OHS seniors take first, second at NIU Social Impact Summit Pitch

Oregon High School seniors Isabelle Nelson, Jasmine Herbst, and Makenna Mongan from the OHS Social Entrepreneurship program won first and second place at the NIU Social Impact Summit Pitch with a Cause, a “Shark Tank” competition recognizing businesses that make a positive social or environmental impact.

Nelson won first place and $1500 for her company, Le Fou Gateau, a custom cupcake company with a goal to spread kindness by recognizing those who make an impact in the community every time someone places an order.

Herbst and Mongan’s business, The Lotus Company, partnered with HOPE of Ogle County to raise awareness of domestic violence through an apparel line to help those in need.

An Oregon woman was arrested last week for embezzling funds from an organization with ties to the Oregon School District.

Angela Burgett, 37, was charged April 3 with theft over $500, a Class 3 felony.

She is accused of using funds from the Oregon Boosters Club for personal expenses from June of 2018 through April of 2019, while she was the club’s treasurer.

According to a press release from Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan, discrepancies in the club’s accounts were reported to police on April 3.

DeHaan said Monday that the investigation is ongoing, and he has not yet determined how much money was taken because he is awaiting additional bank records.

“It appears to be several thou-

sand dollars,” he said.

Burgett is employed as an administrative assistant in the Oregon School District’s main office, a position she has held since 2016. Prior to that she was a secretary at Oregon High School for two years.

Superintendent Tom Mahoney said she has been placed on unpaid leave and an investigation is ongoing within the school district.

He said her job is unrelated to being treasurer of the boosters club.

The club operates independently from the school district. It raises funds through different efforts, and then donates those funds to various school-related activities.

Burgett appeared in court on April 4 and was given a $10,000 recognizance bond. She is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 24.

Pods make game watching experience more pleasant

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Chilly temperatures and wind didn’t bother Forreston’s Erin Greenfield and her niece, Jenna, during a baseball game in Oregon last week.

The Greenfields were tucked away comfortably in their “under the weather pod”, a plastic domed pop-op shelter, as other spectators braved the wind and 40-degree temperatures.

“My mom bought it for me,” said Erin as she watched her son Ethan play. “We’ve had it about a week. It is nice in here.”

Although designed for one person, Jenna, 13, sat inside the pod with her aunt. Her coat, not needed, was under Erin’s chair.

“It was too hot to wear,” she said smiling.

At the Forreston/AFC softball game, Stephanie Munroe sat in a similar orange pod, to cheer on the Lady Raiders.

“It blocks the wind,” she said.

Byron Generating Station’s Unit 2 nuclear reactor was taken offline Monday at 1 a.m. for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.

The unit has powered more than 1 million homes and businesses every day since its last planned outage in October of 2017.

More than 1,300 supplemental workers will join 800 Exelon Generation employees in preparing the facility for another 18-month run.

“Nearly 13,000 consecutive hours online speaks to the reliability of our nuclear plant and the important work we do to provide clean energy to the region,” said Site Vice President Mark Kanavos. “Byron Station is proud to contribute to Illinois’ clean energy future, while also powering our schools, hospitals, and senior centers around the clock.”

In addition to replacing about one-

third of the reactor’s fuel, the station will continue a multi-million-dollar transformer upgrade project by replacing two main power transformers, which are used to “step up” the electricity leaving the site for transmission across power lines.

Major upgrades like these ensure the plant will provide reliable power through all kinds of weather.

Byron’s Unit 1 reactor will continue to supply electricity to customers during the Unit 2 outage.

With both units at full power, the site produces almost 2,500 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than 2 million average American homes.

According to a press release from the utility, Exelon Generation’s nuclear units in Illinois produce half of the state’s electricity and more than 90 Exelon employees stage equipment next to the cooling towers of Byron Station Unit 2.

Forreston Lions to sponsor Easter Egg Hunt on April 20 The Forreston Lions Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt for children 8 years old and younger on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park, next to Forreston Grade School.

Black Hawk contracts are signed but no start date IDNR signs agreement with Wood Dale firm

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The contracts are signed but no date has been set for repairs to begin on Ogle County’s bestknown landmark.

“The IDNR awarded the contract for the Eternal Indian restoration project to Quality Restorations, Inc. and the company returned their signed contract last week,” Edward Cross, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said in an email on Tuesday. “IDNR will now finalize the contract at our end, then discuss with the company the timeline for beginning and completing the restoration work on the statue.”

Previous estimates from the IDNR have indicated the work will begin in June to repair the cracked and crumbling surface of the Black Hawk Statue at Lowden State Park, near Oregon, and take around 60 days to complete.

The Eternal Indian, better known as Black Hawk, was created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, and is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at the park.

Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in 1911.

Because it stands in a state park, the statue is under the juris-

diction of the IDNR. The concrete monument is still shrouded in the black plastic covering it was wrapped in late last fall.

The statue has spent the last five winters under layers of protective plastic to keep the ice, snow, and cold from doing more damage.

Frank and the late Cherron Rausa formed The Friends of the Black Hawk Statue Committee more than a decade ago and began raising money for the project, the total cost of which will approach $1 million.

State budget woes, including the lack of a capital bill for several years, side-tracked a promised $350,000 matching state grant, which was finally funded by the state legislature last summer.

A fundraising effort headed up by the Black Hawk Restoration Team, a local group, was successful in securing the final $225,000 needed for the project last fall, thanks to several large donations from area businesses and individuals.

Once the restoration is completed funds will still be needed for landscaping around the statue and for long-term maintenance.

Dad to undergo ordeal to heighten awareness for disorder Yingling’s son suffers from alopecia areata

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A Polo man plans to go through some discomfort next week to bring awareness to the auto-immune disorder his son suffers from.

Ken Yingling will be tased, pepper-sprayed, and doused with water from a fire hose on Thursday, April

18 to let the public know more about alopecia areata, a condition that causes hair loss.

Yingling said the condition causes distress to youngsters like his son, Nathaniel, almost 13, and the others who suffer from it, not only from the symptoms but also from the lack of understanding about it.

“They get a lot of insensitive comments,” he said.

Yingling’s self-inflicted ordeal got its start several weeks ago when he started a fundraiser on social media.

He pledged to be soaked with a deluge of 3,000 gallons of water from a fire hose if $300 was raised for the cause, then upped the ante to tased for $600,

and finally pepper-sprayed for $900 in contributions.

“Since I’ve raised $1,000, I’m going to do all three,” he said.

The pay-up event is tentatively set for the evening of April 18 at the Polo Fire House and the order of events will be tased, then pepper-sprayed, and finally doused with water.

Proceeds will go to the Children’s Alopecia Project, of goal of which is to provide support and build self-esteem for youngsters with the disorder, as well as heighten awareness of it.

SPECIAL EVENT

The Leaf River Lions will serve Breakfast with Bunny on Saturday, April 20 from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Bertolet Memorial Building.

The menu being served will be pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs, and whole hog sausage. Also available will be blueberry or chocolate chip pancakes as well as strawberries and whipped cream.

Children 4 and under will eat free

while cost for children ages 5 to 12 years is $4, ages 13 and over is $6, and all-you-can-eat is $8.

A picture opportunity with Bunny will be available during breakfast.

After breakfast at 10 a.m., the Lions will hold their annual Easter Egg Hunt in Bertolet Park, weather permitting.

The hunt will be inside the Bertolet building if weather is bad.

The Easter Egg Hunt is open to toddlers to 8-year-olds and is divided into three age groups, 0 – 4 years, 5 & 6 and 7 & 8, with prizes awarded for each group.

The next dinner on Sunday, April 28 will be the roast pork loin dinner in support of the Summer Daze Festival.

The menu will consist of roast pork loin, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, dinner roll, applesauce,

and cake for dessert.

The cost of the meal at the door is $6 for children ages 5 through 13 years and $10 for ages 14 years and older.

Advanced tickets, saving $1 per dinner, are available until Thursday, April 25 at the Bertolet Memorial Library or from Lions Paul Lindstrom, Connie Hartje, Kathy Rose, Laura Werner, Adrian Book, and Dorothy Mahon.

Daniel Brian Reynolds and Diamond Eva Laws, of Polo, were married on Dec. 29, 2017 in Princeton.

The bride, formerly of Malta and Rochelle, is the daughter of the late Dawn C. Horn, formerly of DeKalb, and Donald E. Horn, of DeKalb.

The groom, formerly of Rockford and Princeton, is the son of Robin L. Wessels, of Rockford, and the late Charles M. Schulz, formerly of Rockford.

The maid of honor was Brianna Laws, the daughter of the bride.

The best man was Chris Yelverton of Princeton.

The KB Kick Off Party will be held on Friday, April 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tipsy Hog, 101 S. Third St., Oregon.

Guest bartenders, including Rebecca Hazzard, Jenny Boyden, Erin Folk, and Tina Ketter, will be ready to serve beer, cocktails and soda.

Tips from the bar and profits from the 50/50 raffle support the startup expenses of the annual KB Tough Run event.

Amphibian walk offered at April 26 at Elkhorn Preserve

The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society will listen to amphibians on Friday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve.

Participants will specifically listen for the spring advertisement calls of frogs and toads near wetland areas at the preserve, which provide amphibian habitat.

Chocolate Walk offers taste of chocolate, Oregon

BY RANDY HOLLAND Oregon Together Just a few more days to get your sweet tooth polished up and those socks darned.

The third annual Oregon Together Chocolate Walk is Thursday, April 18 from 4 to 8:30 p.m., and more than 30 local merchants are ready with chocolate treats and information on their businesses. They have all donated items for one of five gift baskets.

Those attending can qualify for the gift basket drawing by getting a minimum number merchant marks on the back of their maps.

All the information and the location of the businesses are on the map.

Pick up them up at Kunes Country, Joanne’s Total Image, or TNT Motor Sales to the south, the Oregon Soap Shoppe, Illinois Auto & Tire, or Route 64 Vintage to the east, or one of the Merlin stores to the west.

One map per family is requested.

Start the trek by looking for the “Oregon Chocolate Walk” signs posted on the participating merchants and taking this opportunity to see the wide variety of experiences that Oregon has to offer. Have fun, eat chocolate, go someplace new!

Preserve offers free trees

COLLEGE NEWS Sarah Bright Sarah Bright, of Stillman Valley, graduated with a doctor of chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic’s main campus in Davenport, Iowa on Feb. 22.

Knox College Three area students have been named to the winter term dean’s list at Knox College, Galesburg.

Earning academic honors are Brian Dillard, of German Valley; Kirsten Hedrick, of Byron; and Britney Salinas, of Lindenwood.

Together, a grass roots organization that was formed to make Oregon a more enjoyable place to live, work, and play.

The organization has committees working on projects to develop and promote the riverfront and the recreation opportunities in the area, beautify the city, and honor the unique history and the future of art and artists in the community.

One group in the organization is responsible for securing the funds for the restoration of the area’s most visible work of art, the Black Hawk Statue. Look for the work to begin soon.

The Byron Forest Preserve District will be giving away free tree seedling from Living Lands & Waters starting on Wednesday, April 17 to area residents who live along the Rock River and its tributaries.

Tree seedlings can be picked up while supplies last at the Jarrett Prairie Center located at 7993 North River Road in Byron.

This year Living Lands & Waters will provide bur oaks, red oaks, swamp white oaks and red bud seedlings which should be planted right away this spring.

This energy allows them to continue the rigorous flight patterns for which they are known.

The ruby-throated hummingbird beats its wings 90 to 200 times per second creating their humming sound.

The nest is very small and can be the size of a thimble and is often

created with lichen from trees held together by spider webs. The two petite eggs laid in the nest are a pearly white.

In order to capture the eye of your migrant hummers, and keep them around until garden flowers are blooming in mass, you may want to create a feeding station.

Each spring the ruby-throated hummingbirds make a long flight to the United States and Canada from there habitats in Central and South America.

There has been a sighting of a male as far north as the Ohio River valley this week, where Illinois and Kentucky share the river.

There is good reason why we first see only the flashy jewel necked males when they get to Illinois.

The males travel north before the females in order to secure the best piece of “property” in hopes of attracting a mate when the females arrive later.

Our initial visitors are usually on their way to Canada. You cannot make a mistake in identifying this bird as it is the only species of hummingbird, out of about 15 in the U.S., found in Illinois.

At less than an ounce the hummingbird is our smallest bird.

They can consume twice their body

parts water to 1 part sugar and heat it on the stove until all the sugar is dissolved. Don’t let it come to a boil. Cool the mixture and put small amount into a feeder specifically for hummingbirds.

The rest of your mixture can be stored in the refrigerator There is no need to fill them full because you need to empty and clean them every few days.

Keep your containers clean using a mild vinegar and water solution to discourage any mold in the bottles.

Do not use red food coloring as most feeders have red on them, and the dye could be harmful to the little creatures.

Planting lots of warm colored tubular flowers, such as impatiens, petunias, native honey suckle, nasturtiums, and columbine, is the best way to keep the ruby-throated hummingbirds in your yard.

Hummingbirds are also attracted to moving water such as waterfalls, fountains, and especially misters.

Nothing is more exciting than the first arrival of such a tiny character to your yard. Have your feeders out

by April 15.

“We made some mistakes, but nothing terrible,” Forreston coach Mike McClellan said. “We haven’t given up any big innings.”

Forreston got on the board first with a Braeden Fyock RBI double after Mitchell Heinz had reached base with a single.

Oregon tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, with Riley Birnbaum scoring on a fielder’s choice.

The Hawks were poised to go up by a run, but Breccan Berns overran third pass and was called out.

The Cardinals made it 2-1 in the top of the second. With two outs, Jacob Swanson came home on balk.

Swanson doubled to start the inning.

From his first-base position, Dalton Hermes had two pop-up catches to help get Campos out of the inning.

Ethan Greenfield then mowed down the Hawks with three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Nico Giuffre beat out a play to first to give Oregon a scoring threat in the bottom of the fifth.

A perfectly-placed bunt by Rufer advanced him to second. Giuffre eventually made it home on a Cardinal error to close the gap to 4-3.

The sixth inning was scoreless for both sides.

With two outs, Forreston’s Ryan Schoonhoven doubled past the outstretched arm of Josh Sitze in center field. Huenefeld also sent a long shot to center, but Sitze tracked it down for the final out.

Greenfield sent Oregon down with a fly out and two strikeouts.

Chase Greenfield led off the third with a single, but was stranded as the next three batters hit balls at Oregon infielders for easy outs.

“Their pitcher (Noah Campos) wasn’t overpowering, but threw strikes and didn’t walk us,” McClellan said. “They made a couple of big plays to get out of innings.”

Oregon was also shut out in the third, with Dylan Greenfield, one of three Greenfield cousins, making a nice catch at second base.

Swanson continued his hot bat with a single and Kilar Huenefeld also reached base with another single. With no outs, Campos looked to get out of the fourth inning unscathed, but Eli Rufer dropped a fly ball in right field, allowing two unearned runs to score.

“Errors are going to happen, but you want to do it with nobody on base,” Girton said. “Our goal is to have three or less. We’ll be okay then. Last week, we had a game with 11.”

Rufer did make a running catch on the next hit to shut down any additional scoring.

“We wanted to give Bry some pitching time, but it didn’t work out like we wanted,” Snider said. “With Durand coming up the next day, we were sitting Sam Greenfield.”

The Rochelle game was part of a busy stretch for the Cardinals, in which they won four contests last week and had to face Durand and Amboy this week in NUIC play.

“After a 1-4 start, but playing Dakota and Eastland, I’m excited at where we are at right now,” Snider said. “The turning point was last week against Newman.”

After a weird start to a non-conference game at Rochelle on Monday, the Forreston softball team absolutely pounded the ball all over the field in a 27-11 win.

Rochelle, which came into the game with a 2-game winning streak after starting off 0-7, took a 5-0 lead into the top of the third inning.

“We came out a little flat,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “We hadn’t been down that much recently and maybe needed that to get fired up and enough to hit balls.”

In the first two innings, Forreston left the bases loaded both times.

In the third inning, the Cardinals scored their first run after a Taylor Greenfield triple and Alexus Houston double, but had the bases loaded again with two outs.

With Hub ace Bella Lodico looking to get out of a jam for the third straight time, Houston came home on a wild pitch. Then, it was Kara Erdmann lining a shot that brought in Mackenzie Schreiber to make it 5-3. Brycelyn Smith tied the game with 2 RBI on a single.

Rochelle briefly regained the lead 6-5 in the bottom of the third on a Lodico run after stealing two bases on a Forreston error. The Cardinals were hurt early in the contest with errors, including two balls in left field that were lost in the sun.

“We need work on a few of our miscues,” Snider said.

Forreston took control for good in the fourth. Greenfield led off with a single and came home on a Paityn Broshous double. Jackie Ludwig had an RBI single to give Forreston its first lead at 7-6. Erdmann upped the lead to 9-6 on two of her five RBIs. Before Lodico was finally able to shut down the Cardinal bats, Kaylee Kloster and Houston added 2-run doubles for a 13-6 advantage.

Forreston-Polo takes third at Gebhardt-Worley

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In a preview of the BNC track and field meet, it was Dixon beating Rockford Christian 141.5 to 117.5 at the 42nd Annual Gebhardt-Worley Invitational.

“We use this meet to see where we’re at,” Dixon coach Ryan Deets said. “It’s fantastic competition compared to what we’ve had. Brayden (Forrest) and Collin (Grady) were pushed. It was solid performance with no letdowns other than the 800 relay being disqualified.”

In one the highlights of the meet, it was Forrest and Jaden Johnson of Freeport going at it in the hurdles.

Johnson came is as a fifth-place finisher in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles at last year’s 2A state meet.

He lived up to the billing in the 110s, with a clocking of 14.54. Forreston was second at 15.17.

“I knew what to expect from him,” Forrest said. “I need to clean up my race and that didn’t happen.”

It was Forrest beating Johnson out of the blocks in the 300 and leading all the way in a 40.61-41.18 win. Forrest did have to survive a stumble at the end, though.

“It’s the same thing every time in the 300. I need to work on finishing,” said Forrest, who leaped 21 feet to take second in the long jump to Brady Webb of Forreston-Polo.

Coming in as the top pole vaulter (16-4) in all of 1A, 2A and 3A, Erie-Prophetstown’s Kyle Kruthoff did not disappoint the large contingent of fans gather around the Landers-Loomis vaulting pit.

The 3-time state placer entered the competition at 14-0, with only Jake Mennen of Oregon remaining.

Mennen went out at a school-record attempt of 14-8 and Kruthoff used a favorable tail wind to quickly move past 15 feet. After clearing the same height (15-6) he made in winning 1A last year, Kruthoff attempted 16-0, the highest Oregon’s standards would go up to.

He had two bailouts and one good attempt, before settling for the final mark of 15-6.

“It’s a humbling experience to compete against someone that good,” Mennen said. “I’m excited to keep vaulting with him and see what we can do downstate. The top vaulters are usually from the central and southern parts of Illinois and Kyle has made a name for this part of state.”

Forreston-Polo, who edged Freeport 92-86 for third, got wins from Webb in the long jump (21-3) and Jace Coffey in the discus at 151-2.

“He tells me he plans on running next week,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “We’ll see about that.”

Coffey continued where he left off at last year’s state meet, where he came home with a medal. It was his second meet this season that he has been over 150 feet.

“What I like about that is when someone gets consistent at a certain length, they are due for another jumpup,” F-P throwing coach Steve Christensen said.

Without Webb, F-P still ran a respectable 44.71 in taking third behind RC and Freeport. Evan Kelsey, Cailean Davids, Jordan Neuschwander and Dom Christiansen of F-P ran 1:33 to edge RC by .12 in the 800 relay.

“Jordan had a great leg for us. He’s gotten stronger from his freshman to sophomore years,” Wagner said.

Kelsey took second in the 100 (11.50) and 200 (23.63). Ethan Phillips was second in the triple jump at 40-8 and fourth in the long jump.

IHSA trying to address bad behavior at games

• Developing a standardized announcement of spectator behavioral expectations to be announced at each conference event.

This will be of no avail, just like having the IHSA sportsmanship mascot “Add A Tude” prowl the sidelines at a state final. You can make all the announcements and warnings you want, but until a fan’s heart is changed, he or she will continue to heap verbal abuse upon officials.

• At times, closing an interscholastic event to the general public completely, limiting access to only event staff, players, coaches, and officials.

This is the most radical of the five proposals being considered, but if it comes down to finding officials willing to do a game or cancellation, it might be the only option.

student-athletes more involved in conveying behavioral expectations to spectators, including friends and families.

I’m assuming this means having the player set an example on the playing field by being respectful of the officials. Or, it could be telling mom, dad or buddies to do the same while attending the game. But what happens when an official makes a call you don’t agree with. Though you have told by your son or daughter to behave, your emotion will overrule your intellect and the poor ref gets your umbrage.

• Development of standardized conference penalties for spectators who have been ejected from interscholastic events.

It’s a sad commentary on society that high-school sports would need an element of a court system to function. But, that is what this option states. Like a court system that imposes punishment, this may be the only option for repeat offenders

• Combining contests in events that are co-ed (i.e. boys and girls basketball) into being played on the same night in an effort to share available officials.

Whatever needs to be done, have at it. Nothing wrong with being efficient with usage of labor.

After looking over this statement by the BNC, there is one major component missing that also needs to be addressed. And, that is something they have internal control over.

It is the behavior of its own coaches. They lead the way in yelling at officials and often set a poor example for their players and the fans.

But, trying to corral a coach’s dialogue to the refs would be a daunting task for the athletic director. In the heat of the game, just like the fan, emotion will overrule intellect and things will come out of the coach’s

mouth that weren’t within the guidelines set up by the AD. The problem of fan behavior and retaining officials will be difficult to overcome. Here is an example of why that is.

Not too long ago, I attended an area basketball game and sat near a longtime official. Of anyone in the crowd that night, he would have been the one I expected most to be respectful of his fellows.

That wasn’t the case. Many times during the game, he loudly voiced his disapproval for the calls being made that went against his team.

If your own kind even turns against you, what hope do these poor officials have?

I applaud the BNC for taking steps to address these concerns. Unfortunately, it is not a permanent fix to a larger societal issue and that is a lack of respect for authority.

There is also a spiritual issue at play and that is the concept of forgiveness and grace. Like all human beings, officials are prone to mistakes.

Though we may not like all the calls they make, it is imperative we look to them with grace instead of wrath. That can be hard to do and that is why a change of heart is needed.

he Big Northern Conference recently announced a pro-active stance regarding fan conduct at sporting events.

More specifically, bad behavior, which is contributing to a shortage of referees and officials.

As has been documented by the IHSA, the number one reason for lack of officials is the verbal abuse heaped upon them.

This is especially true for newer members of the profession, who leave the ranks early rather than making a lifetime of it.

Athletic directors throughout the conference and all over the state are having trouble finding officials and the problem is worsening.

Let’s look at the five options being considered by the Big Northern:

With Forreston up 5-3, Birnbaum came in for relief and retired the final batter.

Fyock moved from shortstop to closer in the bottom of the seventh for Forreston. Oregon ended up with the winning run at the plate after Nolan Thomas singled and Burns was hit by a pitch.

With two outs, Fyock made it strikeout number three to preserve the win for his

team.

In an impressive showing, the trio of Cardinal pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts and only one earned run.

They also limited Oregon to five hits.

“Our young pitchers did a good job,” McClellan said.

Chase Greenfield, Heinz and Swanson all had two hits for Forreston, with Swanson scoring two of the five runs.

“Swanson deserves a lot of credit,” McClellan said.

“He’s one of those kids that keeps working and getting better. He’s had big hits for us this year and been aggressive on the fast ball.”

With the win, the Cardinals moved to 8-1. Over the last four years, the program has been averaging close to 30 wins a year.

“This is a great group of kids,” McClellan said. “The seniors have had a lot of success in other sports, It is so important in high school to have that winning attitude.

What impresses me most is losing out top three pitchers.

These events are for residential electronic items and are for residents of Ogle County only.

IDs are checked at the entrance and a short survey will be taken as well.

Residents are limited to seven bulk electronic items per vehicle.

A box or crate loaded with smaller items is considered a bulk item.

Be sure to review what is accepted and not accepted prior to arriving at the event.

Doing so makes for

a quicker visit and shorter lines due to less sorting by county staff.

ROAD WORK

IDOT construction projects begin on I-39 in county Creston Road.

Additional traffic pattern information will be supplied as timeframes are secured.

The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 15.

Work on I-39 from the Lee County line to just north of Baxter Road will begin on Monday, April 15, weather permitting.

The pavement centerline and shoulder joints will be cleaned and sealed in the 15.9-mile stretch.

Freehill Asphalt is the contractor for the $666,360 project.

Drivers should be alert for nightly lane closures with slowed traffic.

One lane in each direction will be closed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. This project is expected to be com-

pleted by the end of June.

Motorists can expect delays for both projects and should allow extra time for trips through the area.

To avoid the work area, when feasible use alternate routes.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.

Construction work has begun on Interstate 39 in Ogle County.

A press release from the Illinois Department of Transportation announced that weather permitting, construction work on the Creston Road overpass would start on April 8.

Sjostrom & Sons, Inc., of Rockford, will complete the $1,721,200 bridge repair project carrying Creston Road over I-39 near Rochelle.

Nightly lane closures on I-39 northbound and southbound between Illinois 38 and I-88 will be utilized.

This will be followed by barrier wall lane closures in each direction until the completion of median crossovers.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

March 25 Logan M. Hull, 16, of Byron, was issued a citation at 6:41 p.m. for speeding, 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 700 block of N. 4th Street.

March 26 At 1:30 p.m., police took a report of a traffic crash in the 100 block of Moring Court that had occurred at some point this day between 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., where an unknown vehicle struck a parked 2018 Jeep belonging to Raymond R. Greenfield, 55, of Oregon. Anyone having any information regarding this incident, please contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162.

Eric J. Pettorini, 32, of Rock Falls, was issued a citation at 1:48 p.m. for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 500 block of N. 4th Street.

Nathan Mackenzie, 18, of Winnebago, was issued a citation at 6:53 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. This violation occurred in the 400 block of Adams Street.

March 31 Nichole M. Pontnack, 31, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 500 block of S. 4th Street.

April 1 William J. DeLong, 57, of Dixon, was issued citations at 7:06 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving and unlawful window tint. These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Paul M. Homman, 49, of Leaf River, was issued a citation at 10:09 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 4th Street.

At 8:32 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 300 block of S. Second Street resulting in the arrest of Joseph D. Caldwell, II, 26, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Caldwell was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Connor J. Speaker, 26, of Freeport, was issued a citation at 10:17 p.m. for

operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

OBITUARY VICTOR D. GARMAN Victor D. Garman, 86, of Polo, died on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Polo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Victor was born Oct. 7, 1932 in rural Polo, the son of Lee and Buelah (Smith) Garman. He married Lois Gift on Feb. 20, 1954 in Cedarville.  Victor farmed in the Polo area and raised feeder cattle since 1936.  He was a member of the St. Marks Lutheran Church in Polo.  He sold corn and grass seed in the area and was a member of the Farm Bureau and Polo Coop. Victor greatly loved his family and animals. He was a loyal Cubs fan and loved going to sales and watching the parades.Â

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

April 1 Deputies, along with the Mt Morris Police Department and Mt Morris Fire and EMS responded at 3:59 p.m. to a two vehicle accident in the 4,000 block of West Illinois 64.

Hannah M. Repass, 19, of Mt. Morris, struck the rear of the vehicle that was in front of her. She refused all medical treatment and her vehicle was removed from the scene by Blake’s Towing.

The second vehicle was driven by Connie L. Blake, 69, of Mt Morris. She was transported to Rockford Memorial

by Mt. Morris EMS for minor injuries.

April 3 Ramiro Avila, 21, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted his $396 bond and has no further court date.

Kyle Lowe, 30, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He did not post his $1,292.74 bond and was held in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Aaron Clark, 40, of Hinckley, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for probation violation and failure to appear. He had bonds of $3,000 (10%) and $1,177 (full cash). He was given a recognizance bond of $3,000 for

the probation violation warrant and a bond reduction for the failure to appear warrant. He was held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of $175 bond pending a court appearance.

Deputies, along with the Leaf River Fire Department and ambulance, responded at 7:53 a.m. to a two-vehicle roll-over accident in the 8,000 block of North Pecatonica Road.

A semi tractor-trailer combination was northbound on Pecatonica Road followed by a car driven by Diane Hemmersbach, 51, of Leaf River.

The semi driver’s name was not listed in the press release.

The semi slowed to make a left turn into a parking lot when the car attempted to pass it on the left.

The semi struck car on the passenger side causing it to roll over into the west side ditch and strike a utility pole, coming to a stop on its side.

Hemmersbach was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. She refused medical attention and was released at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

Eric Book, 26, no address given, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to register and failure to report change of address. He appeared in court and was given $3,000 recognizance bonds for both warrants and was released with a return court date of April 17.

Ginger Greenfield, 40, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for harassment by electronic communications. She posted the $3,000 (10%) bond and was released with a return court date of April 26.

Roman Arellano, 36, of Rockton, for

Craig A. Kehl, 46, Oregon, pleaded guilty March 25 to domestic battery.

Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to two days in jail and ordered him to pay total fines and cots of $857.

Jessie Thornton, 28, Chana, pleaded guilty March 29 to aggravated driving

under the influence of alcohol. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with one year mandatory supervised release and ordered him to pay total fines and costs of $3,104. This sentence is consecutive with sentences

overweight on axle. He posted the $875 full cash bond and was released with no further court dates.

April 6 Tyler Nichol, 20, of Lena, was arrested for reckless driving following a traffic stop at 10:18 p.m. in the 7,000 block of Mt. Morris Road.

He also received citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug equipment, failure to stop at an intersection, disobeying a stop sign and unlawful use of electronic device. Nichol was released on a I-Bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 3.

April 7 Joshua McCaslin, 37, of Oregon, for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop at 12:42 a.m. at Hitt and Nancy streets in Mt. Morris. He was also issued citations for speeding, no insurance, possession of cannabis, and possession of drug equipment. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Viviana Castillo, 24, of Cortland, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following an investigation at 2 a.m. of a car in the ditch in the 12,000 block of East Flagg Road.

The vehicle Castillo was driving had traveled several hundred yards into the corn field. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.
