Fire destroys longtime Polo business 10 area departments battle fire at Dambman Lawn Mower Hospital BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Sparks from a grinder started a fire that destroyed a longtime Polo business Monday morning. Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said Dambman Lawn Mower Hospital, 605 S. Congress Ave., was completely engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly before 11 a.m. “Fire was rolling out the front, and big black smoke was high in the air,” he said. “They could see the smoke from Byron and Dixon. We were able to keep the fire from getting to the garage and house to the north and the house to the south.” Former owner Gene Dambman safely escaped from the burning building where he was working when the fire began around 10:48 a.m. The business is owned by Dambman’s son Jared. Karrow said the fire was accidental, and a representative from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office was on the

scene late Monday afternoon to help determine the cause. Firefighters from several area departments worked until around 4 p.m. to extinguish the fire. “Several hot spots popped up,” Karrow said. Two buildings, several lawn tractors, and other equipment and supplies were destroyed in the blaze. Dambmans have sold and serviced lawn mowers at the location since 1977. Polo firefighters were assisted by the Mt. Morris, Oregon, Byron, Stillman

Valley, Lanark, Milledgeville, Dixon City, Sterling, and Franklin Grove Fire Departments, as well as Advance and ATS ambulances. A second fire was reported in mid-afternoon while firefighters were still at the Dambman fire. Karrow said the resident of a house approximately two blocks south on Congress Avenue reported flames coming from a faulty outlet. He said firefighters made sure the fire was out and little damage was done.

Police and schools team up for emergency training Staff and students learn how to stay safe using ALICE The Forreston Police Department and Forreston Junior & Senior High School completed ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Drills Oct. 3 as a part of their emphasis on school safety. ALICE training is a national program that is used in schools, businesses, and hospitals to help keep everyone safe in the event of an emergency. Forreston Police Officer Chris Thiel, a certified ALICE trainer, led the drills. Thiel led a whole school review of ALICE reminders if there was an intruder at the school, and then helped FJSHS complete three different drills.

The first drill had staff and students practice barricading the classroom doors for a lockdown situation, which will be used if there was an immediate threat to a classroom. The second drill was a practice of an evacuation. The third and final drill was a practice of an intruder scenario. During the scenario staff and students had to decide what would be the best course of action to keep everyone safe. Throughout all three drills school administrators and police supervised the staff and students and worked with them as questions came up through each scenario. “FJSHS would like to thank Chief Mike Boomgarden, Officer Thiel, and the entire Forreston Police Department for their help and cooperation as they implement ALICE,” said Principal Travis Heinz.

Sesquicentennial Celebration

LR Lions to hold costume contest The Leaf River Lions Club will sponsor a Halloween costume contest on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Building. Weather permitting, the contest may be held outside in the Bertolet Park. Costumes will be judged in the following classes: 0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5 years and kindergarten, grades 1-5, middle school, high school and adult. First place in each division will receive $5, second place $3, and every entry will get $1. Everyone in costume will receive a free hot dog lunch, including chips and lemonade. Hot dogs will be available for purchase at 3:30 p.m. The Lions Club will also sponsor a Trunk ’n’ Treat event on Halloween beginning at 5:15 p.m. Cars will park along Blaine Street on the west side of the Bertolet Park, on both sides of the street, with their trunks open. Morris, announced 15 vacancies on eight boards appointed by the county board. He said finding enough qualified people willing to serve on the boards is an ongoing problem. Current vacancies include: • four seats on the Board of Health, one must be a dentist; • one unexpired term on the Regional Planning Commission;

• one regular seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals; • one alternate seat on the Zoning Board of Appeals; • two seats on the Housing Authority Board; • three seats on the Civic Center Authority Board; • one seat on the Franklin Grove Fire Protection District Board; • two seats on the Mental Health 708 Board. Construction will begin this week on infrastructure for Ogle County’s new jail. County engineer Jeremy Ciesiel told the Ogle County Board Tuesday evening that work would begin Thursday or Friday on South Sixth Street in Oregon to relocate water and sanitary sewer mains. He said Martin & Company has already brought equipment and materials for the project to the site. The new water main will run along Jefferson Street and the sewer line will flow to the south, away from the new building which will be located in the 100 block of South Sixth Street across from the judicial center. Ciesiel said the work is expected to take approximately two weeks. The county board approved the design plan Sept. 25 for the $25.5 million jail which will be called the

Ogle County Judicial Center Annex. The new building will face Washington Street (Ill. 64). One block of South Sixth Street will be closed to allow a large sally port and enclosed passageway to connect the jail and the judicial center for the secure transfer of inmates into the jail, as well as from the jail to courtrooms. Construction on the jail is expected to begin April 1 and be completed in 20 months. Ciesiel said Tuesday that upgrades of several surrounding streets will be done next year at the same time as the jail construction. The street work will include repaving and new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks for one block of South Fifth Street, two blocks of Jefferson, and one block of South Sixth Street. In another matter, the board approved two changes to the vehicle impound ordinance. Tow fees were hiked from $350 to $500, and the time a towed vehicle is

Black Hawk team recognizes fund contributors BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Seven area banks and two individuals were recognized Oct. 4 for making the donations that finally set the repairs to the Black Hawk Statue in motion. At a ceremony on the Ogle County Courthouse lawn, members of the Black Hawk Restoration Committee honored representatives from Stillman Bank, The Harvard State Bank, Byron Bank, Sterling Federal Bank, Union Savings Bank, and Holcomb State Bank for their total contributions of $14,000. Also honored were Kim Smeja, of Oregon, for contributing $20,000 and Richard Little, also of Oregon, for his donation of $2,000. The donations put fundraising for the statue over top of the $225,000 needed for officials from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Conservation Foun-

dation to sign contracts with Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, the firm that will do the repair work. The engineering firm Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger, which has an office in Chicago, will supervise the restoration under a separate contract with the two agencies. The $225,000 was needed to activate a matching grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Restoration team member Roger Cain said he recently spoke with officials from QRI during a conference call with the IDNR and ICF. “They’re excited to be involved in a piece of art,” he said. Eric Schenck, ICF executive director, said QRI, based in Chicago, is nationally known. “I want to express our faith and confidence in this contractor,” he said. The IDNR and ICF are committed to seeing the repairs through to com-

pletion, he said. The work will start next June, Cain said, and be completed in 60 to 90 days. Like the past four winters, the concrete statue, will be encased in protective wrap before winter weather sets in. “They are going to wrap it this winter,” Cain said. “They don’t want to risk [more damage from] a severe freeze-thaw cycle.” The IDNR has agreed to pay for the wrapping and unwrapping next spring, he said. Work on finding the correct mix and color for the concrete to make the repairs will be completed this fall. The statue, created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park near Oregon. Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in

1911. Schenck urged the community to maintain its commitment to the statue. “Forever is a long time,” he said. “This effort to maintain the statue will be an ongoing process that will need your long-term commitment and support.” The restoration committee will now focus on establishing a trust fund to secure the statue’s future. “The Black Hawk Statue is clearly the most recognizable landmark associated with Oregon, and to not have it repaired is simply not an option.” said Jan Stilson, Restoration Committee Chairman. OCHS Class of 1958 holds reunion Plans for the Oregon Community High School Class of 1958 to share their 60th class reunion with the Autumn on Parade weekend looked like a sure winner. Starting on Friday night (Oct. 5) several members of the ’58 team joined classmate and musical host Ron Colson at the Mt. Morris Moose for First Fridays Open Stage and a celebration of the funding victory for Black Hawk Statue. A major problem was brewing for Saturday, Oct. 6 when Leonard

Bruns of the classes’ catering provider, Powerhouse Bar-B-Q, was knocked out of commission with a serious (is there any other kind?) stroke. When the class gathered at Oregon’s Cork & Tap at noon on Saturday a barbecue feast awaited them Joyce Bruns and son James, who flew in from Oklahoma, kept up their schedule of visits to the hospital and still prepared the anticipated feast for the class reunion. The reunion was a roaring success and the Class of ’58 expresses

their appreciation to the Powerhouse Bar-B-Q Team for service above and beyond the call of duty. Best of all Leonard is making a speedy recovery and should be home by the time this story “hits the street.” In observing that after 60 years, the five-year interval between reunions might be a bit much, it was decided to pick a month each year to join the Depot’s last-Saturday-morning-of-the-month historic presentation followed by a class reunion.

The Mt. Morris Moose Family Center will once again host the Songwriters Open Mic on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The event is held the third Friday of each month and others are scheduled for Nov. 16, and a Christmas Finale on Dec. 21 will round out the 2018 schedule. BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Law enforcement officials are still working to solve the arson and double homicide two years ago that took the lives of a young Byron mother and her 3-year-old son.

Margaret “Maggie” Meyer, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive on Oct. 19, 2016, and her son Amos was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital. “It’s an active investigation,” Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said Oct. 11. “We continue to work on it.” State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said the sheriff ’s department, Byron Police Department, and Illinois State Police are working closely with his office to solve the case. “We’re confident we’re going to come to a resolution for the family and friends,” he said. VanVickle, Morrow, and Ogle County Detective Lt. Brian Ketter declined to discuss details of the

Maggie and Amos Meyer case because their investigation is ongoing. The fire was reported around 6:40 a.m. by Meyer’s ex-husband, Duane C. Meyer, now 36, of Stillman Valley, who told officials he was there to pick up his son. The couple had been divorced about a month earlier. When firefighters arrived, smoke alarms were sounding, the house was filled with heavy smoke, and Duane Meyer and a Byron police officer were on the lawn performing CPR on Amos, who had been in

an upstairs bedroom. Amos and his father were taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where the little boy was pronounced dead. An autopsy at the Winnebago County Coroner’s office showed he died of smoke inhalation. VanVickle, Ketter, and Morrow declined to reveal the cause of Maggie’s death, although they said pathologists have determined that. They also would not say how the fire started. Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was an arson while he was at the scene. Maggie, the daughter of Donald and Luann Rosko, of Mt. Morris, had been a teacher at the Chana Educational Center for several years, and Amos had recently become a student at the preschool at the Byron Forest Preserve. In what could be the final 11-on-11 varsity high school football game played at Polo High School, the Marcos enjoyed a victory that was reminiscent of the program’s recent successes. Polo scored six first-half touchdowns, setting up a running clock throughout the second half of a 42-18 victory over Ashton-Franklin Center on the Marcos’ Senior Night, making them playoff eligible in their final year before they switch to 8-man in 2019. “Everything we worked for got us to Senior Night,” said senior quarterback Braiden Soltow, who rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns. “It flew by. We got the ‘W’ tonight, and that’s all that matters.” The victory was quite welcome for Polo, which had suffered backto-back shutout losses to River Ridge and Stockton heading into the contest, and is now on the playoff bubble. “We hadn’t scored in 2 weeks,” coach Jeff Bumsted said. “We were 4-1 and doing well, and then the bottom fell out. Polo, which advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2016, probably have enough playoff points for a berth this year, but it’s not a sure thing. “It’ll be up in the air,” Bumstead said. “If we [would have won] the River Ridge game, this is Win 6.” Friday’s win was highlighted by junior running back Tucker Mumford’s 115 yards and three touchdowns, but on Senior Night, it was fittingly a senior who stole the show. Linebacker Dravon Wells intercepted a pass from AFC’s Caleb McBride and returned it 35 yards for a score early in the second quarter to give his team a 28-0 lead. “We had a blitz call; I had dropped back in my zone. I saw the ball coming for me and I decided to go for it,” Wells said. “It felt like going back to older years in middle school when I used to run the ball.” Like Polo, AFC has been the victim of a decrease in numbers on its team this year, and injuries have added to the Raiders’ problems with depth. They were able, however, to find success in the second half, scoring three times, including on a 38-yard punt return by sophomore Peyton Lanning. Marcus Cater added a 25-yard score on the game’s final play for the Raiders (0-8), finishing with a team-high 27 rushing yards.

Why is there a lack of high school officials? If it’s not the money, is it the verbal abuse? Lately, much as been of the shortage of game officials for high-school sports. While in Forreston recently, I asked long-time official Don Cook his take on it. “It’s been coming for a few years and it’s really getting bad,” Cook said. “There are first-year officials working varsity games. When I started, you worked five years before you did varsity. And, it’s almost impossible to get subs.” Still doing games at more than 70 years of age, Cook has assigned officials for various leagues. “In football, I think we’ll have to go to some Saturday games,” he said. “I tell athletic directors to have homecoming on Saturday to split things up.” This past year, Cook and company has put on clinics in Sterling, Forreston and Rockford with the hopes of attracting new officials.

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert That effort resulted in only two new candidates. With an average age of 55-60 years for a referee, something has to give. In nearly every sport other than track and cross country, finding officials has become difficult. “I can’t say it is about (lack of) pay,” Cook said. “The Big Northern pays $110 for two games.” Why have we reached this point and what does it mean for interscholastic sports? The number one factor is abuse officials have taken, as society has become less and less respectful of authority figures. In a disgusting manner, parents and coaches are acting like little brats not getting their way. They take out their frustration on the poor officials, which perpetuates the

problem. Some of these newer guys refuse to take it and quit. Can you blame them? “Basketball and softball are tough,” said Cook speaking from experience. “It used to be just dads that complained. Now, mothers and everybody have played it and think they know more than the officials.” Another major factor is a general shortage of workers. All over the country, jobs go begging for lack of interested workers. So, why should officiating be any different? Along those same lines, employers have told me that the new work force is much ‘softer’ than previous generations. That ‘softness’ doesn’t translate very well for someone under the microscope as a sports official. High school sports don’t mean as much to this generation as it did to previous ones. Some don’t even know who’s in their conference or care how other teams in the area or state are doing. Decades ago, kids had a much keener interest in high school sports

and that certainly was a consideration in wanting to maintain contact by becoming officials. Here’s something else to consider: When guys like Don Cook started 50 years ago, it was primarily boys football, baseball, basketball, cross country, track and wrestling. Since then, other sports like soccer have emerged. Then, if you add in girls sports, the workload is about double of what it used to. What is the answer? Nobody seems to know. We have seen the effect already with games being rescheduled, short-handed crews and a weaker product. Maybe the only hope is to offer support, rather than criticizing. But, for that to happen, there must be a change of heart inside of a person. The IHSA has had the Add A Tude sports mascot for over 20 years and that promotion has done little for sportsmanship. Yes, it must start with our own spiritual condition, not with a mascot or being reminded to behave.

OBITUARY ELEANORE L. FINFROCK Eleanore Lucille Finfrock, 94, of Mt. Morris died on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home with her family by her side. Eleanore was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of J. Henry Edward and Estella (Rutt) Frerichs. She graduated from Davenport High School in the Class of 1943. Eleanore married John W. Finfrock on October 12, 1942 in LaGrange, Missouri, He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 2002.

Eleanore worked as a data processor for Kable News Company for 25 years, retiring in 1986. She was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Davis Junction man charged with sexual assault A Davis Junction man has been charged with predatory criminal sexual assault following an investigation by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department. Robert A. Hardt, 39, of Davis Junction, was arrested on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. for the Class X felony following an investigation by Ogle County detectives that began in September.

Hardt is alleged to have sexual contact with a minor who was 13 or younger in June and September, court documents indicate. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and appeared before Ogle County Associate Circuit Judge John Redington on Oct. 10 via closed circuit television. He was represented by Ogle County

Public Defender Dennis Riley. Redington found that probable cause existed and set Hardt’s bond at $250,000 (10%) adding the condition that he have no contact with the victim and anyone else under the age of 18. Hardt’s preliminary hearing has been set for Oct. 31.

a utility pole. Deputies learned that Berg had been traveling northbound on Illinois 2 when she lost control and entered the east ditch where her vehicle struck the utility pole and came to rest. Berg refused medical treatment from the Byron Ambulance at the scene. As a result of the damage to the pole, power lines fell into the roadway which caused the northbound lane of Illinois 2 between Luther Drive in Byron and Ashelford Drive north of Byron to be closed to traffic until 8:15 p.m. when Com Ed was able to replace the pole and lines. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Byron Police Department, the Byron Fire Department, the Byron Ambulance, and IDOT, who assisted with traffic control. Oct. 12 At 4:58 a.m., deputies responded to the Area of Stone Hill Road and Brick Road, northeast of Oregon for an abandoned vehicle in the roadway. Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for September. Troopers issued 388 citations, 446 written warnings, and made 29 criminal arrests during the month. Speeding accounted for 199 citations, 20 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 16 citations were issued for distracted driving violations. Troopers investigated 17 traffic crashes, assisted 70 motorists, and conducted 152 commercial vehicle inspections, 16 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. Nine arrests were made for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had one traffic crash fatality in September. The following activities were also reported.

Plane lands in cornfield Oct. 11 Law enforcement officials received a report at 1:30 p.m. that an airplane landed in a cornfield in the southwest corner of Creston and Mulford Roads. The airplane was a 1950 North American T-28A. The pilot and passenger took off from Tulsa, Oklahoma and were en route to Wonder Lake when they reportedly lost power and made an emergency landing in the cornfield. No one was injured, and the plane was not damaged.
