1965 GTO will compete for grand prize at SEMA show Nov. 5-8 BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A German Valley man’s college auto class project may soon become a legend. Steve Zettle’s 1965 Pontiac GTO is one of 18 finalists in the 2019 Hot Wheels Legends Tour. The shiny red muscle car was chosen last month as the winner of the Chicago car show that one of 18 stops on this year’s tour. The overall winner will be selected in November, and that car will be replicated into one of the miniature cars Hot Wheels is known for. Zettle said he didn’t expect to be the winner when he attended the show July 13 with family members and friends. “We were all floored,” he said. “There were a lot of nice cars there.” His car was one of 350 entered in the competition, and all entries are by Hot Wheels’ invitation only after an application process. Zettle, 37, bought the car in 2002 when he was a student at Highland Community College, Freeport. “The guy I bought it from was going to scrap it,” he said. He worked on restoring the vehicle for two years, doing the body and

Photo by Vinde Wells paint work in class, and rebuilding the motor and transmission with the help of a friend of his father. Another friend hand-painted all the lettering on the car. The car has not had a sheltered existence — Zettle said he frequently takes it to local shows and cruise nights. “I drive it everywhere, as long as it’s not more than 25 or 30 miles. The motor likes a lot of fuel,” he said with a grin. “I used to drive it to work every day.” He works at Bowman Electric, Polo. The judges on the Legends Tour are looking for cars that were built by the owner.

“Kind of the ‘garage-build’ I guess your would call it,” Zettle said. The tour’s website bears that out, saying that finalist at each of the 18 shows are selected “based on the criteria of authenticity, creativity, and garage spirit.” Zettle said he has loved cars ever since he was a youngster. “I listened to my dad and his buddies talk about their old cars and how they wished they had them back,” he said. The Legends Tour began in March with a show in Miami, Florida. Other shows have already been held in Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Bentonville, Charlotte, Philadelphia, New York City, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, and Denver. Yet to go are shows in Seattle, Phoenix, San Jose, and San Diego, wrapping up in Los Angeles on Oct. 19. A special stop on the tour on May 15 celebrated Hot Wheels’ 51st anniversary at it headquarters in El Segundo, California. Zettle, along with the other 17 finalists, each win a trip to the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas Nov. 5-8 where judges will line them up side-by-side and choose the grand prize winner. The car chosen will be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends, “a collection of one-of-a-kind cars that embody the brand’s challenger spirit and legendary design,” according to the website. Hot Wheels held it first Legends Tour in 2018, looking for custom automotive builders across the country.

Forreston to host BBQ competition Community invited to vote for favorite BBQ Forreston will host a barbecue competition this weekend aimed at assisting military veterans. Hank Ritts, co-founder and vice president of Mission Zero Hundred Hours, based in Oswego, told the village board Aug. 6 that his organization will hold a Saluting with Smoke training exercise

on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Memorial Park. He said the goal of the event is to place at-risk veterans with each of five teams, who will each cook five racks of ribs and three pork butts at the competition. The teams will arrive the day before and barbecuing will begin early Saturday morning. The public is invited to judge the results from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at a cost of $10 for 10 tickets. Tickets will be available at the village hall and at the event. The mission of MZHH, a not-for-profit agency, is to reduce the suicide rate of

veterans by providing those at risk with culinary arts programs, jobs placement, competition barbecue cooking team excursions, and culinary business related services and support. Ritts told the board that an estimated 20 veterans commit suicide every day. “We feel this number should be zero,” he said. “Mission Zero Hundred Hours is the start of a new day for at-risk vets.” Proceeds of the competition will be split evenly between the village, the Forreston American Legion Post, and MZHH.

From an early bird getting his worm to a giant rocking horse, 10 new sculptures arrived at the downtown Mt. Morris campus Aug. 9 for the fourth annual U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition. Fine Art in Straw sculptures will be on display for all to enjoy every day through Sunday, Aug. 25. Car show brings crowd to Polo Bright blue cloudless skies on Saturday brought out vintage car owners and enthusiasts to the Polo Chamber of Commerce’s 30th annual car show. Shiny vehicles from over the decades lined both sides of the street for three blocks of Mason Street in the downtown while music from the 50s and 60s played. Food and craft vendors also offered their wares to round out the event.

KRAUT RUN RESULTS Thirty-five participate in second annual Kraut Run The second annual Kraut Run on Aug. 3 during Forreston Sauerkraut Days drew 35 runners and walkers. Ten of those runners participated in the kids one-mile fun run. Participants were Olivia Beal, Ryleigh Alexander, Ericka Alexander, Eshah Slick, Henry Warren, Kallen Langley, Parker Brown, Sawyer Spence, Harper Thibodeau, and Benjamin Whitehead. Top runners in the 5 and under Benjamin Whitehead and Harper Thibodeau.

Top runners in the 6-12 group were Henry Warren and Ericka Alexander. The 5K had 25 runners and wakers. Top runners were Emma Nelson and Micah Nelson (13-19 years old), Austin Howald (20-30), Darcy Spence and Scott Brown (31-40), Jennifer Nelson and Shawn Nelson (41-50), and Janet Tomita and Tom Lichty (51-60). The top three overall were Micah Nelson, first; Shawn Nelson, second; and Tim Lichty, third. “Congratulations to all the runners,” said Renee Ludwig, Sauerkraut Days Committee member.

Polo officials are once again fundraising to update facilities at the city’s swimming pool. Park Board President Larry Loomis said last week that the pool’s concession stand must be torn down because it did not pass a recent inspection. In a press release Aug. 8, Loomis said inspectors from the Ogle County Health Department found that the building falls short of federal, state, and county requirements, and it needs commercial refrigeration and preparation equipment as well as diaper-changing stations, electric hand dryers, and soap dispensers in the restrooms, in addition to other improvements. While the concession stand can remain open for the remainder of this year, Loomis said, it will not be allowed to open in 2020 without the changes being made. The facility must be razed and a new one built by next year to meet the requirements, he said. The park board and city council have formed a committee to raise the estimated $30,000 to $35,000 needed to build and equip a new 26-foot square concession stand. The Polo Lions Club has already come through with a donation of labor and $7,000 to begin the fundraising project. Donations can be made to an account at the First State Bank, and there will be a 50-50 raffle fundraiser with a drawing Dec. 7 during the annual Winter Carnival. The city pool opened in 1968 after months of fundraising efforts. The Town and Country Days festival was founded specifically to raise money for the project. The community again came through in 2013, donating $75,000 to replace the aging bathhouse. “It is hoped that between donations and the fundraiser that enough money will be raised so that a new facility will be able to be built by next year,” Loomis said. “Unfortunately if not, then there will be no concessions or restroom facilities outside of what is in the pool area until the new building can be built, equipped and paid for.” To further complicate the situation, the same updates are needed

At the request of Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow, a warrant for his arrest was then issued with bond set at $500,000. The charges stem from an investigation

Ogle County detectives began last March. Morrow said both victims, who were acquainted with Upchurch, were younger than 13 when the incidents took place. The incidents with one of the victims occurred between 2004 and 2008 and between 2005 and 2008 with the other, he said. Upchurch was arrest-

ed Aug. 8 and appeared in court later that day before Judge John C. Redington. The case was continued to Aug. 9 when Roe granted a motion from Upchurch’s attorney Russell Crull, of Rochelle, to reduce the bond to $250,000, over the objections of Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Schuman. Upchurch was released from the Ogle County Jail Aug. 9 after he posted bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26.

lic outdoor swimming pools in the area. People from surrounding communities including Forreston, Dixon, Sterling, and Milledgeville regularly drive there to swim. The pool also offers swimming lessons.

Bolen and Storz to speak at GV museum on Aug. 25

The Rock River Valley Barbershop Chorus will perform on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. at Prairie Dell Church, 16032 W. Coffman Rd., Shannon. A free will offering will be collected and fellowship will follow. Rock River Valley Barbershop Chorus is the Sterling-Rock Falls chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The German Valley Historical Museum, 805 Church St., will be open on Sunday, Aug. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. Featured speakers at 1 p.m. will be former teachers Sheila Bolen and Cindy Storz, who will speak on “Settler Sayings and the Old Schoolhouse.” They will discuss sayings, still in use today, the origins of which go back to various trades such as blacksmithing and other areas of life. READING MATTERS

Parents and grandparents can help develop reading skills Early learning has changed. It used to be that first grade was the year in which students learned to read. Today, many important pre-reading skills are practiced in preschool, and kindergarteners are expected to learn to read. This month a new group of young children will be entering kindergarten. Let’s look at some important skills that build the foundation for learning to read and how parents and grandparents can support the learning of those skills. Preschoolers are learning about the sounds of language. Learning to recognize and to create rhymes is a big part of this. We can encourage these skills by singing children’s songs, reciting nursery rhymes and poems, and reading books full of rhymes. Dr. Seuss books are perfect. The Barb City Stompers will return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree for a free two-hour concert on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris. The band was formed in 2004, but the pedigree of some of the players goes back well beyond that date. Clarinetist John Skillman has been a member of the Buck Creek Jazz Band for 31 years, for example, while Roy Rubinstein has offset his career as a physicist with more than 50 years of trombone playing. In fact, with the exception of drummer Aaron Puckett, the whole band has pursued careers outside of music. “Maybe it’s that factor that makes their music a product of love and devotion, said Jamboree organizer Larry Ubben. “There’s no doubting that they know their stuff nor that they have something personal to say. That’s no mean feat given the age of a lot of the material here.” As a soloist, Rubinstein simply oozes character and the fact that the group has no cornet/trumpet lead affords both he and Skillman space to do their own things, Ubben said. DeKalb is where barbed wire was invented and so, the unusual name

Serenity Hospice and Home will hold an eight-week class, “Understanding Your Grief,” beginning next month. The class will be held every Tuesday from Sept. 8 through Oct. 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at The Serenity Shed, 131 N. Third St., Oregon. “The group was ‘our’ group, not one that outsiders could drop into. It felt very safe for me and I trusted these people with my feelings,” said a recent participant. “If I wanted to share I could without fear of judgment. I was comfortable being with this group. I was not alone in my grief.” The structure of the group will follow the book by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt which covers 10 touchstones in the areas of physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual growth to help participants through the grief process. Wolfelt has written many books about healing after the loss of a loved one and is considered a leading grief educator. The class will be facilitated by Cathy Warren, who is Serenity Hospice’s Bereavement Coordinator. “I am very excited to offer a class like this one,” said Warren. “Our grief groups are usually open-ended and people come and go as they travel through their own journey of grief. This is a more structured approach and the participant will know exactly when it will end.” Each participant will receive a copy of the book by Dr. Wolfelt. Good Samaritan goes out of his way to help Dear Editor, In today’s fast paced world it is good to know there are still a few Good Samaritans among us. A few days ago I had the misfortune of having my car break down on Illinois 2 between Grand Detour and Oregon. My good fortune was that I landed adjacent to Doug Strawser’s rural residence.

After many dozens of cars drove by without so much as a glance, Doug was backing out of his driveway when he observed my plight. His offer to help turned into several hours of driving me around to arrange a tow truck and a repair shop. The 13th annual Farm Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 at East Jordan Church, 22027 Polo Rd, Sterling. The admission and parking are free. The day will start with a good ol’ fashioned farm breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy served from 7 to 9 a.m. Tickets for breakfast are $8 for adults, $4 for youth to age 13, free for anyone under age 5. Breakfast tickets are available from church members before the event or at the door. The active farm machine demonstrations will begin around 9 a.m. and will occur periodically until 3:30 p.m. Static displays will be available all day. This year’s active displays will feature a threshing machine, a stationary baler, wagon lifts and elevators, an ensilage cutter, a corn husker and shredder and tractor operations. A blacksmith will demonstrate some tool-making and craft. An activity center will allow kids, youth and adults to try their hand at powering hand-cranked items such as corn sheller or a rope-maker. A bouncy house for children is new this year. A farm animal zoo will again feature dairy cows, sheep, goats and more. This is definitely a fun zone for children, youth, and adults of all ages. A lunch stand will run inside the air-conditioned church from 11:30

Tough going for the Ganymedes at world tourney Local team goes 0-3 for first time in years BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com The weather was perfect and the venue was spot on. but unfortunately, the Oregon Ganymedeâ€™s were off their gameâ€”three to be exactâ€” at the 17th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball. â€œWe had some 2-out errors that really hurt us in every game,â€? said Captain Mark Herman on Sunday. The Ganymedes were one of 12 vintage base ball teams who played on the Walnut Grove fields at the Henry Ford Museumâ€™s Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan on Aug. 10 and 11. The Oregon-based team was competitive, but winless against three competitors: the Saginaw Old Golds, the Black Flags of Drovertown, and the Lah-De-Dahs. They fell to the Saginaw Old Golds of Saginaw, Michigan in their first match of the day 21-8. and two hours later, to the Black Flags of Drovertown, Huntington, Indiana, 17-12 after jumping out to a big lead only to fall in the later innings. Early Sunday morning, the team lost to the Lah-De-Dahs 14-12. â€œWe had many great plays, but too many errors,â€? Herman said. â€œSaturday was also an upset day for nearly all the previous tournament favorites as they were defeated one by one by several new clubs to the tournament.â€? New preserve will be located just south of Grand Detour A local conservation agency has purchased more than 90 acres just outside of Ogle County for restoration and preservation. Middle Rock Conservation Partners, a not-forprofit agency founded in 2017, bought the parcel on July 31 and has named it the Samuel and Edna Hill Preservation Site. The property is along Illinois 2 just south of the bridge over the Rock River at Grand Detour and contains more than 70 acres of oak and hickory woodlands and savanna. The purchase was made possible by a $466,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and private donations. The Illinois Clean Energy Community Founda-

tion was established in December 1999 as an independent foundation with a $225 million endowment provided by Commonwealth Edison. Its mission is to improve energy efficiency, advance the development and use of renewable energy resources, and protect natural areas and

wildlife habitat in communities across Illinois. To date, the foundation has helped nonprofits and local governments purchase a total of 28,000plus acres of land through its Natural Areas grant program. “In considering the grant request, the foundation was impressed by the work of the Middle Rock Conservation Partners to develop a solid protection plan for this parcel and to raise additional private dollars to see it through,” said Dennis O’Brien, Executive Director of Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. “We are pleased to help create a brand-new preserve for the public to enjoy and feel confident that the important natural resources of the site are in good hands.” The Samuel and Edna Hill Preservation Site which will ultimately be open to the community for hiking, birding, and passive recreation.

time as long as there aren’t any outhouses.” Krug, a Chicago Cubs baseball fan, said his grandfather played for the Dixon Merchants in 1909. “They had a 26-inning game against Muscatine, Iowa and he pitched the whole game,” Krug said. “The White Sox tried to sign him, but he already had half-a-dozen kids. His name was Silent Bob Woodyatt.” Krug said he enjoyed watching his son play. “I played fastpitch and slo-pitch softball in Oregon in the 1970s,” he said. “When they got this started I was just a little too old.” Last year, the Ganymedes won the 3rd Class Division, and earned an automatic bid to this year’s tourna-

ment. Herman said the team would now be in a lottery with four other teams to see who would be invited back in 2020. “The competition was really good this year,” Herman said. “This is the first time in 5 years that we didn’t win at least 2 games.” The Ganymedes did win the “Furthest Traveled Award” in honor of being the team who was located the furthest from Greenfield Village, (373 miles from Dearborn, Michigan). They also received a “Bag of Peanuts Award” for not winning a game. The Indianapolis Blues also didn’t win a game so they got a bag of peanuts too. The Ganymedes’ oldest player,

This is the third year in a row that we have received the furthest traveled award.” The Canton Cornhuckers from Clinton. Michigan won the 1st Class Division beating the Flat Rock Bear Clan of Detroit 14-9 in the championship. The Saginaw Old Golds won the 2nd Class Division and the La-DeeDahs won the 3rd Class Division.

• NEW PRESERVE Continued from Page 15 This land along the Rock River in Lee County contains ancient bur oak trees and woodland plants that provide needed habitat for declining species of birds and insects. Travelers along Illinois 2, north of Dixon, near Grand Detour will notice changes in the coming months. A small parking lot is planned for the entrance along Illinois 2. Initially the parking lot will provide access to Middle Rock Conservation Partners members so that they may begin stewardship at the site. This will include removing invasive species, clearing non-native trees, and cutting-in fire breaks that will allow prescribed fire on the site for management purposes. Regular burning keeps the brush in check and is critical to maintaining healthy prairie and woodland habitat. Ultimately, the entrance will be available to the public. Look for the signs directing you to the Samuel and Edna Hill Preservation Site. Located along the Rock River habitat corridor, the site is home to many plants and animals, including a large diversity of birds. Middle Rock Conservation Partners will identify bird species pres-

ent at the site both now and as restoration progresses. This kind of management should significantly increase the number of bird species and their abundance. Middle Rock Conservation Partners is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization comprised of individuals who are committed to protecting and stewarding habitat for species in the greatest need of conservation. Although Middle Rock Conservation Partners is a relatively new organization, established in 2017, it has already raised donations from the National Wild Turkey Federation and individuals to purchase prescribed fire equipment and a trailer to haul the equipment. Since 2018 Middle Rock Conservation Partners has helped with natural areas stewardship at various sites in the area and will continue working to help maintain natural areas in Lee and Ogle counties. Volunteers are needed for monthly workdays, prescribed burns, fundraising, grant writing, and for spreading the word about the work. Training and equipment for all activities is provided. Grand Jury The Ogle County Grand Jury indicted Duane Upchurch, 54, of Byron, Aug. 6 on four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The grand jury indicted Payton Janssen, 21, of Iowa, on Aug. 6 on two counts of criminal sexual assault. At the request of the Ogle County State’s Attorney, an arrest warrant with bond in the amount of $100,000 was issued. Janssen was arrested Aug. 9 and appeared in court later that day when the bond was reduced to $50,000 over the state’s attorney’s objections. A status hearing was set for Aug. 13.

Aug. 10 At 12:21 a.m., police took one 17-yearold male juvenile from Iowa, and one 16-year-old male juvenile from Iowa, into limited custody for possessing vape devices, violating the curfew ordinance, and violating the park district ordinance of being in a park after closing hours. The vape devices were confiscated, and the juveniles were transported and released into a guardian’s custody.
