The seventh annual US National Straw Sculpting Competition opens Friday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. on the Mt. Morris Campus. “Fine Art in Straw”sculptures will be on display for all to enjoy each day through Aug. 28.

The opening weekend includes live evening music on the historic Warren Reckmeyer Bandshell stage. On Friday, the Mt. Morris Jamboree features Howard and The White Boys (blues) and celebrates the 100th anniversary of the bandshell.

The Ogle County Pork Producers will be serving pork chops on the campus from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The stoplights at the intersection of Illinois Routes 2 and 64 in downtown Oregon likely will remain flashing until early September, Oregon City Council members learned Tuesday.

“Since it’s going to be in the next four weeks, IDOT does not want to put in a temporary [control] box due to costs and with the fact that not all the sensors would work anyway,” Oregon Public Works Director Bill Covell said. “So it could cause more of a headache for the public without all the turnlights and stuff working.”

Covell said he’s trying to speed up delivery of the new permanent control box as much as possible.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will not allow additional traffic control signage to be placed at the intersection in the meantime, Covell said.

“I worked with IDOT on trying to get some additional stop signs out or any additional warning devices [and] it is not allowed by IDOT,” he told commissioners. “IDOT will not allow it because there could be confliction with the traffic lights if, for some rea-

son, they came back on.”

Covell said he had a “pretty good conversation” with the IDOT person in charge of traffic operations.

“She shut down the idea completely on allowing stop signs or any other traffic tool out there,” he said.

Commissioner Melanie Cozzi questioned if the city would be at all liable for crashes that occur as a result of the traffic lights not working properly.

“I wouldn’t see how we could be,” Covell replied. “I have it documented really well about my conversation with IDOT. She shut down every idea.”

City Administrator Darin DeHaan agreed with Covell, noting that the requirements for the intersection are written into Illinois state statute.

“So we do not have any liability,” DeHaan said. “In fact, we’re discouraged from putting other traffic control devices there because of the confusing message. [If we posted additional signage], that would give us liability.

“I understand the community’s tired of seeing it flashing, but we’re doing what we’re supposed to, which is having Bill [Covell] keep pushing them to get it done,” he said.

Sauerkraut Days pushes through heat for a good time Rain causes cancellation of Sunday’s parade

azoellner@shawmedia.com Sunday’s weather soured some plans when heavy rains kept the Forreston Sauerkraut Days parade from taking place.

“If the rain was going to come, that was the perfect day to have it, because it was only the parade that got canceled,” Sauerkraut Days Committee Chairperson Jane Koeller said.

Things went “really well” despite the roughly 100-degree temperatures on Saturday and Sunday’s rain, she said. Several inches of rain fell Aug. 7, most of it between 7 and 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

“We can’t ever out-plan Mother Nature,” Koeller said. “So dealing with the heat was just a thing we had to do. But, regardless of the heat, I think everything went well and attendance was good.”

Sauerkraut Days took place Friday to Sunday, Aug. 5-7, with most activities held in or around Memorial Park in Forreston.

Attendance was different than in past years, Koeller said. There were fewer crafters, but more people participated in the Kraut Days 5K Run/Walk and there were more teams signed up for the bags tournament, she said.

“Some were up, some were down,” Koeller said New this year was an information tent, which “really was utilized,” she said. There also was ax throwing hosted by Rustic Ridge Axe Throwing, of Oregon, and an ice cream social, both on Friday. “[The ice cream social] was really well-attended,” Koeller said. “We wanted to serve 100 people, and we served 99. That was a good thing. Who doesn’t love ice cream when it’s hot out?”

Koeller said committee members already have a few new things planned for the 2023 Sauerkraut Days, but wouldn’t reveal details.

“You’ll have to stay tuned,” she said cheerfully.

On the organizational end, things also went well, Koeller noted. New people signed up to join the committee, and volunteers enjoyed showing off the shirts they got for their service.

“We’re just glad we can do this for the community and are happy when we see them come out and support it also,” Koeller said.

No injuries in Monday morning incident

It took less than an hour for a flash flood to rip through Richie Boyden’s property on Monday leaving a ravine of destruction in its wake.

“I never saw anything like it before,” said Boyden who has lived at 5130 S. Illinois Route 2 for 30 years. “The water was running on both sides and through the garage like a river.”

Boyden and his son Richard recounted on Tuesday how the floodwaters rose and sped across the property on Monday morning.

“It started about 9 a.m.,” said Richard who lives nearby. “Probably within an hour it did all this damage.”

That ‘damage’ included whisking away tons of soil and Richie’s 500-gallon propane tank and leaving a 6-foot deep ravine.

“My LP tank is laying down in the bottom,” Richie said referring to the

Annabelle’s jewelry collection makes quite the display

W

hen we started going through all of Annabelle’s jewelry as we were getting ready for a garage sale, it was an enormous job. It was quite a good size box and all just piled in.

Someone said, “Take it all to Goodwill.” But Jan Schryver offered to take it home and separate the entire works.

This was around in 2011 or 2012.

Later when it was all placed out on the tables, it made quite a display. People purchased the newer pieces and much of the Avon. I bought the older vintage type jewelry and have had it for a number of years.

Some I actually even wore until I realized it was quite fragile and needed to be put away.

When Annabelle had gone to the Polo Rehab Center to live, she had taken with her all she could carry and this again was a big box of jewelry, dolls, and a child’s chair.

We spent more time talking about her dolls and the history of Polo. We never talked about her love of jewelry or where she had gotten some of it.

When she died in 2018, her cousin from Roscoe was handling all of her last wishes and property. Again all of the things came to Polo Historical Society. The Muench family did not want anything.

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf I spent hours going through all the jewelry. The nursing home had said they would take any and use it as prizes for bingo. So many necklaces, in little plastic bags, went to be used as prizes. These were not expensive pieces. They were many colorful necklaces.

But in among all the cheaper pieces were some very nice pieces of jewelry that had not been purchased by Annabelle but had been passed down in her family. They needed to go back to the Shriner family. But we got into Covid, I got shingles, and had knee replacement. Finally just a couple of weeks ago I accomplished getting those boxes where they needed to be.

Lately as I have been putting together the life of the Muench family, someone suggested putting together a display of jewelry of Annabelle’s. I immediately thought of the old jewelry that I had purchased.

What was I going to do with it? It was part of Annabelle’s life.

This week I took it to the museum and Linda and I started going through it. We also have a case someone gave us that is a flat box type case. This would work perfectly. But what is the best way to show off some vintage jewelry?

We attempted to use black paper but that we did not like. Then we put it against white fabric and we like the look of that. Should we use acid free fabric? The next time I go to the museum I will pull out the book, “Sav-

ing It”. What do they suggest?

Saving the history of Polo is not an easy thing and one wants to do it the correct way. This may take a while as we ponder many ideas. But for now we all happen to be enjoying just looking at what Annabelle had purchased in the 1950s and the 1960s.

Many memories are buried in our county cemeteries

BY OTTO DICK There are approximately 88 cemeteries and graveyards located in Ogle County.

There are several small family grave yards where the stones were removed and are now farmland.

Marilyn and I are currently driving to each cemetery and photographing the cemeteries, not each stone. Many of these cemeteries were located by country churches. Some cemeteries had the bodies and head stones removed to another cemetery.

There is a wonderful record of Ogle Cemeteries located at the Ogle County Historical Society. Cathy and Dr. Stauffer, and Chris Gilbert created this history and compiled many grave stone photographs.

I asked Chris Gilbert how many gravesites are in Ogle County. Her estimate from Find a Grave was approximately 58,000.

In 1971 the 75 gravestones were removed from the Ogle County Poor Farm Cemetery located south of Oregon. They were piled near one of the buildings at the County Highway

Department. The fence around the cemetery was removed.

Due to the efforts of Glenn James and a newspaper article, the gravestones were returned . There was no way to determine the exact spot from which each stone was taken, so they were placed in four rows flush with the ground to facilitate mowing.

An easement was provided from the northeast corner of the highway building grounds to the cemetery.

Woosung and Taylor Townships, which are two of Ogle County’s six ½ townships, contain no cemeteries. It’s interesting that in the Bicentennial History of Ogle County, 1976 it stated there are no cemeteries in Woosung township, everyone is alive.

The Coffman Family Cemetery is a very well kept family burial ground located on the bluffs on the north side of Coffman Road in Maryland Township. The first burials were in 1860 when six children died during a three week period due to a diptheria epidemic. One of these children, Charles, expressed a desire to be buried on the bluff. This cemetery contains 38 graves.

Phelps. His Scotch Granite impressive monument located at the top of the cemetery overlooks the other gravesites at Riverview.

This cemetery is Oregon’s history.

John Phelps died April 1, 1874, three years after the C & I Railroad passed through Oregon and 26 years before the first car passed through Oregon.

While visiting a cemetery in Leaf River Township a gentleman pulled up and stopped at a gravesite. He said his relatives were buried there and he periodically visited and talked to them.

That reminded me of the many days that I sat sitting on my folks’ tombstone with tears in my eyes thinking about our family.

When we visit our Ogle County Cemeteries there are many, many memories buried in our cemeteries.

Just remember each one of us is a product of what we inherited from and through our folks and each and every one of our daily life experiences.

Chicago Blues Band, Howard and the White Boys return to the Jamboree on Aug. 12 from 7-9 p.m. in Mt. Morris.

“Howard and the White Boys are considered one of Chicago’s finest live blues acts of the last two decades,” said Larry Ubben, Jamboree organizer.

Howard & the White Boys began jamming together just for fun, but their fast-growing popularity soon convinced them they could make a career of it, Ubben said.

“After only a few months, they got their first big break by opening for B.B. King. Their reputation grew in Chicago and they began performing with the biggest names in blues: Koko Taylor, Otis Rush, Albert King, Junior Wells, Lonnie Brooks, Luther Allison, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry,” Ubben said.

The group made two highly acclaimed recordings, ‘Strung Out On The Blues’ and ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?’, for Los Angeles based Mighty Tiger Records.

“They began traveling extensively across the United States and their growing popularity captured the attention of Philadelphia based Evidence Records. ‘The Big $core’ was the first of three successful discs released

by Evidence, and the band wasted no time in promoting it via many trips to Europe. Evidence released two more well-received HWB discs, ‘Live at

Howard and the White Boy Chord On Blues,’ and ‘Made in Chicago,’ which showcased the group’s versatility and encompassed the funk, R & B, and rock styles that have become Howard & the White Boys trademark,” Ubben said.

Howard and the White Boys are: Howard McCullum - bass, vocals, Rocco Calipari - guitar, Pete Galanis guitar and Jim Christopulos - drums.

“This will be a special night on the Campus as we celebrate our bandshell’s 100th birthday with a presentation of the history of bandshells in Mt. Morris just before the concert. The beginning of our annual Straw Sculpting Competition occurs that evening as well, with many sculptures displayed on the Campus,” Ubben said.

Concessions for the events are courtesy of the Village of Mt. Morris, serving pork chop sandwiches, water and cake starting at 6:30 p.m.

World War II museum open for Heritage Festival in Rochelle on Aug. 20 The Roberts Armory World War II Museum will be open from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, as part of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Festival in Rochelle.

The museum displays artifacts from WWII, specializing in the history of the 70th Tank Battalion, 10th Mountain Division of WWII as well as local veterans from WWII. The museum is only open three

Dirty Fishnet Stockings Dirty Fishnet Stockings, Aug. 19 The local Rockabilly band, Dirty Fishnet Stockings, return to Jamboree on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.

“DFS first started as a group that was to be a Rockabilly Christmas band called ‘Ted & The Mistletones.’ The idea exploded into something much

bigger, wanting to take the band further than playing just the holidays,” said Ubben. “A setlist of 10 was made, then 20 and so on, now they play over 50 songs every show for you to swing to all night long!”

The band is made up lead singer, Ted O’Donnell, Harry Euhus on lead guitar and vocals, Rick Nolting on upright bass and vocals and Bill Englund on drums.

DFS was proud to be inducted into the Rockford Area Music Industry’s Hall of Fame.

“This high energy band brings a show of rousing favorites from the 50s, 60s and more. Always a good time, make sure you don’t miss this event,” said Ubben.

bottom of the large ravine. “The neighbors could smell the propane coming from it.”

At 9:44 a.m., the Oregon Fire Protection District responded to a report of a propane tank on the verge of falling into a sinkhole.

“It [the propane tank] was in the sinkhole by the time we got there,” said Oregon Fire Chief Mike Knoup.

When firefighters arrived, there was swift water approximately 40 feet wide going across the driveway, Knoup said. Firefighters were unsure if the sinkhole had taken out the driveway. They also were concerned about making sure Richie was able to exit the home. He was evacuated through a neighboring property.

Oregon’s swift water team – firefighters trained to swim in Class 4 rapids and to rescue victims from fast-moving water – then entered the flooded area where the propane tank line was located, Knoup said. The line had broken off and was leaking propane, so they had to shut it off, he said.

Richie said the water receded by evening, but now the task of assessing the damage and dealing with the insurance company has begun.

“We’ve been trying to work with the insurance company,” said Richard. “All the water runoff came from the farm fields.”

On Tuesday, there was less than 2 feet of water in the small waterway that runs just west of Richie’s garage.

Bent grasses, shrubs, mud and small trees could be seen alongside where the floodwaters traveled.

Monday’s flash flooding was caused by 9 to 12 inches of rain that fell across northwestern Illinois during a 48-hour period.

Illinois 73 just north of Pearl City remained closed in Stephenson County after floodwaters covered the state highway just north of the downtown area.

Pine Creek rose from its banks Monday causing officials at White Pines State Park to close off access to the park between the first and second fords. Access to the White Pines Lodge, which is located on higher ground, remained open.

The main entrance at Castle Rock State Park remain closed due to floodwaters damage. The boat launch facility, overlook area, and south end trails remain open.

“Flood damage has made the small bridge/culvert on the main entrance road unsafe for traffic. Repairs are being coordinated,” posted Quentin Snook, site technician with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Knoup said the incident at the Boyden property was the only flooding to which the fire district responded Monday. However, firefighters also responded to a downed tree on River Road and provided mutual aid for a house fire – possibly caused by a lightning strike – in Stillman Valley, he said.

“We urge extreme caution in flash flooding,” Knoup said. “People don’t understand the power of moving water.”

Knoup said people should not walk or drive through flooded areas. People also should keep an eye on their surroundings, especially if small creeks

or waterways are nearby, because their water levels can rise quickly, he said.

Rock River water levels continued to rise on Tuesday as tributaries carrying the heavy rains fed into the

river. On Tuesday morning, the Lee County Sheriff’s department reported that the buoy line marking the Dixon dam location had been broken and urged boaters to “please use caution”.

Final day of 2022 fair featured one event, all others canceled following morning storms

azoellner@shawmedia.com Despite a weekend of intense heat and a strong storm, Ogle County Fair organizers are “well pleased.”

The bar for attendance was high when compared to last year’s event, when COVID19 restrictions were starting to loosen, said Tom Simpson, Ogle County Fair president.

“I’m guessing we had about 17,000 people come in the four days we were open,” he said. “That’s right in the average [attendance for four days], but on the upper end.”

The 2022 Ogle County Fair ran Aug. 3-7, although all but one of Sunday’s events — the 9 a.m. Junior Goat Show — were canceled because of heavy rain. About 2.5 inches of rain fell Sunday, most of it between 7 and 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

It forced fair organizers to cancel the 1 p.m. Tri-County Pullers grandstand event, and talks with the carnival folks led to that also being canceled, Simpson said. In the end, the decision to shut down the entire fair was made, he said.

The closure did impact the fair association’s income, Simpson said. He did not have numbers.

“Obviously, it’s our last day. It gives people one last chance to come and enjoy the fair, and that was a missed opportunity for us,” he said.

Saturday, Aug. 6, saw temperatures in the 90s, with heat indexes as high as 107 degrees, according to the NWS. “I believe it [the heat] turned away a few people because it was just so extremely hot,” Simpson said. “But we still had people come out and enjoy themselves at the fair.”

The “Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean” high-wire act and the “Wolves of the World” show both received great reviews, he said.

There also was a huge turnout for the rodeo, Simpson said. It always has been popular, but seemed to be even more so this year compared to the truck pulls, tractor pulls and demolition derby.

“We had excellent volunteers that helped get people in and out of the fairgrounds, as well as coming through the gates,” Simpson said. “We’re always looking for volunteers every year during fair week, as well as off fair week weekends, because the fair grounds still need to be kept up — mowing and trimming and stuff.”

Renee Gehrke chosen as 2022 Miss Ogle County Agriculture roots run deep for Byron native

ehinton@shawmedia.com As a former 4-H’er and member of a farm family, Renee Gehrke is very comfortable in the friendly confines of the Ogle County Fairgrounds.

And that comfort level came through loud and clear to the judges Aug. 3 when the 19-year-old from Byron, was crowned 2022 Miss Ogle County.

Gehrke, whose family operates a cattle farm near Byron, was chosen from a field of six in the Wednesday night contest.

“I am just so excited right now. I am in disbelief,” she said after being crowned. “I am so excited for this whole entire year to serve Ogle County and really represent what we are about.”

Agriculture has been an integral part of Gehrke’s life with her family owning and operating Gehrke Family Farms.

“I am super proud of that. We run it together as a family,” she said. “I have showed cattle all throughout the years.

I didn’t bring any to the fair this year, but it is still one of my huge passions.”

Gehrke attended Highland Community College and was an intern with the Ag in the Classroom program this summer. She will attend Iowa State University this fall to pursue a career in the ag industry.

“I hope to be giving back to my community and the organizations that have made me who I am today such as 4-H, FFA and so many more,” she said in her contest bio. “I want to help younger members of our society become future agriculturalists and inspire them to chase their dreams.”

Gehrke rolled the dice when she purchased her evening gown online just one month before the pageant.

“I got it off the internet and I couldn’t return it,” she said laughing.

“It ended up fitting perfectly. Huge gamble but worth the risk.”

Haylee King, 20, of Byron was first runner-up and Brooke Titov, 20, was Miss Congeniality.

Outgoing 2021 Miss Ogle County Emma Thurow of Davis Junction passed the queen title to Gehrke after giving a long, tearful goodbye to the audience.

“It has been an honor to be your queen,” she told the crowd. “The Ogle County Fair and fair pageant have

Thurow was named Young Miss Ogle County in 2015 and Junior Miss Ogle County in 2017, before becoming Miss Ogle County in 2021.

The pageant mimics the Miss Illinois Queen Pageant where the 2022 Miss Ogle County will compete for the title of Miss Illinois County Fair Queen.

The “Queen” is judged on the following: personal interview with the judges; 1-minute speech; physical fitness; on-stage questions; and evening gown stage performance.

The announcement was the last contest of the evening.

Little Mr. and Little Miss were the first winners announced with Little Miss going to Aniyah MacMaster, 8, of Monroe Center and Little Mr. to Brycen Legue.

Leaf River driver brings home first place in compact division

ehinton@shawmedia.com What was James Green’s recipe for a $1,200 payday in the Open Wire Compact Division at the Ogle County Fair’s demolition derby?

Start with a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, tear it down, sprinkle in some spare parts, mix in 15 hours of elbow grease and then top it with some seasoned backing skills.

That’s what worked for the Leaf River resident on Aug. 6 when his compact was the last one running during a hot and steamy night at the Harlan Holm Memorial Track.

“I needed a car and a buddy had this for $400,” said Green after winning his division before a packed crowd. “I’ve been running demo cars for 8 years. This is my first win.”

Green started creating his demo ride about a week ago. “I started working on it last weekend, a couple of hours each night after work. I think it took me between 10-15 hours to get it ready.”

Readying a demo car includes taking off parts like the fuel tank, reinforcing certain areas, and adding parts like agricultural tires for better tracking in dirt, and or mud.

“I started competing in 2014 so I had a lot of parts already for this car,” he said.

Green navigated his little blue Vibe through a sea of battered competitors and ended the heat with a nifty reverse pattern to win the title. The car survived the race so well that Green plans to enter it in the Winnebago County Fair’s demolition derby later this month.

“This is the most fun car I’ve ever built.

There’s a lot of life left in this car,” he said smiling.

Nathan Meeker, an Oregon driver, also had fun in his division for full size vehicles.

The 2022 race marked his return to the track after a hiatus.

“I took 4-5 years off because I had two sets of twins within 18 months,” he said after finishing second in his 1972 Buick LeSabre. “I even used the car for the gender reveal for our first set of twins. I blew blue smoke out of one exhaust and pink out of another.”

He bought his LeSabre in Nebraska several years ago and started driving in demolition derbies in 1996.

“It was a good time out there tonight and I had a real good time,” he said.

Chris Cadie of Chana also finished first in the pickup/suv division.

The Ogle County demolition derby was run by Robbo’s Extreme Derby Promotions.

Fiery ride for one contestant at fair’s tractor pull

ehinton@shawmedia.com A blown fuel line made for a fiery ride for one of the drivers in the Illini State Pullers tractor pull competition at the Ogle County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 4.

Mark Kelsey of Davis had a pretty good run going in his International diesel super stock, “ Just Add Dirt” until a fuel line burst.

The large red and white tractor was fanned with flames as the diesel fuel ignited three-quarters through its run. Kelsey’s protective suit kept him from being injured as he pulled the tractor to a stop and the fire was extinguished.

“We had a fuel line blow apart, that’s all,” he said after the incident.

“I’ve never had that happen before.”

After the tractor was towed back to its trailer, Kelsey was busy trying to repair the machine in time to run again in the open division.

“I want to see if I can fix it and hopefully run again tonight,” he said.

Oregon puller Steve Devine, who competed after Kelsey, said incidents like that can happen.

“That’s why we wear the protective gear,” he said.

Numbers and optimism on the upswing for Hawks

A telling sign of today’s economy and how it translates to the Oregon Hawk football program is a shortage of helmets.

“It’s good problem to have,” Oregon new coach Broc Kundert said. “If we run out and can’t buy any, we’ll figure out a way to get some.”

Compared to numbers in the 50s the past few years, Kundert expects to have 75 kids out when practice officially starts up Aug. 8.

“I’ve felt good about summer camp,” Kundert said. “The lowest numbers we’ve had so far is 60 and we have been getting more kids that have never played before.”

Kundert is quickly developing a reputation as a player’s coach.

“The players are talking to guys and we’re getting more out,” said 6-foot-2, 285-pound lineman Evan Flaharty said. “The more players we have, the more energy and enthusiasm on the practice field. Lot’s of team bonding.”

Anchoring the line with Flaharty will be 6-0, 250-pound Jon Alaniz. Both are seniors and part of a group that are mostly over 235 pounds.

“Coach definitely has a personality,” Alaniz said. “With a new coach and new system, there’s more interest.

Day to day, things are starting to build.”

That’s Kundert’s number one objective.

“The main thing is to get the numbers up first,” he said. “They’ve been beat up for so long, we have to give them a sense of confidence. It’s a challenge, but don’t think it’s impossible. I want to make it fun to be in the weightroom.”

Kundert, a 2007 graduate of Freeport, went on to play middle linebacker at 5-foot-7 for Wisconsin Platteville during the Ryan McWethy/Brian Snyder era. After that, it was back to Freeport where he eventually became defensive coordinator.

The last four years were spent as head coach at Aquin, where his 2020/21 Covid team was ranked No. 1 in the state for 1A in its last season as an 11-man program.

Aquin was noted for its high-scoring spread offense, whereas Oregon has been ground-and-pound.

Will there be a happy medium as new coach meets an entrenched program that has struggled with its passing attack.

“It may look a little different from years past, but we will try to balance 50/50 run pass,” said Kundert, prefer-

Another major difference in the 2022 squad compared to years past will be an extensive use of sophomores compared to the decades long practice of primarily juniors and seniors.

“We want to build on their 7-2 (freshman) record. It’s a good group with over 30 kids,” Kundert said. “The sophomores we bring up will be starting for us and not playing jayvee.”

That freshmen group ended their year beating Byron and Dixon in a jamboree, after losing to them earlier in the season. They also have a lot of size and a quarterback in Jack Washburn that will contend for the starting nod.

One sophomore that is already penciled as a starter is Josh Crandall, a 6-3, 190-pound end, the last of three football-playing brothers and potential college prospect.

Oregon will be young at the skilled positions, but has senior Gabe Eckerd returning as running back. Kundert sees him and junior Trevor Burkhart getting a lot of carries.

“Gabe will also be our leader in defense at inside linebacker,” Kundert

said. “I like the play of Griffin Marlatt at corner and as receiver.”

Oregon wrapped up its camp with a 7-on-7 against Byron, after facing off against Du-Pec and West Carroll in previous days. Assisting Kundert will be David Boyer as offensive coordinator and John Bothe as line coach.

Kundert will concentrate on the defense.

“The defense will run to the ball well and on offense, our young skilled players will grow into it,” he said.

Oregon has not won more than three games since 2014, its last playoff team. Could this be the year the Hawks make a move towards a winning record?

“It’s time to stop getting beat up and taking it to them,” Alaniz said.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Aug. 2 Kevin Jones, 43, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop near Milwaukee Street and Stillman Road at around 3:08 p.m. Jones was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

At around 4:26 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on Illinois Route 72 at Interstate 39. After an investigation, two passengers were arrested. Amber Keener, 37, of Lindenwood, was arrested for an outstanding Lee County warrant and possession of drug paraphernalia. Chet Harrolle, 39, of Lindenwood, was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container.

Keener and Harrolle were transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Joshua Swift, 46, of Davis, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and violation of the Concealed Carry Act after deputies responded to a single-vehicle

crash in the 9000 block of Illinois Route 2 at around 8:59 p.m. Swift also was cited for speeding, improper lane usage, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, illegal transportation of alcohol and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Aug. 3 Jesus Diaz, 42, of Rockford, was arrested for no driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 2700 block of North Kilbuck Road at around 7:29 p.m. Diaz also was cited for operating with suspending registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Diaz was taken into custody without incident and released from the scene on a $2,500 I-Bond and given a future court date.

Aug. 5 Demarcus Mitchell, 40, of Freeport, was arrested for aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, aggravated driving while license revoked and driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 4

and Mulford Road at around 9:03 p.m.

Mitchell also was cited for suspended registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Mitchell was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending a court appearance.

Nicholas J. Tassoni, 25, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies, Byron police and Byron EMS responded to the vicinity of North Barker Road and Twin Oaks Drive in Byron at around 10:37 p.m. for a reported crash. Upon arrival, deputies found a Chevrolet Silverado had struck a tree before overturning. Tassoni also was cited for failure to reduce speed. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Aug. 6 Anastase Man, 20 of Dixon, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois Route 2 and Kennedy Hill Road at around 1:19 p.m. Man also was cited for speeding. Man was released from the scene on a $2,500 I-Bond and given a future court date.

Aug. 7 Pablo Alvarez, 23, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, no valid driver’s license and driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 38 and Brooklyn Road at around 12:53 a.m. Alvarez also was cited for improper lane usage. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending a court appearance.

Daniel Owens, 57, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop. At around 2:47 p.m., deputies responded to a reckless driving complaint near the intersection of Illinois Route 72 and Conger Road. Deputies located Owens in the 6000 block of Illinois Route 2. Owens was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

These charges are accusations and all subjects are presume innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
