The serving line, manned by members of Forreston American Legion Post 308, had a steady stream of diners wanting to try yet another team’s entry in the premier event, brought to town by Mission Zero Hundred Hours, based in Oswego.

“Everything has been good so far.

I’m working my way through,” said Tim Drayton, of Forreston, as he headed back for the line.

The whole event was about providing help for at-risk veterans.

The mission of MZHH, a not-forprofit agency, is to reduce the suicide rate of veterans by providing those at risk with culinary arts programs, jobs placement, competition barbecue cooking team excursions, and culinary business related services and support.

Five teams took part in the Saluting with Smoke training exercise, getting an early start with each of them cooking five racks of ribs and three pork butts for the competition.

Eight veterans were placed with the teams to be part of the barbecuing.

The public was invited to buy tickets to taste and cast votes for their favorites. About 100 turned out to give it a try.

MZHH co-founder and vice president Hank Ritts handed out paper bowls and jokingly reminded the crowd of the rules.

“Remember, you can only try each team’s once,” he said.

The barbecue teams came to town Friday evening, setting up their RVs and equipment at the park.

While the tasting was going on Saturday, Ron Lewen, of Batavia, owner of Captain Ron’s Brew N Que, the winning team, was cleaning up his cooker.

The competition is friendly, he said — at least for the most part.

“We’re all friends until about 10 o’clock on a Saturday morning. Then we want to kick each other’s butts,” he said with a chuckle.

Ritts said Tuesday that the event raised about $950, the proceeds of which will be split equally between the village, the Forreston American Legion Post, and MZHH. “It was a wonderful experience for us and it accomplished what we wanted it to,” he said.

He said the Forreston competition was a trial run for the Competitors Series KCBS Contest in Yorkville in November.

The winner of the fourth U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition will finally be revealed on Saturday, Aug. 24 on StrawFest Day in downtown Mt. Morris.

Straw bale races, square dancing, food, and art will all be part of the celebration that marks the end of the two-week contest.

Anyone viewing the 10 straw sculptures displayed on the downtown campus since Aug. 9 is invited to vote for his or her favorite until 4 p.m. on Saturday. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m. at the band shell.

The day will begin with the arrival of food trucks at 11:30 a.m.

Other events, all held on or near the campus, include the Village Antique Mercantile from noon to 7 p.m., blacksmith demonstrations from noon to 4 p.m., mechanical bull riding from noon to 4 p.m., round straw bale races at 2 p.m., square dancing with caller Bob Asp (experienced and inexperienced are welcome) from 4 to 6 p.m., and a vehicle airbrush show.

A performance by Illinois Rail, a bluegrass band, will wrap up the evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The straw sculptures, including “Straw Saxophone a Musical Tribute,” this year’s community build, will remain on display through Sunday, Aug. 25.

The Old Sandstone Gallery, also on the campus, will be open, featuring “The Airbrush, a Place in History,”

Help clean up the Rock River on Saturday, Sept. 7 Volunteers are needed to pick up trash, debris The 10th annual Oregon Area Rock River Sweep will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“The Rock River missed its clean up last year due to persistent high water, so it’s time to put a little extra work into getting it to look good,” said Terry Schuster, event organizer and city commissioner.

Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, behind Conover Square, at the intersection of North Second and Franklin Streets in Oregon.

Volunteers are needed on foot or in boats to clean up a nine mile section of the Rock River, from north of the boat landing on Illinois 2 to the Castle Rock State Park boat landing, for this annual effort to protect and preserve this beautiful local resource.

Boaters, paddlers, river land owners, scout groups, service organizations and individuals are needed to help pick up trash as well as sort the

Students can earn community service hours by helping out.

For the third year, White Pelican Canoe & Kayak Rental Inc., will provide a limited number of canoes for use for the sweep and will also provide free shuttle service from Castle Rock boat landing back to Kiwanis Park for those with their

own canoes or kayaks.

Two years ago, around 50 people participated in the effort.

“With the flooding of the Rock River last year and this spring, the Rock River is expected to have a lot of waste which may have floated downstream and settled along the banks. This needs to be removed,” Schuster said.

All participants are asked to check in at the Kiwanis Park, where they will be assigned to a section of the river to focus on.

“Those with motorized boats can then proceed to the boat landings to cover their section,” Schuster said.

“Those on foot will walk or drive to areas accessible from shore.”

Several drop-off sites for trash will be located along the cleanup route, where crews from the Oregon Park District and the Solid Waste Management Department will pick it up and take it back to Kiwanis Park for sorting and recycling.

Refreshments will be available afterward.

Gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bug spray, snacks and water will be available, as well as a limited number of T-shirts for sale.

Participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, long pants, and old shoes, and to bring a reusable water bottle to the event to reduce waste.

To celebrate the culmination of the 2019 U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition, Encore Mt. Morris! will welcome back the band Illinois Rail, who will be performing their brand of traditional, new, original and gospel bluegrass music for a two-hour show in the band shell Saturday, Aug. 24 starting at 6:30 p.m.

“Anyone who’s seen their concerts here in the past will fondly recall the exceptional quality of this band,” said Mt. Morris Jamboree organizer Larry Ubben.

The group consists of Dave and Peg Shippert, Cliff Angeln, Doug Knecht, and Gary Dickson.

Illinois Rail is a high energy bluegrass and gospel band that hales from central Illinois.

Several of the members have more than years of bluegrass band experience.

The group came together in 2008 and shares a love of traditional bluegrass music, as well as the bluegrass music of today.

Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, The Cox Family, and Ronda Vincent inspire just some of the music played by the group.

“The band offers award-winning banjo picking, spirited mandolin and dobro, rock solid flat picking and bass with exceptional vocals,” Ubben said.

Illinois Rail has played a variety of festivals and private functions over the years and has done a recording session for WTVP, Channel 47, Peoria, for their use in public broadcasting.

The group has released three CDs which include various instrumentals, cover songs and several original tunes.

Oregon man dies Aug. 16 in workplace accident SHAW MEDIA Services are set for an Oregon man killed Aug. 16 when he was pinned between a parked semi and train car shortly before 11 a.m. at the Rochelle business where he worked.

Ethan R. Thomas, 35, formerly of Chana, was pronounced dead at

Rochelle Community Hospital.

According to the Rochelle Police Department log, as reported by Rochelle radio station WRHL, Thomas was on the side ladder of a rail car of a train on the east side of the Coated Sand Solutions, 1951 S. Steward Road, when he got pinned between the car and semi.

Rochelle police declined to issue

a news release or comment further on the incident.

Results from an autopsy conducted on Monday indicated that Thomas died from blunt trauma to his chest.

Thomas was a 2002 Oregon High School graduate and worked with his father, Howard “Duke” Thomas, at Thomas Plumbing and Heat-

Among others, he is survived by his parents, Duke and Mindy Thomas, of Chana, and brothers Ryan and Garrett, of Oregon, and Jordan, of Mt. Morris.

COUNTY ROAD WORK

Intersection will become a 4-way stop on Aug. 26 Motorists on Chana Road need to be prepared for a change at the intersection with Flagg Road.

The Ogle County Highway Department will convert the intersection, which is southeast of Oregon, to a four-way stop on Mon-

day, Aug. 26.

“The intersection has been a two-way stop for over 50 years; however, over the decades traffic patterns and roadside conditions have changed resulting in the need to add stop signs on Chana

Road,” said county engineer Jeremy Ciesiel.

Currently stop signs are located only on Flagg Road, and traffic on Chana Road is not required to stop.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Aug. 14 Montana Ils, 22, of Freeport, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 10:39 p.m. in the 16,000 block of West Illinois 72.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Mariko Ubale, 26, of Chicago, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving 26-34 mph over the limit. Ubale posted $5,000 (10%) bond and is scheduled to appear in court of Sept. 6.

Brain Games team takes third at state The 2019 Senior Brain Games team from the Mt. Morris Senior Center took home third place at the state competition on Aug. 12 at the Illinois State Fair.

The team from Ogle County won the competition at the Mt. Morris Senior Center in May to move on to the state competition.

Each of the 102 counties in Illinois can send a team on to the state level.

“We are proud to have the third place team in the entire state from Ogle County and Mt. Local rockabilly band DFS will close the 2019 Mt. Morris Jamboree season with a free two hour show on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

DFS first started as a group that was to be a rockabilly Christmas band called “Ted & The Mistletones.”

“The idea exploded into something much bigger, wanting to take the band further than playing just the holidays,” said Larry Ubben, event organizer. “A setlist of ten was made, then 20 and so on, now they play over 50 songs every show for you to swing to all night long.”

The band is made up of four gents who love and live the rockabilly lifestyle, including lead singer Ted O’Donnell, Harry Euhus on lead guitar and vocals, Rick Nolting on upright bass and vocals, and Bill Englund on drums.

DFS was inducted into the Rockford Area Music Industry’s Hall of Fame this spring.

The future of DFS has an album or two involved and maybe some small touring.

Rotary’s Fall Fun on the River The Oregon Rotary Club will host a fundraiser, Fall Fun of the River, on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the deck at Maxson’s Riverside Restaurant.

The proceeds will be used by the club for the Operation Warm project, which provides coats for Oregon Elementary School students, scholarships, and other activities to support the community.

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com A new era of Marcos football has opened with a lot of new faces.

Going to 8-man football this fall, Polo saw a jump in the number of players interested in playing. Last season, in its final year of 11-man football, the roster had 23 guys. This year, that number has grown to 33.

“It’ll be nice when we get the pads on and we don’t have to scrimmage against garbage cans anymore,” senior lineman Jace Coffey said. “We can actually see people moving. It’s going to be different, but it will be a lot better for practice and getting better for the first game.”

Every year, the players do a little recruiting through the hallways, trying to get more people to play. This year, they went all-out.

“We convinced everybody that we can make a long run this year, we’ve got a lot in us,” Coffey said. “I’m happy with how many kids came out.”

“I honestly tell you that if we had

stayed at 11-man, we would have had seven varsity players,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said. “That’s where it was at the end of last year. We’ve got 11 freshmen out and nine sophomores. Our numbers have gone up, and a lot of the reason a lot of kids are coming out is to play 8-man.

We’re not playing the traditional teams that we play. We don’t know a lot of the teams that we’re playing, and it looks like fun, so that’s why they came out.”

That boost in numbers is even evident in the senior class.

“Last year we had three seniors go out; this year I think we have six,” senior quarterback Tucker Mumford said. “So far everyone’s doing well, they’re getting used to it. Even the new guys are showing energy and showing like they’ve been here all 4 years.”

New faces, though, mean new players having to get up to speed quickly. The summer schedule, and the Marcos’ strong attendance at their summer workouts, certainly helped with that.

“We did a lot of stuff in the summer, running plays and putting in our defense and running schemes, so we got the kids up to speed,” Bumsted said. “The only thing they haven’t had to do yet is hit.”

It is a season of change for Cole Faivre, even without the team’s switch to 8-man. The junior served as a fullback last year. Now he has moved to the offensive line.

“It’s not much different, because at fullback you’re doing a lot of blocking too,” he said. “It’s just a lot more physical on the line. You’ve got some big boys you’ve got to block. It’s about the same.”

With the work the Marcos have put in over the summer and through the first week of the fall practices, he has seen things progressing.

“We’re looking a lot better than we have,” Faivre said. “We’re firing off the ball quick, we’re hitting. We went out to a camp in Iowa and we were getting off the ball quick and driving people. We looked real nice.”

That camp was put on by William Penn University in Oskaloosa – about

an hour southeast of Des Moines – at the end of July for 8-man teams. Seeing what other 8-man teams do and trying out some of their own plays against other teams served as an eye-opener for the Marcos.

“There are things we thought we could do that we couldn’t do just scheme-wise because there’s one less guy on the line of scrimmage,” Bumsted said. “But it helped us. It was very interesting.”

But even going from 11-man to 8-man, a lot of the game remains the same. Players are still expected to make their reads, make tackles, hand off the ball, and block for the ballcarrier. It’s just going to happen on a narrower field with fewer people.

“One of the big things it helped with was knowing what we were bringing over from 11-man and what we would have to adjust to 8-man,” Faivre said. “We would say ‘OK, this might not work so well, we have to adjust this.’ I think it’s really helped with our plays, and making them more for 8-man.”

What started on a whim when good friend Brian Weidman of the Dixon Telegraph hired me to do Friday football games in 1996 has evolved into a rich and meaningful experience.

My life has been enhanced in ways I could have never imagined because of relationships formed with players, coaches, administrators, fans, parents, and officials from towns all over the northwest part of the state.

This year will to be a bit different, though. Because of two close family members having health issues and a desire to travel more, I am curtailing much of my game coverage, previews, etc.

The only certainty is that a weekly column will be done. That is what gets the most feedback from readers anyway.

Covering high school sports is a genuine slice of America and at least I can still have a small hand in it.

two schools will be another dandy.

A major change in the NUIC conference is football teams arranged geographically instead of by enrollment.

However, Forreston still plays all the heavy hitters, with Galena, Dakota and L-W being the non-divisional foes.

The biggest effect will be on the smaller-enrollment teams, who will struggle mightily against the likes of Forreston and Le-Win. Will it drive some of them to join Polo and River Ridge in 8-man ball? Aquin, AFC, Milledgeville and Orangeville are prime candidates.

Not just in the NUIC, but in small conferences all over the state, it will be very interesting to see how the 8-man movement progresses.

There are currently 16 teams spread throughout the state in what is called the Illinois 8-Man Football Association. Right now, the biggest drawback is excessive travel.

For the second year in a row, there will also be a playoff to determine an

8-man champion. With a pedigree stronger than anyone else, look for Polo to be a major contender.

The Marcos have also seen an uptick in numbers, perhaps because of a new brand of football.

Is it possible Oregon may be throwing the ball more than they have in the past? While walking by the football field earlier this summer, I thought it was a mirage, as 7-on-7 passing drills were taking place.

Then just a few days ago, I saw a practice formation with three receivers spread out instead of the usual wing-T. Apparently this isn’t my imagination.

That’s not the type of football I’ve come to expect out of the “ground and pound” Hawks. It might take some getting used to.

The position of quarterback is said to be the most important in all of sports, especially in the pros and college.

We’ve also seen that begin to filter down to the high schools.

These new breed of signal-callers are more athletic, can make reads, have advanced skill sets, understand play-calling and accustomed

to running a spread offense.

Oregon has first-hand experience seeing that in many of the quarterbacks they faced in the Big Northern.

I say this every August/September, but again am encouraging schools not to cancel sporting events because of heat.

Kids need to be tested, not given excuses to sit dormant.

It’s lawsuit mentality that often influences these cancellations, as many a school has told me it is a liability issue.

Let school administrators run the show in all interscholastic activities instead of living under the threat of lawyers.

On the hottest weekend of the summer, the Oregon Park District put on its triathlon.

All competitors survived the heat and humidity. Kudos to the park district for not falling prey to weather worries When in comes to academics, congratulations are overdue for Oregon winter and spring sports.

Every single boys and girls teams were named by the IHSA for having a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric D. Morris reports the following court activity.

Sentencings Mark T. Miller, 36, Leaf River, pleaded guilty Aug. 15 to domestic battery, a misdemeanor. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to 93 days jail to be remitted upon successful completion of 18 months probation.

Hanson also ordered him to cooperate with and satisfactorily complete the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, submit to random drug testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, and pay total fines and cots of $1,349. Two felony counts of domestic battery were dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

Ryan A. Fenton, 32, Oregon, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with one year mandatory supervised release and ordered him to pay total fines and

costs of $2,585.

Kelly A. Lee, 54, Byron, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced her to 156 days in jail (time served); 24 months probation.

OBITUARIES MARY JANE BELHA Mary Jane Belha, 81, of Oregon, peacefully died on Thursday, Aug.15, 2019 at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident for many years. Mary Jane was born April 4, 1938 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was adopted as an infant by Roy and Emma Arnold, of Sterling.

She was a 1956 graduate of Sterling

ROSALYN FAGER Rosalyn “Rosie” Fager, 93, of Forreston, died on Tuesday Aug. 13, 2019 at Generations at Neighbors in Byron.

She was born Aug. 19, 1925 in Red Oak, the daughter of Charles and Ann (LaBuddie) Hirsbrunner.

She was a 1943 graduate of Orangeville High School.

She married Gerald Fager on Oct. 13, 1946 at St. John Church in Freeport. He died on Nov. 7, 1978.

Rosie farmed the family farm along-

Newman High School and attended college in Colorado.

Mary Jane married Carl Belha on Jan. 3, 1959 in Sterling; he died on Nov. 24, 2017.

Together they farmed in Lyndon before finally settling in Oregon in 1962.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon.

She is survived by her brother, William Arnold, of Sterling, and eight nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and infant daughter, Christine Marie.

Christian funeral mass was held on Aug. 20 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon with Rev.

Joseph Naill as celebrant.

Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Unity Hospice of Rochelle.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Allen; grandson Jake Charles; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen (Ida) Hirsbrunner and Charles (Helen)

Hirsbrunner; and special friend, Gene.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 17 at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston with Rev. Scott Ralston officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston.

ETHAN R. THOMAS Ethan Robert Thomas, 35, of Oregon and formerly of Chana, a son any mom and dad would be proud of, died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 from injuries suffered in a work place accident.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1983 in Rockford, the son of Howard “Duke” and Mindy (Mearns) Thomas. His ancestors came to America on the Mayflower.

Lynn married George “Bill” Martin on June 16, 2016 in Oregon.

She worked as a title searcher in real estate for Rockford Title Company and Northwest Title Company for many years.

She was an avid gardener, loved mowing her lawn, crocheted many items for all new baby arrivals, loved four-wheeling, and spend-

ing the winters in Arizona.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Bill Martin, Oregon; two sons, Darryl Ehnen, Oregon, and Steven Ehnen, Dixon; a grandson, Devin Ehnen, Lawrence, Kansas, a great-grandson; two sisters: Iris O’Hare (Bernard) Empen, Forreston, and Beryl Blumeyer, Oregon.

He once entered a 72-ounce steak eating contest in Amarillo, Texas, which was broadcast live and just missed completing the challenge.

Although not a church goer, he was a Christian.

An all around good guy, Ethan was always there to lend a hand to anyone that needed help and will surely be missed.

He had the absolute greatest and most giving heart.

Survived by his parents, Duke and Mindy Thomas, of Chana; brothers, Ryan Thomas, of Oregon, Garrett Thomas, of Oregon, and Jordan (Tabitha) Thomas, of Mt. Morris; niece, Ainsley Thomas, of Mt. Morris; grandparents, Marvin and Juanita Miller, of Mt. Morris; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert Mearns and Howard and Marie Thomas; uncle, Matt Mearns; uncles, Wayne Thomas, Robert Thomas, and Roger Fisher; aunt, Nancy Greenfield; and cousin, Matt Thomas.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 22 at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, with Pastor David Rogula officiating.

Burial was at Daysville Cemetery.
