By ZACH BROOKE zbrooke@shawmedia.com MARENGO – A newly created, regularly scheduled classic car show debuted June 27 in Marengo after long-standing issues were resolved between organizers and residents.

The event, State Street Cruise Night, hosted at Gas & Diesel Diagnostics, 154 N. State St., was the brainchild of Shawn Lyon and his friends as a way of bringing some new entertainment to Marengo on the weekends.

“It’s someplace where people can showcase their cars,” Lyon said. “The idea behind it was to bring people into the city of Marengo to see the town, to see the businesses.”

The first cruise night, hosted in May, didn’t go smoothly. With the event being hosted alongside Railroad Street, nearby resident Don Van Winkle came over to complain about the music. When he was told by organizers that cruise nights would occur all summer, Van Winkle said he would stop it.

Alderman Dennis Hammortree got involved to try to broker a compromise, including limiting the area where the cars would park on Railroad Street.

At this point, Lyon said he considered stopping the event.

But he said the response he received from community members, including Mayor Don Lockhart, led him to try to resolve the issues.

The public response encouraged him to work with Alderman James Regelin and Assistant City Administrator Josh Blakemore to find a way to satisfy all parties involved.

“Based on all that feedback that we got that I had no idea we had, I thought, ‘Hey, maybe we shouldn’t give up so easy,’’’ Lyon said.

Lyon presented his plans for a new cruise night. The biggest change was it would be hosted within the parking lot of Gas & Diesel Diagnostics, which is owned by Lyon’s friend and co-organizer Jose Guzman. Any overflow would be limited to the area of Railroad Street directly adjacent to Gas & Diesel Diagnostics and the next-door business.

Van Winkle also attended the council meeting, where

he again voiced his concerns about noise and traffic on Railroad Street. But he sounded as though he was ready to let the organizers try again.

“I didn’t have a good first impression of the new neighbors,” Van Winkle said, adding “I believe in second chances.”

Lyon said he and his friends would make sure there would be no more loud music, no alcohol, and no loud, aggressive driving. Lyon even asked the Marengo police to show up to help with enforcement.

“Oh, we’ll be there,” Chief Joseph Hallman said.

After the meeting, Lyon said he was pleased the council offered tacit approval for the event.

“I definitely left the meeting feeling pretty good about the response I got from them,” Lyon said.

A Facebook post for the cruise said the first “sanctioned” event went well, and at least one organization used the event to promote its cause – Anderson Farm and Animal Shelter brought dogs out for adoption.

The post also said turnout for the event was smaller than expected. Still, Lyon plans to keep the event going every other Saturday for the duration of the summer. If all goes well, he said he hopes the show becomes the official cruise night of Marengo.

The next cruise night is scheduled for July 11.

MCC to offer course on women in U.S. history SHAW MEDIA CRYSTAL LAKE – The history of American women, both noble and not, from Colonial times through the 1990s will be explored in a women’s history class offered by McHenry County College.

The class, which is offered for credit during the fall semester, will be online beginning Aug. 17 through Dec. 11.

Topics to be explored through reading and online discussions include women’s suffrage, the ways in which the rights of women have evolved over time, the role women played in American

wars, and the Salem Witch Trials. Students will explore the effect of women such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Jane Addams, Abigail Adams, Harriet Tubman, Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan.

The instructor is Sarah Sullivan, a former longtime business instructor at MCC. Sullivan recently earned her master’s degree in history and also will teach U.S. History I and II in the fall.

“My goal is that students will gain an appreciation of the role and impact women have had in society and increase their awareness of the contributions of women over

time,” Sullivan said in a news release. “It’s important to know where we’ve come from in order to understand where we are today. This awareness and appreciation creates generational understanding.”

The class is a social studies elective that can be applied toward many of the associate degrees at MCC. No prerequisite is required.

Huntley welcomes two new businesses

Gusto’s Fun House will open its doors July 8 at the Huntley Outlet Center, near Route 47 and Interstate 90.

Owners Mike and Steve Guistolise will offer customers various novelty and specialty items, including gag gifts and magic tricks, according to the village’s newsletter.

The owners are planning special activities for the grand-opening weekend.

Located at 11800 Factory Shops Blvd., Gusto’s Fun House operates seven days a week, opening at 10 a.m. each day.

Dr. Mindy Nguyen, meanwhile, officially relocated her ophthalmology practice to a more prominent location in downtown Huntley.

Huntley Eye Care, 11809 Main St., now operates a storefront within the new commercial development at the former Sawyer-Kelley Mill site after spending the past seven years near the Jewel-Osco at 13312 Village Green Drive, the practice said.

The business offers a range of eye care services, including general eye exams and vision therapy.

The public is invited to a grand-opening event July 11 at the new Huntley Eye Care location. A Chinese Lion Dance will kick off the festivities, followed by a balloon artist and prize drawings.

Living in the homes of both parents may cause kids less stress

BY HANNAH PROKOP hprokop@shawmedia.com There’s a specific look to the child of divorced parents getting out of a car with mom and going into a house dragging a suitcase.

At least there is for Jim Varga, a 17-year-old from Richmond whose parents divorced in 2005. Jim had his own “my parents are divorced” suitcase, as Jim’s father’s ex-girlfriend called it.

Since Jim’s father, Ed Varga, divorced his wife, Jim primarily has lived with his father in Richmond and traveled to his mother’s home every other weekend.

Some current thinking says children of divorced parents who move back and forth between households are more stressed; however, a recent study from the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health suggests this may not be the case.

After surveying 150,000 children from 12 to 15 years old in Sweden, the study showed children who lived with both of their separated parents showed less signs of stress than the ones who lived with one parent.

Children in nuclear families showed the least signs of stress, according to the study.

Signs of stress included sleep problems, loss of appetite and sadness.

Dr. Alan Owens of Owens & Associates Counseling & Therapy Center LLC in Crystal Lake has worked with many families affected by divorce.

“Children typically do best when they have two loving parents that are concerned with their well-being,” Owens said.

He said it’s optimal if they are living together as a family, but that’s not always the case.

Large-scale blood drive put together by area students

By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – As the summer slump for blood donations is upon us, a group of conscientious students have banded together for what is shaping up to be the largest student-run blood drive in the area.

Event organizers have gone as far as to call it “the biggest lifesaving event of the summer.”

Students from 17 high schools in McHenry and Lake counties, along with McHenry County College, are joining forces for a large-scale blood drive later this month. It’s part of efforts made by Heartland Blood Centers to counter a drop in donations during summer.

Year round, Heartland Blood Centers has one goal in mind: 600 units. They need to collect 600 units of blood each day to supply 63 hospitals in Chicago and Northern Illinois.

That’s a lofty goal at any time of year, but coupled with summer vacations and a host of donors often distracted by the weather, it can be next to impossible. Other than those middle aged and older, the next biggest demographic for blood donations are those high school and college aged, Heartland’s Director of Donor Recruitment Amy Smith said.

Heartland further reports that of the 65 percent who are eligible to donate blood, only 5 percent actually do, making student donors more important.

“Summer has a severe impact on blood donations,” Smith said. “When students go on break for the summer – with 25 percent of our blood donations coming from college and high school students – it impacts our ability to collect.”

When school is in session, the blood center has “a captive audience,” Smith said.

“During the school year, we go to them,” Smith said. “Now we’re asking them to come to us. It’s much harder.”

So Heartland teamed up with area schools to offer incentives such as a DJ, photo booth, raffles and prizes to get students excited to donate blood during their summer break. In May, the students took over planning the largescale event July 24.

On June 29, students from Woodstock North High School coordinated a smaller blood drive to get a feel for what the July drive will be like. They set a goal of 30 donors but walked away with 37 blood donations that will save 111 lives, according to Heartland estimates.

“The planning part is so important,” said Annie Bartlett, a soon-to-be senior at Woodstock North who co-chaired the smaller event. “We come out with saving a lot of lives.

It’s pretty gratifying.”

Her planning partner, Tania Guarneros, told a story of being injured after falling from her bike as a 6-year-old and requiring blood donations from her parents.

“Other people don’t have that luxury, so that’s why I donate blood,” she said.

Organizers hope the student-run blood drive will triple the blood donations from

the June 29 event. It will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 24 at Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 Bull Valley Road, McHenry.

McHenry County business owners, consumers battle high egg prices

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – With 3,600 eggs coming out of the kitchen at Andy’s Restaurant in Crystal Lake weekly, co-owner Angie Angelos sees only one option to deal with the rising prices caused by the bird flu outbreak.

She has to shell out more for eggs. About $1,800 more a month, Angelos said. And she’s not alone. From restaurant owners to grocery shoppers, people are spending more on eggs since the bird flu reportedly claimed 48 million chickens and turkeys this year.

“We have to wait it out,” Angelos said. “It’s like a roller coaster. Eggs, meat, prices keep going up and down.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that nationwide 48 million chickens and turkeys have been killed since December 2014 to prevent the spread of avian influenza. Agency officials said most of those birds, 31 million, are from Iowa, the country’s top egg producing state. There have been no reports of avian flu in Illinois.

Egg prices will hit a record high in 2015, according to the USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand report published in June. According to the report, the cost of a dozen Grade A large eggs for bulk buyers in New York will average $1.80 in the fourth quarter of this year, 18 cents more than it cost the same time last year.

Since the bird flu reportedly has claimed 48 million chickens and turkeys this year, the cost of eggs will hit a record high. There have been no reports of avian flu in Illinois.

Large-volume buyers in the Midwest are paying $1.89 a dozen on average, the USDA said.

Officials caution the effects of the bird flu epidemic will linger, projecting a dozen eggs will cost an average $1.55 in the first months of 2016.

For Angelos, the costs to buy eggs in bulk more than doubled to $2.56 a dozen at its peak a month ago, she said.

Costs have gone down slightly, she said, but it’s still hurting her bottom line.

Close to 70 percent of her business is breakfast, and many of those meals include eggs. She didn’t want to push

the cost on to the customer by increasing prices, so the expensive eggs are on the restaurant’s dime.

“We can’t keep changing the costs on the menu,” Angelos said. “Basically, we’re eating the cost and that’s how you do business.”

But not all businesses can stomach the added cost. At Wonder Foods in Wonder Lake, customers encountered prices as high as $6.65 for an 18-pack of eggs, manager Bob Hartmann said. He said customers recoiled at the price, which was double the normal cost. The cost for an 18-pack

hovers around $5.39 this week.

“We don’t sell nearly as many,” Hartmann said. “People have changed their habits already. They might decide not to make scrambled eggs, and make French toast instead and only use one egg.”

The sharp increase spurred dozens of questions from customers. Hartmann said he answered by showing a letter from the store’s supplier tying the exponential climb to the wipeout of egg-laying hens.

“That’s why the prices were so high,” Hartmann said. “Because chickens were out of business.”

There is more shifting in family court, where Judge Christopher Harmon will preside over Cowlin’s cases. This leaves a vacancy on the bench in the specialty family courts.

The 22nd Circuit previously announced it is accepting applications for the open associate judgeship. Associate judges are selected by the county’s eight elected circuit judges. Applications are due by July 17, but a decision is not expected

until mid- to late fall, court officials said.

It will be up to the Supreme Court to determine how to fill Graham’s position. Graham is retiring before his term is up, so the person appointed will have to seek re-election in the fall.

Varga and his ex-wife have a joint custody agreement, with Varga being the custodial parent who Jim primarily lives with.

Varga said they came to this decision because he had more resources in the area, such as family and friends, while his ex-wife’s family is from Georgia.

The word “custody” may not even be used in divorce law in the future if SB 57 is passed in Illinois. The bill was passed in both houses May 31 and has not yet been sent to the governor.

Gunnar Gitlin, attorney at the Gitlin Law Firm in Woodstock, said part of the bill suggests omitting the word “custody” and instead referring to it as “allocation of parenting time.”

The idea, Gitlin said, is that parents will focus less on titles, custody and visitation, and more on making agreements and schedules that are less traditionally based.

“What you could see is it does go along with the trend of considering awards that are more generous for parenting time for the parent who isn’t considered the residential parent,” Gitlin said.

Varga said one truth he’s learned and shares with Jim is something he picked up from a pamphlet at a truck stop that read: “Divorce, the death that never ends.”

“Everybody is affected by it, and it never stops,” Varga said.

Although there have been times when Jim wanted to go back to his Richmond home while he was at his mother’s house, he said moving back and forth between houses isn’t a stressful situation for him.

“I like the set system as it is, and I would say it’s a good one and it works for me,” Jim said.

He said he thinks he’d get used to any situation if he was forced to live in it, and for him, it’s helpful to have both parents involved in his life.
