Council vetoes cannabis businesses Aldermen unanimously vote against a possible dispensary in town

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Polo City Council voted unanimously Monday to prohibit cannabis businesses in the city.

The decision comes at a time when some local governments are passing ordinances to allow or disallow cannabis dispensaries in their towns as the state prepares to issue a limited number of retail licenses in 2020.

“Right now we want to move forward not having it and kind of watch how everything goes in the places that do pass it,” Alderman Donald Sanders Jr. said. “We just decided for our community it’s better to hold back. It’s such a new thing that we want to see how it unfolds before we decide whether or not we want to bring it into the community.”

Sanders said the decision could be revisited later if communities that allow cannabis businesses turn out to be safe and successful.

The City of Oregon decided last week to not wait and created a zoning code that would allow a recreational cannabis dispensary to come to town. The vote was 3-2 in favor of creating the code.

Polo Alderman Keith Chesnut made packets that outlined how allowing a cannabis business in the city could be detrimental and handed them out to the council members when the ordinance was discussed.

“There’s all kinds of problems that come along with that,” Chesnut said. “I think our kids have enough issues without that being in town and being more available to them. And I’d hate to see that come into our little town.”

Sanders Jr. and Chesnut said the original discussion had by the aldermen at an earlier meeting on the issue was “pretty unanimous,” save for some talk about the money that could be brought into the community by a cannabis business.

“There was a little bit of discussion over whether there could possibly be some tax dollars out there,” Chesnut said. ‘The idea of chasing money versus values doesn’t balance out to me.”

Forreston The Forreston Village Board passed an ordinance on Oct. 21 that prohibits cannabis businesses in the village once they become legal in the state.

Village President Mark Metzger said there was a healthy discussion on the topic. The benefits of revenues and tax breaks were discussed, but now is not the time for Forreston. It wants to wait

and see, much like Polo.

“Smaller towns, you’re always looking for additional income,” Metzger said.

“The opposition, while it’s the law now, a couple didn’t feel comfortable with it.”

Mt. Morris The Village of Mt. Morris has an upcoming town meeting on Dec. 11 on whether or not cannabis businesses should be allowed in town.

Village President Dan Elsasser said Tuesday that it’s not something that has been discussed in depth, but Mt. Morris does plan to create some sort of an ordinance regulating cannabis businesses.

“That’s what we’re hoping to gather from the town meeting,” Elsasser said.

“I’d say it’s kind of split. I’d say among the board that there are some mixed feelings.”

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at Pinecrest Grove Community Center.

Cause of Oct. 20 Polo fire is ruled as undetermined

JC Schultz, Public Information Officer at the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal confirmed the ruling on Tuesday.

Daniel Marth, 63, died in the fire.

p.m., Polo Fire and Polo Police Department responded to 507 N. Adams Ave. in reference to a structure fire. Upon arrival, officers and fire fighters found the lower level of the residence to be engulfed in flames.

Upon entrance to the residence, Marth, a resident of the home, was found deceased. Multiple fire departments assisted at the scene.

The Oregon Fire Department has continued the search for the bodies of two missing fishermen whose boat capsized near the Oregon dam on Nov. 20 by doing occasional surveys of the Rock River with sonar and boats.

Divers will not be put back into the water until a credible location is found by sonar or sighting, Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup said.

The department has had boats out twice in the past week and anticipates searching more as the weather improves towards the end of this week.

“We’ll have boats in the water as long as weather permits,” Knoup

said. “We’re not just giving up.

We’re not canceling the search. It’s just were doing it on an as-needed basis until we come up with something.”

High water conditions and low temperatures have made it dangerous to search out on the river in recent weeks. Knoup also has to take manpower into consideration when it comes to searching. Oregon Fire is a paid, on-call volunteer department.

“I’ve got two medics here,” Knoup said. “Today, one of my medics was qualified to go out on the boat. I took his spot on the ambulance and he went out to search. Since there’s only two of them during the day and myself, we’re kind of limited on what days we can do it without a lot of volunteer help.”

The names of the missing fishermen have not yet been released.

At a news conference on Nov. 22, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said that the names will not be released until the bodies are found.

High winds caused trees to topple in two towns

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Street crews in two Ogle County towns were busy Nov. 27 after high winds whipped through the area, toppling trees and sending chunks of trunks to the ground – and on a house and car.

Mt. Morris firefighters closed off a block of Front Street after a large branch fell onto a house and electrical wires. Firefighters had to wait for ComEd workers to cut power to the lines before clean-up could begin.

Meanwhile, Oregon city workers were busy cutting up tree debris that came crashing down on a car in the 400 block of North Sixth Street.

Resident Rose Thomas said she was trying to enjoy a cup of coffee when she heard a noise, looked out her front window and saw the tree fall on the electrical lines on the other side of the street.

“I saw sparks and then I saw the tree down. Then the lights went out,” she said.

The tree also took down Infinity cable lines, causing outages in Oregon.

Street department crews had the street cleared by 3:15 p.m. and electrical power was restored by 7 p.m.

High winds buffeted a parts of the Midwest throughout the day prompting the National Weather Service to issue a high wind warning until 6 p.m. Wind speeds averaged 30 to 40 mph, with gusts of 50 to 55 mph in some areas.

Nature’s bluster was part of a larger winter storm system that rolled across the Midwest and threatened to scramble Thanksgiving plans for millions of people.

The weather outside wasn’t quite frightful, but the firepots were delightful as visitors to the 33rd annual Candlelight Walk started getting into the holiday spirit on Saturday, Nov.30.

Drizzle fell before, during, and after the 5-hour event in downtown Oregon, but that didn’t stop Griffyn Havey from hand delivering his letter to Santa.

The five-year-old from Leaf River sat on Santa’s lap and carefully opened his handwritten letter as his sister, Gabriella, 7, and Mrs. Claus watched.

“He wrote most of it in his own handwriting and everything,” said Griffyn’s mom, Angela, who watched nearby. “He’s asking for Legos and a robotic car.”

After disembarking from Santa’s lap, Griffyn felt confident that his wishes would be honored.

“Because he said he would,” said Griffyn when asked if he thought he’d get the toys.

Santa was just one of several activities offered kids and their families again this year. Characters from the Paw Patrol greeted kids along shops on Washington Street and Frozen stars, Elsa and Anna, were on duty at the Village Bakery.

Kyla Ross, 4, of Oregon, was so excited to meet Anna that she kept smiling after posing for a photo with the Disney stars along with her sister, Rylynn.

Christmas in the Country is this Friday, Saturday The Forreston Area Business Association’s Christmas in the Country, is this Friday, Dec 6 and Saturday, Dec 7.

The festivities kick off Friday at 9 a.m. with rolls and coffee at the United Methodist Church.

There will also be the annual bazaar and Christmas Corner at the church.

At 11 a.m., the Methodist Church is again the place to be for the popular Lasagna/Soup/Sandwich/ Dessert luncheon. The luncheon is available until 2 p.m.

“While you are in town, stop at the local businesses to sign up for drawings and to enjoy some holiday goodies,” said Jane Koeller, FABA member. “Many of the businesses have extended hours on Friday and will be open until 8 p.m.”

The high school/middle school chorus will carol in local businesses and around downtown from 4-5 p.m.

They will start at the Forreston State Bank and end at Memorial Park, just in time for the Community Tree Lighting.

The Faith Lutheran Cookie Sale

will start at 4 p.m. downtown in the building next to Sweetwood Interiors.

The sale will last until the cookies are gone, but get there early for the best, most delicious, selection.

New this year is the Play to Learn Together Gift Shop featuring Discovery Toys, books, and games.

The toy top will be located inside Believe in the Children.

To make shopping easier, there will be supervised crafts for the kids. The shop will be open from 4-7 p.m.

Santa will arrive at Memorial Park by fire engine and will help with the tree lighting at 5 p.m.

Kids can visit the Jolly Old Elf at the park until 6 p.m.

“While you are at the park you can enjoy some hot chocolate sponsored by Forreston Area Business Association,” Koeller said. “At 6

They will also offer $5 beard trims and $5 paraffin dips,” Koeller said.

From 5:30-8 p.m., the Forreston Fire Department invites visitors to check out the fire trucks and ambulances. There will be cookies, cocoa, and special drawings.

“While you are at the fire station, visit the community room for the “make and take” Christmas activity,” Koeller said. “There will be different crafts for kids and parents to create. The activities will be available from 6-8 p.m.”

Saturday events include the annual St James Holiday bake sale at Green’s Motors from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m..

The Community Christmas Concert will again be Saturday afternoon. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Church.

“This festive event will include local musical groups. The Rock River Valley Barbershop Chorus will be the featured act,” Koeller said.

Donations of non-perishable food items and money will be accepted and donated to the New Life Pantry and the Forreston Lions Club for their Christmas boxes.

New this year is the Community Soup Supper. This event is a fundraiser for Forreston Sauerkraut Days.

The supper will be at the Forreston Fire station community room from 4-7 p.m.. The menu will include choice of soup – chili, potato, or sauerkraut; choice of sandwich – ham or turkey; chips, dessert, and a drink. Cost is $7 for a whole order or $4 for a half order.

All men are invited to attend. The speaker will be Rev. Scott Ralston. The Set Free Quartet will provide music. The offering always goes to the New Life Community Church in Forreston.

Leaf River Lions Club offers Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 14 The Leaf River Lions Club will be serving a “Breakfast With Santa” on Saturday, Dec. 14 in the Bertolet Memorial building in Leaf River.

The menu of pancakes (blueberry and chocolate chip), waffles (with strawberries and whipped cream), French toast, whole hog sausage, applesauce, orange juice, milk and coffee will be served from 7 to 10 a.m.

Santa will be arriving around 9 a.m. and will stay until breakfast is over.

For this special occasion, children 13 and under will eat for free! There will also be games and giveaways for the kids after they eat in the basement.

There will also be opportunities to have pictures taken with Santa.

Pricing for the breakfast will be age 14 - adults $7 and all you can eat for $8.

Fun and run at KB Egg Nog Run Dec. 28 The second annual KB Egg Nog Jog will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28.

The early registration deadline for the jog is Dec. 7 and guarantees participants a cozy Egg Nog Jog beanie. The cost is $25.

The event will commence at the Oregon VFW, 1210 W. Washington St., Oregon.

The Egg Nog Jog is a 3K runwalk through the streets of Oregon.

This is not a timed event. The fun will continue inside the VFW with music, food and drinks.

The tree lighting ceremony of the Community Christmas Tree will be at 5 p.m. at the corner of Main and Maple Streets.

The 8th Annual Christmas Tree Decorating Contest will highlight the evening.

Several trees will be decorated by local community groups and winners will be announced.

Grooming van catches fire in drive

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A mobile pet grooming van caught fire in a driveway on Nov. 25 at 12756 W. Pilgrim Road near Dixon.

Dixon Rural Fire responded to the call at about 4:20 p.m. and put the fire out within minutes. No humans or pets were injured in the fire, Chief Sid Aurand said.

The operator of the pet grooming van entered the home to retrieve a pet. Upon returning, the back of the vehicle was in flames.

The vehicle was completely destroyed as a result of the fire. The home sustained minor heat damage.

Paint on the siding was burnt and a car in the garage had its taillights melted.

Aurand believes the fire was caused by one of several propane tanks in the vehicle, used for things like heating water.

Marian L. Carpenter, 87, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019 at the Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris.

She was born Nov. 19, 1932 in Sterling, the daughter of Cloyd E. and Marvel (Kramer) Kendell, Sr. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1950 and then attended one year of Beautician School. Marian worked for 30 years as a beautician from her home in Dixon and also at Bernice Zimmerman’s Beauty Shop in Sterling.

She also worked for 10 years at Quebecor in Mt. Morris and 15 years at the

SCOTT POWELL Scott Powell, 57, of Oregon, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019 in his home.

He was born on Sept. 5, 1962 in Dixon, to Robert and Phyllis (Painter) Powell.

He married Kristi Long on March 20, 1992 in Oregon.

Scott was a 1980 graduate of Dixon High School. He was employed the past eight years at Jones Natural Chews in

Doss, Vernon Kendell, Cloyd Kendell, Jr., and Don Kendell.

She is survived by her son Jeff Camling of South Dakota, four grandchildren; Amy (Brent) Wolber, Nathan (Joni) Camling, Dane Camling, Kristyn (Anthony) Camling-DiFulvio; two daughter-in-laws Lynnel and Brenda Camling; 11 great grandchildren, Dustin, Jessica, Brook, Ashley, Sarah, Tyler, Amanda, Leonardo, Vincent, Avianna, and Roman; sister Barb Travis; thee brothers; Gordon (Aimee) Kendell, Allen (Colombia) Kendell, and Irvin (Sharon) Kendell; step daughter Carol (Jeff)

Funeral service were at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon, with the Rev. Rodney R. Caldwell Chaplin of the Pinecrest Manor officiating.

Visitation was one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial was in the Egan Cemetery.

Kevin Joe McKee, 52, of Oregon, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019 in his home following a courageous battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

He was born Sept. 24, 1967 in Linton, Indiana, to Michael and Virginia (Liston) McKee. He married Lora Stevens April 18, 2009 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon.

Kevin was a 1985 graduate of Central High School in Switz City, Indiana,

Oregon Health Care Center as a CNA. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oregon where she sang in the choir. She also sang with the Sweet Adeline’s group.

Marian married Terry Carpenter on Sept. 28, 1985 in Grand Detour. He preceded her in 2002.

The main objective for Polo was to shut down Olivia Lambrigtsen in their Tuesday night game at the Blackhawk Center.

The Marcos accomplished that goal, but could not do the same with Lauren Montavon and Jenae Bothe in a 45-37 loss to the Hawks. “It was pick your poison,� Polo coach Jeff Grobe said. “We did what we wanted in holding Lambrigtsen down. We made Bothe beat us. She has nice up-and-under moves.�

With the score tied 8-8 midway through the first quarter, Polo went on a 17-1 run to take a 25-9 lead with five minutes left until halftime. “They had a little trouble with our 1-3-1. They adjusted later,� Grobe said.

Marah Blake, Becca Wagner and Mallory Patterson did the bulk of damage to Oregon on a variety of shots, both inside and out. “We were hustling and diving after loose balls,� Grobe said. “Marah had a nice inside game and Becca was good on both ends with tipped balls and steals.�

Needing a spark, Oregon got one from Montavon.

The 5-foot-10 senior broke the scoring drought with a basket to cut the lead to 25-11, this after the Hawks only managed one point in eight minutes.

She then grabbed three consecutive offense rebounds and put in a free throw, as the momentum suddenly shifted. “That’s when we switched to zone,�

Montavon said. “We communicate really well on that and it allows us to position ourselves better. Polo also left the post open to open to concentrate on Olivia.�

Bothe took full advantage, pulling the Hawks within 25-18 on a pair of free throws and a basket. Blake finally scored for Polo, but Oregon was on

a roll and Breanna DeHaan closed the half out with a basket, as Oregon trailed 27-22. “Lauren had a fantastic game with her mid-range shot and knack for getting rebounds and loose balls,� said Oregon coach Wendy Lambrigsten. “And, Jenae – what else can you say.

She can set herself up on the block, even when double and triple-teamed.�

Coming out of the break, Wagner increased the Polo lead to 29-22, but it was all Oregon after that.

Montavon got the rally going again with a block and steal on Marco consecutive possessions, sandwiched around a basket. Then it was Bothe feeding Lambrigtsen for a textbook assist.

With 2:07 left in the third quarter, Montavon scored three straight points to cut the lead to 33-30. Meanwhile, the hot-shooting Marcos turned cold.

Polo was 9-for-17 shooting the first quarter and then fell to 3-for-15 in the second.

However, it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Oregon finally took the lead.

Bothe continued to tear it up inside for Oregon with eight fourth-quarter points to put the game away for the Hawks. She ended with 17, followed by 11 from Montavon and nine from Lambrigtsen.

Polo was without Alex Dusing, who has been bothered by a knee injury.

Grobe hopes to have her back for their holiday tournament, of which both Oregon (2-3) and Polo (2-3) will compete in. “Once we get into a groove, I think we can be a force to reckon with,� said Wendy Lambrigtsen, coaching while undergoing cancer treatments. “I got energy from the crowd and my coaches tonight.�

Marcos build big lead, but can’t hold off Durand Durand rallys from 18-point halftime deficit to win in OT

BY TY REYNOLDS treynolds@saukvalley.com The first half belonged to Polo. The second half was all Durand – and the Bulldogs carried that into overtime, too.

Durand rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat the Marcos 55-45 in overtime in the championship game of the AFC Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 30 in Ashton.

“Credit Durand; they made all the plays down the stretch,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “If we went by the first half, we deserved to win, but second half and overtime, they deserved the win.”

Polo (3-1) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the game’s first 2½ minutes, and then used a 12-2 run over the final minute of the first quarter and opening 2 minutes of the second to build a 24-9 lead. Tucker Mumford started the surge with a runout layup, then hit a pair of 3-pointers later on, before Joey Bardell found Parker Wolber on a kickout pass for another 3 to cap the outburst.

The Marcos then went scoreless for the next 2 minutes, but Durand (4-0) didn’t make much headway.

Brody Glawe banked in a 3 with 3:48 left in the second quarter to ignite a 9-0 Polo run to end the half. Jace Coffey turned a halfcourt steal into a layup, and Logan Kindle hit a turnaround jumper form the right baseline as the first-half buzzer sounded for a 33-15 lead.

“Polo’s tough, holy moly,” Durand coach Jason Stram said. “I did not expect them to start that fast, and I did not expect to be down at halftime. When I went in at halftime, I definitely was woke up, and I made sure my players got woke up.”

That alarm clock did the job for the Bulldogs. They outscored the Marcos 19-2 in the third quarter, opening it with back-to-back 3-pointers by Trenton Taylor and Justin Smith, then getting a putback from Jake Anderson, a coastto-coast steal and layup from Tay-

“They did a better job of getting themselves in transition and making sure they got back against our transition,” Messer said. “And then defensively, we had a couple of mental lapses, and offensively we tried to slow down the pace, and that’s my fault; we should’ve just kept going in our half-court, looking to attack.”

The Marcos tried to get back in that vein in the fourth, as Mumford hit a free throw, then took an inbounds pass from Colton Gunder and flicked it right back to Gunder for a 3-pointer and a 39-34 lead with 5:56 to play.

But Durand scored the next five points, forging its first tie since 0-0 on Smith’s 1-and-1 free throw makes with 3:20 to go.

Kindle then hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 1:07 left for a 41-39 Polo lead, before Alex Montalvan’s putback tied it again with 48.8 sec-

onds to play. Montalvan missed the free throw for the three-point play, but Durand got the rebound, and pulled the ball out to hold for the last shot.

With less than 10 seconds to play, Smith and Montalvan tried a giveand-go on the left wing, but Smith’s layup was waved off for a charging call, keeping the score tied at 41 with 5.7 seconds left.

Gunder dribbled the length of the court and put up a layup, but it was blocked out of bounds with 0.7 seconds left. Gunde then tossed a lob to Mumford right in front of the basket, but Mumford’s tip hit the rim in three places before bouncing out, forcing overtime.

“We had some shots that, I think, in a week or two we’re going to make,” Messer said. “Down the stretch, we got real tight.”

Durand took its first lead of the game in the first 5 seconds of overtime, as the opening tip ended up in Smith’s hands right under the basket for a layup. A steal at half-

court turned into a layup for Taylor, then Montalvan scored on a pretty spin move on the left low block before dishing post-to-post to Anderson for another pointblank bucket and a 49-41 lead with 2:12 remaining.

“All of our bigs did their job,” Stram said. “When Cam [Maines] and Aaron [Folk] are out there, that’s a bigger lineup and we’re in there to just bang bodies. We bring in Jake and Alex, we get a little faster, a little more athleticism. It’s a formula of success, as long as they utilize it the correct way.”

Bennett Soltow went coast-tocoast for a basket to cut Polo’s deficit to 49-43, but Smith hit both ends of a 1-and-1 before Montalvan scored down low again, pushing the margin to 10 with 35 seconds left.

“The kids came out in the second half ready to go, and made an incredible comeback,” Stram said.

Smith finished with 18 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks for Durand, while Taylor added 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Anderson chipped in six points and seven boards.

Mumford led the Marcos with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two assists, with Coffey adding 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Kindle finished with eight points, eight rebounds and two assists, Gunder had five points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Soltow nabbed a game-high five steals.

“We’re going to learn from this, I think, and that’s what I told the kids in the locker room afterward,” Messer said. “If you lose, as long as you learn from it, it can be a good thing.”

In describing the style of play for the Forreston boys basketball team, new coach Justin Shiltz said there will be a night and day difference between him and previous coach Jonathan Schneiderman.

“That is on the court,” Shiltz said.

“I’m sure we share a lot of other same values in how to run a program.”

Influenced by traditional downstate teams like Quincy and Lincoln, Shiltz is bringing in a 1-2-2 zone to Forreston, completely different than the man-to-man employed by Schneiderman.

“The only other team around here that runs it is Mike Miller up at Hononegah,” Shiltz said. “If you see us in man-to-man, something went drastically wrong.”

The Cardinals will also employ a full-court press out of the zone. Offensively, they will use a spread ball screen offense with a pick-and-roll.

In his 21st year of coaching, Shiltz is an unknown to this area, having spent the majority of his basketball world in the Quad-cities. He graduated from Davenport West and played college ball at Marycrest, earning honor-mention All-American.

He coached both boys and girls basketball at East Moline UT, Rock Island Alleman, Davenport and one year, which he termed disastrous, at Portland, Oregon.

“I was very familiar with Forreston,” Shiltz said. “When I was at UT we played the Dixon girls tourney and saw them there. I know their school has a wonderful teaching and coaching staff. The students conduct themselves well.”

After spending the majority of time at 4A schools, Shiltz is excited to be in the small-school ranks.

Like other 1A/2A schools in that area, there is a lot of pride and passion for sports,” Shiltz said. “I’m ready to go. 3-sport

athletes are dying out, but thriving here. It’s a throwback mentality.

They have state titles in football here, but people love basketball too.

They also host one of the most historic tournaments in the state.”

The Cardinals graduated on of the most prolific scorers in school history in Braedon Fyock.

“We lost a lot of experience,” Shiltz said.

One returner with plenty of playing time is junior point guard Ethan Greenfield.

“I like his temperament. He’s very coachable,” Shiltz said. “We’ll rely on him to have the ball in his hands.

He’s smart, skilled and can shoot.”

Called a ‘wildcard’ by Shiltz, Chase Greenfield is returning to the hardwood after sitting out his junior year.

“When I got here, I was told he was one person to try to get to come out,” Shiltz said. “He has too much talent not to be out and is a nice-sized (6-3) wing.”

Helping out at guard will be seniors Riley Cornileus and Kolton Dorty.

“Riley is hard-nosed and Kolton is a really good shooter,” Shiltz said.

Bolstering the front line will be big men Jakob Boomgarden and Derek DeVries.

“Jakob is good size and can shoot and handle the ball a little. He’ll bring versatility,” Shiltz said. “Derek will bang around inside and be a big help.”

Dom Christensen is giving basketball a whirl and Shiltz is impressed with his leaping ability.

“He’ll give us spot minutes. He defends like crazy and can rebound,” Shiltz said.

Coming off the bench to help at guard will be Jordan Neuschwander and Braden Politsch.

Though a newcomer to the area, Shiltz feels Lena-Winslow, Pecatonica, Aquin and Eastland will be the teams to beat.

Tigers lose 3A title game in 46-42 heartbreaker

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglcountynews.com It was another thriller in the 3A state title game for Byron, but unfortunately for the Tigers, it was another heartbreaking loss.

The only difference was this time it was at Huskie Stadium instead of Memorial Stadium.

“They’re both tough losses to swallow,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said following the Nov. 29 loss.

Trailing 42-32 with 4:32 left in the game, Williamsville quarterback Conor McCormick and Brendan Bishop connected for two touchdowns passes for a 46-42 win.

“It was an incredible game,” Williamsville coach Aaron Kunz said. “It was incredible heart by our kids when (Byron) returned that onside kick. Both teams fought so hard. A tip of the hat to Byron. It was unbelievable.”

Down 42-39, the Bullets tried an onside kick, but Parker Eccles of Byron wisely snagged it on the run and went to the l7-yard line. Heading down the field untouched, the ball slipped out of his hands in the wet conditions, but it bounced right back to him. That may have allowed the Bullets to catch him before scoring.

Looking to put the game away, the normally potent Tiger offense came up short on fourth down and turned the ball over at the ll-yard line with 2:35 left.

“That was a huge momentum changer, but football is a weird game,” said Byron QB Ben Carlson, who was masterful in directing the offense and also led the team with nine tackles.

That was where McCormick’s (335 yards) passing and Grant Ripperda’s (181 yards) running sliced through the Tiger defense leading up to a red zone possession with 30 seconds left in the game.

McCormick was flushed out of the pocket and found Bishop in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass that resembled a playground play.

“I saw him rolling out and I tried to find space,” said Bishop, who had a 3A title game record of 230 yards receiving, to go along with nine catches and three TDs.

There was no stopping either Byron and Williamsville until Ripperda fumbled in the red zone early in the third quarter.

Sophomore Chandler Binkley, who saw plenty of action mid season filling in for a hobbled Tiger offensive backfield, recovered the loose ball and Williamsville was finally stopped after five straight scoring drives.

Byron, which led 35-32 at the time after a Isaac Stickler TD, couldn’t capitalize, as its offense was stopped on fourth-and-l on its next drive.

“We knew they wouldn’t pass and we stacked our defense. That was a huge stop for us,” Kunz said.

The Tigers did gain a 42-32 advantage on a 5l-yard scoring drive. The key play was a 20-yard

run by Stickler, who followed pulling Tyler Elsbury taking out three defenders on the play.

“It’s like following a truck,” Stickler said.

On the next play, l55-pound Josiah Fetherston showed little guys could block too by sealing off the last would-be tackler on a Drake Snodgrass 25-yard touchdown and 42-32 lead.

“It was a great high school football game. I’m proud of these guys,” Boyer said.

Aydin Lambert gave Byron a boost by connecting on all six of his extra point kicks, giving the Tigers a 3-point plus differential, forcing Williamsville to make an extra score to win.

The first half was more like a ping pong game than football, as each team went back-and-forth in scoring.

“Both of our offenses were on fire in the first half,” Kunz said. “We knew we could score. But what mattered was whether we could get a stop.”

Stickler had l9l yards rushing in the first half, along with scores of l0, 40 and 6l. Snodgrass added the other touchdown on a 3-yard run, as the Tigers did not pass until midway in the third quarter.

Williamsville was effective mixing pass (l7l yards) and run (l62) in putting up five touchdowns in the first 24 minutes. That was more than anyone had put up against Byron in an entire game.

“They had a great spread attack throwing and running,” Boyer said.

The Tigers ended up with 5l7 yards of total offense and did everything they needed to do to win. The only problem was that l4-0 Williamsville did a little more in claiming the school’s first state title in any boys sport.

“I don’t know if this is the biggest (win) in school history, but it’s right up there,” said Kunz, whose 2014 squad took second to Wilmington 20-17.

The 555 total yards by Williamsville broke the old 3A record of 542. Their seven touchdowns also tied the record.

“This one is going to sting for awhile,” Byron assistant coach Sean Considine said.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Boys Basketball Polo 44, Amboy 35: Tucker Mumford dropped in 20 points as the Marcos pulled away from the Clippers in Ashton.

Casen Cherry led LaMoille-Ohio with 14 points, and Luke Moore added 11. The Lions will take on AFC in the third-place game.

Oregon 60, Aquin 57: The Hawks led 37-28 at halftime of a semifinal at the Blackhawk Center, then held off a Bulldog rally to advance to the title game at their own tournament.

Trey Woolsey had 19 points, and Noah Campos scored 12 to lead Oregon, which led 49-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

Will Gustafson’s 16 points paced Aquin, and Ben Hunziker added 12.

Girls Basketball Polo 50, West Carroll 39: The Marcos got a strong second-half push to win on the road.

Mallory Patterson scored 18 points to lead Polo, 14 of which came in the second half, including a pair of 3-pointers. Becca Wagner added 12 points, and Lindee Poper scored eight.

Polo led 11-5 after one quarter, but trailed 21-15 at the half before rallying with 16 third-quarter points and 19 in the fourth quarter.

Genoa-Kingston 41, Forreston 32: The Lady Cardinals trailed 17-15 at the half but the Cogs put 10 on the board

in the third period to Forreston’s five en route to the win. Alexus Houston led Forreston with 14 points.

Wrestling Polo falls twice: The Marcos were defeated 42-36 by Wheaton Academy, and 33-30 by Genoa-Kingston in a triangular.

ithout a doubt, the best of the eight state championship football games was Byron vs Williamsville, a 46-42 thriller in favor of the Bullets.

It was the second straight year Byron lost to an athletic team capable of making big plays.

After the Tigers took a 10-point lead with 4:32 left, it looked the firstplace trophy was soon be loaded on the bus for the short 45-minute drive back to Byron.

However, quarterback Conor McCormick, a converted defensive end as a freshman, had other ideas.

Just like Alek Bundy of Monticello did last year, McCormick, along with receiver Brendon Bishop, running back Grant Ripperda came up with one play after another to counteract the powerful ball-control offense of the Tigers.

One thing I’ve learned over the decades of watching running teams like Rochelle, Oregon and Byron is a reduced capacity for making big plays.

Spread offenses that mix run and

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert pass at a high level are able to pull it off and win games they probably shouldn’t have.

Then there is Stillman Valley.

They are not a spread offense, but they managed to come up with big plays to win many a playoff game on their way to numerous state titles. Â On the other hand, Lena-Winslow could have run a quarterback sneak on every play and in the 1A title game and still won.

The bigger question is where this year’s group stands among the greatest 1A teams in the state.

Some have said they would have won any of the four championship games contested on Nov. 29.

In 4A, powerhouse Richmond-Burton is completely out of Forreston’s league and the BNC is thankful the Rockets are no longer in their league

anymore.

Le-Win probably could have beaten the 4A runner-up Murphysboro.

A really fun game would be against Byron in 3A. Toss up? Maybe, but I’ll still take the Tigers.

Le-Win would have won 2A, but Sterling Newman has always come up with ways to win a game. Never count the mentally proficient Comets out of anything, but it should also be noted they lost to Morrison, who couldn’t even get out of the 1A quarterfinals.

After the Le-Win game, I had a chance to chat at length with Sean Ormiston and Isaiah Bruce about last year’s Forreston game.

They both admitted to overlooking the Cardinals. Ormiston said Le-Win wasn’t mentally prepared.

Bruce said they weren’t focused in practice that week.

Certainly Le-Win didn’t need any extra motivation from the Forreston loss to be 2019 state champs, but perhaps they learned a life lessen.

Call me a homer on this one, but I believe Forreston would have given

Le-Win its closest test in the playoffs. It certainly would have been much closer than the regular-season blowout.

With nine returning starters, including an excellent sophomore in QB Luke Benson and Iowa recruit Gennings Dunker, Le-Win will be the choice to win 1A next year.

Byron loses virtually its entire starting line-up and will be hardpressed to enjoy the success of these past two years, though they do have a large roster of players to pick from.

Forreston is another team losing a lot. They could be as thin as they’ve been in recent memory, but Forreston has a tendency to be deceivingly good.

With a much larger senior class than before, Oregon should be improved. It is still a numbers game for Hawks.

Stillman Valley may be the team to beat in the Big Northern, with several juniors having played key roles.

Ormiston, Le-Win dominant in state title run

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It didn’t seem fair for Moweaqua Central A&M to only be allowed 11 players on defense and LenaWinslow to get more than two downs.

In a physical running attack that required multiple tacklers on every play and rarely needed more than two tries to get first downs, LenaWinslow put an exclamation mark on an undefeated season with a 58-20 win over the Raiders (13-1) in the 1A state title game on Nov. 29.

Sean Ormiston scored a 1A-record six touchdowns, and also broke former teammate Rahveon Valentine’s all-time NUIC rushing record (4,649 yards) in leading the Panthers to their fourth championship in 10 years.

Since being upset by Forreston in last year’s semifinals, the Panthers have been on a mission.

“After losing, we busted out butts all summer,” said Ormiston. “We overlooked them, and it bit us.”

Kade Chrisman caught his second touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 58-12 lead.

That made it the 11th running clock of the year for the Panthers, and consideration has to be given to

It was a 66-yard touchdown pass to Chrisman on the first drive that demonstrated A&M’s willingness to sell out on the run. There was no one

within 20 yards of Chrisman, as he caught the pass from sophomore QB Luke Benson.

“We saw that they played to the run so hard,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “Running the football like we did and the play-action pass, it’s tough to stop.”

Even with A&M stacking the box, Ormiston went 23 yards to make it 14-0 in the first quarter. With allstate QB Connor Heaton (17-for-33, 192 yards, 1 INT) leading them back, the Raiders pulled to within 26-12 at halftime.

Heaton, one of four returning starters from a state third-place basketball team that also play football, had a 5-yard TD pass and 8-yard run, the latter with 15 seconds left in the second quarter.

“I thought we were in good shape at half,” Weakly said.

Ormiston had other ideas. The 6-foot, 206-pound fullback had three touchdowns in the third quarter.

Fellow senior strongman Isaiah Bruce set up the second score by forcing a fumble. Both played key roles in Le-Win’s 2017 state title.

Decorated Byron seniors go out in state shootout

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com During the second quarter of Byron’s 46-42, 3A State Championship loss to Williamsville, all-state Tiger lineman Tyler Elsbury was down on the field with an injury.

Elsbury laid on the field at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb for a few minutes. He sat out a few plays.

And then he returned, played both ways and blocked for 449 total rushing yards.

“It’s a grind,” Elsbury said. “I’m the youngest of five boys in a family, so I’m used to it. I just took a shot to my lower leg and it definitely hurt. In my head I was just thinking I’d play for these guys, so I just had to suck it up and come back out on the field for them.”

Williamsville (14-0) got Byron’s (13-2) best shot on Friday afternoon. Two of Byron’s other top seniors, running backs Isaac Stickler and Drake Snodgrass, put up video game numbers in the contest. Stickler racked up 264 yards rushing and four touchdowns, while Snodgrass added 163 yards and two touchdowns.

The two runners punched back at Williamsville after each time it scored. The Bullets’ coaches could be heard from the press box yelling out which plays were coming from the Tigers’ offense, but they still couldn’t be stopped.

“It was just execution,” Elsbury said. “It doesn’t really matter what play is called. It was just outstanding how our offense was working today.”

Elsbury was seen taking on triple teams early in the game. Late in the game, he acted as a road grader running through the secondary to block for Stickler, who was tucked in behind him.

“Following Tyler is like following a truck,” Stickler said. “You just go behind him and let him do his thing.”

Stickler finished the season with 1,501 yards and 19 touchdowns, while Snodgrass finished with 1,200 yards and 10 scores. Elsbury will move on to Iowa to play for the Hawkeyes next fall.

Byron head coach Jeff Boyer was emotional about his senior class as a whole following the game.

“I love each and every one of these kids,” Boyer said. “I’m so proud of them. We spent so much time together in the weight room and in the offseason and throughout the season. Words can’t even describe how much this group of kids means to me.

The entire senior class.”

Byron failed for the second time in as many years downstate to try and win its first title since 1999.

“It’s hard to swallow,” Elsbury said. “But we all have to deal with it together and when we do that, I think it’ll be alright. We’ll look back at it. Not a lot of teams can say they made it to the state championship back to back.”

Nov. 18 At 5:02 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of S. 4th and W. Washington Streets involving a 2013 Nissan driven by Joanne L. Hitchcock, 78, of Oregon, and a 2014 GMC driven by Tyler P. Haas, 20, of Sterling. No citations were issued.

Nov. 21 At 3:20 p.m., police took one 16-yearold male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offense of battery which had occurred on a school bus. The juvenile was released into his parent’s custody with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s office for juvenile delinquency.

Nov. 19 Cortez D. Horton, 45, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 7:40 p.m. for driving while license suspended. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian Van Vickle reports the following police activity Nov. 19 At 5 p.m. deputies responded to the 5000 block of North Killbuck Road for a report of a disturbance. After a short investigation, Christopher F. Baker, 29, of Monroe Center, was arrested for assault. Baker was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Nov. 27 Enrique Vasquez, 27, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Vasquez posted $622 as a full cash bond and does not have to return to court.

Amber Keener, 35, of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Keener posted $3,455 as a full cash bond and does not have to return to court.

Jay Moore, 45, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Moore was released on a recognizance bond and is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 30.

David Strebing (age, town not provided), was arrested for retail theft. Strebing was transported to the Ogle County Jail and appeared in court on Nov. 27. He was given a recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9.

Bonnie Demaio, 45, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:16 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop at the intersection of Mulford and Edson roads. Demaio was transported to

the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Tonya Carlson, 40, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:38 p.m. for driving while license suspended, driving while under the influence, aggravated driving while under the influence, improper lane use and improper turn signal following a traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois and Third streets in Oregon.

Carlson was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond pending a court appearance.

Nov. 28 At approximately 5:30 a.m., deputies responded to a two vehicle accident that occurred in the 4000 block of South Illinois 26 in Polo. After an investigation, Jordan M. Asbury, 21, of Sterling, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Asbury was southbound on Illinois 26 and ran into another vehicle that was also southbound.

No injuries requiring medical transport were reported by anyone involved in this incident.

Asbury was transported to the Ogle County Jail, posted $3,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 24.

Nov. 29 Heather Stoikes, (age and town not provided), of Freeport, was arrested at 5:49 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of South Freeport Road.

Nov. 30 Caly Jiles, 37 of Mt. Morris, and Jason Armould, 50, of Rockford, were arrested at 1:17 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of North Illinois 2. Both subjects were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

Willem Earlywine, 33, of Davenport, Iowa, was arrested at 1:45 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 8000 block of North barker Road. Earlywine was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

At approximately 2:07 p.m., deputies, along with the Polo Fire Department and Polo EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle accident in the 17000 block of West Illinois 64. After an investigation it was learned that Cynthia R. Farmer, 63, of Savanna, lost control of her vehicle and entered the south side ditch. The vehicle came to rest after striking a tree.

Farmer was transported to FHN hospital in Freeport for non life threatening injuries. Farmer also received a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an

accident.

Dyers towing removed the vehicle from the location.

Dec. 1 At 10:58 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a car in the ditch on Deer Path Road at Razorville Road. Deputies located the vehicle in the 3000 block of North Blackhawk Road in the east ditch on its top.

The driver, Aaron Harper, 26 of Byron, was checked by ambulance personnel and signed a refusal form. After an investigation, Harper was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Harper was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 2 Joshua C. Marsack, 41, of Fenton, was arrested at 5:50 p.m. for obstructing identification and on a valid DuPage County warrant following a traffic stop in the 15000 block of West White Oak Road for an equipment violation. Marsack was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.
