Library benefactor thanked at open house Darrell Windle’s donation enabled the rebirth of the Forreston Public Library 20 years ago A very special quest attended the open house on Oct. 23 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Forreston Public Library’s renovation.

Darrell Windle, whose donation enabled the facility’s renovation, was one of the visitors who toured the facility.

“A recent addition to the library is a commemorative plaque honoring Florence and George Windle. They were the parents of Darrell who donated over $100,000 in their memory 20 years ago,” said Kathy Pasch, library board member.

“His donation was the spark that initiated the funding for the expansion and renovation of the library.”

Door prize winners at the open house were: book basket, Erin Schmidt; garden mum, Nola DeVries, Jayne Howald; Farmer’s Family Restaurant gift certificate, Derald DeVries; Mimmo’s gift certificate, Evelyn DeVries; Fields of Green Boutique, Courtney Warren; Otter Creek Craft & Paint, Jayne Howald.

In 1998, the library was bursting at the seams and a book had to be removed for every new one that came in. After a referendum to expand the library failed, Village President Robert Dillavou was contacted by a former Forreston resident about a potential donation.

Windle made an offer of $50,000 to bring the library into the 21st century and if the citizens would match it, he would donate an additional $50,000.

Windle, living in Chicago, graduated from Forreston High School and his parents were lifelong residents who often utilized the library.

Windle asked that the library be named in honor of his parents, Florence and George Windle.

A Fund-Raising Steering Committee was formed and Forreston residents held fundraisers and met the match.

With the start that Windle gave, the library was able to apply for and receive a number of grants including the Live and Learn Grant for $192,231 along with Illinois First program for $50,000 with an additional $25,000.

The total cost of the renovation was estimated at $586,000. The Village of Forreston sold the library the vacant lot directly north for $1 to allow for the addition.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held July 30, 2000 followed by an open house on March 4, 2001.

“He said that, even with the administrator, the county board chairman was extremely busy because of the social aspects of the job that they have to take care of on behalf of the county,” Kenney added.

Ogle County first hired an administrator in June 2006. Jim Mielke held the position through September 2008, when he resigned. Meggon McKinley was hired to replace him in April 2009 at a rate of $80,000 per year; she resigned in January 2011.

The Personnel and Salary Committee held a spe-

cial meeting on Oct. 19 during which members came to a consensus on recommended salary rates for committee chairpersons, committee vice chairpersons and regular county board members.

Committee chairperson: $100 per meeting, plus mileage; Committee vice chairperson: $75 per meeting, plus mileage; Regular committee member: $70 per meeting, plus mileage; No pay for missed meetings.

The mileage rate — which is set by the Internal Revenue Service — is 56 cents per mile.

Kenney’s proposals for county board chairperson and vice chairperson were not discussed because of time constraints and a legal requirement to tie those two salaries to district reapportionment following the 2020 census. Committee members plan to consider the pay rates for those two positions during their next regular meeting, which is scheduled for Nov. 9.

All of the recommendations will be passed on to the Finance Committee, Kenney said. If approved there, they will be sent to the Executive Committee and then to the full county board. “[I am] glad to see everybody in agreement,” Ogle County Board Chairperson John Finfrock told committee members after their discussion. “I have no dog in this show, so I’m happy to see that everybody has come together and figured out what they want to do.”

Finfrock attended the Oct. 19 meeting, but did not participate in the discussion. He regularly attends committee meetings to which he is not assigned.

The Ogle County Health Department also is accepting appointments for the flu vaccine. This can be given at the same time as a COVID-19 booster. Both the regular dose of flu vaccine and the high dose (for those 65 and older) is available.

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — A recommendation to increase Ogle County Board member salaries starting in 2023 might include more than quintupling the chairperson’s pay.

The county board chairperson currently makes at least $4,800 a year — a base of $250 per month, plus $150 per month for up to three meetings and an additional $50 per diem for any subsequent meetings in a month. That rate was set May 15, 2001, according to the Ogle County Board rules of order.

Ogle County Personnel and Salary Committee Chairperson John “Skip” Kenney plans to propose to his committee that the county board chairperson be paid $25,000 per year, plus mileage. For the county board vice chairperson, Kenney’s proposal is $15,000 per year, plus mileage.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index inflation calculator, $4,800 in May 2001 has the same buying power as $7,409.61 in September 2021.

“Believe me, I don’t believe in giving money away,” Kenney said in an Oct. 26 phone interview.

“But I do believe in paying for performance.”

The job of the county board chairperson has changed significantly since 2001, he said. It used to be “very much” part-time, whereas today, it essentially is a full-time position, Kenney said.

“It’s a big business, and there’s an awful lot going on that people have no idea,” he said. “We had an administrator at one time that eased that, back a

Former employee calls for director’s resignation Recreation program manager says she resigned over ‘misconduct and psychological harassment’

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — A former Oregon Park District employee’s claim of a “hostile work environment” and “years of misconduct and psychological harassment” concluded with her call for the resignation or termination of OPD Executive Director Erin Folk.

Amanda Zimmermann said she resigned from her job as OPD’s recreation program manager on Sept.

17 after more than five-and-a-half years because of “ongoing poor leadership and the continued lack of accountability” faced by upper management. The title of the recreation program manager position since has been changed to recreation program coordinator.

During the OPD Board of Commissioners’ Oct. 12 meeting, Zimmermann told her story to commissioners in a 19-minute prerecorded video. She described a stress-filled work environment where she had to walk on eggshells, was subjected to personal attacks and felt the need to pretend that everything was OK in order to protect her job.

“A reasonable person would define that as a hostile working environment,” Zimmermann said directly to board members after the 19-minute video concluded.

Shaw Media was not present at the Oct. 12 board meeting, but obtained from Microsoft OneDrive a copy of a roughly 25-minute video of the meeting with Zimmermann’s prerecorded video statement superimposed over a portion of it. According to the video data, it was uploaded by Zimmermann’s husband, Scott Zimmermann, on Oct. 13. The same video was posted on Facebook by an account using the name “Esby Sihimme.”

Alyssa Barringer, OPD’s administrative services coordinator, countered Zimmermann’s allegations during the meeting. Barringer’s comments were not shown in the 25-minute video. They were obtained

by Shaw Media via a Facebook live video posted by Heidi Zimmermann.

Barringer said, in her experience, OPD has “strong, quality management that is consistently looking to improve the district in various aspects.”

She said department heads, including Folk, “do an impressive job” making decisions for the park district and communicating updates with staff.

“I have never felt like there was a lack of communication, nor have I questioned the decision-making of management,” Barringer said. “With the leadership of a strong management team, I continue to work in a healthy and positive environment.”

A statement from park district commissioners acknowledging the Oct. 12 comments was posted Oct. 21 on the Oregon Park District Facebook page.

The content of the post also was emailed to news media outlets by OPD Superintendent of Recreation Tina Ketter.

The headquarters for the Oregon Park District are located in the Nash Recreation Center at the corner of Madison and S. Fifth streets.

Board President Steve Pennock said on Friday that the statement was composed by Commissioner Scott Stephens.

“We want to assure you that we have heard the comments, we take them seriously, and we are working to review and make changes if deemed necessary,” the statement reads. “In the meanErin Folk time you can be assured that the Oregon Park District will continue to provide the public with the quality parks, facilities, and programs to which you are accustomed.”

Laws regarding personnel information designed to protect current and past employees’ privacy will keep many commissioner discussions and actions regarding employee and personnel policy from public view, according to the statement.

“The only comment I really have to make is, I take the comments and concerns very seriously and look forward to working with the board to address any concerns they may have related to this matter,” Folk said in an Oct. 21 interview.

“They [commissioners] are reviewing it and that’s all I can really say,” she added. “It’s a personnel matter and we can’t go into any other details.”

Folk was present at the Oct. 12 meeting, as was Ketter, who also was called out by Zimmermann.

“We’re always disappointed when an employee leaves the park district, but unfortunately policy prohibits me from commenting any further because it is a personnel matter,” Ketter said in an Oct. 26 interview.

All board members will be involved in an investigation into the allegations, Pennock said. He said board members usually are not involved in personnel decisions, as the only person they hire is the executive director.

When asked the general reaction to Zimmermann’s allegations, Pennock said, “We listened,” and emphasized that Zimmermann was not fired, but resigned.

“She wanted her opportunity to speak to the board. She did; we listened,” he said. “I said, ‘Thank you.’ Those are the only words that I said.”

Gelander, of Chana, echoed Zimmermann’s claim in a letter submitted to the board and read into the record of the Oct. 12 meeting.

“I recently resigned from my position as an extended-time instructor after four years of employment due to a hostile work environment that was created in the absence of my immediate supervisor, Amanda Zimmermann,” Gelander wrote.

Gelander said, upon noticing a problem, she researched who handles personnel complaints at OPD and was disappointed to find all issues are to be discussed with the executive director.

“How do you handle issues that are concerning the executive director?” she wrote. “If an employee or member of the public has a compliant against the executive director, the only person that can address that issue currently is the executive director.

Clearly, you can see why this is an issue.”

The current system for how personnel complaints are handled is flawed, Gelander wrote. She asked the board to immediately revise the policy so concerns can be addressed in a fair and timely manner by an outside party.

“We don’t have a policy in place if someone was complaining about the executive director, and that’s something the board will look into,” Pennock said.

Zimmermann was allowed 21 minutes to speak during the Oct. 12 meeting — far above the usual three-minute public comment time limit — because six other individuals requested their time be ceded to her.

“To be clear via the board’s policy in how I must address them, I have sought information and appropriate remedies to these concerns not just prior to the board meeting, but for many years to my department head, as well as to the executive director,” Zimmermann said before starting the 19-minute video.

In the video, Zimmermann said she was “ecstatic and eager” when she joined the OPD staff in January 2016.

“Each day was thrilling, and I loved meeting and working with absolutely everyone,” she said. “It seemed like such a positive atmosphere.”

Having come from the Northbrook Park District where she managed a staff of more than 100, among other duties, OPD was a lesser workload, Zimmermann said. She said that gave her freedom to be creative with new programming and volunteer more in- and out- of the park district.

In mid-2016, Zimmermann decided to go back to school for her masters in business administration.

“The moment I asked for this approval through the ED [Folk], everything went south,” she said.

“And it went south, fast.

“Overnight, it went from, ‘Amanda can do no wrong and she should be considered for the superintendent of rec job,’ to ‘Amanda can’t do anything right and is, in fact, against the park district,’” Zimmermann said. “It was like I was living a bad dream.”

Zimmermann said, throughout 2017, she was personally attacked, accused of things she hadn’t done, put on the spot during meetings, docked on the smallest errors and had rumors spread about her.

It’s a time period that “absolutely tore me apart,” Zimmermann said.

to quiet down for me,” she said. “However, this horrendous trend of manipulating people and mistreatment continued on. It would simply skip around from one employee to the next, most of which have since resigned.”

All of it stemmed directly from Folk and Ketter, Zimmermann said. The two “manage staff via fear and manipulation,” she said.

Zimmermann said she resigned after returning to chaos following a month away — she had COVID-19 and then was attending an out-of-state wedding. She said her staff were upset, stressed and misguided as a result of Folk and Ketter’s management in her absence.

“I was told multiple times that my staff were out of control,” Zimmermann said. “I started getting what I perceived to be appalling management advice from the superintendent of rec [Ketter]. It was made clear that a repeat of 2017 was beginning again, that I would no longer be able to manage my staff in a way they deserve.”

Zimmermann said she emailed her resignation letter — which was addressed to Ketter — to all park board members, but received no response.

“It’s worth noting too, that I’m not the first former employee that had the courage to be honest and report this,” she said.

“The board falling silent and moving forward like nothing happened is wrong.”

In an Oct. 22 interview, Zimmermann said that it now is a waiting game.

“I want to allow time and a chance for the board of commissioners to make the right choice, whatever that may be,” she said.

A special meeting of the Oregon Park Board of Commissioners was called for Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. The agenda consists of an executive session — which is closed to the public — to discuss a personnel matter. There are no action items on the agenda.

Polo Historical Society is seeing some changes T

he last few weeks and months have been sad for Polo Historical Society.

When we had our summer picnic in August we were missing my husband, Kenneth. It seemed strange not to have him there.

We also that evening said our goodbyes to Ed and Karen Olsen since they were moving to Medford, Oregon to be close to their family. By the next meeting in October, they were gone.

These were people who had spent all of their lives in Polo working for the community in many different ways. This week we have added another one to the list with the death of Lucille Woodin. People remember how she mixed up all the pancake batter when we had our breakfasts a few years ago. She knew just how it should be and Ed and Kenneth cooked them on the grill.

Lucille also made many of the treats with Karen’s help for our meetings

during our fellowship time. One time Lucille and I were sweeping and cleaning up the basement at Aplington House. Lucille swept out what looked like a few leaves. When one leaf started to crawl back in the corner we realized it was a bat. That was an interesting time.

When Kenneth and I moved to Polo, it was Lucille who had the wood floors shinning and the windows all washed in our new home in town.

Ed handled all the framing of pictures in the museum and made frames to hold military jackets and other clothing.

Karen had worked on displays in years past and helped decide where things should go.

These were people who were such an active part of our museum and I think at times how will we get along without them? But at our last meeting we had new faces and new people to go on the board. One felt that night a new surge of enthusiasm.

Recently we got into the museum the Dale Blough Native American collection and there has been a flurry of activity. We had a few things before but now we have the rest of the collection and our minds are whirling as we figure out what goes where.

The main cabinet stills needs to be revamped for the actual arrow heads and I need to get in touch with Joe Bleistein for that part of the collection.

But a display case in the front part of the museum will contain things pertaining to a Native American village and how they lived.

This week we started on that and Lori Nelson Christen came in to help us. She was so excited because as a

girl she would go with Dale as they walked the fields to hunt for artifacts.

They were neighbors and he was showing her what to look for following rain storms as the fields were washed new.

Beth, Linda, Lori, and I had a great time on a history venture as we figured out what tells the story of how they lived. I had a deer skin thrown over a table and as Beth felt it with her hand she said, “It needs to be turned around so when children feel it, the feel of the fur is going in the right direction!” She was right and we changed it.

We also learned the story of “Skookum dolls.” Have you ever heard of this kind of doll? I had not but Joan the doll lady at Byron knew all about them. I will tell you all about those unique dolls next week.

Every year, come November billions of jack-o’-lanterns whose wilting faces are now past their prime need to find a new home.

Tossing pumpkins in the trash bin is the simplest solution, but is not the best for the environment according to Chris Enroth, University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

“In a landfill, pumpkins and other organic materials are buried and rot without oxygen, which creates the potent greenhouse gas methane,” Enroth said.

Instead, give gourds a second life by donating them to a zoo or wildlife rehab center or composting them, either personally or through a municipal drop-off program.

Several well-intentioned posts making the rounds on social media have suggested other options such as leaving pumpkins in fields, woods, or nature preserves to decompose or for wild animals to eat. But there’s more to it than a Tweet can explain.

Forreston has had many memorable moments in its illustrious football history. In a 22-20 win over Lena-Winslow, add “The Drive” to that list.

Trailing 20-16 with 8:13 left in the Oct. 22 game, the Cardinals marched 89 yards and scored as time expired on a 1-yard run by Matthew Beltran.

Converting 3 fourth downs along the way, including the touchdown, the 22-play masterpiece was one of Forreston’s finest works ever.

“That’s one drive I going to remember for a long time,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said in a post-game radio interview. “It’s a confidence booster for the playoffs.”

Le-Win coach Ric Arand who has seen a lot in his 24 years, had this to say: “That’s as impressive of a drive as I’ve ever been around.”

High praise for someone with four state titles and more than 200 wins and who has witnessed the brilliance of the Panther-Cardinal rivalry. Both teams ended up 7-2 and could see each other in the second week of the playoffs at Forreston.

It was quarterback Logan Dyson directing this team down the field with effective ball fakes and a sturdy stable of running backs to rely on, with Jacob Fiorello getting the bulk of the calls.

For Beltran, it was only his fifth carry of the night, but his second touchdown.

Trailing 14-0 on the road, Dyson found Devonte King-Black with a critically important 4-yard touchdown before halftime. A 30-yard pass to Beltran set up the score. In the fourth quarter, a 19-yarder between Dyson and Beltran pulled Forreston to within 20-16.

son and Fiorello. Le-Win came in converting 36 of 42 2-point conversions, but could only muster 1-of-3 against Forreston.

However, the battle-tested Panthers have a knack for big plays and Ethan Fye did that by stripping King-Black and dashing 29 yards for the game’s first touchdown. He followed that up with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Luke Benson for the 14-0 lead.

But, it was Forreston winning the statistical battle. Le-Win was held to 130 yards of total offense, far below their average. Forreston had 256 yards rushing and 54 passing.

“They dominated us on both sides of the ball,” Arand said. “Their defensive ends and linebackers killed us. We couldn’t block anybody. I’m really disappointed. Running should be our strength.”

Up 20-8 in the fourth quarter, the defending 1A state champs looked to be in good shape, but the touchdown scored by King-Black changed momentum.

“We needed one more stop,” Arand said. “We’re not playing as hard as them.”

With that final scoring drive, Forreston left little doubt who was playing hardest.

The Cardinals will host Galena on Friday night in the first round of the 1A playoffs. The Cardinals won 52-20 midway through the season.

After missing out on two games mid season due to Covid and not being tested since a close game with Amboy on Sept. 10, Polo coach Ted Alston wasn’t sure what to expect from his No. 1-ranked team in the regular-season finale with perennial grid power Freeport Aquin.

Any uncertainties Alston had were squashed early in a resounding 38-20 win over the Bulldogs on the Marcos’ home field Oct. 22.

“It’s been a weird season losing weeks four and five due to Covid. It’s tough to keep a team motivated when they’re not playing,” Alston said. “I thought we came motivated. To be honest, we really weren’t sure what to expect tonight.”

Aquin (6-3), which finished spring ball as the top-ranked team in 1A for 11-man ball, never was able to get untracked against a more physical opponent. The Marcos (9-0) set the tone an the opening drive, completely stuffing Aquin’s running game and getting the ball back on a punt at the visitor’s 34-yard line.

It was Soltow making it 16-0 on an 11-yard run early in the second quarter, following a 59-yard drive. That drive was set up by a blocked field goal and return by Tyler Merdian.

Cayden Webster then wisely grabbed the ensuing squib kick on the run and advanced it to the Aquin 18-yard line, giving Polo its third short field of the night. Grenoble added his third TD for the 38th point and all Aquin could manage the rest of the game was a kickoff return for touchdown.

The normally potent Aquin offense was held to 18 yard rushing on 15 attempts, far below its 200-plus yard average.

“I’m extremely happy with our defense,” Alston said. “That’s a talented team. I thought our defensive line played its best game of the year.”

Polo racked up 286 yards rushing and Merdian completed two passes for 53 yards.

The Marcos received the No. 1 seed in the 8-man state playoffs and will face No. 16 seed Sciota West Prairie (4-5) on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m.

treynolds@shawmedia.com ROCK FALLS – There were plenty of hugs all around in the Polo camp at the Rock Falls Regional at Centennial Park on Saturday, as the Marcos qualified for sectionals as a team for the first time in program history.

The seventh-place finish wasn’t entirely unexpected, but seeing those final results still caused sheer jubilation.

“Coach [Tony] Hardin likes to crunch numbers and look at things, so based on what he saw, he thought we’d be right there in seventh, but there were two teams close behind us, and the difference between us and that third team was eight points, so anything could happen,” Bekah Zeigler said. “So he kind of just prepped us for it, told us, ‘The spot is there if you want it,’ so that kind of motivated us, and everybody ran their best race, and everyone is just so happy. It just feels really good considering we couldn’t even run a full team at regionals before.”

Zeigler and Kamryn Stockton finished 31st and 32nd, with Zeigler running a 22:15.82 and Stockton finishing in 22:16.30. Courtney Grobe was 40th (22:50.34), Ramsie Grenoble finished 55th (23:58.12), and Ellia Escobar was 60th (25:38.16) for the Marcos.

“Those games we lost to COVID kind of took a little flow out of the season, but the kids have responded pretty well,” Polo coach Ted Alston said. “It’s definitely always good to be able to play at home, and I feel like we have a definite advantage with our crowd. We’ve played well the last couple of weeks, and we feel good about where we’re at right now.”

When news reached Jones that the Polo girls had qualified for sectionals as a team for the first time in program history, it spurred him on.

“I came across the first mile, and one of the girls came up and said, ‘The girls made it, so you better make it.’ That made me so happy, and at that point I was just going and I wasn’t slowing down. It felt really good,” Jones said. “I’m really happy with the way I ran. I knew I didn’t want to relax during the race, I wanted to stay on top of my game, because this could’ve been the last race of the season.

I just wanted to stay up, give it all I had, and I think I did that and had a great race.”

Many students and fans purchased this year’s themed t-shirt to support the fight against cancer and many others joined in with pink to symbolize the fight against breast cancer.

The Cardinals hosted the Milledgeville Missiles with a 6 p.m. fresh-soph start, followed by the varsity match.

Between games cancer survivors were recognized.

A special recognition was given to Principal Travis Heinz, who is currently in his own battle with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Heinz has been absent from school for the past few weeks, but was warmly welcomed as he was able to attend this special event.

Forreston volleyball players and servant leaders also held a silent auction, 50/50, and a bake sale to raise money for

local families in need due to cancer related illnesses.

In addition, bracelets and t-shirts were sold in support of #teamheinz.

T-shirts sold out quickly, but bracelets are still available by contacting the Forreston High School Office.

Both the JV and Varsity games were Cardinal victories, winning both in two sets.

However, the greatest victory was a total of more than $11,000 raised to support local community members in their fight with cancer.

Forreston High School organizers and team members thank the many people who came out to support “Volley for a Cure” and support our community members in their battles against cancer of all colors.

More excitement with football playoff games looming

A

s I approached Polo’s football field Friday with a large enthusiastic crowd on Senior Night, I thought of how different the scene was a year ago with empty gridirons all over the state. Like closed business, churches, schools and the like, hopefully we never go back to that way of living again.

Also, the more football games I have been to this fall further convinces me that the sport was not meant to be played in the spring. Bring on the playoffs!

Polo caught a huge break with Orangeville and Milledgeville bracketed opposite of them, a reward for being the undefeated No. 1 seed. With the way the Marcos dominated Aquin on both sides of the ball, they appear destined to return trip to Monmouth for the 8-man state championship.

The 8-man is different than the IHSA in that they bracket all teams statewide, while the IHSA 1A-6A are broken down into north and south.

A first-time observer to 2021 Polo football, one thing that stood out to me was the way Polo hustled up to the line coming out of the huddle and promptly got set. That’s a small detail, but demonstrates team discipline and superior conditioning to opponents. The

Being as well-schooled as Polo is has played dividends all year and will continue into the playoffs. Never underestimate good coaching.

Besides the pre-game anticipation of rolling into Polo, there was an added level of excitement upon leaving. The final moments of the Forreston vs Lena-Winslow was on the radio and what a finish it was.

Could we see a rematch in the second week of the playoffs at Forreston?

It sure is lining up that way, as both Le-Win and Forreston are seeded ahead of their first-round opponents and have experience beating them in the past.

Fulton and Ottawa Marquette make that side of the bracket even more interesting.

On the other side of the northern bracket, Peru St. Bede, with victories over Newman (2A) and Erie-Prophetstown (3A), is an intriguing challenger.

No. 1 seed Abingdon has yet to prove it can beat the big boys.

What really stands out in 1A is the absence of an undefeated team. Everyone has one loss or more. For the first time is several years, the state title is up for grabs.

A huge favorite in 2A will be 9-0 Wilmington, who dropped down from 3A. Having made long runs in the 3A playoffs the last 20 years, Wilmington must be licking their chops right now.

Top seed Byron and Elmhurst IC appear headed for a semifinal match up in 3A, with the winner having the best chance for a state title.

The feel-good story in the 3A playoffs is Mendota vs Pec-Durand. In the previous six seasons in the BNC, Mendota never won more than one game.

Pec-Durand is hoping to make a mark in 3A after winning a 1A conference.

Or at least win one game, as the winner of Mendota-P/D would face Elmhurst next, winners of three of the last four state titles in 3A (2) and 4A (1).

Seems unfair for a rural team like P/D to be matched up with such a private suburban powerhouse.

It gets just as daunting in 4A with big dog Joliet Catholic looming over everyone. Joliet leads everyone with 14 state titles and really should be playing in 6A

or 7A. Cross Country Enough about football. How about cross country, where Oregon’s Park West will be the place to be on Saturday, with a total of 42 boys and girls teams competing for the right to go on to state.

The girls race will be a 10am and the boys at 11am. Congratulations are in order for the Polo girls, for making it to the sectionals.

Polo has had cross country before, in fact with the 2006 boys advancing to state, but this is a first for the girls team to make it to the sectional.

Winnebago will win the girls sectional, with Aledo, Rock Falls, Seneca and Sherrard having the best chance to make state. The boys side will be closer with Rockford Christian and Port Byron Riverdale team contending for the top spot.

Freeport Aquin star receiver Ollie Arndt nearly qualified for the x-c sectional as an individual, just missing out by one spot. With the 8-man playoffs and the sectional the same weekend, where would have Arndt’s allegiance lie?

Oregon at Mendota: The Lady Hawks were slated to play Mendota at the 2A Mendota Regional on Wednesday. The regional championship is Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.

Two sentenced for assault on inmate at federal prison Two Thomson inmates have been sentenced to serve at least 8 more years in federal prison after pleading guilty to assaulting another inmate in 2019.

Christopher D. Barrow, 39, was sentenced to 105 months, and Jason Mackenzie, 40, was sentenced to 96 months on Oct. 21 in federal court before U.S. District Court Judge John J. Tharp, Jr. for the assault of another inmate at USP Thomson.

On May 8, 2019, Barrow, Mackenzie, and Bradley Shelton, who is scheduled to be sentenced in March 2022, “punched, kicked, and stomped another inmate about the body and head multiple times causing serious bodily injury to the inmate,” according to a news

release from the United States Attorney Northern District of Illinois.

Both sentences will be served consecutively and will be followed by 3 years of supervised release.

Barrow pleaded guilty to the assault charge on Dec. 22, 2020, and Mackenzie pleaded guilty to the charge on July 6, 2021.

The sentence was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; and Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the FBI. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Vincenza L. Tomlinson.

Convicted felon gets 9 years for shooting gun

A felon from Lost Nation was sentenced to 9 years in prison last week for aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Because of his criminal history, Scott R. Levan, 49, could have faced 6 to 30 years. He must serve 85%, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said in a news release.

Levan fired the gun Sept. 2 near the 7500 bock of South Lost Nation Road.

He was convicted of burglary in Ogle and in Lee counties in 2010 and sentenced to 2 and a half years’ probation in each case, and also in Whiteside County in 2011, when he was sentenced to 4 years’ probation.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Oct. 18 At 3:38 p.m., deputies located a vehicle they were advised had been seen pointing a gun at passing motorists while traveling north on Interstate 39 from mile marker 58.

After an investigation, Joshua Logan, 40, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver and unlawful possession of cannabis improper container. An unloaded cased firearm was located in the vehicle.

Logan was transported to the Ogle County Jail. Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Conservation Police assisted.

The investigation is pending.

Frank Malston, 27, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving on a suspended license after being stopped at 8:17 p.m. by deputies near Penn Corner and Anterior roads for an equipment violation. Malston also was cited for an inoperable registration light and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Malston was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 19 Adelmo A. Garcia-Colindres, 33, of Hoffman Estates, was arrested at 6:12 p.m. for no driver’s license after being stopped in the 3000 block of Illinois Route 2. Garcia-Colindres also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no splash guards. Garcia-Colindres was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 20 Raymond Kasper, 56, of Rockford, was

arrested at 12:27 p.m. for driving while license revoked following a traffic stop at Hemstock Road and Illinois Route 251. He was released on a notice to appear with a court date of Nov. 26 at 9 a.m.

Christopher Camacho, 22, of Creston, was arrested at 11:06 p.m. for driving while license suspended after being stopped in the 7000 block of Illinois Route 2. Camacho also was cited for an inoperable registration light.

Camacho was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Oct. 21 Deputies responded to the 4000 block of Illinois Route 72 at approximately 11:37 p.m. in reference to a disturbance. After an investigation, Cory Ballinger, 48, of Decatur, was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Ballinger was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 22 At approximately 6:15 a.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle crash in the 500 block of East Townline Road. After an investigation, it was determined that a three-axle dump truck driven by Jeffery Pitzer, 57, of Franklin Grove, was traveling west on East Townline Road when he swerved to avoid a deer crossing the roadway. The dump truck entered the north ditch and struck the ditch embankment. The truck went up and over the embankment and came to a stop approximately 200 feet off the roadway. Pitzer was transported to SwedishAmerican Hospital to be treated for injuries. No citations were issued.

Oct. 23 Seth E. Dascher, 28, of Rockford, was

arrested at 12:38 p.m. for no valid driver’s license and unlawful possession of cannabis improper container following a traffic stop at Illinois Route 2 and Kathyrn Road. Dascher was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

While at the jail, he was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance and cited for speeding.

Deputies and Byron Fire Protection District and EMS were dispatched to the 10800 block of Illinois Route 2 at approximately 9:51 p.m. for a single-vehicle rollover crash with injuries. After an investigation, Kelly L. Helfrich, 29, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while license suspended. Helfrich was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. Helfrich also was cited for improper traffic lane usage and transport open container of alcohol. Helfrich was released on a $3,000/10% I-Bond.

Oct. 24 At approximately 12:25 a.m., deputies and Byron Fire Protection District and EMS responded to the 4800 block of Illinois Route 72 for a one-vehicle rollover crash. After an investigation, Tyler Jackson, 34, of Davis Junction, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Jackson also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid accident and released on an I-Bond. Jackson was transported to a local hospital for injuries.

Deputies and Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Protection District were dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover crash on Illinois Route 251 near Holcomb Road. An investigation revealed that a southbound vehicle driven by

Jason Bauser, 36, of Sterling, left the west side of the roadway and overturned. Bauser was transported by ambulance to treatment of what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. Bauser was arrested for driving while under the influence and released on an I-Bond. Bauser also was cited for improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Oct. 25 At 11:59 a.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 72 and Mill Road. After an investigation, deputies learned Samantha Norup, 26, of Byron, was driving a 2015 Dodge Dart east on Illinois Route 72 and failed to give the right-of-way to Jacqueline Dietrich, 60, of Byron, who was driving a 2016 Jeep and turning north onto Mill Road. Dietrich was transported by Byron Fire Protection District to a Rockford hospital for minor injuries. Norup refused medical and received citations for driving without valid insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Norup also was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to pay fines and was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

David Coil, 34, of Ashton, was arrested at 10:52 p.m. for possession of a controlled substance (Tramadol), possession of a controlled substance (morphine) and improper container driver following a traffic stop in the 11000 block of Illinois Route 38.

Coil also was cited for improper tint and expired registration and transported to the Ogle County Jail.
