Vietnam War veteran Doug Wean will be the speaker at the Let Freedom Ring Patriotic Program on Thursday, July 4 at noon at the Reckmeyer Band Shell on the downtown Mt. Morris campus.

American Legion Post 143 will host the annual Patriotic Program.

Wean who graduated from Mt. Morris High School in the Class of 1966, is highly decorated for his bravery in combat.

He was awarded the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts for his battlefield actions as a Marine Corps medic.

He is a member of the Mt. Morris American Legion and a featured speaker for Memorial Day and Veterans Day services throughout the area.

Wean’s speech will focus on the 100th anniversary of the American Legion, founded in 1919.

Congress granted the American Legion its national charter in September of 1919, and Mt. Morris Post 143 received its charter the same month.

The annual ringing of the Official State of Illinois Freedom Bell, located on the Mt. Morris campus near the band shell, begins promptly at 1 p.m. in synchronization with other bell ringing events across the United States.

All are invited to attend the entire program, celebrate Independence Day, and join in the ringing of the famous bell 13 times, once for each of the original 13 colonies.

The Let Freedom Ring festival will begin on Wednesday, July 3 with the Little Miss and Mr. Firecracker Contest at 6 p.m. at the band shell, followed by the queen pageant and a patriotic performance by the Kable Concert Band.

LFR to feature variety of entertainment Aireloom Music Studio will feature two different programs on the band shell on two different days during the Let Freedom Ring festival in Mt. Morris.

Owner and instructor Mary Ley will bring her engaging kid’s show for kids of all ages to the stage on Saturday, July 6 from 12 to 1 p.m.

Ley specializes in “edutainment” and encouraging audience participation while singing and playing guitar with a wide variety of family friendly material.

from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Members are all string players ranging in age from 8 to 80 years old and will present a program of classical, patriotic, and devotional music.

The Magical Mr. B. will present his family friendly show of spell-binding magic and illusion on stage on Saturday, July 6 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Mr B. is also a balloon artist and will create a grand array of whimsical characters for the audience as well.

Headlining the Band Shell on Saturday, July 6 is the Prime Time Live Band from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The mission of Prime Time Live Band is to provide an enjoyable live music experience.

The band has received both RAMI and Best of Rockford Awards.

The band has an appeal to all ages, with one of the most diverse and danceable set lists in the area.

Members are Clare Schwartz on lead vocals, Mike Youngblood on lead guitar, Greg Smith on keyboards and saxophone, Dennis Mac on drums, and Kerry Schaible on bass.

Fly-In/Drive-In Breakfast July 4 Independence Day at Ogle County Airport starts with the pop-pop swoosh, of piston powered aircraft coming in for an all-you-can-eat Fourth of July breakfast.

The annual “Best in the Midwest” breakfast starts at 7 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m.

The $10 breakfast includes Eichman’s tasty ham and whole hog sausage, cantaloupe, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and stacks of pancakes with blueberry and other toppings.

Oregon software company celebrates 25 years

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com An Oregon business that started as a “leap of faith” recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Noel Bruns left a job with a large corporation and founded his own computer software business, Ablesoft Solutions Inc., in May of 1994.

“The Internet was just being born at that time. Starting a software business in a small town at that time was kind of a leap of faith,” Bruns, 59, said.

He had worked for corporate IT at ComEd in Chicago for eight years but wanted a better life for his family and transferred to the Byron Generating Station.

He worked there for seven years before launching his own business.

Bruns credited his wife Sally, a school teacher, with being very supportive of his endeavors, both emotionally and financially.

“I can’t say enough about how supportive my wife was, probably much against her better judgment,” he said with a grin.

At the time they had four small

children.

“The real drive to start the business was to control my environment and work with the people I wanted to work with,” Bruns said.

The business, which is located at 124 S. Fourth St., develops custom software for small and large companies both local and farther away.

They offer custom business systems, word processing systems, mobile applications, web applications, and web design.

Bruns’ two sons Eric and Ben are part of the business and the three of them comprise the management team.

Eric is a programmer analyst and Ben is in sales.

“I am incredibly fortunate to work with my two sons,” Bruns said. “We enjoy working with each other.

We’ve had up and downs over the years. Since the boys have come [into the company] I can see we have a strong future.”

“We all have different things we bring to the table and different skills,” Ben said.

LR museum reverently houses the area’s past

BY ANDREA MILLS For Sauk Valley Media You can’t help but feel a certain reverence for the past at the Leaf River Historical Society and Museum. It is, after all, in a former church.

Located along Illinois 72 and easily found, the museum has been in the former Church of the United Brethren in Christ since 1995. The church held its last service there in 1993.

The museum’s mission is to collect, research, preserve, and display artifacts and documents that tell the story of the Leaf River area’s heritage.

When I first arrived, I marveled at the building and the many items it holds. Remnants of its religious role are front and center – long pews from the building’s church days (and if you’re in the market for some of those pews, the museum has some for sale).

Just inside the building, I stopped to look over the 1936-era Leaf River Post Office sorting table and mailboxes for the rural routes, and was told by the friendly historical society staff that the railroad came to Leaf River in 1880, or rather Leaf River, then called Lightsville, moved to the site of the railroad that year after Lightsville residents saw the obvious benefits of being located along the railroad and made the move.

Today, the village no longer reaps those benefits, as the railroad no longer stops there.

The first floor of the former church is filled with items that catch the eye.

Large maps can be found rolled up along one wall. The one I could read was of Europe in 1919.

The church itself has an interesting history. It was built in 1894, making it of historic value along with the items it houses.

One of those items dates back to 1849:a land grant certificate to Robert White, signed by President Zachary Taylor.

The museum’s basement also has a wealth of information. This is a place to browse for ages.

My favorite room was down here.

I loved the kitchen setting.

A small kids’ table is the star of the scene, but anyone who enjoys looking at kitchens from the past will appreciate how this one is set up. The yellow sink is particularly eye-catching.

Near it is a display that demonstrates how much easier we have it today when it comes to doing the washing, which we think of in minutes and they thought of in hours or as a day’s work.

Photo by Andrea Mills that takes you down memory lane to a farm from the good old days, complete with winnow machine and a dog-powered treadmill that was used to power a cream separator.

Also displayed are school items, including an array of trophies that spill into two rooms, Boy Scout items, an area honoring veterans, and a fashion scene with a fine array of hats.

Sandy and Paul were on hand to answer my questions and provide guidance, and then I was left on my own to explore as much as I wanted to.

They were, however, never far away if I looked puzzled. One of the things I learned from them was that the original church bell is still in the tower. Somehow that made my visit complete.

Before leaving, be sure to take a look at Veterans Memorial Park, which is right beside the museum. It contains a Korean War cannon that you can’t miss when you arrive.

The museum is open on Sundays, fittingly enough for a former church – but only the first and third ones of the month, from May to October.

Historical walking tours in Oregon to be offered in July, August The Oregon Park District has joined Oregon community leaders to offer educational historic walking tours through Oregon and the nearby surrounding area.

“We will not walk far, just long enough to gain a wealth of knowledge,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation.

Participants should meet at the tour location. Each tour is $2 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $3 for non-residents.

The StingRays take the stage July 5 in Mt. Morris The Mt. Morris Jamboree will host Chicago’s Oldie’s Rock and Roll Band, The StingRays, for a free concert on Friday, July 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell, during the Let Freedom Ring.

“Everyone fortunate enough to see previous shows by this exciting and engaging act will fondly remember the dance contests, trivia, and dynamic stage presence of this wonderful band and will attest to the ‘do not miss’ grade level of their show,” said sent organizer Larry Ubben.

The StingRays play with the energy, passion, and authenticity of the artists whose music they love.

Their music, great rapport with audiences, their look, and the famous StingRay moves have made them repeated favorites at festivals, concert series, casinos, clubs, corporate events, and parties throughout the Midwest, he said.

The Byron Civic Band is beginning its fund drive to cover operational needs and educational goals of the community band.

The band is a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and donations are 100 percent tax deductible.

None of the band members or board members are paid, with the exception of the band’s director.

To encourage concert attendance, admission is not charged but a free will donation is accepted.

The Ogle County Fair Queen Committee is once again offering a hand-crafted basket for sale.

This is the fourth year of baskets made by Judy Hodgin, of Apple River.

This year’s basket oval in shape and measured five inches wide, seven and one-half inches long, and stands seven and one-half inches high.

The basket stained in a medium walnut with blue and wine-colored reed accents and accent petals and features a fold-down handle.

The cost of the basket is $40, and

each comes with a commemorative tag made by Buffalo Run Enterprises, of Lamoille. Each is signed by Hodgin and numbered.

All profits from the basket sales go to the 2019 Ogle County Fair Queen to help with costs at the state queen pageant in January of 2020.

FUNDRAISING EVENT

Annual event helps those burdened by medical expenses The 8th Annual KB Tough Run will be Saturday, June 29 at the White Pines Ranch, west of Oregon.

The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the KB Fund that was established to help those in the area community who are burdened by a medical crisis.

More than 70 families have been helped by the KB Fund since its formation. Their needs have ranged from expenses related to cancer treatments, chronic illness, accident recovery, special needs therapy, premature births and more.

Registration forms are available online at www.KBToughRun.com. “This year we are once again offering online registration. 5K Tough Run, Hike and Kid Sprint participants can all sign up online by visiting our website and following the ‘Register Now’ link,� said

KB Tough Run Committee Member Lesley Sheffield. “This year’s event will feature professional timing by Crossroads Events. Chipped bibs will allow for prompt and accurate race times for participants.�

The Tough Run and Hike registration is $30, while the Kid Sprint is $10. “Please join us for another family friendly event,� said Sheffield. “A $5 Kid Zone wrist band ensures unlimited access to all the games, face painting and activities. DJJ, Jason Hardin, will be setting up his mobile sound station to provide music and emcee services throughout the day. “The Ogle County Pork Producers will be on hand preparing their pork chop sandwiches and hot dog for dinner. Rockford Brewing Company will be on hand, featuring great local craft beers,� Sheffield said. “Fundraising activities including Horsey Bingo and a cash raffle are being organized too.�

Vintage Base Ball double-header June 30 The Oregon Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club will be playing a double-header of bare-handed, historic base ball on Sunday, June 30 starting at 1 p.m. on the Chana School Museum lawn at Oregon Park East located at 201 North River Road in Oregon.

The hometown Ganymedes will be playing the Creston Regulators Base Ball Club of Creston, and the McLean County Prairie Chickens Base Ball Club of Bloomington in an afternoon of 1858 rules base ball.

Admission is free.

This is the Ganymedes 15th season

of playing historic base ball on the Chana School Museum lawn.

“Bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit under the shade trees and enjoy the games. Come see how the game of baseball was meant to be played,” said Mark Herman, team manager.

The Ogle County 4-H Shooting Sports Program Registration is open for air rifle.

Air Rifle provides a supportive, adult-supervised environment four youth to learn and try something new. Youth must be ages 8 to 18 years old, by Sept. 1, 2018 to participate.

The 4-H Shooting Sports program maintains a strong relationship with the existing natural resources, safety, and outdoor recreation 4-H programs.

The materials and training programs emphasize young people and their life skills as the product of the program while using tested techniques and positive reinforcement.

This approach allows 4-H to increase awareness of natural resources and conservations (knowledge), to develop competency in safe shooting sports practices (skills), and to provide youth with positive workforce attitudes (behaviors).

Some opportunities may be available for competitive shooting events, at the regional, state, and national level. The Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program stands out as an example. LEARN TO RIDE

Ranch, park district offer horseback riding classes Registration deadline to sign up is July 6 The Oregon Park District and White Pines Ranch are offering a horseback riding and horse-care class to the public.

This class is suitable for anyone nine years of age and up. Participants will learn the basic skills needed to care for a horse, as well as enjoy leisure trail rides.

They will get hands-on experience grooming, saddling, basic ground work, and riding.

Classes run on Saturdays from July 13-Aug. 3 from 1:30-3 p.m. Each lesson

includes 45 minutes of horse care and a 45-minute trail ride.

Lessons will be differentiated, but are not compounded, so participants can enjoy one lesson or all four.

The full program cost is $200 for residents of park district and $240 for non-residents.

This includes all four sessions. Or you may pay per session for $60/residents and $72/non-resident.

All riding will be trail-rides with no experience necessary.

Classes will be held at White Pines Dude Ranch located west of Oregon.

Little Miss team walks its way to 18-12 victory

The sudden turn of events saw a close game turned in to what appeared to be a win for Polo One. However, Polo Two had other ideas as they put together a rally of eight runs.

With one down in the top of the fifth, Reagon Grenoble singled.

With two down, Ariel Foster walked as did Ravyn Dixon.

Then, singles by Leah Calderon, Kylie Cisketti, and Joya Katner led to five runs coming in to score.

Camyrn Cox then drew a walk and Alayna Young singled to score another run.

Izabella Witkowski then smacked a double to center to score two more runs which hit the eight run rule limit as Polo Two tied the game at thirteen heading into the bottom of the fifth.

With the time limit looming, Polo One needed just a solo run to win the game.

Ava McFalls drew a leadoff walk.

Leah Tobin then singled to send McFalls to third.

With runners at the corners and no outs, two base on balls forced in the winning run in the person of McFalls to give Polo One a thrilling 14-14 win.

Polo One had nine hits for the night while Izabella Witkowski had a single and a double to lead Polo Two’s six hit attack.

Thursday night’s double header for Polo’s entrant in the Senior Miss Division was rained out in Polo so Polo traveled to Pearl City which was to come to Polo for Polo’s first home game of the season due to previous rainouts.

While no details of the games were available at press time, it was known that Polo lost both ends of the double dip by scores of 13-0 and 11-0.

Pearl City featured two outstanding pitchers who limited Polo to just one hit over two games.

To wrap up home ball games, Polo Two was again in action Friday evening as they hosted a team from River Ridge in Junior Miss action.

This game was a walk-a-thon as neither team’s pitchers could find the plate.

When the long night was over, Polo prevailed by a margin of 24-14 giving Polo Two their first victory of the season.

Polo had but one hit for the game as Elsa Monaco singled to drive in a pair of runs in the second inning.

Polo collected 24 walks and six hit batsmen in the marathon affair.

River Ridge managed five hits and picked up 13 walks.

From on the road, we had these contests reported in as of press time.

On June 11, Polo Two of the Junior Miss Division traveled to Thomson where they dropped a 13-4 decision.

Polo banged out 13 hits with Alayna Young leading the way with a single and a double.

Elsa Monaco, Leah Calderon, Ripley Custer and Courtney Davis all had singles.

On June 20, Polo Two traveled to Pearl City where they dropped a 10-0 decision to the hosts.

As with the Senior Miss, Pearl City has some excellent pitching and they proved it by no hitting Polo Two. With the loss, Polo Two dropped to 1-8 for the campaign.

Three games were played at home over the past week.

On June 17, Polo’s Little Miss team hosted Eastland. In a game that lasted the full time limit and was marked by 35 walks, Polo walked its way to an 18-12 victory.

There were only two hits on the night as Polo’s Jillian Gorzny stroked a two run single with the base loaded in the bottom of the first to get Polo back to a four run deficit early in the inning.

Then, walks took over again to see Polo tie the game at six after one inning of play.

Polo’s Sandra Vock struck out three of the four Eastland batters she faced in the top of the second holding the visitors scoreless.

That half of an inning of play would be the difference in the game as Polo scored six in the bottom of the inning to go up 12-6 after two.

In the third inning, neither team’s pitcher could find the plate as the guests picked up six runs to tie the game midway through the third, and then Eastland’s pitcher would return the favor with a multitude of base on balls in the bottom of the inning as the hometown ladies picked up six to take an 18-12 win as time ran out.

On Tuesday, June 18, Polo One of the Junior Miss Division hosted Polo Two in a cross town battle with Polo One edging out Polo Two by the narrow margin of 14-13.

Polo Two jumped off to a quick 3-0 lead after one half inning.

fielder’s choice by Alayna Young and a single by Izabella Witkowski brought in two more runs to allow Polo Two to grab the early lead.

Polo Two’s Leah Calderon struck out the first batter she faced then walked Polo One’s Camyron Jones.

Cheyenna Wilkins then cracked a single to left to score Jones.

A hit batsman and two infield outs with a walk sandwiched in brought in two more as the inning ended tied at three.

Polo Two was held scoreless by Polo One’s Cheyenna Wilkens over the next two innings while Polo One picked up two runs in the second on a pair of base on balls and a two run scoring single by Katelynn Rockwood to put Polo up 5-3 after two.

Polo Two added a single run in the third to lead 6-3 after three.

Polo Two picked up two runs in the top of the fourth when four base on balls, a hit batsman and a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Rylee Custer closed the gap to 6-5 Polo One. Polo One then struck for seven runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-5 lead.

Polo One’s bats came alive in the inning. Leah Calderon led off the inning with a double to deep left center. She then stole third.

Two walks and then a single by Rockwood brought in two runs.

Bella Bergstrom reached on a fielder’s choice as another run scored.

Two more base on balls and back to back to back singles by Camyrn Jones, Cheyenna Wilkens and Addisynn Quinlan brought home several more runs before the final out to give Polo One a comfortable 13-5

First Fridays to provide musical fireworks July 5

With the explosive fireworks taking center stage on July 4th, Friday, July 5th will see musical fireworks on stage at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Drive, Mt. Morris.

The music is varied and includes country, folk, light rock, bluegrass, and frequently a fusion of several of those musical styles.

Each musician has 15 minutes on stage and at the end of the evening the

musicians all gather for a jam session.

Sound Engineer Mike Bratt provides a professional sound system for the musicians.

Be sure to come in hungry and thirsty as the Mt. Morris Moose has some of the best food and drink in the area.

6th Annual Archaeology Artifacts ID Day is July 6 The Byron Forest Preserve District will have its 6th Annual Archaeology Artifacts ID Day on Saturday, July 6 from 10 am to 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center located at 7993 North River Road, Byron.

“Come by and learn about your collection of arrow heads and other Indian artifacts,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of education for the forest preserver. “Talk to professional archaeologists from the Illinois State Archaeological Survey and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee about stone points, prehistoric tools, pottery shards, fossils, animal bones and other items that you have found and are curious about. If you don’t have any items of your own to identify, be sure to stop in any way to see these artifacts and live demonstrations.”

Herman said visitors can learn more about prehistoric tools and weapons through hands-on demonstrations at the interactive event.

“There will be special ongoing demonstrations of arrowhead and spearhead making techniques by nationally known flintknapper Larry Kinsella and others,” Herman said. “Larry has been teaching flintknapping for over 35 years. He will provide all materials and safety equipment to teach beginning flintknapping, the art of making stone tools from flint.”

Several areas in Illinois have reported large numbers of black flies that have been biting poultry, pets, livestock, and people.

Several poultry have died as a result of these attacks and people have sought medical attention.

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about buffalo gnats or black flies.

What are they?

Buffalo gnats or black flies are blood-sucking flies of the Simuliidae family. The females may attack people and animals in an effort to have a blood meal for egg production.

Do they pose a public health risk?

In humans their bites typically cause pain, itching, and swelling.

However, those who have an allergic reaction may have more serious complications.

Will they harm my animals?

The consequences for animals can be more severe. Livestock and poultry are sometimes killed by the flies when bitten by large numbers of them. Death can be due to anaphylactic shock, toxemia, blood loss, or suffocation when the flies are inhaled. Some species of black flies can transmit a bloodborne parasite that affects poultry called, leukocytozoon.

When can I expect them to be a problem?

The adults emerge in the late spring to early summer and are known to travel more than 10 miles in search of a meal. The larvae are

very sensitive to water temperature. Once the water temperature reaches 66 -75 degrees F the larvae will die and the buffalo gnat season is over until next year.

Why are they causing problems now?

The eggs are laid in running water and the larvae are filter feeders.

They are sensitive to sediment, toxins, and low oxygen levels in the water. With adequate rainfall and as surface water quality improves the conditions are more favorable for the flies.

How can I protect myself from them?

Black flies are outdoor, daytime

feeders so the best protection is avoidance. If you must be outside, light colors and long sleeves are recommended. Permethrin treated clothing and insect repellants containing DEET have been used with limited success.

How can I protect my animals from them?

Animals that are housed indoors are at a much lower risk of being bitten even if the building is not flyproof. It is recommended that poultry be kept indoors in a darkened barn during the day. Usually fans or some means of cooling are needed.

Permethrin-based fly control products are recommended for livestock and poultry.

landing pit the jumpers used during that period. On the first Saturday of April, a half-dozen pick-up trucks would go to the Holm’s farm and bring back 100+ bales of hay. (Harlan Holm’s father would donate the hay bales for the pole vault each spring.)

First, we made a 15’ by 15’ bottom layer of hay bales. Next, we made sides around the perimeter staking the bales two high.

The second Saturday in April, the pickup trucks drove to the mattress company in Morris, Illinois and loaded up with mattress remnants.

Bales of hay and foam rubber pieces became our landing pit for the season.

The amazing thing was that the Hawk pole vaulters overcame this inadequate landing facility. Our pole vaulters during

that four-year period included: Brian Thompson (12’ 9”); Steve Janssen (11’6”); Larry Green (10’ 6”); Ken Kubat (10’3”); Terry Johnson (9’ 6”); and Mike Johnson (8’ 6”).

Steve (1970) and Brian (1972) were conference champions in the pole vault.

They also provided the winning point margins for three straight Blackhawk Conference Team Championships.

I would like to end this letter by thanking the Holm family for donating the bales of hay and the track team members for driving to the mattress company in Morris.

Also, a final congrats to Jake and Oregon Girls Track & Field team for their Big Northern Conference Championship.

PUBLIC VOICE An open letter to Congressman Kinzinger Dear Editor, Well, there you are making headline news this morning criticizing President Trump for not launching a totally out of proportion attack on Iran which could have killed up to 150 people when you should be criticizing Trump and his administration every day for their many multiple cruel policies but especially for sending his Justice Department lawyer to court (Sarah Fabian) and saying in a recent hearing, that a toothbrush and soap were not necessary to fulfill requirements for sanitary conditions for detained migrant children and that children can sleep on cold concrete floors.

Focus to be on impaired drivers, seat belt law violators Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle announced plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers.

The safety campaign runs from June 17 through July 8 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day. “We’re asking all of our residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely,” VanVickle

said. “It’s simple: if you’re driving, don’t drink or use drugs. Our officers will be out in full force to keep impaired drivers off the road.”

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office will join the Illinois State Police and more than 160 local police and sheriff’s departments for the increased statewide enforcement effort.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and

“Click It or Ticket” campaigns are made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The crackdown runs concurrently with a media campaign reminding motorists that impaired driving has “Life or Death” consequences.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

June 18 William Shively, 36, Ocala, Florida, was charged with aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, and battery after deputies responded at 8:43 p.m. to a disturbance at Grubsteakers at the intersection of Illinois 64 and 251.

Deputies found an unidentified male bleeding profusely from a stab wound to the leg and immediately provided medical attention to him.

An unidentified female on scene had minor injuries from an altercation with Shively, who also had minor injuries.

All three were transported to Rochelle Community Hospital and treated for their injuries.

Shively was taken into custody and transported to Ogle County Jail.

June 19 At approximately 9:07 p.m., deputies responded to the 800 block Main Street, Leaf River, in reference to an unwanted subject. After a short

investigation, Joshua S. McQuality, 42, of Leaf River, was arrested for domestic battery. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Manuel P. Estrella, (age and address not listed) was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 4000 bock of N. Illinois 2.

Estrella was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Fred Robison, 38, of Peoria, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for a probation violation and failure to appear. Robison’s bonds were set at $3,000/10% and $945 pending a June 20 court appearance.

Erich Huber, 37, of Stillman Valley, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended. He received a $3,000 recognizance bond and was released from the Ogle County jail. He is scheduled to return for court on July 12.

June 20 Michael Jordan, 58, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:19 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following

a traffic stop for a moving violation in the 6000 block of S. Illinois 2. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Norah Shatwi Alshatwi, 32, of Atlanta, Georgia, was arrested at 10:19 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop at Illinois 64 and Kent Road. Alshatwi was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Christopher Baker, 28, of Rockford, was arrested at 3:03 a.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 10000 block of N. Illinois 2. Christopher was transported to the Ogle county Jail.

June 21 Christopher Mullen, 44, of Lanark, was arrested at 1:03 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 15000 block of W. Illinois 64 for an equipment violation.

Mullen was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance outside of 409 Wild Rice Lane in Lost Nation. After an investigation Thomas Fiala, 63, was arrested for domestic battery and disorderly con-

duct. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

June 23 At approximately 12:10 a.m., deputies responded to 111 Main Street in Leaf River for the report of a domestic battery that had just occurred. After conducting an investigation, Tobias Whetsel, 37, of Leaf River was arrested Whetsel was for domestic battery. transported to the Ogle County Jail.

June 24 Michael Henry, 37, of Kings, was arrested at 4:43 p.m. for driving while license suspended and on an active warrant out of Lee County following a traffic stop at Queens Road and Bethel Road. Henry was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Rigoberto Garcia, 22 of Rockford, was arrested at 8:48 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 10000 block of N. Leaf River Road. Garcia was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

OBITUARIES LAWRENCE J. ASCHER Lawrence John Ascher, 94, of St. Anne, died on Friday, June 21, 2019 at his home.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1925 in Seward, to Tabb and Helen (Kaltenbach) Ascher.

He married Phyllis Leona (Kilker) Ascher on Aug. 7, 1948.

Lawrence was a farmer, was employed by Union Dairy, Freeport, and a DX gas salesman.

He was also custodian and bus driver for Forreston High School, owner operator of Ascher’s Grocery, Forreston, and worked in the maintenance department at Freeport Memorial Hospital.

Lawrence liked to fish, garden, and

work in his yard. He was a good carpenter. He loved to help on the farm at harvest time.

He was a long-time member of North Grove Evangelical Church in Forreston, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder, treasurer, and cemetery board member.

It was at North Grove where he gave his life to Christ more than 50 years ago.

Since moving to the Kankakee area, he was a faithful and loved member of Grace Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Albina (Bra-

DELORES S. PRITCHARD Delores S. Pritchard, 83, of Forreston, died on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor, Mt. Morris.

Delores was born on Oct. 29, 1935 in Ogle County, the daughter of Frank and Sylvia (Buntjer) Buss.

She married Donald E. Pritchard on Sept. 9, 1956 in Forreston. He died on March 5, 1997.

Classrooms painted at Chana Education Center Sherwin Williams, school staff paint two classrooms Two classrooms at the Chana Education Center are sporting new paint thanks to Sherwin Williams.

The school, located in Chana, was chosen as a Sherwin Williams Madison South Region’s National Painting Week host site and on May 31 residential and commercial store representatives from more than 10 Sherwin Williams locations throughout Beloit, Freeport, Rockford, Sterling, Machesney Park, Dixon, Belvidere, and Loves Park, as well as a 3M representative for Construction and Home Improvement spent the day with several Chana staff completely transforming both the sensory and art rooms.

The project was organized

by Freeport store manager, Amanda Dinderman, originally from Oregon.

She has become involved with the school after hearing of the positive impacts that Chana has had on both the lives of its students and area community.

“The Chana school is doing good things for kids, so we wanted to do something good for them,” she said.

She coordinated with her regional team and 3M partner to provide the paint, supplies, and labor to makeover two class spaces that are utilized by students in the Chana programs.

3M also donated a surplus of 3M hanging products to display student projects on a newly painted gallery wall in the art room.
