Perfect weather makes for large turnout Sauerkraut Days lunch sells out early again

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Last year it was the sauerkraut that was devoured first. This year it was the bratwurst.

“I’m sorry but we are sold out,” Harold Wiggins told nearly 25 people still in line for the Forreston Sauerkraut Days’ popular sauerkraut lunch on Saturday. “All we have left is pop, some saukerkraut, and chips.”

Wiggins, the commander of the Forreston American Legion, said organizers had more food this year than in 2018 when they had to send someone to Freeport to get more of that German delicacy - sauerkraut.

“We planned on selling until 3 p.m., but we had a great turn-out so we ran out,” Wiggins said at 1:04 p.m.. “We got more than we did last year and we went through 20 big cans of sauerkraut.”

Although final attendance numbers were not yet available Monday, organizers of the two-day festival were definitely pleased with the turn-out and overall successful of the annual event.

Saturday events included water fights courtesy of the Forreston Fire Department, a craft fair, a hula-hoop contest, dunk tank, and watermelon eating contest.

Brennan Byers, 9, Cadan Hoffman, 11, and Gavin Hoffman, 8, all of Forreston, were just three of a crowd of kids who lined up along the rails of the water fight area to take advantage of the cool spray of water as area firefighters battled for a trophy in the double-elimination event.

“We are getting soaked,” said Byers smiling.

The boys tried drying off in between contests by laying on the hot asphalt by one of the fire trucks.

Organizers thanked Mother Nature for shining on this year’s event.

“It was fantastic! It’s all very dependent upon the weather, and Mother Nature provided a great weekend,” said Jane Koeller, one of the organizers. “All events were well-attended and surpassed expectations. It was great to see so many people in town having a great time.”

More teams signed up for 3 on 3 basketball, more vendors showed up, and the beer garden hosted more than 500 people, she said.

“Our inaugural parade on Sunday was well-received and well-attended,” Koeller said. “It was about a half-hour long and we had 50 entries.”

The fourth annual U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition opens Friday, Aug. 9 on the Mt. Morris Campus.

Fine Art in Straw sculptures will be on display for all to enjoy each day through Sunday, Aug. 25.

Forreston will host a barbecue competition next weekend aimed at assisting military veterans.

Hank Ritts, co-founder and vice president of Mission Zero Hundred Hours, based in Oswego, told the village board Tuesday evening that his organization will hold a training exercise for Salut-

ing with Smoke on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Memorial Park.

The mission of MZHH, a not-forprofit agency, is to reduce the suicide rate of veterans by providing those at risk with culinary arts programs, jobs placement, competition barbecue cooking team excursions, and culinary

business related services and support.

Five teams will cook at the competition and the public is invited to judge the results from 12:30 to 2 p.m. as a cost of $10 for 10 tickets.

Proceeds will be split evenly between the village, the Forreston American Legion Post, and MZHH.

Moring may discontinue recycling services Company official says cost is too high

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Recycling may soon be a thing of the past for Polo residents and businesses as well as other Ogle County communities.

Steve Moring, of Moring Disposal Inc., of Forreston, told the Polo City Council Monday evening that weekly pick-up of recyclables, along with the large roll-off bins at the corner of

Locust Street and Division Avenue, may be discontinued because of the cost.

“Recyclables aren’t worth anything anymore,” he said, explaining that Morings now must pay another company to take the recyclable items they collect, something that used to be free.

Those companies, he said, are also having difficulty finding a market for recyclables.

In addition, he said, his company also incurs the expense of hauling the recyclables to Whitewater, Wisconsin.

“I think these people who want to

go green need to do something about it,” he said.

Moring Disposal Inc., has curbside garbage collection contracts with the Cities of Polo and Oregon, and collects garbage in numerous other local communities including Forreston, Leaf River, and German Valley.

Moring said recyclables lost value several months ago when China announced they would no longer take them from the U.S. His visit to the city council came after he sent them a letter asking for a rate increase as of Sept. 1.

He told the council that firm offi-

cials are also contacting other cities and villages to discuss the end of recycling.

Their plan is to put recyclable items with the regular garbage.

Alderman Randy Schoon said he is in favor of that.

“If it’s not working, let’s not do it anymore,” he said.

Alderman Troy Boothe disagreed.

“It shouldn’t be all about money,” he said. “I’m afraid we’re all going to end up living on top of a garbage dump.”

The council agreed to meet with Moring officials to discuss recycling and garbage rates.

Two Mt. Morris homes were damaged and a garage was destroyed July 30 in an afternoon blaze that started when a snowmobile caught fire.

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough said the fire at 203 and 205 W. Hitt St. has been ruled accidental. The Illinois State Fire Marshal assisted with the investigation.

Hough said Brandon Taylor, who lives at 205 W. Hitt St., was working inside the garage on a newly acquired snowmobile when it caught fire.

The flames quickly spread to his home, which is owned by Matt Merrill, and to the nearby home of Alice Cross at 203 W. Hitt St. The fire was reported at 4:08 p.m. and firefighters arrived on the scene

less than five minutes later to find the garage totally ablaze and live electrical wires on the ground.

“The fire had extended to a vehicle in the driveway and both the residence at 205 as well as the neighboring residence at 203, which is in close proximity to the garage,” Hough said. “We were faced with additional tactical challenges as the incoming overhead electrical service to both residences had burned through and had dropped across Hitt Street. Those lines were still hot and actively arcing, limiting apparatus placement and hose line deployments initially.”

Hitt Street (Illinois 64) was closed to traffic from Wesley Avenue to Reynolds Avenue for several hours.

Both houses are uninhabitable, Hough said, and two vehicles, one on the garage and one in the driveway, also sustained heavy damage.

Weather and rides brought large crowd to fair Demolition derby drew 1,500 people

By Monday morning, the 166th Ogle County Fair was a pleasant memory — for all but a few.

Fair board president Harlan Holm was one of around 20 faithful volunteers who were still at the now-deserted fairgrounds wrapping things up for another year.

“We’ve got a good crew out here and we don’t have a lot more to do,” he said shortly after noon.

The group spent the morning cleaning barns, picking up garbage, and putting away gates and other equipment until next year.

Holm expressed satisfaction with the five-day event.

“The fair went great,” he said.

“It almost had to — we had perfect weather.”

Mother Nature certainly did her best — skies were blue, temperatures ranged from the high 70s to mid 80s, and the humidity stayed low for the entire event which ran from July 31 through Aug. 4.

Although Holm did not yet have the final tallies about how many people came, it was clear from the gate receipts that attendance was up from last year when an estimated 18,500 turned out.

“The income at the gate was higher every day than last year,” he said.

He attributed part of that to the unlimited carnival rides included in the $8 per person gate admission, something the fair has offered for several years.

“We had more calls than usual this year from people who live outside the county asking about the free rides,” Holm said. “It’s catching on.

We’re trying to keep our fair priced so a family can come and have a great time. We want them to still have smiles on their faces when they leave.”

Another well-attended event was the Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean, a free ground show featuring high wire acts and sword fights 25

feet in the air.

“We’ve had a lot of positive comments on the pirate show,” Holm said.

The fair began with a queen contest on Wednesday and included tractor pulls on Wednesday and Thurs-

day, a rodeo on Friday, as well as the 4-H show, open and junior shows, and exhibits.

“The 4-H kids are great,” Holm said. “They work hard and walk around the grounds smiling. It’s all about the kids — that’s why we do it.”

A Davis Junction man pleaded not guilty in Ogle County Court last week to embezzling several thousand dollars from the Oregon VFW Post while he was its commander.

Rusty Barnes, 48, also demanded a jury trial at a preliminary hearing July 31 before Judge John B. Roe. Barnes faces seven counts of felony theft for incidents that occurred

from June 20, 2016 to Jan. 18, 2018.

He has been charged with five counts of theft of between $500 and $10,000, Class 3 felonies, and two counts of theft of between $10,000 and $100,000, Class 2 felonies.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said the investigation indicates that Barnes took from $10,000 to $100,000 from the post during his

time as its commander.

Barnes became post commander in June of 2016 and resigned the following January.

He was arrested on June 27, and his bond was originally set at $10,000.

During a court appearance June 28, Roe released Barnes on a recognizance bond. A pretrial conference is set for Sept. 23.

Recycle paint, oil, and antifreeze on Aug. 17 The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department will hold a recycling event for household latex paint and used oil and antifreeze on Saturday, Aug.17 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Pines Road Annex, 909 Pines Rd., Oregon.

This event is for Ogle County residents only.

Illinois Recovery Group will be on hand with their vacuum truck to collect used motor oil and antifreeze. Used oil filters will also be accepted for recycling.

Residents can bring up to 200

gallons of used oil to the event.

For quantities greater than 200 gallons call the OCSWMD for more information.

Small containers as well as oil drums may be brought to the event.

Oil containers will be returned for either re-use or proper disposal. No mixed automotive fluids, cooking oil, fuel, tires, or other household hazardous waste will be accepted.

Latex paint will also be collected for recycling through e-Paint.

Residents may bring up to 20 containers of liquid latex paint in for recycling.

Residents will be charged $1 per gallon container, quart-sized containers are $1 for 1 to 2 containers, $2 for 3 to 4 containers, and $5 for five gallon containers of paint.

The remainder of the cost to recycle the paint will be subsidized by the OCSWMD. Residents may bring more than 20 containers, but will pay the full price for additional containers over 20.

Dried up or hardened paint will not be accepted, only liquid latex paint.

No oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, paint thinners, or other household hazardous waste will be accepted. Paint must be in original containers.

This event is for residential materials. No business or contractor materials will be accepted.

Students took part in EMSA program at Kish College

Kishwaukee College’s Engineering, Math & Science Academy (EMSA) welcomed 27 local high school students into the program this summer, making it the largest class since 2016.

The 2019-2020 EMSA class consists of students from DeKalb High School, Genoa-Kingston High School, Sycamore High School and Oregon High School.

The unique program offers high school students an early start on their college careers by taking college-level courses during junior or senior year.

Students can earn up to 23 credit hours through the EMSA program, generally transferable to 4-year public universities. EMSA students have transferred to some of the top engineering schools in the country, including the University of Illinois, Purdue, Georgia Tech and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“EMSA is a great opportunity for highly motivated students that are looking to get a head start on college,” said EMSA advisor and assistant professor of physics & engineering Alan Edgecombe. “Kish offers small class sizes and a great

Students have the option to follow one of two tracks during their year in the EMSA program.

“When we began EMSA over 10 years ago, the program was geared

towards students entering the engineering and physics fields,” said Dean of Instruction Kyra Rider. “We soon saw a demand for a track that emphasized science-based professions such as pre-med, pre-veterinary and physical therapy, so we

responded with the development of the pre-professional track.”

The 27 high school students completed Calculus I this summer and will progress on their chosen track in the fall.

The six pre-professional track students will take Biology and Chemistry whereas the other 21 students will enter the engineering track and take Calculus II and Physics.

“Parent feedback has been very positive. We are happy to provide this opportunity for high school students to receive dual credit that satisfies their high school requirement and earns them college credit,” Edgecombe said.

EMSA is open to any high school student who has completed pre-Calculus and Chemistry with a “B” grade or better, whether entering their junior or senior year of high school.

Application materials must be received by the college no later than Jan. 31 of the year in which the student plans to begin.

CTA to perform at Aug. 16 Mt. Morris Jamboree Chicago Tribute Anthology will make its debut appearance at the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, Aug. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

In April of 1969, a new rock ‘n roll band burst onto the scene, garnering nationwide attention.

Born in the Midwest and infused with elements of jazz, blues, and Latin influences, the first album by “Chicago Transit Authority”, or CTA as they were commonly known, went double platinum.

Such hits as Beginnings, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?, and Question 67 & 68 propelled the band to popularity.

With a rock rhythm section led by guitarist Terry Kath, a powerful horn section, and unique vocals, the band now known simply as “Chicago” released their second album in January of 1970.

Considered by many to be the band’s breakout album, Chicago 2 would also go platinum with hits like: Make Me Smile; Colour My World; and 25 or 6 to 4.

Chicago became a dominant force in popular music during the 1970s, producing at least one new album each year.

This period was marked by the release of classic songs like, Free, Saturday in the Park, Dialogue, Just You ‘n Me, Feelin’ Stronger Every Day, Call On Me, and Old Days, to name a few.

The 13th annual Farm Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 at East Jordan Church, 22027 Polo Rd, Sterling.

The admission and parking are free.

The day will start with a good ol’ fashioned farm breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy served from 7 to 9 a.m.

Tickets for breakfast are $8 for adults, $4 for youth to age 13, free for anyone under age 5.

Breakfast tickets are available from church members before the event or at the door.

The active farm machine demonstrations will begin around 9 a.m. and will occur periodically until 3:30 p.m. Static displays will be available all day.

This year’s active displays will feature a threshing machine, a stationary baler, wagon lifts and elevators, an ensilage cutter, a corn husker and shredder and tractor operations.

A blacksmith will demonstrate some tool-making and craft.

An activity center will allow

kids, youth and adults to try their hand at powering hand-cranked items such as corn sheller or a rope-maker.

A bouncy house for children is new this year.

A farm animal zoo will again feature dairy cows, sheep, goats and more. This is definitely a fun zone for children, youth, and adults of all ages.

A lunch stand will run inside the air-conditioned church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. featuring sandwiches, baked beans, salads, chips, and desserts.

Proceeds from the lunch benefit various missions and functions of the East Jordan Church.

As an attendee from a previous year’s shows said, “This is different than most tractor shows in the area. They have live demonstrations of older farm machinery and practices of years ago.

This is definitely worth letting your family experience.”

And, better yet, there’s still time to join the parade!

The theme for this year’s parade is “A Salute to the Black Hawk Statue”.

“We chose this theme for this year’s festival in hopes that the Black Hawk Statue restoration would be completed, ” said Marseyne Snow, chairman of the parade and president of AOP. “It’s always interesting and fun to see how people get creative with the theme.

“Please get your entries in early so we can finish the parade line-up. The deadline is in Sept. 15. If the line-up fills prior to Sept. 15 no more entries will be accepted,” Snow said.

In addition to local entries, the ever-popular South Shore Drill Team and the Jesse White Tumblers have been booked for this year’s parade.

A post parade show by the crowd pleasing South Shore Drill Team is also offered again this year on Jefferson Street in front of the Oregon library.

Deputies responded at 6:20 p.m. to a motorcycle accident in the 5,000 block of West Illinois 64.

James Blasz, 75, and his passenger Carol Blasz, 71, both of Miles, Iowa, were eastbound when they veered off of the roadway and into the ditch.

The motorcycle overturned and both riders were ejected.

Both were transported by Mt. Morris EMS and Polo EMS to KSB Hospital, Dixon, were they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

July 31 Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash at 4:43 p.m. at the intersection of Leaf River and Mud Creek Roads.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE Illinois State Police in District 1 investigated two traffic crash fatalities in July, according to a report released by Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon.

State troopers issued 439 citations, 444 written warnings, and made 15 criminal arrests during the month in the district, which includes Ogle, Carroll, Lee, and Whiteside Counties.

Speeding accounted for 250 citations, 46 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 31 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 19 traffic crashes, assisted 133 motorists, and conducted 114 commercial vehicle inspections, nine of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

Four arrests were made for driving under the influence.
