American Legion Centennial honored Veterans groups have long tradition in MM

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Vietnam veteran Doug Wean reminded the crowd at the Let Freedom Ring Patriotic Program July 4 of the high cost of freedom.

“When we speak of freedom, we must remember the 1.4 million Americans who have given their lives from 1776 to 2019 to allow us to share this day,” he said.

Wean, a Mt. Morris native, told the audience that 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Legion, both nationwide and locally.

By that time, however, veterans organizations were already well-established in the Mt. Morris, beginning with Lt. John M. Smith Grand Army of the Republic Post 720, founded by local Civil War veterans in 1869.

“On Jan. 2, 1863, the Rock River Rifles and our Mt. Morris boys would engage in the vicious battle at Stones River, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee,” said Wean, an American Legion Post officer.

“On that morning, Lt. John M. Smith, the son of Stephen and Lydia Smith, farmers west of Mt. Morris, was mortally wounded, leading Company H of the 34th Illinois Infantry into battle.”

“One hundred years ago last month, the American Legion and the GAR first hosted this July celebration,” Wean said.

The Mt. Morris American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts helped finance the procurement of the Illinois State Freedom Bell which has hung in the bell tower on the downtown campus since 1966.

those attending the Patriotic Program, including LFR Queen Samantha Bowers, braved the steamy but clear weather to ring the bell 13 times symbolizing the original 13 colonies.

The bell-ringing was followed by the Grand Parade, led by parade marshal Jeff Bold.

After the Kable Concert Band’s traditional patriotic concert that evening on the field at D.L. Rahn Junior High, fireworks topped off the celebration.

PUBLIC VOICE Congress should do their jobs, send needed supplies to border Dear Editor, In response to Julia B. Hammer’s letter of Friday, June 28, what is needed to help the migrant children — and the mass of people flooding through our southern border — is for Congressmen and women to get off their “hate Trump wagon” and do their jobs of supplying our border patrol people with the funds, supplies, and tools necessary so they can help these people!

How can anyone be expected to feed and put to bed 1,000 people where there is room for only 200?

(For example.)

No one is wanting to prevent immigration; they just want to be able to have people come in an orderly manner.

How would these Congress people deal with 100 people knocking on their door and demanding food and a bed where there is room for only 10?

So, Congress, where would you put the other 90?

Stop complaining and give the border patrol people the supplies they’ve requested to improve the plight of these

migrants and thus you can help them.

Your hate attitude is what perpetuates the problem.

Give it up and do your job — send the needed supplies to the border.

Museum and concert are “must see jewels”

Dear Editor, I recently had the privilege of attending a Concert on the Deck at the Byron Forest Preserve’s Jarrett Prairie Center.

Just entering the facility through the million dollar prairie history museum was a fantastic experience.

The deck , with enough elevation and a light breeze was enough to keep the bugs away (a great achievement for this year) and the panoramic views of the Rock River Valley were beyond beautiful.

Just watching the sunset was a show in itself.

Also, kudos to the musicians - the Bluegrass Reunion Band – Mike Bratt, bass, lead and harmony vocals, Stillman Valley; Steve Strombeck, fiddle, mandolin, lead and harmony vocals, South

Beloit; John Lindblade, guitar, lead and harmony vocals, Machesney Park; and Tim Lawrence, five-string banjo, lead and harmony vocals, Rock Falls.

Tim is the latest addition to the band, joining in 1992.

Needless to say, experience is at a premium with this group and it shows in the quality of their bluegrass sound.

The Jarrett Prairie Center, its Prairie History Museum, and its Concert on the Deck Series are must-see jewels on the Ogle County scene.

BRIEF Grace Valley Christian Reformed Church will host its annual corn boil on Saturday, July 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. in air-conditioned comfort at 8210 E. Edwardsville Rd., northeast of German Valley.

The menu will include corn on the cob, brats, hot dogs, chips, drinks, and desserts.

No fee will be charged for the food or evening activities, but free will donations will be accepted.

The proceeds will be used to help a local family with medical bills.

Activities will include pony rides, a bounce house, and knockerballs.

Believe In the Children, a not-forprofit organization that provides services for at-risk children, will officially open its doors with an open house on Thursday, July 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at 220 S. First Ave., Forreston.

Organizer and owner Patti Jennings said the organization, which will serve five counties, has been formed to provide services as well as support and family stabilization programs to the adults in the lives of children.

Services include parenting and fatherhood programs, supervised visitation, parenting exchanges, GED tutoring and testing, comprehensive life skills education, and creating connections.

“Partnerships with county and

state social service agencies, allows Believe In The Children to alleviate some of the challenges they face as well,” Jennings said in a press release. “Additional services and programs will be added based on the needs and demands of the communities served.”

The organization will be private-

ly and publicly funded with a board of directors and a “highly skilled professional staff,” Jennings wrote in a statement to the Forreston Village Board last year.

“The ultimate mission is to always believe in the children and put their needs first,” that statement said.

The company will work within Ogle and surrounding counties through the court system, community leaders, school districts, and provide services to social services organizations, Jennings wrote.

SSET seeks donations of school supplies for kids It’s time to get S.S.E.T. (Supplying Students Educational Tools) 4 School.

With summer quickly passing, school supplies are beginning to line the store shelves.

This not only signals the beginning of school, but also signals the annual collection of school supplies.

For most kids, this is an exciting time of new clothes and new school supplies.

For other kids, it is a time of anxiety and worrying whether they

will have the necessary supplies for school.

Every kid, not only wants, but also deserves new school supplies.

“This is the 16th year that we will make new supplies a reality for kids. This is also the 16th year that we are asking for your help,” said organizer Jane Koeller.

Collection bins will be located at the Bertolet Memorial Library in Leaf River, the German American Bank in German Valley, Koeller Forreston Hardware and the Forreston Public Library in Forres-

ton.

The supplies will be collected from Monday, July 1 through Tuesday, Aug. 6th.

All supplies are welcome, but the greatest need is for the following items: spiral notebooks, two-pocket folders, loose-leaf notebook paper, glue, colored pencils, crayons, and markers.

New and gently used backpacks will also be accepted.

The supplies will be distributed to any family, in the Forrestville Valley School District, that quali-

fies for the free or reduced lunch program.

The supplies will be distributed on Monday, Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 405 S. Fourth Ave. in Forreston, or by calling 815-266-1095.

Senior center plans trip to Museum of Science & Industry The Polo Senior Center will sponsor a day trip to the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago on Monday, Sept. 16.

The chartered bus will leave from Faith United Methodist

The trip is for adults only.

B.F. Sheets attended the Rock River Seminary

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

My personal favorite one is his home located at 100 S. Seventh St. Recently architect John McClane, of Dixon, mentioned to me the architecture and beautiful paint selection for this home built in 1904.

Benjamin Sheets was born in Wallsburg, Pennsylvania in 1832, four years before Oregon was founded.

His father was a farmer. At age 12 he moved with his parents to Kane County, Illinois.

After spending his boyhood on the farm he attended Rock River Seminary in Mt. Morris.

He attended the seminary three years and gave the valedictory address in 1855.

Classmates of his were future members of the State Legislature Senator M. Cullom and Congressman Robert R. Hitt.

The same year he graduated from the seminary he married Alice Hill.

While living in Mt. Morris he worked in the milling business and worked as a dry goods merchant until 1861.

He then moved to Oregon in 1861 where he became deputy circuit clerk for Ogle County.

In 1862 he was elected sheriff of Ogle County. In the same year, he was mustered in as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 92nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Sheets held the office of Illinois Senator representing Ogle and Winnebago Counties for two terms (1889-1893).

He was appointed by the Governor of Illinois as the first superintendent for the Illinois Reforma-

tory located at Pontiac.

Sheets was a pioneer merchant before the railroad came to Oregon.

He owned a hardware, plumbing, and heating business in downtown Oregon.

He started his business in 1869 and an article in 1907 Ogle County Republican newspaper stated the business was still going after 40 years.

Everything was hauled in on wagons mostly from Franklin Grove.

Mr. D. C. Sears ran a mule express for freight and passenger traffic.

The following was written in his diary concerning his first view of Oregon from Wooley Hill before crossing the Oregon bridge on his way to attend Mt. Morris Seminary in 1852.

“I had read and heard of Oregon City and expected to see something large and fine. As we crossed the bridge and looked at the few ugly, scattered houses, I could hardly believe that we were beholding Oregon City.

“The town had gained some notoriety, being the county-seat of a large agricultural section and as the home of Governor Ford and the place where Jonathan W. Jenkins, with 111 others had been tried and acquitted of killing the outlaws.”

Now when I see his footprint in Oregon I remember B. F. Sheets was born on a farm, attended Mt. Morris College, his description of Oregon at that time, an Illinois Senator and a very successful businessman.

ART PROJECT

Participants will learn to how to make barn quilts or signs Encore! Mt. Morris will sponsor a painting party on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. to noon or 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., depending on which size project.

This event will be held at the Disciples United Methodist Church, Mt. Morris. The church is handicapped accessible.

Karen Hilliard will teach participants how to make decorative signs or barn quilts in 16-inch square or 2-foot square sizes. No painting experience is necessary.

Those attending can choose from 12 designs.

Specify which design at registration so that materials can be prepared.

Some customization is possible, as well.

The cost is $25 to make the larger sign and $15 for the smaller one, thanks to the partial subsidizing of the fee by a grant Encore! received to help make art classes affordable to area enthusiasts.

Following the painting party, attendees can enroll in a second class in which they can create their own designs, enlarge them, and paint onto larger boards for placement on barns or other buildings.

The second class will be taught by Rachel Oliver, Encore’s artist in residence and Jeff Bold in two evenings following the first class.

Sarah Reckmeyer to conduct Kable Concert Band July 17 Sarah Reckmeyer will be the guest conductor of the Kable Concert Band on Wednesday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m. when it performs at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

The daughter of former Kable band

conductor, Warren G. Reckmeyer, Sarah was the director of bands at Ottawa High School for 27 years.

She is now retired, but continues her musical expertise as clarinetist with the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, and Illinois College Wind ensemble.

She serves as pianist and organist at her church in Ottawa.

Soloist for the week is the Kable band’s own oboist, Ben Crosby.

He is the principal oboist of the Illinois Valley Symphony orchestra.

Crosby also teaches oboe to students locally and in the LaSalle area.

He will be performing “Soliloquy and Dance” by Phillip Parker with the Kable Band.

Kable Band concerts are held every Wednesday evening in June and July.

Oregon Chamber to host two workshops in July The Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce will host two workshops this month.

The first meeting is for businesses in the wedding industry on Wednesday, July 17 at 4 p.m. at Sledgehammer’s, 1450 Illinois 2, Oregon.

Topics covered include everything from reception venues, flowers, catering, bar service, photography, and rentals.

“We’d like to gather everyone from the Oregon area together to join forces on making our area a “one stop shop for weddings,” said chamber executive director Liz Vos. The meeting is open to chamber members and non-members and will be the only meeting for this focus group.

The next focus group will be “Critical Things You Need to Know to Keep Your Organization on the Right Side of the Law” on Wednesday, July 24 from 3 to 6 p.m. at NIU’s Lorado Taft Field Campus, 1414 N. River Rd., Oregon.

“Whether you are a mom and pop business owner or lead a global organization, there are critical things every business leader, business owner, manager, and supervisor needs to know to protect your business and organization,” Vos said. “This interactive workshop will make you stop and think about things that can get your organization in legal trouble.”

John Newton, a human resources and learning and development professional, will conduct the workshop.

Topics covered include: Hiring the Right Way – Matching employees to the needs of your organization, recruitment strategies, what you can and can not ask in an employee interview, and on-boarding new employees; Requirements for Documentation and Compliance of Employee Records - I-9 compliance and records retention, employee classifications, Fair Labor Standards Act, and key legislation related to employment practices; Protecting Your Organization’s Assets: People, Places, Products unlawful employment practices,

emergency response strategy, risk strategies for managing difficult employees, customers, and termination without litigation.

After the interactive workshop, dinner and networking will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ticket prices are $40 for chamber members and $50 for non-members.

The cost of dinner is included in the admission fee, and a cash bar will be available.

The workshop is a collaborative effort by the Ogle County Chamber Coalition. Participating chambers are: Oregon, Byron, Rochelle, and Polo.

Scholarships are awarded each consecutive semester the student is enrolled full-time for up to four semesters. The scholarship offers $100 for the first semester, $200 for the second semester, $300 for the third semester, and $400 for the fourth semester for a max total of $1,000.

Oregon High School seniors Hannah Donaldson and Phillip Connor Young are the 2019 recipients of the Oregon Woman’s Club annual scholarships.

The two $750 awards will go to the winners’ chosen colleges, universities, vocational or technical schools.

Imperial Flames to perform at Jamboree July 19 Chicago Blues veteran Dave Weld and his band the Imperial Flames will return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree stage on Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m.

The free weekly concerts are held at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

Weld, born in Chicago, was first influenced as a child when he found an old Victrola in the basement and wore out the blues 78s.

He moved to New Mexico, and studied guitar under Kurt Black, a jazz player who worked with Benny Carter in New York. He also met and jammed with Gatemouth Brown.

Weld was drawn back to Chicago after hearing Howlin Wolf on the radio and found that he was welcome on the west side of Chicago.

He started sitting in at many clubs and landed a gig with Hound Dog Taylor’s band, Brewer Phillips,Ted Harvey, at Sweet Peas on 43rd Street.

Weld then moved on to the 1815 Club on West Roosevelt, which was owned and operated by Eddie Shaw who had Howlin Wolf’s band, the Wolf Pack.

In 1988 Dave decided to start his own band “Dave Weld and the Imperial Flames.”

This band featured the most authentic seasoned blues veterans in Chicago, such as Bernard Reed, Leo Davis, Daryl Mahon, Donny Nichilo, Mike Scharf, Vernon Rogers, and Ted Harvey.

They toured countless times around the world, local and national festivals and the best venues in the Midwest and the national.

The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will host its annual Elkhorn Creek Butterfly Festival on Saturday, July 27 from 1 to 5 p.m.

This fun, informative, family-friendly afternoon will be spent exploring the Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve for the many butterflies found at this site.

The preserve is three miles southwest of Forreston on the southwest corner of West Grove and Freeport Roads.

Participants may join guided butterfly tours or look on their own.

Tours begin at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.

To date, butterfly explorers have identified 34 species of butterflies and skippers.

Information about pollinators will be shared. A shady area will be provided with chairs and a restroom, cold beverages, and snacks.

Polo Senior Miss team wins doubleheader at home

Pearl City July 2. The game was highlighted by numerous walks as neither teams’ pitchers could find the plate.

Polo did not have a hit and the guests had but one but there was plenty of walks to go around.

Pearl City was issued 20 while Polo received nine. When the marathon game was over, the visitors prevailed by a score of 12-6.

On July 5, Polo’s Senior Miss team was back in action against Eastland.

In a game that lasted but an hour and five minutes the guests prevailed by a 4-1 margin.

Eastland scored a pair of runs in Three base the top of the second. on balls and infield out was all that was needed as the visitors took a 2-0 lead.

Polo crept to within one as they scored a solo run in the bottom of the third.

Jasmine Ludwig reached on a dropped third strike. She stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch to get Polo within one at 2-1.

The score stayed at 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth when a leadoff single, a walk and a critical error saw the visitors take a 3-1 lead.

Eastland added an insurance run in the top of the fifth as Polo went down in order in both the fourth and fifth innings to absorb the loss.

Polo did not have a hit in the game while Eastland was held to just one.

The key to the game came in the fourth when Polo’s defense committed a costly error that led to Eastland taking a two run lead that Polo just could not overcome.

In the second game, Polo was the guests and quickly took a 2-0 lead after half an inning.

However, Polo could not maintain that lead as they surrendered six runs in the bottom of the inning to give Eastland a 6-2 lead they would fashion into a 6-4 win due to the threat of lightening.

Inconsistent pitching spelled Polo’s downfall early on.

In the Polo first, with one down, Reylee Katner singled to right cenLindee Poper drew a walk ter. to put two on with one down.

Teah Almassy then singled to score Katner and Poper as Polo took a 2-0 lead.

Eastland then took the lead in the bottom of the inning receiving four walks, a double and a single.

The score was still 6-2, when the hometown ladies put a pair on the board in the top of the third. Reylee Katner opened the third with a single. Poper drew a walk.

Teah Almassy then smacked a sharp single up the middle to bring in Katner and Poper to close the score to 6-4.

Polo appeared to be coming alive offensively and in the pitching department in the inning and had the game continued might have given the visitors all they could handle.

Unfortunately, lightening threatened as the skies lit up and the game was called as the guests prevailed 6-4.

Polo had five hits for the night while Eastland had just two.

Polo’s Senior Miss team coached

Because of very wet playing conditions for much of the season, Polo had been rained out at home and was forced to play on the road.

Forreston came to town where they dropped the first of a double header by a score of 15-0.

Karlea Frey and Ali Danekas managed to toss a no hitter in that contest.

Polo jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and was never headed.

Polo’s biggest inning came in the second when they posted eight runs for the inning.

Annalise Stamm was hit by a pitch to open the inning.

Emmalee Gilbert was also hit by a pitch to put the first two runners of the game on.

Taylor Turnow, Ali Danekas and April Calderon all walked to bring in a pair of runs.

Teah Almassy then was hit by a pitch bringing another run.

Lindee Poper reached on a two base error that brought in a host of runs and the route was on.

Bree Cox walked and following an RBI out by Ashia McGinnis Karlea Frey smacked a double to left center to bring in two more runs giving the hometown ladies a 10-0 lead after two.

Polo added five more runs in the third. In that inning, Karlea Frey

had the big hit with a multiple run scoring triple.

Polo had seven hits for the game with Frey having an almost cycle with a single, double and a triple.

Forreston had no hits. Frey picked up the win for Polo.

The second half of the double bill saw Polo take a 12-6 win as the threat of lightening ended the contest after three innings.

Forreston jumped off to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. Polo tied the game at three in the top of the second as Polo was the visiting team in the nightcap.

Jasmine Ludwig had the big hit with a triple to deep center that scored the three runners on base.

The visitors regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with a solo run.

Polo then struck for nine runs in the top of the third. Four walks to open the inning brought in a run.

Then, with the bases loaded, Lindee Poper ripped a sharp single to left to bring in two more runs.

Bree Cox drew a base on ball to fill the bases again. Ashia McGinnis singled to score two more runs.

In the inning, all but two of Polo’s 11 batters would reach and score to give Polo a 12-4 lead midway through the third.

Forreston picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning as the threat of lightening ended the contest as Polo prevailed by a 12-6 margin.

Polo had three hits for the night to Forreston’s six. Karlea Frey picked up her second of the evening.

The Ogle County Fair Queen Committee is once again offering a hand-crafted basket for sale.

This is the fourth year of baskets made by Judy Hodgin, of Apple River.

This year’s basket oval in shape and measured five inches wide, seven and one-half inches long, and stands seven and one-half inches high.

The basket stained in a medium walnut with blue and wine-colored reed accents and accent petals and features a fold-down handle.

The cost of the basket is $40, and each comes with a commemorative tag made by Buffalo Run Enterprises, of Lamoille. Each is signed by Hodgin and numbered.

Serenity Hospice and the Oregon Park District will host a one-day summer camp for bereaved kids ages 6-17 on Wednesday, July 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nash Recreation Center, Oregon.

The camp is geared toward children who have experienced the death of a significant loved one.

“The camp will allow kids to connect with others who are their own age and who has experienced the death of a loved one and also enjoy a fun day of traditional camp activities,” said Cathy Warren, Serenity’s Bereavement Coordinator. “Studies show that these types of camps can be instrumental to kids as they work through their grief.”

Some of the activities the kids can participate in are swimming, racquetball, and pickleball. These normal camp activities will be interspersed with activities organized by Warren and her team of volunteers including making memory boxes and releasing butterflies.

A meal and two snacks are included and the cost to attend is $10. Scholar-

ships are available if this is a financial need.

“Serenity is a resource in our community,” Warren said. “And this is just another way that Serenity is able to serve and accomplish our mission of helping all people.”

July 2 Eric Post, 26, of Byron, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 12:33 p.m. in the 1,000 block of North Meridian Road for an equipment violation. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 3 Deputies responded to a car versus motorcycle accident at 11:44 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois 26 and Freeport Road.

A vehicle driven by James Mumford, 72, of Windsor, was turning left onto Illinois 26 from Freeport Road when it entered the path of a southbound motorcycle driven by Justin Burton, 34, of Forreston.

Burton was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital by Forreston EMS and was later flown to Mercy Hospital in Rockford for treatment of injuries.

Mumford and a passenger in his vehicle, Joyce Mumford, 69, also of Windsor, were transported to FHN Hospital, Freeport, by Polo EMS for treatment of injuries.

James Mumford was cited for failure to yield. The accident remains under investigation.

Paul Washington III, 29, of Rockford, was arrested for possession of controlled substance after a traffic stop at 8:10 p.m. in the 2,000 block of South Illinois 251 for an equipment violation.

The Ogle County K-9 Unit assisted with the investigation. Washington was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 4 Paul Perez, 25, of Hillcrest, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies were dispatched at 12:42 a.m. to an address in the 400 block of Wayne Road in Hillcrest for a domestic dispute.

Deputies were called at 5:11 p.m. to the 4100 block of West Illinois 64 to investigate a minor property damage accident.

Driver Kenneth Adams, 58, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

He was transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon, due issues not related to the accident. Adams was given and I-bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 7.

A vehicle driven by a male juvenile was northbound on Freeport Road and went out of control causing it to travel into the eastbound ditch.

The juvenile was arrested and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was issued citations for no valid driver’s license and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was later released to a parent.

Pines Automotive assisted in removing the vehicle.

Bryan Allen, 56, of Bellevue, Iowa, was arrested for felony driving while license suspended-BAIID (breath alcohol ignition interlock device) required, felony possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop at 5:26 p.m. in the 5,000 block of South Freeport Road. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Henry Contreras, 57, of Rockford, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was released from the Ogle County Jail on a $1,000 recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26.

Polo Senior Center to host six-day trip to Biltmore Estate Join the Polo Senior Center and travel to the Biltmore Estate (dressed in holiday glamour) and Asheville, North Carolina, nestled among the Blue Ridge Mountains for a pre-Christmas celebration of touring, eating, and shopping.

The chartered bus will leave Sunday, Nov. 10 from Faith United Methodist Church in Polo and return on Friday, Nov. 15.

This trip is for six days and five nights, including three consecutive days in the Asheville area, and eight meals (five breakfasts and three dinners).

The schedule is as follows: Day 1: Depart and check into en route hotel; Day 2: Travel and have dinner before checking

into Asheville hotel; Day 3: Visit the Biltmore Estate and Gardens and Antler Village & Winery, the Biltmore’s new village that connects the estate’s present and past, providing a place for dining, shopping, and historical exhibits; Day 4: Guided tour of Asheville, which features more Art Deco architecture than any other southern city outside of Miami Beach. The group will also see the St. Lawrence Basilica.

In the afternoon, the group will take a guided tour of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and visit the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor’s Center to see “America’s Favorite Journey,” a 24 minute film, and the Folk Art Center.

Day 5: Start the trip home but not before seeing the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea, Kentucky, a 20,000 square foot facility that offers Kentucky crafts, history, and shopping for Kentucky products.

The group will stay overnight at enroute hotel.

The price of this trip for double occupancy is $639 per person. Triple occupancy and single occupancy pricing and travel insurance are also available.

A $75 deposit is due upon sign up and final payment will be due on Sept. 3.

ROAD WORK

Illinois 251 in City of Rochelle to be under construction Construction work on Illinois 251 from Lakeview Drive to Veterans Parkway in Rochelle was slated to begin on July 9, weather permitting, according to a press release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Martin & Co. Excavating will be starting the $390,000 project to patch and resurface the roadway.

Daily lane closures with flaggers will be uti-

lized.

Drivers should be prepared to stop for flaggers who will be directing traffic through the work areas. The project is expected to be completed within six weeks, the press release said.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

To avoid the work area, when feasible, use alternate routes.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
