ART CONTEST

FHS students design logos for library Forreston High School art students recently participated in a competition to design the new logo for the Bertolet Memorial Library in Leaf River.

Library director Linda Schreiber and library board president Larry Wagner presented awards to the top three winners.

In first place, Montanna Heinz, a freshman, designed an array of maple leaves floating among an open book and the name of the library.

In second place, Katie Erdmann, a senior, designed a stack of books with the name of the library underneath.

In third place, Nicole Fox, a junior, designed a red maple leaf with the Leaf River running through it in blue.

All three award winners were presented with a monetary prize along with a new set of headphones.

This graphic design project helped students understand the process of designing for a client.

The winning designs, along with a few other submissions, are used on the Bertolet Memorial Library’s website, Facebook page, and letterhead.

Reibel to step down from county zoning

A longtime Ogle County official tendered his resignation to the Ogle County Board last week.

After 25 years as Planning & Zoning Administrator, Michael Reibel told the county board in a letter that he will step down Aug. 31.

Board chairman Kim Gouker said Reibel, 51, of Byron, plans to enter the ministry.

Gouker read a portion of Reibel’s letter at the May 21 meeting, which said he had “answered God’s persistent call.”

Reibel plans to attend seminary this fall in Dubuque, Iowa, Gouker said, and will serve as a part-time minister at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lanark.

The county board appointed Reibel to his post in 1994.

In other business, the board approved fess hikes for the Sheriff’s Department and Health Department.

According to the resolution, the Sheriff’s Department’s fee increases were recommended by a study done by Bellwether LLC, a business consultant based in Normal.

The fee increases will mainly affect prisoners being held at the jail.

The Health Department fee increase affected include food service licenses and permits, and private sewers and wells.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Lenz Scholarship goes Mitch Heinz Forreston High School senior Mitchell Heinz, was chosen by the Foundation for Focus House Scholarship Committee as the recipient of the F. Lawrence Lenz Scholarship in the amount of $500.

The F. Lawrence Lenz Scholarship Fund was established in April of 2003 by Lenz’s family following his death.

As an Ogle County Circuit Judge, Lenz elected to be the juvenile court judge. In this capacity he was one of the instrumental supporters of the opening of Focus House in 1975.

From the bench he believed in the value of having community-based programs and was an advocate of Focus House until his death.

Heinz plans to attend Concordia University in St. Paul Minnesota to pursue a career in Criminal Justice.

The scholarship committee was impressed with his involvement in extracurricular activities as well as his public service, volunteer work, and his work ethic.

The Foundation of Focus House Board of Directors is grateful for the opportunity to award scholarships to deserving students every year and wishes Heinz and the entire Class of 2019 happiness and success in their next chapter.

German Valley Days offers fun June 7-9

The German Valley Historical Museum will be open from noon to 6 p.m. This year’s special exhibit is Historical Photos.

The German Valley Days parade will begin with a fly over by Albertus Airport Pilots at 1:30 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m. a Pie Eating contest, sponsored by Vicki’s Baked Goods and More, will be held in the park shelter and the “Spotted Dog Three Peace Rock & Roll Show” will be onstage.

Nerf Wars will take place on the park ball diamond from 2:30 to 6 p.m.

Activities at 3 p.m. will include a Bags Tournament, sponsored by Alcohol Party Catering, and stilt walking

Sandy’s Face Painting & Balloons will be located in the park shelter from 3 to 5 p.m.

Visit the Rockford Discovery Center’s “Flying Corn Booth” from 3 to 6 p.m.

The German Valley Fire Department will serve a pork chop dinner at the fire station from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. (shuttle service provided to and from the park).

“Hillbilly Horseshoes” competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. in front of the stage.

“Grass Attack” will perform onstage from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

A fireworks display in the Lake Baalton area will conclude the day’s activities.

On Sunday there will be a “Festival of Praise” worship service at 10 a.m. at Ben Miller Park. The rain location is Silver Creek Reformed Church.

First installment of real estate taxes due June 7 Ogle County Collector Linda Beck reminded property owners last week that the first installment of property tax bills is due on Friday, June 7.

The second installment will be due on Friday, Sept. 6.

Payment methods include cash or check (payable to Ogle County Collector).

In-person payments can be made

at the treasurer’s office located in the Ogle County Courthouse, 105 S. Fifth St., Suite 114, Oregon or at any bank in Ogle County.

Beck’s office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

Mailed payments must be post-

marked by the due date to be considered timely.

The 46th annual German Valley Days festival will salute Illinois Agriculture with the theme, “Down On The Farm.” It will kick off on Friday, June 7.

Activities will take place in the Ben Miller Park and along Church Street.

The Silver Creek SWIFT will serve a celebration supper beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.

Open coloring for all ages will take place at the information booth from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.

A special Lions Club presentation will be held at 6:15 p.m.

A Little Miss & Mister Pageant, the presentation of the German Valley Area’s Most Valuable Person Award, and the announcement of “Bucket of Junk” competition winners will begin at 7 p.m.

At 8 p.m. local talent will take the stage to present “Hee Haw” German Valley 2019, reminiscent of the popular American Classic television show.

Saturday’s activities will begin with a pancake breakfast served by the Silver Creek ACTS Ministries from 6:30 to 10 a.m. at the German Valley fire station.

The fire station will also be the location for free FHN blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings.

Fasting for eight hours prior to glucose testing is recommended.

At 8 a.m. the “Run the Valley” 5K & Kids’ Fun Run will begin at the Ben Miller Park.

At 8:30 p.m., registration for the Antique Tractor Show, sponsored by the German Valley Golden Eagles 4-H Club, will begin at 310 Church St. Tractor games are scheduled at 3 p.m.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. for the German Valley Lions Car Show to take place at 525 Church St. Car Show Awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m.

At 9:30 a.m., a pig scramble for children age 3 through 10 will take place behind the historical museum, 805 Church St. Pre-register by calling 815-362-3671.

A Euchre Tournament will begin at 10 am. at the fire station.

LEAF RIVER FESTIVAL

Summer Daze kicks off with music and fireworks An Antique Tractor and Engine Show kicks off the three-day Leaf River Summer Daze festival on Friday, May 31 along with a tractor rodeo at 6 p.m. at the field behind the River Valley Complex.

Numerous food booths will be open, as well as the Lions stand serving hamburgers, hot dogs, and bratwurst sandwiches.

The Grass Attack bluegrass band will play from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Central States Fireworks will provide the fireworks show at dusk.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will once again host its truck and tractor pull on Saturday.

The pulls begin at noon, and will

feature classes for antique tractors, farm tractors, trucks, and Badger State Pullers.

The entry fee for pullers is $25 per hook, and all-day spectator admission is $10, with kids 6 and under getting in free.

This event is a fundraiser for the FFA Alumni, and it helps to support their organization as well as the Forreston High School FFA Chapter.

An antique tractor parade will be held during the pull and a tractor show is planned all weekend.

The Leaf River Firemen will serve breakfast Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the River Valley Complex.

The Lions Car Show begins at 9

a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. in the parking lot south of the Bertolet Memorial Library.

The various food booths also begin their day at 10 a.m.

The Merry Martha Club will again have a quilt raffle.

The Leaf River Historical Museum will hold its annual fundraiser all three days of the festival.

The museum will be open on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, June 2 from 12 to 4 p.m.

A bake sale inside the museum will feature pies, cakes, cookies, and snacks.

Buy chances for the quilt raffle and

numerous silent auction items.

Outdoors activities include crafts, a tug-of-war contest over a mud pit, a greased pig contest, and a pie eating contest for all ages.

The Mt. Morris Moose food truck will be there to serve meals and be sure to get some homemade ice cream.

The festival will continue on Sunday.

The Leaf River Lions will serve pork chop dinners on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Building.

The Grand Parade steps off at 2 p.m. from the RVC building.

The raffle drawings all happen at 4 p.m. at Bertolet Park.

Lions offer eye screenings during Summer Daze The Leaf River Lions Club in conjunction with the Lions of Illinois Foundation will provide free vision screenings for children age 6 months to 6 year of age on Saturday, June 1, during Leaf River Summer Daze.

The screenings will be done inside the Bertolet Memorial Library starting at 10 a.m.

The Lions have collaborated with Plusoptix to use the Plusoptix S12C camera.

The screening will be done by a Lions Club member trained on how to operate and interpret the camera.

Young children who may not be

able to express their vision problems or who do not know they have them can end up compensating so well that their parents do not realize there is a problem.

Early detection is the vital key when it comes to vision.

Parental consent is required for the screening, and paperwork must be filled out.

The screening will give participants either a “pass” or “refer” result providing parents an indication of whether or not the child needs further vision testing by an eye care professional.

BAND CONCERT

FORRESTON POLICE

The Mt. Morris Kable Concert Band begins its summer season of Wednesday night concerts on Wednesday, June 12.

Concerts will be performed every Wednesday night through July 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris. Conducting the band is Andy Eckardt.

2019 marks the 122nd year of Kable band concerts.

The band plays a variety of music, from rousing marches, Broadway show tunes, and classic band numbers Special soloists are featured each concert.

The band also performs a patriotic concert at the DLR Junior High field, on Thursday, July 4, prior to the fireworks display.

Benches are available, or bring lawn chairs. Ice cream and pie socials served by local organizations begin at 7 p.m. just before the weekly concerts.

Morings to mark 50th anniversary

Four awarded Stillman Bank scholarships

Daryl and Nina Moring, of Forreston, will celebrate their golden anniversary on May 29.

Daryl Moring and Nina Brown were married on May 29, 1969 at the Elkhorn “Brick” United Methodist Church, rural Polo.

They have three sons, Keith (Connie), of Elgin; Dale (Sondra), of Lugoff, South Carolina; and Brian (Leanne), of Lakeville, Minnesota.

They also have six grandchildren, Christian (Abigail), Kyle, Dylon, Austin, and Kendall.

The couple will celebrate their 50 years with family at a later date.

Four area high school seniors, who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, have been named winners of Stillman Bank’s 2019 Eickman Scholarship.

The 2019 recipients are Katelyn Byerley, Oregon High School; Ally Abel, Byron High School; Olivia Kerr, Stillman Valley High School; and Abby Ally Abel Lundquist, Rochelle Township High School.

Each student received a $1,900 scholarship.

Now in its 24th year, the scholarship fund was established by former Stillman Bank President, William E. Eickman as a way to give back to the Ogle County community.

Eickman was always grateful to the people of Ogle County for their support, recognizing Katelyn Byerley that they were the reason for the bank’s success since 1882.

The scholarship is available to high school seniors attending school in Byron, Oregon, Rochelle and Stillman Valley.

The fund is designed to award a scholarship, not less than $1,500, to one recipient from each of these four communities.

Each year, committees review all of the applications Olivia Kerr that are submitted, and from this process, finalists from each school are selected for personal interviews with the review committees.

“The Eickman Scholarship is just one of the ways Stillman Bank invests in the potential of students within our local communities,” said David Bogner, Stillman Bank Vice President and Trust Officer. “This is a fantastic opportunity for high Abby Lundquist school students that are looking to further their education within the medical field.”

Any high school senior at Byron, Oregon, Rochelle, or Stillman Valley High Schools who is interested in applying for the Eickman Scholarship is encouraged to inquire with their guidance counselor.

Application forms are available from each school’s respective counseling office and must be submitted by the assigned deadline.

A copy of the student’s high school transcript and proof of acceptance at an accredited college or university must be attached to the application.

Mt. Morris resident earns prize for project at Bradley University For her senior capstone project at Bradley University, Peoria, Kristin Drew, of Mt. Morris, and her classmates formed MK PR public relations agency with a goal to address the lack of youth participation in Peoria neighborhood associations.

This goal was decided upon after discovering that of the 119 active Peoria neighborhood associations, no members were under the age of 21 as of January of 2019; the majority of members are older than 30.

Teachers receive Leadership Awards in education The Illinois Principal’s Association Northwest Region has chosen Cassie Jennings, of Byron, and Stephanie White, of Rochelle, as recipients of the 2019 Leadership Awards for recognition of outstanding achievements in their educational practice.

The IPA Northwest Region consists of six counties and more than 200 schools.

This year, Jennings was one of four teachers to receive an award in the region, and White was the only Certified Support Staff selected in the region.

Both are employed with Ogle County Educational Cooperative and work at Chana Education Center.

This year, Chana Education Center was the only school in the region to have two staff members selected to receive awards.

Jennings has been teaching PE and in the Challenge Regional Safe Schools Program at Chana for three years.

In her time with the school she has transformed the physical education program to focus on physical, social, and emotional health.

She includes fitness, yoga, health, and mindfulness exercises to support emotional self-regulation with students.

Jennings provides classroom

teachers with strategies to provide appropriate movement opportunities for students to help when they need to energize or calm to be ready to learn.

She earned grants for the school to establish a fitness room in the building that students utilize for gym time, and also when they need regulation breaks.

White has been the school social worker at Chana for six years.

She serves an integral role in providing social and emotional supports for students.

White has created partnerships with several area mental health agencies to host counseling services inside the school building, as well as becoming a certified Trauma Informed trainer.

She led the transformation of Chana in becoming centered in trauma-informed practices.

White provides training to area schools and agencies on understanding how Adverse Childhood Experiences can affect child brain and social development, which impacts their abilities to perform in schools and develop relationships with others.

She also supports students in their future planning by helping them make connections with potential future employment opportunities and colleges.

SPECIAL EVENTS Polo Rehab to sponsor moonlight golf outing Polo Rehabilitation & Health Care Center will host moonlight golf on Saturday, June 8 at Sunset Golf Club, Mt. Morris.

Tee time is at 5 p.m.

The fee of $50 per golfer includes 18 holes of golf, dinner, one lighted ball for nighttime holes, and a cart.

All proceeds will go to the resident enrichment fund that helps supply needed items.

“From there, take some time to enjoy your lunch and play by the water, and a shuttle will come around to bring you back to where you parked,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation.

Dear Editor, When a tragedy occurs, there are many reactions that are considered “common and normal” for those left behind to cope.

Shock and disbelief, confusion, anger, numbness and fear, guilt and blame are just a few of these responses.

Since Maggie and Amos Meyer were killed on Oct. 16, 2016, these feelings and more have been experienced by their many loved ones who remain hopeful that their questions of what happened that night will one day be answered and justice will be served.

While they wait, these individuals continue to strive to ensure that the legacy of Maggie and Amos be more than one of tragic ending, and instead speak to the life of kindness, service to others, and gratitude that they both lived.

On April 27, the third annual Infinity Run and Family Event, held in memory of Maggie and Amos, served this purpose.

Despite a brutal late-April snowstorm, hundreds of participants still showed up and shared in celebrating the lives of Maggie and Amos.

Runners and walkers fought through snow, sleet, and ice to compete in the 5k and 1 mile run/walk events.

Children lined up in the Kid’s Zone for free games of Plinko, Bozo Buckets, and Fishing for Prizes.

The Silent Auction featured table after table of local donations and offerings for attendees to bid on.

The unexpected cold weather may have caused some last minute adjustments, but hearts were warm as the community joined together to support the event that in total grossed over $7,500.

These proceeds will all be shared back out in the name of Maggie and Amos to fund local educational programming to

Oregon native climbs to the top of the world 1998 OHS graduate, Chad Gaston scales Mt. Everest despite line of climbers

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com Oregon native Chad Gaston successfully made it to the highest spot on Earth May 22 and has now descended back down to the real world.

Gaston, 39, is one of a team of eight that reached the summit of Mt. Everest, 29,035 feet above sea level.

He made it back to Base Camp 4.

“I’m back at basecamp with the whole team, beat up a bit but safe,” he wrote in his blog May 25.

“What an adventure, what a dream come true, and what a nightmare!”

The climb took Gaston far from his home in the tropics.

Chad Gaston The 1998 Oregon High School graduate owns the Iguana Surf Shop surf shop in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, with his sister, Lindsey Gaston, 37.

The temperature on Mt. Everest, which straddles the border of Nepal and China in the Himalayan Mountains, never rises above freezing, and this time of year, hovers around 0.

Gaston, the son of Lamont Gaston and White Pines Resort President Elizabeth George has chronicled his two-month adventure on his Facebook page, and a blog.

An experienced climber, he has chronicled his journey climbing glaciers, dodging avalanches, riding out ice storms and just generally thumbing his nose at death.

So far this year, 11 people have died in the effort to climb Mt. Everest.

During the week of May 20, crowds of climbers became delayed in a long line headed to the summit, above the mountain’s highest camp at 26,247 feet.

Experts say most people can only spend a matter of minutes at the summit without extra oxygen supplies, and the area where climbers have been stuck is sometimes called the “death zone.”

Mountaineers have suggested that difficult weather conditions, the climbers’ lack of experience, and the growing commercialization of expeditions have contributed to the queue of climbers waiting to get to the peak.

It wasn’t what they hoped for, but it will still go down as one of the most successful boys state track and field meets in the history of both Forreston and Polo high schools.

The co-op finished with 21 points at the IHSA meet on the campus of Eastern Illinois in Charleston. It didn’t earn them a state trophy, but it was enough for a third straight top-10 finish.

“It’s always bittersweet,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “You’re right in the hunt for a trophy and miss out, but is nice to have a bunch of kids come home with medals.”

Catlin (Salt Fork) won the meet with 40, followed by DuQuoin and Pana with 36. F-P tied with Hall Township for seventh place.

Led by a runner-up in the discus from Jace Coffey and 4-event placer Brady Webb, F-P brought home medals in six events, adding to the total of 15 over that 3-year span.

After what he termed a rough day in Thursday’s preliminaries (156-5), Coffey had a dream series in Saturday’s finals with throws of 172-4, 173-8 and 177-8.

“We’ve been focusing on speeding up through the ring,” discus coach Steve Christensen said. “For the last three weeks, he’s had his technique down. Now, it’s working through the ring with acceleration. That’s where the extra distance comes in.”

Each throw in the finals surpassed his PR and his Polo school record of 172-3 and pulled him within two feet of the 179-10 by Joe Kingery of Teutopolis. Ironically, Coffee and Kingery, both at 5-10 and 195 pounds, were far and away the smallest competitors.

“Joe’s a great guy and I had such a good time for all the competitors,” said the affable Coffey. “When things weren’t going so well for me, CJ Picazo of Tuscola pulled me aside and helped me settle down. This meet was the best competition ever.”

Coffey was aided by some extra practice the night before finals.

“Last night, I came out here with coach Steve and he figured out what was wrong,” Coffey said. “Everything he told me to do worked.”

Webb made it three state places in a row in the long jump with a mark of 21-10.5. That took seventh and though he medaled, there was a sense of disappointment in not

“In the long jump, you have to put it all together at once,” said Webb, of the difficulties involved in nailing that one perfect jump, like Mason Wright was able to do on his final attempt at the 2017 state meet in the triple jump. “That can be hard to do.”

Webb also ran in the 100 finals and claimed the title of the eighth-fastest runner in 1A with a clocking of 11.16. Cody Klein gave Pana its first-ever first place in any event, with a time of 10.85.

The other individual medalist for F-P was sophomore Bennett Soltow in the 110 hurdles. Soltow was all smiles after finishing ninth with a 15.45.

Mason Barr of Colfax-Ridgeview ran 13.94 and missed by .01 of breaking the 1A record.

“It was amazing to be able to run against him,” Soltow said. “I had him in the prelims too and flew right by me.”

Soltow sees a good future for the team’s hurdling potential with freshman Matthew Beltran.

“I want to keep going what AJ (Christensen) started and plan to help Beltran,” Soltow said.

The coop between Forreston and Polo have made a name for themselves in the relays at the state meet and this year was no exception with both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 placing. The 400 relay didn’t go off as planned, after a bad exchange between Cailean Davids and Evan Kelsey on the first handoff.

“My knee just kind of stopped,” explained Davids, the lead runner. “It’s a tough thing to happen and I don’t know why. But, it’s been a great career with the coaches I’ve had in football and track, the friends and the way the community supports us.”

The team did have an official finish time of 49.11 for ninth place, five seconds behind everyone else.

“It was a huge disappointment and all we could do is make the best of it,” said Kelsey. “I know Cailean is beating himself up. But he ran great leg on the 4 x 2. I’m just happy to leave with two medals on my neck.”

In the 4 x 200 relay, it was Kelsey, Davids, Webb and Dom Christensen blazing to a 1:30.64, good for fourth. Hall Twp. won both the 400 and 800 relays.

“I’m just happy to leave with two medals around my neck,” Kelsey said.

Ethan Phillips also competed on Saturday, but finished out of the medal round with an 11th in the triple jump (42-7).

With all individual finalists from Polo, the team got a fire truck escort into town Saturday night.

“That was a real nice thing for the community to do,” Wagner said. “Especially, with how well the Polo kids did. Since we’ve had the coop, it’s been a great relationship with the athletes from both towns and man, has it made a difference in scoring points at the state meet.”

Among NUIC teams, a resurgent Dakota took fourth in the 400 relay. Jayden Kempel (300 hurdles) and Lucas Peterson (800) of Pearl City were eighth.

Isaiah Bruce and Ian Kuehl of Lena-Winslow made the finals in the throws, but failed to place.

Byron did not have a medalist, but Oregon got a second in the pole vault from Jake Mennen (14-9).

Kyle Kruhtoff of Erie-Prophetstown set a new 1A record with a vault of 16-8, besting anything done in 2A or 3A on Saturday.

Drive back from Charleston can be bittersweet A

s Bob Wagner said after the state track meet, this time of year can be bittersweet.

You’re glad for the experience of coaching or being on a sports team, but often sad when the season comes to an end or the cheering dies out.

For me that takes place on the long drive back from Charleston, unless of course the Forreston baseball team is still playing in the post season. Lately, a super-sectional appearance on Monday has been a possibility for the Cardinals.

Instead, River Ridge/Scales Mound got that pleasure.

ton-RRSM game, but felt like I was right there listening to Don Werntz and John Reed broadcast it.

As the high-school sporting year comes to a close, credit needs to be heaped on their radio station for their coverage, both in quantity and quality for northwest Illinois.

Don has plenty of tidbits and

trivia that enlighten a broadcast.

For example, I learned that coach Don Carlson was missing the game because of a surprise vacation in Spain given by his wife Voncile.

In a funny exchange, Werntz and Reed wondered if Don would rather be at the game or on vacation.

That’s the beauty of their dialogue – they know the personalities in every community they cover and don’t mind poking fun.

That’s another reason I prefer small-town living to big-city life.

I also listened to the Forreston softball game and what a heartbreak that was for the Cardinals. It seems

like that in girls sports, Forreston gets so close to cracking through in the post season.

No doubt, Forreston has good girls teams, but competition in the NUIC is so tough in volleyball, basketball and softball. And, it doesn’t like that trend is going to stop anytime soon.

In year three of not co-oping baseball and softball, it certainly has been a good decision for Forreston.

I’m not sure how Polo feels about it, but at least more kids are getting playing time.

With Brady Webb making the finals in four events, Forreston-Polo put itself in position to contend for a state trophy at the IHSA 1A track and field meet. After Thursday’s preliminaries, F-P had five individual events and two relays competing in Saturday’s finals.

Webb started his day with a 21-10 effort in the long jump to hold down the sixth spot with three more jumps in the finals. He blazed to a time of 11.10 in winning his heat of the 100 and anchored both the 400 and 800 relays.

“Obviously, it’s an honor to advance in four events. It’s definitely a relaxed feeling being down here my senior year,” Webb said.

Joining him on the relays were Cailean Davids, Evan Kelsey and Dom Christensen. One disappointment for the team was not making finals in the 1,600 relay, an event they were seeded No. 2 in but ran two and half seconds (3:30) slower than at sectional.

“In the heat and humidity, all four runners already had a heavy work load by the time the event kicked off late in the afternoon.

“We were exhausted,” Kelsey said.

They shined in the sprints, though, with the 400 relay (43.21) holding the second best time of the day and the 800 relay (1:30.55) the third best.

“I was okay with my discus (156-5), but coming that close to making it in the shot played with my mind a little bit,” said Coffey.

Another near miss for F-P was sophomore Cayden Shelton getting boxed in on the 800 run and missing by one place of moving on. His time of 2:00.44 was only .04 away.

“The prospects are good for him next year,” Wagner said. “He wasn’t strong enough this year, but next year we’ll have him run the 800/1,600 double.”

Mason Barr of Colfax-Ridgeview dominated that 110 hurdles with a 14.12 clocking, but Soltow’s 15.34 was seventh best. Phillips needed a final attempt to hit a PR of 42-7, after scratching his first two triple jumps.

“I’m not going to lie. There were some prayers going on after those two scratches,” said Phillips, who scratched on all three discus attempts.

Christensen also qualified in the pole vault as a No. 28 seed, but was did not compete in that event to concentrate on the three relays. The junior is part of a nucleus for next season that Wagner has high hopes for.

“We’ll miss a lot with Brady, Cailean and Evan gone,” Wagner said. “Our prospects remain good. We have Jace, of course. Jordan Neuschwander didn’t get to run because of injury and he will only get better.

Cardinals fall to Wildcats at 1A sectional

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com River Ridge/Scales Mound kept putting runners in scoring position in a 1A sectional semifinal baseball game against Forreston on May 22.

They were finally rewarded in the bottom of the seventh inning.

An RBI single by Bennett Reese earned a 4-3 win. It was his third run batted in of the game and came from someone down in the order.

“We left guys on base all night, but were confident of getting a clutch hit,” RRSM coach Jeremy Knauer said. “It was the best high-school game I’ve been involved in seven years. It was great to watch.”

Forreston (24-8), had three home runs, but only one other hit. They also struck out 15 times against RR ace Tayden Patterson (7-1).

“Both teams had chances,” said Forreston coach Mike McClellan afterwards on radio station FM 102.1.

“They came up with the hit and we didn’t.”

On the first pitch of the game, Chase Greenfield tagged a Patterson pitch 350 feet for a home run. Patterson came into the game only giving up 13 runs all season.

Hayden Singley started for Forreston and hit a batter to start off, but was the recipient of a 6-4-3 double play to keep the score at 1-0.

Singley helped his own cause with a solo homer to lead off the second inning. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning.

Meanwhile, Patterson had retired the last four (6-7-8-9) Cardinal batters.

River Ridge loaded the bases in the third inning with clean-up hitter Jared Underwood up. At catcher, Greenfield caught a foul tip off Underwood’s bat to keep RRSM scoreless.

A key out in that inning was Braedon Fyock pivoting from his shortstop position to throw a runner out at third.

RRSM did get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on a RBI ground out by Reese, scoring Micah Knauer. At that point, Chase Greenfield took over on the mound for Singley.

Hunter Rogers made it to third after a walk, but was stranded to keep the score 2-1 after the top of the fifth.

For the fifth straight inning, RRSM’s lead-off hitter reached base.

Patterson tied the game 2-2 with a RBI double to right center.

• COLUMN of 2A. However, I contend that the area 1A softball sectional was just as tough as 2A. With powerhouse Rockridge as an opponent in the 2A super-sectional, it’s a different story, though.

Did you know that Forreston-Polo discus/shot coach Steve Christensen took third place at the AA state meet for Belvidere in the shot put. Like Jace Coffey, he would have been a smallish guy compared to the heavy-set crowd usually found in a shot put ring.

The last few years, I noticed some very bad discus and shot put technique. Unless you have a coach that really knows their stuff, even these large, football linemen-types are going to stink it up.

Of any sport, the IHSA track meet brings out the best in sportsmanship. That was apparent in observing the interaction between athletes from different races, ethnic make-up, school size and ability.

Another bit of trivia concerns the little town of Lexington. Mason Barr, who won both hurdle races and 24-foot long jumper Tate Walcott both hail from there.

Unfortunately, Walcott didn’t get to compete after breaking his leg in sectional warmups for the long jump in a freak accident.

The early favorite for the 1A state title has to be Morrison.

Their best runner, junior Keegan Anderson, was hurt and the Mustangs still finished near of the top of the standings. With everyone back from the state-placing 1,600 and 3,200 relays, including freshman Hunter Newman, who ran 1:55 in the open 800, Morrison will be loaded.

Finally, a round of applause to Polo lad Ryan Deets for the tremendous coaching job at Dixon in leading the Dukes to a fifthplace finish in 2A track. Fellow BNC mate Rockford Christian was fourth, as the conference was well represented.

The IHSA claims its “Spring Spectacular” meet to be the finest in the country and I agree. One of the most popular activities of the weekend takes place Friday night.

That is when the track is open to anyone and for $5 an entry, you can run various events. Far and away the most popular is the steeplechase, an event only college tracks can offer. There were 220 entrants; with the water jump the main selling point.

One of the highlights was watching Finnegan Schirmer of Marengo attempt to become the first Illinois schoolboy in the 125-year history of the meet to win the 110 and 300 hurdles and both sprints.

He was 3-for-3, but came up short on his final event, the 200 dash, on a hot and humid day. Nonetheless, that was an amazing accomplishment in brutal 2A competition by someone from a school not noted for track.

McClellan took Greenfield out and replaced him with Fyock.

RRSM loaded the bases and took the lead the first time at 3-2 on a single by Reese. They had two runs, three hits and 3 LOB in that inning.

For the third time in the game, it was a lead-off homer for Forreston, with Chase Greenfield doing the honors again. He took the first pitch by Patterson and sailed it near the leftfield pole where it stayed fair and 3-3 tie.

“Other than the home runs to Chase, I thought we did a nice job of keeping their top three batters off base,” Knauer said.

Fyock and Mitchell Heinz drew a pair of walks, but Patterson got Hunter Rogers looking on his 13th strikeout of the game.

“In the seventh, we needed to break through and score,” McClelland said.

The home runs we had were great boosts, but we didn’t put any pressure on them.”

Singley (10-2) came back onto the pitching mound in the seventh with two runners on base and one out. He struck out the first batter he faced.

A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. With a 2-2 count on Reese, Singley initially thought he had whiffed him.

“One pitch away,” McClellan said.

“I thought we might have had him on the 2-2 fast ball. It was a borderline call. That’s not why we lost. I thought the umpiring was outstanding tonight.”

Instead, Reese took the next pitch and lined it down the left-field line, scoring the winning run.

With Patterson nearing the end of his pitch count, McClellan was hoping the game went extra innings.

“If we could have only gotten back into the dugout and went to an eighth inning, I liked our chances,” he said.

RRSM had won 17 of their last 19 games. Forreston did beat them twice (12-1 and 11-4) in the regular season.

“Even after we got behind tonight, we were still playing our A game,” Knauer said. “In the other two games, we probably were playing at a D.” RRSM (21-8) defeated Sterling Newman in the sectional final, 4-2 on Saturday for its second sectional title.

The Wildcats fell to Elgin Harvest Christian Academy 3-1 at the Lisle Super-Sectional.

Oregon third grade students recently visited a beef and dairy farm. Thank you to Snodgrass Dairy and Nordman Feedlots for opening up their farms and sharing their farming experience with these students!

In order to prepare for their tours they learned more about beef and dairy cows. To find out more about dairy cows students discovered how cheese is made.

They heated milk, added rennet, and lemon juice. The acidic nature of the lemon juice caused curds to form.

Along with curds there was a liquid called whey. The curds and whey were separated.

The curds were put in the refrigerator for students to try once they cooled.

This activity was used to demonstrate the practice at a cheese factory. At the factory milk is pasteurized, a starter culAfter ture and rennet is added. the curds form, the whey is separated.

The whey is shipped to other food processors and used in candy, ice cream,

and bakery goods.

The cheese is cut into small pieces, and put into a mixer filled with hot water.

The cheese melts into a big mound.

The blocks of cheese are put into forms to cool. They look like loaves of bread.

Finally they are put into a salt brine bath.

Agriculture in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society.

Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them— on their plate, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well, and in earth-friendly fuels and plastics.

Ag in the Classroom is offered through the University of Illinois Extension in partnership with Ogle County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Soil & Water, and Ogle County Soil & Water.

A courtroom is not a place where you expect to find scenes of celebration and tears of joy. Unless, of course, it is drug court.

During the month of May, Ogle County New Horizon’s Specialty Court is joining more than 3,000 such programs nationwide in celebrating National Drug Court Month.

In 2019 alone, more than 150,000 individuals nationwide who entered the justice system due to addiction will receive life-saving treatment and the chance to repair their lives, reconnect with their families and find long-term recovery.

National Drug Court Month is not only a celebration of the lives restored by drug court, it also sends the powerful message that these programs must be expanded to reach more people in need.

Specialty Court team to present at conference The Ogle County Specialty Courts team has been selected as presenters at RISE19, the National Association of Drug Court Professional’s annual training conference July 14-17 in National Harbor, Maryland.

Specialty Court team members include Judge John B. Roe IV and Judge Clayton Lindsey, Specialty Courts presiding judges; Eric Morrow, state’s attorney; Justyna Palasiewicz, assistant state’s attorney; Brian VanVickle, sheriff; Kathleen Isley and Dennis Riley, public defenders; Kevin Buss, treatment provider from Sinnissippi

Centers; Dr. Yemi Fatoki, M.D.; Brigette Beckman, Brian Peterson, and Stacy Noble, probation officers; Lt. Jason Lynn; and Brooke Plachno, Specialty Courts coordinator.

NADCP receives hundreds of high quality proposals from across the nation, most of which they are unable to accept, making it an accomplishment and honor to be chosen.

The presentation is on Rural Problem-Solving Courts: Establishing, Sustaining, and Collaborating.

Rural problem-solving courts are proving to be a

necessary initiative across the nation, with many more challenges than urban-suburban settings.

The interactive session will look at how Ogle County brought stakeholders to the table to begin a specialty court, how the transition of nearly all team members’ roles has affected the program, maintaining an efficient program, and expanding the program to include an additional track.

The panelists include the founding team members, along with new team members, who will share specific challenges, strengths and solutions that work in the rural setting.

May 22 Jose Barraza, 21, of Ashton, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Barraza posted the $3,000 (10%) bond and was released with a return court date of June 10.

Kenny graduated from Polo Community High School in 1949, and was initially employed as a welder for Central Quality Industries.

Kenneth married the former Florella Kline on Dec. 6, 1969 at the Evangelical

War Veterans Association.

Kenneth loved his gardens and the many flowers he nurtured to life. During his last days these brought him much joy.

This man loved life to its fullest, every single day.

Survivors include his wife, Florella, of Marysville, Kansas; two sons, Randy Bender, of Mountain House, California, and David Bender, of Lake Havasu, Arizona; a daughter, Joanne, of Tacoma, Washington; and

two brothers, Leonard (Connie), of Morrison, and Sid (Shirley), of Barabou, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Erma Jean Bender.

Graveside memorial services with military honors will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at Fairmount Cemetery, Polo.

Sentencings Steven F. Brothers, 35, Plymouth, pleaded guilty on May 20 to possession of a controlled substance.

Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to 24 months drug probation without a conviction, and ordered him to complete 30 hours public service work, and pay fines and costs of $2,782.

Eric J. Reyes, 23, Byron, pleaded guilty on May 20 to domestic battery. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to two days in jail and ordered him to pay fines and costs of $1,000. Two counts of domestic battery were dismissed pursuant to plea agreement.

Gilberto Nieves, 32, Rochelle, pleaded guilty on May 21 to unlawful use of a weapon. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to serve 180 days in jail to be remitted upon successful completion of 24 months probation.

Hanosn also ordered him to submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, have no contact with the victims, and pay total fines and costs of $1,788.

Nieves also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. Hanson sentenced him to serve 180 days in jail to be remitted upon successful completion of 24 months probation, and ordered him to submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as rec-
