BY JANE KOELLER Forreston Area Business Association Christmas in the Country, sponsored by the Forreston Area Business Association, will officially ring in the holiday season on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8.

The festivities kick off Friday at 9 a.m. with rolls and coffee at First United Methodist Church.

The annual bazaar and Christmas Corner will also be held at the church.

At 11 a.m., the Methodist Church is again the place to be with their lasagna, soup, sandwich, and dessert luncheon.

The luncheon is available until 2 p.m.

While you are in town, stop at the local businesses to sign up for drawings and to enjoy some holiday goodies.

Many of the businesses have extended hours on Friday and will be open until 8 p.m.

The high school and middle school chorus will carol in local businesses and around downtown from 4 to 5 p.m.

They will start at the Forreston State Bank and end at Memorial Park, just in time for the Community Tree Lighting.

The Faith Lutheran Cookie Sale will start at 4 p.m. downtown in the building next to Sweetwood Interiors.

The sale will last until the cookies are gone; but get there early for the best, most delicious selection.

No holiday celebration would be complete without a visit from Santa.

He will arrive at Memorial Park by fire engine and will help with the tree lighting at 5 p.m.

Kids can visit the Jolly Old Elf at the park until 6.

While you are at the park you can enjoy some hot chocolate sponsored by

St. James WELCA to hold candy and bake sale If you would like to deck your cupboards with Christmas goodies this holiday season, be sure to come to the candy and bake sale sponsored by the members of the St. James Lutheran Church WELCA. on Saturday, Dec. 8 beginning at 9 a.m. at Green’s Auto Sales in Forreston.

Candies, cookies, cakes, pies, breads, and snack items will be for sale.

All proceeds are used for local and world-wide mission projects.

Free coffee and hot chocolate will be available for all who come to the sale.

At 6 p.m., Santa will travel by tractor drawn wagon to the Forreston Public Library. He will visit with kids until 7:30.

The library will also provide cookies and hot chocolate.

The Forreston Fire Department invites the public to check out the fire trucks and new ambulance from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Cookies, cocoa, and special drawings will be available.

While you are at the fire station, visit the community room for the “make and take” Christmas activity. Different crafts will be provided for kids and parents to create from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tractor-drawn wagon rides will be available from 6:15 to 8 p.m.

The tractor rides will go in a continual loop from the fire station, to the park, to the grade school parking lot, to the library, and back to the fire station.

The tractor ride will include viewing the “Door Decoration Contestants.”

The Forreston PTO is again hosting the Christmas Extravaganza from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Forreston Grade School.

This is a great opportunity to find that perfect hand crafted item for anyone on your Christmas list.

The Christmas Extravaganza is also open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year marks the “Third Annual Christmas Scavenger Hunt.”

Teams of four or five will compete for “Cardinal Cash” by completing a holiday scavenger hunt.

The “hunt” is Friday night and will

start at 6 p.m. from the Forreston Fire Department.

This is a walking event so teams need to dress appropriately.

Sweetwood Interiors is again sponsoring Christmas Tree Decorating Tips.

The tips will be Friday from 6:30 to 6:45 p.m., and again on Saturday from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Saturday morning picks up right where Friday left off.

Country Financial will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Santa will be available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Bring the kids and get free pictures with Santa.

Light refreshments will also be served.

The St. James Holiday Bake Sale will again be at Green’s Motors from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Salon K will host a Holiday Hair Workshop. The girls at Salon K will demo holiday hairstyles that you can do at home.

Local vendors will be on site. This will run from noon to 4 p.m.

The weekend wraps up with the Community Christmas Concert at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.

This festive event will include local musical groups. The Rock River Valley Barbershop Chorus will be the featured act.

Donations of non-perishable food items and money will be accepted and donated to the New Life Pantry and the Forreston Lions Club for their Christmas boxes.

Firemen rescue 27 people and two kittens

by Forreston Fire Department and EMS personnel after they were stranded in an unseasonably early blizzard last week.

Fire Chief Bob Myers said about a dozen firefighters and EMTs went out during the worst of the storm to rescue

motorists stuck in the 12-14 inches of wet, blowing and drifting snow that fell across Ogle County from the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 25 to the wee hours of the next morning.

“Some firefighters used their own vehicles to get to the people,” he said.

“We put up 17 in our fire station until the next day. The others had friends or relatives they could stay with in town so we took them there.”

Among the rescued were Chad and Andrea Fernandez, their three children, and two kittens.

Andrea’s grandfather Larry Cornelius, of Forreston, said the family left their home in Brodhead, Wisconsin, on Nov. 25 after the furnace quit working and headed for her mother’s home in Shannon.

A Sandwich man was critically injured Dec. 2 when the pick-up truck he was driving was struck by a train southeast of Oregon.

Jeff Pruski, 43, was transported to Mercyhealth Hospital in Rockford in critical but stable condition. A hospital spokesman said he was listed in fair condition on Monday.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Police said the Pruski was stopped facing southbound in the 2400 Rocky Hollow Road just north of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks as the westbound train was approaching.

Pruski then drove around the gate arm, which was working properly, just as the train approached the crossing.

All was well when they left home where no snow at all fell that day.

The trip went smoothly until they got south of Freeport and encountered increasingly heavy snowfall and slippery roads with deep snow.

On Ill. 72 just into the Shannon Fire District, they couldn’t go any further and were stranded in the vehicle for five hours until Forreston firefighters got there.

The terms of the remaining eight county board members were not up for re-election this fall but will also expire in 2020.

Gouker told the board that current

committee assignments will continue through the month of December, with new board members assuming the committee posts held by the person each replaced.

New committee assignments will be announced at the Dec. 18 meeting.

Myers said first rescue came around 5 p.m. Sunday when an elderly man got his car stuck on White Eagle Road. He got out of the car, fell in the snow, and was unable to get up.

“It was almost like a blizzard then,” Myers said. “And it just kept getting worse as the night wore on.

The snow was blowing and drifting and very deep in some places. It was a sheet of ice underneath.”

The fire department went out for the last time with the firetrucks around 2 a.m., he said, because the vehicles simply couldn’t get through the snow.

The rescues continued a while

longer using the brush trucks to get to stranded vehicles and shuttling the people to the department’s new four-wheel drive ambulance for the ride back to the fire station.

But even then, the job wasn’t done.

Department personnel stayed overnight at the fire station to take care of their overnight guests, and the following morning took the people back to their cars and helped dig them out of the snow until around 11 a.m.

“There was a lot of effort put into it,” Myers said. “Our firemen and EMS stepped up and did what needed to be done.”

Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said his department rescued four people who were stranded northwest of Polo on Brookville Road at Canada Road.

Two trucks left the fire station at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and did not return until 11:45 p.m., he said, after both of them got stuck on the way back.

The Mt. Morris and Oregon Fire Departments did not get called out for rescues during the storm.

“We staffed the station with extra crews over night just in case, but we did not get called out,” said Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough.

Oregon Fire Chief Mike Knoup said his department also received no calls related to the storm.

However, the following morning EMTs were called to eight medical calls.

Those, too, were unrelated to the storm, he said.

The Leaf River and German Valley Fire Departments also reported no calls for help during the storm.

Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, had smooth sailing Monday evening to a fourth two-year term at the head of the board.

No one else was nominated for the board’s top post and the vote was a unanimous 24-0.

“Thank you,” Gouker said after the vote. “We’ve got a lot to do in the next four years — building a new jail for one thing.”

The story was the same for vice chairman John Finfrock, of Mt. Morris, who was also elected to a fourth term at second-in-command unanimously and without opposition.

The county board elects a new chairman and vice chairman every two years after the General Election.

The menu of pancakes, waffles, whole hog sausage, applesauce, orange juice, milk and coffee will be served from 7 to 10 a.m.

Strawberries with whipped cream will be available as well as blueberry and chocolate chip pancake options.

The Leaf River Lions Club will sponsor a two-day trip to the third largest Leader Dogs for the Blind training facility in the world in Rochester Hills, Michigan, on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 1.

Participants do not have to be a Lions Club members.

The Van Galder coach will leave from the Bertolet Memorial Building in Leaf River on Jan. 31 at 7:15 a.m. after having a continental snack prior to boarding.

The bus will stop at the DeKalb Oasis for the first break and at Cracker Barrel in Stevensville, Michigan, for lunch and arrive at Rochester Hills late in the afternoon.

A buffet dinner will be served that evening at the Quality Inn hotel along with a social time.

After a hot breakfast at the hotel on Feb. 1, the bus will leave at 9 a.m. for the Leader Dog facility.

Arriving at Leader Dog, participants will see the newly remodeled facility and be welcomed by several different people.

The group will tour the facility and see all the puppies.

The tour will include where the dogs are cared for in the veterinary clinic, the breeding area, and also where the recipients stay while being accustomed to and trained with their Leader Dog. Free time will be allowed to look around and visit the Leader Dog store.

The group will hear from several of the staff who work there as well as meet and hear from some puppy raisers and also a person with a Leader Dog. Lunch will be provided at Leader Dog, and the bus will leave mid-afternoon with a stop at Bob Evans in Battle Creek for dinner and arrive back in Leaf River around 10 p.m.

The entire trip cost is $210 for a single person and $320 for a couple.

This cost includes the continental breakfast and dinner at the hotel on Thursday.

Lodging is included, as well as the breakfast and lunch on Friday and the tip for the bus driver.

The traveler’s only cost will be the meals at Cracker Barrel and Bob Evans.

EDUCATION NEWS

Students in the Intro to Early Childhood Education classes at Highland Community College, Freeport, raised enough money recently to disperse books to students from area schools.

Twelve area teachers will receive a book a month for a total of 335 students at schools in the Highland district through the end of the school year.

The service project was the idea of Melissa Johnson, Early Childhood Education Coordinator at Highland.

Through a Facebook post, she saw

for a similar program that prompted her to take the idea to her students.

Johnson credits Peggy Tell, a kindergarten teacher in the Freeport School district who teaches part-time at the college, for the inspiration.

Each Highland student was assigned a teacher and was in charge of recruiting sponsors for the books, which are purchased through Scholastic Books.

The amount of money raised was $3,015. The cost per book per student is $1 a month, for a total of $9 a school year.

Teachers are able to set up accounts with Scholastic Books. The added bonus is with each book purchased, points are earned to buy more books.

Kendra Rinehart, of German Valley, is a student in Intro to Early Childhood Education and a preschool teacher in German Valley.

She said when she heard about the book program, she was excited to help children learn through books.

“This was a special service project and my students in German Valley are really into books, and I like the

Six recognized as HCC Distinguished Alumni The Highland Community College Foundation recently recognized six individuals as Distinguished Alumni during the annual ceremony held at the Freeport Club in Freeport.

This is the 24th year the awards have been presented to individuals who have shown community leadership, made their start at Highland Community College and believe in the mission of higher education.

Including these new recipients, the Highland Community College Foundation has recognized 130 individuals have been recognized as Distinguished Alumni.

Among those recognized were Kristin Stinnett, of Polo, and Mike Schiffman, formerly a teacher at Polo High School and an administrator at Forreston schools Stinnett is a 2007 graduate from Highland’s Automotive Mechanics program.

During her time at Highland, instructors, and classmates quickly recognized her skill level, dedication to education along with her willingness to assist others.

She attended Southern Illinois University – Carbondale where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology and her master’s degree in Workforce Education.

Stinnett, who became a Highland instructor in 2018, brings two years of teaching experience from SIU-C to her current role of Automotive

She has 12 years of technician level experience and six years of corporate level work related experience.

Schiffman, of Freeport, graduated from Highland with his associate’s degree in 1992 followed by his bachelor of science degree from Illinois State University.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in Administration and Edu-

cation from Western Illinois University. Schiffman began his educational career teaching history.

He later served as dean of students at Forreston High School, elementary principal at Forreston Grade School, and secondary principal at Pearl City High School.

He served as superintendent of schools for Dakota Community Unit School District for five years prior to being named superintendent of schools for Freeport School District in 2015.

Schiffman has served as member on several boards such as noon

Rotary, Lions Club, and the Freeport Chamber Board.

In 2015, he was elected the Professional Development Chairperson for the Northwest Division of the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA), which honored him with the Northwest IASA Exemplary Service to Education Award for his exemplary leadership contributions to Illinois public schools.

The Eagle Nature Foundation (ENF) is seeking volunteers to help with its 59th Annual Mid-Winter Bald Eagle Count on Jan. 26 and 27, 2019.

This annual bald eagle count is being conducted throughout the Midwest from Northern Minnesota to Louisiana.

To eliminate duplication, the count is actually a three hour count on Saturday, with Sunday being used only if weather, or health, does not allow a person or organization to count the bald eagles in their own locality on the official count day.

At least 90% of the eagles will be counted before 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Each year some counters start the day by counting the bald eagles that may be seen leaving their nighttime roosts, while it is still so dark that the birds are only silhouettes flying

overhead.

Some conservation organizations Paul Gebbia, of Byron, has been a hit at First Fridays with his stand-out performances use teams to count the bald eagles on guitar and vocals and capable assistance from his daughter/stage manager Havah. as a project for their club. This annual count was started and coordinated for 20 years by the late Elton Fawks from Moline.

Terrence Ingram, President of ENF, from Apple River, has been the coordinator of the count for the past 38 years. “This count has been the most important bald eagle count in the nation for many, many years. It was the results of this count in the early 1960’s that truly documented the decline of the bald eagle in the nation,� Ingram said. “Now this count is the only accurate record of how our eagles are reproducing in the Midwest. Since the USFW removed the bald eagle from the Endangered Species List in 2007,

The cause for this low percentage of documented immatures on this count is unknown and any suggestions about a cause have been purely speculative,� Ingram said. “It could be that the immatures are living somewhere else, or some-

thing could actually be affecting their survival: such as starvation; poisoning by chemicals, such as Roundup or Neonicitinoids; or a disease, such as West Nile Virus; or many of the young may be getting killed by vehicle collisions or wind turbines,� Ingram said.

Organizations and volunteers for this count are needed all across the Midwest. ENF wants to document the bald eagles that may be found all along the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, as well as along the Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Rock, Pecatonica, Des Moines, Iowa,

Skunk, Cedar, Turkey, Maquoketa and Wisconsin rivers, as well as many of the historic inland wintering areas, which the bald eagle still uses.

With a mix of Forreston, Milledgeville and Polo wrestlers, the team calls itself the MillCardAcos in practice. The co-op is based at the longtime wrestling school among the three – Polo.

“We couldn’t do it ourselves,” said Marco coach Jesse Culbertson, realizing the difficulties today’s small schools have in fielding a 14-man varsity roster on their own.

According to the second-year head coach, there have been advantages to the arrangement.

“It’s kind of nice they don’t know each other at first,” Culbertson said.

“Right away, there is a competitive drive in the wrestling room to prove yourself against kids from other towns. We had 15 bloody noses in the first week of practice.”

There is also a bonding that takes places among the 19 wrestlers, of which three returners are from Forreston and two each from Milledgeville and Polo.

“They are all on group chat together,” Culbertson said. “Our team starts in the practice room. They all get along well with each other.”

Connor Eubanks (Milledgeville) comes back for his third year in the program after a couple of close misses at qualifying for state.

As a freshman, he was one match away and last year had a tough weight class.

“He’s taking things more seriously,” Culbertson said. “He’s working on his cardio to he’ll be in better shape. At 120, he might be the strongest on the team.”

Alex Davies (Polo) will be at 145 and is also a junior.

“As far as understanding wrestling, he could be one of the most skilled on the team,” Culbertson said. “He’s on track to make state by his senior year, but needs to realize his potential. He’s strong-willed and if he is convinced he will win a match, the chances are that he will.”

Besides Eubanks, the only wrestler to advance to the sectional was Marcus McKenna (Milledgeville).

He is certified at 160 be will be at 170 for most of the year.

“He might make that by the regional,” Culbertson said. “Marcus came to get better for football and found he likes wrestling. He has a good work ethic and is a good practice partner.”

“Mason’s really coachable. You show him and move and he’ll get it,” Culbertson said.

The other captain is Lane Lindquist of Forreston. A junior, he is listed at 160.

“He wasn’t out for football, but stayed proactive in the weight room,” Culbertson said.

Another Forreston wrestler is sophomore 220-pounder, Joel Ludwig.

“He gives it his everything and is still getting into shape,” Culbertson said.

Caleb Guthrie (Forreston) is a 113pound sophomore.

“He’s real scrappy,” Culbertson said.

The final returner is Polo’s Cole Faivre, a 182-pound sophomore and a wrestler with a bright future.

“He works his butt off and truly wants to be as good as he can,” Culbertson said. “Cole’s so close to being outstanding. He has brief spurts, but is still inexperienced.”

One problem with a youthful team is the “being thrown to the wolves” mentality. An example of that was

facing 1A power Dakota and Freeport last week.

“One thing I am proud of is these kids don’t quit,” Culbertson said.

“They’re mentally tough. We’re getting there physically, but not there yet. I will can do is keep showing them technique.”

Cards looking for depth, physicality this season

“We have some knock-down shooters with (Braedon) Fyock and (Kolten) Dorty,” head coach Jonathan Schneiderman said. “With at least four of our guys, we’ll be especially physical in the paint. We should rebound and screen well. On defense, we’ll pressure the ball.”

The depth was noticeable on Schneiderman using 10 players in the first game on Saturday against Belmont (Wisconsin).

In what’s shaping up to be a very deep run of area small-school basketball, definitely add Forreston to the list of teams capable of beating anyone.

Leading the way is 3-year starter Braedon Fyock, who opposing teams are likely to key on.

“He knows the game and has gotten better and better, ”Schneiderman said. “He’s very experienced.”

At point guard will be Hunter Rogers (5-11), another senior team leader and starter and from last year.

“He’ll control the tempo and has good attention to detail,”Schneiderman said.

Kolten Dorty, a 6-1 junior, will also make his presence felt at guard and has had the benefit of a full contingent of workouts.

Many of the football players are only in their first week worth of workouts.

Evan Kelsey (5-8) gives added depth at guard and wing.

“He brings athleticism and ener-

gy,” Schneiderman said.

Mitchell is one of the post players that offer a physical presence down low. The 6-3, 250-pounder also has a deft shooting touch, evidenced by a 6-for-6 start against Belmont.

Perhaps the most diverse player is senior Hayden Singley. At 6-2, he had length and can play any position on offense or defense. He had a strong start against Belmont.

Returning to the program are seniors Garett Badertscher (6-1, 240) and Sawyer Wild (5-9, 215).

“Their physical presence will help us,” Schneiderman said.

Another force under the basket will be 6-0, 300-pound Kilar Huenefeld, who is out 6-8 weeks from a football injury.

Here’s my take on it: This is a non story. The real story coming out of Byron was a fantastic football game with Monticello for the state title.

I relate to those teenagers from Byron in that when I was in high school and if a group from my football team was planning to do an Oreo Run, I may have joined right in.

It sounds weird now, but as a 17-year old, it might make perfect sense.

And, it wasn’t like these guys were doing it in daylight and exposing themselves, like the streaking craze of my 1970s generation.

Here’s the biggest difference between when I was in school and now.

School boards, administrators

and the media would not give a stunt like this the time of day.

Instead, the coach of a particular sport had the authority to discipline as he saw fit, such as running extra sprints or laps after practice.

But, as a local superintendent told me, schools must take steps to protect themselves from liability.

The real problem is not a bunch of yahoos running around with an Oreo in their nether regions, but how litigious we’ve become as a society.

Case number two at Nazareth Academy is about the whining done when one’s team doesn’t win. Sadly, there is also the litigious element.

Chicago Simeon lost a football playoff game to Nazareth and accused a Nazareth parent of influencing the final outcome.

In an actual lawsuit, it was claimed the parent was on the sidelines in a referee’s uniform consulting with the game officials on what calls to make to ensure Nazareth won the game.

A complaint was also filed with the IHSA, one of a multitude they get on yearly basis, most of which have no credibility, as was the case

with this one.

Like the Byron story, it made national news.

Again, the real story was Nazareth’s state title over St. Charles North in the 7A finals. That was hardly covered by media from Chicago, but the preposterous claims sure were.

At least the Register Star’s article on Byron was well researched, whereas the Naz-Simeon story was based on hearsay. It was also an insult to the officiating crew for that game.

Simeon is primarily African-American, but we can’t say this was racially motivated.

I’ve been around sports long enough to know there is equal opportunity complaining when it comes to both whites and blacks.

No matter what race they are, parents have been claiming foul forever when the teams their kid plays on loses.

Rather than accepting a loss, especially if we don’t think it to be fair, today’s society has taught us to act like little kids if we don’t get our way.

wo teams in the IHSA state finals in football made more headlines off the field than on it. Both Byron and Nazareth Academy were national news after two completely separate incidents.

Administrators at Byron were confronted with an embarrassing situation when it was reported to them that several members of the football team ran naked across the school’s football field with an Oreo cookie in their buttocks.

Apparently, there is such a thing as an “Oreo Run”, whereby a person runs naked in this manner.

Byron’s attempt at the Oreo Run was Friday night before the team’s first playoff game.

After an investigation by school officials, several players were suspended for some of the playoff games.

Initially, concerns were raised about hazing taking place in conjunction with the nude cookie run.

However, the investigation also concluded no coercion, as all participants volunteered for the activity.

Nonetheless, an article appeared on the front page of the Sunday sports section of the Rockford Reg-

Polo fell to Oregon 47-38 on Nov. 27.

The Lady Marcos jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Hawks held a 21-18 edge at halftime. Oregon outscored Polo 14-6 in the third to create some breathing room.

Alex Dusing poured in a game-high 17 points for the Marcos. Mallory Patterson and Becca Wagner helped with six apiece.

Olivia Lambrigtsen had a team-high 12 points for the Hawks. Jenae Bothe chipped in nine points, while Breanna DeHaan and Ella Martin each added seven.

Polo’s fresh-soph team won 59-22.

Polo fell to Orangeville 37-33 on Nov. 28.

Dusing scored 15 points for the Marcos, but it was not enough in a road NUIC loss.

The teams were tied 10-10 after a quarter and 19-19 at halftime, but the Broncos jumped ahead in the third quarter. The fresh-soph won 33-21.

The Lady Marcos fell to Aquin on Nov. 30, 78-47 in an NUIC East matchup at home.

The Marcos got 11 points from Becca Wagner and 10 from Dusing.

Aquin took a 25-15 lead after one quarter, and led 47-23 at halftime and 71-35 after three. The fresh-soph lost 50-39.

One hundred seventy-nine Ogle County 4-H’ers are being honored for their achievements during the 2018 4-H year at club programs this fall.

The 4-H Experience Award allows 4-H’ers to be recognized for their work in Project Learning, Participation, Community Service, and Leadership.

Three levels can be earned; Bronze 4-H Clover Award, Silver 4-H Clover Award, and Gold 4-H Clover Award. All awards will be distributed at the member’s 4-H Club awards banquet.

2018 4-H Achievement Celebration Winners listed Ogle County’s top 4-H members and clubs were honored for outstanding achievement at a special program held Nov. 11 in the Byron Middle School Theatre.

Top county honors went to 4-H teens Julia Heller, Dixon and Grace Mongan, Oregon.

Heller, a member of the Grand Detour Greens 4-H Club and Mongan, a Carefree 4-H Club member, were the recipients of the Co-op Watch Awards sponsored

by Ogle County Farm Bureau and its affiliates.

Watches are awarded each year to the two 4-H’ers with the most impressive records of long-term leadership and service at the club level and beyond.

Lauren Carlson, Byron, was the recipient of a $50 cash award sponsored by the Ogle County 4-H Foundation.

The Foundation Award is presented annually to a single 4-H’er who has shown leadership skill, a willingness to

help with 4-H activities, and has served as a positive example to younger members.

Four youth were challenged to greater leadership and service as recipients of the “I Dare You” Leadership Award. New owners of William Danforth’s inspiring book, “I Dare You”, these youth were selected based on their previous leadership, citizenship, and project work.

OBITUARY LEONA C. HAYENGA Leona C. Hayenga, 101, died peacefully on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018 at Dixon Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on May 22, 1917 in Oregon, the daughter of John and Jennie (Johnson) Dirksen.

Leona graduated in 1934 from Mt. Morris High School and married Harry L. Hayenga in 1936.

Leona’s love of the outdoors, animals and gardening led them to farming in the Lee and Ogle County areas for more than 40 years.

They milked Holstein cows, raised chickens and horses, as well as various other livestock and crops.

After Harry’s death in 1973, Leona continued to milk cows and raise chickens, always with one of her prized

German shepherds at her side.

After retirement in 1981, Leona moved to a farmette in rural Ashton where she continued raising chickens and boarding horses, as well as working for a neighboring dairy farm.

Even after leaving the farmette in 2008, when she moved to Dixon, Leona (affectionately known as “Grandma Great” or “Amazing Gram”) continued to share her love of the land and animals with four generations through her wonderful stories.

She loved spending time with her

family, especially on the farm, and was an avid reader and crossword puzzle solver.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Duane Butterbaugh; daughterin-law, Mary Lynn Hayenga; granddaughters, Deanna Butterbaugh (Barb Phillips), Kris (Larry) Williams; and granddaughter-in-law, Susan Butterbaugh; great-grandchildren: Sam, Nick, Kori (Cody), Matthew, Mary Ellen (Missy) and Teresa (Maghen); and great-great-grandchildren, Lauren, Car-

ter, Jaron, and Keaghen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Anna Marie Castle and Helen Dirksen; brother, Mike Dirksen; son, Roger F. Hayenga; grandsons, David Butterbaugh and Brad Hayenga; granddaughter, Mary Ann (Butterbaugh) Marconi; and great-great-granddaughter, Amelia.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, preceded by a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Frank Lay will officiate.

Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, rural Oregon.

A memorial fund has been established for Unity Hospice or Heifer International.

Holcomb and Armour Roads at 4:43 a.m. and found a van had been traveling westbound on Holcomb Road when the person driving the vehicle drove into the north ditch striking a culvert.

The vehicle then went airborne striking a stop sign and rolling over several times prior to coming to a stop in the field.

The driver of the vehicle, Kyle D. Smith, 27, of Byron, had left the scene on foot prior to emergency vehicles arriving but was later located at a residence in Holcomb.

Smith, who was uninjured, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, and no valid driver’s license.

He is scheduled to appear in court in January.

Montavion Ross, 35, no address given, was arrested at 8:45 p.m. after a traffic stop at 201 McConaughy Ave., Rochelle, for driving while license suspended.

Ross was also cited for an equipment violation.

Davis Junction, was eastbound on East Holcomb Road when it failed to negotiate a curve. It left the north side of the road, struck a tree, and rolled over onto its roof.

Doane was transported to Swedish American Hospital by Lynn-Scott-Rock ambulance with minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Nov. 26 At 6 a.m., police investigated a one-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of First Street and Gale Street where a 2006 International plow driven

by City of Oregon street department employee James R. Morris, slid into some wooden poles.

During removal of the plow, several other poles were knocked over as well as damage done to the city plow. No citations were issued.

At 4:22 p.m., police responded to a suspicious person call in the 700 block of Franklin Street resulting in issuing Daetrone J. Mosley, 23, of Chicago, citations for operating a vehicle with expired registration plates and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

These violations occurred in the 700 block of Franklin Street.

Dec. 1 At 1:53 a.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of South Second Street resulting in the arrest of John A. Hitchcock, 36, of Oregon, for aggravated domestic battery.

Hitchcock was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 30 Kira K. Guenzler, 34, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 12:40 p.m. for passing a school bus while loading or unloading. This violation occurred in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street.

At 4:30 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Fourth Street and Jefferson Street involving a 1998 Ford driven by Glenn E. Stroh, 89, of Oregon, and a 2005 Dodge driven by David A. Rudis,47, of Oregon. Stroh was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

At 10:30 a.m., police investigated a hit and run traffic crash where a 2015 Dodge belonging to Antonio I. Welle, 22, of Oregon, was struck by an unknown vehicle while parked in the South Third

Street municipal parking lot.
