Traffic congestion continues at Huntley High

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Students and parents could face congestion during the back-to-school commute Aug. 20 to Huntley High School, with an area road project designed to ease the school’s traffic problems taking longer than expected.

After setting an “ambitious” timetable last spring, Superintendent John Burkey said a $1.32 million project that widens Harmony Road near the school’s entrance likely won’t start until next week.

District 158 officials originally wanted the project finished by the start of school Aug. 20 after eyeing a June construction start. But en-

gineering work between the district and county is lasting longer than planned, Burkey said.

“Do I wish it was completed?

Of course I do,” he said. “But quite honestly, if we didn’t have an ambitious timeline, it would have taken longer. I would do it the same way.”

Residents have long grumbled about the congestion from Huntley High School, located on the village’s far northwest side. Harmony Road is the only thoroughfare that students and parents can use to enter the school.

The widening project, a part of the broader Huntley High expansion underway since last year, will primarily create a new left-turn lane

along Harmony Road that diverts student traffic to a newly created parking lot, east of the school’s entrance.

School officials now think the road will be widened by October. In the meantime, traffic controllers will be onsite to help ease congestion, Burkey said.

“They still will have two lanes open during the whole widening project,” he said.

“It’s going to be a construction zone, but I don’t think it will be a terrible hindrance.”

Although the road won’t be ready by Aug. 20, the district worked with the county on installing temporary traffic lights this summer along

WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to Riley Elementary School in unincorporated Marengo on Aug. 21 to respond to statements on social media that toed the line of making threats.

Riley school administrators requested a sheriff’s office investigation after the “concerning” statements were discovered on Instagram, Undersheriff Andrew Zinke said.

The messages were vague and bizarre but stopped short of making actual threats against the school that houses about 300 children in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Still, the statements were upsetting enough to be brought to the attention of school and police officials, Zinke said.

No charges were filed against the 13-year-old boy responsible for the messages. He was processed at the sheriff’s office but ultimately released to the school for possible disciplinary measures there.

Interim Riley Superintendent Jerry Trickett said the school district asked the sheriff’s office to search the school Aug. 21 to make sure it was safe.

The district reviewed the search and statements with the sheriff’s office.

“There was no evidence that would [indicate] the facility would be unsafe to students,” Trickett said. “That’s why we chose to have school today.”

Trickett added parents were informed of the incident around 10 p.m. Aug. 21.

He said the student has been suspended indefinitely and the district is determining whether additional action needs to

Club Fusion volleyball welcomes seniors

By MAUREEN LYNCH sports@nwherald.com MARENGO – Richard Desmond learned how to play volleyball in the jungle.

It was 1968, and Desmond was serving in the Vietnam War. He and his fellow soldiers played for fun during downtime, routinely destroying the net, to their commanding officer’s chagrin.

Desmond, now 70, has found a less exotic but more sophisticated place to play. The Sun City Huntley resident is one of a handful of senior citizens from the greater McHenry County area who plays in Club Fusion’s 55-and-older volleyball league. The teams practice at the club’s Marengo facility up to three times a week in the winter and every Friday in the summer.

Most of the players met at the Huntley Park District fa-

cility, and they come from all kinds of backgrounds. Some are retired firefighters, some were teachers and others were entrepreneurs.

They all love volleyball, want to stay in shape and like the camaraderie and competition.

“This is a very nice facility and we’re very happy to be here,” Desmond said, then joked he’d like to see Fusion bring in a buffet.

About a year ago, Desmond, Dave Keys and other players felt the Huntley Park District was allocating more time to pickleball and less to volleyball. Keys, a retired Sycamore native in his 60s, called Fusion owner Bill Milborn and asked if he had courts available a few times each week during the day.

To opponents of the measure, such as Tom Eckland of Burtons Bridge, that’s the way it should be. There’s a reason he keeps a 12-foot-rowboat and two jet-propelled personal watercraft in his yard – the Fox River is a block and half from his house.

“Darned near everybody in our neighborhood has something sitting outside,” Eckland said.

Under the proposed ordinance, no recreational vehicle or the trailers licensed to transport them can be parked in a driveway for more than 30 days, or parked or stored in a front yard. It also limits the number of vehicles stored

outside to two, which must be kept at least 5 feet from a lot line. The ordinance covers vehicles such as boats, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles, travel trailers and recreational vehicles.

The ordinance will only apply to unincorporated areas and will not supersede municipal zoning and land-use ordinances.

The ordinance is not scheduled to come to a vote until next month – as is often the case with controversial county legislation, emails and websites erroneously stated the County Board planned to vote Aug. 26.

Quashing quotas

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – At least one traffic stop each work day, at least one ticket every two shifts, a 30-minute patrol of residential areas and a 30-minute patrol of commercial areas.

Those are the minimums the Crystal Lake Police Department expects of its officers, Chief James Black said.

But one of those directives will have to change starting Jan. 1 because of a new law that received the governor’s signature earlier this summer.

The law prohibits municipal, county and state law enforcement departments in Il-

linois from requiring officers to write a specific number of tickets within a set period of time and says the number of tickets issued cannot be used in performance reviews.

The idea is to prevent officers from being used as revenue generators and to keep an unfair burden off residents who might receive a ticket just because it’s the end of the month, state Rep. Barb Wheeler said.

The Fox Lake Republican signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill when it made its way to the Illinois House of Representatives, where it passed in a 106-9 vote. It had previously sailed through the Senate with

just one “no” vote.

The bill didn’t have Black’s support though – or the support of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

“I’m not in favor of ticket quotas nor do I think police should be concerned with revenue, but where it concerns me is in managing our departments,” Black said. “It’s like telling a computer programmer that he could come in and get paid but not write any computer programming.”

The head of Bull Valley’s police department, Commander Jim Page, has some concerns too – even as he reversed some previous practices that made Bull Valley notorious as

a speed trap.

“It’s ridiculous to have a quota system, but if you’re to say you’ll never have to write another ticket, ... there will always be someone who challenges the system.”

McHenry’s chief is less concerned.

“I’ve been with the police department 25 years, and the public has always had a perception that the department had a quota,” Chief John Jones said.

His department uses points of contact to track how effective employees are and whether they’re doing their jobs, he said. Stopping a vehicle and issuing a warning can be just

Brian McCafferty, also of Wonder Lake, said the proposed ordinance language “serves no other purpose other than to burden the people who chose to live in unincorporated McHenry County.”

He was one of several speakers who said he didn’t want to see McHenry County follow in the footsteps of other governments perceived to be regulation-happy.

“We don’t live in Schaumburg, and we don’t need Schaumburg-like ordinances thrust upon us,” McCafferty said.

Eckland said he may have to get rid of his 32-foot drag-behind camper for camping trips if the proposed restrictions become law, despite having more than 2 acres of land. He also said people who don’t want to see boats stored in the open shouldn’t buy houses near recreational waterways.

“I’m paying $10,000 a year in property tax just to live here. Isn’t that enough?” Eckland said.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created.

This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in.

Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League.

The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances.

Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the first female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.
