BidsaredueOct. 5by1p.m.atthe OgleCountyClerk’sOffice,locatedat 105S.FifthSt.,Suite104,inOregon.

“We’llhaveapublicbidopeningon Oct.5inadvanceofthecommitteeand countyboardmeetings nextmonthin October,”Ciesielsaid.“Soitgivesus sometimetoreviewthereceived bids andmakesurethatwe’recomfortable withthelowbid.Hopefullywegetseveralinordertocompare.”

Theoldjailislocatedat107S.Fifth St.inOregon. Itisattachedtothe southsideof theOldOgleCounty Courthouse,abuildinginwhichmany countyofficialshaveoffices.Thenew jailopenedinNovember2020.

Theplantingoffive swampwhiteoaktreesattheOgle CountyCourthouselawn’snorthsideissetfornextspring.

“Thetreeshavebeenpurchased,”saidMarciaHeuer,Ogle CountyBoardmember forDistrict8andSafety Committee chairperson.“TheyarecomingfromQuitno’sNursery.On hisadvice,wearegoingtowaittoplantuntilspringbecause swampwhiteoakarealittlesensitiveaboutwhenthey’re transplanted.”

Swampwhiteoaksneedtohibernatefully,meaningall theirleavesdropoff,beforethey’resuitabletobereplanted, Heuersaid.

Quitno’sNurserysoldthetreestothecountyfor$100each, shesaid.Heuer notedthatthenursery’sownertoldherhe wantedtohelpoutthecountyandwantedhistreesaround thecourthouse.

“Mostofthe[tree]trunksareapproximately4to5inches indiameterandthey’reabout30feettall,”Heuersaid. “They’rebeautiful.I’msohappy.”

Thenhesaid,“Doyouwanttovisit anyoneelse?”Irightawaytoldhim I wantedtovisitmybrother,David,and hiswife,Rebecca,inPaducah,and theirdaughterKatie,husband,Mark, niecesCarolineandClaireacrossthe riverinMetropolis.Sothatwasadded toouritinerary.

Wehadagoodvisitwithmybrother DavidandRebecca.Theyareinanew homeIhadnotseenandIlovedsome ofthenewlightfixturestheyhad pickedout.

Ialwayshavehadaninterestin lightfixturesandIrememberwhen I wentintoAplingtonHouseIfoundthe upstairswithlightbulbs hanging. I foundsomeoldfixturesdowninthe basementontheshelves.

W.L.Taylorwasthefirstcitizenof Oregontoownanautomobilein1902. Twoyearslaterthereweresix reportedcars.

By1909the Republican Newspaper reportedthat“theautomobiletraffic throughOregonSundaywastremendous.”

Duringtheseearlyyears,carswere expensive.Toownonewasashowof prosperity,astatussymbol.

Theautomobilewasaseasonal meansoftransportation.Theautomobileseason was mid-March toearly December.

ManyeventsoccurredduringOregon’sfirst 63yearsbeforecars. PoliticallyduringthistimeperiodOregon hadninemayors.CharlesSchneider wasourmayorfrom1893to1903.

From1818to1900,23governors served whentheIllinoisStatecapitals werelocatedatKaskavia,Vandalia andfinallySpringfield.

FromOregon,ThomasFordwas Illinois’eighthgovernor.

In1856AbrahamLincolnspokein Oregon–44yearsbeforethefirstcar arrived.

State fire marshal looking for cause of Dixon fire

ThestatefiremarshalistryingtodeterminethecauseofafireMondaymorningthat destroyedthedecades-oldAuctionCitybuildingat2505W.FourthSt.inDixon.

SevenfiredepartmentsandCGHAmbulancerespondedtothefire,whichbrokeout about11a.m.Thescenewasclearedsixhours later.

Noonewasinjured,DixonRuralfirefighter MattHeysaid.

OwnerLindaHollingsworth saidTuesday thatherfamily hasnot yetevenbeenableto discusswhattodonext.

“Itwasjustdevastating,” shesaid.“We’re stillinshock.”

Themajorityofthemainbuildingandall ofitscontentsweredestroyed,shesaid.

TheHollingsworthshavebeenprominent auctioneersintheSaukValleyformorethan 50years.
