Johnson Oil celebrates 60th anniversary

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com It’s 3 a.m. Overnight crude oil trading doesn’t sleep, and Art Johnson is wide awake, checking to see what’s happening.

The 94-year-old owner of Johnson Oil Company operates like clockwork in the wee hours of the morning: he checks market trends, tank volumes, and makes the important decision of how much the price of fuel is going to be at his stores for the day.

It’s a constant and long-running routine that’s helped him remain successful: Johnson Oil is celebrating 60 years selling Shell gasoline and more in the area.

“It’s just like I started yesterday,” Johnson said. “I’ve been very fortunate and have had a blessed run with the business.”

Established in 1959, Johnson Oil started out as a provider of heating oil before it opened its first service station in 1965 in Amboy. Stations in Dixon, Franklin Grove, and Polo were added two years later, and it ventured into Iowa with a store in Clinton in 1972.

Much expansion and many remodels later, Johnson Oil now has 80 stores from as far west as Buffalo, Iowa, to its newest acquisitions in Morris two years ago.

The stores also include the Shell ExpressLanes in Oregon, Mt. Morris, Grand Detour, and Rochelle.

Johnson has seen the transition from full to self service at the pump, manual to automatic inventory management, and the establishment of a rewards program from Shell.

Long a Shell dealer, Johnson added BP to the company portfolio with the purchase of a chain of stores in La Salle and Kendall counties in 2011.

He didn’t do it alone. His wife, Darlene, worked at his side for many years until she died in 2011, and his daughter, Kathy Peugh, handles plenty of day-today operations from its longtime home behind a Shell station at U.S. 30 and 12th Avenue in Rock Falls.

Grandchildren eventually came into the business, and great-grandchildren may be in line as well.

“They have all that high-tech stuff that keep us going on the right path,” Johnson said. “They fix pumps 100 miles away on their laptops. Sixty years ago, I had a pair of pliers and baling wire to fix a mechanical pump. What a change.”

Johnson grew up in rural Tampico, graduated from Tampico High School in 1944. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on a catapult crew on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He married Darlene on April 18, 1949,

Art Johnson and they were together for 52 years.

They made it a point each Sunday to make the rounds to each of the company’s stations to collect paperwork.

“She was always very much part of the business,” he said. “She kept the taxes paid on time, which was about 10 or 12 of them each month to either Springfield or Washington. She was a great wife, mother, and business associate.”

Johnson actually has been in the fuel business for 70 years.

After his Navy days, he worked at International Harvester in Rock Falls for two years before a fuel delivery job opened up at the local Sinclair dealer.

For 10 years, he delivered fuel to at least nine stations in Sterling and Rock Falls alone, including stations across

the intersection from his Route 30 store, where Family Table sits today, and another at the foot of First Avenue bridge in Rock Falls.

“Heating oil was a big thing then,” he said. “That’s all we had; 95 percent of all of the homes in Sterling and Rock Falls were heated with oil.”

Winter months were busy for Johnson, but there wasn’t much to do in the summer.

That’s when he purchased a former Shell station in Amboy and made it his own. That station has gone through remodels and still sits at the corner of North Mason Avenue and East Wasson Road.

Service stations eventually turned into convenience stores with tobacco, food and other sundries; the Route 30 station was the first to make the transition in 1979, and ExpressLane Inc. was formed to separate the company’s store operations from fuel.

Simon Olalde, manager at the North End store on North Locust Street in Sterling, has worked for Johnson for nearly 40 years, back when full service still was common and the store had auto bays.

It also has gone through several remodels and opens at 3 a.m. during the week. Johnson, who lives nearby, is there either before or just a few minutes after it opens.

“I’ve never heard anything bad about him,” Olalde said. “He’s a pretty fair guy as long as you tell the truth and don’t lie to him.”

Saying good-bye is seldom easy, I’ve been told, and I’m finding that to be true.

As of Friday, Sept. 27 I will make the transition from almost 40 years at a job I love to that much-anticipated pie-in-the-sky life of leisure called retirement.

I have been covering and reporting on the “life and times” of Ogle County and its residents since January of 1980.

Since May of 1987, I have worked for Ogle County Newspapers, editing, reporting, taking photos, laying out papers, and even delivering a few.

Although I left for another job in 1994 and 1995, I couldn’t stay away.

Newspapers, as it turns out, were my calling.

I am truly grateful to everyone I have got to know and those that I have worked with.

Through it all I have learned a

great many things — one of the most important is that Ogle County is a good place with good people.

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to serve you.

And let’s hope retirement does not prove to be leisurely after all.

Local families get help from Brush With Kindness

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Families in three Ogle County communities got help recently with projects that spruced up the outside of their homes, thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County.

HFHOC Executive Director Vanessa White-Broome said this summer the organization kept busy with its Brush With Kindness program, rather than a new house build.

“Our goal is to reach people we can help,” she said. “We urge people to call us if they could use some help or know someone who does.”

A couple is Rochelle got a wheelchair ramp needed for enhanced access into their home.

HFHOC volunteers poured a new concrete backyard patio for a couple in Mt. Morris and also hung a new service door into their garage, replaced the backyard gate, installed a grab rail near the gate, plus a few more projects.

Yard and deck clean-up and maintenance is underway for a Forreston family, and a new storm door will be installed as soon as it arrives.

Turnout was great for Johnson’s 60th anniversary

The Polo Firefighters Association will host its annual hog roast and open house on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Polo Fire Station.

A quarter beef and a freezer will be raffled at the event.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the ambulance station in Polo, or from any Polo firefighter for $5 each.

Pink Heals of the Sauk Valley will also attend the event.

Polo firefighters will do a burn simulation.

Donations will be accepted at the door.

Warmolts sketched plan for hospital on envelope Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Seven years after I was born Dr. Lambertus Warmolts opened his third hospital in 1942.

Yes, this was done by a 1911 Oregon High School graduate who majored in the Scientific Course and participated in chorus and track.

His father and mother were born in Holland. In 1903 the family moved to Oregon. His father was a carpenter.

While Dr. Warmolts was practicing medicine in his second hospital located on the second floor above Decker’s Drug Store he selected several possible sites for his third Oregon Hospital.

He asked Father Kreckel of the Catholic Church for his opinion as to which site would be the best.

Two hours later Dr. Warmolts was offered the lots north of the church

by Father Kreckel.

Dr. Warmolts sketched the floor plan on an old envelope. He then transferred his floor plan to his lots using pegs and string.

This 72 by 109 feet one story building contained three sections divided by two corridors.

I remember the reception room with four corners of glass brick with a small pool in the center of the room and a large skylight in the ceiling.

This center section of the hospital housed two doctors’ offices.

The east sections had seven private rooms and two four-bed wards which housed 20 patients.

The previous hospital above Decker’s Drug Store served 13 patients.

The hospital opened its doors to the public on May 16, 1943. This hospital closed its doors after serving the public for 27 years in 1969.

Government regulations made it difficult for small hospitals to remain open.

Dr. Warmolts continued his medical practice in the closed hospital building and rented space to the Ogle County Special Education Department.

Dr. Warmolts ran his practice single-handedly until Fern Henderson Burright, R.N., a 20-year-old nurse from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, entered his office to apply for a job as a surgical nurse.

She assisted with deliveries, anesthetized patients, supervised obstet-

In the Bicentennial oral history done by members of the Oregon High School history class, Fern recalled giving approximately 1,200 anesthetics. Between 1959 and 1969, she attended 572 births.

In 1971 a group was formed to provide better medical coverage for this area.

Dr. Mesrobian, who was associated with the Medical Arts Clinic in Dixon, established a medical clinic at the Warmolts Hospital.

This clinic included an X-ray facility, a laboratory, a surgery room for minor surgical work, and several examining rooms.

Staff for the clinic was Joyce Tremble, of Oregon, registered nurse, Debbie Cloutier, of Dixon, X-Ray and lab technician, and Susan Schneider, of Oregon, secretary receptionist.

For me this old hospital building brings back a lot of memories.

Some of these are Dr. Warmolts, Fern Burright, my wife working there, my father in one of the wards, and seeing my son David being delivered in the delivery room.

Fern called me into the delivery during his delivery before the doctor arrived. This was definitely not a standard delivery.

In 1984 Fern Burright and Dr. Warmolts served as parade marshals at the Autumn On Parade Festival.

Church to host lunch and bazaar on Oct. 9

Abbey Brooks attends FFA conference

Members of the Freeport Church of the Brethren are serving their 39th annual Chicken Noodle Soup Lunch on Thursday, Oct. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The $7 lunch menu includes homemade chicken noodle soup, gelatin salad, roll, cake, and a beverage. Bazaar items for sale include fall produce, plants, jam, crafts, home-

made noodles, and baked cookies, pies, cakes, and breads.

Forreston FFA member Abbey Brooks attended the FFA ELITE conference on Sept. 19, which just so happens to be National Teach Ag Day. The conference is for individuals interested in pursuing a career in agriculture education. Brooks went to different workshops and attended a college fair. “It really opened my eyes to the amount of jobs that are available within just ag educa-

Dickson is AOP Guest of Honor

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com This year’s Autumn on Parade Guest of Honor is certainly no stranger to the festival and all its activities.

Longtime AOP President and volunteer Debbie Dickson will be honored during the Harvest Time Parade, an event she announced and narrated for many years, on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Dickson, 61, served on the Autumn on Parade Committee for 20 years, the last 10 of those as its president.

Kish Foundation offers scholarships for spring semester The Kishwaukee College Foundation’s scholarship application for the spring of 2020 is now open. Applications must be received by Friday, Oct. 18.

“The park district is offering two classes where participants can get out for an evening, sip on their favorite beverage from Cork & Tap and enjoy a hands-on craft class/ workshop instructed by the talented staff at Merlin’s Greenhouse,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation.

The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of Ogle County, be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area related to the disabled, or a full-time undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled.

The Oregon United Methodist Women will again hold their annual White Elephant Sale during Autumn on Parade weekend.

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com Area county boards are taking steps to prepare for a new state law Jan. 1 that requires pet owners to have their cats vaccinated for rabies.

All cat owners will be required to have cats 4 months and older vaccinated and tagged, according to the law.

A subsequent vaccination needs to be performed for a companion pet within a year of receiving its first shot.

Changes made to the Animal Control Act, which was signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Aug. 9, mandates that all counties establish vaccination and registration fees for cats.

“The community should embrace this because it’s addressing the health of the community and the health of the animals,” said Happy Tails President Mark Razo. “In the long run, it’s going to help the animals in the area.”

Happy Tails is an animal shelter in Rock Falls.

No treatment exists for unvacci-

nated animals once they’ve been exposed to rabies, Razo said.

By state law, should an unvaccinated cat or dog be exposed to an animal with rabies, or to a poten-

tially rabid animal that cannot be tested, the pet must be quarantined for six months, at the owner’s considerable expense.

If the owner cannot afford to quar-

antine their animals, the only other option is to euthanize the pet.

“Animals up to date will be examined and get another shot,” Razo said. “They get to go home and don’t have to be put down.”

The Ogle County Board passed an ordinance Sept. 17 establishing the fees to go into effect Jan. 1.

Fees for spayed or neutered cats will be $12 for 1 year or $30 for 3 years. Discounts for microchipped cats are $5 and $15 respectively.

Unaltered cat fees are $24 for one year or $70 for three years; the discounts still apply.

The Whiteside County Board established its own cat fees in 2018.

When the ordinance takes effect Jan. 1, a one-year registration will cost $8 and a three-year registration will cost $20.

The Lee County Board has acknowledged the changes in state law and touched on the need to hire an additional employee at Animal Control to help with the impending cat registration fees, but has yet to set them.

OGLE COUNTY BOARD

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Board approved a measure last week to collect sales tax on recreational cannabis.

The board voted 17-5 Sept. 17 to impose a 3.75 percent tax on recreational cannabis sold in unincorporated areas of the county and a three percent tax on sales made in municipalities.

State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said the board could pass the tax and still choose not to allow cannabis-related businesses in unincorporated areas of the county.

Approval of the measure makes it possible for the county to collect taxes from the businesses in the municipalities that do allow them.

Local city councils and village board have discussed the pros and cons in recent weeks.

The Oregon City Council voted

Sept. 10 to have city attorney Paul Chadwick draw up the ordinances for retail dispensaries, craft growers, infusers, and transporters.

They rejected having on-site consumption facilities and cultivators.

A state law takes passed by the Illinois General Assembly this summer will allow Illinoisans who are 21 or older to legally possess 30 grams (about one ounce) of cannabis for recreational use.

Medical marijuana dispensaries will be the only legal sellers of marijuana for recreational use at first, but by mid-2020, the state is expected grant additional licenses.

The businesses will be highly regulated.

Counties and cities are voting on local marijuana taxes this month to allow enough time for the Illinois Department of Revenue to process the requests by the start of the year.

Cardinals blow by Ashton-Franklin Center 48-8 The Cardinals scored 16 points in the first quarter and added 32 more in the second en route to a 48-8 win over Ashton-Franklin Center on Sept. 20.

Ethan Mulder and Jordan Neuschwander each had 99 rushing yards for Forreston.

Neuschwander started the scoring for Forreston with a 10 yard run followed by Mulder with a 44-yard run.

Dom Christensen scored on a 36-yard run and then Bailey Cullor hit Christensen on a 34-yard pass for another touchdown.

lack of athleticism with some gutty performances to make the playoffs as a 5-win team several times. The trademark of Hawk football was discipline and physicality.

Who can forget that playoff win on the road at Wilmington in 2013 or taking Aurora Christian with its D-I talent to the limit in 2011.

Football is a beautiful game and one reason for that, is unlike basketball, a player doesn’t necessarily have to be physically gifted. You don’t even have to be a big guy or even fast.

More important is the desire to hit hard, be mentally tough and fundamentally disciplined.

Those guys from 2011 were a good example of that – a physical bunch of tough hombres.

I remember Cody Merrill telling me some of the players took offense when I wrote the team didn’t have much talent. I explained to him that my comments were meant as a huge compliment.

Over the years, opposing coaches would often tell me the same thing about how hard Oregon played with the limited resources they had.

The won/loss record does not measure the true value of a football team. Rather, it’s how much heart it plays with.

Has that intangible been lost the last few years at Oregon?

decreased. That was evident watching blocking and tackling against Byron.

Could that be attributed to football practices becoming less intense with fewer contact drills due to IHSA guidelines and more penalties in place for roughhousing?

It might be a factor, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for a team not exerting its physical presence on the gridiron. It is still possible to go all out and play within the

parameters of the rules.

I’m sorry if this sounds critical, but a component of this column is making realistic assessments.

Actually, I applaud any kid from Oregon that goes out for football and is making an effort against long odds.

Overall, football is the toughest of all high school sports to participate in and these kids are doing what they can to represent their school.

finally had a chance to see the Oregon football team play this past Friday. Going against powerhouse Byron, the results were as expected.

Not only did Byron out-talent Oregon, but they had 35 juniors/ seniors compared to 21 for the Hawks. That makes a difference.

Foremost are having superior depth and a better pool of athletes to pick from.

It also makes a difference at practice. In a loss to Dixon the week before, coach Nick Schneiderman spoke of not being accustomed to that type of speed because of not seeing it in practice.

By the time Oregon got adjusted in the second half, they made a game of it against the Dukes. To adequately prep for a game, it starts with competitive practices.

Another byproduct of low numbers is limited competition for starting positions. That diminishes intensity at practice.

With an 0-4 record and undefeated Stillman Valley coming to town, it’s got to be tough for the 2019 Hawks.

I can’t speak to player morale, but from 20 years of covering the program, I can tell you the coaches do everything possible to have a team ready to play.

Here the reality of the situation: Since Nick Snyder and Ryan McWethy, Oregon has not had allstate caliber players. Matt Crandall was a force in the line, but hampered by injuries.

And, it is not like Oregon has kids walking the halls that could be allstars, as coaches at bigger schools often lament. The talent isn’t there.

Curbing opioid epidemic starts with border crisis O pioid abuse and addiction are inflicting a grave and growing toll on communities across the nation, leaving users and their loved ones looking for answers on how to curb the destruction.

There are numerous reasons the opioid epidemic has spread so far and wide, but there is no doubt the epidemic is made much worse by foreign drug cartels and smugglers that traffic deadly synthetic opioids to every corner of the United States.

Law enforcement in Ogle County is fighting on the front lines to curb

the opioid epidemic, but to truly fix the problem at the local level, federal lawmakers must come together to solve the crisis at the border.

In October 2017, President Trump declared opioid abuse a “national health emergency” and predicted that the epidemic would only get worse unless action was taken.

Unfortunately, since the President’s declaration, federal lawmakers have failed to come together to take serious measures to prevent synthetic opioids from fueling the opioid epidemic.

The numbers tell the story – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that synthetic opioids are the cause of the sharpest increase in drug overdose deaths.

From 2013 to 2016, deaths from fentanyl increased 520 percent. At the same time, deaths from prescription opioids have fallen.

In fact, synthetic opioids now account for 75 percent of the opioid-related deaths in the country.

Fentanyl is fueling the opioid epidemic because it is so deadly. The drug is 100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times more powerful than heroin.

It can shut down breathing in less than a minute. A miniscule amount – the equivalent of four grains of salt – can be deadly.

There are reports from around the country of innocent victims, first responders, and law enforcement

Saul Valdez, 25, of Davis Junction, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at 12:30 p.m. in the 14,000 block of East Illinois 72.

Deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident with injuries at 7:36 a.m. in the 11,000 block of West White Eagle Road.

A pick-up truck driven by Loran Wilken, 78, of Leaf River, was eastbound when it went out of control on the gravel road.

The truck traveled off of the north side of the roadway and overturned several times in the cornfield before coming to rest.

The accident had occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Wilken suffered serious injuries and was transported to FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.

U.S. officials are unequivocal that China is the main source for fentanyl and other illicit drugs entering the country, and Mexican drug cartels are the primary conduit for smuggling and distributing it across every state.

These synthetic drugs are cheap to make, can be sold over the internet, sent by mail, or smuggled into the country at legal and illegal points of entry.

Border patrol seizures of fentanyl have risen drastically in recent years, but more needs to be done.

In January of this year, Customs and Border Protection officers made the largest fentanyl seizure in the agency’s history when they confiscated 254 pounds of the drug valued at $3.5 million.

But the problem extends far beyond the border states.

In April 2018, state troopers in Nebraska seized 118 pounds of fentanyl from a tractor-trailer during a routine traffic stop.

This staggering amount contained enough lethal doses to kill more than 26 million people.

The solution to the opioid epidemic can be achieved, but lawmakers must come together to take action.

Herbert F. Davis, 98, Oregon, died on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019 at Pinecrest Community, Mt. Morris.

Herbert was born in Savanna on April 11, 1921 to Frank and Agnes (Messmer) Davis.

He married Marian Keim on July 18, 1942 in Savanna. She preceded him in death on July 16, 2019.

They moved to Oregon in 1959 and together they joined Oregon United Methodist Church.

NORMAN L. LUDWIG Norman Lowell Ludwig, 86, of Forreston, died on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019 at Parkview Home, Freeport.

He was born on July 17, 1933 in Forreston, the son of Albert and Martha (Rose) Ludwig.

Norman married Mary Ellen Knodle.

He proudly served for his county in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran.

Professor Emeritus Betty L. Schroeder, Department of Management, Northern Illinois University, died on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019, at her home in Sycamore.

Schroeder taught at NIU for 27 years before retiring in 2003 and mentored more than 61 graduate students in master’s and doctorate programs in business education.

Schroeder earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business education from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and her doctorate in Business and Distributive Education from Michigan State University.

She was a multiple recipient of Excellence in Teaching awards.

In addition, she earned a Distinguished Service Award from Professional Secretaries International and a chapter award from Delta Pi Epsilon (DPE - honorary graduate business education research society).

Schroeder published articles, reviews, and books. She co-authored 19 texts within Certified Professional Secretary Examination Review Series and was Series Editor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arland; and sister, Dolores.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 23 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston.

Burial was at Haldane Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
