SSET 4 School gearing up for its 19th year SUBMITTED BY JANE KOELLER It’s time to get S.S.E.T. (Supplying Students Educational Tools) 4 School!

This is the 19th year of the supply drive, and the need is as great now as it was in 2003. Because there is always a need, we are once again collecting school supplies for students in the Forrestville Valley School District.

Lions offering pork chop dinner

The Forreston Lions will be having a drive-thru pork chop dinner on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Park.

One chop meal includes butterfly pork chop, applesauce, chips, cookies and cup of sauerkraut along with a bottle water for $12.

Forreston Reformed Church to host community Vacation Bible School

Forreston’s community Vacation Bible School will take place at Forreston Reformed Church on Aug. 1-5 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Child Evangelism Fellowship will provide teachers for this event, which is open to children ages 5 to 12. There will be Bible lessons, songs, activities, games, memory verses and prizes.

Join Miss Melinda from Ag In the Classroom as she teaches us all about the water cycle. She will share a story, science experiment, crafts, and a snack that all involve water. The supplies will be distributed to any family in the Forrestville Valley School district that qualifies for the free/reduced lunch program. This includes in-person

learning, e-learning, and/or home-school students.

The Leaf River United Methodist Church is hosting a Community Blood Drive on Monday, Aug. 8.

Staff from the Rock River Valley Blood Center will draw blood between noon and 6 p.m.

If you are at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and

are in general good health, you should be eligible to donate blood.

One in three people will need blood and you never know when you or someone you love might be the one.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center is the sole supplier of blood and related services to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Rockford Health System, SwedishAmerican Health System, Beloit Health System, Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, FHN, Mercy Harvard Hospital, SwedishAmerican Medical Center – Belvidere, and Rochelle Community Hospital.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center needs to collect 1,000 units each week to meet area patient needs.

Festival in ‘desperate need’ of volunteers

azoellner@shawmedia.com Forreston Sauerkraut Days is making its way back to the village with some new and returning activities.

The festival is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 7.

“People should come because this is really a great family event that really offers [a lot],” said Jane Koeller, Sauerkraut Days Committee chairperson.

“We work really hard to have something for everyone.”

There are plenty of new offerings this year, she said.

For part of Friday night, the biergarten tent will become a family-friendly festival tent, Koeller said.

There will be a spaghetti eating contest, musical chairs for children and adults, Forreston’s “largest game” of Simon Says, board and card games and some bags games.

All of the family festival tent activities will be open to attendees at no cost, she said.

On Saturday, there’s the Forreston American Legion Car and Bike Show, the Drew Crase Memorial Basketball Tournament, live music and the craft and vendor show, she said. There also is the American Legion Sauerkraut lunch and the Forreston Lion’s pork

chop dinner, both of which take place at Memorial Park.

Sauerkraut won’t be just for the lunch this year, Koeller said. It also will be offered at the Lion’s dinner.

“We’re having it with as many meals as possible,” she said.

The Kraut Days 5K Run/Walk and the Cabbage Patch Kids Fun Run were moved to Saturday morning, Koeller said.

“We got some feedback that it would be better to not be on a Friday when people have worked all week long,” she said.

Participants can register for the 5K online or the day-of prior to the event, Koeller said.

The Forreston Firefighter’s Community Breakfast will be on Sunday morning, as usual, she said. Following that will be the parade at 12:30 p.m.

“Part of the reason we can do these things is we received some very generous donations this year,” she said. “We had some great sponsors, so it makes it easy to do some stuff.”

Strong wind lifts ‘flex’ surface at Oregon tennis courts

Strong storms ripped across Ogle County early Sunday morning felling trees and rearranging the look at one Oregon park.

Residents across the county reported trees and or branches down as the wind, followed by heavy rain, started late Saturday evening and moved into the early hours of Sunday.

Walkers at the Oregon Park District’s Park West saw how forceful the wind was as it lifted the plastic court covering, called Flex Court, off the tennis courts.

“This was certainly an unusual situation and has not occurred in the past,” Oregon Park District Executive Director Erin Folk said. “The surfacing on all three tennis courts was rolled from the northwest corner back to the nets as a result of the high winds.”

Folk said the same surface is installed at the Park West basketball courts and no damage was occurred there from the storm.

“The district was very fortunate to have staff on hand who developed a plan to roll the surfacing back into place with no damage.

No expenses, beyond labor, were incurred and fortunately the surfacing is back to its original state,” she said.

The surfacing is called “Flex Court” and the company headquarters is located in Machesney Park, Folk said.

MT. MORRIS – The Performing Arts Guild will hold auditions for its fall performance of “A Christmas Story” on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 9 and 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pinecrest Grove Library, 500 Evergreen Lane, Mt. Morris.

The cast consists of two men, two women, five boys and two girls.

Performances will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-6 and Nov. 11-13 at the Pinecrest Grove Theatre.

This beloved holiday story is humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of

growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s and follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas.

All of the elements from the well-known motion picture will be in this performance.

Materials will be provided at the audition, so those interested in auditioning should come early to review the readings.

Harman Family Bluegrass Band on stage at July 29 Jamboree

The Harman Family Bluegrass Band, consisting of first- and second-generation musicians with deep musical roots dating to 1975, returns to the Mt. Morris Jamboree on July 29 at 7 p.m.

Band members Mark, Jeff and John Harman have performed professionally for many years.

“People have had the privilege watching them since early childhood excel in their musical talents. Their parents, Mike and Stacy round out the quintet,” organizer Larry Ubben said. “Mike was a Rounder recording artist and a member of the Alison Krauss Union Station Band from 1986 to 1990, during which time he performed on the Grand Ole’ Opry and recorded on the Grammy nominated Two Highways album and on the platinum seller, “Now That I’ve Found You-A Collection” by Alison Krauss.”

Mark and Jeff, as well as their father Mike, have won and placed in various talent and band contests throughout the country and performed at the renowned Station Inn, Nashville, Tennessee, Ubben said.

The Harman’s music style ranges from traditional to contemporary bluegrass, country, gospel and various types of music.

Concessions for the evening will be provided by Ralfie’s BBQ serving food and drinks starting at 6 p.m.

The Jimmys return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.

“The Jimmys make their triumphant return to the Mt. Morris Band Shell on Aug. 5 with a big, happy blast of joyful noise,” Ubben said. “One of the hottest tickets on the summer festival circuit and recent recipients of many more Madison Area Music Awards, Jimmy and his stellar group

Ubben said The Jimmys have been “ripping up stages with their unique blend of blues, soul, funk and R&B for 10 years.”

“Award-winning keyboardist/singer/ songwriter Jimmy Voegeli has put together an all-star lineup: Perry Weber, veteran blues guitarist/singer/songwriter; Chris Sandoval on drums; John Wartenweiler with his powerful bass lines and deep groove; Amateur Horn Stars Pete Ross, saxophone; Mike Boman, trumpet; and Joe Goltz on trombone,” Ubben said.

The Jimmys are a popular attraction for the Jamboree so Ubben recommends people come early.

“Be sure to arrive early to get a good spot for the night and remember to bring a chair or blanket as the new benches will fill up fast as this band always sets a record attendance for our program,” Ubben said.

Concessions for the evening will be provided by Chapter CU of the local PEO Organization, serving meatball sandwiches, vegetarian “meatball” sandwiches, hot dogs, coleslaw, chips, ice cream sandwiches, water and pop. Ralfie’s BBQ will be there, too, starting at 6 p.m.

“Please bring a blanket or chair, or enjoy the new benches and join the fun on our beautiful, historic campus in the center of Mt. Morris, two blocks south of Route 64 on Wesley Avenue and enjoy these free concerts,” Ubben said.

In the event of rain, concerts move to the Pinecrest Grove Community Center, located at 500 Evergreen Lane, seven blocks south of Illinois 64 on McKendrie Street.

Final Kable Band concert of 2022 season is Aug. 3 The Kable Concert Band will perform the final concert of its 126th season on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

The featured vocal soloist will be Bruce McKanna. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

“Benches are available, or bring a lawn chair and join us on the Mt. Morris Campus. Enjoy the concert directed by Andy Eckardt performed from the Warren Reckmeyer Bandshell. Flower show in Polo Saturday, Aug. 6 The Polo Woman’s Garden Club Flower Show is Saturday, Aug. 6, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Polo Area Senior Center, 101 E. Mason Street, in Polo.

This year’s theme is “BEE-UTIFUL BLOOMS.” Gardeners are invited to “sign up” to display their plantings for their own enjoyment and for any onlookers out for a pleasant afternoon.

The variety of categories people may enter include “cut flowers,” “wildflower arrangements,” “outdoor container plantings”- “not house plants,” “floral bouquets,” “single specimen of flower,” and a “horticulture category for vegetables.”

First-, second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded in each adult class plus a “People’s Choice” award will be given. In addition to the main exhibits, there will be other demonstrations and presentations going on during the afternoon.

Master Gardener Leah Patapack from Oregon will be giving a talk called “Buzz on Pollinators” with handouts on the importance of pollinators and how to attract them.

Gardener Pat Kuhn from Polo will be showing the “Many things you can do with dried and preserved flowers.”

Bri Kuhn, also from Polo, will demonstrate and explain about creating “Fresh Floral Designs.”

There will be drawings for door prizes, donated through the generosity of businesses within the city of Polo and surrounding towns. Those contributing to the flower show from Polo are Country Floral, Fresh Foods Grocery Store, Polo Pharmacy and Knie’s Appliance Store.

t was time to reorganize the shelving unit which was full of scrapbooks, ledgers, diaries, history books, photograph albums and boxes of pictures.

I go to sleep mulling over what we will do the next day and I already had in my mind a way to shift things around. This would utilize the space better. Lily instantly saw what I had in mind the next day. I am amazed how quickly the minds of young people work.

But first we had to hang the new OPEN flag that Mike had purchased.

People will know that someone is working at the museum and they can come in to ask questions or look around.

Ten minutes after Mike had placed the flag in the holder, the door opened and in came someone who said, “I saw your OPEN flag and came over to take a picture.” Obviously it worked. Now I need to be a couple of inches taller, which probably is not going to happen

Why on earth would I have not attempted to put the flag in myself? I do not know!!

Next we moved furniture around and we like that arrangement much better. We had brought another file down from Aplington House earlier in the spring that had churches, early Polo, library, fire department and railroad. It needed to be down in our work room and the file reorganized.

As we put away the Lutheran Church history, all the church files would have to be redone. Lily and I tackled all of that and we decided the new arrangement worked much better.

At some point Mike, Lily and I got the big sheet of plastic over the first side of the Lutheran Church history.

My, was that an ordeal and we also discovered we were missing the second big sheet of plastic. That was probably the reason that one last board was never done.

Now we have to get a big sheet of plastic cut somewhere and Mike will take care of that. We had hoped to have that display board finished. These display boards were purchased years ago before I even started in at the museum.

Then Lily and I started on the big shelving unit. Mary Elizabeth Garrison, bless her heart, had several scrapbooks that followed the lives of all of her students. If you were one of her students, you are in one of her scrapbooks.

Other teachers had scrapbooks of various kinds. Other people had scrapbooks of what was going on in Polo and several people had made scrapbooks of their four years in high school.

One could spend a day just sitting and looking through someone’s life in high school especially if it was in the 1920s. I opened one scrapbook and there was the wedding picture of my granddaughter Amy and her new husband, Preston.

I did a double take and then realized this was a Waterbury scrapbook done

by Betty Livingston. She had several books done and I am certain my wedding picture was in there somewhere. I did not have time to look.

All these needed to be labeled and neatly stacked together. Then we had photograph albums of many sizes and shapes. Most of those were very old, have to be handled very carefully, and needed to be labeled That has now all been done. It was quite a day and I came home ready to get into my chair.

Lowden instrumental in getting Camp Grant in Rockford

By OTTO DICK This is a follow-up of two articles concerning Camp Grant during WWI and WWII. Camp Grant was located in the southern outskirts of Rockford and named in honor of American Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant. It covered an area of 6,500 acres during World War I and 3,200 acres during World War II and was in operation from 1917 to 1946.

Frank Lowden lived at the Sinnissippi Farm adjacent to Daysville. In 1916 Frank Lowden was elected our 35th governor of Illinois.

The following year, the United States became involved in WWI on April 6, 1917. Gov. Lowden, with his knowledge of the Rock River Valley, knew of land available south of Rockford and convinced the United States government to purchase this land to become an army training camp to be named Camp Grant.

In three months, starting June 24, 1917, more than 180 barracks were built on the site. It was estimated that 50,000 individuals worked on the project with the total cost of building the camp of $7,000,000.

This camp was used for training infantry, becoming one of the largest military training facilities in the United States during World War I. After the war, the camp was turned over to the Illinois National Guard.

Between 1933 and 1935 the camp was used by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

During World War II, in February 1941, Camp Grant was reactivated as an induction center and Army Medical Service training center. At this time the land then owned by Illinois was given back to the federal government.

During the war Camp Grant also served as a prisoner of war detention center, employing more than 6,000 civilians. About 2,500 POWs were held

in the camp. After WWII, Camp Grant also served as a separation center for returning veterans.

Post war, several of the barracks were converted into apartments for returning veterans.

After the apartments were torn down Seth B. Atwood owned much of the land and donated the Camp Grant Rifle Range to the Rockford Park District and it was named Seth Atwood Park.

Now the Chicago Rockford Interna-

tional Airport occupies much of the land that used to be Camp Grant.

So Camp Grant was originally farm land, then a WWI camp, an Illinois National Guard facility, a National Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC Camp) a WWII Army Medical Training Center, a POW camp and now a very large Rockford airport.

All of the above because of Gov. Lowden, who also influenced the C and I railroad to build an upscale depot in his hometown of Oregon, Illinois.

A conversation on a rail tour started the wheels turning for a vintage rail car to be moved to the Oregon Depot while it is being restored.

This week, the sleek parlor car should arrive at its new home.

“It is on the way,” said Roger Cain, one of the Oregon Depot volunteers helping with the project. “We think it should be here Wednesday.”

So how does one of the signature Vista Dome cars for Burlington’s famed Twin Cities Zephyrs make it to Oregon?

Well, the journey began when former Oregon resident Peter Medins, now of Woodstock, met Mike Abernethy, of St. Charles, the owner of the Silver View. The two were on a rail tour when they started talking about Abernethy’s ongoing restoration work on the sleek rail car that was sitting in Charles City, Iowa.

Medins, who remembers taking a trip from Oregon to Minneapolis on

the Twin Cities Zephyr as a child, suggested Abernethy move the Silver View closer to St. Charles and proposed the Oregon Depot.

Earlier this year, officials from the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe (BNSF) agreed to replace and upgrade the “house” track – the track that once served the freighthouse – just west of the Oregon Depot for the Silver View to sit on.

That track, which sits north of the active BNSF freight line, will be the Silver View’s new home during its next restoration phase.

The Oregon Depot Museum Board was offered a $5,000 matching donation from Medins for costs associated with moving the Silver View. The Oregon Depot Board matched his donation with funds given by local donors.

On Tuesday, Medins handed his check to Cain.

“I remember when R.L. Sharick took kids on one of the last trips the Twin Cities Zephyr made from Chicago to Minneapolis,” Medins said.

“He had a ‘Golden Pass’ since he had

been with the railroad for 50 years, so we got on at 6 a.m., went to Minneapolis, had lunch and came back home.”

The Twin Cities Zephyr stopped running through Oregon in 1971, Medins said.

“Oregon was a stop on the Twin Cities route and Mike remembered Oregon with the Black Hawk Statue and the bridge. It was kind of like ‘old home week’ when I met him,” Medins said.

Abernethy is president and tour operator of Zephyr Route, a small privately owned business he launched to fund the restoration of the Silver View.

“We are dedicated to offering high quality rail tours reminiscent of the way rail travel was operated in the past,” Abernethy’s website reads.

Earlier this week, the Canadian National Railway moved the Silver View to East Dubuque and then to Savanna. After a unscheduled detour to Prairie du Chien, the car was expected to arrive in Oregon on Wednesday.

Oregon Depot officials said, “It should pass the depot on its way east of Oregon to either Flagg Center or

Aurora to be turned around and come back to the depot. It will likely go east one day and then come back west the next. Keep your eye on our Facebook page. We hope to be able to accurately alert everyone of its timing, both eastbound and westbound, so you can grab your cameras.”

Silver View Facts The following information was provided by the Oregon Depot.

Silver View was built by the Budd Co. and delivered to Burlington on Nov. 29, 1947. It immediately became one of the signature Vista Dome cars for the Burlington’s famed Twin Cities Zephyrs. The Twin Cities Zephyrs operated between Chicago and its names’ sake cities. It was marketed as “where natures smiles for 300 miles.”

Silver View and its sister car, Silver Vista, both operated as daytime parlor cars with one drawing room.

Their domes were configured with the customary 24 seats. The “main floor” of the cars had 26 parlor seats in the tail/observation end.

Norm Deets has spent his farming career trying to get the most out of the land that’s given him a livelihood.

So when he set aside 30 acres for research, it might have looked to some like a decision that came out of left field, but it wasn’t. It came out of another field Deets was interested in: the field of science.

That’s why, when researchers were looking for farmers who’d let them

get their hands dirty in the name of science, he decided to do his part — not only for his own farm, but farms everywhere.

The Milledgeville farmer is taking part in a study with the University of Illinois funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, in which researchers observe the changes in soil health over a 5-year peri-

od. The first year concluded last August.

Deets, 65, has firsthand the benefits of promoting better soil health. He implemented no-till and cover crop practices for more than 35 years and has seen healthier soil and improved yields, but he knows that’s just his own personal observations. Having scientific researchers back up and affirm his observations is something he welcomes, and he’s enjoyed seeing what the University of Illinois Extension has come up with through soil sample collections.

Utilizing a 30-acre field for the research, one half has cover crops and the other half does not.

“I had personal things that I believe, but I didn’t have anything that the University of Illinois would have that would measure and quantify it for me,” Deets said. “I’ve been no-tilling since 1985, so I’ve seen some things happen. No-tilling alone only took me to a certain degree of soil health.

“We can’t really walk out there and look at it and say, ‘This is healthy, and this is not.’ I can view things and I can see things, but they have the science.”

the ag industry in recent years as both farmers and researchers have come to realize the important role healthy soil plays, not only in farmers’ bottom lines — with increased and healthier yields — but in the environment, too, where healthier soils can impact water and air quality.

Leading the way in helping soil get a good check-up are soil conservation practices such as no-till farming and cover crops. No-till leaves behind crop residue after the harvest to help protect the topsoil from erosion caused by wind and rain. The remnants left behind also help the crops that follow by increasing water retention. Cover crops are planted not to harvest, but to help slow erosion, smother weeds, improve water retention, add organic matter to the soils, attract pollinators and control pests and diseases.

Deets has been a believer in cover crops, embracing the practice on his farm in recent years. He tried them out first on his soybean fields and then in his corn fields. It worked great, he said.

“When they came up with the thought process of cover crops, I started doing that and my soil responded,” he said.

Deets religiously takes time to read about ways to get the most out of his soil, and an article on the topic that appeared in an Illinois Farm Bureau magazine a couple of years ago really caught his attention. In it, farmers were asked if they would be willing to participate in soil health studies. Deets was happy to oblige. His farm became one of nine in Illinois to be a part of the study, and his was especially unique in being the northernmost among them, located in an area where the soil makeup has much to do with the topography.

In northwest Illinois, the ground is made up of a lot of timber soil, formed under forest vegetation.

This is different from the central part of the state and its prairie soils. According to the Illinois State Museum, the difference between prairie and forest soils is the

EUNICE M. ANDERSON Born: August 12, 1936 Died: July 19, 2022

Eunice M. Anderson, 85, of Mt. Morris went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 19, 2022. She was born August 12, 1936, in Page, North Dakota, to Rev. Maurice and Elsie

(Ulstrom) Powers.

A soprano who loved to sing, Eunice had the opportunity to be a soloist at New Berlin High School, where she graduated in 1954.

She went on to complete nurse’s training and earn her RN at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Illinois.

WAYNE C. BICKSLER Born: February 4, 1938 Died: July 22, 2022

Wayne C. Bicksler, 84, of Freeport, died July 22, 2022, at Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris. He was born February 4, 1938, in Freeport, IL, and was the son of Archibald and Orelda (Brandt) Bicksler.

He graduated from Leaf River High School in 1956. He married Donna Mae Groen in 1978 in Oregon, IL. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2012. Wayne worked as a machinist for Seward Screw and Barber-Colman retiring after 50+ years in 2004. Wayne loved to travel throughout the United States and Europe. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan, living the dream back in 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series.

JAMES ‘JIM’ A. JETER Born: September 16, 1977 Died: July 24, 2022

Jim Jeter, affectionately known as ‘Bonez’ passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022 after a short battle with cancer at the age of 44.

Jim was born Friday, September 16, 1977 in Dixon, IL to Dave and Evie Baker.

He was a welder by trade, employed at Hennig, Inc. A lifelong resident of Oregon, IL,

She met William Paul Anderson while she was working asa nurse at Case Western Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and the two were married on August 11, 1962, in Chrisman, IL. After they married, the couple moved to Muskogee, OK, and then to McPherson, KS, where their two children were born. The family soon settled in Mt. Morris, IL, where Eunice worked as a nurse for 26 years at Pinecrest Manor, retiring in 1998.

Eunice was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church of Mt. Morris. Over the years, she sang in the choir, she and Paul helped lead the youth group early on, and she later taught Sunday school for many years, and served on the social committee and as a deaconess.

Eunice especially enjoyed her grandchildren, and she and Paul clocked many miles traveling weekly to and from Wheaton, Illinois, to

help care for them. She also served on two mission trips to Honduras and traveled to Louisiana to lend aid after Hurricane Katrina.

At home, she enjoyed visiting with friends and family, sewing clothes, reading, and puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; two children, Beth Hoglund of Rockford, and Doug (Katherine) Anderson of Wheaton; 9 grandchildren, Wyatt Anderson, Samuel Anderson, Bella Anderson, Marion Anderson, Mike Hoglund, Cindy (Greg) Walters, Randy (Bonnie) Hoglund, Val Hoglund, and Brad (Sonia)Hoglund; 11 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Marjorie Oakes of Warrens, WI, and Ruth (Fredrick) Menzof Menomonie, WI. She was preceded in death by Eunice and Paul’s son-in-law, Gene Hoglund, along

with their brother-in-law, Lloyd Oakes, and Eunice’s parents.

Eunice was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who served the Lord and others faithfully, and who believed the promise of God’s Word in Psalm 16:11, “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy.”

Her celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Evangelical Free Church of Mt. Morris with Rev. Bruce McKanna officiating. The visitation will also be held at the church, beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be immediately following the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Morris.

OREGON POLICE July 12 At 3:03 p.m. police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 100 block of S. 5th Street involving a 2021 Chevrolet driven by Jeffrey M. Billeter, 65, of Byron, and a parked 2016 Audi belonging to Andrew C. Tangen, 38, of Mundelein. No citations were issued.

Ogle County Fair offers wide variety of family fun Everything you expect from a county fair will be on tap with a family-friendly price at this year’s Ogle County Fair.

Fair Board President Tom Simpson urged the public to turn out to see all the fair has to offer.

“We’re a traditional county fair with a family atmosphere,” he said.

“You have to experience it.”

The 168th Ogle County Fair will be held Wednesday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 7, at the fairgrounds at 1440 N. Limekiln Road, one mile west of Oregon just north of Illinois 64.

Fairgoers will be treated to two new free ground shows this year, Simpson said. The Pirates of the Columbian Caribbean features aerial acrobatics, and Wolves of the World stars rescued wolves from around the globe.

The ground shows will take place every day of the fair. Other free shows include the Brian Holt Magic Show, chainsaw artist Dave Ferrell and the strolling Ta-Da Robotics.

The fair begins on Wednesday, Aug. 3, with the 2022 Fair Queen Pageant at 5:30 p.m.

Traditional grandstand shows

include truck and tractor pulls on Wednesday and Thursday, the Big Hat Rodeo on Friday, and the demolition derby on Saturday.

The Tri County Pullers will bring their mini-rod tractors to the fair for the first time on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m.

Simpson said exhibitors will show off their talents and hard work throughout the fair at the Open Show and Junior Open Show in the Exhibit Building.

The fair’s $8 admission fee includes not only ground shows and exhibits but also unlimited carnival rides.

“In the end you get quite a bit for your money,” Simpson said.

For even more savings, admission tickets can be purchased in advance at a cost of $6 a person – a $2 discount from the gate price – at Casey’s General Stores throughout the county.

Signs will be posted designating where tickets are available. Discounted tickets for the grandstand shows also are available in advance at the same locations at a cost of $8 a person, also $2 less than the $10 regular price.

Children ages 3 and younger get into the fair free but each will need a $4 wristband to ride at the carnival.

Wristbands are available at the gate.

Advance tickets also can be purchased online by going to the fair website at www.oglecountyfair.com. Tickets purchased online will carry an additional convenience fee.

Besides traditional fair foods, a pork chop dinner will be served by the Ogle County Pork Producers on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY July 20 Steven W. Dodson, 44, of Chana, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies responded to 103 Oak Ave. at about 9:14 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance.

Dodson was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 21 Kyle Border, of Durand, was arrested for reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. At 2:42 p.m., deputies responded to 890 Illinois Route 38 in Rochelle for a two-vehicle crash that previously occurred on Interstate 39. An investigation led to Border’s arrest. Border was released on a $2,500 I-Bond and given a future court date.

Zachariah S. Flatt, 19, of Tennessee, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at Illinois Route 38 and Thorpe Road at around 11:52 p.m. Flatt also was cited for an inoperable headlight. Flatt was taken into custody without incident and released on a $2,500 I-Bond and given a future court date.

July 22 Joshua Raby, 40, of Rockford, was cited for driving while license suspended, no

insurance and suspended registration after a traffic stop in the 6000 block of Illinois Route 251 at around 10:38 a.m. Raby was released from the scene on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

July 23 John Huenefeld, 56, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Deputies responded to a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of 5th and Garfield streets in Leaf River at 8:53 a.m. While checking the area, deputies located Huenefeld’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of West Grove and Leaf River roads at around 9:19 a.m. Huenefeld also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of a property damage crash. Huenefeld was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. The Mt. Morris Police Department assisted with the incident.

Bradley Highbarger, 49, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Moore Road at around 5:03 p.m. Highbarger also was cited for illegal window tint. Highbarger was

transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Marcus Hart, 37, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop on Illinois Route 38, just west of Interstate 39 at around 8:29 p.m. Hart also was cited for illegal window tint and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

At around 11:23 p.m., deputies responded to the 400 block of Illinois Route 26 in reference to a single vehicle rollover crash.

An investigation showed a southbound vehicle driven by Savon Monroe, 26, of Dixon, left the roadway and entered the east ditch where it overturned. Monroe was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while license revoked, driving while under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, operating a vehicle with suspended registration, child restraint violation, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal transportation of alcohol. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending a court appearance. The Polo Fire Protection District and EMS and Polo Police Department

assisted at the scene.

Joseph R. Diehl, 28, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Deputies responded to a driving complaint of a vehicle traveling southbound on North Kishwaukee Road from Condon Road (Winnebago County) at 11:31 p.m.

Deputies located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the 8000 block of North River Road. Diehl also was cited for expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and disregarding a stop sign. Diehl was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 24 Eric Lampman, 48, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 1000 block of North River Road at around 8:55 a.m. Lampman was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Richard Reeves, 35, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies located a vehicle parked in the ditch in the 4800 block of East Short Road at around 10:22 p.m. Reeves was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

These charges are accusations and all subjects are presumed innocent unless proved guilty in a court of law.
