Mike Rock wins state’s attorney race Ogle County challenger Mike Rock won the Republican bid for state’s attorney Tuesday against incumbent Eric Morrow.

Rock, 53, of Byron, garnered 2,762 votes, or 54.23 percent, during the general primary election against Morrow, 44, of Oregon, according to unofficial election results, Morrow received 2,331, or 45.77 percent, of the vote.

Rock held the job as interim state’s attorney in 2013-14, and was defeated by Morrow in his bid to retain the job.

“I feel blessed to serve the citizens of Ogle County again,” Rock said. “We had broad support and I’m looking forward to working with law enforcement, the county board and victims of crime.”

in Ogle County from 2010 to 2013 before being unanimously appointed interim state’s attorney by the county board when Ben Roe became a judge. Rock was in private practice from 2000 to 2010.

In addition to 5 years as state’s attorney, Morrow was in private practice with Smith & Morrow from 2002 to 2014, and before that was an assistant Ogle County state’s attorney from 2000 to 2002.

“I am proud of what our office has accomplished since 2014,” Morrow said. “I wish Mr. Rock the best and will work with him to make sure there is a smooth transition.”

There was no Democratic challenger on the March 17 ballot.

Voters arrive despite COVID-19 threat Cleaning was part of the job for election workers

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Gay Keaty wasn’t concerned about going out to vote in the Illinois Primary Elections on Tuesday, but her kids were.

“They were worried about me because I’m older and more susceptible to it,” Keaty, of Oregon, said of the current COVID-19 virus concerns across the nation. “But I’m healthy. It’s important to come out and do this. I’m going home right now to wash my hands.”

The Chana Education Center special needs teacher came out to Nash Recreation Center on Tuesday with others to cast her vote. The polling place was smaller than usual due to officials from the currently-closed recreation center hoping to keep any potential contamination out of the rest of the building.

The voting activities were limited to just the lobby of Nash. Election judges lined the outside of the room with four places in the center of the room to cast votes. Carol Wig of Oregon wiped down the desks in the center with cleaning products after each person voted.

Mt. Morris Voting took place at the Mt. Morris Village Hall. The room was large and split into four different sections. Rick Nelson of Mt. Morris came out to vote and said the COVID-19 virus issue never gave him any second thoughts about voting.

Polo Polo’s polling center was at the Polo Senior Center. One election judge called the turnout “not busy, but a nice trickle” of voters throughout the day.

Polo Pharmacy Technician Jennifer Garman made her way down the street after work to vote, decked out in St. Patrick’s Day garb.

Garman said she had some second thoughts about being around people at work and while voting due to the COVID-19 virus, but that she felt comfortable due to there being no reported cases in the area.

“I wasn’t so much concerned about myself, but others, especially older people, that are coming out,” Garman said. “We haven’t seen less people coming into the pharmacy, either. People are trying to get out and get their stuff in case something happens.”

Forreston Election Judge Dr. Thomas Hughes saw a first during his election day. He helped a new citizen vote for the first time in an election.

Eileen Anderson of Forreston became a citizen last November after living in the United States and the area since 1961. Her father was in the British Army and she’s originally from Britain and France.

“It felt pretty good,” Anderson said of voting. “I have a voice now.”

“It’s been pretty slow compared to previous years,” Bennett said.

COVID-19

Much of county closed to combat COVID-19 spread Schools, restaurants, bars, libraries and state parks included

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Schools, restaurants, parks and libraries are among the places closed in Ogle County until at least the end of the month to combat the spread of COVID-19.

The virus, commonly known as coronavirus, has brought a halt to most activities outside of work for residents of the county after mandates and recommendations made

by President Donald Trump and Gov. JB Pritzker last week.

All area schools are shut down through March 30. A tentative plan is in place for students to return on March 31. There will be no student activities, including athletic practices during the cancellation.

Learning will be continued during the cancellation for area schools.

In an email sent out to parents and the community, the Oregon School District said it will be delivering continued learning activities by paper and electronically to students.

Teachers will be contacting parents individually on how to best serve the students.

OCUSD students will be required to complete evidence of attendance by noon each day digitally. The majority of the students already use Google Chromebooks for learning.

Plans have been made to provide to-go breakfast and lunch meals for free and reduced lunch students as all students. Pickups can be made at the schools and other dedicated locations.

The Polo School District will also be providing free meals. Sign up can be done on the district site.

Polo School Superintendent Chris Rademacher said about 65 meals were given out on Monday and that school bus drivers were delivering them on bus routes. The school normally feeds about 270-280 students per day.

Polo’s e-learning program went smooth to start the week, Rademacher said. His district also uses Google Chromebook computers. The online learning system was implemented last fall in case of snow days and Rademacher believes it could be used if the cancellation has to run longer than March 30.

Restaurants Area restaurants and bars were called to be closed by Pritzker on Sunday and are now limited to carry out and curbside pick up through March 30.

The Campus Cafe, located at 101 S. Wesley Ave. in Mt. Morris started its carry out service from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday and did three orders. Manager Sam Ismaili said the closure could cause financial harm for the business.

Carry out orders can be placed by calling 779-545-0007. The restaurant will be open for three years on July 5. Before that, Ismaili said that she and her business will have to take out a loan or borrow money from family due to the two-week closure.

“We get it’s spreading a lot and we want to be safe,” Ismaili said. “But bills still come in whether we’re open or not.”

bardo said on Tuesday. The library’s resources were hindered when the state’s delivery service between libraries canceled on Monday.

Resources can’t be brought from other libraries.

The Keller Education Center Preschool program is scheduled to reopen when Byron School District classes resume. The Jarrett Prairie Center Museum, Weiskopf Observatory and Heritage Farm Museum will also be closed to the public.

KSB tests 54 people for virus, quarantines 4

Four people in Lee County suspected of having the coronavirus are quarantined following KSB Hospital’s first round of tests.

There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lee County, and KSB has tested 54 people in the last day who meet clinical criteria for testing, health officials said Tuesday.

It will take up to 4 days to get the results, but four people are quarantined and eight others are in isolation in Lee County.

“That number will be higher by the end of the day today. COVID-19 is here and the truth is no one has

an idea how many cases there really are,” the Lee County Health Department said in a news release.

Those who think they are infected should call their doctor, use the “KSB Care Anywhere” virtual care program app at ksbhospital.com or contact the KSB hotline at 815-2857777, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Madison Sketo took first place at the Freeport Art Museum’s Aspiring Artists show for 2020.

Sketo’s acrylic painting titled “Life” won first place in the high school category and was the top prize.

Each year the Freeport Art Museum highlights student artwork from many schools in the local area and awards are given to three categories; high school, junior high and grade school. The show can be seen during the months of March and April during normal museum hours and is free to everyone.

LOCAL HISTORY

John Varnum Gale arrived in Oregon in 1936 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK John Varnum Gale, an early pioneer of Oregon was born in New Hampshire on April 5, 1814, four years before Illinois obtained statehood.

At age 24, he arrived at the site of Oregon in March 1836, the same year Oregon was founded.

He arrived here with his brother, the future mayor of Oregon, James V. Gale. He married Miss Phila Marschal on May 18, 1842 in Mt. Morris.

They had a family of seven sons.

Their eldest son, Russell V. enlisted in the Civil War and died at Camp Douglas in Chicago.

The following shows what life was like in the early years of Oregon, previously called Oregon City, then Florence and finally they settled on the name Oregon. Of course this was before cars, trains, phones, bathrooms, electricity, etc.

When John arrived in this area there were a few huts and a ferry at Dixon. This little valley was an unbroken wilderness. Wolves and deer were a daily sight.

This was the favorite camping ground of the Winnebago Indians: It

Here they built their wigwams, here their children played, here they hunted and fished, and here on the surrounding hills they buried their dead.

The early settlers were mostly men of small means, and by their isolated condition, were kept for years in comparative poverty.”

March 1849, John Varnum left Oregon with five others for California with ox teams. They arrived in Sacramento six months later on Sept. 9.

Two years later they returned, sailing around the isthmus to New York City. New York was definitely closer

and easier transportation to Oregon than taking oxen from California.

One of the serious hindrances to the development of this country was its distance from markets with the poor roads. Our founder John Phelps marked out the first road from Chicago to Oregon.

The creeks and rivers were without bridges and many places of the roads during various times of the year were almost impassable. Taking a load of grain to Chicago was a three day journey.

The bill at one of the log taverns on the road to Chicago for lodging, breakfast and hay for the horses was 6 1/2 cents.

The first election concerning the

location of the County Seat in what is now Ogle and Lee Counties comprised only 196 voters.

The hardships of the early day bore with especial severity upon the women. They came from homes of comfort and refinement to share with their husbands in their toils and privations. Their cabins were imperfect shelter from the elements.

They found some game but were often without corn, coffee, butter, pork, potatoes and flour.

It took three weeks for the mail to come from New York and news two months old was still fresh. Writing letters and reading them was an important part of their life. At night they read by the light of the fire.

Dixon was the nearest post office.

Early hardships and trials drew early settlers together. Churches and organizations were important. Mr. Gale’s funeral was largely attended with special trains being run to accommodate his numerous friends from neighboring towns.

From the Ogle County Reporter: “His sudden death was a rude shock to the people of Oregon, where he had lived for 48 years. And especially so to the poor and afflicted, to whom he had been a true friend and to those he always extended a helping hand in their hour of distress.”

The middle name of John V. and his brother, Oregon’s first Mayor James V. were given in tribute to the maiden name of their mother, Prodence Varnum Gale.

Need for blood donations is at an all-time high Sixty-four donors take part in blood drive near Oregon

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Robin Mitchell’s smile was wide and bright last Friday when she greeted donors at the entrance door to the Knights of Columbus’s blood drive.

“We applaud all the people who came today to donate,” said Robin Mitchell, a worker for the Rock River Valley Blood Bank Center who administered the donation effort. “They have done justice to their community. We just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Sixty-four people turned out to donate their blood at the Oregon Knights of Columbus Council 1092 and Catholic Daughters of America 1337 blood drive at St. Mary’s Community Center, west of Oregon.

Staff from the Rock River Valley Blood Center drew blood from 1-7 p.m.

The event was held in conjunction with the St. Mary’s Lenten Fish Fry, held from 5-7 p.m. As an added incentive, anyone who donated or attempted to donate received a coupon for $2 off dinner.

Mitchell said blood is especially needed now since schools and businesses, who usually host blood drives, are closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“Please continue to donate. It’s safe,” Mitchell said, urging donors to come to the RRVBC facility in Rockford to donate.

Coronavirus case confirmed in Whiteside County

“The CDC and IDPH have confirmed our first case in Whiteside County,” Lee said.

Veterinary medical group urges hygiene in understanding virus’ potential effects on pets The Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association (ISVMA) reports that there is no current scientific evidence that pets can become sick by contracting coronavirus (COVID19) from humans or other animals.

However, ISVMA officials suggest pet owners observe proper human hygiene when caring for their companion animals. This includes the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other public health organizations to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.

It also asks for patience as international health care agencies understand how the coronavirus (COVID19) spreads from human to human, as well as the potential of cross contamination between humans and animals.

“At this point in time, in-depth and experiential information as to how humans and animals can become infected with coronavirus is in the preliminary stages,” said ISVMA Board of Directors President Dr. Olivia Rudolphi, of Rudolphi

Veterinary Services in Noble. “The best practice that any pet owner can currently follow is to take care of themselves first by following proper personal hygiene when dealing with this outbreak: Wash your hands before and after interacting with your pets or livestock to avoid contamination.”

Dr. Rudolphi urges the use of hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes and other preventative care items for the pet owner, but notes that sanitizers and cleansers are not approved for use on or around pets.

She also suggests that pet owners limit interaction with other people to avoid the potential spread of the virus.

Other precautions to consider with pets are to avoid kisses from them, sharing beds with companion animals and exposure with people in your household who may be ill.

And please be socially conscious about your pet getting involved with other humans and pets, including when walking dogs or when dogs play in public parks.

“Stay at home; avoid interaction with large groups of people and limit contact with anyone you may know who may be sick,” Rudolphi says.

“Limiting your pet’s exposure to individuals and other pets will help keep coronavirus -- or any pathogen -- from spreading from host to host, be it human or animal.”

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there is currently no evidence that pets can spread COVID-19 to other animals, including people.

Action urged on loans for small businesses, local governments

Amid widespread closures and event cancellations in response to the novel coronavirus disease pandemic, businesses and governments of all sizes and levels are feeling the financial stress and considering steps forward.

The federal government on Tuesday began debate of an $850 billion stimulus package which could include checks written to all Americans at the urging of President Donald Trump. Another federal bill to provide paid sick leave to workers among other provisions awaits action in the U.S. Senate.

Nearly two weeks ago, Congress approved and Trump signed an $8.3 billion supplemental coronavirus response funding bill, which will provide $14.6 million to the state’s public health department and $8.7 million to Chicago’s. The money can be used for patient monitoring, lab testing, acquisition of test kits and protective equipment, and research into vaccines and therapeutics.

In Illinois, Gov. JB Pritzker has urged stronger action from the federal government while also taking COVID-19 response steps at the state level. He noted Tuesday the administration will file for statewide eligibility in a federal loan program for small businesses facing financial hardship.

“My Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has secured the necessary documentation to declare a statewide Economic Injury Declaration with the U.S. Small Business Association,” Pritzker said. “The SBA is offering coronavirus disaster assistance loans to help impacted companies get through this period of instability, and this will ensure that all of our counties qualify for assistance.”

Eligible small business or nonprofits could receive up to $2 million that can be used to pay debts, payroll and other bills they can’t otherwise afford due to the pandemic. The interest rate is 3.75 percent for businesses and 2.75 percent for nonprofits, and terms can be as long as 30 years, according to the governor’s office.

But during his briefing a day earlier, Pritzker noted that providing state tax relief to bars and restaurants – which are closed for dining-in but otherwise open for delivery or carry-out for at least the next two weeks – is a “balancing act” in terms of state government and local business needs.

“We want to be good to our small business people, there’s no doubt about it, and I care deeply

whether it’s a natural disaster or a public health disaster, this would allow for communities to seek loans when they have seen a substantial loss in their revenues,” Cole said.

In a letter dated Monday, IML President Leon Rockingham Jr. asked Pritzker to get behind the request to FEMA. “As mayor of the city of North Chicago, I can personally attest to the commitment of the 1,298 cities, villages and towns throughout Illinois to respond to the continued needs of our residents during this emergency,” Rockingham said. “I can also attest to the reality that municipalities throughout the state have limited resources to absorb the inevitable reduction in revenues that the economic upheaval caused by this crisis is certain to create.”

Pritzker emphasized other actions his office was taking at his Tuesday briefing as well, noting it has filed a federal waiver to expand Medicaid coverage during the pandemic and is awaiting a response. He also said his administration is working with the federal government to ease eligibility requirements for food assistance in programs.

He noted the Illinois Commerce Commission has urged investor-owned, regulated utility companies to halt service disconnections and suspend late fees, and he said Tuesday that “most utilities” have agreed to do so.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com An Ogle County-owned house at 507 Jefferson St. in Oregon was demolished by workers on Tuesday.

The Ogle County Board voted unanimously last month to demolish and remove the house.

The county purchased the property in May 2016 for $65,000. It was one of the first that was purchased with the county’s 50-year plan in mind.

In June of 2017 asbestos removal was finished in the house. Since then, it was used in training exercises for various first responders including the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and fire departments.

The demolition work was completed by the Ogle County Highway Department.

time each day is devoted to each one: read to, read with, read by.

“Read to” means someone older reads to the children. This can be you or an older sibling.

You can never do too much reading aloud. You might find it helpful to read aloud from a chapter book and read a chapter after lunch (teachers have done this forever!) and another before bed for example.

“Read with” means an older sibling or adult reads with the child. This gives your child time to practice his or her reading skills. If a text is longer and your child tires, you can each take turns reading a page.

It can be difficult for parents to find reading materials at the best levels so that your child can be successful.

If you find the material is too difficult, jump in and read to the child rather than cause frustration. The following free resource provides short pieces of nonfiction text at all different grade levels along with questions to promote comprehension: www.readworks.org.

Parents can create an account and access these

materials.

“Read by” refers to time that the child reads to him or herself. Even a few minutes of quiet time each day looking at books or magazines makes a difference.

Remember that different ages and abilities might approach this differently.

It is fine for early readers to look at the pictures. A key point of picture books is that the illustrations tell at least part of the story.

Keep in mind also that texts can include any kind of print including online materials and safe websites.

Use extra time you might have to write letters to friends or relatives. Everyone still likes to get snail mail!

Help your child as needed but allow for them to explore their knowledge of letters and sounds by writing the sounds they hear and not worrying about exact spelling on everything.

Family time spent telling stories or playing games is equally as valuable as the ideas presented above.

Tell about things that you did as a child. Retell stories that someone told you. You can use pictures cut from magazines to make up stories together. Use technology to record and/or illustrate your creations.

Although these are stressful times for everyone, time spent together can keep reading and writing skills growing.

It can also build memories and build relationships and those are the best outcomes!

s this column is being written schools are closed and families are supporting their children at home at the same time they are trying to work at home or struggling to find childcare.

Schools have responded in a variety of ways including online e-learning and multiple page packets to make up for one to two weeks of work at school.

For this column I will make general suggestions for ways to include reading and writing in everyday activities that can be used at any time but might be particularly helpful during this period of school closures.

The very best way to learn to read and write is to read and write.

With that in mind, let’s consider ways to add reading and writing tasks for any age.

Remember that the conversations and discussions you have with your children as they do any of these activities are important and make the experiences richer.

First, authentic reading and writing tasks are especially beneficial.

They are meaningful and motivating. Think of things like writing grocery lists, reading newspaper ads to look for items on sale, or reading the weather forecast to see if you’ll be able to go outside to play. Working together as a family on tasks like this allows all ages to participate at their own level.

There are different ways to read. Remember these three ways and try to make sure a little

OHS’ Beauty and the Beast One and done Oregon High School’s production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” had a short run last week due to fears of spreading the coronavirus.

Only one performance was held on Thursday, March 12. Performances were scheduled to be held on Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The following statement was sent to parents on Thursday before the other performances were cancelled, as per a recommendation by the health department.

“As you know, there have been many cancellations, nationwide, due to the threat of Coronavirus. Concerns related to the COVID-19 virus have caused our local health departments (Ogle, Winnebago, Boone) to recommend consideration of postponement or cancellation of events that involve groups of 25 or more.

“We have considered this guidance in light of the OHS play “Beauty & the Beast” which is scheduled to take place tonight through Sunday.

At this point, we are making the decision to perform the play tonight.

Our students and staff have devoted many hours to rehearsals, building the set and preparing for this production. We want to allow them to perform, at least one night.”

the cancellation announcement, did the IHSA save us from Pandemic at Peoria?

The night before, 3A and 4A sectionals all over the state were played at packed gyms.

Yes, I realize the Illinois Department of Public Health influences decisions such as these. But, haven’t there been other serious diseases in the past that haven’t elicited such a hue and cry?

The more we talk about our problems (real or perceived), the more we endow them with power.

Hasn’t social media fearfully influenced us?

Once more, I am not making light of the virus.

Shortly after finishing the above paragraphs, I learn of official closing of schools, businesses and the like.

And, it is only Sunday night. By the time you read this on Friday, who knows what will be going on. That is why I am being very careful in how this column is worded.

Without a doubt, it is one of the most difficult I’ve had to write and I apologize if it is off base.

I’m just asking if there has been an over-reaction to it all?

On another subject, there has been a positive to the sporting world being shut down for Covid-19 concerns.

It will allow this sports-crazed country to focus on something else. Though I’ve been around sports my entire life, I feel they have become over-emphasized to the nth degree.

Yes, I will miss watching the NCAA March Madness and the Masters, but look to it as an opportunity to pursue other interests and not be

beholden to almighty sports.

Just for fun, I went to the school website for Roanoke-Benson high school and found a video of their pep rally sending their super-sectional championship team off to the state tournament.

R-B is a small school of 167 with a strong heritage of basketball.

In the middle 1960s, they would regularly win 20-plus games, but get bumped off in the regional by much larger Peoria schools, like in 1967 when they were 27-0 in the regular season. Of course that was in a 1-class system.

By the time two classes were instituted in 1972, R-B had cooled down and would only qualify for the state tournament one time (1977) until this year. Strangely, the 1977 team had one of the worst records at 19-12, so go figure.

After a 43-year drought, you could imagine how excited everyone was at the pep rally for the chance to finally make it back to state.

On top of that, the school was only a short distance from Peoria, making the trek a huge social event for everyone in the towns of Roanoke and Benson.

But, that all came crashing down with the cancellation of the tournament and it could be another 43 years for that opportunity to come along again.

Not only do you have to be good, but there must be a little luck along the way, like R-B had in hitting the winning shot in the super-sectional with seconds remaining.

The 2A bracket did not have anything close to a Roanoke-Benson. There was not a legitimate public school among the Final Four.

It was Chicago powerhouse Chicago Orr, who is more like a 4A team, along with three privates in Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin, Elmhurst Timothy Christian and Breese Dei. Not much to get excited about with a bracket like that.

his column makes a concerted effort to leave the affairs of the world out of highschool sports, but with the impact Covid19 is having on athletics, it needs to be discussed.

Without having a working knowledge of this virus, I am not in position to give thoughts on it. However, I feel comfortable sharing on something many times more dangerous than that.

And, that is fear and panic.

Was it really necessary for the IHSA to cancel the boys state tournament? The day this decision was made, the 1A and 2A teams were already in Peoria, site of the event.

Is the coronavirus spreading across the lands of Illinois faster than any of us could imagine? Or, is it a case of copy-cat fear, as once the NBA canceled its season, the dominoes began to fall, with the NCAA tourney going down and eventually the IHSA pulling the plug at 6 p.m. last Thursday.

It sounds more like panic than a health crisis.

Again, I want to stress that I could be all wrong with my skepticism.

But, I have observed such a growing culture of fear, anxiety and worry in this country over the last couple of decades, I feel our society has reached a point of seeing the boogeyman around every corner and running to hide each time.

Media driven – yes. Litigation mentality – yes. – Government mandated - yes. The list goes on and on of factors contributing to this mindset.

You know the drill. For example, every time the slightest hint of a weather situation develops, it’s reason to close everything and hunker down for what ends up being an inch of snow instead of a blizzard.

That fear is being manifested right now with runs on toilet paper or worries about the stock market. If the truth was told, people are probably wrapped up more in the hoarding mentality and their investments than catching a virus.

Getting back to the state basketball tournament. With games scheduled only 17 hours after

Bringing Shimer back to life – and life back to Shimer $60 million multiuse development is in the works at campus

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com A Rock Island nonprofit economic development company that played a major role in revitalizing a downtown Sterling building now plans to invest tens of millions of dollars in the historic but decaying Shimer College campus, in Mt. Carroll.

Economic Growth Corp. will spend more than $60 million over 5 to 7 years on Shimer Square, bringing housing, retail stores, art venues, restaurants, maybe a theater or community center – whatever residents identify as a need – to the heart of this quirky village of 1,700, which is about 20 minutes northeast of the burgeoning Thomson prison.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for all of us in northwest Illinois,” Mayor Carl Bates said at a presentation in October to the West Carroll School Board, which would be affected if a downtown TIF district is expanded to accommodate the project.

The company took title on the Shimer property on Dec. 31, 2018.

Some of the 17 buildings on the 14-acre campus at 201 E. Seminary St. are 115 years old; all are in need of repair and restoration.

Initial projections call for more than 140 apartments, from studios to three-bedrooms, which Bureau of Prisons need for its growing workforce “like ... yesterday,” Bates said.

Some would be available to rent, others to buy.

The company, which calls itself Growth, plans to reuse some of the contents that remain, and historical items in dormitories, labs, the library and elsewhere are being inventoried and professionally curated.

To help pay for the mixed-use development, it is asking Mt. Carroll to include Shimer Square in a tax increment financing district.

To do so, the city plans to extend its existing TIF, which will require the approval of all 8 or 9 taxing bodies, plus the state Legislature. City officials are in the process discussing the proposed expansion with the taxing bodies.

A TIF is an economic development incentive commonly employed for major projects.

Improvements made then raise the value of the property, which in turn raises its property tax. The increase in tax revenue is returned to the developer for a fixed number of years; during that time, it is not shared with the taxing bodies.

At the moment, the vacant, quietly decaying site isn’t generating much in the way of tax revenue; if the project is realized, that would change markedly, not only through an increase in taxes, but also through the creation of jobs and an influx of retail and tourist revenue.

According to its website: “Growth’s goals and objectives for Shimer Square are to incorporate a dynamic mixture of uses while putting the historic properties back into a tax-generating status for the benefit of Mt. Carroll residents, businesses, and visitors. The end result will also increase employment opportunities and engage area residents through programmed activities.”

The company also will seek a combination of state and federal tax credits, available based on the age of the buildings, and/or depending on their ultimate use.

It is in the process of lining up

financing now; depending on how quickly that goes, it’s possible some renovation could begin later this year, Administration Director Beth Payne said.

The number of buildings, their varying conditions and the sheer size of the site dictate that the work be done in phases; what kind of financing is obtained and when also will guide that process.

Growth also launched a 5-year capital campaign, with a goal of raising $2.5 million by 2025. Because it is a nonprofit, donations are tax-deductible.

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, toured the campus Friday morning and was briefed on the project.

“Bringing this historic college campus back to life will be a great service to the growing community in Mt. Carroll and throughout northwestern Illinois,” Bustos said in a statement.

Thanks to the revitalization of long-dormant Thomson prison, which brought an influx of workers, housing and other services are in great demand in Carroll County.

The now fully activated lockup at 1100 One Mile Road was bought by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 2012 for $165 million; it spent several years on renovations and upgrades.

There are just north of 1,000 inmates housed there today, up considerably from 170 in January 2019. At full capacity, it is expected to house 1,700.

There are about 400 employees, with openings for 200 more, mostly correctional officers.

The state finished building the state-of-the-art prison in 2001, but then it sat empty for more than a decade because Illinois didn’t budget enough money to open it.

Growth in Sterling In Sterling, Growth has a history of success dating back more than a decade.

In 2016, it worked with the city officials and local development agency Sterling Today to redevelop the long-vacant second through fifth floors of the Lawrence Building, above the Whiteside County Courthouse at 101 E. Third St., into 20 affordable rental units. Its tenants make 60 percent or less than the area’s median income level.

Shimer College, founded in the mill town of Mt. Carroll 167 years ago, in 1853, was an American Great Books college (one of only four in the nation; its core curriculum was a 200-book reading list) and one of the first academies for women.

A local family is making a splash in the increasingly popular farm-to-glass movement, and they’re doing it with their very own homegrown grains at the largest craft distillery in the state

The sixth-generation family farmer decided to look for other ways to empower and secure a future for his family. His answer? Opening a distillery and making spirits with the crops he grows. He now deals with distributors, marketing and sales. It’s uncharted territory.

right time to expand.

Their logic was that it’s more difficult to build something and expand later. And the distilling industry does not lend itself well to expansion, Rick said. The law changed the allowed distilling amount from 30,000 gallons to 92,000.

The distillery has five full-time employees and another 13 part-time workers. Its inception lined up with a downtown revitalization movement in Rochelle. The city was happy to support the business and helped any way it could to get the startup going.

Diversification for his farming business is important to Rick in times when weather, commodity prices, trade wars and tariffs have made tough times for some in the industry.

“Diversifying is tremendous,” Rick Kennay said. “It’s everything to have feed corn, we have field corn, we have soybeans, we have hogs and we have the distillery. It’s everything.”

The distillery is a startup business. It isn’t fully-functioning on its own yet. The family hopes it will be in time while it takes the risk of building it up.

“With great risk comes great reward,” Quinn said. That’s what we’re hoping for.”

Working together as a family makes for an interesting dynamic for the Kennay family. As the patriarch, Rick luckily doesn’t have to do too much to incentivize his family members financially, since they each have a stake in the company.

Each member of the family is cross-trained. They can all work at

It was worth it for the Franklin Grove farmer and his family. They have fields in Ashton and Rochelle, growing corn, soybeans, feed corn as well as running a hog operation.

Rick and his wife, Doris decided to get into the distillery business when their children, Kaleb and Aubrey, and their nephew, Adam, returned to the farm.

Rick and Doris act as the owners. Aubrey handles marketing and logistics and oversees daily operations at the farm and the distillery.

Kaleb is the day-to-day production manager at the farm. Adam is the distiller.

“It’s all done by a member of the family,” Aubrey Quinn said. “My brother plants it and harvests it then takes it to the farm and we mill it there. And then we transport it to the distillery and my cousin distills it.”

The distillery is located in downtown Rochelle at the site of the town’s old movie theater. It is the largest distillery in Illinois. The former historic Hub theatre building was purchased in 2016 and underwent a massive two-and-a-half year renovation and opened in March of 2019.

Distilled at the site are vodka and gin which are currently available for sale. Bourbon and whiskey will age in the Rick House just west of the distillery for a few more years before they’re ready. Beers are also brewed on site, types of which include ales, lagers, stouts, IPAs and premium and seasonal beers.

“It’s been really well-received in the area,” Quinn said. “Craft distilleries are really a popular thing right now and people enjoy learning where their food and spirits come from. Obviously, people like the farm-to-table movement and there’s nothing more local than our own corn right there on the farm 10 miles away from the distillery.”

Quinn said that the family is working on additional products for the future. If the family did not use their own crops for the spirits, the cost would be “much, much cheaper.”

Other distilleries order in bulk from places like Indiana and have it shipped.

“As long as you run it through your still, it’s legally yours to put your name on it,” Quinn said. “We certainly don’t do it the cheapest or most efficient route, but certainly it’s a much better process when we use our own corn to do it.”

The family did not originally intend on owning the largest distillery in Illinois. But, laws changed as they were building. The size of what distillers are permitted to produce expanded mid-build. The family came to an agreement that it was the

“We all have a mutual respect for the different roles we play and I think that helps us to get along and still do our jobs,” Quinn said. “But it’s still nice to know that your cousin or your dad is still right there to help out whenever you need them.”

OBITUARIES SUSAN MARIE BENESH Susan Marie Benesh, 77, of Oregon, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

Sue was born on August 25, 1942 in Dixon to the late Ernest and Vivian (White) Gilbert.

She attended her early school years in Franklin Grove and finished her education in Oregon.

In 1959, Sue married Steve Benesh and raised four children while maintaining their farming business.

She was very involved in the farming

ROBERT W. DIETRICH Robert W. Dietrich, 95, of Mt. Morris, died Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at the Serenity Hospice and Home with his loving wife at his side.

He was born Jan. 5, 1925 in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, the son of Russell and Cora (Drury) Dietrich.

Robert graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 1943. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army including the Battle of the Bulge.

He married Donna Dummer on Feb. 28, 1947 in DeKalb. Robert farmed all his life in the Byron and Mt. Morris area.

He was a 50 year member of the Farm

days with farrowing the pigs and working the cow/ calf operation.

Years later she went on to work as a cook at Lorado Taft Campus and a deli worker at the local Pine Way and Cacciatores store.

Sue was then employed

by Rock River Senior Center where she retired in 2016. Sue was a member of Habitat for Humanity and a volunteer for many local organizations (OES IREAD Program, Rock River Senior Center, Lighthouse Church,

and Honduras Mission Trips).

She loved traveling, quilting, reading, and spending time with family and friends. She was loved by absolutely everyone she met.

Sue will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, kindness, and her dedication to her family.

She is survived by sister, Julie Langholf; her three sons, Tim (Lori) Benesh, Tony (Carla) Benesh, Todd (Kathy)

Benesh all of Oregon; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Destini), Jason (Monica), Joe (Kaitlin), Danielle, Michael (Brooke), and Blake (Devin); eight great-grand children, Nelson, Jack, Carson, Myra, Lane, Avery, Knox, and Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Vivian, and her daughter, Teri.

A visitation was held on March 17 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon. The funeral service was held March 18 at the Lighthouse Church.

A memorial fund has been established for the Lighthouse Church.

Bureau, a Cubs fan, loved his John Deere tractors, was the senior member of the coffee club that has met over the past 60 years, mostly at the Garden View Restaurant in Mt. Morris, and he regularly attended the Evangelical Free Church in Mt. Morris.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Lloyd, John, and Russell, Jr., sisters Elizabeth, Irene, Pauline, and Dorothy, and son-in-law Bob Stahl.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years Donna, children Steven (Jananne) Diet-

rich of Mt. Morris, Diane Stahl of Mt. Morris, Greg Dietrich of Mt. Morris, Cherie Lewison of Clearwater, FL, grandchildren Kirstin Stahl of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Karin (Neil) Atkins of Lexington, Kim Stahl (Tim Mitchusson) of Oregon, Dan Dietrich of Mt. Morris,, Allison (Cody) Buriff of Noblesville, Indiana, Mark Lewison of Clearwater, Florida, Beth Dietrich of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Joe Lewison of Polo, great grandchildren Tyler, Eleana, Eli, Owen, Cora, Evalie, and Danny, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held March 16 at the Evangelical Free Church in Mt. Morris with the Pastor Bruce McKanna and Pastor Larry Jameson co-officiating.

Visitation was Sunday at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon.

A memorial fund is established for the Serenity Hospice and Home, Pinecrest Manor, and the Evangelical Free Church in Mt. Morris.

GARY E. SORRELLS Gary E. Sorrells, 80, of Kewanee, died on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the Kewanee Care Home.

Cremation will be accorded and there be no services at this time. Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee is in charge of arrangements.

He was born March 22, 1939 in Avon, the son of Everett and Evelyn (Manlove) Sorrells.

He married Debra Happel on Jan. 26, 1996.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, Bryan and Paul Sorrells, two step-daughters, Emily (Don) Easterbrooks and Olivia (David) Mach, five grandchildren; Evin, Ryen, Declan, Kellan and Elias and three siblings; Marilyn, Dorothy and Randy. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Bill, Donnie, Shirley and Mike.

Gary graduated from Avon High School. He worked as an electrician for IBEW Local Union 461 for over 30 years.

He enjoyed fishing at Giant Goose Conservation Club in Atkinson and loved visiting his grandchildren.

March 11 Ronald A. Mayry, 36, of Freeport, was arrested at 12:52 p.m. for no valid driver’s license, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic needle after Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies stopped a black Hyundai in the 4000 block of West Montague Road for speeding. Mayry was taken into custody, transported to the Ogle County Jail without incident and held in lieu of bond. Mayry was scheduled to appear in court on March 12 at 1 p.m.

James Friendman, 41, of Rockford, was arrested at 3 p.m. for driving while license revoked after Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop at Illinois 251 and Eddy Road. Friendman was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he is being in held of lieu bond.

Jason Dziudzek, 33, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 3:57 p.m. for driving while license revoked, possession of hypodermic needles, two outstanding failure to appear Lee County warrants, and an outstanding failure to appear Rockford Police Department warrant after a traffic stop at the intersection of Illinois 2 and Ashelford Drive.

Dziudzek was also issued citations for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured vehicle. Dziudzek was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

March 12 At approximately 4:30 p.m. Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a one-vehicle accident with an injury in the 4000 block of South Illinois 2, in the “cut” through Caste Rock State Park.

Upon arrival, deputies learned a Chevrolet passenger car driven by Austin White M., 21 of Madison, Wisconsin had crashed.

White M. was traveling southbound in the 4000 block of South Illinois 2 when he failed to negotiate a curve before traveling off of the west side of the roadway and striking a light pole and a rock wall.

White M. was transported to KSB Hospital by Oregon EMS/Fire for non-life

threatening injuries. He was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Michael D. Rummel, 40, of Baileyville, was arrested at 9:28 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection of Rock City Road at Montague Road for a vehicle in the ditch. Rummel was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jacob D. Duke, 20, of Oregon, was arrested at 2:50 p.m. for driving under the influence of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol and improper cannabis container after deputies responded to Nashua Road and Scout Road for a report of a possible intoxicated male.

Duke was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Deputies were assisted on scene by Oregon Fire.

March 13 At 4:01 a.m. Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies along with Byron Fire/EMS were dispatched to Illinois 72 at Illinois 2 for a two-vehicle accident.

After an investigation, it was determined that a Ford Explorer driven by Greg Ridens, 49, of Leaf River, failed to reduce speed to prevent an accident.

Ridens pulled onto Illinois 2 from the stop sign on Illinois 72, causing a Jeep Cherokee driven by Dorothy Bowers, 70, of Byron to strike the front driver’s side

of the Explorer.

Bowers was transported to Swedish American Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Ridens was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Jean A. Bennett, 46, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Bennett had a bond of $2,230 and was given a reduction bond at court. Bennett was given a $1,000 recognizance bond.

Milo H. Gibson, 30, of Chicago, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear and suspended driver’s license. Gibson’s bond was set at $5,000/10% pending a court appearance.

March 14 Tanner Iglima, 19, of Winnebago, was arrested at 11:50 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and possession of alcohol by a minor after Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a car in the ditch at the intersection of Illinois 2 and Kennedy Hill Road. Iglima was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jacob Bieber, 27, of Byron, was arrested at 9:50 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop in the area of Penn Corner Road and Butternut Road for a traffic lane violation. Bieber was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Bad weather hurts local and state corn, soybeans

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com Heavy rain and flooding led to a decline in corn and soybean production and yields in the Sauk Valley/ Ogle County area from 2018.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture last week released estimates in both crops for the number of acres planted and harvested, yields per acre and total bushel production.

Last year says the wettest January through June on record in Illinois, as well as the wettest May, according to the National Weather Service. This delayed corn and soybean planting for up to a couple of months, and yields declined as a result.

It was a tough year, and “exhausting” for farmers to deal with, Lee County Farm Bureau Manager Danielle Burrs said.

“With farming, they always know that at the end of the day Mother Nature is in control of a lot of things,” she said. “They can do a lot of things on their own to make the best decisions that they can, but Mother Nature plays a huge role in it.”

Corn

Whiteside, Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties combined for about 746,500 acres of corn planted and 727,300 harvested in 2019.

It’s a decrease from 813,500 planted acres in 2018 and 798,700 harvested. In all, 97.43% of acres planted were harvested, down 0.75%.

Total bushels in the four counties dropped from 166.5 million to 139.1 million, and average yield dipped from 209.28 bushels an acre to 192.68.

“Naturally, with a decrease in

production you have less bushels to sell,” Ogle County Farm Bureau Manager Ron Kern said. “When you planted the crop, you utilized your input costs to grow, say 200 bushels an acre, but you only harvested 180.

That cost of inputs is difficult to make up.”

Statewide, total acreage of harvested crops dipped 5.6% from 10.8 million to 10.2 million. At 9.1%, the percentage of loss is higher in the USDA’s Northwest Illinois district, which encompasses Lee, Ogle, Whiteside, Carroll, Bureau, Henry, Jo Daviess, Mercer, Putnam, Rock Island, Stephenson and Winnebago counties. Whiteside was down 15% in harvested acreage losses from 226,000 to 192,000; Lee’s numbers shrunk by 10.6% from 233,500 to 208,000.

Average corn yield – bushel pro-

duction divided by harvested acres – in the Northwest division decreased from 211.7 to 188.5 bushels per acre.

Carroll County registered the second-highest corn yield in the state at 206.1 bushels per acre, which is behind Sangamon County’s 206.3.

Average yields of 200 or greater were tallied in just eight counties, down from 34 in 2018; Carroll had the smallest decrease among those.

“We were more fortunate in our area as yields didn’t see the drastic loss that other areas of the state did,” Carroll County Farm Bureau Manager Chastity Welch said.

Alexander County, at the southern tip of Illinois, saw the biggest drop in corn production, 62%.

Soybeans Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties

declined from 390,000 to 265,000 acres planted, and from 378,700 to 259,800 harvested.

Total bushels in those three counties dropped from 24.3 million to 15.7 million, and average yield dipped from 86.5 to 61.4 bushels per acre.

Unlike with corn, the number of acres harvested rose in the Northwest district, up 1.1% from 2018. The acreage of harvested crops statewide dipped 6.1% from 10.5 million to 9.9 million.

Ogle County had the largest dip in harvested acres in the area, down 12.6%, from 112,700 to 98,600. Lee and Carroll registered single-digit declines.

Like corn, Carroll County’s soybean yield of 64.7 bushels per acre was the second-best in Illinois, behind Sangamon County’s 65.5.

Soybean numbers for Whiteside County were not specifically totaled for 2019; 7.8 million bushels were harvested among Whiteside, Putnam and Rock Island counties, where data is lumped together to protect individual farms from competition, USDA statistician Micah Lorusso said.

“It would have been too personally identifiable for an individual operation,” Lorusso said. “A process of elimination can figure out who the other major landholders are, and what their yields are.”

Moving forward Adding to the loss of crop value, worldwide trade disputes have affected the market and demand for agricultural products prices remain depressed, Kern said.

“Folks need to sharpen their pencils this year and develop a good crop marketing plan in order to capture any profits during the marketing year,” he said.

Burrs, Kern and Welch all agreed that this planting year will be just like any other with their end result being determined by whatever cards are dealt by weather.

Unfortunate situations such as last year’s results have forced farmers to plan tighter budgets, do more with less and be more mindful about what they’re spending, Burrs said.

“That is going to potentially affect some of their decisions,” she said.”This year they will do what they can to get caught back up on inputs that may not have been completed in the fall,” Welch said. “They will also pray for a better year from Mother Nature.

“It is all cyclical. Small tweaks may be made but when it comes down to it, they will be farming as usual.”

Public meeting is set for Tuesday, April 21

This is the building being considered for a craft grow cannabis business. It is located at 807 W. Pines Road in Oregon where the former Basler’s Ace Hardware was once located. on Nov. 26 by a 3-2 vote.

Initially, Tree Pharm would bring 6-8 full-time jobs to the area. There could be as many as 20-25 full-time employees after a planned expansion. The only sales that are planned for the potential business at this time are of the wholesale variety, which does not produce sales tax. Tree Pharm will submit its application to the state in March and will not know until July 1 whether or not it will have successfully received its license from the state.

The city has already signed off on the application that Tree Pharm is in the approval process with them. “The plan is to be operational within 90 days,� Messenger said. “We have a September time frame in mind.�

The product will be grown and housed indoors. It was noted at the meeting that the building has 5,000 square feet of canopy space. Messenger and his partners also said that they’d like to expand the building to 14,000 square feet. There is no transportation license involved in the proposal. Vehicles will be loaded indoors.

Tree Pharm’s philosophy as a business focuses on wellness and

education as well as assisting with projects for opioid abuse. “We want to assist in educational programs for minors,� Messenger said. “We want to implement programs in the county here.�

Messenger and his partners feel good about the public hearing and obtaining the special use permit. “They’ve already passed an ordinance,� Messenger said. “There could be moral issues, but we fall within the ordinance. It’s the right area. There aren’t other areas like that in Oregon. It’s not by any schools or parks.�

Messenger looked at other areas

to bring a craft grow and infusion business before landing on the Pines Road location. Locations in unincorporated Ogle County, Mt. Morris and Dixon were considered before being decided against due to local ordinances not allowing it, delays or issues with available locations.

Messenger is a lifelong area resident and is happy with the outcome. “This is where we wanted to be and it was disappointing when we thought it wasn’t going to happen,�

Messenger said. “The whole group is from here and we want to bring jobs here. It couldn’t have worked out any better.�

A public hearing will be held April 21 to seek input from the community to allow a cannabis craft grow and infusion business in Oregon. The Tree Pharm would be located at 807 Pines Road in Oregon where the former Basler’s Ace Hardware was once located.

That location is currently in the commercial highway business district. The prospect of it was discussed at an Oregon Planning Commission Meeting on Feb. 18.

Tree Pharm was represented at the meeting by local residents Ed Messenger, David Murray, Cole Johnson, and Tyler Hagemann. “I think the meeting was positive for us,� Ed Messenger said. “I think they’re open to having the cannabis business in the area. That’s the area they pushed it go to when we first started having conversations.� A craft grow is a business licensed by the Department of Agriculture to cultivate, dry, cure, and package marijuana, to make it available to sell at a dispensary or use at a processing organization.

A cannabis infusion is the end result of the process of infusing another substance, usually an oil, with the flavor and aroma of cannabis. This process is growing in popularity throughout the cannabis edibles industry.

The city council would have to grant a special use permit to The Tree Pharm before it could conduct business. An ordinance allowing cannabis businesses within the city limits was approved by the council

Luepkes earns state honors in corn yield contest The American Farmer has long been viewed, and rightfully so, as the backbone of our nation’s economy and lead provider of the breadbasket for the world.

As they strive to meet the growing demand for corn to satisfy increasing world need, one area grower has been honored through the 2019 National Corn Yield Contest.

The national contest, sponsored annually by the National Corn Growers Association, recognizes farmers from across the country for their efforts and exceptional results.

Dan Luepkes of Chana placed first in the state in the G: No-Till Irrigated Class with a yield of 289.6658 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was AgriGold A640-77 VT2RIB. The winning field was located in Illinois. Luepkes was one of 531 state winners nationwide.

The 2019 contest participation included 7,454 entries from 46 states. Of the state winners, 27 growers – three from each of nine classes – were named national winners, representing 12 states.

The average yield among national winners was more than 383 bushels per acre – greater than the projected 2019 U.S. average of 168.0 bushels per acre. While there is no overall contest winner, yields from first, second and third place farmers overall production categories topped out at 616.1953 bushels per acre.

“The challenges U.S. corn farmers faced in 2019 were, in many ways, a perfect storm. From a slew of weather-related issues to trade disruptions and persistent low prices, farmers were tested in many ways, often many times, over the past year. With determination and whole lot of grit, the American farm families who grow corn persevered. Their harvest again produced an

abundance of corn to meet the world’s growing demand for food, feed, and fiber,” said NCGA President Kevin Ross, a corn grower from Minden, Iowa.

“The achievements of these winners contribute to the overall pool of knowledge from which the industry draws while highlighting how adaptation and innovation, when combined with stateof-the-art technology, can help farmers achieve true excellence and inspire their peers,” Ross continued. “These accomplishments highlight not only personal triumphs but also the collective achievements of the industry that supports them.”

Farmers are encouraged through the contest to utilize new, efficient production techniques.

Agronomic data gleaned from the contest reveal the following: • Average planting population for the national winners was 39,009 seeds per acre, compared to 33,785 for all entrants.

• National winners applied an average of 323.6666 pounds of nitrogen, 102.4814 pounds of phosphorus and 210.9259 pounds of potassium per acre.

• Average commercial nitrogen use per bushel of yield was 0.89 pounds for the national winners and 0.87 pounds for all entrants.

• 33 percent of the national winners applied trace minerals, compared to 8.8 percent of all entrants.

• 40 percent of national winners applied manure, compared to 7 percent of all entrants.

The National Corn Yield Contest began in 1965 with 20 entries from 3 states. At that time, the highest overall yield was 218.9 bushels per acre, while the national yield average was in the mid60 bushel-per acre range.

The winners were recognized February 28th at the 2020 Commodity Classic, the premier convention and trade show of the U.S. corn, soybean, sorghum, wheat and equipment industries, held this year in San Antonio, Texas.
