azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS — The business side of downtown Mt. Morris could be getting a makeover in the not-so-distant future if the village is awarded a state grant.

Mt. Morris is seeking $1.8 million from the Rebuild Illinois Main Street and Downtown Capital program and plans to commit $100,000 of its own funds for the streetscape project, village President Phil Labash said at the Jan. 11 village board meeting.

“We’ve invested a lot of time and effort on the campus side,” Labash said. “The reality is, I would like to see a similar investment on the business side of the street.”

The proposed project calls for redoing the roads, water and sewer lines, curbs and gutters and looking to extend street lighting past the Mt. Morris Senior Center toward the library, he said. They also want to include sidewalk improvements, such as widening the sidewalk on the business side of the street, doing some decorative inlays and adding trees and planters that would tie in with the

The Rebuild Illinois Main Street and Downtown Capital program is part of $1.5 billion authorized by the state’s fiscal year 2022 budget to help jump-start economic recovery from COVID-19, according to a Sept. 10 press release from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. DCEO oversees the grant.

“The goal of this project is to drive investment in infrastructure and public amenities that will invite more people back into Main Street districts, and

local city centers,” the press release reads.

There are $50 millions available and grant amounts can range from $250,000 to $3 million, said Corey Buck, vice president and general manager of Willett, Hofmann & Associates’ Sterling office.

“Our grant is right in the middle at about $2 million,” said Buck, who assisted the village in the grant application process. “The reason that the village decided to chip in $100,000 is that, while there is no matching

requirement, you’re looked favorably upon if you match a little bit. So we put in 5% of the project.”

Grant applications were due Jan. 10, he said. They were told it will be about three months before winners are announced, Buck said.

“If we get this grant, I believe it would be transformative to our downtown,” Labash said.

“We know we’ve got expansion happening in our downtown,” he added.

“We’ve spent or committed almost $700,000 in TIF [tax increment finance] funds to redevelopment of our downtown. Almost every active business in the downtown has applied for and received some type of TIF grant, and that is resulting in a lot of improvements happening with the buildings downtown.”

Some of those improvements are visible and some are more behind-thescenes type things, like putting new roofs on a building, Labash said.

“This would be our commitment as a village to the downtown business district saying, ‘We’re there. We get it and we support the work that you’re doing,’” he said.

Antique show plans to be back after 2-year hiatus The Oregon Woman’s Club’s Antique Show will be back in business this March following a two-year, Covid-caused hiatus.

The popular show will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27 at the Blackhawk Center, 1101 W. Jefferson St. in Oregon. The show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

More than 40 vendors have reserved spaces to show their wares. Popular features will be back as well including crystal and china repair both days and antique appraisals on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a charge of $5 per item.

There will also be door prizes, concessions, and plenty of free parking.

The Blackhawk Center is handicap-ac-

cessible. Admission is $6 per person at the door.

“The club members are excited about the return of the antique fair this year. The fair is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and not being able to hold it has made it hard to support a number of local service organizations the way the club would like They are hoping to see their regular visitors and plenty of first-timers too,” said Nancy Bartels, club member.

Since 1922, the Oregon Woman’s Club has been lending a hand to support numerous community-centered organizations from the VFW and the Friends of the Library to Serenity House, Hope of Ogle County, Winning Wheels, and the Rock River Center.

n1836, Lincoln our 16 th President, spoke in Oregon. In 1932 Gov. Roosevelt was running for President and on July, 1932, he gave a campaign speech for President of the United States from the back of his private railroad car at the Oregon Depot.

Roosevelt’s friend Governor Lowden met him at the depot. Governor Lowden was a Republican and Governor Roosevelt a Democrat from New York.

Chloe Gale, an Oregon High School graduate, used this newspaper photo to paint a wonderful painting of Roosevelt and Lowden. Come to the depot and see Chloe’s painting of Republican Gov. Frank Lowden and Democrat Presidential Candidate New York Governor Roosevelt at the Oregon Depot.

This is a nice addition to our Pullman collection at the depot.

At this time Roosevelt used a cane. He contracted polio in 1921. (Lincoln was our 16th President (18611865) and Roosevelt was our 32 nd President (19331941).

I wonder how many towns and cities in the U. S. can say Lincoln and Roosevelt spoke in their town?

When our station agent was notified of this campaign stop at the Oregon Depot, R. L. Sharick sent Governor Roosevelt a Western Union message asking if his two sons Chester and Horace could ride with him in his private car from Savanna to Oregon.

People learned how to live with the seasons 100 years ago

T

his morning I got up to see that we had another little “skiff of snow” and I thought, darn since I have to get out. People are coming to the museum and this could present a problem. These days I really like to hunker down in my house and watch the outside from my window, This week when my latest issue of The Vermont Country Store arrived I enjoyed the comments as I opened the catalog and saw the article entitled “Living With The Seasons.” I am not certain who writes this but this time they were commenting on the winter season in Vermont.

Some areas of Vermont still show the area as it was 100 years ago and many people who travel through ask, “How did they fight the winters?” The answer was that they did not fight with the cold weather and snow, they simply went along with what was given them.

Plowing snow and removing it with end loaders took much time and energy. Instead, they got out big rollers and packed down the snow. Then they brought out their sleighs and away they went. Business went on as it

They also kept warm with their fireplaces and really burned wood in them. Fireplaces were in the center of the house where they did their cooking. Winter was the time to cut firewood since there was no sap in the wood at that time of season and one could burn it right away.

Ice blocks were cut in the winter and stored in the basement of some houses and that kept your house cool in the summer. Remember the ice houses in the community and the iceman that went around in the summer filling the ice boxes in the summer kitchens?

I remember the sign that my grandmother hung out to tell the iceman how much ice she needed that day.

Also, ice picks were used to chip off a

certain amount of ice that the housewife might need. That was a kitchen tool.

This was called “living with the seasons” according to the author or writer in that particular article. He went on to say that today energy is cheap and we spend all of our time attempting to live in the winter as if it were summer.

Will our energy always be cheap or will we someday need to think of living with the seasons again?

We do have a sleigh at the museum that I probably could park in my driveway, but the horse could be a problem.

I do remember as a child going by bobsled and horses back to the farm at my grandparents one Thanksgiving when the side road was closed. I was lifted as a little girl from the warm car to the bobsled to be placed under robes of fur. It was an interesting ride back to the house where my grandmother was waiting. I have never forgotten it.

It was also my grandfather who had to hitch up the horses to the bobsled and head out to the main road where we were waiting. Today I am content to back my car out of the garage and hope the sidewalk is clear at the

museum rather than hitch up the sleigh near my door.

As I finish this column I will reflect back on the morning at the museum.

The sidewalk was fine as I greeted Walt Schryver’s family. It was nice to meet his son, daughter, and see again his wife, Delores Engle Schryver.

It was good to see her and she was lovely in her purple suit with her white hair. The family enjoyed the museum, taking pictures of the Schryver collection of Native American artifacts, and taking pictures of Eldon Engle’s Purple Heart and citation I even managed to get the case unlocked and locked back up again.

Then we all left, I got my walker into the trunk of the car, and I headed home.

It had been a good day until I got the call from Bill Warren that niece “Cookie” had died that morning and our world came crashing down in our family. Life changes in a hurry.

New interim coach named for OHS basketball team Jarrett Reynolds replaces Nathan Green after mid-season resignation

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Oregon High School’s head basketball coach resigned last week following accusations from a parent who said his son quit the team in December because of “degrading comments” and a “toxic” environment.

Nathan Green, a second-year coach who is employed outside the district, resigned immediately, said OHS Athletic Director Mike Lawton.

In an email to parents, Lawton said assistant JV coach, Jarrett Reynolds, who is a teacher within the Oregon School District, will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

“While we know a leadership change can be challenging, we are confident that Coach Reynolds and the rest of the coaching staff will do everything in their power to ensure our student athletes have the best end of their

season possible,” the email said.

Green’s resignation followed comments by a parent during the December and January board meetings.

“I am here to reiterate my family’s concerns with the current state of the OCUSD Athletic Department,” said Seth Gelander of Oregon at the Jan. 18 meeting. “Last month we shared our experience with the OHS basketball program and made the board aware of physical and emotional abuse that our son endured during his time with the program. We again were disappointed that the outcome of the initial investigation by the athletic director regarding this complaint was determined to be unfounded.”

Gelander asked the school board to take action for the “safety of students in all settings”.

In December, Gelander told the board that his son, Joey a senior, had recently quit the basketball program because of degrading comments made by the head coach about the team’s performance.

“Once he [Joey] explained all of the issues to us, it became clear that he needed to remove himself from that

the sport he loves” in order to maintain a “healthy mental status and move forward free of abuse”.

He told the board that “this type of behavior” would not be tolerated in a classroom from a teacher and should not be tolerated from a coach.

“Since the time of the last board meeting multiple events have occurred that have made the situation more worrisome,” Gelander said on Jan. 18 citing cyberbullying on social media in retaliation against a former player. “It is clear to an objective eye, that the complaint process and procedure is well constructed to protect the coach, the athletic department, and the school. There is only one problem, where does that leave the student athlete in this process?”

Board members typically do not respond to comments made during the public comment period of school board meetings.

After the December meeting, Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney declined to comment on Gelander’s statements or accusations and none of the coaches or Lawton were present at the meeting.

The Byron Museum of History will host the Eagle’s Nest Art Group wintertime art show. The show will begin with an Opening Reception on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m.

Artists will be on hand to welcome visitors. The art will remain on display through Saturday, March 25. The museum, located at 110 N. Union Street in Byron, is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The museum’s exhibits and the 2-month long art show are open to the public free of charge.

This year’s Eagle’s Nest Art Group show features oil, watercolor, and acrylic paintings as well as photography and 3-D art. It will be an extensive show of the work of local artists from Oregon, Byron, Rock Falls, Dixon, Forreston, Mt. Morris, Ashton, and Pearl City.

ENAG, founded in 1957, has a full schedule of art events, workshops and shows and will have materials available at the Museum for all who are

interested in learning more about this community of artists and its activities.

Oregon’s Isaac Kaltenbrun used a huge final game at the Hononegah Sectional on Jan. 22 to bowl his way into the IHSA state meet this weekend in O’Fallon, becoming the third Hawk to qualify for state twice in a career.

Kaltenbrun was 80 pins out of the final individual advancing spot heading into his sixth game, and proceeded to roll a 266 to make up the deficit.

He finished with a six-game pinfall of 1,281, good for 12th place overall, and the seventh and final advancing spot for individuals.

Kaltenbrun opened the day with games of 245 and 218 in a morning-session 646 series, and finished with a 635 afternoon series after his monster sixth game.

He was the only local to qualify for state.

Sterling’s Andrew Doughty finished with a 1,265 six-game series, good for 16th overall, but eighth among individuals not on the top six advancing teams. He had a huge morning series, rolling games of 222, 226 and 248 for a 696, and rolled a 569 series in the afternoon, with a 225 second game.

Oregon’s other bowler at the sectional was Brandon Rowe, and he finished with a 1,011 six-game series. He ended on a high note, rolling a 203 game in the finale.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Michael Miner bowled a 1,068, closing his season with games of 211 and 200 to end the afternoon session.

Dixon had a pair of freshman bowl as individuals. David Laird rolled a 980 series with a 192 high game, and Cody Geil had a 968 series with a 193 high game.

Harlem led the whole way and won the team title with a 6,516. Belvidere North was second (6,147) and Freeport took third (6,036), while Hononegah (5,939), Huntley (5,910) and South Elgin (5,880) grabbed the other three qualifying spots.

Lakes senior Phillip Heuser won the individual title with a 1,385, bowling games of 224, 224 and 245 in the morning, then 245, 255 and 192 in the afternoon. Hononegah’s Charlie Hunt was runner-up (1,361), and Harlem’s Eric Roberts took third (1,347).

Ava Wight opened her dual-high 567 series with a 212 first game to lead Oregon (9-4).

Kendra Ehrler (478), Trinity Hultquist (451), Mackenzie Alford (438) and Paige Beauchem (429) also bowled for the Hawks.

Oregon 2,485, Rochelle 2,416: The Hawks won two of the three games in a dual against the Hubs to claim a close victory on the road.

Ava Wight’s 509 series led Oregon, while Mackenzie Alford added a 474, and Paige Beauchem had a 439. Kendra Ehrler (408), Trinity Hultquist (367) and Kylie Krug (288) also competed for the Hawks.

Cassidy Vincent led Rochelle with a dual-high 544 series and 212 game, with Anna Samo adding a 471 series, and Faith Adams rolling a 438.

Boys basketball Warren 64, Oregon 30: The Hawks were outscored 18-1 in the second quarter of a nonconference loss to the Warriors at the Blackhawk Center.

Nathan Bell had 11 points to pace Oregon,

and Carter Marlatt and Isaac Reber finished with five points apiece.

Brayden Bohnsack scored 17 points for Warren, with Michael Neff adding 13, Tyler VenHuizen finishing with 11, and Reed McNutt chipping in 10.

Winnebago 66, Forreston 34: The Cardinals trailed 22-13 after the opening quarter and 45-21 by halftime, then were outscored 18-4 in the third quarter in a nonconference road loss.

Tommy Appel had 10 points for Forreston (5-12), and Dylan Greenfield finished with five.

Carl Firch scored 25 points for Winnebago, and Ray Maurchie added 17.

Byron 60, Oregon 20: The Hawks trailed 21-0 after the opening quarter in a Big Northern loss at the Blackhawk Center.

Anthony Bell had six points to pace Oregon (2-8, 0-4 BNC), as eight different Hawks scored.

Nick Kesler scored 16 points, and Ryan Tucker finished with 14 to lead Byron (6-8, 2-2).

Milledgeville 53, Polo 37: The Missiles jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the opening quarter en route to an NUIC South victory over the rival Marcos in Milledgeville.

Kieren Harris poured in 20 points to lead Milledgeville, and Kacen Johnson and Connor Nye added 10 points each. Bryce Aude scored six, and Izaac Toms-Smith chipped in five.

Brock Soltow, Carter Merdian and Kahlil Sankey scored nine points apiece for Polo.

Tyler Merdian added six points, and Cooper Blake scored four.

Polo 37, Forreston 33: The Cardinals claimed a 29-25 lead after three quarters, but the Marcos battled back with a 12-4 run to close out the win.

Carter Merdian paced Polo with 11 points, while Tyler Merdian added eight points.

No mystery as to why pro football has high ratings

W

ith all the excitement generated by four nail-biting finishes in last weekend’s NFL divisional playoffs, its no mystery as to why pro football has the highest ratings in television.

Social media was abuzz with people of all colors, sexes, religions, ages, and political affiliations, etc. showering praise on the games.

Though each team’s fan base has its own rooting interest, the sport of football is one of the few things left in this country that is universally loved.

The quality of play has never been better, though, many of us oldtimers complained that the game had gotten too soft because of rule changes. It became more like touch football, we said.

We were wrong.

Coaches and players have adapted to the new rules designed to protect a player’s safety. It is faster, more precision-based product and extremely scintillating to watch. The Chiefs-Bills game was a perfect example of that.

Lately, team owners have been chastised for not hiring more minority coaches. Like the quarterback situation, it has taken a long time for ‘people of color’ to even be considered.

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert Critics of NFL hiring practices have said minorities don’t have the same chances of whites because of nepotism and favoritism practiced by those entrenched in high-level positions on NFL teams.

I can’t disagree with that, as that is often the case in many other businesses.

However, professional sports are not affirmative action. Unlike most other occupations, a coach’s performance is based primarily on won/loss record.

No matter how prej udiced or entrenched an owner might be, winning is the most important element to them. It is survival of the fittest in the coaching world. Just ask Matt Nagy how brutal it can be. How the Bears treated him is no different than when Lovie Smith was fired.

Prejudices even apply to women wanting a place at the table instead of

being the ones waiting on those at the table. Decades ago, sexism was alive and well in pro football with the subservient role females engaged in as cheerleaders.

Remember the Chicago Honey Bears from the 1970s and 80s, started

by George Halas as a means to have dancing girls on the sidelines. Once George died, his daughter Virginia put an end to the practice, calling it degrading to women.

Nearly 40 years later, small steps are being made with women refereeing, working in front offices and even coaching. Interest in football among women has never been higher, so it makes sense that they be considered for jobs in that field.

Chicago sports media lost a beloved character in the untimely death of Les Grobstein, a sports commentator and overnight host of WSCR radio. Grobstein spent 52 years covering the games he loved and was a walking encyclopedia on everything Chicago sports, including such arcane topics as the Honey Bears.

He was a quirky guy with oneminded focus on sports, usually making himself the fodder for incessant teasing by the radio DJs he worked

with.

About 20 years ago, I pre-arranged a meeting with Les after the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay. The Bears weren’t even at that particular game, but Les made it a point to be at whatever sports events he could finagle a press pass for.

I wasn’t there for the game, just traveling through Florida at the time and decided to interview him for my weekly column at the Dixon Telegraph.

Since he did the graveyard shift, it was just him and I and a security guard on what’s called Radio Row, an area near the stadium that stations set up to do their shows. I wish I could remember what we talked about that night, but the only thing that comes to mind is his disheleved appearance and problems with migraine headaches.

With all the travel and long strange hours, that had to be a grind for him.

When he died, no cause of death was given, though he hadn’t been feeling well for a couple weeks. I wonder if he died from overworking?

Kylie Smither led Fulton with eight points and eight rebounds, Resse Germann scored six, and Miraya Pessman went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Wilson finished with five points for the Steamers, who trailed 7-4 after the opening quarter, but took a 13-12 lead into halftime, then extended it to 20-18 through three quarters.

Brooke Boettner had 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals, two assists and two blocks for Forreston. Keeli Larson added two points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks, Letrese Buisker finished with two points and eight rebounds, and Nevaeh Houston chipped in three points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jenna Greenfield finished with two points, three rebounds and four steals for the Cardinals.

Wrestling Polo 2-1 in Princeton: The Marcos defeated North Boone 72-6 and Somonauk 63-6, but lost to the host Tigers 40-27 in a quadrangular.

Wyatt Doty won three matches at 126 pounds for Polo, taking two by pin and one by decision. Lucas Nelson (132) won a pair of contested bouts, both by pin.

Polo 72, Amboy 6: The Marcos won six contested matches and received seven forfeits to win 13 out of 14 matches to defeat the Clippers.

At 120, Polo’s Gage Lagee pinned Levi Neer in 4:58; at 152, Nicholas Cain pinned Dan Beran in 1:20; and at 160, Braydon Altherr pinned Lucas Blanton in 4:56.

In the 195-pound bout, Hayden Maddux earned victory by pin over Caleb Shugars in 13 seconds. At 220, Blake Diehl pinned Kole Beckham in 16 seconds. At 220, Wayde Reimer pinned Kole Beckham in 17 seconds.

Dylan Daniels (145) got the only Amboy win by forfeit.

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Hawk wrestlers hosted three BNC rivals and won two of the three meets. Top ranked Dixon rode three forfeits to prevail 45-33 on Jan. 18 and Oregon notched seven forfeits to drop Winnebago 45-18. On Jan. 20, the Hawks scored five pins and added two forfeits to roll over North Boone 51-17.

Oregon outscored the Dukes 33-27 on the mat, but the 18 free points put the Hawks in the loss column. The Hawks had four pins in the meet. Preston Labay scraped at 1:38. Ethan Mowry trailed 12-2 when he scored a takedown in a cradle at 5:35. Anthony Bauer caught a half nelson at 3:15, and Evan Flaharty drove his opponent down in a half nelson at 1:32.

Seth Stevens added six when he collected four stalling points, good for a disqualification. Gabe Eckerd weathered a late escape and held on to win 6-4.

In a hard fought loss, Ethan George couldn’t escape in the third to go down 3-1. Dalton McCammon was caught in a spladle, Landen Elder was pinned in a half nelson, Elijah George lost a hip toss at 3:32, and Andrew Young went down in a half nelson at 1:34.

Against ‘Bago, Anna Marquardt, Jared Glendenning, Stevens, Bauer, Eckerd, Seth Rote, and Flaharty won by forfeit. Labay scored a reverse and picked up a penalty point in the third period to win 7-5. Ethan George got reversed to his back at 2:19, Elder was pinned in a turk at 1:25, and Young was pinned in a half nelson at 1:29.

Young scored a takedown with a minute left to ice a 7-3 win. The rest of the Hawk wins were by fall. Lane Halvorson posted an arm at 1:25, Bauer led 10-2 when he got a takedown in a cradle at 2:38, and Eckerd threw in a half nelson after a takedown at 2:40. Rote went out front with a half nelson at 2:30 and Flaharty took an arm over at 3:43.

Six medalists at LeRoy Nine Hawk wrestlers took a trip down I-55 and east on I-74 to participate in the Randy Bowman Invitational in LeRoy on Jan. 23. Six came home with medals, led by runner-up Evan Flaharty at 285. Seth Stevens at 138, Gabe Eckerd at 160, and Andrew Young at 195 took third place. Anthony Bauer was

fourth at 145, and Ethan George was fifth at 170.

Griffin Marlatt pinned once and took a 9-0 major decision but dropped out of the tournament in the consolation semifinal. Lane Halvorson opened with a pin and lost the next two to go out in the wrestleback quarterfinal. Collin Winterland also started with a fall, lost by a fall and his tournament ended in the consolation semifinal with a 19-13 loss.

Flaharty had a takedown to the back before he pinned in a half nelson at 3:01 in his opener. He reversed and picked up four stalling points in the third period to win the semifinal 8-6. He was pinned in a butcher at 1:26 in the championship match.

Stevens ran a half nelson at 4:06 and pinned with a cradle at 1:22 before he lost 11-4 in the semifinal. He stacked with a chicken wing at 1:48 in the third place match. Eckerd pulled a chicken wing back in 53 seconds and scraped in 40 seconds to reach the semifinal where he lost 10-2 to the eventual champion.

On the third place mat, he went to the turk at 1:36. Young ran a wing at 2:43 in his opener, lost an escape and a takedown in a cradle in the second period of the semifinal, and stepped over into a half nelson in 17 seconds in the third place match.

Bauer pulled a chicken wing back in is opener. Bauer was on his back three times in a 15-0 technical fall loss in the semifinal. He had a reverse to the back in the third period of the third place match, but it wasn’t enough in a 13-10 loss.

George lost a late takedown to his back in an 8-5 opening round loss. He pinned his way through the wrestlebacks with a cradle, a half nelson and a turk at 4:39 in the fifth place match.

BRIEFS DAR seeks entries for scholarships; deadline Jan. 31

The Rochelle Chapter, of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is seeking entries for scholarship contests. Entries can be submitted from regional public, private, parochial, or home-schooled students. No DAR affiliation is required.

“A very important part of the DAR is promoting education. Each year, Illinois Daughters award college scholarships. These are limited to students who are U.S. citizens, graduating seniors from high school, and those who will attend colleges or universities in Illinois (two-year junior colleges and four-year institutions). To qualify for the Illinois State Scholarships, a student’s financial need and academic consideration are both factors,” said Lydia Roberts.

Rochelle Chapter will sponsor one high school senior for a $1000 general scholarship competition, as well as one high school senior for the General Henry Dearborn American History Scholarship at the state level.

The General Henry Dearborn History Scholarship has no financial need compo-

nent but is for a student interested in pursuing a career in some phase of history.

Anhydrous ammonia certified grower training is March 9

Illinois growers and grower farm operators who transport or apply anhydrous ammonia, or otherwise maintain anhydrous ammonia

equipment, are now required by state regulation (8 IAC 215) to complete certified grower training.

Growers and grower farm operators have until April 1, to be initially certified and must participate in refresher training every three years.

The certification includes all individuals employed by or otherwise authorized by a grower to transport or apply anhydrous ammonia, or maintain anhydrous ammonia equipment.

The Ogle County Farm Bureau in cooperation with Carroll Service Company will host an in-person training program on March 9, at the Ogle County Farm Bureau Building, in Oregon.

Two sessions will be offered. The first session will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at noon; the second session will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. Both will be held on March 9.Each session is limited to the first 30 people who register. Registration is required!

TRAGIC ACCIDENT

A Sterling man accused in a fatal weekend crash that killed a pedestrian and injured a police officer pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of driving under the influence.

Wayne A. Witt Jr., 46, is charged with two counts of aggravated DUI resulting in death, each of which carries a mandatory minimum of 3 to 14 years in prison, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Witt is in Whiteside County jail on $250,000 bond after today’s arraignment and bond hearing. Witt said he intends to hire private counsel.

His preliminary hearing is Feb. 7.

Witt is accused of hitting and killing Drew A. Barger, 35, of Sterling, Sunday morning on First Avenue Bridge, just south of Wallace Street, as Barger was being questioned by Ster- Wayne A. Witt Jr. ling police officer Travis Nease.

Barger was walking down the middle of the road around 12:40 a.m. when Nease parked in the southbound lane of the bridge, emergency lights activated, and got out of the squad car to talk to him, Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker said in a news release.

Nease was standing by the rear of

the car talking to Barger when Witt’s northbound pickup crossed the centerline, striking Nease and the squad car, and trapping Barger under the truck. The truck then continued on, crashing into the viaduct center support, the release said.

Barger died at the scene.

Nease was treated at CGH Medical Center and released.

The bridge was closed from Second Street in Sterling to Second Street in Rock Falls until about 6:30 a.m.

Because the crash involves one of their officers, Sterling Police requested the Sheriff’s Department investigate, as is standard procedure, to avoid any conflict of interest.

Crash leaves Rochelle man dead, Lindenwood teen injured An 81-year-old man is dead following a Jan. 21 crash north of Rochelle.

George Hall III, of Rochelle, was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle crash, which occurred in the area of Illinois Route 64 and Moore Road around 10:57 a.m., according to Ogle County sheriff’s reports.

An on-scene investigation revealed Hall was driving a Chevrolet Cruze west on Route 64 when he crossed over the center line of the roadway into the eastbound lane, the report reads. Hall struck an eastbound Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck driven by Jacob Hackbarth, 19, of Lindenwood. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, and Hackbarth’s pickup truck overturned, according to the report.

Hackbarth was transported by Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center for minor injuries, the report reads.

Rochelle EMS and the Illinois State Police assisted. The crash remains under investigation.

An investigation showed the driver, Jacqueline Holloway, 59, of Oregon, entered the north ditch when her vehicle overturned. Hollaway was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Hollaway was cited for improper lane usage.

Nicholas Dildine, 27, of Davis Junction, was arrested at 4:22 p.m. for driving on a

suspended license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 7000 block of Illinois Route 251 for a speeding violation. Dildine also was cited for speeding 26-34 mph over the speed limit and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Dildine was released on a signature I-Bond with a return court date.

Jan. 22 A 15-year-old female, of Rockford, was arrested at 4:11 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies stopped her in the 18000 block of Illinois Route 64.
