Candlelight vigil honors slain mother and son More than 100 turn out for event for Maggie and Amos Meyer

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com More than 100 people attended a candlelight vigil Oct. 19 that marked the second anniversary of the unsolved murders of Byron resident Margaret “Maggie” Meyer and her 3-year-old son Amos.

Luminaries, made by Maggie’s students at the Chana Education Center, lined the sidewalks at the Ogle County Courthouse where friends and family gathered to pray and remember the two, as well as bring awareness to the ongoing investigation.

Among those attending were Maggie’s parents, Donald and Luann Rosko, of Mt. Morris.

Maggie’s friend and colleague Lynn Kalnins, assistant principal at the Chana Education Center, said students and staff held a time of remembrance earlier in the day.

The students purposely made colorful luminaries to remember the two.

“They wanted there to be color in them because they didn’t think it was right for people who brought such color

and joy to the lives of others to have just plain white luminaries,” she said.

“It’s no surprise that this is a day that many of us at the Chana Education Center dread,” Kalnins said. “Two years ago I had to look into the faces of my co-workers and students…and I had to say some words I never want to ever have to speak of again. I don’t like to revisit that day mentally so therefore I’m going to share with you some things that happened today at our school. I’d like to share what she meant to them.”

She went on to read messages from Maggie’s students and co-workers.

“Ms. Meyer was something special,” wrote one student. “She was someone I could go to no matter what. She was our school mom.”

“When Ms. Meyer and I met I didn’t think I would like her,” another wrote.

“I thought she was being tough on me.

What I soon realized that when she was being tough, it was not to be mean, but to challenge me to be better.”

“Everyone she met she impacted,” wrote a colleague. “I have never seen one woman change so many people’s lives. She genuinely cared.”

Christopher Pearce, a close friend, was tearful as he addressed the crowd.

“Tonight we gather as a community to remember the two most beautiful people, mother and son, Maggie and Amos,” he said, before reading a Hebrew poem

adapted for the occasion.

His mother Katherine Pearce said Maggie inspired others.

“Her motto was for us all to be our best. She instilled that in her students, be your best, do your best and make the world a better place,” she said. “If each of us lives into that for Maggie and Amos their love and their lives will continue… their spirits are with us.”

Kalnins summed up, “Together we continue to hope and to pray that the individuals who took them away from us will not go unpunished.”

Emergency crews arrived the Meyer home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive just after 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2016 to find the house consumed by a fire that was determined to be deliberately set.

Maggie, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home, and Amos was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, Byron Police Department, Illinois State Police, and the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s office, are actively investigating the case and are optimistic that it will be solved.

“We’re confident we’re going to come to a resolution for the family and friends,” State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said recently.

Three years ago, Angela Warner had to use a wheelchair because of her bad hips, and nearly was blind from cataracts in both eyes.

As she walked to the stage Oct. 17 to receive the Robert Moehle Personal Achievement Award, evidence of those ailments was long gone.

Tom Wadsworth summarized her progress in a few simple words: “She looks like a new woman!”

“Me?!” she replied.

“Yes, you!,” he retorted.

Warner was one of 11 award winners recognized at the 49th annual Village of Progress awards banquet.

As Wadsworth presented her with her plaque, the nearly 300 people at St. Mary’s Learning Center erupted in applause.

“Angela has endured a lot of changes in the past four years, and she has conquered every one of them,” he said.

Warner moved into the village’s Hammer Terrace from a nursing home in Rockford in April of 2014.

Moehle, for whom the award is named, was a member of the VOP board of directors for 36 years, starting in year one; he was the longest-serving board member in its history.

The award is given to those who enrolled in the village’s developmental training program and, in spite of obstacles, exhibited persistence and a willingness to succeed.

Scott and Joyce Stephens have been involved with the VOP bicycling fundraiser since its early stages in 2015. With their help, the Tour of Scenic Ogle County has attracted more than 300 riders a year from around the Midwest, and has raised more than $35,000 for the Village of Progress Foundation.

Fred Smith Competitive Employment Award

John Miller has been part of the VOP family since his childhood, when it opened in 1969 and he was enrolled in the day care center. Over the years he has accomplished a wide variety of jobs, serving the community and working at the Village Cleaning Service at the Oregon Coliseum.

Carly Heller Special Olympian of the Year

Carla Grove also began attending the village in 1996, and now works in the developmental training department, where she is responsible for a variety of in-house jobs and is known as the in-house secretary.

Rick Hahn Business of the Year Award Since 1988, KSB Hospital in Dixon has supported the village, especially since 2010, when it played an integral role in supporting many of the village’s activities that promote a healthy lifestyle, by sponsoring the annual golf play day and the Tour of Scenic Ogle County bicycle fundraiser, among other things.

Robert Stahl Friendship Award

Kelli Nichols enrolled in 2008 as one of the students in the VOP’s transition program with the schools.

She has been a friendly greeter to many newcomers, helping them become familiar with the routines and inviting everyone to join her at lunch and on breaks.

Larry Young & Friends Charities is made up of individuals in the business and sporting worlds. Since 2000, the group has and the VOP Foundation have raised more than $200,000 through the annual John Herrmann Golf Play Day.

Village of Progress Foundation scholarships

Applicants must be Ogle County residents in their senior year in high school or full-time college student, and must have a disability, or be majoring in an area related to the field. This year’s recipients are: Aubrey Headon, a senior at Rochelle Township High School who has maintained a 3.9 GPA, has cerebral palsy, is a paralympic All American athlete in track and field, holds three state titles for swimmers with disabilities and is on the Rockford Chariots wheelchair basketball team. She also has raised money for combat veterans. Aubrey will study physical therapy in college.

Brandi Ferrari, also a Rochelle Township High senior who plans to attend Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, is dyslexic. She is involved in softball and track and field and has participated in Key Club and student council. She also volunteers at Rochelle Township Library.

Arynn Mathieu, a senior at Byron High School, and has achieved a 4.12 GPA while also managing dyslexia and generalized anxiety disorder.

She plans to explore therapeutic recreation and recreational therapy in college.

Dispatcher oversight was to blame for the death of Sarah Kamp, 32, her husband, Jason Kamp, of Byron, said in his wrongful death suit.

She was pregnant with their second child and on her way to a prenatal checkup just after 7 a.m. on May 20, 2013, when she drove into the intersection of Rock City and Montague roads, on the Ogle-Stephenson County border, without stopping, and hit a car carrying two other women.

Sarah Kamp The sign blew down in a severe thunderstorm the night before, and a motorist called 911 shortly after 5 a.m. to report it, but the dispatcher took another call and forgot to notify anyone.

The case settled on or about Oct. 4, Stephenson County Court records show. The settlement order is set to be filed Nov. 1.

“This lawsuit was the result of a terrible tragedy, and I’m sure that the ongoing litigation was painful for the family of Sarah Kamp and her unborn child,” Stephenson County State’s Attorney Carl Larson said in a statement.

“I am very sorry for their loss, and this sentiment is shared by everyone within Stephenson County government. I’m glad the matter could be settled short of trial, and I hope the closing of this chapter will help bring the Kamp family closer to peace in this matter.”

At the time of her death, Kamp taught sophomore and senior English at Polo High, while her husband taught physics and chemistry. He left shortly after her death.

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER

Donations needed for Thanksgiving dinners The New Life Community Center is seeking donations to provide turkey boxes to its patrons for Thanksgiving.

Each box cost $16 and supplies a full Thanksgiving meal to those who could not otherwise afford it.

Donations can be dropped off at the center on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or mailed to PO Box 66, Forreston, IL 61030.

The center is located on Ill. 72 in the former fire station building across from the Forreston Post Office.

Turkey boxes are provided to the center’s patrons each year at no cost to them through the support of local churches, private donations, and community involvement.

“We want to thank those in advance who help this cause and thank those who continually support the New Life Community Center in our mission to bring both spiritual and tangible needs to our Forreston community,” said Tim Hotchkiss, pastor of North Grove Evangelical Church.

The New Life Community Cen-

ter offers support to Forreston and the surrounding area with the food pantry and thrift store.

An average of 85 families per month are provided with food.

The thrift store offers up-scale clothing and household items for all with the proceeds going back into the center to help offset the operating costs.

Today the church women serve their famous turkey casserole family style with all the trimmings of cranberry salad, rolls, relishes and diner’s choice of homemade pie. Seconds are encouraged!

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 6 to 12. The meal is free for anyone 5 and younger or 99 and older.

Carry out dinners are also available for an additional 50 cents.

of trendy, useful, and fun items.

The Leaf River Lions Club will sponsor a Halloween costume contest on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Building.

Weather permitting, the contest may be held outside in the Bertolet Park.

Costumes will be judged in the following classes: 0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5 years and kindergarten, grades 1-5, middle school, high school and adult.

First place in each division will receive $5, second place $3, and every entry will get $1.

Everyone in costume will receive a free hot dog lunch, including chips and lemonade.

Hot dogs will be available for purchase at 3:30 p.m.

The Lions Club will also sponsor a Trunk ’n’ Treat event on Halloween beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Folk to chair park & recreation association board The Illinois Park & Recreation Association (IPRA) has elected Erin Folk, executive director of the Oregon Park District, as its 2019 ChairElect.

She will take office on Jan. 25, 2019 at the IPRA Annual Business Meeting and will become IPRA’s Chair in January of 2020.

Folk entered the field in 2002 after completing her undergraduate degree in Recreation Administration at Eastern Illinois University.

She joined the Lombard Park District, and been with the Oregon Park District since 2006.

She has been an IPRA member

since 2002, a member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Foundation Board in 2016, and IPRA North West Region Representative in 2017 and 2018. Erin is also a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP).

“I am honored to have been selected as the 2019 Chair Elect and 2020 Chair and look forward to working with the IPRA staff and board as we continue to provide positive experiences for our members,” Folk said regarding her new role.

COLLEGE NEWS Local students receive HCC scholarships Several area students were among those awarded scholarships Oct. 14 by the Highland Community College Foundation.

The foundation distributed more than $390,000 to Highland students for the

2018 academic year with more than 300 people in attendance at its annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony in the Student/Conference Center at Highland Community College, Freeport.

Get ready for a strange event filled with stories of deadly ghosts, peculiar people, strange deaths, and mysterious creatures lurking the back roads and UFOs buzzing the skies.

Chad Lewis will present “The Bizarre History of Illinois” on Friday, Nov. 2 at two local libraries.

He will share his stories at the Oregon Public Library at 3:30 p.m. and the Mt. Morris Public Library at 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to all ages.

Lewis has been featured on the Discovery Channel’s A Haunting, William Shatner’s Weird or What, ABC’s Scariest Places on Earth, along with being a frequent contributor on Ripley’s Believe it or Not Radio.

With a master’s degree in Psychology, Lewis has authored more than 20 books in the strange and unusual.

The more bizarre the legend, the Chad Lewis will present “The Bizarre History of Illinois” on Friday, more likely it is he will be there.

Join Northwest Illinois Audubon on a visit to Castle Rock State Park on Sunday, Oct. 28 to view and learn about bedrock geology of northwest Illinois.

The field trip starts at 1 p.m. at the Castle Rock scenic overlook located along the Rock River about a mile south of the main park entrance on Ill. 2 south of Oregon.

After Castle Rock, the group will travel to a quarry near Elkhorn Creek Preserve to look at the Platteville dolostone.

Led by retired Highland Community College geology instructor Steve Simpson, the three rock layers exposed in this part of the state are St. Peter sandstone, Platteville dolostone, and Galena dolostone.

They were deposited during the Late Ordovician period 460 to 445 million years ago and reflect the changing rock types and fossils as the sea level gradually rose during this period.

No fee will be charged to participate and the public is welcome to attend.

Northern Illinois University’s Steelband will present its fall 2018 concert on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building on the NIU Campus in DeKalb.

The event will be dedicated to the memories of steelband legends, Dr. Ellie Mannette and Ken “Professor�

Philmore, both of whom recently passed away.

The program will also feature the All-University Steelband and Community School for the Arts (CSA) Steelband, as well the NIU Steelpan Studio.

The NIU Steelband will host Professor of Harp, Faye Seeman, as its guest artist.

Seeman is principal harpist of the renowned Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra and adjunct professor of harp studies at Wheaton College and Northern Illinois University.

She has distinguished herself as one of the most versatile harpists in the Midwest, and, along with several colleagues from the Chicago jazz community, has established the

“ZigZag� Jazz Harp Quartet (harp, piano, bass and drums).

Teague, have also formed the harp and steelpan duo Pangelic, a collaborative effort dedicated to breaking down musical boundaries.

About the Steelband Created in 1973 by G. Allan O’Connor, it was the first active steelband formed in an American university and has performed throughout the United States and around the world.

Reported cases jump from 7 to 19 from 2017 to 2018

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department is working with the Illinois Department of Public Health to address higher than expected rates of gonorrhea in Ogle County. OCHD Administrator Kyle Auman said the department has seen a 171 percent increase in cases of gonorrhea, a reportable sexually transmitted disease, in Ogle County from seven cases in 2017 to 19 so far this year.

He said Tuesday that the cause of the increase has not yet been determined. “It’s pretty early on in the investigation,� Auman said. “We don’t have any hypotheses at this point.

It’s a complex issue, and there are a

lot of variables.�

Each case is being investigated by a OCHD nurse, he said, and findings are then entered into a state data base.

The health department is also working closely with area doctors. “We want to get the word out to the public so they can take steps to protect themselves,� Auman said.  People who contract the disease may be asymptomatic or symptoms may not present for several weeks or months. When present, symptoms can include burning or pain with urination, penile or vaginal discharge, and pain or swelling in the testicles of men. Rectal infection can also cause rectal pain, bleeding, or discharge, and throat infection can cause a sore throat.

Gonorrhea is caused by infection with the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium, and it can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Gonorrhea most common-

ly infects the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in women and men, but can also infect the throat and rectum.

Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems in both women and men. In women, gonorrhea can spread into the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause a serious infection of the reproductive organs called pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause abdominal pain and fever and lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and an increase in the risk of ectopic pregnancy (an abnormal pregnancy that develops outside of the uterus). In men, gonorrhea may cause inflammation of the testicles and surrounding tissues and can also lead to infertility.

Prevention for gonorrhea includes abstinence, getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases before beginning a relationship with a new partner, limiting the number of sex partners, and using

condoms every time. Treating infections with appropriate antibiotics is also important for stopping the spread of gonorrhea.

The Ogle County Health Department recommends that everyone who is sexually active should talk with their healthcare provider about being tested for STDs, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, and anybody who may have been exposed to gonorrhea through a sex partner should seek care immediately for testing and treatment. OCHD’s staff can provide testing and treatment at two locations 907 W. The Cards downed Christian Life in two games, 25-16 and 25-11, in the Forreston High School gym.

“It was good to come out and get all the jitters out,” said Forreston coach Shannon Williams.

Senior Katie Erdmann led her team with 17 kills and two aces.

The win moves the Cardinals into Thursday’s regional final where they will face Rockford Lutheran who downed Winnebago 25-16, 25-15 in the second game on Tuesday.

Like a pinball, Jarod Kempel bounced off Polo Marcos to the point that it appeared that the Eastland-Pearl City running back was more interested in finding another defender to run over than galloping toward the end zone.

Eventually, Kempel’s shoulders squared south and, in the matter of moments, he traversed over half the field for the touchdown that ignited the running clock during Friday’s 42-14 win for EPC over the Marcos.

“I have to be honest, there are times out there that I don’t really know what I am doing,” Kempel said. “I’m just hitting people and trying to keep my feet going. The only thing I am thinking is ‘Drive my legs.’”

Kempel’s 61-yard touchdown with 41.6 seconds left in the third quarter wrapped up a dominant

performance by the Wildcatz in a victory that capped a 9-0 regular season.

Kempel finished with 157 yards on seven carries and had touchdown runs of 51 and 2 yards.

His twin brother, Jayden, intercepted Polo’s Braiden Soltow on the Marcos’ first drive.

“They set the tone early,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said. “That’s a very physical team, and the defense is well-coached.”

Polo scored on back-to-back plays in the fourth quarter. Soltow scored on a 11-yard touchdown run. Then on the ensuing kickoff, Jace Coffey stripped Travis Kaney of the ball and took it 20 yards for a touchdown.

The Marcos, who will play 8-man football next season, were the second-to-last team to make it in the 256-team playoff field.

They travel to Princeville on Friday evening in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

The rout was reminiscent of nearly every other NUIC win the Cardinals had in claiming third place behind champ EPC and Lena-Winslow.

Those three teams were the class of the league and other than a slow start against Du-Pec in the first half and struggles against Le-Win and EPC, Forreston easily rolled through the opposition.

It was the eighth straight year of seven wins or more in the regular season.

“It’s no secret we had a tough beginning of the season with our schedule,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “We felt we didn’t play some of our best football early and we want to show we are a different team now.”

Forreston had Amboy on its heels all of the first half, putting up eight scores on nine possessions in only 10:46. That’s how quick and efficient the offense was in averaging nearly 10 yards a carry.

“We still have another level of play that we haven’t reached yet,” Zick said. “We’ve seen glimpses of it, but we need to consistently play at the highest level we can.”

Other than 259 yards gained passing, Amboy wasn’t able to muster anything on the ground. Quarterback Mitch McLaughlin was 12-for30 with one interception.

Badertscher led Forreston with 124 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Rogers was 7-102, Christensen 5-76, Kelsey 4-50 and Mulder 5-18. Another plus was only three penalties.

Forreston will host Kirkland Hiawatha (6-3) in the first round of the IHSA playoffs at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Other than a calf injury to Gabe Owens, the team is as healthy as they’ve been all year.

“We aren’t a young team in age, but going into the season, we were limited on game experience,” Zick said. “As the players gained more experience and been in game situations, we’ve been improving our technique and understanding of adjustment. We are playing our best ball of the year right now and looking forward to the opportunity the playoffs give us.”

“No. 34 (Kyle Thompson) is a strong runner and also a key target for passing out of the backfield,” Zick said. “He will definitely present us the biggest issues with their offense. Their defense is aggressive, so we’ll go right after them and see what happens.”

Playing in the very weak Northeastern football conference, Kirkland finished third at 5-2. Unlike Forreston, the Hawks have a small roster with only 13 juniors and seniors.

Polo falls to Newman at regional

BY ADAM FEINER AFEINER@SAUKVALLEY.COM With a regional game already under its belt, Polo came out swinging as the underdog in Tuesday night’s 1A Newman Regional semifinal against host Newman.

An early surge was enough to seize a brief lead, but the Comets blasted their way past the Marcos with efficient offense in a 25-13, 25-11 victory.

Becca Wagner’s stuff block tied the first set at 5-all, and a Newman hitting error gave Polo (11-18-3) its only lead of the match.

“It was the carry-over from [Monday] night and the weekend,” Polo coach Rhiannon Coffey said. “We showed what we could do. But what stopped was our mental capacity, and the intensity level wasn’t there. That’s happened in the past, and normally we can come back from that, but there were too many things not in our favor.”

On Monday, six straight points early in

the third set gave Polo a healthy lead against Milledgeville, but it was the Marcos’ resiliency that helped them to a 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 victory against the rival Missiles.

No play quite exemplified Polo’s hustle quite like the third set’s 10th point.

Milledgeville’s Alyvia Woodard hammered a hit, and the ball ricocheted off the hands of Becca Wagner toward the north bleachers at Newman. The Marcos scrambled enough to get the ball over the net, and Cassie Bushman’s diving dig resulted in a huge kill by Nicole Boelens to give Polo an 8-2 lead.

“I felt like that was huge for momentum,” Boelens said. “That really carried us for the rest of the match. We haven’t had a lot of that in the past, so it’s good for our program.”

Polo captured its first tournament win in 16 years over the weekend, going 2-0-2 to take the AFC Tournament.

Alex Dusing did a little bit of everything for Polo, tallying 21 assists, 13 digs, seven kills and two blocks.

Nicole Boelens added 11 kills, seven digs and two aces, while Becca Wagner had 10 kills, three blocks and two digs.

Clark recorded a match-high 30 digs for the Marcos, Bushman chipped in 19 digs and three assists, and Patterson pitched in nine assists, nine digs, three kills and an ace. Blake was strong at the net with six kills, two assists and two blocks.

Cardinals have to be happy with playoff seedings T

he Forreston football team has to be very happy with the IHSA playoff seedings.

Seeded No 6 in 1A, the Cardinals are opposite of favorites Aurora Christian and Lena-Winslow. The earliest they could meet either is the semifinals.

Only one point separated Forreston from having to face Aurora in the first round. No. 9 seed Aurora won its final game 34-33, giving them a 6-3 record instead of 5-4.

With the amount of playoff points they had, a 5-4 record would have made them No. 11 seed and sent them to Forreston.

Considering that Aurora’s only losses were to schools in the 4A and 5A playoffs, they are at a different level than what is seen in 1A. However, with an enrollment of 233 and no post-season wins the last four years, Aurora is not subject to the IHSA multiplier or success factor for private schools.

Here they are back in 1A for the first time since the early 2000s. I remember covering AFC as they beat Aurora 22-0 in the 2003 playoffs.

With a small roster and smattering of fans, I actually felt sorry for Aurora.

My sympathy was unfounded as former NFL player Don Beebe took over the program the following year and eventually guided it to a pair of 3A state titles and a runner-up in 4A. Those of us in Oregon still feel the pain from consecutive playoff losses to the Aurora.

After all the success Aurora has had, it seems absurd they are in the 1A playoffs. But, that is the system in place by the IHSA and no matter how they tweaked it over the years, it is impossible to get true equity in competition.

Instead, Forreston hosts Kirkland Hiawatha, the antithesis to Aurora Christian. Kirkland’s only athletic claim to fame is being the hometown of former White Sox manager and MLB player Gene Lamont.

According to the IHSA website, Kirkland made the football playoffs in 1984 and 1987 under Polo native Terry Jenkins and then went another 30 years without making it.

They have only one playoff win in school history and likely will not be making it number two against Forreston.

To be fair, Kirkland is improved this year, but is nowhere near the pedigree of the Forreston Cardinals, who have been averaging 48 points a game in its seven wins.

Looking ahead to round two, don’t be surprised if Forreston’s opponent is Fulton, not undefeated Milledgeville. At the risk of offending my friends in the NUIC Upstate, that division was down.

Polo got a scare just prior to the pairings being announced when two playoff points were taken away by the IHSA. It was determined that week two opponent, Edwardsville Metro East Lutheran, played a couple of unsanctioned foes from Missouri and those wins would not be counted.

With 256 berths available, the Marcos snuck in at 255. A year ago, they missed by two spots of getting it.

Even though they go on the road to face No. 1 seed Princeville (9-0), it is a feel-good story that Polo is even in the playoffs considering they have so few varsity players and are in the final year as an 11-man team.

Another plus for Polo is getting away from the NUIC and playing in what promises to be a pretty cool rural environment. It will be a fun trip for the Marcos.

Credit to both Polo and Forreston for playing night games instead of the standard daytime fare. This is when high-school football in meant to be played and allows for more fans and media to partake.

Denny Diduch was a big proponent of this, going as far as asking fellow NUIC coaches to consider spreading game times around as much as possible so that fans and media outlets could benefit. When every game is played at 1 p.m. on Saturday, that’s a drag.

For the first time since 1995, Stark County will not be in the post season. I bring this up because of the influence Stark County has had against the NUIC over those many years. Certainly, Forreston and Polo remember recent playoff games against them.

What’s going on with Stark County is the same thing affecting other small schools - maintaining enough quality personnel on a yearly basis.

It’s tough for the little towns, of which the NUIC has the three smallest schools in the 1A playoffs in Orangeville (102), Polo and Milledgeville (160 each).

Problems for Byron?

Byron (9-0) has been ranked No. 1 in 3A for most of the year and could be in line for a trip downstate after suffering a heartbreaking loss to eventual champ Elmhurst IC last year. Two problems for the Tigers, though.

Its first round opponent is No. 16 seed Rock Island Alleman. The Pioneers play schools in the 1,000-3,000 enrollment range, so that record in misleading. That’s tough draw for No. 1 seed Byron.

The second concerns is No. 2 seed Chicago Dunbar (8-1). Chicago Public League teams are a mixed bag, going from undisciplined and sloppy to extremely talented.

Who really knows how good the Mightymen are, but they did shut out a 5A playoff team 36-0 to end the season.

Stillman Valley gets Dixon in the first round, but with powerhouse Elmhurst IC waiting in the wings, it only gets harder for whoever wins.

However, after seeing Stillman upset Aurora Christian 28-26 five years ago, anything is possible.

After losing two games this year on last-second passes, Rochelle needed to beat highly-favored Kaneland to reach 5 wins and get in the playoffs.

That’s exactly what the Hubs did in a stunner to all the playoff prognosticators who had counted them out. Like Stillman, Rochelle gets a conference foe (Sycamore) in round one, but then looming in the next round is a private school juggernaut in Lombard Montini.

An eye exam is a good idea, especially if things are starting to look a little fuzzy around the edges.

OBITUARIES NANCY KUBAT Nancy Kubat, 84, of Oregon, died on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 at her home surrounded by family.

Nancy was born on Aug. 19, 1934 and grew up in Riverside, with her now-deceased parents, Milton and Mildred Child, and her surviving younger sister, Lucille.

She graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School and went on to attend college at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.

Nancy and George Kubat were married on Jan. 4, 1954 at a Methodist Church in Geneva.

Nancy graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree

in Education and a minor in Art. Later she went on to earn a master’s degree in Special Education.

George and Nancy moved to Oregon, where Nancy became an elementary teacher at Ruby Nash School.

Nancy later pioneered a new position as a county-wide Special Education resource teacher, focusing on Learning Disabilities in early education.

An avid reader, upon retiring, Nancy supported the Oregon Public Library by serving on its board of directors.

Donald E. Shrader, 82, of Polo, died on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at KSB Hospital in Dixon.  Don was born on Dec. 16, 1935, in Freeport, the son of Max and Hazel (Miller) Shrader.  He was a veteran of the United States Army.  Don worked in sales for Select Sires, serving farmers for over 20 years until his retirement. He enjoyed keeping up with his grand-

Michael Dante Smith, Jr., 21, of Rock Island, was stopped for speeding on at 11:17 a.m. on Interstate 88 eastbound at milepost 32 in Whiteside County and charged with driving while license suspended. Smith was released on an I-bond.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Oct. 16 Nicholas J. Schleicher, 35, of Malta, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for a probation violation.

Schleicher’s bond was set at $100,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Oct. 17 At about 6 p.m., deputies responded to the 13000 block of Illinois 72 for a report of a pickup truck versus a combine.

It was learned that a 2006 Dodge truck driven by Joathan Young, 37, of Stillman Valley was traveling east on Illinois 72 when he failed to reduce his speed causing him to hit the rear of a CASE Combine driven by Paul Gibson, 53, of Stillman Valley.

Young was extricated by fire and EMS and transported to Swedish American Hospital for minor injuries.

Deputies were assisted on scene by LSR Fire, Stillman Fire, LifeLine, North Park Fire, and Maggios Wrecker.

The accident remains under investigation.

Kolby Morningstar, 19, of Sycamore, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for battery. His bond

was set at $10,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Austin Bettner, 18, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for a speeding. Bettner posted $2,000 (10%) bond and released from the Ogle County Jail.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 9.

Matthew Gabbard, 30, of Dixon, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. Gabbard’s full cash bond was set at $557 pending a court appearance.

Steven M. Rozakis, 36, of Oregon, was arrested on a warrant for a petition to revoke. Rozakis’ bond was set at $25,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Oct. 22 Marcio Hernandez, 48 of Rockford, was arrested at 6:46 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois 72 and Kishwaukee Road. Hernandez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Debbie Tripp, 58, of Rockford, was

arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended. Tripp posted$3,000 (10%) as bond, was released from the Ogle County Jail, and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 9.

Michael Donaldson, 22, of Chicago, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for obstructing identification. Donaldson’ original bond was $3,000 (10%) but he was given a recognizance bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail.

He is scheduled to return for court on Nov. 16.

At approximately 1:10 a.m., deputies along with Mt Morris Fire and EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Cedar Road and Apple Road.

After an investigation it was learned that John C. Rocheleau, 60, of Dakota, failed to stop at the intersection and struck a ditch embankment. Rocheleau was issued a citation for improper lane usage and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Rocheleau was transported the FHN Hospital for non life threatening injuries.

At approximately 12:58 p.m., deputies responded to a hit and run accident in the 2000 block of North Illinois 251. The offending vehicle was located shortly thereafter in the Davis Junction area and stopped.

The driver, William Randles, 44, of Oswego, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, driving while under the influence and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Randles was also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, expired registration, illegal transportation of alcohol, and operating an uninsured vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle, Kenneth Steen, 66, of Rockford, complained of minor injuries and was released from the scene.

Corey Jones, 45, of Freeport, was

arrested on a warrant for violating the sex offender registration and failure to appear.

Jones’ bonds were set at $25,000 (10%) and $10,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

This would be quite the undertaking requiring 440 sheets of dough, canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice among other ingredients.

You may not be interested in breaking any records this year but are you getting hungry for pie yet?

You may be considering whether to use canned or fresh pumpkin puree for your masterpiece. Both will yield good results but the color, texture, and taste are all based on personal preference.

Here are some things to consider when deciding what kind of puree to use: • Making fresh puree can take up

to an hour so plan accordingly.

• The color of fresh puree will be lighter and brighter so consider what your friends and family are used to and if they’d be thrown off by a change in appearance.

• When selecting a pumpkin for cooking, the best selection is a “pie pumpkin” or “sweet pumpkin.”

These are smaller than the large jack-o-lantern pumpkins and the flesh is sweeter and less watery. In my opinion fresh is sweeter than canned.

• Figure one pound of raw, untrimmed pumpkin for each cup finished pumpkin puree.

One out of every seven adults in the U.S. is a former 4-H member.

Clubs are accepting new members this month to grow that number even higher.

4-H youth development programs provide hands-on learning activities for youth in Illinois and throughout the country. 4-H youth programs focus on leadership, citizenship and life skills.

Every county in Illinois has a 4-H program which is operated through University of Illinois Extension. 4-H club membership is open to youth aged 8 to 18. Youth 5 to 7 years of age may join the 4-H Cloverbud program.

There are several ways to participate in 4-H. Youth may join 4-H community clubs, coordinated by local certified adult volunteers.

Each club decides how often it meets, the location of its meetings and the activities held during the meeting. Members may select from over 100 different project areas to study while they build leadership, teamwork, cooperation, decision-making and communication skills.

Intuition may suggest all plants that provide habitats for wildlife and produce oxygen for the atmosphere are good no matter where they are planted.

However, non-native plant species that are introduced into areas across North America can pose significant threats to an ecosystem.

Foreign plants can wreak havoc on native plant species and agricultural industries. Scores of plants are aggressively invading certain areas of the country. Invasive species are introduced largely due to human action, such as planting non-native plants.

Plants also may be introduced through boating and fishing.

Wind and rain may introduce non-native plants to a particular region, while some plants are introduced through animals.

The organization PlayCleanGo. org says that not all non-native plants are harmful and some can be beneficial.

But non-native plants that take over and cause severe damage in areas outside of their normal range are considered to be invasive, and efforts must be made to keep invasives under control.

Gaining awareness of the pathways through which invasives spread can help people avoid introducing invasive species.

Some invasive plants are very attractive and they may be for sale at some garden centers, but such plants should be avoided for the benefit of local ecosystems.

In addition, weeds and seeds can be hidden in potting mixes or lawn and garden products and essentially sneak their way into regions where they do not belong.

Homeowners who learn to recognize invasive species can decrease their risk of introducing such plants to their properties.

Depending on the brand you select, you make be getting a mixture of pumpkin and squash. If you make your own, you know exactly what’s in it.

DIY Pumpkin Puree (oven method) 1. Cook pumpkin: Remove ends and cut pumpkin in half. Scrape away stringy mass and seeds. Cut each half into smaller segments so you have 6-8 chunks. Place onto a

baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes or until fork tender.

2. Puree pumpkin: When the pumpkin is cool enough to handle, remove the peel using a small sharp knife and your fingers. Put the peeled pumpkin in a food processor and blend until smooth. Add a tablespoon of water if needed. Pumpkin puree can be used right away or frozen for later use.

Use within 6 months for best quality.
