the game,” Fernandez said. “Our line did amazing, Every single one of them went all-out and really blocked well.”

The Cyclones (6-4) got their first first down of the game on the next drive, but Polo recovered a fumble after a sack on the next third down and Soltow leaped and reached over a Cyclones defender to reel in a 21-yard touchdown catch on fourth-and-8 about 1 1/2 minutes later.

West Prairie put together a couple of first downs on the next drive, but ended up punting after a Soltow tackle for loss. Soltow then outran the Cyclone defense for a 76-yard TD with 2:37 left in the first half to extend the lead to 40-0 and set up the running clock for the entire second half.

OREGON – Under Liz Green, the Erie-Prophetstown cross country program always has been an environment of caring for one another. That attribute payed dividends as both the boys and girls teams advanced to the IHSA state meet with their efforts at the Class 1A sectional Saturday at Oregon Park West.

“We gave a speech on the bus about the world being full of givers and takers,” Green said. “The message we left them with is be a giver for your team.”

That spiritual message was contagious as every team member, whether competing or not, did all they could to build one another up. One of those was senior Jillian Norman, who was in a boot and couldn’t run because of a potential injury.

“It’s really disappointing for me, but I am so proud and excited for the team,” Norman said.

The boys have qualified for state before, but this is the first time the girls team will be headed to Detweiller Park in Peoria, site of the state meet.

The top six team finishers advanced and E-P made it by the narrowest of margins, defeating Rockford Christian 197-199 for the sixth spot.

“It’s crazy,” Green said. “The girls have worked so hard and deserve this.”

It was freshman Sarah Link leading the way with an eighth-place finish in a time of 20:23. In a close race for first place, Evelyn O’Connor of Seneca beat Emily Downing of Cambridge 19:07 to 19:09.

For Link, the day was even more special as she celebrated her 15th birthday with some of her best friends.

More critically, she passed three runners in the last mile.

“It’s so much fun being here today and it helps having all the support we do,” Link said.

Finishing in 28th was fellow freshman Jessie Deneve (21:34) on the 3-mile Park West course. Other E-P scorers were junior Chloe Slock (22:20), senior Clara Ashdown (23:08) and freshman Alana Little (23:16).

“Alana’s time was the fastest she’s ever run,” Green said. “She was motivated because her grandmother is dying from cancer.”

Perennial power Winnebago, which took a huge loss to graduation, still took the team title with 99 points. Sectional favorite Sherrard did not make it out of the regional. Its No. 1 runner collapsed before finishing and another runner was absent, thus leaving it

For Oregon, two-time state qualifier Ella Danhorn finished 37th. Seventeenth place was the cutoff for individuals not on a qualifying team.

The E-P boys had a bit more breathing room than the girls with 126 points for fifth place, compared with 179 for sixth-place Sterling Newman. Rock Island was odd man out with 189.

In a close battle for first between the usual suspects, it was Rockford Christian with 80, Riverdale 86 and Winnebago 92.

Charlie Link paced E-P with a sixthplace finish out of 152 competitors.

“I’m in shock,” Link said.

“This is my first time going to state since I was in eighth grade.”

E-P went as a team in 2021, but Link was sick. Last year, he missed competing as an individual because of injury.

Gus Schultz and Wyatt Goosens also scored for E-P. The only area individual qualifier was West Carroll sophomore Roscoe Davies, who was 14th in 17:10.

Lucas Schaab (16:59) and Lucas Simpson (17:11) were 11th and 15th for Newman. Joining them as scorers were Wyatt Widolff, Carver Grummert and Zachery DeForest.

“Our No. 6 [DeForest] stepped up for us,” Simpson said.

DeForest played a key role in the Comets advancing.

“With our No. 5 out, I knew it was going to be tighter than what I thought it would have been.” Newman coach Pat Warkins said. “I can’t complain.

Everyone ran well and I’m glad we squeaked in.”

For Newman, it was the 12th time since 2008 that it has qualified for state as a team, a mark that helps perpetuate tradition.

“A lot of it ends up with kids having that expectation,” Warkins said. “They don’t want to be the ones to let it down. There’s a lot of difference going down as a team instead of as individuals.

It’s not the same if you’re the only one there from your team.”

Riverdale was pleased to qualify for state after losing four of its top five runners from the 2022 state runner-up squad.

Sophomore Braedon Bode looks to be the next star runner with a fifth-place time of 16:27.
