AnOgleCountyjudgeruledlast weekthatprosecutorsfailedtoprove anOhiomanintendedtomurderan OgleCountydeputy whenheveered hiscartowardthedeputy’spolice vehiclefollowingahigh-speedchase inNovember.

JudgeJohnRedingtongranted a defenserequestforadirectedverdict findingBrianK.Taylor,29,ofMassillon,Ohio,notguiltyFeb.22oftwo countsofattemptedfirst-degreemurderandonecountofaggravatedbatterytoapeaceofficer.

Redingtonfound Taylorguiltyof threeClass4felonies:aggravated assaultof apeaceofficerandtwo countsofaggravatedfleeingtoeludea policeofficer.

Redingtonmadehisdecision after the prosecution restedfollowingtestimony fromtwocountydeputies andtheplayingoftwodash cameravideosoftheNov.22 high-speedchasethatoriginatedinStephensonCounty.

“Atnopointintimedo I intendto minimizethefeelingthatSgt.Halfmanhad thathebelievedMr.Taylor wasintendingtokillhim,”Redington saidbeforerenderinghisverdict “Therearejustnosupportingfactsto supporttheargumentthatheintended tokillOfficerHalfman.”

OgleCountyPatrolSgt.Michael HalfmantestifiedhethoughtTaylor wasgoingtohithimwhenhewas standingbyhisstoppedsquadwaiting todeploy“stopsticks”inaneffortto trytostopTaylorwhowasfleeing fromaStephensonCountysheriff’s deputy.

“Ithoughthewasgoingtohitme.I fearedformylife,”testifiedHalfman whohadbeendispatchedat12:15p.m. toassistwiththehigh-speedchase

thatoriginated nearDakota, Illinois.

Earlierinthetrial,StephensonCountyDeputyAnthony MillertestifiedhestartedpursuingTaylorabout11:59a.m inDakotaonRoute75after clockinghimat70mphina55 mphzone.

MillersaidhepursuedTaylortoU.S.Route20whenhe realizedhewasfleeing.Hesaid Taylormade“abruptturns”andwent throughaditchandoveramedian beforeenteringFreeport.HesaidTaylordisobeyedstopsignsandtrafficsignalsduringthepursuitwithspeeds reaching110mph.

Thechasecontinuedthrough FreeportonIllinois26andthensouthinto OgleCountyandeventuallyonto FreeportRoad.

AsthevehiclesreachedtheintersectionofFreeportandMilledgeville roads,Millersaidhecouldclearlysee Halfmanandhisparkedsquadinthe northboundlane.

MillersaidTaylor’sMazdaveered towardHalfmanandthentheditch

beforeenteringtheditchandthenexitingtheditch, eventuallystrikinghis squadcar.Taylor’scarcametoarestin theditchandhe wasapprehended.

Halfmansaidhehadparkedhis squadcarinthenorthboundlanenear theintersectionofFreeportand Milledgevilleroadsandwasreadyto deploythestop stickstoflattenTaylor’stireswhenhesawtheMazda Miatainthesouthboundlanebeing pursuedata“highrateof speed” by Miller.

Halfmantestifiedhedidnothave timetodeploythestopsticksbecause theMazdaswervedintothenorthboundlaneandthendirectlyathis squadcausinghimtomovetoavoid beinghit.

“Oncehe(Taylor)gotclosetome, heswervedintomylane.Iwasmore worriedthathewascomingatmeand wasgoingtohitme,”Halfmansaid.

PublicDefenderMichelO’Brien arguedthatthelawrequiresproofthat Taylorknowinglyintendedtoharm thedeputy.

Woman found deceased near Mt. Morris golf course

Thewomanfounddeceasednear theSunsetGolfClubinMt.Morrison Sundayeveninghasbeenidentifiedas ErinGroves,39,ofOregon.

Policeanddiversfromtwofire departmentsweredispatchedtothe golf courseSundayeveningafteracar wasseeninthepond,OgleCounty SheriffBrianVanVicklesaidSunday night.

“Thegolfcourse folks foundthe vehicleinthepond.TheMt.Morris FireDepartmentcameoutandthey haddiversfromOregonandByron come.Wegotthecaroutofthepond

andtherewasnobodyin there,”VanVicklesaidSundaynight.“Webegan searchingthewoodlineandsome areasalongthegolf courseand wedid findafemaledeceased.Itdoesn’tlook like there’sanything suspicious.”

OgleCountyChiefDeputyCoroner JeanetteBennett onTuesdayidentifiedthewomanasGroves.“The autopsywasdonetodayandtoxicologyhasbeensentout,”Bennettsaid. “Nofoulplay.”

AtthesceneSundaynight,VanVicklesaidthedeathappearedtobe weather related.

Onlytheroofofthecarwasshowingwhenthevehiclewasdiscovered. “That’swhywehadtohavethedivers

come.They wereabletolookinthe carandseethattherewasnoonein the car,”hesaid.

VanVicklesaidGrovesdrove acrossthegolfcourseforsomedistance, running over tee boxes before the car enteredthe pond.

“Shewasfoundjusteastofthegolf courseontheedgeofthecreek/field,” VanVicklesaid.

Thecarwaspulledfromthepond andtowedfromthescenelateSunday nightafterGroves’bodywas transported fromthegolfcoursebyofficials fromtheOgleCountyCoroner’s Office.

The golfcourseislocatedat216 SunsetLaneinthenorthwestcorner

ofMt.Morris.Thepondislocatedin thefarnortheast cornerofthenineholecourse,wellawayfromany roads.Thecourseisbordered onthe northandeastbyfarmfieldsandthe village’ssewertreatment plant,which iswestofNorthMcKendrieAvenue (Mt.MorrisRoad).

AByronmanwithalonglistofpast convictionswasarrestedSaturday afterfleeingpolicethroughByronand intoLeafRiver,strikingtwosquad carsintheprocess.

RobertJ.Murbach,41,wasarrested foronecount each ofaggravatedfleeingtoeludeapoliceofficer(Class4felony);criminaldamagetogovernment-supportedpropertyover$500 (Class3felony);possession ofacon-

trolledsubstance/crackcocaine(Class 4felony);aggravateddrivingwhile undertheinfluence/licenserevoked (Class4felony);aggravatedbatteryto apoliceofficer(Class3felony);and fourcountsofaggravatedassaultto a policeofficer(ClassAmisdemeanor).

ChargeswerenotyetfiledbyOgle CountyState’sAttorneyMikeRockas ofFeb.28.

“We’llbereviewingit,”Rock said. “It’sgoingtobeprettysimilartowhat hecameintocustodyon.”

At2:55a.m.Feb.25,OgleCounty deputiesattemptedtoperformatraffic stop in the11000 block of NorthKennedyHillRoadona2003GMCEnvoy travelingmorethan100 mph,Ogle CountySheriffBrianVanVicklesaid inanewsrelease.Murbachrefusedto

stop,andfledsouthboundonIllinois Route2.

Deputies deployed“stop sticks,”whichsuccessfullydeflated severaloftheGMC’s tires,VanVickle said.Thepursuit continuedinto Byron,whereMurbachturnedsouthontoSouthFoxRun LaneandstoppedonDeerWoodCourt, hesaid.

Murbachrefusedtocomplywith deputies’commands,VanVicklesaid. Murbachdroveaway,almoststriking severaldeputiesintheprocessand strikinga ByronPoliceDepartment

squadcar,hesaid.

DeputiescontinuedtochaseMurbachnorthontoCreeksideDrive wherehepulledintoadriveway, reversed,andstruckanOgleCounty squadcar,VanVicklesaid.TheypursuedMurbachwestboundontoIllinois Route72,untiltheGMCbecamedisabledjusteastofLeafRiver,hesaid.

MurbachwastreatedbyLeafRiver FireProtectionDistrictEMSatthe scene,andthentransportedtoSwedishAmericanHospitalfortreatmentof minorinjuries,VanVicklesaid.He laterwastransportedtotheOgle CountyJailandheldpendingacourt appearance.

Bothsquadcarshadmoderatedamagefrombeinghit,VanVicklesaid.

AssistantState’sAttorneyMatthew Leisten disagreed.“Thedefendant purposelydroveatOfficerHalfman.

Hehadtojumpoutoftheawayto avoidbeinghit,”Leistenargued.

ThedashboardvideofromMiller’s squadshowed Taylorpassingnumerouscarsandtrucks–sometimeson theshoulderandsometimes in no-passingzones–whileclearlydisregardingstopsignsandtrafficsignals.

AtonepointinStephensonCounty,he loopedaroundcarsstopped atan intersectiontoavoidstopping.

Dispatchconversations thatcould beheardonthevideoindicatedspeeds of60mphthroughFreeportonIllinois 26andashighas110mphonFreeport Road.ThewhiteMiatasportscar couldbeseenmakinghard,abrupt turnstotrytoshakeMillerasthedeputyrecordedthespeedofhissquad andthelocation.During thepursuit, Taylorignoredstopsignsattheinter-

sectionsofFreeportRoadandIllinois 62andIllinois64,includingswinging aroundvehiclesastheywerestopped attheintersections.

LeistensaidTaylorshowednoconcernforOgleandStephensoncounty residentsashebrokenumeroustraffic lawswhilefleeingMiller.

“HecausedfearamongOgleand Stephensoncountyresidents,especiallyOfficerHalfman,”Leistensaid.

Leistenarguedthevideosshowed howrecklesslyTaylorwasdriving, especially when heswervedtoward Halfman’ssquadinsteadofcontinuing onsouthonFreeportRoad.

“DeputyMillersawthedefendant purposelydrivinghisvehicletoward OfficerHalfman.Heeasilycouldhave drivenstraightahead Thestopsticks werenotout.Atnotimedidthedefen-

dantintendtostophisvehicle,”Leistensaid.

Taylorsurrenderedwithoutincidentafterhiscarcollidedwiththe rearofMiller’ssquadandthetwodeputiesorderedhimoutofthecar.

WhenaskedbyLeistenwhatTaylor saidafterthechaseended,Millersaid: “Iaskedhimwhyhewasrunningand hesaid‘Ijustwantedtomakeitinteresting.Ididn’tthink you fellascould chaseinthestateofIllinois.’“

RedingtonsetTaylor’ssentencing hearingforApril13pendingapre-sentencereport.

Taylor hadpleadednotguiltytoall thechargesandrequestedabenchtrail insteadofajurytrialduringaFeb.15 hearing.Hehasbeenincustodyinthe OgleCountyCorrectional Centeron $500,000bond sincehisarrest.

Morethan700peopleattendedthe LeafRiverFiremen’sPancakeSupper, whichtookplacetheeveningofFeb. 25.Leaf RiverfirefightersandEMTs servedpancakes,eggs,sausage,juice, coffeeandmilk;thecostwasadonation.

“But it’s definitely easier to have fun and keep from getting stressed out because I’ve been there before. I will really enjoy this year because itis my senior year andit’s goingto bethelasttournamentasanOregonHawk.”

Wight was red-hot in the morning session at the Dundee-Crown Sectional, whereshe rolled games of 223, 275 and 265 for a 763 series to break her program recordof 729 set last season. She cooled off in the afternoon but still finished with a six-game total of 1,312to claim the fourth of five individual state qualifyingspots.

Wight has been bowling sinceseventh grade

She finished 20th at state last season, rolling a 1,197 on both days thatincluded scores of 200 or more in seven of her 12 games. After three-game series of 650 and 547 on Day 1, she found a little more consistency on Day 2, with a 597 in the morning and a 600 in the afternoon.

OHS coach Al Nordman praised Wight’s effortthroughoutheryearsasaHawk.

“She rebounded on Saturday with games of 223, 224, 176, 237, 168, 195 for a 1,223 series climbing into a 31st-place finish. Through the course of the tournament, she set three girls all-timesecond-highOregon historical marks: individual place 31st (Wight 20th, 2022), six-game series 1,223 (1,225, Sammantha Meyers, 2020) and 12-game series 2,346 (Wight2,394,2022),”Nordmansaid.

“Differentguyssteppedupatdifferenttimesand itwasjustareallygoodteamwin,”saidGoff,whohit back-to-backpull-upjumpers midwaythroughthe fourthquartertoputtheRocketsinfront.“Weknew guyswouldstepupwhentheyneededto.Theymight havebeenscorelessinthefirsthalf,butoncethey gottothefourthquarter,theyrealizedthatnotone personwasgoingtodoitall.
