azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – Forreston has a new village hall, although move-in likely won’t take place until at least summer.

Village officials closed on the purchase of 301 N. Walnut St. – formerly Green’s Motor Company – on Jan. 25 for $155,000, according to Ogle County property tax records. The property was purchased outright; no mortgage or loans were necessary, Village President Mark Metzger said.

“We’re excited,” Metzger said. “I’ve talked to several different people in town who’ve heard about it. They think it’s a great opportunity to still be in downtown.”

Having a village hall in or near downtown is important to Forreston residents,

he said, noting the results of a survey taken during past consideration of a potential location north of town.

“We’ve been talking about a new village hall for over 10 years,” Metzger said.

“Sometimes I have to pinch myself that, ‘Hey, we actually got it.’”

Some upgrades and renovations such as electrical work need to be done before village operations are moved to the new building, he said. Metzger said he’s not sure when the move will occur, but noted that it could take several months.

The plan is to allocate space for village board and town hall meetings, the village clerk, the police department, an office for the public works supervisor and, possibly, an office for the village president, Metzger said.

“It’s funny, but I don’t have one [an office] currently,” he said. “But even beyond myself, it’s a nice place to keep documents, have meetings.”

The soon-to-be-former village hall,

located at 102 S. Walnut St., is one of the oldest buildings in Forreston, Metzger said. It shows in its amenities and accessibility, or rather lack thereof, he said.

“With the current village hall, we’ve definitely kind of outgrown and outlived it,” Metzger said. “We’re getting back into the 21st century with this building. We’ll be able to serve the village better and it’s going to be a better work environment for our employees.”

Village Board members formed a New Building Committee tasked with figuring out how operations should be laid out in the new space, what changes need to be made to the building and the budget for associated construction, Metzger said.

Committee members are Village Trustees Katie Kalina, Brittany Busker, Gary Buss and Vickye Norris.

The committee was scheduled to meet Feb. 17 to discuss layout and space ideas for the new village hall.

Melrose Park man wanted to rent out his Rockvale Township ‘summer home’ OREGON – Ogle County Board members on Feb. 15 voted unanimously to deny a Melrose Park man’s request to be allowed to rent his Rockvale Township “summer home” through Airbnb.

Dmitriy Chebanenko sought a special use permit for a house that he owns in the Blackhawk Trail Estates residential subdivision through his company, Amazing Empire. The house is located at 1735 N. Sauk Trail, just north of Oregon.

“When I bought the house, we were never living there,” Chebanenko told Ogle County Zoning Board of Appeals members on Jan. 27. “It was always a summer home, vacation home. I have a lot of friends

and family that actually come and use it.”

On Jan. 20, members of the Ogle County Regional Planning Commission voted unanimously to deny Chebanenko’s petition. Members of the Ogle County ZBA followed suit on Jan. 27, voting 5-0 to deny the petition after they found the request did not meet any of the six standards needed for approval.

Both recommendations were reviewed by the Supervisor of Assessments and Planning & Zoning Committee on Feb. 8.

“The committee’s consensus is to support the denials,” committee Chairperson Rick Fritz said at the Tuesday’s county board meeting.

Should Chebanenko “or other party in interest” fail to comply with the county board’s ruling – which was passed in the form of an ordinance – then they would be subject to legal penalties, according to the ordinance.

Chebanenko did not speak during the Feb. 15 county board meeting and it was unclear to reporters if he attended.

County board members were physically present for the meeting, but the public was asked to attend

Election judge schools set for March The Rock River Center in Oregon will be the classroom for the “Judge of Election School” next month.

“We will be conducting schools for Judges of Election and we have scheduled different times,” said Ogle County Clerk Laura Cook. “All schools will be held at the Rock River Center,

Lindsey making a run for circuit judge

Ogle County Associate Judge Clayton Lindsey is running for circuit judge for the 15th Judicial Circuit, hoping to replace Judge Robert Hanson, who retires Nov. 30 after 16 years on the bench.

The 15th serves Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Carroll and JoDaviess counties.

Lindsey was appointed to the bench in October 2016 and serves primarily in Ogle County, although he also has heard cases in Carroll, Stephenson, Lee, JoDaviess and Kane counties.

Before that, he was a partner with WilliamsMcCarthy LLP, with offices in Oregon and Rockford.

The couple volunteers as youth leaders at Cornerstone Family Church, and have taken several mission trips with high school students to the Bahamas, a North Dakota Indian reservation, Guatemala, Tecate and Minneapolis.

doing although there are times when she comes back out yawning. She is wondering why I am still up.

Some of these events are amazing and I had no idea what all these young people train to do. When they win, they are winning for the United States and when they lose, they have let the United States down.

I think to myself, if everyone in our country would work as hard to make our country look good, think of what could be accomplished. Sadly, this is not the case.

I enjoy seeing all these athletes from all over the world and the stories of their wins and losses. How they overcome injuries and bounce back to compete again when all odds seem to be against them.

I feel badly when they fall and yet they get back up and try again. There is a lesson in there for all of us. Determination is the name of the game and many have lost that part in their life.

I also enjoy seeing the countries they represent and the architecture of their communities. When I watch the news of any newscast, I find the buildings in other nations most interesting.

I am busy paying more attention to the architecture than listening to what is going on.

Then to see the mountains, the terrain, the hillsides as cameras pan the areas of a country is also something I enjoy seeing. While one cannot travel to those places, we can travel by the television.

I also found interesting to hear that all the snow and ice had been man made and when actual snow came, it created problems. They were not used to having snow there and it really

Participants were having difficulty with the loose snow at the edge. If they hit it, it drew them further and for some this ended their run. But for some who were used to skiing in real snow, it did not bother them at all. The snow was to their advantage.

Bobsledding on your belly amazed me as they guide it with their feet, alone and sailing along at high speed.

One needs to be part daredevil I do believe. I finally had to ask, how do they guide that contraption since one hardly ever sees the person move. I was told, with their feet and I find that hard to believe since one hardly ever sees any movement.

Kenneth rarely was interested in the Olympics so we did not watch much of it. This year I have gotten interested in it and have enjoyed the stories about the people.

Last night they were going to do a segment on costumes and I thought that I might enjoy hearing some of that but that was one of those late night things and I simply went to bed.

They needed to do the Super Bowl earlier for us old people so I missed the skate dancing. My rest is more important and maybe today they will show some of it. I will wait and see.

LOCAL HISTORY

By OTTO DICK Charles Dawes was an American banker and politician who was the 30th vice president of the United States from 1925-1929.

Dawes was a friend of Frank Lowden. Mrs. Lowden mentions Dawes several times in her 1906 diary.

March 10, 1906 she wrote, “Frank has gone tonight to the Merchant’s Club banquet as a guest of Charles Dawes.”

It’s interesting that Dawes was not the first choice of the Republican Party for vice president of the United States.

Frank Lowden, his friend, was nominated. However, Lowden turned down the nomination.

From 1909-1951, Dawes lived in Evanston, Illinois. His house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark now occupied by the Evanston Historical Society.

Dawes was the principal speaker of the Republican rally on Oct. 23, 1900, in Oregon. Lowden and Wallace Heckman from Oregon also gave political speeches at this Republican rally.

environmental education as a means to relate wildlife related issues and water quality to all ages.

Marian could often be found out working in her flower beds for many hours on a beautiful day. Marian is survived by her daughters, Tamara (Wes) Martin of Oregon, Melissa (Ron) Hayes-Brechon of Cave City, Arkansas and Heidi (Jim) Lauber of Heath, Texas; five grandchildren Andrea (Travis) Wood Alachua, Florida, Aubrey (Aaron) Eads of Byron, Abigail (Tyler Burke) Martin of Oregon and Michael and Joshua Lauber of Heath, Texas. She is also survived by five great grandchildren and one brother, Willis Weegens. A private burial service at White Oak Cemetery in Forreston will be held. The family wished to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Serenity Hospice and Home. Memorials can be made out to Serenity Home or the Forreston United Methodist Church. Marian Louise (Weegens) Hayes, 81, of Forreston, IL., passed away at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, IL., on Monday February 7, 2022. Marian was born November 8, 1940, at home in Lincoln Township, the daughter of Justus and Edna (Schoonhoven) Weegens. She graduated from Forreston High School in 1958 and began working at Freeport Insurance Company a couple months later. She married LeRoy “Roy” Hayes on July 22, 1961, in Forreston.

Mr. Hayes preceded her in death on May 8, 2021. Marian formed many close and life-long friends over the years. She was a hard worker who had many interests and hobbies. She was very active with the Forreston United Methodist Church, the Forreston Sunshine

ETHEL M. RICHARDSON

Born: February 12, 2022 in Yankeetown, IN Died: February 12, 2022 in Mt. Morris, IL Ethel M. Richardson, a longtime resident of Mt. Morris, IL, passed away on the morning of February 12, 2022. She was at home surrounded by loved ones.

She was born September 26, 1938, in Yankeetown, IN. She was the oldest of 10 children.

She is survived by immediate family Jeffrey L. Richardson, Mary Beth York, and Jon D. Richardson, as well as her extended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. This extended family goes beyond the family tree; many friends over the years have become family. Ethel and her husband Bobbie made their home a welcoming center of love and kindness for decades.

She is preceded by her husband Bobbie L. Richardson, and her parents, Richard C. Pease and Ada Jane (Webster) Pease.

Ethel moved to northern Illinois in 1958, living with her close friend and cousin

Wilma. They both came north for better job opportunities, and by the sounds of her and Wilma’s stories, to also have fun adventures. Through the brother of Wilma’s future husband Ed Ramsey, Ethel met Bobbie, the love of her life. They soon married, having a double ceremony with Wilma (Bates) and Bill Ramsey, during a tornado, just another one of the many adventures. Ethel and Wilma remained close to her final day.

Ethel worked for the telephone company, and then for Watt Publishing Co. in Mt. Morris. She made many friends over the years and enjoyed bowling on the Watt Publishing Team and going to many tournaments.

Her focus was her family and friends. She and Bobbie would enthusiastically travel around the USA and Canada visiting friends and family.

Visitation will be at Finch Funeral Home in Mt. Morris, IL, on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 10 a.m., followed by her funeral at 11 a.m. The commitment ceremony will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens Hillcrest, IL, north of Rochelle. A luncheon will be held afterwards at the Rochelle Moose, at 311 N. Main St., Rochelle, IL 61068 The family requests donations to be sent in Ethel’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in lieu of flowers.

Donald Baugous, longtime Oregon resident, passed away on February 9, 2022. Don was born June 1, 1938 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Roy and Thelma (Green) Baugous. In 2003, Don retired from E.D. Etnyre, where he was employed as a Product Specialist for 38 years.

On October 27, 1978, Don married Marcia Allen. Upon his retirement, he and his wife purchased an RV and spent the next eight years traveling. Don was an avid fisherman.

Gerald was born April 1, 1942 in Rockford, IL, the son of Kenneth & Lucille (Moats) Zellers. He graduated from Mt. Morris High School. Gerald served in the US Army. He worked for HA International from 1984 until 2004.

A total of about 280 Christmas trees were collected and chipped up into useful mulch through the annual Ogle County Christmas tree collection and chipping program, coordinated by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department.

“That is a total of around 14,000 pounds or roughly 7 tons of trees not headed to the landfill.

While the overall number of trees was down this past season, it was good to once again offer curbside collection in some areas. Since program year 1999, a total of almost 16,300 trees, or roughly 408 tons, have been recycled into mulch and not ended up in the landfills,” said Paul Cooney, of the OCSWMD. Starting Dec. 26, Ogle County residents dropped off trees at locations in Rochelle, Byron, Oregon, Monroe Center, Polo, Forreston and Leaf River.

Rochelle residents placed trees out by the curb and the street department came out and chipped them at the curb.

In certain areas, local Future Farmers of America (FFA) volunteers collected trees and brought them to the drop-off point for chipping.

“This year’s collection was held on Saturday, Jan. 8, and was the first organized FFA collection since the winter of 2018-2019 due to weather and pandemic –related problems,” Cooney said. “FFA volunteers in Byron, Forreston, Polo and Oregon collected trees curbside for residents in their respective areas and collected around 100 trees that morning and

LOCAL NEWS Tri-County Opportunities Council offers 2022 scholarships ROCK FALLS – At least 12 scholarships will be awarded by Tri-County Opportunities Council to income-eligible students residing in the agency’s service area.

The scholarships are worth up to $1,250 and have been made available by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development (DCEO) through its Community Services Block Grant funds.

To be eligible for the scholarship competition, applicants must be a member of an income-eligible household, must be attending an Illinois accredited post-second-

ary educational institution of higher learning during the fall of 2022, be a resident of Bureau, Carroll, LaSalle, Lee, Marshall, Ogle, Putnam, Stark or Whiteside County in Illinois, and be considered full-time (minimum of 12 semester hours) to qualify for the full $1,250 scholarship.

Part-time students will be considered in the competition, however, scholarship awards will be pro-rated if they are selected as a winner.

The application deadline is March 25.

Ogle County officials and the Byron Park District announced Tuesday that due to an administrative error, 2020 property taxes extended by the Ogle County Clerk on behalf of the Byron Park District, and reflected on tax bills to affected taxpayers sent out in 2021, did not include an extension for the Park District’s duly adopted and certified 2020 levy for bond and interest purposes in the total amount of $479,912.

As a result, Byron Park District taxpayers owe an arrearage of 2020 taxes in that total amount, a Feb. 15 news release said.

“Pertinent provisions of state law require that this arrearage of 2020 taxes for bond and interest purposes be added to and listed separately on tax bills for 2021, which will be due in two equal installments in June and September, 2022,” the release said.

“If the Park District’s 2020 levy for bond and interest purposes had been extended and included on the 2020 tax year bill, the corresponding additional tax rate would have been $.00261. For a residential property having a fair market value of $100,000 and a 2020 equalized assessed valuation or EAV of $33,333 or 33% of market value, this rate would have resulted in taxes of approximately $86.99.

“However, the omitted 2020 bond and interest levy will be extended against the 2021 EAV of property subject to the levy. Therefore, the rate extended for the arrearage and the resulting amount of tax shown on individual bills will vary somewhat from those which have resulted had the Park District’s bond and interest levy been extended and included on 2020 tax bills,” the release said.

For four local wrestlers, they did just that at Saturday’s Class 1A Princeton Sectional, and achieved their season-long goal of qualifying for the IHSA state tournament.

Polo’s Wyatt Doty placed second and teammate Daniel Engel took third to earn trips to State Farm Center in Champaign this weekend.

Doty was runner-up at 126 pounds. He defeated Princeton’s Matt Harris 9-2 in the semifinals, but fell to Dakota’s Phoenix Blakely via pin in 3:42 in the title bout.

“I just attacked,” said Doty, who ate granola bars and drank Pedialyte to stay fueled up between matches. “Wrestling Matt, I knew he goes for big moves, so I was kind of distant in the semifinal. Then Blakely, he’s pretty good, he beat me last week. He kind of knew what I was doing because I took in his leg last time, and he kind of blocked that by going 2-on-1 on my arm and doing shucks.”

Doty said he’ll be ready for state after he gets in some more work this week.

Engel took third at 285, locking up in an exciting third-place bout with Erie-Prophetstown’s Elijah Friedrichsen. The final match of the day, it was scoreless until Engel scored a takedown with 38 seconds left.

After Friedrichsen escaped right away to make it 2-1 with 35 seconds to go, Engel scored another takedown and got a pair of back points in the final three

seconds for a 6-1 decision in the battle of senior heavyweights.

“He pushed me into the table, and I got a little upset. I just came back strong,” said Engel, who won a 7-2 decision over Plano’s Alex Diaz in the consolation semifinal to earn his state berth. “I just went out to try and take people down, just used patience waiting for them to act first so I can react to what they’re doing.”

By RANDY HOLLAND The Oregon Hawks sent four wrestlers to the IHSA Princeton Individual Sectional on Feb. 11-12 and two will move on the state championships in Champaign starting Thursday.

Lane Halverson at 132 and Seth Stevens at 138 both finished fourth to qualify for the finals.

In addition, Elizabeth Ruter and Anna Marquardt traveled to the Naperville Central Sectional to compete in the first-ever IHSA girls state series, and Ruter finished fourth and will compete in the state championships in two weeks.

Competing against wrestlers from schools in all three classes, Marquardt was pinned in her opener by the eventual champion. She got a first-minute pin in the first round of consolation but lost her next match.

Ruter had a bye, was pinned at 1:40 in her first match and was pinned by the eventual champion in the semifinal. She pinned in the first period of the wrestleback semifinal and was defeated 8-2 in the third-place match.

On the boys side, regional champion Preston LeBay got a bye to the 113-pound quarterfinals where he took an 8-4 decision to reach the semifinal. Halverson and Stevens also reached the round of four.

dle in the second period. The score tightened when he lost an escape and takedown in the third, but he got away and got another takedown to the back, this time with a half nelson to pin at 5:42.

In the quarterfinal, he again lost the first takedown and came back with a second-period escape and a takedown to the back in a headlock to pin Evan Fraser of Sandwich at 2:41.

Stevens picked up a couple of penalty points and escaped and scored a single leg takedown in the second period to take a 5-0 lead in his first match.

Another takedown in the third and a tough ride gave him a 7-0 win over Austin Fratzke of Sherrard.

In the quarterfinal, Stevens lost two takedowns in the first period and came back with an escape and a

spinning takedown before he scraped into cradle at 3:47.

Gabe Eckerd scraped into a half nelson at 1:04 in his first match. Against second-place finisher Alex Watson of Riverdale in the quarterfinal, Gabe was on his back in a chicken wing in the first period and lost a reverse and a takedown in the second.

Trailing by seven, he got a takedown and tried a desperation monkey roll late and ended up on his back and was pinned at 5:44. Eckerd went to the second round of wrestlebacks where he took Austin Alonso of Rockford Boylan in a cradle in 20 seconds to advance to the third round of consolation.

Against Bailey Livdahl of Harvard in the quarterfinal, Eckerd started with a strong takedown but lost a reveres and a two point chicken wing late in the first and trailed 5-2 in the third when he lost a takedown in a wizzer and was turned with a chicken wing at 5:15. Livdahl went on to take third place as Eckerd dropped from the tournament.

The semifinals were unkind to the Hawks. LeBay never really got rolling in his, losing four takedowns in the first period to eventual runner-up Kaden Harman of Woodstock Marian.

Preston had three escapes and a reverse in the first, but only managed to add one penalty point in the last two periods as Harman scored a reverse, another takedown, and added three points with a chicken wing to take a 13-5 major decision and drop LeBay to the other side of the bracket.

“It was just a constant fight,” Polo coach Emily Petraski said. “The girls play with heart. They had to work hard and kept fighting. They didn’t give up.”

The Timberwolves (14-16) shot 2 of 21 from the floor as the Marcos (14-14) scored the first 10 points of the game and led 16-6 after one quarter.

It capped an 8-0 run that put IC ahead 29-28, but the Marcos scored the next nine to open back up a 37-29 lead with 6:40 left in the fourth after a bucket by Maddi Jones, who finished with five points.

Petroski said it was huge the way her team handled the Indian Creek runs that were fueled by an increased press.

“We controlled the tempo,” Petraski said. “They got a lead on us and we just calmed it down and did our thing. When we took the lead we held the ball. We didn’t rush. We didn’t

A takedown to the back with a minute left in the match sealed a 9-2 win for the Dakota senior.

Thirty-six teams sent representatives to the IHSA Princeton Individual Sectional on Friday and Saturday and 23 teams advanced wrestlers to the

IHSA Individual State Championships starting on Thursday and running through Saturday.

Seven of those teams send just one qualifier and another six, including Oregon and Polo advance two wrestlers. Dakota lead all teams, advancing five of their six sectional qualifiers and winning all five of their medal round matches to take three championships and two third places.

Scales Mound vs. Chicago Leo did not disappoint

O

ne of my favorite sporting events of the years is the 1A wrestling sectional and for the first time in past 20 years, I sat it out. Instead, I spent Saturday afternoon in Shabbona, watching Scales Mound play Chicago Leo at the Indian Creek basketball shootout.

I couldn’t resist the opportunity to see the No 1 team in 1A against the No. 1 in 2A, besides the sidebars of rural versus big city, and different styles of play.

On the way down, I wondered if I made the wrong decision. What if Scales Mound folded under the pressure and it was a big blowout win by Leo, who was undefeated in conference play against large schools such as St. Rita, Loyola Academy and Brother Rice.

On its résumé, Scales Mound had a win over tiny Stockton the night before. It can be a shock to the system all of a sudden going against an opponent you are unaccustomed to.

And one that can jump higher and run faster.

That was what Scales Mound and its large fan presence at Indian Creek faced and to my great pleasure, the Hornets did not blink at all.

From the opening tip off until the final buzzer, the Hornets went toe-totoe with Leo, only losing 55-50. Had SM’s big man Ben Werner not sat out with three fouls early in the second quarter, it may have been a different outcome.

No matter who was on the court for them, Scales Mound was able to handle the full court press and continually attacked the basket on the other end.

“We play fearless and don’t get nervous,” Scales Mound coach Erik Kudronowicz told me afterward. “These kids have been playing varsity for four years.”

After seeing them against Polo earlier in the week, I had my doubts. Sure, they played well as a unit, but how would that translate against Leo? Any questions I had on execution went out the window as they performed just as flawlessly against Leo as they did against Polo. As a fan of basketball fundamentals, it was a joy to see it being exercised at such a high level.

Anymore, that is rare in the highschool game.

There is always the story outside the game and this one concerned the cultural divide between the two schools. Like any football or basketball games I’ve covered between Chicago schools and our locals, it was an overwhelming Scales Mound crowd and a scant few for Leo. There were eight games being played in the Indian Creek gym that day and Scales Mound certainly brought the largest crowd, though they were the smallest town and had a 2-hour drive to get to Shabbona.

With a lot of racial tension in this country, it was also neat to see how well both teams got along.

“There was a ton of respect shown and no trash talking,” SM’s Ben Vandigo said.

As the Hornet fans exited the bleachers, many of them made a point to congratulate Leo coach Jamal Thompson on the win and wish him well in the state tournament.

Yes, there was true racial harmony between these two unlikely protagonists. Maybe there is hope for us as a country.

On a side note, I was surprised to run into former Rochelle and AFC coach Russ Zick at the game, but I had forgotten he got his start at Scales Mound.

Zick was 3-19 in his first season in 1980-81, but gave Scales Mound its first-ever regional title three years later, before finishing his career as the 44th winning coach all time in Illinois with more than 600 victories.

Boes and Snodgrass were transported to local hospitals for serious injuries. Boes passed away and as of Monday Snodgrass remained in serious condition. The Byron Fire Protection District, Stillman Fire Protection District and Mercyhealth REACT Helicopter assisted. The crash remains under investigation.

Feb. 9 Janeth Morales, 18, of Rockford, was arrested at 5:39 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 7000 block of Illinois Route 251 for a speeding. Morales

The basketball season came to an end for the Oregon girls basketball team on Monday with a 78-21 loss to Winnebago in a 2A semifinal regional round.

The result wasn’t totally unexpected after falling to the Indians by a similar score of 70-22 earlier in the year.

“Winnebago absolutely deserves everything they get,” Oregon coach Olyvia Rand. “We tried.”

Hadley Lutz put in a 3-pointer on Oregon’s fourth possession after three quick turnovers to pull the Hawks to within 6-3. Later in the first quarter, the 5-foot-7 junior nailed another trey to keep it a 10-point differential.

Winnebago (28-2) closed out the first quarter with a 22-6 advantage and then scored the next 15 points of the second quarter.

Lutz gave Oregon its final points of the first half with another 3 as ’Bago took a 44-11 lead. The stat sheet verified that wide disparity, as Oregon had 17 first-half turnovers to only three for

’Bago.

The Indians had a 14-7 rebounding advantage and limited Oregon to only 10 field-goal attempts.

With a 63-19 score after three quarters, a running clock went into effect for the rest of the game. Still, Rand had reason for optimism.

“We have a good set of juniors (Ava Hackman, Katelyn Bowers, Marian Drake, Liz Mois and Lutz),” the firstyear coach said. “We’re going to work them a ton over the summer.”

To reach the semifinal, Oregon traveled to Port Byron and beat higher-seeded Riverdale 42-35. The Hawks finished the season with an 8-23 record and 1-8 in conference.

“The girls are willing to do anything asked of them. We will be rebuilding,” Rand said.

Dakota 26, Forreston 17: Dakota outpaced the Cardinals 11-4 in the second half to secure the regional quarterfinal win at home.

Rylee Broshous led Forreston with five points and six steals, while Alaina Miller and Kailey Sanders added three points each.

Oregon’s Ava Wight rolled a 1,297 six-game series to finish fifth overall at the Belvidere Sectional and earn a spot at this weekend’s IHSA state meet.

Wight bowled games of 212, 160 and 224 in the morning, and sat in 22nd place after the second game.

She had games of 258, 255 and 188 for an afternoon 701, moving up to grab the second qualifying spot among individuals not on advancing teams.
