Seniors, teacher roast Heinz over 2018 comment

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A recurring theme kept popping up in the speeches given Sunday afternoon at Forreston High School graduation.

Science teacher and baseball coach Michael McClellan brought it up first.

He recalled that a year ago at graduation, principal Travis Heinz called the Class of 2018 “the best class ever” in the school’s history.

Since then, McClellan said he had given lots of thought as to what it takes to be “the best class ever,” concluding that humbleness, honesty, and helpfulness are required.

To demonstrate that the Class of 2019 met those requirements, he asked the audience to stand if they had ever witnessed anyone in the class displaying those qualities. Everyone stood.

He then asked members of the class to stand if they had ever been a servant leader, community volunteer, helped at home, held a job, or met with success in academics, sports, or other school activities.

They all stood.

McClellan praised the leadership abilities of the class, its love for others, and its accomplishments, and then gave his conclusion.

“I dub you, the Class of 2019, as the best class ever,” he said. “If you’re truly the best class ever, you will continue your humbleness, honesty, and helpfulness. You will continue to learn, you will continue to love, you will continue to lead.”

Valedictorian Mark DeWall continued the good-natured roasting of Heinz.

He focused on the unity of the class and their caring attitude for each other, calling them his “family” and jokingly referred to Heinz as “Pops.”

He touched on the death of classmate Drew Crase in a car accident in November of 2017 and how his classmates supported each other though the loss.

Every senior wore a blue cord to honor and remember Crase.

“I’m reminded every day how I can see the fingerprints of God on each and every one of you,” he said.

Heinz finally got his turn, recalling that “each and every day” for the last year, he has been reminded about his “best class ever” remarks.

“I admit I might have misspoken. I apologize….now get over it,” he said with a grin. “The Class of 2019 has had one of the best senior years in the history of Forreston High School.”

He recounted their accomplishments:

a football state championship; regional championships in volleyball, boys basketball, softball and baseball; third place in the state music sweepstakes award for the band and choir; awards in several regional art shows; state qualifying FFA teams; and top 10 percent in the state for academic achievements.

“That has never happened before,” Heinz said. “Why did this happen?

They’re competitive.”

He offered advice to the 53 members of the class, which included his own son Mitchell.

“Commit to the journey, not the outcome,” he said. “Journeys are about relationships. This class will be remem-

bered more for its relationships than its accomplishments.”

Superintendent Sheri Smith said the class has earned a total of $575,000 in scholarships - a new school record.

“I think this illustrates this class’ commitment to academic excellence as well as service to the school and community,” she said.

Smith presented medallions to the six seniors with the top grade point averages in the class: DeWall with a 4.17 on a 4.0 scale, co-salutatorians Bailey Brooks and Jacqueline Ludwig, each with a 4.11, Aaron Wubbena with a 4.09, and Grace Carr and Rachel Metzger, each with a 4.07.

Cruthis to retire after 20 years in Public Works Longtime Forreston Public Works Superintendent Alan Cruthis has just a week to go on the job.

He will retire May 31 after 20 years of working for the village.

Cruthis, who will be 67 the following day, has been working with water and sewer systems for 40 years.

“I got into it and I just stayed with it,” he said.

He said he has enjoyed living and working in Forreston.

“I’ve got good people [on the village board] to work with so we can get things done,” he said. “I’ve got a good crew, and I like the small community.”

“In the last 20 years we’ve made a lot of improvements. We’ve got a new sewer system now and new infrastructure,” Cruthis said. “Water system improvements are also in the works.”

Public Works Department employee Mark Rust will replace him as superintendent.

Cruthis and his wife plan to retire to Florida, where they have purchased a home. They plan to move there in mid-June.

Truck and tractor pulls highlight LR Summer Daze The Forreston FFA Alumni will once again host its truck and tractor pull on Saturday, June 1 during Leaf River Summer Daze.

The pulls begin at noon, and will

feature classes for antique tractors, farm tractors, trucks, and Badger State Pullers.

The entry fee for pullers is $25 per hook, and all-day spectator admis-

sion is $10, with kids 6 and under getting in free.

This event is a fundraiser for the FFA Alumni, and it helps to support their organization as well as the For-

reston High School FFA Chapter.

In addition to the pulls, a tractor rodeo is planned at 6 p.m. on Friday,

FREE EYE EXAMS FOR KIDS

Lions offer vision screenings during LR festival The Leaf River Lions Club in conjunction with the Lions of Illinois Foundation will provide free vision screenings for children age 6 months to 6 year of age on Saturday, June 1, during Leaf River Summer Daze.

The screenings will be done inside the Bertolet Memorial Library starting at 10 a.m.

The Lions have collaborated with Plusoptix to use the Plusoptix S12C camera.

The screening will be done by a Lions Club member trained on how to operate and interpret the camera.

Young children who may not be

able to express their vision problems or who do not know they have them can end up compensating so well that their parents do not realize there is a problem.

Early detection is the vital key when it comes to vision.

Parental consent is required for the screening, and paperwork must be filled out.

The screening will give participants either a “pass” or “refer” result providing parents an indication of whether or not the child needs further vision testing by an eye care professional.

Screenings do not take the place of an exam given by an eye care professional.

So how does this work?

No physical contact with child is made, and no eye drops needed.

Children are screened from approximately three feet away and need to look at the camera for only a few seconds. Results are produced in seconds.

What does it screen for?

Results are only a “pass” or “refer” detection for the following: • hyperopia (farsightedness), • myopia (nearsightedness),

• astigmatism (blurred vision), • anisometropia (unequal refractive power), • anisocoria (unequal pupil size), • strabismus (eye misalignment), • media opacities (e.g. cataracts or corneal scars), • amblyopia (lazy eye).

The Lions do th e screenings in various communities to help diagnose eye problems in young children.

In 1925 Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade Against Blindness,” which is still the Lions’ goal.

The three-day Leaf River Summer Daze will kickoff Friday, May 31 with an Antique Tractor and Engine Show along with a tractor rodeo at 6 p.m. at the field behind the River Valley Complex.

Numerous food booths will be open, as well as the Lions stand serving hamburgers, hot dogs and bratwurst sandwiches.

The Grass Attack bluegrass band will play from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Central States Fireworks will provide the fireworks show at dusk.

The festival will continue on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.

Saturday will begin with the Leaf River Firemen offering a breakfast at the River Valley Complex from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The Leaf River Historical Museum will have several things going on during the day so plan to stop in and see what’s happening.

The Lions Car Show begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. in the parking lot south of the Bertolet Memorial Library.

The various food booths also begin their day at 10 a.m.

The Merry Martha Club will again have a quilt raffle.

The Antique Tractor and Engine show resumes on Saturday, as well as a Cornbag Tournament.

The Leaf River Firemen will hold water fights on Second Street in front of the Bertolet Memorial Building.

Free kids games and barrel rides begin at 10 a.m., along with a Bounce House and slide at the Bertolet Memorial Library.

The Leaf River Lions will hold a free vision screening for kids 6 months to 6-year-old, starting at 10 a.m. inside the Bertolet Memorial Library.

A Tractor Pull begins on Saturday afternoon several levels of competition.

The Badger State Tractor Pulls begin at 7 p.m.

An admission fee is charged for the pulls.

LR Museum to hold several events at Summer Daze The Leaf River Museum will hold its annual fundraiser during Leaf River Summer Daze.

The museum will be open on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday,

June 2 from 12 to 4 p.m.

A bake sale inside the museum will feature pies, cakes, cookies, and snacks.

Buy chances for the quilt raffle and numerous silent auction items.

Outdoors activities include crafts, a tug-of-war contest over a mud pit, a greased pig contest, and a pie eating contest for all ages.

The Mt. Morris Moose food truck will be there to serve meals and

be sure to get some homemade ice cream.

The fundraiser to help pay gas bills and maintenance fees for the museum building.

E.D. Etnyre a presenting sponsor for park district The Oregon Park District has announced that E.D. Etnyre & Co. is an Oregon Park District Presenting Sponsor.

The park district completed its comprehensive plan in 2017 and throughout this process the community identified their interest in additional free programming in a less structured environment.

The recreation department introduced several new and free program opportunities in 2018 with much success.

As a result, the park district was looking to expand, but was unable to continue to fund the opportunities without assistance as a result of a reduction in the nuclear plant property tax assessment and the significant impact a minimum wage hike will have on the district’s overall budgets.

“The Oregon Park District is always looking for ways to provide opportunities for the community,” said Erin Folk, executive director.

“In the summer of 2018 we began offering several free programs in our parks. After the success of these programs we began looking for a local business that would partner to expand upon these offerings to the community.

The Hunt Club in Oregon recently hosted a fundraiser for The Serenity Shed and raised more than $1,500.

The event was the brain child of Jody Wubbena and Destini Benesh who helped guest bartend at the event.

After proposing the idea for the fundraiser to The Hunt Club, the owners of the bar and restaurant jumped behind the idea and helped Wubbena and Benesh provide piñatas, food and drink specials, raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

“I just can’t thank these girls and The Hunt Club enough,” said Cathy Warren, manager of The Shed.

Master Gardener Plant Sale is June 8 in Oregon University of Illinois Extension Ogle County Master Gardeners will hold their plant sale on the Ogle County Courthouse lawn in Oregon on Saturday, June 8.

The sale will be held during the Oregon Park District’s Farmers Market, located at Illinois 64 and Illinois. 2 in Oregon.

The market will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Master Gardeners’ will have their

favorite plants that they hand selected from their home gardens for sale.

“You are sure to find something to enhance your garden or landscape,” said Elizabeth Sosa, Extension program coordinator. “Expect great prices and arrive early for the best selection!”

Master Gardeners will be available on site to answer questions about plants, gardening, and lawn care.

In their 29th year of ministry, the well-known, and very popular gospel quartet “The Assemblymen” will appear on Friday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at Franklin Grove’s historic H.I. Lincoln building.

Their combination of gospel music and Gospel ministry is legendary on the northern Illinois music scene.

The multi-talented group includes soundman John Tallecksen, who also sings with the group Professions of Faith; baritone Paul Nelson, who doubles as tour bus driver in traveling to events; lead singer Gary Shull, who also does double duty with the Professions of Faith; high tenor David Nelson, who is also one of the founders 29 years ago.

He registered and raced the first time in 2012 and has not looked back since.

In 2015 he finished the race in under 50 hours and has done so every year since along with several top 5 and top 10 finishes.

He has also completed the South Dakota Kayak Challenge, the Missouri Freedom Race, the Des Plaines River Marathon, the Callie Rohr and the Wisconsin River Race among other events.

His interest in the Rock River stems from training on the Rock from County MM outside Ashippun to Watertown, Wisconsin.

It was post-season heartbreak again for the Forreston softball team.

For the second year in a row, they had a lead going into the final inning, only to see it fade away.

Trailing 7-6 in the 1A sectional semifinal at Durand, Eastland scored 6 runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 12-10 win on Tuesday.

In a game with a combined 27 hits and 19 runners left on base, the two teams went back and forth with a thrill a minute.

“I couldn’t of asked for anything more,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “We fought tooth and nail to

get back, all seven innings.”

Eastland got off to a 2-0 lead to start the game. Emma Norton drew a walk and reached second. Jenna Green, who had a grand slam in the regional, was intentionally walked.

Meredith Jansenn had an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt sent Green home and it was 2-0. Brycelynn Smith caught a tricky infield fly to end the inning, as the winds were gusting at Durand.

In the bottom of the first, Kara Erdmann walked and was advanced to third on a Smith bunt. A Taylor Greenfield single to left field scored Erdmann.

After both runners stole bases, an Erin Henze single brought them in with a single up the middle. Paityn Broshous got Erdmann out of the inning with a nice outfield catch for the final out.

“It felt good to get on top, but I knew it wouldn’t be enough,” Eastland coach Kaeli Eich said. “Forreston’s really tough. We knew they would hit the ball hard.”

In a wild and weird second for the Cardinals, they batted the cycle and tied the game.

Norton walked the first two batters and was replaced by Addison Burkholder. She retired the first batter she faced and looked to have out number two by striking out Erdmann.

However, the final strike was ruled an illegal pitch and Erdmann got new life at the plate. She was walked, loading the bases with only one out.

Burkholder made an acrobatic play from the mound to force an out at home. Hoping to get out of the inning unscathed, Eastland third baseman Gabby Snyder had a grounder come to her that looked like another force out.

But, the speedy Erdmann beat her to the bag, leading to a run scored.

Greenfield then tacked on her third RBI of the game with a rocket shot to left center for the 4-4 tie.

“Taylor came up big for us the

whole game,” Snider said.

Erdmann gave up a pair of singles in the third inning, but neither runner was able to score. The Cardinals went 3-up and 3-down in their half of the inning, as the score stayed 4-4.

Eastland started the fourth inning hot with two well-struck balls by Dambman and Norton. With second and third occupied and the No. 2-3-4 hitters up, Henze responded with a blooping single that brought in two runs and a 6-4 lead.

Snider decided to make a pitching change and Sam Greenfield was brought in.

“They were starting to hit the ball,” Snider said. “Sam’s a junk ball pitcher and we thought we’d catch them off guard. Coming in, I knew we would need both our pitchers.”

Her first pitch hit a batter. Henze then made a costly mistake by being thrown out at second after Houston caught a routine fly ball. Greenfield hit another batter, but Eastland could not capitalize after Houston’s double play and a fly out to Kaylee Kloster.

In Forreston’s side of the fourth, they had a tantalizing situation with runners on second and third and the hot-hitting Greenfield at bat. However, she was called out on strikes.

It was the next batter, Houston, that got the job done with a 2-out single that drove in Erdmann and

Oregon’s Mennen sets new record in the pole vault

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With Rockford Christian bumped up to 2A and perennial sectional contenders Byron, Oregon and Winnebago in down cycles, Forreston-Polo’s decisive 1A sectional win on May 17 was yet another demonstration of the program’s emergence as the top small school in northern

Illinois.

Sending 13 events downstate and scoring 127 points to 74 for second-place Lena-Winslow, F-P earned in second sectional title in three years, to go along with a runner-up to Rockford Christian last year.

“We’re fortunate to have some really good athletes,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “An example of that is Jordan Neuschwander gets hurt (hamstring) and we have to pull him. He would have won the 200, but we are able plug other guys in the relays for him.”

In Neuschwander’s absence, Cailean Davids filled in on the 4 X 100-meter relay. Running with Dom Christensen, Evan Kelsey and

Brady Webb, F-P won at 43.48. They also took the 4 X 200 relay at 1:31.94.

“It wasn’t pretty throwing it together like that, but it worked,” Kelsey said.

What excited Wagner and his team most was the 3:27.6 in the 4 X 400 relay, besting a 3:30 seed and leading three other squads to qualifying times. It was Davids, Cayden Shelton, Kelsey and Christensen taking F-P’s third relay crown.

“I’m speechless,” Wagner said.

“We’ve been talking about doing 3:27 all year.”

F-P picked up plenty of points in the throws with Jace Coffey (156feet-10) and Ethan Phillips (141-3) making state in the discus and Cof-

fey (48-4) and Garett Badertscher (48-8) doing the same in the shot put.

The team got a big surprise upon implement weigh-in when it was discovered their shot was a pound and half over weight.

“We’ve been throwing a heavier shot all year and didn’t even know it,” F-P throwing coaching Steve Christensen said. “Maybe that helped us today. Thankfully, Oregon let us borrow theirs.”

Coffey threw 20 inches over his previous best in the shot and Badertscher also had a PR. Phillips had the rare double of a triple jump (41-7) and throwing event qualification

“Like Larry the Enticer says, ‘I’m just going to send it’,” Phillips said.

With some help from Dixon high school, Webb hit 22-1 for a season-best in the long jump and third straight sectional title.

“I’ve had some (mechanics) problems, so I went to Dixon to see my old jumping coach (Ryan) Deets,” said Webb, who also won the 100 at 11.17. “Him and JD Gieson fixed everything. Now, it’s time to get ready for state.”

F-P got plenty of other firsts, with sophomores Bennet Soltow and Shelton showing promise for the future.

Soltow ran 15.71 to win the 110 hurdles, giving F-P its fourth straight 110 sectional hurdle title.

He also took fourth in the 300s. Shelton came from behind to win his

specialty, the 800 in a time of 1:59, his first time under 2 minutes.

Christensen also took second at 11-3 to qualify in the pole vault, but will likely by concentrating all his effort downstate on the three relays.

Other non-qualifying placers for F-P were Kelsey fourth in the 100, Anthony Josephitis sixth in the pole vault and Caleb Scott, Draven Wells, Quincy Williams and Shelton claiming fourth in the 3,200 relay.

In the vault competition contested Wednesday at Oregon, Jake Mennen of Oregon set a meet-record of 14-9.

Another Hawk vaulter, Ethan Gale (2009) had the previous record of 14-3.

“This year has been the most fun and least nerve-wracking,” said Mennen, who is headed downstate for the third straight year. “Its very stress-relieving knowing God is in charge.

When pole vaulting, I try to use the abilities He has given me to glorify Him.”

By the narrowest of margins, the 4 X 100 relay team of Dre Smith, Calvin Smith, Jackson Buck and Brigham Finch kept Oregon coach’s Jim Spratt 18-year record of sending at least one relay downstate. The foursome took third with a 44.34 with 44.38 the qualifying mark.

“It’s been a tough year for us, but I always had a inkling maybe one of our sprint relays could make it,” Spratt said. “I can’t tell you how gratifying it is see that group make it, especially with three seniors.

Even more surprising was the same group bettering their No. 4 seed by three seconds to finish second (1:32.55) in the 4 X 200 relay.

“Since the conference, coach changed handoffs,” Buck said.

“Since Calvin is the fastest, he had him run a bit longer than anyone else.”

In a very close race for the automatic second, It was first-year runner Finch sprinting past Len-Win on the anchor to edge the Panthers, who still advanced on time with a 1:32.63.

“We ran unbelievable splits, with

Calvin in the 22s and everyone else in the 23s,” Spratt said. “It’s a testament to the kids manning up and doing the work. Finchie came around the curve and really turned it on.”

Bobby Youngren rebounded from not throwing 140 feet in over a week to claim a discus qualification with a throw of 143-3 for Oregon.

“One thing that helps here is the brotherhood of different guys. We’ve gotten close to Forreston-Polo,” said Youngren, as F-P’s Coffey could be seen chest bumping all the throwers from other schools.

Oregon placed sixth as a team with 46 points.

“Other than Sully not going down in the 200 (third place, 23.24), we couldn’t have projected this better,” Spratt said.

Nathaniel Schone missed by one spot of making it in the vault with a third place, Andrew Harshman picked up a fifth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600, Austin Ebert was sixth in both hurdle races and Carson Sweeney was sixth in the shot put.

Track team could be a trophy contender at state

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With the 1A boys state track and field championship as wide open as it has ever been, Forreston-Polo will be considered a trophy contender.

F-P has the potential to place in several events.

Leading the way is a 1,600-meter relay that is seeded No. 2 to Morrison. With title possibilities in the 3,200 relay and open 400, Morrison is another favorite.

“It’s hard to say with sectional seedings,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “It can be deceiving with the weather and if a coach is holding a kid back until the state meet.”

Wagner sees DuQuoin, Salt-Fork and Morrison as the teams to beat.

Other teams to watch out for is

Rushville-Industry, Pleasant Plains, and Gibson City, with freshman phenom Aidan Laughery.

Defending champ Colfax-Ridgeview with stars Mason Barr and Tate Walcott had been favored, but Walcott was not listed as state qualifier in the any individual events.

“That’s surprising. He jumped 24 feet last year and is a very good 200 runner,” Wagner said.

His absence in the long jump may open to door for No. 3 seed Brady Webb (22-1). The top seed is at 22-10, a mark Webb is capable of hitting.

Jace Coffey is seed No. 4 at 156 feet, but like Wagner said, seeds can be deceiving, as Coffey’s best throw of the year is better than anything coming out of the sectionals.

The speed of pitches can make a big difference in the early stages of postseason softball play, and the Forreston Cardinals proved to the Polo Marcos that very feeling.

Freshman lefty Kara Erdmann had her way with the Marcos in an 8-0 win Friday to win the 1A Forreston Regional; she threw 50 of her first 59 pitches for strikes and struck out eight in the complete-game shutout.

The Cardinals (17-9) won their first regional championship since 2011. It also was a better outcome than last year’s regional final one-run loss against Dakota, a heartbreaker that ended with a walk-off two-run home run.

“It was a big deal for these kids to come out here, play well, and get it done,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “Last year we came short, so these kids were ready to play today.”

“It feels great to do something that we haven’t done in a long time,” Erdmann said.

With a chance to win its first regional championship in the program’s 3-year history, the Marcos couldn’t keep up with the heat against the hosts.

“The last four games we’ve seen a lot of slow pitchers, and then we go up against a faster pitcher and struggle,” Polo coach Deron Sellers said.

“We just didn’t hit the ball.”

Erdmann struck out five Marcos in the first three innings, and threw all strikes in the third inning; she threw strikes in 30 of her first 34 pitches.

“She played a heck of a game,” Snider said.

“I knew right when I was going to give the ball to her in the circle, she was going to get it done.

Wagner reached in the fourth when she barely beat out her sacrifice bunt attempt; she was initially called out, but it was overruled by the home plate umpire. With two on, Elizabeth Stamm hit a line drive back to Erdmann, who threw to double up Wagner to end the run with a double play.

Cassidy Gray, Zoie Sellers and Emily Boelens loaded the bases for the Marcos in the sixth, but Wagner hit into an infield fly and Stamm’s line drive to left center field was caught by a lunging Broshous.

Forreston broke the game open in its half of sixth with RBI singles by Haller and Jackie Ludwig, a two-RBI double from Smith, and a sacrifice fly from Erdmann.

“Our whole motto all year has been to finish games,” Snider said. “When we hit in the bottom of the sixth, it put us over the edge and gave us comfort defensively.”

“We got a rally going and it just felt great to come out on top,” Erdmann said.

Three of those runs were unearned.

“Defensively, they played pretty well up until the sixth inning,” Sellers said.

Polo had four underclassmen in its lineup along with five seniors. Sellers thinks he’ll have a team that can crack double-digits in wins next year.

“I’m proud of the kids,” he said. “They had a good season. We’re a very young team, and have a lot to grow on for next year.”

Forreston beats Amboy to advance to sectional Cardinals take care of business at Warnken field

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com The last time Amboy came to Warnken Park, the result was an 8-3 Clipper win over Forreston in baseball on April 8. Amboy made a return trip on May 18, but with much more at stake.

Forreston, which avenged the April loss with a narrow 6-5 win on April 24, beat Amboy to win the 1A regional title, 4-2 at home.

It was Forreston’s (24-7) fourth regional title in five years.

“We knew coming in it was not going to be an easy game,” Forreston coach Mike McClellan said. “It wasn’t a true No. 1 versus No. 4 matchup,” The game couldn’t have started any better for the Cardinals with a bases-loaded situation and no outs.

Chase Greenfield led off with a single. Ethan Greenfield attempted to sacrifice bunt Chase to second, but got a bonus out of the attempt.

As the ball came into the first baseman, Ethan ran into it and the ball popped out of the glove. Since he was in the base path, the umpire ruled he did not interfere and he was given the base.

No. 3 hitter Braeden Fyock also attempted a sac-bunt and Amboy had confusion between the third baseman and pitcher on fielding it. The end result was the bases loaded.

Hayden Singley hit a grounder to third that brought Chase home and Ethan would score on a walk given to Jacob Swanson.

Ethan Greenfield was the recipient of another pitching error in the third inning. He scored from third base on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. He wasn’t done either.

Giving Forreston a 4-0 lead in the fifth, he scored on a double steal.

With one out, Amboy opted to throw Fyock out at second instead of holding Ethan Greenfield at third. Greenfield took advantage of the decision and raced home for his third run of the game.

“He had quite a game with three runs and two hits,” McClellan said.

“Those were two very good pitchers Amboy had in (Hunter) Zimmerly and (Mitchell) McLaughlin.”

They held Forreston to six hits.

“Offensively, neither team did a lot, other than Ethan,” McClellan said.

Singley (10-1) started on the mound for Forreston and pitched six scoreless innings, only allowing three hits and one walk.

“It was his best outing of the year,” McClellan said. “He was ahead in the count all day and only needed 68 pitches.”

Singley was also helped by some stellar defense in the fourth inning.

Zimmerly hit a bullet up the middle that Dylan Greenfield was able

to field and turn a double play by touching second base and throwing to first.

“He was in the right place at the right time,” McClellan said.

From his center field position, Rogers made the play of the game by stealing a double or triple from McLaughlin with a catch into the fence.

Rogers followed that up in the sixth inning with another diving grab.

Fyock came in relief in the seventh and got into a jam.

McLaughlin was hit by a pitch.

The next batter singled. A dropped fly ball to right field then scored one run. After a single scored another to make it 4-2, Fyock struck out the last batter to advance Forreston to the sectional.

Polo threatened in the top of the first inning of the 1A Eastland Regional semifinal against Newman on May 15, but Newman starter Elias Henkel worked his way out of the jam with no trouble.

Newman threatened in its half of the first, and were able to get runs on the board, a difference that came up big as the Comets held on for a 5-3 win.

Three batters into the game, things were looking rough for Henkel as Lucas Hammond reached on an error, Justin Young doubled into the gap in right-center, and Cole Faivre drew a walk to load the bases.

But Henkel (2-1) struck out Tucker Mumford, Ramsey Shroyer and Brady Clark. Though it took him 27 pitches, he got out of the first inning with no runs on the board.

A solid as Henkel was on the mound, Shroyer nearly matched him on the hill for the Marcos.

He pitched a complete game, striking out nine and issuing just one walk. He needed 30 pitches to get through the third inning, the only inning in which he threw more than 16.

Shroyer (5-4) was especially effective against the bottom half of the Comets’ lineup. While the top four

hitters – Olson, Behrens, Chase Graham and Bartel – were a collective 7-for-10 at the plate, scoring five runs and driving in five runs, the bottom five in Newman’s order went 0-for-14 with eight strikeouts and a double play.

“Ramsey’s a great pitcher,” said Young, Polo’s catcher. “He’s got a lot of gas and a good curveball. He’s a great pitcher.”

With Shroyer’s pitching keeping them close, the Marcos were able to threaten in the sixth. Gavin Zell reached on an error and Braiden Soltow drew a two-out walk. Henkel, having reached his pitching limit, was pulled in favor of Behrens, who allowed a single to Hammond and a single up the middle to Young, driving in a pair of runs.

“I was just trying to keep us going and get some runs in,” Young said.

Young went 4-for-4 on the day with two RBIs. “He’s a senior. He didn’t want to be done,” Polo coach Jeff Sands said.

“He’s been a stud for the last 3 years, and he showed up on the big stage and came up big and did just what Justin does. All of our seniors went out with nothing to hang their heads about. They went out very strong and battling.”

Polo (9-9) managed six hits in the game, but stranded nine runners.

“Hats off the (Eastland). They totally knew how to play it,” Snider said.

Houston made another nice defensive play from shortstop to force an out at third.

It was three runs on four hits for the Cardinals as the game continued to be give-and-take between the two squads.

Greenfield shut down the Cougars in the top of the fifth, maintaining the slim Forreston lead.

Norton came back in to pitch for Eastland and held the Cardinals scoreless for that inning.

Forreston got a couple breaks in the top of the sixth after a shaky start. Henze singled and Green was intentionally walked. Chloe Waller was brought in to pinch-run for Henze and made the mistake of trying to score off a bobbled ball.

Smith threw home to catcher Mackenzie Schreiber, who tagged Waller out at home. Then Taylor Greenfield caught a hard liner for a double play.

“We’re that kind of a team – we knew the bottom of the order would roll over for the top,” Snider said.

It was a total team effort. Everyone had a part.”

For the second time, Burkholder replaced Norton on the mound and immediately struck out designated hitter Naya Haller.

Erdmann was intentionally walked, reaching base for the fifth time. Smith whacked a ball into the outfield for an RBI, loading the bases with one out.

Kloster fouled out, but Taylor Greenfield singled up the middle to make it 12-10. It was her fifth RBI. Houston hit a ball to short right field and Henze grabbed it to end the high-scoring affair. Two runners were left on base.

Eastland, which beat Forreston 15-6 in the second week of the season in the same type of weather of this game, moves to 25-7 and will face Orangeville for the sectional title on Friday.

Forreston finishes at 17-10 and returns most of its lineup.

“I told our kids we need to keep pushing forward. They know what it’s like to win a regional and play in the sectional,” Snider said. “We will miss our two seniors (Jackie Ludwig, Sam Greenfield), but I am positive for next year.”

800 champ Riley Wells of Rockford Christian in 2A, the chance for a state title got much easier. With a No. 9 seed, it is possible Bennett Soltow could make the finals of the 110 hurdles.

Don’t count out the Oregon 800 relay, which struggled all season until it counted the most. It is a No. 10 seed among 33 entrants.

Pole vaulter Jake Mennen is No. 4, behind three top notch seniors ranging from 15 to 16 feet in what is always a brutally tough 1A event.

In looking at all three IHSA classes, Mennen’s 14-9 sectional mark would be No. 8 overall.

Last year, Ian Hussung brought back Oregon only points, medaling in both the 800 and 1,600.

Plenty to talk about this spring sports season Too much going on in boys and girls spring sports for adequate commentary, but we’ll try.

Congrats to Oregon girls soccer for a trip to the sectional finals. Talk about surpassing expectations as a 3-year old program.

By the same token, the Hawks met expectations as a legitimate No. 2 sub-sectional seed, virtually equal with Byron and Rockford Lutheran, two teams they beat in overtime on their way to the sectional final.

Stillman Valley proved to be the class of the sectional and at a level that Oregon can seek to reach. One reason SV has won eight straight regionals is that no one has yet to push them. Maybe, Oregon can be that team.

Besides the physical abilities, Oregon demonstrated the mental toughness needed with the come-from-behind win over Byron and rebounding from the last minute goal by Lutheran in regulation to handle the Crusaders in the extra period.

It is the big bats getting it done on the way to a 17-9 record. In an 8-0 win over Polo in the regional final, Kara Erdmann’s pitching was a major factor.

Playing with basically a freshsoph roster, the Oregon softball team looks to improve on a 6-16 campaign. Signature wins were over Byron and Dixon.

Boys Track Sectional It is neat to see seniors get rewarded for all the hard work put in. That was the case for the Oregon boys track and field team at the sectionals.

Three senior sprinters in Jackson Buck, Calvin Sullivan and Brigham Finch had never qualified for the state meet before, but got it done Thursday at Lena-Winslow with freshman Dre Smith in the 400 and 800 relays. Likewise with senior Bobby Youngren in the shot put.

My favorite moment from the sectional took place the day before at the pole vault competition in Oregon. After the vaulters were given the final briefing from the meet officials, Jake Mennen gathered them together and led a prayer.

With so much emphasis on everything other than God when it comes to high-school sports, it was refreshing to witness the conviction Jake has for a spiritual way of living.

It is a fascinating exercise trying to come up with an answer to that with so many uncertainties at the IHSA state meet. Besides going up against athletes you haven’t seen all year, the validity of sectional seedings comes into play.

May 16 At 6:50 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the Oregon Laundromat parking lot, located at 210 S. 4th Street involving a 2012 Ford driven by Henry T. Tideman, 75, of Oregon, and a parked 2005 Dodge belonging to Alexander Maysonet, 23, of Oregon.

County case. A count of domestic battery was dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

Jourdan R. Mondragon, 42, Rockford, pleaded guilty May 8 to theft. Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with one year mandatory supervised release. The sentence will run concurrently with a sentence in a Boone County case.

Mondragon was also ordered to pay restitution of $1,000.

Andrew M. Robertson, 28, Oregon, pleaded guilty May 8 to aggravated

domestic battery. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to 63 days in jail and 36 months probation, and ordered him to submit to DNA testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as directed, have no contact with the victim and pay total fines and costs of $3,642.

The second pair of defendants accused of beating two men in Chana last month pleaded not guilty May 17 in Ogle County Court.

Rochelle attorney Russell Crull entered the pleas for Patrick Christenson, 27, of Chana, and Stephanie McGlinn, 27, of Byron, at a hearing before Judge John Redington.

The two, along with Amber Koeller, 26, Steven Dodson, 41, both of Chana, are charged with mob action, a Class 4 felony, in the April 20 incident.

All four were originally charged with battery, a misdemeanor, but the charges were later upgraded to mob action.

Redington set preliminary hearing for Christenson and McGlinn on Wednesday, June 5.

Koeller and Dodson appeared before Redington on May 10 and are set for preliminary hearings on May

According to a press release from Ogle County Sheriff Brian Van Vickle, the two victims were found at 10:45 p.m. at the scene of the battery near the intersection of Chana Road and Center Street.

They were provided with medical attention by Oregon EMS and were transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon.

The offenders had left the scene, but deputies located their vehicle and stopped it at 11:35 p.m. as it traveled south on Chana Road and turned onto Grist Mill Road.

Koeller and Dodson were arrested then, and deputies later located Christenson and McGlinn and arrested them.

Dodson, the driver the vehicle, was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He pleaded not guilty to that charge at the May 10 hearing.

May 13 Gregory Knuuttila, 40, of Cortland, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for improper use of registration.

He was held at the Ogle County Jail on a $15,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

May 14 Trei Sanders, 24, of Freeport, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies and Mt. Morris Police were called at 4:09 a.m. to an address on North Everett Street near Mt. Morris. Sanders was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident with an injury at 10:13 a.m. in the 5,000 block of East Illinois 64.

An SUV driven by Pamela Beecham, 54, of Mt. Morris, was eastbound when it traveled across the westbound lane and into the north side ditch before striking a tree.

Beecham was transported to Swedish American Hospital by Oregon EMS for minor injuries.

She was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

Thomas Price, 33, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of a$5,106.34 (full cash) bond pending a court appearance.

Joel Dach, 32, of Rockford, for was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for contempt of court. He has a full cash bond of $1,008 and is scheduled to appear in court on June 24.

Dewayne Harbach, 67, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

He appeared in court and was issued a $1,000 recognizance bond pending a court appearance.

Dominic Mireles, 36, Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He has a full cash bond of $883 pending a court appearance.

May 16 Brandon Cuddy, 25, of Rockford was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 3 a.m. in the 5,000 block of South Freeport Road.

He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Justin G. Mattson, 22, of Belvidere, was arrested for speeding and driving while license revoked after a traffic stop at 9:19 a.m. on Stubb Road at Tower Road. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he posted bond and was given a June court date.

May 15 Alisza Cremeans, 19, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 3:48 a.m. near the intersection of Illinois and Fifth Streets in Oregon.

The pedestrian, Brittany Vyas, 24, of Rock Falls, suffered minor injuries and was transported to KSB Hospital by Dixon Rural Ambulance.

Deputies located Dexter and arrested her for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, aggravated battery, and reckless driving.

She was held at the Ogle County Jail awaiting a court appearance.

OBITUARIES MARIAN I. BLUMEYER-BARRY Marian Ione Blumeyer-Barry, 96, of Oregon, died on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Franklin Grove Living & Rehab Center.

She was born on March 12, 1923 in Pine Rock Township, the daughter of John E. and Carrie (Canode) Schier.

She graduated from Oregon High School in 1941.

Marian married Alvin Blumeyer on July 9, 1943 in Love Field, Dallas, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She married Allen Barry on Aug. 18, 2004 in Oregon. He preceded her in

death on Oct. 24, 2013.

Marian worked for Kable News in Mt. Morris, then more than 20 years for NIU Lorado Taft Campus as a cook, and then for Tri-County Home Health Care.

She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Paynes Point, and the Oregon VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She loved to boot scoot line dance, and be in her garden.

She is survived by her daughter, Dixie

(Terry) Hurless, of Chandler, Arizona; two sons, Francis “Butch” (Bonnie) Blumeyer, of Oregon, and Ronald (Angie) Blumeyer, of Mt. Morris; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Lillian Guernsey, Anna Mae Fisher, Vera Milliman, Agnes Heller; brothers, Francis and Gene Schier, and infant brother

Robert.

Funeral service were held on May 21 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Paynes Point with the Rev. Andrew Kayes pastor of the church officiating.

Burial was at the church cemetery.

Arrangements were completed by Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. Seventh St., Oregon.

In lieu of flowers a memorial may be made in Marian’s name to the charity of choice.

She was born on May 23, 1939 to Gordon and Dorothy (Mumma) Swift.

Susan was employed as the village clerk in Forreston for many years.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston.

Susan lived her life around her family,

daycare service in her home and was a member of East Oregon Chapel of the Church of God. She enjoyed traveling to Florida, yard work, and cooking for and celebrating the holidays with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, James (Bobbie) Roberts, of Leaf River; daughter, Debra (George) Cox, of Mt. Morris; many grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; brother, Curt (Gloria) Ennenga, of Mt. Morris; and sisters, Mary (Dean)

Shook, of Davis Junction, Shirley (Roger) Unger, of Rochelle, and Katie Ennenga, of Oregon.

She was also predeceased by her parents; daughters, Gloria Pritchard and Barbara Davis; son, John “Huck” Clapper; grandchildren, Stephanie Bormes and Shelly Shelton; brothers, John and Roy Ennenga; infant siblings; and special friend, Jack Riegel.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at East Oregon Chapel, Church of God preceded by

especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are her two daughters, Lori (Kim) Peterson and Darcy (David) Metz; brother, Jim Swift; three grandchildren, Sarah Peterson, Aaron Metz, and Eli Metz; and five step-grandchildren, Justin (Sarah) Peterson, Matt (Niki) Peterson, Anthony (Steffanie) D’Agnolo, Adrianna“Dina” (Wayne) D’Agnolo and Amanda D’Agnolo.

Susan was preceded in death by her

brother, Jon Swift and sister, Shirley Swift.

Memorial services were held on May 17 at Faith Lutheran Church, Forreston, with Pastor Scott Ralston officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery, Forreston.
