cancel their Memorial Day services due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions placed on group gatherings.

Flags for Veterans will be placed at cemeteries honoring their service and sacrifice for our nation.

Gambles. I remember the July 1st fireworks at the high school. I remember consolidating with German Valley and Baileyville.

I remember Bob Dillavou as our 8th grade history teacher and advisor to school safety patrol as we let students across I-26 at the grade/middle school. I remember paper routes, mowing grass, raking leaves, and shoveling snow.

I remember walking beans in the fields for Phil’s Fresh Eggs and I remember working at Crest Foods in the early mornings and late evenings. I remember all my teachers and the coaches. I remember all my neighbors and friends.

Each of us carries these memories forward and shares them with our children. I certainly have with our son, Nicholas.

I want to thank the Koeller Hardware Store for selling the book and Kathy Pasch for her assistance in research for the book. This was a passion project and I have been delighted with the wonderful comments from the readers and the comments from the Fager extended family.

I said in the book and it is worth repeating – Forreston is the best town in America to raise a family. What the citizens did for Don and Evelyn Fager throughout their lives was incredible. They became the town’s first family, so they took care of them because Don

took care of them.

The town always made sure Don and Evelyn had fresh fruit and vegetable, fresh meat, canned goods, and someone always brought something from the garden for them. The town insured that they had a Christmas tree and decorations during the holidays.

If something needed fixing in their apartment and later in their trailer, it was taken care of by one of the town’s citizens. Churches supported them and boy scouts supported them. Don carried so much of Forreston’s history in his head.

This is what made Forreston then and what makes Forreston now. During the COVID 19 outbreak you are doing the same for one another. You are watching over each other, you take care of the kids, and you insure everyone has what they need.

The neighborhoods in Forreston are tight.

You know each other next door and down the block and you stay in touch with each other.

This is Forreston’s value and character and what will make Forreston stronger when businesses and schools reopen.

Thank you Forreston for “raising me” in such a great environment and creating such great memories!

OPINION Dunkel: Forreston best town in America to raise a family Dear Friends:

I grew up in Forreston through most of my junior year of high school in the early 1970s before my father was transferred to Ashton, Illinois.

Earlier this spring I wrote a book titled, Don’s Strength. It is a non-fiction about an 11-year-old boy in Forreston who sat for two hours every Saturday with Don Fager so his wife, Evelyn, could go to the grocery store and laundrymat.

Don answered Forreston’s 911 calls but he had multiple sclerosis and could not move from the neck down so the young boy would pick up the phone and hold it to Don’s ear and then take notes for Don. During those two years there were several 911 calls that were answered. Don also taught him many of life’s lessons during those two years. Those lessons are shared in the book. The young boy was me.

I remember like it was yesterday the shops in town, Lewis Dairy Bar, Akins Drug Store, D and L Grocery Store, Gambles, Smith Ford, and many others. I remember the fast pitch church league softball.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Board passed an amended budget at Tuesday meeting, and it may not be the last in its efforts to combat the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

County representatives say they are unsure of what the financial impacts will be due to limited information from the state so far and revenues like sales tax coming in at a 2-3 month lag.

Around 80 percent of the county’s general fund goes to employee salaries, but there hasn’t been any furloughs yet.

“We’re going to look at sales tax anywhere from 20-30 percent less compared to last year,” County Treasurer Linda Beck said. “We’re trying to move forward with the committee to do cutbacks. We haven’t had to furlough anyone. We will look at that to see if it’s needed.”

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department reported four new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, totaling 184.

Recoveries now stand at 123 after four were confirmed Tuesday. Ogle County has had two deaths due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Ages and locations of the individuals are not being released to protect their privacy.

An OCHD Facebook post said last week that reports now will only be done Monday through Friday, with weekend changes being in Monday’s report.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 119 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code, 61084, has seven cases in it according to the IDPH site. Byron’s zip code, 61010, has seven cases.

The zip codes that house Oregon (61061) and Mt. Morris (61054) have eight and seven cases, respectively.

Polo’s zip code, 61064, has nine cases in it.

departmental revenue,” Sparrow said. “Like fees, we’re not doing any courthouse business right now, so those will be off to some degree.”

There are potential programs at play that could help the county with a shortfall. At the federal level, congress is debating its next public act.

They may do something to assist state and local governments, Sparrow said.

The National Association of Counties has requested $29 billion from the federal government to assist counties to offset losses.

“That’s an additional $4.5 million for Ogle County if that passes and it could help next year,” Sparrow said.

The county is also hoping to get FEMA reimbursements for money lost since the start of the pandemic.

That was the thinking behind passing an emergency proclamation at a recent board meeting.

Sparrow said the county is in the same boat as small businesses, where it may have to lay people off because much of the budget is personnel.

“We need this for employees,” Spar-

row said. “The most important thing is we get the economy back. These three months will be an impact. If we get businesses back going into the final 3-6 months of the budget year, revenues will come back to some extent.”

Small Business Grants The board voted unanimously to approve a program to help businesses in unincorporated areas apply for Downstate Small Business Stabilization Grants through the state and county.

Chris Manheim made a presentation to the board and said there would be a $5,000 cap on the grants at no cost to the county.

“Two or three” businesses have inquired about the grants to combat COVID-19 business impacts. Cities like Oregon and Polo have helped their businesses with applying.

Information about applying will be distributed once the program is set up.

in revenue for the year in the general fund. Sales, income and property tax make that up.

With income and property tax due dates being pushed back, dispersal to taxing bodies will likely be delayed, but Beck expects to get those revenue streams in full. Property taxes make up around $4.5 million of the county budget.

“We will try to get that money to taxing bodies like schools when we can,” Beck said. “We’re trying to plan ahead because we know there will be a big drop from the state.”

Ogle County’s Finance Committee has been busy looking at the books since the pandemic began. Chairman Greg Sparrow said he’s not sure what the hit will be, but that a 15-20 percent loss is an “educated guess.”

Projects are in the long-range planning department, and Sparrow said they likely won’t be impacted by the pandemic, at least for now. Other revenues outside of taxes will be impacted.

“I can assure you in the next six months we will see reductions in

White Pines Resort closes due to pandemic Concessionaire at state park says she will file bankruptcy

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Beth George’s two children, Chad and Lindsey, grew up in her back office at White Pines Resort.

They watched TV while their mother worked. They worked different jobs at the resort as they got older.

Those are among George’s favorite memories of her 31 years as concessionaire at White Pines Resort.

On May 13, George, White Pines Resort owner and concessionaire , announced she is filing for bankruptcy and closing after 31 years due to losses of revenue from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resort operates March to December and consists of a restaurant, dinner theater, cabins and a gift shop.

The buildings that house the businesses are owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The lodge and cabins are located inside White Pines State Park.

George posted a video on Facebook to make the announcement and say goodbye.

“I want to just tell you that I never thought I’d be saying these words,” George said. “For 31 years I’ve run that resort and put my heart and soul into it. I’m going to be one of the statistics that don’t make it. I’m smart enough to know the numbers just won’t work to reopen.”

George, who grew up in Mt. Morris, said in the video that the Governor’s reopening plan that was unveiled last week was the “nail in the coffin” of her business.

The Facebook post was shared nearly 8,000 times and commented on nearly 2,000 times.

“The outpouring of support was totally and utterly overwhelming,” George said in an interview on May 14. “I’ve been blown away. It’s been very heartfelt and I’ve been having a hard time even looking at them.

Hundreds are from brides that were married there.”

George stopped counting weddings at 1,200 a few years ago. Her record for weddings in a year was 93.

She said she’ll be filing for bankruptcy in “a few weeks” after she

After her announcement, multiple GoFundMe pages emerged with hopes to save the resort. One had nearly $17,000 donated as of Tuesday afternoon.

But George said the resort can’t be saved, regardless of any amount raised. She would only use that money to pay back brides and guests she owes.

“I wouldn’t ever want that responsibility on my shoulders,” George said. “I don’t ask for handouts. If the state goes bankrupt, the parks will close. There’s just so much uncertainty. It was unbelievable to see people try. I don’t even know them. It’s magical at White Pines and that’s why the outpouring has been like that.”

White Pines Resort employs 40-55 seasonal employees, all of which will now be out of work.

George has been residing in Costa Rica with her two children who also have tourism-based businesses there.

She said she did apply for payroll protection through the federal CARES Act, but couldn’t use it due to not being open during the eight weeks it consisted of. All she ended up doing was incurring another loan.

Local municipalities like Oregon

and Polo have helped their small businesses with applying for loans through state and local programs.

White Pines Resort is located in unincorporated Ogle County who is in the process of starting a program to help businesses.

George said she never talked to the county about assistance and said she doesn’t deal with them much due to being located inside a state park.

She said she has $18,000-$20,000 in expenses per month, while closed.

She did notify the state and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources of her situation before making her decision to close.

“We reached out to the state and said we won’t be able to be there if we can’t open by June 1,” George said. “But they said there was nothing they could do. They did defer our rent. Us telling them that wasn’t a threat.”

The IDNR did purchase assets of the business like beds and restaurant equipment, which will make a future concessionaire taking over more likely, George said.

A new concessionaire won’t have to purchase expensive assets.

“They bought so much,” George said. “They’re only paying me dimes on the dollars of what I have, but it saves work for my staff moving and selling things.”

To become the next concessionaire, a person would have to apply to be on a bidders list for when the lease is eventually put out to bid by the state. George is unsure when that will happen, but believes it may be after the pandemic situation passes.

George nearly sold her lease to the resort last year. The family all but purchased it and decided after 10 weeks that it wasn’t for them.

“The financial impact of that was terrible for me,” George said. “It set me back a lot. I spent seven months training them.”

George has more fond memories than watching her kids grow up at White Pines. She built relationships.

One couple planned to come and stay this year for their 50th consecutive year. She loved starting the dinner theater at a time when most people thought the resort only did breakfast.

“I don’t do drugs, but nothing got me higher than watching an audience die laughing at a performance,” George said.

“Everything ends. I almost sold it last year. I just never thought it’d end like this.”

Few people like change and now with our country facing major issues of simple survival, we all feel very concerned. We want things back to normal!

We keep hearing the words “the new normal” which is definitely unsettling and leaves us wondering what this means. Then this week when we heard the news of the White Pines State Park Lodge closing many of us had to sit down and take a deep breath. I certainly had to do just that.

The White Pines State Park has been interwoven with many of our lives over a long period of time. We came to Polo in 1938. My father, Glenn Isley, was the new science teacher and he was quite an outdoors person.

Lamb purchased the Oregon Theatre in 1931 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Russell Lamb purchased the old theatre, which was called the Oregon Theatre.

Basically it was a store room, 22 feet wide which he opened in February 1931.

In those days sound did not come on the film.

They had sound on a record disk which Russell said wasn’t very successful.

In 1935 they changed over to sound on the film.

In 1940 Russell built the Oregon Theatre where the canopy exists today on North 4th Street.

Another theatre existed where the Village of Progress Bakery stands today and a third theatre was located on the third floor in the Union Building.

The ticket price was five cents and the movie lasted no longer than 30 minutes. When you went to the movies, you usually went to a couple of them each evening.

If you wanted to spend the whole evening you went to see three movies. That’s why they had so many movies even in small towns like Oregon.

The movies in those days came on three movie reels. First sound came from records and finally in 1935 sound was added to the movie reels. Russell said a short time later films lasted as long as two hours.

In the early 1930s most of the films ran two hours but some shows like Gone With The Wind ran for three hours and 45 minutes. Russell said he never ran any movie with off color sex.

He said they called these films the pink release because in Chicago, when you ran a movie that was off-color you obtained a pink seal to run it.

In those days the dominant movie company was Metro Movie Mayer. They had their own

The Pines became our deck and a fireplace our grill. When did we start into outdoor cooking at our homes? Anyone remember?

When us kids needed a serious discussion with our father, it was back out to the Pines on a picnic table.

We talked things out in the solitude of the outdoors listening to the birds in the background. It ended up a soothing experience always to be remembered.

When I needed my first real job, I went to the White Pines Lodge and John Maxson hired me for the summer of 1949. I remember his family well. Mrs. Maxson was a very quiet, dignified, elegant person.

Russell said he purchased the films by the year with the option of turning down ten percent of the shows. The more successful films were purchased with the film companies receiving a percentage of the box office.

Later many small companies produced one movie each year. Each company had salesmen on the road. Russell said several would call on him each week.

He said they always had westerns and comedies back as far as he remembered. He had a Kiddie Show every Saturday.

They were very popular and we always had a lot of kids at those matinees. The prices that he charged was 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for kids.

Russell also owned the theatre in Mt. Morris and the Pines Drive-In Theatre. The opening day of the Pines Drive-In he hired me to wash the windshields of the cars.

After I graduated in 1950, I also worked there. Everything was very simple and the gift room was a very little one that later became an office.

The large room in the lodge was for guests to gather on a rainy day.

There were tables for people to play games or put puzzles together. I always thought it was very homey and people visited.

On days when we were not busy washing tables or the walls, I would take a trail through the woods to the lower part of the pines to the concession stand where I would work.

There was a house next door to it and I am not certain who lived in that house.

The house and the concession stand were taken down many years ago. Past the fourth ford, a picnic area was eventually taken out. Perhaps all that happened when the camping area came into the park.

The Drive-in was packed so I didn’t get to each customer. During the actual movie some of the customers stood outside the car while I washed their windshield.

Russell is another businessman who had substantial influence in this community. He purchased a Ford for $800 in 1940. His next Ford purchased in 1949 cost $2,500 which he mentioned was three times as much in just that space of time.

You couldn’t buy a car between those two dates because there were few cars made during the war.

Russell was raised in Rockford saying he didn’t like large towns. He liked living in Oregon living and lived on North 4th Street.

During high school I ushered weekends and did odd jobs at their home which included mowing the yard and painting their picket fence.

Most of the above information came from an interview conducted by Oregon High School Students as a part of their Oregon History Class.

I remember the day John Maxson and I talked over my wedding plans in the little room where he did his preparation for baking.

We talked over my wedding cake as he rolled out his famous orange rolls.

That has been nearly 70 years ago and yet I remember it as if it were just yesterday. We talked about the flowers on the cake and I wanted lilies of the valley on it.

As the years went by my grandchildren with their fathers camped at the Pines every summer. Kenneth and I would go out and sit around the camp fire and watch the children as they whittled on sticks.

The year Clare went the older ones thought she was too little. As they waded through a back small stream, Clare caught a crayfish in her hands and everyone was in awe of her capabilities.

All of the grandchildren were part of this yearly ritual with their fathers and we now have it on a DVD to watch.

As the grandkids grew so did the Pines and the kids eventually found their way to the main dining room. I remember the day when Daniel said, “Why didn’t someone tell me about this a long time ago!!” He loved the chicken pot pie.

We had set up a day in March when Daniel would be out for another gathering in the dining room.

Those plans were soon cancelled.

The memories have piled up for all of us as the changes have gone on over the years. The plays, the buffets, and the weddings. I loved just sitting out under the big tent eating and visiting.

We are all in a state of shock.

I am certain there are more memories to be made and we will have to wait, be hopeful, and see how they develop.

Oregon High School to host virtual Senior Night on June 17

The Leaf River Fire Protection District is a 2020 recipient of a COUNTRY Financial Operation Helping Heroes donation.

COUNTRY Financial Representative Richard Montavon presented the donation for $1,500 to Leaf River Fire Protection District on May 13, to assist with the purchase of training materials and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

“As I work in this small community, I have often seen the selfless acts that go on unnoticed by the People of the Leaf Rive Fire Department,” said Montavon. “This donation is one way of giving back to these volunteers and honoring their dedication to our community. I appreciate all they do to keep us safe.”

Oregon High School will host a virtual Senior Honors Night on Wednesday, June 17 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Honors Night will be broadcast on the Oregon CUSD 220 Facebook Page for seniors, their families, and our community to observe safely from home.

Award recipients will be receive their certificates and all other information pertaining to the scholarship they received at graduation (to be announced at a later date).

SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

Four OHS students receive Rotary scholarships The Oregon Rotary Club Foundation, Inc. has selected four Oregon high School seniors to receive 2020 Oregon Rotary Club Foundation scholarships.

Elizabeth Villarreal and Cynthia Nyderek were chosen as the 2020 high school applicants who best upheld the ideals of the Oregon Rotary Foundation and will each be awarded $2,500 for their college expenses.

Lauren Montavon and Holly Handschuh were awarded the additional distinction of being named as the 2020 Catherine Ehnen co-scholars.

The co-scholars will each receive an award of $3,500.

A check for each scholarship winner will be delivered to their college of choice in the fall.

Guist said that over the course of 36 years, the program has awarded more than $326,550 to 181 students who displayed the ideals of Rotary International.

“Each year, the Oregon Rotary Club Foundation Board selects recipients whom the board feels meets the ideals of Rotary International,” Guist said. “The annual decision process is a very difficult yet a rewarding experience because of the large number of outstanding applicants that apply each year.

“The Oregon community should be very proud of these individuals who are not only excellent students, but participate in activities geared toward helping others, as well,” Guist said.

The University of Illinois Extension has released updated guidelines for Extension sponsored events and activities.

The new guidelines continue to focus on the safety of event participants while recognizing that these activities support the health and vitality of all communities.

4-H members will upload photos and other materials to the virtual platform as evidence of the skills and knowledge gained while working on their projects.

This allows judges to review each project and provide vital learning feedback for exhibitors. The virtual system also allows judges to select the top exhibits, including those that qualify for exhibition at the Illinois State Fair.

Illinois 4-H staff are updating project guidelines, developing support documentation for the new system, and creating training resources for volunteer judges and 4-H exhibitors.

Big news! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mt. Morris and Oregon Public Libraries are temporarily waiving non resident fees and offering that anyone living within the boundaries of the Oregon Unit School District can sign up for a temporary library card.

This special digital card will allow access to the library’s electronic resources for a limited time period

which will be helpful in supporting students’ e-learning as well as meet other informational and recreational needs.

This temporary card is valid until September 1st, 2020.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com When Rebecca Hazzard learned of White Pines Resort’s closing due to COVID-19 impacts, she knew she had to act.

The RE/MAX of Rock Valley owner/managing broker handed a $2,500 check to Oregon Chamber Executive Director Liz Vos for its “Everyone is Essential” fund on Thursday. The fund is to help small businesses recover from shortfalls of the past two months.

“Our office felt we needed to step up and help the community,” Hazzard said. “There’s so many small businesses in our area that are being impacted by COVID-19. These small businesses and amenities are the things that make people want to live in our area and keep people buying homes.”

The money was raised by all 13 of RE/MAX’s agents pooling a portion of their commissions together.

Sheriffs say they won’t enforce Governor’s order

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Brian VanVickle has been fielding calls this week from area pastors asking if he’ll arrest them if people gather for church services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a constitutional officer, I never expected to take a call like that in my career,” VanVickle said.

The Ogle County Sheriff took to Facebook last week and said that his office will not fine or arrest any individuals or businesses violating the Governor’s executive stay-at-home order. Gov. Pritzker has taken the stance this week that law enforcement will be fining and arresting people if they violate it.

VanVickle said his office will continue to stress that individuals practice social distancing, hand washing and wearing a mask when social distancing is not possible.

“I am in no way advising you to defy the order currently in place,” VanVickle said. “I’m explaining how the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office views the current order. Individuals holding professional licenses should consider potential revocation if they

defy the Governor’s order.”

VanVickle said that there is no mechanism in place to charge, arrest or fine someone in violation of the order. He said it isn’t a law, it’s an executive order.

VanVickle built his statement off of one released by the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, where he serves on the executive board. That statement said the Governor is threatening retaliation against local officers if they view it the way the VanVickle

does.

“Apparently, these consequences now include the threat of litigation and loss of funding, including funding that has been designated through the Federal Cares Act that was designated to units of local government,” the ISA statement said.

VanVickle said the ISA has reached out to the Governor’s office for clarification on these issues and more, but received no response.

“It gets us to where we’re at

today,” VanVickle said. “People are confused. This could have been avoided.”

He can’t recall ever having to make a statement that comes out against the state government. Other state sheriffs have come out with stances similar to VanVickle, such as Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana.

“The response from sheriffs has been bipartisan,” VanVickle said.

“It’s not a political issue.”

No one in Whiteside County will be cited or arrested for violating stay-at-home order, said Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker.

“That’s more of a judicial thing than a law enforcement order, I believe, the way I interpret it, as its interpreted in Whiteside County,” Booker said. “It’s a very gray area, and it needs to be settled in the courtroom, not in a sheriff’s office or a police department.”

Booker is a Democrat, VanVickle a Republican.

Countries are all vying for the same supplies. Denmark officials bought up some gowns that Dinges Fire Co. wanted at 2 a.m. on a Sunday. The Amboy company is competing with organizations of every scale.

There have been ghost products that don’t actually exist, Dinges said. He had a friend that lost some masks to a couple of guys with suitcases full of cash. There’s shortages

in products, pallets and employees.

“It’s not price gouging,” Dinges said. “We have to overpay to get these supplies or you don’t get them at all. It’s survival. I want to keep employees and pay them. We get semi loads of stuff to Amboy and we go through them and load them in sales rep’s vehicles and deliver. It’s a crazy cycle we’re in that we hope breaks soon.”

Dinges said that prices change every day. His employees are working in the middle of the night due to time differences in the global industry. Dinges Fire Co. manufactures

fire gloves overseas, so it does have experience abroad, but that doesn’t make it any less intimidating.

“It’s day-to-day, hand-to-hand combat,” Dinges said.

The Chicago Bears are currently looking into buying some masks from Dinges for their practice facility. Dinges has been amazed at who he’s ended up doing business with since March.

Nick Dinges’ foree into the global personal protective equipment industry during the COVID-19 pandemic has included suitcases full of cash, 48-hour drives to Queens and facetiming factories in China.

Dinges Fire Co. is one of the largest PPE suppliers to fire departments in the midwest. For the past two months, the Amboy company has been supplying hospitals, first responders, businesses and the state with equipment needed to keep people safe.

“It’s been incredible, unbelievable, terrifying, scary from a business perspective and gratifying to help people,” Dinges, the CEO, said.

DInges Fire Co. usually goes through vendors for its supplies.

That has changed. All face-to-face demonstrations and orders were canceled in March. With products like masks and gowns in high demand, Dinges has to pay up front for them, wait for them to arrive and then ship them as soon as possible.

Dinges has 40 team members that rely on paychecks. He spent three sleepless nights in March considering them and how his business will operate going forward. He’s risking one or two months of payroll by paying for products up front.

“We’re facetiming people in China to see if we can and should do it,” Dinges said. “Those supplies can be held up internationally when we’ve already paid. We’ve decided to only

Kaufman says his store receives “quite a bit” of mail each day and he doesn’t have much of a choice but to continue letting the carrier come in.

The United States Postal Service website says it has revised its guidelines concerning cloth face coverings and masks for its workforce.

“All Postal Service employees are now required to wear cloth face

coverings or masks where they are mandatory in support of local or state face covering directives or orders and in all facilities where social distancing cannot be maintained,” the site said.

Masks are required in public throughout the state and in Supervalu. The Oregon Post Office refused comment on the matter. Calls made to the OCHD were not returned.

The site also said that in addition to masks, face covering and social distancing requirements, postal employees are advised to follow CDC-recommended prevention methods including disinfecting fre-

quently-touched objects and surfaces, washing hands often and using hand sanitizer.

Kaufman says he has dealt with “three or four” customers that haven’t wanted to wear masks and some of them have threatened to never shop at Supervalu again. He said he simply explains their guidelines and asks them to leave if they don’t comply.

“My employees are at risk every day,” Kaufman said. “Many won’t work right now. I just think wearing one is the right thing to do. Shoppers are only in here for 15 minutes. I’m in here for 15 hours a day.”

Dinges Fire Co. isn’t selling any of its traditional products, which will cause a shortfall, Dinges said. Margins are thin on the products he is selling. The uncertainty of the industry keeps him up at night.

“If businesses shut down for a couple months, cities won’t have as much in their budget,” Dinges said.

“People will have less money to buy from us. If we lose 30 percent of our buyers, that’s a big deal. We do some business with the city of Detroit and they’re anticipating a $74 million shortfall and want to renegotiate.”

Dinges and much of the rest of his company are active firefighters and EMS professionals. On top of

their hectic work life, they can be called away for an emergency at a moment’s notice. Their ability to react quickly has come in handy.

“We appreciate the support from all of our customers keeping us going,” Dinges said. “All of our workers have adapted and excelled with the new norm, no questions asked.”

OBITUARIES CLARENCE D. BAKER Clarence David Baker, age 73 of Summerdale, Alabama, formerly of Mt. Morris, passed away May 13, 2020.

He was born on March 26, 1947 in Dixon to Clarence and Alice Baker.

He was a loving husband, a cherished father and a mentor to his grandchildren.

He was a wonderful man who did anything for anyone, with a heart of gold and will be missed by many.

DONNA M. BLACK PAGE Donna M. Black Page, 91, formerly of Forreston and Baileyville, died Tuesday May 12, 2020 at FHN Memorial Hospital.

Donna was born March 11, 1929 in Byron, the daughter of John and Marie (Magne) Hanna. She married John Black on Jan. 22, 1949. Mr. Black passed away Jan. 28, 1987.

Donna then married Henry R. Page Sr. on Oct. 12, 2002. Mr. Page died Jan. 4,

Dawn Lynn Freeman, of Dixon, was born to V. Clair and Jane Freeman on May 7, 1954.

On May 12, 2020, Dawn transitioned from an angel on earth to one in heaven, while surrounded with much love from family.

Dawn lived her life to the fullest and her memory will live in the hearts of those who survive her, including her mother, Jane Freeman; husband, Steve Brechon; her children, Kendra Considine (Eric Collier), Kasey (Dana) Considine,

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alice Baker; sister-in-law, Cheryl Diehl; brother-in-law, Virgil Williams; son-inlaw, Allen Scott Barnes; and nephew Ron Baker.

Dave graduated SIU with a degree in auto mechanics.

He also worked for Harrison Chevrolet, Watts Publishing Company and Pinecrest Manor as a maintenance manager until his retirement.

He was a member of the Lighthouse United Methodist Church in Oregon.

He loved his motorcycle rides, enjoyed camping and family vacations. Dave

loved his family more than life itself.

Dave was survived by his wife, Deborah Baker; daughters, Lisa (Chuck) Petree and Christie (Mark) Meador; grandchildren, Zach (Carley) Hagemann and Christopher Hagemann; brother, Joe (Marian) Baker; sister-in-law, Shelly Williams; brother-in-law, James Diehl; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements are by Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, Hwy 59 Robertsdale Alabama.

Donna was a 1947 graduate of Polo High School. She was a member of Forreston Reformed Church. Donna worked at both the Pitt Restaurant and Diane’s Cafe.

She enjoyed gardening and playing cards, particular 42 cards. Donna’s family was a particularly important part of her life.

Surviving are her son, Lee (Christine)

Black of Forreston; three daughters, Dawn (Dennis) Kohn of Freeport, Carol (Dan) Rippy of Forreston, and Janet (Dan) Brown of Polo; sister, Betty Good of Mt. Morris; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and special Baileyville neighbors, Kevin and Jennie Stake and their sons, Colton and Ben. Donna was preceded in death by her

parents; two husbands; daughter, Diane; son, Jeff; and brother, Charles.

Private family memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Forreston Reformed Church. Rev. Lyle Zumdahl will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Forreston Reformed Church in Donna’s memory.

She is predeceased by her father, V. Clair Freeman; brother, Daniel Freeman; and brother-in-law, David Oltmans.

Dawn spent the first part of her adult life being a homemaker to her children.

She also had many different jobs including working at The Dixon Theater, Park board Commissioner, and eventually retiring as a Correctional officer.

Dawn enjoyed playing and coaching softball, various forms of karate, and teaching self-defense.

Dawn was incredible, courageous, fun-loving, and gave selflessly of herself for others. She had one of the fullest hearts and loved not only her own children but other mothers’ children as well.

She opened her heart and home to many children. Her purpose in life was fulfilled by giving love to many whom had been without such nurturing care.

Dawn loved to vacation and had provided many people the opportunity to have new experiences through traveling.

Her children and those whose lives she impacted are her legacy. She shared her unconditional love endlessly with her grandchildren who always brought a smile to her face.

Those that knew her learned from her that there is nothing stronger than a mother’s love.

Dawn has left our world a better place, will stay in our hearts for all of eternity, and will always be an inspiration for us to view the world through the eyes of a child.

Morris Police had made contact with the vehicle and driver.

Harris was additionally issued a citation for improper lane usage. Harris was later released on an I-Bond to appear in court at a later date.

At approximately 1:33 a.m. deputies were dispatched to 4497 W. Otter Road in reference to a 911 hang up. Upon further investigation it was determined the hang up was accidental, however deputies discovered a large underage drinking party at the location.

Twenty-nine citations were issued to individuals for consuming alcohol under the age of 21. The individuals were released on I-Bonds and given future court dates.

May 16 Kenneth Ankney, 56, of Bloommington was cited at 8:41 a.m. for driving while license revoked after Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies performed a traffic stop in the 4,000 block of South Chana Road.

Ankney was released on an I-Bond at the scene.
