Doctor sentenced in prostitution case

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com A longtime KSB Hospital physician charged in August in a sex trafficking investigation was sentenced March 4 to two years of conditional discharge for soliciting a sex act, a misdemeanor.

As part of his plea agreement, two felony counts of patronizing a prostitute, two felony counts of entering a place of prostitution with intent, and another misdemeanor count of solicitation of a sexual act were dismissed.

Mark K. Myers, 53, of Oregon, a family practice physician with KSB for more than 20 years, was charged Aug. 20 in two cases. Charges of entering a place of prostitution were added in each case in an indictment 8 days later.

He also was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 1 day credit for time served; that sentence was stayed.

Conditional discharge means the judge has set certain conditions of his release; if Myers violates the terms, he

could be sent to jail for up to a year. The 180-day jail sentence will be dropped if he successfully serves his conditional discharge.

As is common in such cases, Myers was ordered to be testMark K. Myers ed for STDs; if those tests are positive, the victim will be notified. The results of the test will not be public.

Because the conviction is for a misdemeanor, his medical license is not in jeopardy.

Myers, who practices in Oregon as part of the KSB Medical Group, has been on a leave of absence since being charged in Winnebago County Court on Aug. 20.

He will return March 23, hospital spokesman Kevin Marx said in a statement last week.

Myers has undergone counseling, and will return “after many discussions at the administrative and board level, and with the community, along with the resolution of the judicial matter,” Marx wrote.

Myers has been a clinical leader on KSB’s staff for 25 years, and neither

his license nor clinical privileges at the hospital were impacted by the charges, Marx said.

“We are dedicated to the safety of our patients and the quality of care that we provide, and believe that neither has been, or will be compromised in any way. We understand that this situation may be uncomfortable for some, and we will actively work with those patients to help them seek a new primary care physician, should they so choose.”

Myers was among 28 people charged in Winnebago County Court in the investigation, which centered on two Rockford lingerie shops.

A former CEO, a bank president, an elected official, a youth soccer coach, another doctor and other prominent Rockford-area business leaders were among those charged after a monthslong investigation into what police say was a sex trafficking operation at Chantilly Lace, 106 Seventh St., and Exclusive Lingerie Boutique, 77 Seventh St. The two shops were raided May 23 and shut down for code violations. Also charged was Peggy Smith, 57, of Winnebago, owner of Chantilly Lace; she faces 12 counts of promoting a place of prostitution.

A Byron man accused of murdering his ex-wife and 3-year-old son appeared in Ogle County court on March 4 and received a continuance due to his defense team needing more time to review a large amount of evidence.

Duane Meyer, 37, was charged October 2019 with four counts of first degree homicide, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death. He is accused of setting a fire that killed Maggie, 31, his ex-wife and Amos Meyer, their 3-year-old son, in a 2016 at their Byron home.

Meyer’s attorney, Christopher DeRango said he and a cell phone expert are still sifting through the thousands of pages of discovery that were provided to them late last year.

DeRango’s cell phone expert contacted him late last week and said he’d conducted his primary analysis of materials related to the case, but needed raw data files that “underly the conclusions that the FBI reached.”

DeRango said he got that information to his expert but it’s a large file and he hasn’t finished going through it. DeRango then requested a continuance of at least 45 days. After that, he said all

Ogle County Sheriff, three others suing state AG Federal suit seeks to invalidate Illinois’ immigrant detention law

BY KATIE SMITH Shaw Media Illinois The Ogle County Sheriff is one of a group of Illinois sheriffs who have taken to federal court to challenge a state law restricting local police cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle joined McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim, Stephenson County Sheriff David Snyders, and Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downe in filling suit Monday against Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul.

Together, the sheriffs are seeking injunctive relief from enforcing the Illinois Trust Act. The law, enacted in 2017, prevents local and state police from detaining a person based solely on their immigration status.

The sheriffs are asking a judge to declare the Trust Act is “invalid,� on that basis that it conflicts with federal law requiring officers to comply with requests to detain individuals on ICE’s behalf. “If public safety were not at stake, this would be a standard set of problems to resolve by our attorneys,� Prim said. “But that’s why we have courts. Because public safety is at stake here, that makes the situation more urgent and in need of swift resolution.�

Both the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and the American Civil Liberties Union have said local compliance with ICE detainees are voluntary, and therefore doesn’t conflict with state law. Even in McHenry County, where the local jail earns $95 per day for each ICE detainee they house, cooperation with federal officers isn’t mandatory.

Since 2005, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has worked with the United States Marshals Service to provide bed space to house ICE detainees.

Currently, the cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE is merely and agreement, and neither party has any contractual obligation to send or house detainees, McHenry County Administrator Peter Austin said.

The “flurry of lawsuits� filed against local law enforcement since the Trust Act took effect, however, is proof that federal and state expectations could use clarification, the sheriffs said in the suit. “There’s three of us here today that are either being sued or have been sued in the past just because we have followed the law,� Prim said in a video-recorded statement that was emailed to news media Monday. “The argument is that we somehow should have magically understood that one set of laws in some way is better than the other.�

Prim was named as a defendant on multiple lawsuits accusing the sheriff’s office of violating the Trust Act shortly after former Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the bill on Aug. 28 2017. Each of the lawsuits has since been dismissed. Ogle and Stephenson Counties are involved in ongoing litigation regarding alleged Trust Act violations. “We have decided to file a complaint because, during the last 2 1/2 years the Illinois Trust Act has been in place, we have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile its demands with contrary

demands from the federal government,� VanVickle said in an official statement Monday.

Months before the suit was filed, Prim approached McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally about filing a similar complaint on the sheriff’s behalf, court records show.

Kenneally’s office declined, however, calling the suit “ill-advised,� and claiming it would “run afoul of the Tenth Amendment, which prohibits the federal government from commandeering the states to enforce federal law.�

If rulings on similar lawsuits are any indication, challenging the Trust Act won’t bode well for the sheriff, Assistant McHenry County State’s Attorney George Hoffman wrote in a February court filing. “In fact, at least six federal courts of appeals have considered the exact issue [Prim] advances here and ruled that immigration detainers to not ‘require local law enforcement officers like the Sheriff to maintain custody of undocumented aliens for up to 48 hours,’� Hoffman wrote.

The ACLU, which filed suit against Ogle and Stephenson counties in November, agreed that Illinois’ Trust Act does not infringe on federal requirements. In a joint statement issued Monday by the ACLU of Illinois and the National Immigrant Justice Center, both organizations called the lawsuit a “thinly veiled attempt to justify ongoing violations of the law.� “Nothing about the TRUST Act is unconstitutional. It simply doesn’t comport with the way in which these four sheriffs want to conduct their work,� the statement read. “Law enforcement in Illinois cannot pick and choose which laws they follow and which they do not. We encourage the Illinois Attorney General to vigorously oppose this lawsuit.�

As for the timing of the lawsuit, David Devane, former McHenry County Sheriff’s Office chief administration officer, said that as time went on, the conflict became increasingly apparent.

Devane has since retired from the sheriff’s office, but said he was heavily involved with immigration dealings at the jail when the Trust Act was enacted. “We’re starting to see more lawsuits crop up,�

Devane said. “We need direction from the federal courts on this constitutional question.�

Oregon City Council approves lease of Coliseum

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Oregon City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve leasing the Oregon Coliseum to a group that plans to turn the first and second floors of it into a museum.

The Coliseum Museum of Arts, Antiquities and Americana will occupy the building, built in 1923, in a 49-year lease and will pay the city $1 per year.

“I’m really happy for the community that this is going to be an opportunity that we’re going to pursue,” CMAAA President Tom Mahoney said. “I really think this is going to help revitalize that building and increase the usage of it in addition to driving more foot traffic in our community.”

The Coliseum is currently used for various public events and needs.

The city recently did a study on who has rented the building in the past three years and for what purpose and found that it is empty 95 percent of the time.

There were no public comments made for or against the lease at the meeting on Tuesday.

Approximately 75 Oregon and area residents attended a public meeting regarding the lease proposal on Feb. 5 and spoke for and against it.

The city will effectively become landlords to CMAAA and the museum and will be responsible for upkeep of the building, which it has a fund for. A vote wasn’t conducted

until Tuesday due to council members not being all present at recent meetings and a super majority being required to approve the lease.

Mahoney said that over a year has been spent on planning for the museum.

“Quite a bit of time and effort, not just by me but a group of volunteers that have really been committed to seeing this come to fruition,” he said.

The next steps include signing the lease and hiring a director, who will be paid 75 percent by CMAAA and 25 percent by the city. Mahoney said that CMAAA does not have any potential candidates in mind, but will be using an organization to find someone experienced in the profession.

The city’s share of pay would come out of its economic development fund.

Over 300 people attended the 35th annual Polo Toy Show last weekend.

“We had a good day,” Event Organizer Irene Short said. “We got probably 360-370 people that came through. We had new dealers and new patrons. A couple of bigger dealers didn’t come this year due to conflicts. It was nice, there was more variety.”

Vendor Greg Short attended the show as a vendor for the first time this year. The Valparaiso, Indiana man collects and sells farm toys and became interested in attending after selling at the nearby Sublette Toy Show in years past.

Ray Gerth, of Lanark, attended the show as a buyer. Gerth collects toy cars among other things. He enjoys attending to see if someone has some-

thing he doesn’t, including a model of a 1951 Kaiser-Frazer car, which he says has eluded him in years of collecting.

Seven-year-old Judah Bollman attended the event with his mother and his 5-year-old sister, Ariella. The family was in town visiting their grandfather.

The 50/50 raffle at the event was done by the Polo Lions Club. First place won over $1,500. The Knights of Columbus organization attended and sold cakes at the event as well.

Those organizations are useful, especially with community fundraisers going on in town at the moment like the one for a new concession stand building at the Polo pool.

Fort Dixon was a major military encampment Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK News of the Black Hawk War in the eastern papers attracted settlers from the northeastern states who migrated to Northern Illinois along the Erie Canal after the war.

Following the end of this war was the birth of Chicago in 1836, the same year Oregon was founded. Settlers arrived in Ogle County two years after the war ended with the Battle of Bad Ax on Aug. 2, 1832. Fort Dixon played an important role in the Blackhawk War. Two years after the battle of Bad Ax, John Phelps claimed a site for his cabin and another site for the future Oregon city.

In 1828 a half-Frenchman, half-Native American named Ogee built a cabin on the present site of Dixon and established Ogee’s Ferry. In the spring of 1830, John Dixon, after whom the city takes its name, purchased Ogee’s claim and interest in the ferry.

On April 11, 1830, John Dixon settled with his family at Ogee’s Ferry.

Today’s Dixon was incorporated February 10, 1853. Before the Black Hawk War in 1832, Dixon’s Ferry was a quiet and at times lonely outpost.

The return of Black Hawk from Iowa turned Dixon’s Ferry into a major military encampment. Dixon became the central command post during the early stages of the Black Hawk War. It was centrally-located between Fort Dearborn (Chicago), Fort Armstrong (Rock Island) and Fort Clark

General Atkinson established his command post at Fort Dixon on May 22, 1832.

Fort Dixon was built by Zachary Taylor and his army for the purpose of protecting Dixon and Dixon’s Ferry. Bob Gibler wrote the buildings were constructed of logs, one being two stories high and approximately four times larger than the other and also provided gun ports in which to defend the north and east directions.

An embankment about four feet high of earthen soil surrounded the two buildings with an opening to the fort facing the river’s edge. Soldiers and horses were camped along the river for some distance in each direction.

Reports show that there were close to 3,000 men bivouacked at Fort Dixon in the early stages of the war.

Dixon’s Ferry was used to transport troops and supplies across the river.

The fort was located on the north

bank of Rock River at Dixon’s Ferry.

At the end of the war it was abandoned. The fort structure remained standing for several years.

During the 1990s there was a movement to build a replica Fort Dixon.

Several notable people were stationed at or near this fort during the Black Hawk War including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor.

Abraham Lincoln served two and one-half months in the Army with a total of 18 days in or near Fort Dixon.

Zachary Taylor led the First Infantry Regiment in the Black Hawk War. He became our nation’s 12th president.

Winfield Scott was appointed Commanding General of the Army in 1841.

Robert Anderson became a major and commanded the Union garrison at Fort Sumter.

Jefferson Davis after the Black Hawk War became the only president of the Confederate States of

It’s kind of amazing while living most of my life in Oregon that I never heard of Fort Dixon.

Fort Dixon and Dixon were located in what was then Ogle county from 1836-1839. Lee County was formed in 1839. The old fort stood until about 1843.

Ogle County team takes the Polar Plunge Fundraiser benefits Special Olympics Close to 500 brave participants plunged into the 20 degree waters of Olson Lake in Loves Park on March 7 to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics of Illinois.

Joining for the fifth year in a row, Team Ogle County First Responders

raised over $4,000 towards the overall event’s total of $112,000.

Team Ogle County First Responders consist of members of Ogle County Sheriff’s Department and Probation, Oregon Police Department, Chana Education Center, and Sterling School District.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will beholding its 32nd Annual Toy Show & Craft Fair on Saturday, March 14 This event will be held in the Forreston Jr. /Sr. High School building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition to regular refueling and maintenance, the station will continue its commitment to major equipment upgrades. During the

outage technical experts will replace two large transformers, which are used to take the electricity produced in the Unit 1 generator and distribute it within the plant to operate pumps and other equipment.

Byron Generating Station is located northeast of Oregon on German Church Road.

With both units at full power, the site produces almost 2,500 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than 2 million average American homes.

Operators removed Byron Generating Station’s Unit 1 nuclear reactor from service at 1 a.m. on Monday for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.

While the unit is offline, technicians will replace one-third of the reactor’s fuel and complete maintenance tasks that cannot be performed while the reactor is online.

The unit just completed its third consecutive uninterrupted 18-month cycle, in which it powered more than 1 million homes and businesses with carbon-free electricity every day.

“Completing three 18-month cycles on Unit 1 without interruption is a testament to nuclear power’s reliability and to the precise maintenance and operation by the nuclear workforce,” said Site Vice President Mark Kanavos. “We rely on the skills and talents of many local union workers to support reliable, carbon-free energy generation for the Rock River community.”

More than 1,200 supplemental

workers will join 800 Exelon Generation employees in preparing the facility for another reliable run.

“The jobs provided by refueling outages are reliable and good-paying, attracting expert labor from far and wide,” said Terry McGoldrick, president of IBEW Local 15. “It’s a win-win for the local community and the workforce, who both benefit from their work and stay in the Rock River area.” 2 For several weeks preceding and following the outage, the influx of

Kent Dearborn Jr. had a 1986 Camaro. He was always working on getting it going. Every time he put a motor in it, he’d have a problem and he’d have to redo it. It was his first car. It was made the same year he was born.

Dearborn Jr., nicknamed Bud, enjoyed all things outdoors. He liked fishing, hunting, four wheeling and mushroom hunting. He liked sharing those interests with his 11-year-old son, Zander.

“They got along real well,” Kent’s mother, Florence Dearborn, of Polo said. “He likes what his father liked. Zander likes to ice fish. They were close.”

It was while doing one of the things he loved when Bud, 33, of Polo, went missing Kent “Bud” Dearborn, Jr. on Nov. 20 while fishPhoto supplied ing on the Rock River just below the Oregon dam. He was with a longtime friend, James Swift, 64, of Forreston, when their boat capsized.

A full-scale search ensued in the days that followed. Swift’s body was found on Jan. 3 in Dixon just above its dam. Bud has yet to be found.

A benefit was held March 7 at the Polo Room for the Dearborn family. A dart tournament and a silent action were held. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Swift family as well.

“It was amazingly overwhelming, the amount of support we got,” Dawn Coleman-Singley, Bud’s aunt, of Baileyville said. “I estimate around 400 people were there in and out throughout the day.”

For the past 16 weeks, the Dearborn family has had to deal with uncertainty.

“Without a body, you’re in limbo,” Bud’s aunt, Penny Lee, of Oregon, said. “You can’t have a memorial service. The feeling, it’s just an empty feeling. We want something, anything. We want to find a shoe or a piece of clothing, something.”

By law, a person can’t be declared legally dead without a body until after seven years missing.

Bud owned a salvage business with his brother, Mike, and was in the process of buying him out at the time of the accident.

Little can be done with the business until Bud is found or declared dead. The family has also been making payments on the home Bud owned.

Above all else, what the family wants most is closure and a chance to lay their loved one to rest.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Coleman-Singley said.

“There’s no closure here. Sometimes it’s like, ‘Is he really gone? Is he somewhere waiting for us to find him?’ Not having the chance to say goodbye is the hardest part.”

Bud’s grandmother, Shirley Maines of Polo recalls her grandson often being a jokester, but said he was always sincere. Bud would always bring her mushrooms that he found. He never hung up the phone before telling his grandmother he loved her.

Maines believes the March 7 benefit has helped the family cope emotionally with Bud’s loss since a funeral service has not been held.

“It’s heart wrenching,” Maines said. “It hits you and brings back memories. I think it was

good for the whole family.”

Before Bud and Swift went missing, their friendship had a father-son dynamic to it, Swift’s ex-wife, Charity Irvin, of Brookville, said. They went fishing often.

The Dearborns and the Swifts were “one big family” due to Bud’s longtime friendship with Swift’s son, Andrew. The families often had gatherings together.

It’s always in the back of your mind that maybe it didn’t happen. We all wanted to be happy. But it’s hard when the other isn’t found. There isn’t closure for any of us.”

Swift was a veteran of the Air Force. He and Irvin had two children together, Andrew (Mt. Morris) and Becky Swift (Forreston). He also had two children from a previous relationship, Josh Swift, of Davis, and Trina Goodwin of Pecatonica.

“He was an amazing dad,” Irvin said. “He was an outdoorsman. He was a simple man. He was content with what he had.”

The Swift family will be putting the money raised towards either Family members of Kent Dearborn Jr. pose for a photo at the benefit for the missing Polo man on March 7.

Swift’s final expenses or a celebration of life that will be held for him this summer.

The Dearborn family will be putting all donations and proceeds from March 7 into a trust in Zander’s name.

The family is still accepting donations. Checks can be sent to PO Box 121 in Shannon and must be made out to Zander Dearborn. The family is also in the process of setting up an account to accept donations at First State Bank.

Our grief and sorrow continues since you were taken from us in such a senseless and brutal way. In this historic case, it is unbelievable to us that a now-convicted felon can plead guilty to reckless conduct in your death and the consequences are a “30-Month Probation” sentence (no time in jail) for taking your beautiful and precious life. We still have endless questions and continue to investigate the willful and wanton decisions/actions taken by those who have “crossed the line”. This case has compromised the Ogle County Judicial System and will now be its future legacy.

Six players from the Forreston and Polo boys basketball teams have been named to the NUIC South All-Conference teams.

Polo’s Tucker Mumford, a senior, and Forreston’s Ethan Greenfield, a junior, were named to the first team.

Greenfield was a unanimous choice along with Eastland seniors Lane Christians and Brock Coatney and sophomore Kellen Henze, and Milledgeville’s Treyton Selman, a junior.

Forreston’s Kolten Dorty, a senior, and Polo’s Colton Gunder, a junior, and Jace Coffey, a senior were named to the second team.

Others named to the second team were: Jesus Aguilar, a senior, Ashton-Franklin Center; Preston Henkel, a junior, Amboy; Drew Burkholder, junior, Eastland; Braydin Preston, senior, Eastland; Keiren Harris, sophomore, Milledgeville; and Ryan Kendal. junior, Milledgeville. Fancier venue doesn’t always result in more fans A

fter a winter of high-school ball, I attended NIU’s last men’s home basketball game. The Huskies got beat, but still ended the regular season with a first-place tie in the west division of the Mid American conference.

One reason for going to the DeKalb was to see if the interest level in D-I basketball has improved after years of barely maintaining a pulse.

Coming off a big win on Tuesday and a chance to win the division title outright, not quite 2,000 fans bothered to show up at the Convocation Center.

“It’s nice when people show up,” NIU post player Lacey James told me afterwards. “I’m not going to lie. Throughout the season, we have low crowds.”

It has to be depressing to perform year after year in front of small crowds, especially with an apathetic student body.

Once NIU decided to build the Convocation Center so far from the dorms, students stopped coming to the games. The old Chick Evans Fieldhouse, smack dab in the middle of student housing, drew plenty more fans.

Here’s the paradox. Chick Evans didn’t have all the shiny bells and whistles than the Convo Center has. The school of thought is that you need fancier digs to appeal to the masses.

Look at all the billion dollar professional stadiums and arena being built with luxury suites, padded seats, digital screens, lounges, etc.

Sure, today’s fan wants an enhanced viewing experience and no doubt, the Convo Center is a more comfortable venue than Chick Evans. But, there is no atmosphere.

Since the NIU game was Friday, I had the radio broadcast of the Dakota-Indian Creek 1A sectional final in my earbuds at the same time.

As I listened, it was apparent these two small schools created an environment that NIU could only envy.

From start to finish, the crowds on both sides of River Ridge’s standing-room only gym were crazily gung-ho. As much as NIU would like to

manufacture that, they haven’t been able to.

In chatting with Ed Baylor, a life-long resident of Ashton who ushers at the NIU game with his wife Karen, he said the crowds and atmosphere at the 1A/2A super-sectional at the Convocation Center would also surpass anything the Huskies have all year.

I would definitely agree with that. With Indian Creek only a 15-minute drive from DeKalb and 48 years since its last super-sectional appearance, fans from Shabbona, Waterman and Paw Paw (the three towns making up the school district) will be invading the Convo Center in droves.

Since the IHSA went to four classes in basketball in 2008, nearly every year has had an area team represented at the super sectional, with Winnebago (4), Eastland (4) and Newman (3) the most prominent. Forreston does have two appearances in that time (2011 and 2015).

Since Rockford Lutheran and Newman bowed out in the 2A sectional and Dakota lost in 1A, 2020 becomes only the second time in past 13 years we won’t have a Big Northern or NUIC squad competing.

For that matter, 3A and 4A boys basketball was down also, even more so than 1A and 2A. Congratulations to former Oregon Hawk Adrian Myers, who was named Mid American conference womens track and field assistant coach of the year for NIU. The Huskies narrowly lost the league indoor title by two points. His distance runners took two first places, two seconds and a third for nearly half

of the points scored by the team.

Myers lives in Sycamore and is also the head women’s cross-country coach, where there has a rebirth of the program under his guidance.

Another coach from NIU I appreciate is Mark Montgomery. In his ninth year as men’s basketball coach, Montgomery told of probably not sleeping all week, as the Huskies prepare for the MAC tournament.

“It’s the best time of the year to be a student-athlete,” said Montgomery, in his post-game press conference. “Every player lives for March. It’s a great opportunity to put ourselves on the map.”

You could hear it in his voice, the excitement over NIU entering the big stage with a chance to get national press. When he was hired in 2011, Montgomery referred to NIU as a “sleeping giant”.

To have this type of enthusiasm after only two winning seasons says a lot about a man’s character. It would have been easy to bemoan the state of affairs of NIU basketball, but Montgomery presses on.

If that sleeping giant awakens and wins the MAC tournament, maybe the excitement level at DeKalb will approach what took place for Indian Creek when it beat Dakota.

On final basketball note. With all the talk about today’s youth being fixated with their devices and gadgets and not engaging in much physical activity, it was refreshing to see a bunch of Polo boys basketball players at the Nash Rec Center pool on Sunday afternoon.

They weren’t really swimming, but going at it in a Nerf basketball game.

To me, that’s good clean fun, as opposed to just hanging out at somebody’s house watching videos or occupied on the phone. For as long as I’ve covered Marco basketball, there has been good participation and everyone seems to get along.

This column has long espoused the virtues of small-town living and this was one more example of this.

March 2 Louis Portlock, 35, of Houston, Texas, was arrested at 10:30 p.m. for fleeing to elude a police officer after deputies attempted to stop a Portlock for traffic violations on Interstate 39 at mile marker 107.

The vehicle, a Chevrolet Cobalt passenger car, did not stop for deputies and fled from the scene. The vehicle later came to a stop on Interstate 39.

Portlock was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle,

improper lane usage, expired registration, speeding, and no passenger side headlight. He was released on an I-Bond with a return court date later this month. Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Illinois State Police.

March 3 Ryan Dyson, 29, of Forreston, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving while license suspended after a 7:05 p.m. traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois 26 and Lanark Road.

Debby was born August 4, 1957 in Oregon, the daughter of Elwood “Bud” Rosenbalm and Louise (Horner) Hartle.

She was raised by Bud and Doris Rosenbalm.

She was independent, strong willed,beautiful, kind, head-strong, hard-working, loved her family and friends, and had a heart of gold.

Debby is survived by her mother: Doris Rosenbalm, Oregon; children: Vallerie (Arthur) Garcia, Hemet, California; Jason (Jessika) Fellenz, Phoenix, Arizona,

Reardon O’Reilly, son-in-law, Matthew T. O’Reilly, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
