The Forreston Village Board held its first meeting at the Forreston Public Library Community Room on Monday evening.

The board will hold all of its meeting at the new location rather than at Village Hall as it has in years past, due to the difficult layout and lack of handicap accessibility at Village Hall.

“The way we’re set up, not everyone is facing the audience,” Forreston Village President Mark Metzger said. “Trustees have their backs turned, it’s hard to hear. The library is handicap accessible.

Now everyone can come.”

Metzger said he was satisfied with the new location and the meeting went well.

He said Forreston is in the beginning stages of considering alternatives for a change with Village Hall. The board plans to get community input on a possible new one and what to do with the old one, including how comfortable resi-

The Village Board paid out its first Business Development District funding to Josh’s Saloon in the accounts payable portion of the meeting on Monday.

The total amount paid out was $4,286.

Josh’s Saloon is the first business to go through the process of applying and supplying receipts. The board has had much discussion in recent meetings about the application process and hopes to receive more applicants soon.

The village gets an extra one percent sales tax from businesses within Forreston that amounts to between $4,000 and $5,000 per month. The money can be used to reimburse businesses for improvements as well as village improvement projects like implementing LED street lights and sidewalk work.

A set of guidelines was settled on at the Feb. 17 board meeting. To get the BDD money, businesses must first fill out an application, have it reviewed by

the village board, get the work done and then present receipts before receiving a payout.

An approved BDD application could cover up to $5,000 initially on business’s project as well as an additional possible 25 percent of the remaining cost of more expensive project.

“Say a business that’s going to bring in tax dollars is doing a $10,000 project,” Metzger said at last month’s meeting.

“They get the $5,000 and then may get an additional 25 percent of the leftover project. I think it’s nice to know there’s a potential of an additional 25 percent.”

Other issues The village will host a pre-bid meeting for its water main project this week. The purpose of the meeting is for interested construction companies to ask questions.

Metzger also said the village committees are preparing their new budgets for the new fiscal year coming in April.

FFA Alumni Toy Show & Craft Fair March 14 The Forreston FFA Alumni will hold its 32nd Annual Toy Show & Craft Fair on Saturday, March 14 This event will be held in the Forreston Jr. /Sr. High School building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Toy Show will be held in the Forreston High School gym and the Craft Fair will be held in the Forreston Junior High School gym and cafeteria.

A wide variety of items will be available from vendors at this event.

“The Toy Show and Craft Fair were created to help people spend a day with friends and families as well as provide funds to support the Forreston High School Agriculture and FFA programs,” said Forreston FFA Advisor Kelley Parks.

The Toy Show will feature toy tractors, farm equipment, memorabilia, and collectibles.

“The event features more than 100 tables of vendors that come from all over the Midwest,” Parks said. “There will be a new event for the 2020 Show a farm display competition for categories for both K-12 students and adults.”

“The Forreston FFA Alumni will also have special 32ndAnniversary Allis-Chalmers D15 with loader toy tractors for sale,” Parks said. “This tractor will be the first in the hometown series.

The Dixon School District’s wellness committee and the Lee County Health Department sent out tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on social media this week to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases including the Coronavirus.

Those tips emphasize staying home when sick, avoiding contact with people who are sick, avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as well as covering a cough or sneeze with a tissue and disinfecting frequently touched objects.

People should also wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the restroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

If soap and water isn’t available, use a hand sanitizer that’s at least 60 percent alcohol.

Area schools are ramping up efforts to curb the spread of germs in the wake of a heavy flu season and global warnings of the Coronavirus.

Oregon School Superintendent Tom Mahoney sent out the same tips to students, parents and staff as well as recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“We will continue to closely monitor recommendations regarding coronavirus and will update you as soon as there are any significant changes in recommendations for schools,” Mahoney said in the email.

Rock Falls Elementary schools have doubled their efforts to prevent the spread of illness by cleaning and sanitizing commonly touched items, such as doorknobs and lockers, with its Clorox 360 apparatus.

The district used to use it once every other week to spray around, which is the recommended dosage, but it has lately been doing so every week, Superintendent Dan Arickx said.

The process is done by releasing a negatively charged aerosolized disinfectant spray that does not stick to each other in the air and lands on surfaces in an even coating.

“It’s not a normal flu season, and we have the coronavirus issue as well,” Arickx said.

Frequently touched surfaces at Chadwick-Milledgeville schools are being disinfected every day, Superintendent Tim Schurman said.

“Our district is committed to the health and wellness of our students, faculty, and families,” he said. “We want to assure families that we are taking all the essential precautions and we have protocols in place to respond to any outbreak of communicable diseases within our schools.”

High-fives and physical greetings and salutations are common in young kids, which can lead to spreading germs, Sterling Superintendent Tad Everett said. One different method of disease prevention that he has suggested to his students and staff is to use a tissue to cough in, and then properly dispose the tissue.

Recent breakouts such as pertussis and the H1N1 virus have been learning experiences for districts to use as a guide on how to manage the education of further prevention.

“We should treat this like we usually do in northwest Illinois during flu season,” Everett said. “Wash

your hands. Cover your cough. Don’t come to work if you’re sick or have a fever, stay home.

Don’t be around people who are sick.”

Chris Tennyson, Lee-Ogle-Whiteside assistant regional superintendent of schools, has been in constant contact with health department directors to come up with ways schools can help prevent the spread of coronavirus, and communicating them to superintendents.

Morrow, Rock vie for Ogle state’s attorney seat

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Two Ogle County men will square off in the Republican Primary Election for Ogle County State’s Attorney on March 17.

Incumbent Eric Morrow, 44, of Oregon is running against challenger Mike Rock, 53, of Byron, who was a former interim Ogle County State’s Attorney (2013-2014).

Outside of his past five years as state’s attorney, Morrow has experience in private practice with Smith & Morrow (2002-2014) and as Assistant Ogle County State’s Attorney (2000-2002).

Rock is currently Chief of Staff with the office of the Winnebago County state’s attorney. He was first assistant to the state’s attorney in Ogle County from 2010-2013 before being unanimously appointed as interim state’s attorney by the county board after Ben Roe left for a position as a judge. Rock worked as an associate in private practice from 2000-2010.

Rock said he chose to run to become state’s attorney again after having numerous law enforcement officers, county board members, crime victims and community members ask him to run because they didn’t think Morrow is ‘doing the job.’

“We need to bring back integrity and experience to the office,” Rock said. “Ogle County deserves better than what they’re receiving right now.

Morrow said he originally ran in 2013 because the leadership of Rock was “severely lacking.”

“I want to be re-elected to continue operating the office professionally and keep the county where my children live safe while holding true to our community’s values,” Morrow said.

According to his website, Morrow’s endorsers include retired Judge Michael Mallon, retired Judge Kathleen Kauffmann, retired Judge Charles Beckman and former Ogle County State’s Attorney Doug Floski.

Chairman Jim Barnes, retired Ogle County Sheriff Greg Beitel and 14 members of the Ogle County Board.

Rock said he’s proud of his endorsements from members of the county board and that nobody on the board has publicly endorsed Morrow. The state’s attorney serves as legal representation for the board and its members.

“When the county board wants to fire their own attorney, that’s telling you how they feel about the job,” Rock said.

Morrow has been critical of Rock’s choice to run as a Republican in the primary after not always voting as one in the past.

“I’ve always voted as a Republican,” Morrow said. “I’ve never changed my values, views or political affiliation to run for office. If you look back, that’s the difference between my opponent and I. He was voting [as a Democrat] up in Boone County prior to 2013.”

Rock responded by saying that “99.9 percent” of the time, he’s pulled a Republican ballot and that he identifies as a Republican.

While campaigning, Rock has said Morrow has never prosecuted a jury trial. Rock said he has prosecuted more than 50 jury trials including murder and high-quantity drug cases.

Morrow responded by touting his experience and the experience of those in his office.

“As far as trial experience, I’ve been a lawyer for almost 20 years,” Morrow said. “That’s a lot of experi-

ence I think. And I also have a very experienced staff, and a lot of this job is administrative and policy-making too.”

Rock has also criticized Morrow’s use of plea agreements that he says result in reduced sentences for certain criminal offenses as well as his dealings with lawyers in the community, and said that if elected, he won’t “be beholden to a few connected defense attorneys.”

“Although negotiated plea agreements are a necessary method of resolving some criminal cases, there shouldn’t be routine reductions of felony offenses, domestic violence, and driving under the influence, as is practice within the current office holder,” Rock said.

“This is a small legal community,” Morrow said. “We all know each other. I’m not beholden to anyone.

I’m independent, I give independent advice to the county officials and I make independent decisions. We all have a job to do. Mine is to represent the people of the state of Illinois and do what’s right and just. That’s what we do every day.”

A topic that has come up during the campaigns is Morrow’s handling of the case of Megan Wells, 31, who died June 24, 2016, when a johnboat operated by Marc Mongan, 47, struck and killed her as it went over the back of the pontoon boat in which she was riding.

Mongan was sentenced to 30 months probation along with restitution and other conditions.

A special prosecutor was assigned to the case in August 2017 after concerns were raised by the Wells family that Morrow and Mongan had social ties.

“He kept that case for a significant period of time and was on the verge of dismissing it until the victim’s family came forward,” Rock said. “A prosecutor has no business handling a case where there’s the appearance of impropriety. The lack of judgement he demonstrated there, anybody with experience knows that’s not right.”

“I have nothing but sympathy for the parents of the victim,” Morrow said. “But there’s no issue as far as any kind of conflict of interest. The family’s attorney said it showed a lot of integrity in this office to [defer to a special prosecutor.] They’re a grieving family and my heart goes out to them, but there’s no issue there.”

If reelected, Morrow intends to expand the county’s specialty courts.

Morrow was a founding member of Ogle’s drug court team in 2009. It has since expanded to a DUI court. His first choice to expand further would be a mental health court.

“We see more and more mental health issues driving criminal offenses,” Morrow said. “Incarceration is not the answer for that. We want to make our communities safer and help the people committing the crimes.”

Morrow said he’d also like to continue to work on automation and efficiency in his office, which he said has helped with accuracy and creating a database of information on offenders, victims and witnesses.

Upon gaining office, Rock said he’d first set up meetings with law enforcement to review major cases.

“I know there’s a huge backlog of cases in the current state’s attorney’s office of police reports that aren’t being acted on,” Rock said.

“We’d set up a day and see what we need to get cleared up and work on and how we can best go about having a successful prosecution if appropriate.”

Rock also added that he’d revamp programs dealing with victims and witnesses, as they currently “are not being kept abreast of what’s happening on the cases” by Morrow’s office.

The estimated costs of that project will most likely be similar to the City Park, but that project will most likely have to be done by the 2021 season to avoid being closed.

Polo’s two major parks are funded by the city and not a park district.

“This year’s budget is $129,200,” Loomis said in 2019. “There are no full time employees as all work is seasonal and all business is conducted through city hall. There is virtually no money available to the city to do a project of the magnitude necessary to build a new facility.”

The concession stands at both parks have been leased out for several years because the cost of operating and staffing them is more than the city’s budget allows for, Loomis said.

Polo’s is one of very few public outdoor swimming pools in the area.

People from surrounding communities including Forreston, Dixon, Sterling, and Milledgeville regularly drive there to swim. The pool also offers swimming lessons.

Polo officials are still trying to raise the funds necessary to construct a new concession building by the city’s outdoor swimming pool at City Park.

Demolition of the current concession building and construction of a new facility was a topic at the Polo Park Board’s Feb. 27 meeting. A new building is needed to meet local and state health laws.

Almost $19,000 has been raised through donations, but the estimated cost to complete the project this year is $35,000.

Demolition of the current structure may begin this spring, but officials have said a new structure will not be built until there is adequate funds.

In a press release issued last week, park board president Larry Loomis said the city does not have funds at this time to complete the new proposed building and that the State of Illinois Department of Health must approve the new facility’s proposed construction before actual construction can begin.

Burlington Mt. Morris Bus ran between towns Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK An article titled “Burlington replaces Mt. Morris bus” in the Mt. Morris newspaper under a photo of the bus reads as follows: “Featuring skipper Abe Decon of the Mt. Morris-Oregon run and his new, or rather reconditioned bus, imported from the Black Hills with wire screen over the windows, possibly to be used as a protection in case hostile Sioux of the Black Hills country took a notion to attack.

“Anyways, the new ‘boat’ handed over to Abe by the Burlington is cream colored and trimmed in red with a large compartment for mail and express and a seating capacity for 10 passengers.

“The old bus which Abe faithfully and diligently piloted back and forth daily over and down Liberty Hill between Oregon and Mt. Morris for a period of 12 years, is claimed to have been sent to the Smithsonian Institute there to be kept for all time as a relic of days gone by.

“Abe is tickled with the reconditioned job and believes that it will last as long as its predecessor, possibly longer, barring road agents, cyclones, war and volcanic explosions.

“My name is Anna Mae (Decon) Swenson. My father drove the Mt. Morris bus to Oregon four runs a day to meet the train and also take mail to the train from the Mt. Morris Post Office.

“I as a young girl I rode that first trip each morning and sat in the large mail compartment in the back of the bus so as not to disturb the passengers and then waited in the office.

“He drove that route for 12 years.

He first started the bus run in 1928 and ran that same route until 1941.

I loved to go meet the train and ride on the railroad big green wagon that took the mail out to the cars on the train.”

If anyone has any memories of riding on this Mt. Morris bus, I would appreciate it if you would give me a call. Also it would be great if we could locate a similar bus. It would be great to have the Mt. Morris Burlington bus parked at the Depot.

Vinde has lived in Leaf River since 1963. Her favorite articles were about the history of farms in the Century of Farming supplement.

Being a newspaper reporter requires attending many governmental meetings. She spent many hours in her car driving to meetings in the dark.

I for one really appreciate the time and expertise that Vinde and Earleen Hinton contribute to our local newspaper. We have copies of 1986-2015 Republican Reporter newspapers at the Depot and you are welcome to drop by on Saturday mornings and sit and browse.

The photos are interesting and Marilyn especially likes the recent photo of Black Hawk with an eagle flying in the background. We are very fortunate to have local newspapers.

Baileyville Reformed Church’s soup supper is March 12 The Baileyville Reformed Church will hold its annual soup supper on Thursday, March 12, beginning at 5 p.m.

The menu consists of chili, vegetable beef soup, chicken noodle soup, ham and cheese sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, homemade pies, other desserts and drinks.

The church’s basement is handicapped accessible. Carry outs will be available.

Leaf River Lions breakfast is Saturday, March 14 The Leaf River Lions Club will offer a hearty breakfast on Saturday, March 14.

Youth music competition to be held March 22 Music studio will be presenting “Beware the Ides of March!”

Aireloom Music Studio will be presenting “Beware the Ides of March!”, its second annual youth music competition for ages 12-24 on March 22 at 3 p.m. at the Northside BarbaQ Event Room Stage in Oregon at 117 N. Fourth St. Aireloom is reaching out to all young musicians to register, and asking everyone to come out to support the future of music in the area.

The two categories are soloists or duets and bands. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges. There

will be three prizes awarded for both categories.

First place will receive recording time at Aireloom’s professional recording studio, valued at approximately $400. Second place wins a $100 cash prize and third place wins $50 in cash.

All musicians will be given very generous participation prizes donated by sponsors. Musician registration is required by March 15 and the fee is $10 per person.

Black Hawk, in his autobiography, stated that he returned to Illinois in 1832 in protest of the 1804 treaty, an action that precipitated the Black Hawk War. Anderson will describe his efforts to locate at least three sites of the Saukenuk village occupied in the 100 years that the Sauk resided in the general vicinity of the lower Rock River valley.

Using historical records and archaeological evidence, this effort has been successful in locating the location of the Saukenuk village occupied immediately before the Black Hawk War, 800 acres of Sauk and Fox agricultural fields, and several grave yards.

He will also discuss the events and political climate that led to the war, and its final results.

This lecture is free and no advance registration is required to attend.

Expect to walk and work off-trail on uneven ground and put in physical work which may include bending over, lifting, carrying, and using hand tools.

Nachusa Grasslands will provide all tools and gear such as safety glasses and gloves as needed. You are expected to wear appropriate clothing (long pants, socks, sturdy shoes or boots).

It’s also recommended you wear long sleeves, have leather work gloves, and bring sunscreen, coat, hat, and sunglasses, as weather dictates).

This program is suitable for ages 12 – adult. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult responsible for them.

The Oregon Women’s Club will host its 70th annual antique show on Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29 in Oregon.

This show, which is one of the premier antique shows in Northern Illinois, will be held at the Blackhawk Center, 1101 West Jefferson Street, in Oregon.

The Oregon Women’s Club, as a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, sponsors the show as a major fundraising event and uses the proceeds to help fund various community projects and charities.

“The facility offers ample free parking, handicap accessibility, and a huge area for our 52 Midwest antique dealers from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Iowa to display their merchandise for sale,” said show organizer Kathe Wilson.

Show times are Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $6 per person, which is good for both days.

The show will include quality antiques from the early 1800s through the mid-1900s.

The Children’s Center will help prepare your child for Kindergarten as they learn to interact with their peers.

The three-year-old program meets on Tuesday and Thursday from either 8:15-10:15 a.m. or 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The four-year-old program meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:1511 a.m. or 12-2:45 p.m. All program supplies are included in the monthly tuition payment. Learners also develop readiness skills, such as number concepts, problem solving, recognition of capital and lowercase letters, name printing, as well as early printing practice of all letters, and letter-sound recognition, that will help promote their success in kindergarten. Learners will also take field trips in the community.

‘So many volunteers, too many to even name.’

“While we were grateful to have a place to host our home games and thankful for the cooperation between the summer league coordinators, these venues presented multiple challenges regarding scheduling and student transportation,” FHS Principal Travis Heinz said in a press release.

This spring, Forreston is scheduled to host a track meet, a baseball game and a softball game all in one day. That will be a first. Zick hopes it will bring a crowd not only to the school, but the village and area as well.

It will be a “couple of years” before bullpens and batting cages are installed at the sports complex.

walking path between areas. Another addition at some point will be electricity and scoreboards.

“This was started five years ago with planning,” Zick said. It’s been a long time coming. So many volunteers, too many to even name., To get the field ready for this spring will be an amazing feeling.”

The accolades of Forreston’s softball and baseball teams include regional softball titles in 2010, 2011 and 2019, a sectional softball title and elite eight appearance in 2010, baseball regional titles in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019, a sectional baseball title and elite eight appearance in 2018 and seven combined NUIC conference championships.

The school district and Forreston Sports Boosters recently launched

a buy-a-brick fundraiser campaign which personalizes bricks to attach outside of the backstop. The idea is aimed at fans as well as advertisers.

This fundraiser has currently raised over $20,000 for the Cardinal Field project.

Forreston Sports Boosters have contributed approximately $130,000 to the project so far, Zick said.

Donations are also being accepted for the Cardinal Field Complex.

Forreston High School will start playing on its new baseball field with a dedication ceremony on April 11 at 9:30 a.m.

For the past five years, the school has been working on the Cardinal Field Complex, which includes a softball and baseball field on school property.

The softball diamond is already completed and has been home to two seasons of Cardinal softball already.

The baseball field will open play this spring, despite fence cap, batting cages, bullpens and more not being installed yet.

“Everyone’s always asking, ‘Is it going to be ready?’” Assistant Principal/Activities Director Kyle Zick said. “We hear it from the players all the time. And they’re excited.”

Zick added that the varsity baseball team will play at the new field continuously after it is officially opened. The freshmen and sophomore teams will occasionally play on it.

In Dec. 2018, community volunteers moved over 9,000 cubic yards to complete the rough grade of the baseball field. As of Jan. 2020, final excavation, tilling, seeding, and the mound had been finished with fencing and dugouts still in progress.

Since softball started and baseball was reinstated in 1999, Forreston High School played all home games off site at Ben Miller Park in German Valley and Warnken Park in

Forreston’s Alexus Houston, a senior, was named to the first team along with unanimous selections Erin Henze, Lydia Coatney, and Karlie Krogman of Eastland and Abi Payne and Mallory Powers of Amboy. Krogman, Payne and Powers are juniors.

Polo juniors Mallory Patterson and Alex Dusing were named to the second all-conference team along with AFC’s Camden Penick, Eastland’s Meredith Janssen, Milledgeville’s Adriana Miller, and Amboy’s Kyleigh Donna and Gabby Jones.

Polo falls at regional The Marcos fell behind 17-7 after one quarter and 28-10 by halftime in a 63-39 regional semifinal loss to Dakota on their home court.

Colton Gunder’s 10 points paced Polo, and Gavin Zell and Scott Prerost each added six as nine different Marcos scored.

Evan Flynn hit six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points for Dakota.

The Indians won the regional downing Pecatonica 57-49 to advance to the River-Ridge Sectional where they beat Fulton 52-39.

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com Eastland trailed Lewistown by 10 at the half in the Class 1A girls basketball state championship game on Feb. 29 at Redbird Arena.

But there was no panic from the Cougars. They came out with the first 10 points to start the third quarter and got one defensive stop after another – a steal from Erin Henze, an offensive foul against Lewistown, three straight trips down the floor for the Indians resulting in one shot, a miss, and an Eastland defensive rebound.

That run was enough for the Cougars to tie the game, and after a backand-forth third and fourth quarter,

the Cougars pulled out the 62-57 win to claim the state championship.

“It was all down to [Eastland coach Nicole] Brinker’s halftime speech,” Cougars senior guard Lydia Coatney said. “She said, ‘Play for each other,’ and we all just came together and played for the person next to us.”

The Cougars opened the third quarter with a putback by Meredith Janssen, then Henze hit a pair of free throws, Coatney added a pull-up jumper, then Dani Rush drove to the basket for a score and hit a jumper with 4 minutes left in the quarter.

What had been a 36-26 Indians lead when the teams came out of their locker rooms suddenly was a 36-36 tie.

“We went into halftime and talked it out. We knew we had to pick up our defense and pick up our intensity,” Henze said. “Just leave it all out on the floor, because this was our last game no matter what.”

Lewistown, which entered the game ranked No. 1 in the state, and had scored 36 in the first half, was held scoreless for the first 4 minutes of the third quarter, and finished that quarter with just five points.

“We didn’t switch anything, we just executed,” Brinker said. “They were supposed to switching all screens. We did go from hanging on [Anna Heffren] to everybody switching, and I think that helped because we got a little confused about who was switching and who was staying.

They just decided to lock in and play defense.”

From there, the game entered a frenetic stretch that saw the lead change hands eight times. Heffren, Lewistown’s all-state guard, broke the 36-36 tie with a layup. Coatney tied it again hitting a floater in the lane. Lewistown took the lead on a Macy Mikulich free throw. Coatney then fed Henze for a 3-pointer to put Eastland up 41-39, the Cougars’ first lead since the 2-minute mark of the first quarter.

That was one of six assists in the game for Coatney, with half of those resulting in 3-pointers by Henze.

State tournament was a slice of basketball heaven F ball game, I decided to check out what could be the worst team in all of Illinois - Leland.

Dakota put up 42 points before Leland even made a point. By then, Dakota had sat the starters and some of the second unit, as well. Every Leland possession was either a turnover or missed shot and they were terrible shooters.

In the second half, Dakota’s fresh-soph unit continued to put the beat down on, though they were told to make X number of passes before shooting.

To compound the misery, Leland only had five fans present. However, there was a bright spot with eight cheerleaders going non-stop in cheering their team on.

God bless those girls for the unwavering support of a 0-30 squad whose play more closely resembled junior-high ball.

After some sleuthing with two of the parents, I learned that Leland used to co-op with Earlville.

The two schools weren’t getting along and the co-op was dropped.

To compound matters, the best senior players from Leland transferred to play soccer and basketball at Earlville this year.

Now it made sense as to why this tiny school of 77 students was so bad. But, one of the Leland coaches told me after the game that the kids never got discouraged and kept their effort up.

nebago sharp shooter that burned Oregon, and 2019 Forreston grad Braeden Fyock are cousins?

There has to be something in the genes when it comes to long-range accuracy.

Both set school records for 3s in a season and both tied school records for 3s in a game at nine.

More uncanny are these records happening in regional openers in their senior season, where they also had career highs of 39 and 35 points.

Thank You Regional Hosts The hospitality encountered at Polo, Winnebago and Pearl City gave me appreciation for living in small-town America.

I contrast that with treatment some of my colleagues shared about going to suburban Streamwood to cover the girls 1A super-sectional.

It wasn’t anything like the effort made by the smaller schools to make the media feel welcome.

To compound matters, they were rudely told to leave the building immediately after the game at Streamwood.

A radio guy said it was like being kicked out and a newspaper reporter said he had to find a McDonalds to work at.

The folks at Polo and ‘Bago know me and it’s like going to a family gathering. At Pearl City, I did not know a soul, but a friendly secretary doing some late-night work offered to let me do my story in her office after I was having problems with Internet connection.

Then a life skills teacher at the school stopped in and asked if she could get me a cup of hot tea while I worked on the game story.

Truth be told, I had more fun visiting with those two women after the game than I did watching Le-Win and Eastland play.

or the hardcore fan, it was basketball heaven last week with the girls 1A state tournament and boys regional play.

What a great girls championship game between Eastland and Lewistown. Eastland stormed back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win the evenly-matched battle that had nine lead changes and seven ties.

Some called Amboy versus Eastland the real state title game, but Lewistown proved just as worthy as these two NUIC powers.

The beauty of such a tournament is that Amboy, Eastland and Lewistown consisted of home grown talent. That is in stark contrast to the all-star teams, be it public or private schools, which have ruined the integrity of IHSA state basketball.

The 2A title game between Pleasant Plains and Chicago Marshall was also a good one. In this area, 2A girls ball was very weak, as evidenced by supersectional winner Port Byron Riverdale getting walloped in its two games downstate.

After watching them play Polo, I wondered why Riverdale was even rated in 2A. Not impressed at all.

Likewise, boys 2A basketball around these parts is watered down, with Sterling Newman the only team left at a sectional. Their 34-point win over perennial contender Rock Falls wasn’t a surprise either, as the Rockets were down.

At the 1A sectional, Dakota and Lena-Winslow are intriguing challengers to undefeated and No. 1-ranked Indian Creek. Very odd to have to the two best 1A wrestling teams to also have the two best area basketball teams.

It was very enjoyable covering boys regionals at Polo, Winnebago and Pearl City. Good crowds at each venue and tons of enthusiasm.

Lewistown fought back to tie it, a layup from Heffren making it 52-52 with 3:11 left, but that tie lasted only 16 seconds before Henze split a pair of defenders in the lane to answer on the other end, and Eastland led from then on.

The Cougars closed the game out by hitting 8 of 10 from the freethrow line.

Eastland has seen pressing teams in the past; Chicago Hope Academy threw the press at them in Monday’s supersectional. But this was different.

But Eastland got used to the press in the second half, and Lewistown wound up turning the ball over more in the second half than the Cougars did.

Henze scored 20 in her final game for the Cougars, and she also had seven rebounds and four steals. Coatney scored 15 and had six rebounds to go with those six assists, and Rush added 12 points.

Janssen finished with nine points and four rebounds, and Krogman chipped in six points, eight boards and two blocks.

PUBLIC VOICE Polo Park Board discusses new concession stand construction At their first meeting of the Polo Park Board Feb. 27, among many issues discussed was the demolishing of the obsolete old concession building and the construction of a new facility meeting all local and state health laws at City Park.

The discussion revolved around several key points.

First, so far, almost nineteen thousand dollars has been raised from generous donors.

Second, the project to be completed this season will cost an estimated thirty-five thousand dollars.

Third, demolition of the current structure may begin this spring. If, however, there is not enough money to build the new structure then it will not be built until there is enough money as the City has no funds at this time to complete the new proposed building.

Fourth, the State of Illinois Department of Health must approve the new facility’s proposed construction before actual construction can begin.

A number of proposals from Board members and the public to raise the additional ten to fifteen thousand dollars were discussed.

Community member Ron Bardell proposed a public auction of donated items to be held.

Jason Kimpel proposed selling engraved bricks which would become part of the new building. The proposed pros and cons of the suggestions were thoroughly discussed with no action to be taken until the next meeting of the Board on March 18.

The Board will continue to welcome any suggestions from the public that will help to get the project across the finish line for the upcoming season.

Make Ogle County safe again: Vote Rock I came to know Mike Rock when he worked for Ogle State’s Attorney Ben Roe, while serving on the Ogle County Board. I had the pleasure of voting for his appointment to fill out Ben’s term as state’s attorney.

My concern is with our current state’s attorney and his lenient plea-bargaining agreements, which have been associated with past felony weapon charges and have resulted in murder, suicide and other criminal acts.

Being a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, all criminal gun violence gives a black eye to all law-abiding gun owners. All felony gun violations should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, resulting in incarceration instead of plea-bargaining down to probation.

Both were excellent hires and I believe they served the office and the people of Ogle County well.

In the last 17 years, however, their paths have diverged: State’s Attorney Morrow remained in Ogle County, purchasing a home and raising his young family while serving on the boards of numerous organizations and volunteering in many capacities; he partnered with myself and Dave Smith in the private practice of law, where I watched his leadership skills mature. However, Eric returned to his first love – prosecution – and has served us well as state’s attorney since 2016.

His opponent, on the other hand, has held or applied for numerous jobs during

this time, landing for the second time in Rockford, where he is an assistant state’s attorney. He might be skilled in his work there, but the jobs of Ogle County State’s attorney and assistant Winnebago County State’s Attorney are not comparable. As a lawyer who practices regularly in both counties, I see that the so-called solutions offered in Rockford, where the courts are backlogged, inefficient and prosecutors often fail to secure convictions in violent cases, are not practices we want Ogle County to emulate.

Eric Morrow is one of the founders of the Ogle County Drug Court; he has expanded services for victims and senior citizens, and he is a fiscal conservative in the financial management of the office. Eric has proven himself uniquely qualified to continue to serve us in this important position.

4-H EVENT

Sixty take part in 4-H’s annual Day of Dabbling More than 60 youth participated in the 2020 4-H Day of Dabbling held Feb. 8 at the Oregon Church of God. Sponsored by University of Illinois Extension Ogle County, this annual event was open to all youth, ages 5-15.

It was designed to provide participants with the opportunity to explore numerous areas of 4-H project work hands-on.

Fourteen workshops were offered; each participant selected three.

Project areas touched on included: visual arts, food & nutrition, floriculture, recycling, electricity, and science.

As a result of the workshop, participants took home creations ranging from DIY signs and slime to Leather stamped keychains and flower bouquets.

Workshops were conducted by 4-H volunteers.

Special program on “truth” offered at Oregon library The Oregon Public Library will present “Sifting Through the Ashes of Truth” on March 12 at 6 p.m. in the Oregon Public Library Art Gallery.

Beginning with John Peter Altgeld, program presenter Bryan Murley will lay out an alternative to the toxic media environment that permeates our times. He will offer tips on how to enable citizens to become informed news consumers using media literacy tools online and off.

John Peter Altgeld was Illinois’ first “progressive” governor, serving from 18931897. As an immigrant, he fought for workers’ rights, women’s rights, penal reform, child labor laws, and angered industrialists by refusing to break up the Pullman Strike.

Throughout his public life, Altgeld learned much about how the press could twist and obscure the facts of events to present “fake news.”

Yes, “fake news” was as much a problem for the 19th century as it is today. The difference is that today there are more tools available to combat lies and distortions created by political operatives intent on damaging the credibility of legitimate news.

Lazyman’s Ironman The Oregon Park District has a new fitness challenge that anyone of any age and ability can participate in.

The Lazyman’s Ironman Triathlon is an opportunity for everyone who is looking for a new challenge or has ever dreamed of competing in an Ironman Triathlon.

In a traditional Ironman, participants swim-row 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run-walk 26.2 miles all in 1 day!

But don’t panic, this is the lazyman’s version and though the distances are the same, but you have 6 weeks beginning March 30 through May 9 to complete the requirements.

“Activities can be done via our stationary equipment and pool as well as outdoors on your own terms and pace,” said Tina Ketter, recreation superintendent.

“That’s 42 days to swim or

use the row machine, bike, run or walk at any pace that you choose. Individuals of all levels are encouraged to participate in this event.

“This also simultaneously gives the opportunity to train for the OPD Sprint Triathlon on July 18.

Everyone who has the courage to register for our lazyman ironman will receive a T-shirt at the conclusion of the Lazyman Ironman program.

Those who complete the full distance will receive a certificate.

“You will receive a log in sheet via email the Friday before the event kicks off! Keep this with you and track as you go. Simply submit to the OPD Fitness Center or front desk upon completion,” said Ketter.

The deadline to register is Monday, March 23. The fee is $10 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $12 for non residents.

Twenty-seven people enjoyed their evening out at Cork & Tap planting their very own succulent garden in a bowl.

Tyler Hagemann, Merlin’s Greenhouse Horticulturist, educated the participants on succulents to include planting tips, propagating, watering, fertilizing, light, and pests. Participants chose from a large variety of succulents and enjoyed planting their gardens.

Hunter safety courses are March 21-22 at preserve

The Byron Forest Preserve District will offer a free two-day Hunter Safety Education Class on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22.

The Saturday class times will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Sunday class times will be 12 noon until 4 p.m.

The class will be held at the Byron Forest Preserve District’s Jarrett Prairie Center located at 7993 North River Road, Byron.

This Illinois Department of Natural

Resources class is required in order to obtain a hunting permit. The class will cover firearm and archery safety, hunting laws and ethics.

Participants must attend both days and be able to pass a final written test.

Advance registration is required by calling the Byron Forest Preserve District at 815 234-8535 extension 200.

Register early as space for these classes fills quickly.

Six bobcats were killed in Carroll County and one each in Ogle and Whiteside County during the state bobcat season, which ended Feb. 15, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Monday.

Statewide, 1,000 permits were issued, 306 animals were harvested (the same as during the 20182019 season) and 29 roadkill bobcats were salvaged.

The percentage of bobcats taken by hunting, either by gun or archery, was 45%; trapping accounted for 46% and the rest were salvaged.

In Carroll County, five were trapped, one shot, while Ogle County’s animal was trapped and Whiteside’s was shot.

In nearby JoDaviess County, nine bobcats were taken: one was shot, six trapped and one salvaged.

In Stephenson County, two were salvaged.

Pike County led the harvest with 22 bobcats – 16 shot, six trapped.

All told, 16 cats were taken by archers this season, none in the Sauk Valley region.

This was Illinois’ fourth bobcat season.

In the release, the IDNR thanked hunters and trappers and IDNR staff who collected jaws for bobcat research at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and landowners and trappers in central Illinois who helped with bobcat research at Western Illinois University in Macomb.

“The IDNR and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fund research to continue learning about Illinois’ only feline furbearer. The recovery of this species (and many others) and continued research are possible because of the support of the sportsmen and sportswomen of Illinois.”

OBITUARIES DEAN THOMAS CUNNINGHAM Dean Thomas Cunningham, 74, passed away Nov. 30, 2019, at his home in Roseville, California.

He was born May 5, 1945, in Dixon, to John T. Cunningham, Jr. and Annabel (Stauffer) Cunningham.

Growing up in rural Polo, Dean was a 1962 graduate of Polo Community High School, attending National Science Foundation summer programs at three different colleges.

Dean earned a BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1966. Immediately following his graduation, he joined Union Carbide Corporation (Linde Division, Praxair) for a life-long career, retiring in 1999.

His work was briefly interrupted in 1967-1969 by his Army military service;

subsequent work assignments took him to both U.S. coasts, Geneva, Switzerland, and Milan, Italy. These changing locations inspired his retirement travels, cruising to and experiencing many different countries around the world with family and friends.

A life-long sports fan, Dean was an avid supporter of the UW Badgers and the Miami Dolphins. Living in California, he also found Bay Area pro teams to be entertaining and held season tickets for the Oakland Raiders.

In his early retirement, he traveled to Arizona for MLB spring training. For many years, Dean played for the Sun City Roseville Sr Softball Club, relishing the activity, camaraderie, and their out-

standing won-loss record!

Dean’s retirement also allowed him to pay closer attention to cultivating beautiful roses and Italian heirloom tomatoes. Still a little “farm boy” left in him!

Survivors include Dean’s wife, Nancy; his daughters, Jennifer and Alyssa Cunningham (Chicago, area) and son Michael (Kathleen) Cunningham (Chicago and Lake Tahoe, Nevada); Nancy’s son Christopher (Kathy) Derner, (Spanaway, Washington) and daughter Kim (Veikko) Meilonen (Lockport, New York); and five grandchildren: Michael (Gerilyn), Zachary (Melissa), Veikko, Megan,and Jenna.

Also surviving are Dean’s sisters: Carolyn Cunningham-Hillsten (Ken), Orange,

Texas and Sylvia Cunningham Howell (Thomas), West Lafayette, Indiana; and nephews Kevin (Catherine) Hillsten, Alex(Priscilla Goble) Howell and Tony (Allison) Howell. Dean was predeceased by his parents and two nieces: Denise Hillsten Taylor and Monica Elizabeth Howell.

Feb. 24 Gary D. Martin, 58, of Mt. Morris, pleaded guilty to driving while license Is revoked, a Class 4 felony. He was sentenced to 180 days periodic imprisonment and 24 months conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay total fines and costs of $979.

He is scheduled to return to court on March 20.Joseph Polizzi, 53, of Lanark was arrested for driving while license suspended and a valid Carroll County warrant after a 5:17 p.m. traffic stop in the 14000 block of West Coffman Road for an equipment violation. Polizzi was taken to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
