agoodrich@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Ahead of an upcoming mediation meeting, the spokeswoman for the District 158 teachers union said the union’s hope is to reach a quick resolution before the start of school.

The Huntley Education Association called for mediation June 15 after nine negotiation sessions with the Consolidated School District 158 Board of Education made “no signif-

icant progress,” HEA spokeswoman Cindy Rick said.

Still in the beginning stages of mediation, the two sides are grappling over what Rick described to be an issue of not only obtaining but retaining quality teachers with competitive pay, among other issues.

Only one mediation session has been hosted thus far, with another scheduled for Aug. 27.

“We’re hoping to look at special education teacher caseloads because they’re kind of being overwhelmed and over-

worked,” she said. “And to look at some class sizes. Some core classes have 35 kids or more.”

With 650 to 700 member teachers, the HEA is looking to negotiate both base pay as well as health insurance, Rick said.

This is not the first time in recent years negotiations between the two sides have gotten to this point or beyond.

In 2008, the union went on strike for three days, and in 2012, teachers almost went on strike after declaring an impasse over compensation.

Rick said the hope is to avoid getting to that stage through work with the mediator, who she said came from the Illinois Education Association.

The HEA union contract ended in July.

“We’re hoping to [come to a resolution] hopefully before the school year so we can start the new year with a new contract,” Rick said.

According to the district, school starts Aug. 26 for first through 12th grades and Aug. 27 for preschool and kindergarten.

Laws expand immunization requirements for students

By HANNAH PROKOP hprokop@shawmedia.com New state laws have expanded the immunization requirements for students and changed the way they get exemptions from immunizations for religious reasons.

One law being implemented for the first time this year requires students entering sixth grade and 12th grade to get meningitis shots.

McHenry County Public Health Administrator Mike Hill said the idea behind the meningitis immunization requirements is to protect children who have medical conditions that prevent them from getting certain immunizations.

“We’re trying to protect those kids by cutting down on the number of unvaccinated people that are in schools,” Hill said.

He said if a student doesn’t have the vaccine and there is a disease outbreak, he or she could be excluded from school.

Patti Secrest, school nurse at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, said, “there’s been a lot of communication” with parents regarding the new immunization requirements. “[The] meningitis immunization is an easy law for me to get behind because it definitely will save lives,” Secrest said.

Michele Knaizer, Consolidated School District 158 nurse team leader, said many students already have the meningitis vaccine. She said the district also will let people know the new requirements regarding religious exemptions.

Before Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the new legislation into law Aug. 3, parents simply could write to their local school officials explaining the vaccines were contrary to their religious beliefs.

Now that Senate Bill 1410 is law, parents who want to cite religious belief as a reason not to vaccinate will have to complete a Certificate of Religious Exemption and have it signed by a health care provider.

Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said a health care provider’s signature indicates

school officials.

The Illinois State Board of Education reports the number of religious exemptions school districts approve. he or she has informed the client about the risks of not being vaccinated, as well as the benefits of being vaccinated.

Arnold said immunizations are “the most cost-effective way to prevent vaccine-preventable illness,” and the health department encourages as many people to get the shots as possible.

She said officials are in the process of creating a religious exemption certificate, and the form should be available soon on the IDPH website.

After being rescued from a home where they had been living with 48 other dogs, six puppies were transferred from a shelter 500 miles away to Helping Paws Animal Shelter in Woodstock where they are on the road to recovery, animal care technician Stephanie Noel said.

“It’s hard to know that someone would put them through that,” Noel said. “But I know that with them here, we’re going to do everything we can to make them realize they are loved and there’s more to life than a house full of other dogs.”

The dogs – believed to be beagle and terrier mixes – had been fed but were suffering from parasites, fleas, eye infections and ear infections. They also had demodectic mange, a skin condition caused by mites that has left many of the dogs with red, irritated skin and patchy fur.

The dogs are all younger than a year, Treptow said. What their lives were like before officials can’t be certain, but the dogs’ behavior has given some clues. They aren’t familiar with leashes and being outside seemed like an adventure.

“They would just go out and roll around in the grass be-

cause it felt good and it was a new experience,” Treptow said.

It will be a few more weeks before the dogs can get to a point where they are ready to be adopted. Treptow said they first need to have their skin issues under control, then be spayed or neutered. After that will come recovery, at which point the dogs could be ready.

Some dogs will need special attention and skin treatments after being adopted, but Treptow said the shelter will work with the adoptive humans to coordinate those treatments.

The dogs are friendly, even more so now than a couple of weeks ago when they first arrived from the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley and would lie in their cages, staff said. They wag their tails and approach the staff. That’s not to say the dogs won’t need to be trained for house manners, but Treptow said they seem willing to please.

“It shows the resilience of the dogs,” Treptow said.

McHenry nursing homes feel legislation’s effects

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Hearthstone Communities “waited until the bitter end” to switch to electronic medical records.

It wasn’t because the switch wouldn’t be good for patients, Director of Development and Public Relations Dick Hatten said. It was because the nonprofit struggled to come up with the $50,000 to purchase the equipment and supplies and to train staff to make the change.

As more and more sections of the Affordable Care Act and other federal health care legislation take effect, the skilled nursing homes that largely have been unaffected by the overhaul are starting to see the impacts.

The legislation, commonly referred to as Obamacare, attempts to shift the health care system away from one focused on each individual visit and itemized care through the creation of accountable care organizations and the piloting of bundled payments to a system focused on patient outcomes and the overall health of the larger community.

The changes could lead to one-third of nursing homes in Illinois closing their doors during the next five to 10 years, said Larry Banks, the director of operations for The Springs at Crystal Lake rehabilitation center. The ones that survive will do so by focusing on long-term acute care and rehabilitation, something they can do economically.

As more accountable care organizations, which are voluntary groups of doctors, hospitals and other providers focused on providing a network of care, form and grow stronger, they establish lists of preferred nursing homes they give to patients, Banks said.

Some nursing homes, likely the poor performers, won’t end up on that list and will see the number of patients they get shrink.

The hospitals at the heart of these organizations also are coordinating care, allowing a greater number of patients to go directly home instead of spending time at a nursing home or when they do transition to a nursing home, spend-

After Advocate Health Care became an accountable care organization, the average number of days a patient stays in a nursing home dropped to the midteens from the mid-30s, Banks said.

The percentage of patients who end up back in the hospital within a certain period of time also has fallen to less than 14 percent from the mid20s, said Denise Keefe, president of Advocate’s post-acute care network.

“When you reduce the readmission rates, you reduce the total cost of care,” she said.

“That’s where everything starts to align. Those good outcomes really drive efficiency.”

Advocate now works with 37 nursing homes across the Chicago area, having its physicians and nurses follow the patient as they move from the hospital to the nursing home.

They provide scheduled and in-the-moment training and meet monthly with nursing homes to keep communication open and improve the transition process, Keefe said.

The model is just reaching the edges of McHenry County, but nursing homes such as Hearthstone are positioning themselves for the spread by improving their partnerships with their local hospitals,

which in the case of Hearthstone is Centegra Hospital – Woodstock, and watching their costs and readmission rates, Hatten said.

“There will be a lot of benefits to the consumer, to the patient, to the family,” he said.

Study finds women more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s Gender differences in disease subject of ongoing research

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – She doesn’t know how old she is, where the rings on her fingers came from or that the woman who visits her daily is her daughter.

But 88-year-old Mary Gray still can count by threes and win a game of dominoes.

And even though she might not know who she is, Gray lights up when she sees her daughter, Jeannie O’Leary, walk into her room. O’Leary lights up, too, although she said she sometimes struggles with what Alzheimer’s disease has done to her mother.

“It’s hard. You grieve over

the person you love,” O’Leary said. “You fall in love with this little person, and you’ll have to grieve all over for them.”

O’Leary isn’t alone in watching her mother disappear. New research from the Alzheimer’s Association has added more credence to what experts have said for years: Alzheimer’s disease affects women significantly more than it does men. Not only that, but women at risk of Alzheimer’s deteriorate much faster than men. The question researchers now have to answer is: Why? According to a study of 257 men and 141 women mostly in their mid-70s that took place during the course of up to eight years, the cognitive abilities in women with mild memory impairment declined twice as fast as they did in men.

For Gray, the last year’s descent was swift. Gray is in the advanced stage of Alzheimer’s disease. In the past year, her

mental capacity has dwindled to the point where she now acts like a 2- or 3-year-old, O’Leary said. While they used to be able to sew together during their daily visits, their time together now consists of folding towels or placing their feet in the fountain outside Autumn Leaves in Crystal Lake where Gray lives.

“When we moved her here, that really accelerated it,” O’Leary said. “But that’s OK.

Now she’s beyond that gray area of the fog. She’s much more at peace.”

Researchers have known for years that women were bearing the brunt of the Alzheimer’s crisis. Of the 5.3 million Americans 65 and older with Alzheimer’s, 3.2 million are women, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Dr. Joshua LaVigne, a clinical neuropsychologist and director of NeuroClinic and Assessments in McHenry said he sees a similar divide. About two-thirds of his Alzheimer’s patients are women.

“It’s a little disheartening for women, and there are women in all of our lives,” LaVigne said.

However, LaVigne said, there is something good from the most recent revelations.

While experts before believed women were disproportionately affected because they tend to live longer than men, they now have bolstered reasons to

explore other causes, such as genetic or environmental differences between the sexes.

What that means for treatment and prevention efforts isn’t clear and won’t be for sometime, LaVigne said.

“We’re just finding out that some of these differences are there,” LaVigne said. “Once we find these things we scramble to figure out why. That’s something that’s going to bear fruit in the next five to 10 years.”

The advancement that’s most important to O’Leary in the meantime is public education. She’d like to see an evolution like the one that’s pushed people’s reactions to cancer from stigma to support.

“I think Alzheimer’s, everybody hears about it, everybody knows somebody that’s got it, but a majority of people are very uncomfortable,” O’Leary said. “I mean, I didn’t even know last year how to understand it or my own mother.”

Marengo teammates mourn death of Marc Bender Former football player and 2015 graduate killed in accident on rural road

By CAITLIN SWIECA cswieca@shawmedia.com After hearing the news that his classmate and former teammate Marc Bender had been killed in an accident on a rural Boone County road on Aug. 10, Weston Shepard felt compelled to bring together some of Bender’s friends.

He texted a dozen of his teammates from last year’s Marengo football team and told them to meet him at the football field that night.

“It started as 12 people meeting at 8:30,” Shepard said.

“When I showed up at about 8:10, there were about 60 people there waiting for me on the track.”

The gathering at the high school turned into an evening of prayer and support after the death of Bender, an 18-year-old 2015 Marengo graduate who had played football and baseball for the Indians.

According to the Boone County Coroner, Bender died about 4 a.m. Aug. 10 when he was struck by a pickup truck traveling north on the 2300 block of Shattuck Road.

Upon realizing a pedestrian was in the roadway, the driver stopped and called the Sheriff’s Office. Bender was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.

The news of Bender’s death spread among his friends the afternoon of Aug. 10. Many of Bender’s friends and teammates posted tributes on social media, with several football players dedicating the upcoming season to their former teammate.

Friends described Bender as a person who always had a smile on his face and wanted to make his friends happy.

“No matter what, he wanted to just have fun,” Marengo senior Trevor Nelsen said.

“I‘ve never seen Marc upset.

I’ve never seen Marc not like someone. If you were around Marc, you know you were going to have a good time.”

Dillon Csanda, who refers to Bender as his best friend and brother, said the memories hit

him particularly hard when he approached the football field the night of Aug. 10. He and Bender bonded while working for Ohana Farms, which Csanda’s parents run, and he had fond memories of his friend from the football field.

“He’s a small kid, he’s always been small, but he was one of the toughest kids on he team,” Csanda said. “He was a great leader. He kind of kept a smile on everybody’s faces. ... Without him, football would not have been the same.”

He thought back to the team’s game against Burlington Central last year, when he and Bender had been talking on the sideline and Csanda mentioned the team needed a turnover.

“Next play, he got an inter-

ception. They caught a picture of me and him celebrating,” Csanda said. “It went in the newspaper the next day. Right when I went up to the field, I thought of that and saw the spot where it happened. I just broke down. It was very emotional for all the football players.”

Shepard led the group in prayer Aug. 10 and players said Indians football coach Matt Lynch also spoke. Former football players said the current team had discussed honoring Bender with a jersey patch or flag with his No. 12 on it but hadn’t decided on anything yet.

“The community is trying to stick together as much as we can and not let anyone try to deal with this alone,” Nelsen said.
