Recycle your electronics Jan. 27 in Oregon; free permits required in advance
The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will host a residential electronics recycling event on Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 909 Pines Road in Oregon.
This event is for Ogle County residents only and a free permit is required in advance of the event.
To obtain a free permit, call 815-732-4020 or email solidwaste@oglecountyil.gov by 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26.
Accepted items include all televisions and computer monitors, computers, computer hardware and cables, laptops, tablets, cellphones, printers, FAX machines, scanners, shredders (no tubs), copiers, video gaming equipment, DVD/VCRs, cable/satellite boxes, stereo equipment, radios, digital clocks, cameras, calculators, phone systems, holiday light strands, extension cords, rechargeable batteries, printer ink cartridges, CD/ DVDs and CFL bulbs. Microwave ovens are accepted for $5 per unit. Cash or check accepted.
There is a limit of seven large or bulky items per permit and one permit per county household per month.
Business or institutional electronic materials are not accepted at these events.

Plastic Recycling
We are collecting film-type plastic for recycling. This includes plastic bags, zipper type baggies (with the zip portion removed), cereal/snack bags, bubble wrap, and other soft plastic . Please make sure bags are free from debris and remove all paper/sticker labels. We cannot accept hard plastic, such as water bottles, milk cartons, etc., for this program. Thank you!
Mor ing Disposal sells to Republic Ser vices

After 45 years in business, Moring Disposal Inc. sold its operations and land to Republic Services on Dec. 15.
In a joint announcement posted on the Republic website, both companies promised customers a seamless transition and said that customer fees, invoices, payment locations, garbage collection day and customer service phone numbers would remain the same.
Customers also can continue to use their Moring trash and recycling containers. Some will continue to see Moring Disposal trucks picking up their waste.
Moring Disposal always has been a family-owned operation. In a letter sent to some customers, owner Larry Moring said the decision to sell did not come lightly, but he assured customers would continue to receive the same level of service with Republic.
The Arizona-based company purchased the Rock Falls property at 2110 McNeil Road for $964,800 and five parcels of land in Forreston for $749,369.
Both companies declined to discuss the terms of the acquisition.
Republic Services, Inc. became the second-largest nonhazardous solid waste management company in the U.S. after purchasing its larger competitor Allied in 2008 for $6.1 billion.

Moring Disposal was founded in 1977 by Larry Moring of Forreston. Moring started the business with two older garbage trucks and a small trash collection route.
Moring Disposal had facilities in Forreston, Freeport, Lanark and Rock Falls.
According to the moringdisposal.com: “Our company currently serves in excess of 30,000 homes and nearly 4,000 businesses throughout our core seven county service area along with our temporary roll off dumpster rental options in our expanded service area.”
Municipal contracts – numbering more than 20 –included Savanna, Morrison, Oregon, Polo, Lanark and Rock Falls.
Moring Disposal also had a transfer station at 30687 U.S. 52, just east of Lanark. Waste transfer facilities are specialized sites designed to receive, store, process and move waste material from one point to another.
According to Republic’s website, the company operates in 47 states, has 14 million customers, makes 5 million daily pickups and has 71 recycling processing centers.

Judge sets Feb. 15 hearing in 2021 death of Oregon f irst grader

An Oregon woman accused of killing her 7-yearold son in 2021 won’t have to appear in court until February after an Ogle County judge granted a defense request for a continuance.
Sarah Safranek, 35, appeared in Ogle County Court on Dec. 28 via a video conference from the Ogle County Correctional Center.
Safranek has pleaded not guilty to five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery for the suffocation death of her son, Nathaniel Burton, in February 2021.
On Nov. 3, Judge John Redington ruled Safranek was fit to stand trial for the offenses after reviewing a mental health evaluation requested by the defense.
On Wednesday, Ogle County Public Defender Kathleen Isley asked for the continuance, noting that she and another public defender were planning on meeting with Safranek again next week.
Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock did not object to the continuance.
Redington said the hearing would resume at 1 p.m. Feb. 15.

Man arrested for attempted murder on New Year’s Eve

A Byron man was arrested for attempted murder after police say he ran one person over with his vehicle and stabbed another in a Forreston parking lot on New Year’s Eve.
Jeremy G. Jones, 41, of Byron, was arrested for attempted murder, aggravated battery with a motor vehicle, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and improper container/ driver, according to an Ogle County Sheriff’s Office news release. Jones was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
“The early investigation indicates that this was a road rage incident that escalated,” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.
He said there appears to have been “some type of incident” outside Forreston, after which the two victims stopped their vehicle in a parking lot within the village. It was then that Jones attacked the victims, VanVickle said.
VanVickle did not know the health status of the two victims.
The altercation occurred at 10:40 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the 200 block of 1st Avenue (Illinois Route 26) in downtown Forreston, according to the release.

Sheriff: Slippery roads, limited visibility appear to have played role

A Rock Falls woman was killed and a Polo man died on Monday following a crash on Illinois Route 2 just south of Byron early New Year’s Day.
Laurie Griggs, 48, of Rock Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an Ogle County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Terrence Pearse, 62, of Polo, was transported by Byron ambulance to Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford for severe injuries.
Pearse died on Jan. 2, Winnebago Deputy Coroner Mike Smirz said.
“It does appear the weather played a role,” Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.
“It was very slippery and there was extremely limited visibility at the time of the crash.”
There was dense fog and the roads were “covered in ice” at the time of the two-vehicle crash, according to the release.
Pearse was driving a 2016 Toyota Prius and Griggs was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima when the cars collided, according to the release.

The crash occurred at 7:18 a.m. in front of 6645 Route 2 north of Oregon, VanVickle said.
The road was closed for about four hours, reopening at 11 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
