February Finds draws crowd to Mt. Morris Event has raised over $11,000 in eight years for Moose Lodge

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Approximately 500 people flocked to the annual February Finds Antique and Collectibles Market on Feb. 1 at Mt. Morris Moose Lodge Family Center.

More than 20 dealers occupied booths, filling the market to capacity.

“We had a great turnout, one of our highest ever,” Eden White, the event’s organizer said. “All the vendors did really well. The weather permitted and we were very pleased.”

The event served as a fundraiser this year for the Moose Lodge. Since its inception, proceeds from the event have been donated to the Mt. Morris Fire Department, Loaves & Fish food pantry, Serenity Hospice and Home, the women’s PEO and the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

Around $11,000 has been raised by February Finds in the eight years since its inception.

A broken hip earlier this month didn’t stop Josephine Chirillo from celebrating her 103rd birthday at Generations at Neighbors rehabilitation and skilled nursing community in Byron on Jan. 26.

She was joined by family and fellow residents last Sunday for her party. Chirillo isn’t from the area, but does have family here. She spent most of her life near Stamford, Connecticut and some time in Nevada with her daughter.

While many ask, Josephine says she can’t pinpoint her secret to living to 103, but her faith has helped her along.

“Along life’s way, you make a lot of mistakes,” Chirillo, born in 1917, said. “You know, when you’re young. One night, I asked God to straighten out my life. He saved my life and gave me new meaning.”

Chirillo is the oldest member of her family. She has three daughters, one son and a long list of grandchildren.

Before breaking her hip on Jan. 11, Chirillo was still mobile and moved around a lot. She had successful surgery and has been recovering well since. She hopes to be able to walk again in the future.

“My mother has touched lives all over,” Faith Stoddard, Chirillo’s daughter who lives in Washington, said. “Wherever she goes. She can’t go too far now, but she’ll be touching lives in that nursing home.”

Chirillo’s happy and positive demeanor hasn’t changed. She enjoys the fall season and painting, usually with watercolors. She makes paintings and writes things about God on them and sends them to members of her family. She calls her paintings “splashes.”

Josephine still reads and has her eyesight. Ashley Colucci, another daughter of Chirillo’s, says her mother is an inspiration to everyone she meets.

“I’ve never heard a bad word from my mother,” Colucci said. “No swearing or anything like that. She’s just wonderful.”

Colucci recently moved to the area to be closer to her mother. Chirillo smiled on Monday as she looked over the presents given to her by those that were thinking of her on her birthday.

“It was a nice time with all my family and friends,” Chirillo said.

“It was a nice birthday splash.”

Ogle Habitat for Humanity gets $30,000 grant Plans are underway to build home in Rochelle this year

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Price family lived in a two-bedroom apartment with mold, the ceiling falling in and bad wiring.

Their landlord was in poor health and didn’t improve their situation.

The family of five had few options for a way out. Until they were selected to build a house with Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County.

“They called us in for an interview, we both felt we wouldn’t get it,” April Price said. “They told us and I cried. My husband was close to tears.”

The Rochelle family now lives in a five-bedroom home that was finished in 2018.

The organization they built it with was awarded a $30,000 grant on Jan. 13 from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, which it will put towards building another house in 2020.

Vanessa White-Broome started at Habitat as executive director in 2016 and has upped the amounts she asks for in grants as her organization tries to serve more and more families.

This will be their 13th home build, along with numerous other projects like home repairs and improvements such as wheelchair ramps.

“We’re certainly increasing the number of families that we’re serving,” White-Broome said. “Last year we did six projects, four for families and then two community projects.

And then we’re building a brand new home again which costs us around $95,000. I felt I could justify writing it for $30,000. When I got the

Most of Habitat’s labor is done by volunteers, save for excavation and cement work.

The $30,000 will take care of the initial phases of the build. Much of the secondary work is often done by the families that will receive the home.

Families are required to contribute 200 “equity hours” that show that they take pride in what will become their property. The Price family put in more hours than required. The father, Derek, looked up how to install flooring on YouTube.

“We laid the floors and put up drywall,” April Price said. “Every night after work we’d come here with the kids and paint. We helped with the roof.”

Habitat prides itself on its policy of “hands up, not a hand-out.” Those that receive homes make mortgage payments to Habitat. They stay engaged throughout the mortgage and provide counseling on how to

pay for and maintain a home.

Those that apply for Habitat homes are usually unable to receive a loan due to credit issues. The Price family was turned down for each loan it applied for. Until Habitat.

“I think we’ve proven ourselves as far as our results,” White-Broome said. “In all of our years, we’ve only had one foreclosure.”

Habitat has done work in Mt. Morris, Forreston, Oregon, Polo and Rochelle. They’re currently still in the application process for who it will partner with for the 2020 house, which will be located in Rochelle on a donated lot.

Repair and add-on work in recent years has included fixing flooring and safety issues for a widow in Forreston, a handicap ramp for a homeowner in Rochelle and a complete porch for a couple in Polo.

“My thought is, the more families we can serve, the better,” WhiteBroome said. “These are repairs they couldn’t afford to do themselves.”

White-Broome believes that there is a lack of low-income and affordable housing in the county. There have been studies done that say many residents are paying exorbitant rates for substandard properties, she said.

“It’s an awesome thing to be able to get somebody into appropriate, safe housing,” White-Broome said.

“I think some people take that for granted. Not everyone has that opportunity.”

Since entering the process with Habitat, the Price’s lives have been “on an upswing.” Both April and Derek have new jobs. Their 16-yearold, Allica has the privacy she needs now. She used to share a room with 13-year-old Kadence and 6-year-old Annalise. The kids now have space, desks and closets.

“I don’t know where we’d be,” April Price said. It got us out of our comfort zones. We learned how to be home owners. It changed our lives.”

The Forreston FFA Alumni will beholding its 32nd Annual Toy Show & Craft Fair on Saturday, March 14 This event will be held in the Forreston Jr. /Sr. High School building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Toy Show will be held in the Forreston High School gym and the Craft Fair will be held in the Forreston Junior High School gym and cafeteria.

A wide variety of items will be available from vendors at this event.

“The Toy Show and Craft Fair were created to help people spend a day with friends and families as well as provide funds to support the Forreston High School Agriculture and FFA programs,” said Forreston FFA Advisor Kelley Parks.

The Toy Show will feature toy tractors, farm equipment, memorabilia, and collectibles.

Hardesty’s brother killed in WWII in France Editor’s note: Otto Dick, of Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK This is the sixth installment of a diary written by Robert Ordnung Hardesty who was born in Oregon and attended schools in Oregon including the Oregon Bible College.

Not long after Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941 and the U.S. was plunged into World War II, Robert’s brother Harold’s draft number came up and he was inducted into the U.S. Army.

He was engaged to a young lady named Beth Hoganson and they decided to marry before he left for military duty overseas.

They married and made their home with his mother and Robert on the little farm in Oregon. When Harold left for active duty in the Army Beth found a room at a home nearby.

After graduating from Oregon Bible College, Robert moved to Omaha, Nebraska in July of 1944 for his first pastorate. His mother moved with him as part of their family.

They were in Omaha only a few weeks when they received word that Harold had been killed in action in France.

The family could have had his body brought back for burial, but decided it would delay closure especially for his mother. A Memorial Service for him was held in Oregon.

His mother attended but his brother Robert was unable to attend.

A short time later mother moved to the Golden Rule Home, a Church of God home for the aged in Oregon.

That was a good move for her because she was among people she knew.

The following is an account of the Memorial Services held Sunday for Harold Hardesty.

Assembling at the Church of God Sunday afternoon, people of the community paid a last tribute to the memory of Pfc. Harold Hardesty who gave his life in the defense of his country and the principle of liberty while serving in France.

The church seating capacity was taxed by the audience which felt so deeply the loss of this young man of sterling character.

Harold Hardesty went forth from this community to help make sure that all we hold dear and that which our forefathers have defended on many battlefields in the years that have passed since we first became a nation would be maintained.

Harold graduated from Oregon High School in the Class of 1934.

He was employed at Kol-Master for five years before entering service in Company M, 119th Amphibious Force and later was advanced to private first class.

In September 1943 he was sent overseas and was with the invasion forces which landed in France where he was engaged in the assault against the Nazi Force in France.

This booklet written by Robert Hardesty on his 94th birthday about his family history is entitled The Best Of Time and the Worst of Times.

He and his brother Harold grew up on a small farm on 10th Street, now in the city limits. Three homes and a part of Jefferson School now occupy this area.

Robert lost his brother Paul Eugene when Robert was five years old. Paul Eugene died on the day of his birth. Paul is buried at Riverview Cemetery at the north edge of

Oregon.

When Robert was nine years old his father became ill with pneumonia and he died two weeks later.

Robert wrote “Suddenly, life for him

and his mother and brother Harold changed drastically.”

And finally, there was another tragedy during his lifetime in the death of his brother in France.

Institute’s director is appointed to IDNR board

Kerry Leigh, executive director of the Natural Land Institute, has been appointed by Governor J.B. Pritzker to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Advisory Board.

Leigh’s term of service will go through January 2025.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Advisory Board was established via Illinois State Statute under 20 ILCS 5/5-560 and is comprised of 13 people from across the state.

Natural Resources Advisory Board members play an important role for the Department.

While board members do not have statutory authority to bind the agency, they discuss with and can advise the agency regarding conservation, recreational opportunities, protection of lands, bodies of water and wildlife, research, land acquisition, and hunting seasons and bag limits

New 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County forms If you are a woman and you care, you will want to check out a newly formed group: 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County.

“This is a worldwide organization and there are at present 650 county chapters in the United States and Europe, but I noticed that there is not a chapter in Ogle County,” said Deanna Forrest, one of the group’s organizers. “So the three of us: myself, Linda Graber, and Debby Katzman were inspired to start a chapter.”

The group’s first meeting was scheduled for Jan. 23 at Hickory

Grove in Rochelle.

“The chapter will only meet four times per year, once in each season, and the meetings will take place at various places around the county. Each meeting will last only one hour-excluding the social hour. So it doesn’t require a lot of your time,” Forrest said.

The 46th Annual Leaf River Alumni event will be held on Saturday, March 7 at the River Valley Complex, formerly Leaf River school.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. A sandwich supper will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Volleyball games start at 5 p.m. The program to recognize the class of 1970 will begin at 6:30. The basketball game will begin at 7.

Science Siestas planned for March and April

Science Siestas are once again being offered by the University of Illinois Extension for both boys and girls.

“This year we will be offering a Science Siesta event just for boys on Friday, March 13 to Saturday, March 14, and another Science Siesta just for girls on Friday, April 3 to Saturday, April 4 both at the Discovery Center Children’s Museum in Rockford,” said Johnna Jennings, University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development Educator.

These events are open to youth in fourth to sixth grades.

“Both events will be actionpacked programs that combine hands-on science, an opportunity to meet real scientists, to learn about a particular field of science and to spend an awesome night in a museum. This is an excellent program and we are excited to have the opportunity to offer it once again,” Jennings said.

At Science Siesta the participants will interact with scientists in science career fields from throughout northern Illinois.

“We like to take the best ball player (Lambrigtsen) and make sure she didn’t catch it and have someone else handling the ball,” Rahn said.

Martin made another 3 to close the gap to 44-40 with over a minute left.

But, Oregon turned the ball over on an in-bounds pass, a carrying the ball call, a dribble off the foot and lost pass. They had 29 turnovers in the game.

“That’s horrible,” Lambrigsten said. “At the end, we wanted to make a play and make it fast. We were reacting instead of responding.”

In Bothe’s absence, Forreston was able to have a 36-30 rebounding edge.

“That had been our Achilles heel,” Rahn said. “We did a great job of blocking out. It was a key of the game.”

After losing to Oregon by four points in December, the Forreston girls basketball team had one thing on their mind.

“Redemption - that’s the word I put up on the board,” Forreston coach Brian Rahn said.

Taking the locker room message to heart, the Cardinals grabbed a 6-0 lead and never looked back in a 47-40 non-conference win on Feb. 1 in Oregon High School’s old gym.

“They weren’t going to be denied the way they came after us in the first two minutes of the game,” Oregon coach Wendy Lambrigtsen said.

Taylor Greenfield, Megan Hagemann and Alexus Houston each scored for Forreston (15-13), while Oregon (14-15) started with three turnovers and three missed shots.

Breanna DeHaan broke the drought with a steal and score, but the Hawks had to play catch up the rest of the way.

With Jenae Bothe sitting out the game because of a week-long bout with the flu, Olivia Lambrigtsen started down in the post for Oregon.

Bothe’s absence was also filled in by Lauren Montavon, who joined Lambrigtsen with 15 points each.

“It would have been wonderful to have Jenae in the post, but Lauren and Ella Martin did a nice job,” Lambrigsten said.

With Houston doing a little bit of everything for Forreston, the Cardinals took as 19-13 halftime lead. She needed to survive a bad fall in the second quarter after a collision with Lambrigtsen.

“She did as good job of battling the bumps and bruises,” Rahn said.

“In the past, that may have bothered her more. She does whatever we ask of her - points, rebounds, steals and assists.”

The two teams maintained a 6-point differential headed into the fourth quarter with Paityn Broshous making an old-fashioned 3 and regular 3 for the Cardinals in the third quarter. Martin, who had five 3s the night before against Rockford Christian, hit her first 3 of the game to keep Oregon close.

Marcos hold lead to down the Cardinals 68-53

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Playing nearly flawlessly, Polo held a 56-38 lead in the fourth quarter against Forreston on Jan. 30, a team they lost to earlier by 14 points.

However, the Marcos needed to survive a minor scare to beat their friendly rivals 68-53.

Riley Cornelius scored off a steal for Forreston and then Ethan Greenfield added another five points on one possession after Polo coach Matt Messer was whistled for two technicals.

The first was for complaining to the official that his player should not have been given a foul because he was, in fact, the “displaced player”.

The second technical and subsequent ejection was given to Messer as he questioned the severity of the technical in regards to the comment and then he made a direct statement to the official using his first name that he was “better than that”.

That cut the lead to 56-47, as Messer calmly walked to the locker room with six minutes left. Without their head coach, seniors Jace Coffey and Tucker Mumford took charge and the Marcos amped up the effort even more the rest of the way.

“He’s (Messer) a fun guy,” Coffey said. “When he went out, it put a smile on my face because of what he gives us. That made us want to give back to him even more.”

Coffey led everyone with 20 points and Mumford added 19. Just as impressively, the pair combined for 18-for-21 free throw shooting.

“We probably shoot 30-40 free throws consistently in practice,”

Mumford said. “We hadn’t shown that consistency until tonight. It’s true what they say. Free throws win basketball games.”

“We went 6-4 on the road trip and are currently 15-13 overall and 5-3 in conference,” said Rahn.

The Cardinals were hanging tough until midway through the second quarter. Chase Greenfield had a pair of 3s in the second quarter to tie the game 28-28, but Forreston closed out the first half with three turnovers.

Starting the third quarter, they had two more turnovers and Mumford had a block on them.

“Compared to last time we played (Forreston) when we struggled with the ball, we were more connected,” Coffey said. “We’ve bonded together.”

Colton Gunder, who had 10 points and did much of the ball handling in the final part of the game, helped close things out with 5-of-6 free throw shooting.

“It was a complete game from start to finish,” Messer said. “We finally had our full compliment of players and everyone executed.”

Parker Wolber got the Marcos going early with a pair of 3s, as Polo hit their four straight shots for a 12-6 lead.

Forreston took a 20-15 lead into the fourth quarter, but Polo took the lead for good at 24-23. Brody Glawe, one of the smallest players, ended the first half with an offensive board and put back, a pair of free throws and then started the third quarter for Polo with a lay-up off a steal.

Polo only had seven turnovers and made 17 of 36 shots. It was close in rebounding, with the Marcos holding a 28-25 edge.

“Seven turnovers is a big difference from before. It was horrendous,” Messer said. “Gunder really stabilized that.”

With Cornelius and Ethan Greenfield with 15 each, Forreston shot 18-for-46 and had 10 turnovers.

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Polo wrestlers traveled to Byron on Jan. 30 for the last dual meets of the season, facing the host Tigers in the opener and the Oregon Hawks in the middle meet.

Byron prevailed 48-24 and Oregon defeated the Marcos 57-21. In the nightcap, the Hawks beat the Tigers 48-30.

Wrestling started at 200 with Daniel Engel facing third ranked Peyton Lind. Engel was on his back in a chicken wing and rolled for five points before he was pinned in another chicken wing at 2:55.

Polo forfeited 285 and 106 was a double forfeit.

McKeon Crase took a forfeit at 113.

At 120, Dimetri Garza had the first takedown and scored backpoints with two chicken wings on his way to a 7-4 win.

Connor Eubanks won by forfeit at 126 and Polo forfeited 132. At 138, Avery Grenoble scored the first takedown and added points with a tilt and a chicken wing in the second.

In the third, he scored a takedown to the back in half nelson and posted an arm at 4:46.

In the 145 pound match, Michael Taylor was taken down in a bow and arrow and pinned with a chicken wing at 1:11. 152 was a forfeit and at 160, Marcus McKenna had a standing switch in

the second before he pulled a chicken wing back at 3:22.

Wyatt Queckboerner lost a high crotch to his back in the first but came back with backpoints in a cradle and a half nelson in the second and hung on for a 10-9 win.

Polo forfeited 182. At 195, Devin Rucker lost a chicken wing for three points before he was turned with a half nelson at 0:54 to end the meet.

Against Oregon, the Marcos gave up forfeits at 285 and 106. At 113, Crase got the first takedown but lost an escape and was pulled back a chicken wing twice in the second period to drop a 5-3 decision.

Polo also lost a team penalty point during that match.

At 120, Garza scored two points with a half nelson in the first period and a takedown in the third to win 6-1. The teams traded forfeits at 126 and 132, Eubanks getting the six for Polo.

Grenoble was pulled back with a wing and pinned at 2:14. Taylor lost four takedowns, the last an outside single to the back at 1:04.

The Marcos gave up forfeits at 152 and 160.

Queckboerner countered a strong shot took his opponent to his back at 3:13.

Diehl lost a counter off his head and was turned with a chicken win at 1:02. Rucker lost a takedown to the back and was down 10-2 when he was

pinned in a granby at 3:11.

In the last match, Engel got a takedown to the back and pinned in 53 seconds.

Polo will be hosting the most competitive 1A regional in all of Illinois.

On hand will be perennial state champs LenaWinslow and Dakota, with only one of them advancing onto team sectional.

“It’s not fair to those two,” Polo coach Jesse Culbertson said. “You wonder if it needs to be seeded like football.”

Dakota won state titles from 2013 to 2016 and Le-Win in 2017 and 2019. The only interruption to the NUIC dominance was in 2018 when Aurora Christian put together an all-star team, similar to what Lombard Montini used to do before they were bumped up from 2A and finally to 3A. This year, Le-Win is ranked No. 1 and Dakota No. 2. It will be the usual regional dogfight between these two for the right to advance to the sectional team competition.

Unfortunately, there always ends up being some very mediocre 1A teams that make dual team state, while one of these heavyweights sit home.

To compound matters, the IHSA raised the enrollment, which brings Dixon into the Polo regional for the first time. The Dukes finished third in the state for 2A in 2016 and have been a stalwart program for many years.

“It’s more like a sectional than a regional,” Culbertson said. “Anybody that knows anything about wrestling knows it’s a meat grinder.”

Besides the team aspect, there is the matter

of individuals trying to move on from loaded weight classes. In the past, 1A regionals have been considered weak competition, with many of them being nothing more than a cakewalk to the sectional.

In fact, some didn’t even have the requisite number of entrants to fill out the available qualifying spots. That likely went into the decision by the IHSA to add larger schools to 1A. Besides Dakota, Le-Win and Dixon, the Polo regional has teams with a long tradition of success in Oregon, Byron, and Stillman Valley.

Remember Oregon earning four state medals last year?

West Carroll is on the rise and Polo and Fulton are no slouches. Bottom line for wrestling purists - Polo is the place to be on Saturday.

With two returning state medalists in Jacob Milliman and Andrew Herbst and another topflight senior in Zach Crandall, Oregon had high hopes this year.

Those plans didn’t work out along wit ha couple other upper classmen that didn’t come out

Crandall had several concussions from football and chose not to compete. Milliman got on the mats earlier this season, but had surgery on a painful wrist in January. Herbst separated his shoulder in a dual with Dakota back in December. He will have surgery this month.

“We have several young kids that are starting to get it and step up,” coach Kip Crandall said.

“But, our regional is a rough introduction to the state series. We will have them ready and see what happens. It will be exciting.”

The Polo co-op’s best chances at the regional will be from the only two seniors - Marcus McKenna and Conner Eubanks “It will nice for them to wrestle at home and it should be standing room only,” Culbertson said.

Though the Polo regional offers a glimpse at state-quality grapplers, the real fun begins the following weekend at the Oregon sectional. Besides Polo, the Princeton regional will be sending a whole bunch of quality foes.

To me, that has been as much fun to watch as the state finals. I have yet to see a basketball game at the Blackhawk Center that matches the intensity of the crowds for sectional wrestling.

As usual, I am sending fair warning to local Oregon restaurants to be on standby for an influx of fans looking to eat that afternoon. This is an all-day affair and there is a period where the facility is cleared out prior to the finals.

High school sports bring a lot of dollars to the Oregon economy, that’s for sure.

Limited funds are again available for Waste Reduction/Recycling Grants for the 2020 fiscal year through the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD).

The grants of up to $2,000 are available to Ogle County businesses, schools, churches and non-profit organizations wishing to establish or improve on waste reduction and recycling programs and services.

Applicants must provide a minimum 20% match of the total project

cost.

Total grant funds available this year are limited to $6,000, so grants will be awarded on a competitive basis in amounts from $100 $2000, in three rounds or until funds are depleted.

The deadline for submittal of applications for the first round of grants is 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4.

The application for the grants is

simple and flexible. Businesses could use grant funds to help purchase waste reduction and recycling materials and equipment such as collection bins, carts, balers and storage containers.

Equipment needed to switch from disposable packaging to reusable packaging for products and supplies could also be considered.

Businesses are encouraged to con-

sider projects to reduce food waste or implement food waste recycling programs.

Schools may seek funds for special projects that will further a student’s understanding of how to reduce the amount of trash sent to the landfill.

The requests may be for materials and equipment, such as recycling bins/carts, videos, books, worm (vermicomposting) bins, composters, or other waste reduction or

Municipalities seeking to improve commercial, curbside, or multifamily recycling programs are encouraged to apply.

Grant applications for equipment and materials needed to improve electronics recycling options in Ogle County are also encouraged since most electronics have been banned from landfills since January of 2012.

These examples are not all inclusive and applicants are encouraged to find innovative ways to reduce waste and increase what is recycled.

The grants may not be used to pay for ongoing expenses such as staffing, collection, and hauling costs.

Priority will be given to new applicants.

All applications will be reviewed by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department and the Ogle County Board Solid Waste Committee.

Grants will be evaluated based

on the following criteria: management ability; project quality; project impact; realistic goals & expectations; accuracy of application; education potential; use of recycled content products when available; potential for waste stream diversion; and future continuity of project.

In 2018, Ogle County residents, businesses and other entities recycled approximately 31 percent of the municipal waste generated in the County.

This recycling rate is due to the efforts of many individuals doing

their part to reduce waste and recycle as much as possible at home, work and school.

OCSWMD officials urge businesses and other organizations to strive to find new ways to reduce waste and increase what gets recycled in the County.

These grants can help make that possible.

Growing hemp in Illinois will be the subject of a special program in Oregon on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The signing of the Illinois hemp bill has provided opportunities for the cultivation, distribution, and processing of hemp for fiber, grain, and CBD. University of Illinois Extension is offering the program to list options available in legal hemp production.

Fulton man gets seven years on weapons charges

Jan. 28 At approximately 3:45 p.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident in the 7000 block of Lowell Park Road.

After an investigation it was determined that a Chevrolet Avalon being driven by Jared Babler, age 22 of Mt. Morris, failed to slow for the curve at that location. Babler drove off of the roadway where the vehicle came to a stop in the snow.

As a result of the investigation Babler was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Babler sustained no injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Babler is due to appear in Ogle County Court at a later date.

Carrington Carter, 31, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for domestic battery.

Carter posted $3,000/10% bond and was released with a return court date of Feb. 14.

Michelle R. Smitherman, 37, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 8:30 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 3000 block of North Illinois 2. Smitherman was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and a tail light violation.

Smitherman was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jan. 30 Jason L. Dickson, 37, of Loves Park, was arrested at 11:29 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 112. Dickson was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Feb. 2 Dennis Vineyard, 47, of Belvidere, was arrested for criminal trespass to residence and violation of bond conditions.

Vineyard was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Richelle Marks, 42, of Polo, was arrested at 12:41 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop at the intersection of Division and Oregon streets in Polo for a moving violation. Richelle was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Feb. 3 Michael T. Dumas, 36, of Elgin, was arrested at 5:26 p.m. for driving while license suspended and speeding following a traffic stop in the 19000 block of East Illinois 64. Dumas was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu

Brionna S. Bell, 18, of Montgomery, was arrested at 7:50 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 110 northbound. Bell was also issued citations for no registration light and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Bell was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

OGLE COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow reports the following court activity.

Chad R. Slack, 44, of Rochelle, pleaded guilty on Jan. 30 to driving while license suspended, a class A misdemeanor.

He was sentenced to 12 months conditional discharge and 240 hours public service work. He also must pay total fines and costs of $ 582.

Rudy Escutia, 27, of Rochelle, pleaded guilty on Jan. 31 to aggravated battery, a class 3 felony.

He was sentenced to 180 days in jail remittable, upon successful completion of 30 months probation.

He must submit to DNA testing, not consume or possess alcohol, and cooperate and satisfactorily complete a domestic violence intervention program.

He must also submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as directed and have no contact with the victim and abide by an order of protection in this case.

He must pay total fines and costs of $4,459.

Austin M. Garner, 26, of Forreston, pleaded guilty Jan. 31 to aggravated fleeing to elude, a class 3 felony. He was sentenced to three years in the Illinois
