Tall grass prairie flourishes on former cropland

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Sixteen years ago, Ken Kielsmeier, of rural Oregon, had a somewhat wistful idea that has bloomed into a haven for native plant and wildlife species.

Always a nature enthusiast, Kielsmeier, 60, became increasing concerned about the ever-diminishing numbers of insects, birds, and other animals native to Ogle County caused by the loss of habitat.

He convinced his childhood friend Mark Long to convert some of his farmland south of Leaf River back to native forbs and grasses, in other words, what was growing there 200 years ago before European settlers came to the area.

“I talked Mark into enrolling eight acres in the Conservation Reserve Program,” Kielsmeier said, and the two set out to plant a prairie.

The result of their work is an ever-changing color palette, depending on the time of year, of the purple, yellow, and pink blooms of coneflowers, milkweed, joe pye weed, New England aster, and goldenrod, setting off the gently rolling “sea” of tall grasses.

The project began in May of 2003.

“We disked up the ground, and we got a mix with big and little bluestem, switch grass, Indian grass, and side oats grama,” Kielsmeier said. “ We sowed it with a broadcast spreader mounted on the tractor.”

They also had a wildflower mixture that Kielsmeier added to damp sawdust.

“I sat on the back of the tractor and flung it out by the handfuls,” he remem-

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com “Wow! What an honor!” was an Oregon man’s reaction last week to having his former work place renamed for him.

“My life has been enriched in a special way being around the disabled,” Bob Glaser told the large crowd that gathered Aug. 28 at an open house to honor him and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Village of Progress.

Current VOP Executive Director Brion Brooks announced that the main building, off Pines Road in Oregon, will be renamed.

Glaser was the first executive director of VOP when it was founded in 1969 to serve Ogle County adults with developmental difficulties, and he remained in that post for 38 years until he retired in 2007.

Craig Carpenter, who was hired

by Glaser in 1973 and served as executive director from 2007 to 2014, also credited his former boss with giving VOP its solid foundation. “…Without Bob Glaser I do not think any of us would be here today at this celebration,” Carpenter said. “His impact, his vision, his drive, is directly responsible for the birth, the growth, and the success of this agency. You cannot overstate his importance to the Village of Progress.”

Longtime employees Jerry Virgil and Donna Mattison, both hired in the first year of VOP’s existence, presented the award to Glaser.

Glaser, in turn, praised Virgil and Mattison, as well as other staff members for their commitment and devotion to the disabled at VOP. “They have an undeniable, unbelievable love for the men and women they are serving,” he said.

He recalled that VOP got its start in a storefront in Mt. Morris that had only one restroom.

The consumers, the men and women served, saw many first over the years, he said, such as their first jobs, first pay checks, and first camp experiences.

The atmosphere was always positive, Glaser said, with laughter often filling the facility.

“This is a fun place with fun people,” he said.

A group of parents and concerned citizens formed the Blackhawk Association for the Mentally Retarded in 1957 to advocate for county residents with developmental disabilities.

The group created VOP 12 years later as a place for children and adults with developmental disabilities to find a sense of purpose, trust, and community.

VOP offers vocational skills, recreational programs, and social activities, to each of the men and women who attend.

Morings will not discontinue program

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com An local waste hauler said last week that his company hopes to get rate increases to cover the rising costs of recycling, not discontinue the program.

Steve Moring, of Moring Disposal Inc. Forreston, said Aug. 30 that

his firm doesn’t plan to discontinue its recycling program in local communities but is hopeful villages and cities with contracts will agree to rate hikes to help cover the cost.

“Recycling is something people should continue to do,” he said.

Moring told the Polo City Council Aug. 5 that recyclables lost value several months ago when China announced they would no longer take them from the U.S., and getting rid of what they collect is becoming more expensive and

difficult.

His visit to the city council came after he sent them a letter asking for a rate increase as of Sept. 1.

The city council has not yet agreed to the higher rates, which would apply to both residential and commercial customers.

“We plan to fulfill our contract with Polo,” Moring said last week.

“We just asked the City of Polo for a little help. If they don’t give us help we’re going to keep doing what we’re doing.”

Moring said he wants to charge for the bin or remove it.

The Ogle County Solid Waster Management Department removed the large recycling bins it provided in Byron, Oregon, Forreston, Monroe Center, and Rochelle earlier this year due to a 150 percent increase in the cost.

Those bins were also provided at no cost to the users.

Father wrote touching obituary for daughter in 1892 Editor’s note: The following is the obituary of 4-year-old Estie M. Mumma, written by her father Samuel W. Mumma, of Forreston, in May of 1892.

The newspaper clipping was found

by Darcy Metz and her family in her mother’s belongings.

Little Estie’s parents Samuel and Nellie (Cheesman) Mumma were both born in Adeline.

According to his obituary in 1939, he was the station agent for the Illinois Central Railroad for 43 years from 1882 to 1926.

Their son Claude Mumma, a doctor, lived in Polo at the time of his death in 1977, and one of their daughters Susan Mumma Buckley was the editor and publisher of the Forreston Journal at one time.

They had two more daughters Marjorie Mumma, a nurse in Chicago, and Dorothy Mumma Swift, who lived in Forreston.

Estie M., younger daughter of Samuel W. and Nellie A. Mumma, was born March 8th, 1888, and died May 20th, 1892, aged 4 years, 2 months and 12 days.

Little Estie, whose remains are now in the little casket, was known to be loved by all with whom she came in contact and with whom she associated.

Her last illness, which resulted in her death, was lung fever [pneumonia]. She was taken sick the night of the 10th of May. She was first taken with a severe chill, but afterward seemed to recover for a short time, and nothing seemed alarming for several days afterward as she was around in the house and played; nothing unusual excepting a cold.

After a short time a fever laid hold upon her, and the family physician was called only to find that the dread disease — lung fever — had settled.

Although her lungs became at once alarming, no thought was entertained of little Estie dying, until only a few hours previous to her death, when it made a change, and they realized that Estie would soon join the angel band.

Oh what a short time between the realization and the fulfillment of the sad end that had been slowly coming and yet unknown.

It was hard to believe that Estie was going. Oh no, they thought it impossible that their darling babe should be taken from them.

They hoped against hope — they fought for her as long as they could, but Death, the conqueror, claimed her as his own at about 5 o’clock Friday evening, May 20th.

She was conscious to the last minute. She watched every move with great interest and with an expression that seems to cry, “Oh help me!”

Oh what a dark hour.

Yet she passed slowly and fearlessly down the valley and the shadow of death. She had company to the valley when she passed from us and went alone.

She has passed through death, and it is the belief of all that she is in the arms of a kind, loving Saviour, where sorrow and pain, and fear, and death can not come.

We miss little Estie.

She was a joy to our home. She was a shining star in the firmament, and a light to our pathway.

Young as she was, she shared our joys and sorrows only as such a one can, but we miss her everywhere.

Those little feet that were swift to run to us, the little hands and arms that grasped us to her bosom, that little tongue that lisped words of love to us lies silent in her narrow bed.

No more on earth can little Estie greet us. She has gone from our midst to join our loved ones gone before and may God help us so to live that our end may be as peaceful and that our assurance of heaven be as certain as hers. — S.W.M.

The Village of Progress Foundation is offering a $500, one-year scholarship to be awarded at their annual banquet scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of Ogle County, be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area

related to the disabled, or a fulltime undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled.

Applications must be received by Tuesday, Oct. 1, be completed on the foundation application form, and include at least three written references.

Those wishing an application are encouraged to call the Village of Progress at 815-732-2126.

LeFevres to celebrate 70th anniversary Walter and Irene (Floto) LeFevre will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Sept.

They were married on Sept. 11, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris, and have lived in Mt. Morris their entire married life.

Eagle’s Nest Art Group will begin its program year on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a tour of Art Casting of Illinois, 5 Madison St., Oregon.

The tour begins at 2 p.m. Owners Harry and Karly Spell will lead the tour and discuss the workings of their bronze foundry which specializes in fine art sculpture.

One of the most significant projects cast by the foundry was the Michael Jordon statue that was installed outside the United Center in Chicago.

The statue is the work of artists Julie Rotblatt Amray and Omri

Amray of Timeless Creations in Chicago.

The tour also includes the Adagio Fine Arts Gallery, which is a part of the casting facility.

Among the many services offered at Art Casting of Illinois are fabrication, prototyping, bronze work, restoration, conservation, and consulting.

The Oregon Rock River Sweep will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. with check-in at 7:30 a.m. behind Conover Square in Oregon.

The sweep will work to clean up the banks of the Rock River from Mud Creek Road to Castle Rock State Park.

Morris Elevator Implement Department. The Mt. Morris Elevator was located at 309 Wesley Ave., currently Jeff Adams’ inBronze Studio-Gallery-Foundry. Photo supplied pneumonia in 1905 at the age of 53, his wife Louisa and Mongan’s grandfather, Theodore Horst, 15 years old, continued with the dairy and farming the 350 acres.

When Louisa died in 1925, the farm was sold in two parcels; the majority of the acreage was purchased by Ted Horst and his wife, Ruth (Lookabaugh) Horst, whose father was the blacksmith in Mt. Morris.

Mongan noted that each generation has encountered its share of harrowing times.

In 1914, “men acting for the state and federal government killed and buried 103 head of livestock on the premises” due to an infection of hoof and mouth disease.

“A trench was dug fifty feet long, seven feet deep and eight feet wide, which required several men and a

team of horses with a scraper over two days to excavate,” an account read.

The livestock were driven into

the trench and killed by shooting.

The disease originated from tankage purchased from a packing house in Chicago that was fed to the hogs months before.

The farm underwent a rigid quarantine. The diseased animals were appraised at market value of seven and one-half cents per pound, according to the Mt. Morris Index in its Dec. 3, 1914 edition.

In the 1920s, the farmhouse caught fire, but was saved. In September of 1997, the farm suffered its worst loss from a devastating fire that burned the massive dairy barn and most of the outbuildings.

During the late 1940s, a group of former Harlan, Iowa, World War II pilots and reconnaissance photographers formed the Zekan-Robbins Company.

These men, traveled around the country visiting local communities taking aerial photographs they hoped to sell to property owners and area businesses.

Many newspapers ran Mystery Farm Contests, publishing one photo a week and awarding prizes to participants who answered correctly.

The Horst family farm, rural Mt. Morris, received the historical distinction of a Centennial Farm during the 2019 Illinois State Fair.

The farm’s owners Rich and Connie Mongan, of Mt. Morris, were guests of John M. Sullivan, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, at the State Fair Ag Day Breakfast on Aug.13 in Springfield.

Their application for designation as a Centennial Farm was approved

by Governor Bruce Rauner and the Director of Agriculture, Raymond Poe, last Dec. 17.

The Horst farm joins three Mt. Morris Township farms registered with the program: the Thompson farm, established in 1841), the Stengel farm, established in 1880, and the Scheffler farm, established in 1899.

The Illinois Centennial, Sesquicentennial, Bicentennial Program was established in 1972 to honor the generations of farmers who have worked to maintain family farms in Illinois.

Since its inception, more than 10,000 Centennial, Sesquicentennial, and Bicentennial farms have been registered.

In Ogle County, 157 farms are registered with the program.

“Applying for the Centennial Farm certification was a matter of pride for us,” Connie Mongan said.

“Rich and I will be the fourth generation to live on the farm; I grew up there. My grandfather, Theodore (Ted) Horst, and my mother, Marjorie (Horst) Beard were born in the farmhouse.

The Horst farm was originally purchased by Konrad and Louisa (Lohafer) Horst in 1886 and is currently owned by their lineal descendant, their great-granddaughter, Connie Mongan.

At first they weren’t too sure what they had accomplished because the native plants and weeds were hard to tell apart.

They mowed it back to 10 inches high about once a month to ensure the native plants wouldn’t be shaded out by the faster growing weeds, and to let them build a root base and get established.

“We mowed it again the following June and then let it go,” he said. The following spring, they did their first burn to discourage the cool season weeds and warm the ground for the prairie plants.

“By the third year, we knew we had what we wanted,” he said.

The reward has been a growing number and variety of native wildlife, including monarch butterflies, whose numbers worldwide are dwindling at an alarming rate.

“It would be a shame and a great loss if we had no more monarchs,” Kielsmeier said. “It’s a sin to let species disappear. Life is cheapened by the loss. Stewardship goes back to the origin biblical mandate that God gave Adam to cultivate the land and keep it, to use it but not abuse it.”

The colorful orange and black butterflies are thriving at the Long Family Farm, as Kielsmeier pointed out their caterpillars feeding on milkweed and a pair of adults mating on a yellow coneflower.

“I’ve learned a lot along the way, through reading, and trial and error,” Kielsmeier said. “The prairie is always changing. It has its own unique personality and it changes from year to year.”

Besides the prairie, five more

acres are planted to native trees and berry-producing shrubs that provide food and shelter for birds and small animals.

Several large oaks grow along the banks of a small stream. The stream banks are also lush with white pines and various native shrubs, as well as forbs Kielsmeier has planted throughout the years.

When he started, there was only brome grass there among the oaks, he said.

The variety of plants supports a variety of animal communities in several ways, he said.

Small animals and some birds such as wild turkeys, pheasants, and bob-whites take shelter under the pines in winter when the snow drifts deep across the prairie, he said.

Kielsmeier said his first grade teacher Mrs. Priller gets credit for his interest in nature, particularly butterflies and moths.

“She encouraged us to bring in bugs and butterflies,” he said. “That really piqued my interest. She really fanned the flames.”

He spends six to eight hours every week in the prairie from April through October.

“It’s not required. I love doing it,” he said. “it’s a place I can bring my family and friends to show them the grandeur of God’s creation.”

He encourages everyone to plant natives in their yards, and has helped family and friends get prairie plots going.

He stressed the importance of buying genuine native plants from a nursery.

“The average homeowner can make a bigger difference than they think by just planting a small area of natives. Your don’t have to have acres,” he said. “If you plant it they will come, meaning the wildlife.”

About the prairie Illinois, the Prairie State, once had 22 million acres of tall grass prairie. Less than one-tenth of one percent of that remains.

An acre of established prairie has an estimated 24,000 pounds of roots, some of which go 10 to 12 feet down into the soil.

“It holds the topsoil better than any other ecosystem on earth and it absorbs water,” said Ken Kielsmeier.

That means it prevents run-off and soil erosion during heavy rainfall.

The root system of the prairie slowly releases the water it has absorbed into springs and streams, helping to maintain the water table.

Mumford also picked off two passes to go with his seven tackles.

“We move him around all over the place on defense,” Bumsted said. “He’s a special kid that can makes plays all over the field.”

Polo opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Parker Wolber.

Schlarman’s Marcus Blurton threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also intercepted three times.

For all the talk about things changing for Polo football with the Marcos’ move to 8-man football for the 2019 season, the action between the sidelines Friday night looked very familiar.

The Marcos came out playing stout defense and punishing the Danville Schlarman Hilltopper defense with a power running game out of the I-formation.

And just like they did so often in 11-man play, the Marcos were successful.

Polo beat the Hilltoppers 54-14 to kickoff a new era of Marco football.

“We have Matt Scholl, who has been with me a long time and was a great player here, coordinating our offense,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said. “We decided we were going to come out running the I-formation like we always have and keep doing it until they stopped us.”

Schlarman, which was fielding a football team for the first time since playing three games in 2013 – five of Schlarman’s players participated in the Hoopeston Area co-op last season – started with the ball but punted after three plays. Polo’s Tucker Mumford had two of his seven tackles on the opening drive.

“We really didn’t have any clue what they were going to do,” Mumford said. “We knew that the quarterback and receiver were all-conference players. We just wanted to be physical and play team defense.”

Polo took over on the Schlarman 49 and proceeded to run the ball 11 straight times, concluding with a 5-yard touchdown run by Alex Davies.

Schlarman barely touched the ball its next three offensive chances. The Hilltoppers fumbled on their first play of the next drive, and then punted after three plays on their third possession. After Polo’s third touchdown, the Marcos executed and recovered an onside kick.

Four plays later, Bumsted scored on a 17-yard run that put Polo up 32-0. By halftime, the Marcos had outgained Schlarman 212 yards to 39.

“Schlarman came out running the I-formation, and we were so happy to see that,” Bumsted said.

“We didn’t have to worry about them spreading it out and throwing it all over.”

Davies and Jesse Powell both rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown for the Marcos (1-0). Mumford had 71 rushing yards and a touchdown, and he also connected

Cardinals work out jitters in 30-12 win over Dakota

Head coach Kyle Zick called it the sloppiest game he’s ever been around.

Surviving four lost fumbles and seven costly penalties for 60 yards, the No. 1-ranked team in 1A defeated No. 8 Dakota by a score of 30-12.

Dakota never threatened, falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter and having an abysmal performance in the red zone.

A staunch Cardinal defense kept Dakota out of the end zone three times in the first half. This, after star quarterback Josh Clark had driven his team inside the 10-yard line.

“Our line was really upset about the penalties,” lineman Derek DeVries said. “We put the hammer down.”

Austin Mitchell ran 36 yards over the left side of his line to give Forreston an 8-0 first-quarter lead after a bad punt gave the Cardinals a short field.

Minutes later, Jordan Neuschwander got past a tackle attempt at the line of scrimmage and made it 14-0 on a 24-yard counter.

Zach Cederholm set up the score with the recovery of a f u m b l e d pitch by Dakota. Colton Moser also had a tackle for loss on the shor 3-play Dakota series.

“I was happy with the way our line moved them, but we fumbled too much,” Cullor said. “It was way subpar for us.”

Dakota did come to make a 17-play drive, but it stalled at the 5-yard line. The Indians got the ball right on a fumbled pitch from Cullor.

Cullor only threw one pass and that resulted in a 13-yard touchdown to Dom Christensen, making it 22-0 early in the third quarter.

Dakota would never threaten after Cullor and Christensen’s perfectly executed TD. In the second quarter, the speedster Christensen almost broke free for what would be a 94-yard score, but was grabbed by his jersey at midfield and lost the ball, emblematic of the Cardinal fumble parade.

“We couldn’t string together a drive,” Zick said. “It was sloppy, but Dakota can probably say the same thing. What is surprising to me with all the penalties and fumbles is we have 16 seniors.”

Zick, who serves as defensive coordinator, had to be at least happy with the defensive effort.

Moser caught it in mid air for Forreston.

It was DeVries, Travis Wilson, and Jacob Dye putting a sandwich sack on Clark for another fourthdown stop inside the 10.

“We moved the ball on them (20 to 19 first downs), but left 3-4 scores out there,” Dakota coach Joe Free said.

The normally proficient Forreston ground attack “only” had 237 yards rushing, with Ethan Mulder out front with 77 of them.

“Mulder’s going to be a beast for us, but we have to do a better job than that,” Zick said.

Neuschwander, the NUIC 100 and 200-meter sprint champ as a sophomore, added a second touchdown later in the game, as depth-laden Forreston used a 6-back rotation, similar to previous years.

Just when it looked like Forreston was going to thwart Clark and

company for the fourth time inside the 10-yard line, the Indians converted on fourth-and-1.

Three plays later, Clark ran in for a Dakota’s first score to make it 22-6 as the third quarter came to an end.

“He’s a tough, tough quarterback and he’s smart,” Zick said. “I’m happy how we contained him.”

Clark was sacked three times, the last an 8-yard loss by DeVries and Seth Nelson.

“They manhandled us up front,” Free said.

With the win, Forreston extends a streak of not losing at Dakota in last 10 years. Both teams came into the game with a combined six state titles between them.

Up Next The Cardinals return home on Friday to take on Galena, a 22-20 loser to West Carroll. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Senior night will also be held prior to the game.

Cardinals just as fast in years’ past

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com First impressions of my coverage of Forreston versus Dakota football: The Cardinals are just as fast as in years’ past. Physically, not so much.

But, that is most likely attributed to Garett Badertscher and Mitchell Heinz having graduated.

Those two brutes brought a physical presence not often seen in 1A football.

Don’t get me wrong. Forreston is tough on both sides of the ball and hit hard, but not as big overall or physical.

Execution and technique are highly stressed by coach Zick. If you do that, you don’t necessarily need to be the biggest kid on the block.

Another factor to consider is not being too critical after the first game of the year. I learned that last year after watching Forreston in the first week against Du-Pec. They looked out of sync, especially in the first half of that game. But, they got better and better, culminating with the semifinal win over Le-Win. Bottom line - even with the fumbles and penalties, Forreston is in a good spot as they contend for a 1A state title with rival L-W. They also have a very capable leader at quar-

terback in Bailey Cullor.

In chatting with Dakota’s athletic director, Chad Ferguson, I learned he was a 1989 grad of Mt. Morris. and that his mother still lives in town.

On my scenic drive through farmland to Dakota, I listened to the first part of the Polo game on the radio.

From what I gathered, though three less players are on the field, football is football.

This week offer an interesting cultural experience with a trip to Jacksonville to play thee Illinois School for the Deaf.

It will be the first game of the season for ISD, who only plays four Illinois teams. Their other three games are against deaf schools in Wisconsin, Missouri and Kansas.

Compared to other 8-man teams, Polo’s travel schedule isn’t that bad, with only long trips to Jacksonville and Pawnee, both near Springfield.

Saturday was spent at Huskie Stadium for a defensive slugfest between NIU and ISU. It was punts galore, with nether team getting in

gear offensively until late in the game.

James Robinson, the all-time IHSA rushing leader from Rockford Lutheran started for ISU and was held to less yards the entire game than he often would on one carry in a high school game.

I had to chuckle at my friend Jay Taft from the Rockford Register Star, who was sent to do an article on Robinson. There wasn’t anything to write about.

At least Robinson played. I was assigned by SVM to do a piece on lineman Peyton Asche of EPC, another ISU Redbird. Asche, a 6-8, 320-pound redshirt freshman didn’t get into the game.

But, he was on the travel squad and expected to be a starter next season. I chatting with Asche after the game, he was an extremely polite and disciplined young man, the type that gives me hope for this country.

One team that was only too glad to see Robinson graduate was Oregon. The Hawks faced Robinson’s old team at Landers-Loomis Field and the result was somewhat of a surprise.

After beating Lutheran in OT last year and adding a passing game to its arsenal, the Hawks were seen by many prognosticators as the team to beat.

However, with private schools like Lutheran, it is difficult to know how good they are going to be from year to year.

The Crusaders left little doubt who the superior team was, though Oregon was beset with poor field position for much of the game. Another drawback for Oregon is only having seven seniors.

With juggernauts G-K, Stillman, Byron and Dixon coming up, it will be a rough road for the Hawks.

Congratulations to Sam Ramirez and Mark Herman for starting their 20th year of broadcasting Oregon football on 95.7FM. Radio coverage is everchanging, with WRHL adding Facebook to its radio play-by-play. Besides audio, a person can view the game.

Fans throughout Illinois, especially in the Chicago area, have been complaining about the decline of newspaper coverage for high school sports. It’s a positive that radio continues to step up its game.

Let’s face it, high school football is a different now than before.

It seemed odd not to have a preliminary contest prior to the varsity on Friday. Gates will be down, less concessions sold and there isn’t that excitement level building up into the main event.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Volleyball Forreston defeated Winnebago 25-22, 23-25, 25-16 on Aug. 29.

Individual leaders for the Lady Cardinals were: Alexus Houston, 20 kills; Brooke Boettner, 28 assists, seven aces; and Kara Erdmann, 23 digs.

Oregon def. Amboy 25-15, 25-17: The Hawks pulled out a nonconference win on the road on Aug. 29.

Ella Martin had 15 assists, one ace, and three kills for Oregon. Alice Stenico had 13 kills and one ace followed by Jenae Bothe with six kills, two aces, and a block and Olivia Ankney with six digs and two aces.

Mallory Powers had six digs for the Clippers, and Eden Lindenmeyer and Olivia Dinges each had five. Gabby Jones had 15 assists.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Aug. 28 Reana Foster, 20, of DeKalb, was arrested at 12:30 a.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for speeding on Illinois 38. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Amber Anders, 26, of Rochelle, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant for bringing contraband into a penal institution. She had no bond pending a court appearance.

If each vehicle donated one non-perishable food item the OCSWMD will have a lot of food to deliver to the needy.

Items accepted for the food drop off must be within their expiration dates, sealed, and non-perishable.

Items most in need include canned fruits and vegetables, boxed pastas, mac & cheese, noodles, canned soups, cereal, canned meats and tuna, hamburger helper, pancake mix, pancake syrup, peanut butter, and jelly.

New bar soaps, toothpaste, and toothbrushes will also be accepted for donation.

Donations will be accepted at all remaining electronic recycling events throughout the remainder of the year.

Accepted items for electronics recycling include all televisions, computers, computer hardware and cables, laptops, tablets, cell phones, computer monitors, printers, desktop copiers, FAX machines, DVDs and VCRs, cable and satellite boxes, video gaming systems, stereo equipment, phone systems, holiday light strands, extension cords, boom boxes, calculators, adding machines, UPS power supplies, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, and printer cartridges.

Aug. 26 Dustin N. Garcia, 29, of Oregon, was arrested at 12:40 p.m. for theft over $500. Garcia was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Leroy C. Brooks, 39, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 6:59 p.m. for unlawful window tint. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Pines Road.

Kaleb M. Law, 30, of Carpentersville, was issued a citation at 10:21 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 500 block of W. Washington Street.

Aug. 28 Kindra J. Williams, 39, of Forreston, was arrested at 7:44 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Williams was also issued citations for improper left turn, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver.

Williams was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred at the intersection if IL Route 64 and Limekiln Road.

Aug. 29 Lucas D. Pauley, 21, Rockford, was issued a citation at 10:15 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred at the 4th and Washington Streets intersection.

Aug. 31 At 9:27 a.m., police responded to a car vs pedestrian traffic crash at the

intersection of Fifth Street and Washington Streets involving a 2008 Ford driven by Roger L. Miller, 60, of Mt. Morris, that struck pedestrian Nancy Arbogast, 76, of Oregon. Miller was issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Robert J. Dorathy, 33, of Sterling, was issued a citation at 8:22 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 200 block of N. 4th Street.

Sept. 1 Ashlee L. Parisi, 29, of Kings, was issued a citation at 7:12 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 500 block of N. 4th Street.

At 8:03 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the parking lot of the Shell gas station, 201 S. 4th Street, in the parking lot, resulting in the arrest of Bailey M. Snyder, 21, of Franklin Grove, for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug

paraphernalia. Snyder was also issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver and issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. Snyder was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Thirteen parking citations and 10 verbal/written warnings were issued from Aug. 26 - Sept. 1.

JOHN R. GROVE John R. Grove, 87, Leaf River, died on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019 at Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon.

John was born on Sept.5, 1931 in Leaf River, the son of Roy L. and Alice (Kapperman) Grove.

He graduated from Leaf River High School in the Class of 1950.

John served in the United States Army during the Korean War. John married Augusta “Gussie” Hagemann on July 19, 1953 in Leaf River.

He worked as a farmer for 40 years in

JOHN E. KENNEY John E. Kenney, 80, of Polo, died on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019 at Kindred Hospital in Sycamore.

John was born April 19, 1939 in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Rita (Robertson) Kenney.

He was a 1957 graduate of Dixon High School and later married Lydia Jimenez on Feb. 15, 1958 in Sterling.

John was retired from Commonwealth Edison after 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and active in his parish of St.

RACHEL M. (PETERSON) MAPLES

Rachel Marie (Peterson) Maples, 31, of Newport, Tennessee, formerly of Mt. Morris, and her husband, James Allen Maples, 53, of Newport, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019 from injuries they received in a motorcycle accident near their home in Tennessee.

Rachel was born on Jan. 14, 1988 at Rockford Memorial Hospital to Monti and Jeanette (Hinton) Peterson. She joined big sister, Lindsey, brother Brian, and their cat Pudder, at home.

She was a 2007 graduate of Oregon High School and worked in park maintenance at White Pines State Park and at the Oregon Park District’s Nash Recreation Center. She earned her scuba diving certificate in 2006.

Rachel took tremendous pride in keeping the “Pines” trimmed, mowed, and good looking for locals as well as visitors.

She enjoyed working summers with her park “buddies” to make sure the state park, located across the road from her childhood home, met her high standards of presentation and was a good place to live for all the native critters she enjoyed seeing almost every day during her rounds.

She loved saving wayward and struggling plants often moving them to appropriate places and giving them the

He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, golfing, fishing up north, four wheeling, snowmobiling, mushroom hunting.

After his retirement, he spent many hours woodworking.

He was always there for his family and friends when they needed help, and socializing with his friends was important to him.

John is survived by his wife, Gussie Grove, Leaf River; daughter, Debbie (Gregg) Bergin, Mt. Morris; grandchildren, Eric (Christina) Bergin, German Valley, Kirsten (Michael) Osterloo, Champaign, and Allison Bergin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Emma Bergin, German Valley, and Matthew Osterloo, Champaign; brother, Bruce (Velma) Grove,

Dayton, Washington; sister, Margorie Harmon, Annandale, Virginia.

John was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Stephen Bergin, and an infant granddaughter; great-grandson, John Walter Bergin; two brothers, Leon and Royal Grove; and sister, Edna Gates.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 2 at Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with Rev. Josh Ehrler officiating.

Burial was at Lightsville Cemetery, Lightsville.

Memorials made be made to Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is dearly missed.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 211 N. Franklin Ave., Polo, Illinois.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the church with Reverend Joseph P. Naill officiating.

Private burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Mary Catholic Church in Polo.

Arrangements are being handled by the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.

She also used those same artistic skills to help her Mom create colorful and unique baked goods and candy for friends and family.

She often helped her Dad in assisting him with his mechanical-related tasks. She was a willing chauffeur for her Grandma Ida. She volunteered for the Autumn on Parade festival since the age of 12, starting out helping set up and tear down prior to and after the festival, then supervising pick up and transport of garbage during the festival, and ultimately lending a hand in any other areas where she could help including crowd control.

Every year she delighted in shopping for those extra special Christmas and birthday gifts for family and friends and diving into Black Friday sales with her sister, Lindsey.

She married James Allen Maples of

Newport, Tennessee, on May 7, 2019, and moved to her new home in the scenic foothills of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

He is survived by his three sons, Joshua (Tabitha) Maples, North Carolina, Caylais Maples, Seattle, Washington, Jairus Maples, Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren; and his loyal dog, Sugar.

She was predeceased by paternal grandparents, June and Charlie Peterson; maternal grandfather, Earl Hinton; cousin, Karshan Peterson-Lettig; uncle, Jim Albert; and aunt, Mindy Peterson.

While our hearts are breaking as we contemplate life without Rachel’s smile, sincere generosity, empathy and humor, and helping hands, we take solace in knowing she is already helping all the dogs, cats, birds, mice, frogs, toads, bunnies, fish, spiders, dragonflies, and all other living creatures return home as they cross over.

Joint services were held for Rachel and Allen in Newport, Tennessee, on Sept. 4.

A memorial service will also be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Oregon Church of God, 860 W. Oregon Trail Rd., Oregon, Illinois.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with a service and Celebration of Life to follow.
