Area library hosts Lincoln exhibit

By SHAWN SHINNEMAN sshinneman@shawmedia.com HARVARD – If the box office circa 2012 wasn’t proof enough, a traveling Abraham Lincoln library exhibit – perched in Harvard for the next six weeks – is reaffirming the country’s deep interest in the top-hatted historical figure.

“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” is in the fifth year of an extended six-year tour across 250 sites. This week, it landed at Harvard Diggins Library, 900 E. McKinley St., its only stop in McHenry County, where it will remain through Sept. 5.

“I think Lincoln has always been a figure of great interest to Americans,” said Susan Brandehoff, project director at the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office. “People feel different ways about him. And I think this

exhibit ... tries to objectively examine how he approached all the really important issues that he faced during his presidency.”

Originally sent on the road in 2009 for a 50-site tour, the exhibit was backed by the National Endowment for the Humanities for another 200 sites in 2011 based on the response from libraries and patrons.

“We’ve had high attendance figures,” Brandehoff said. “All the libraries are doing programs, and we’ve had really good attendance at programs.

It’s been a very successful exhibit.”

The American Library Association worked with NEH and the National Constitution Center to make the exhibit happen.

Harvard Diggins library staff applied to bring the exhibit to town in 2011 after the relaunch.

They were given a 2014 date – toward the back end of the tour, which will end in December 2015.

“We thought 2014 was so far away,” said Karen Sutera, director at Harvard Diggins.

Volunteers helped set up the exhibit after its arrival this week.

Sutera said she’s excited to see the reception from the community. It includes interactive media elements, including viewing military battles through an 1860s box camera.

The library will hold a musical performance to accompany the display.

Chris Vallillo will perform “Abraham Lincoln in Song” at 2 p.m. The program – which is free – combines narration, storytelling and music.

It’s another step toward presenting Lincoln in his entirety – a task Brandehoff said is noble.

“I think he gets painted with a broad brush, and this is an exhibit that gets behind that persona he has for Americans and really investigates what did happen during his presidency,” she said.

More county, state residents learning beekeeping

By SHAWN SHINNEMAN sshinneman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Don Burda doesn’t go to meetings of the Northern Illinois Beekeepers Association anymore. Too crowded.

The Woodstock-based, veteran beekeeper preferred the more intimate feel of meetings held in the middle of last decade, when 15-or-so people would sit around a table and talk strategy. Now, the meetings draw crowds of more than 100, he said.

The days when beekeeping was a secret trade reserved for a brave few are – in McHenry County as in much

of Illinois – quickly disappearing.

“With all the media coverage on colony collapse disorder, people are much more aware nowadays on the bee’s importance to humankind,” said Steve Chard, supervisor of the apiary inspection program at the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Only one case of colony collapse disorder – which, as the name suggests, wipes out entire colonies of bees – was ever confirmed in Illinois. But regardless of the threat’s significance, reports of CCD across the country got people talking about

Road salt pinch hits home Some local entities without bid will refill supply on hand

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com Highway and public works departments statewide are scrambling to secure supplies of road salt after learning a number of them were dropped from Illinois’ annual bid.

Summer is typically when local governments buy salt by the ton through the Department of Central Management Services, the state agency in charge of procuring supplies in bulk to lower the cost.

But CMS told a number of governments statewide about a week and a half ago no salt companies submitted bids to resupply them.

If they can’t find vendors, next winter could be a slippery one for drivers in McHenry County and elsewhere.

A likely reason for the shortage is the demand part of the law of supply and demand – it’s way up, given the brutal winter we just survived stretched salt supplies not just in the Midwest but in much of the country as well.

“People are just darn intrigued with bees,” he said.

The number of registered beekeepers in the state has more than doubled in the past decade, from 1,117 in 2003 to 2,519 in 2013, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The latter figure represents a significant jump from 2012, when 1,825 beekeepers were registered in Illinois, and the highest number of Illinois beekeepers since 1990, when 2,705 were registered.

Some beekeepers have only recently discovered they are required to register, which could play a factor in the increases. But Chard said that doesn’t account for the entirety of the bump.

Burda, who owns Homestead Orchard in Woodstock with his wife, noticed the increases in about 2006, when students from a new McHenry County College program started joining the beekeeper club’s monthly meetings at the McHenry County Farm Bureau.

“You go back maybe three, four years, there were so many people that we couldn’t fit them into the room,” he said.

Burda’s main focus is on producing fruit, a task for which he employs the help of honey bees, whose honey he also bottles and sells. He was reminded how important they are this spring when his cherry trees blossomed early – before he’d received his yearly shipment of the natural pollinators.

Honey bees pollinate about a third of the plants that produce food humans consume, Chard said.

That fact, and the fact wild bee populations continue to dwindle nationwide, places a further importance on beekeepers.

In McHenry County, if interest in MCC’s program is any indicator, the number will continue to rise, said Claudia Terrones, the college’s coordinator of personal development programs.

MCC has offered three bee keeping courses each spring since 2006. The classes are noncredit and provided through the continuing education department. Between 10 and 20 people typically attend each class, Terrones said.

“There’s a huge interest in beekeeping in McHenry County,” she said.

Huntley tightens solicitor regulations

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Solicitors wanting to sell services throughout Huntley neighborhoods now will have to undergo an in-depth background check and pay a new permit fee before visiting residents’ doorsteps.

Weekly complaints from residents about solicitors and a recent uptick in door-to-door roofers after the spring thunderstorms motivated Huntley officials to tighten regulations on solicitation, said Deputy Police Chief Michael Klunk.

The Huntley Police Department will enforce the new regulations after Village Board members unanimously approved the updated solicitor

rules during a meeting July 24.

“The new rules are a little more strict,” Klunk said. “The big difference really is the fees involved and the fingerprinting process that we didn’t do in the past. It’s a more indepth background check.”

Each solicitor, even ones representing the same company, will have to be fingerprinted, allowing police to thoroughly verify a salesperson’s background.

The solicitor also will have to cover the costs of the fingerprinting and pay a $25 permit application fee. The total costs could equal up to $60, Klunk said.

Commercial canvassers, temporary merchants and peddlers selling products from public places also are in-

cluded in the expanded regulations. The minimum penalty for violating the ordinance increased from $5 to $50.

Huntley hadn’t updated its solicitation ordinance since creating one in the late 1990s.

In the past, solicitors underwent a minimal background check with police and didn’t pay permitting fees.

Door-to-door solicitors also seem to visit Huntley more frequently because neighboring communities already have deeper background checks and fees placed on them, Klunk said.

In 2013, the village issued 378 solicitor permits, a significant increase from the 174 permits issued in 2012, police records show.

lier this month, village trustees and staff said the tighter regulations are meant to keep neighborhoods safer and discourage less reputable solicitors from knocking on doors.

“Although the rules and regulations to solicit door to door will be more strict, the code will provide a safer environment for residents,” Assistant Village Manager Lisa Armour said during a board meeting last week.

Similar to the old rules, the police can deny an applicant if a solicitor has been convicted of a felony within the past five years, previously violated the village’s solicitation ordinance or had a permit revoked.

The new regulations take effect immediately.

forcing them to scramble to find alternatives. The winter that followed was one of the snowiest since the National Weather Service started keeping records.

Increased demand, of course, not only makes salt or any product harder to get but also increases the cost, Crystal Lake Public Works Director Victor Ramirez said. The city, like the county, did not get a bid.

“Those locations that did get [bid] offers were told that the per-ton price went up to between $70 and $140 a ton. Last year we paid $59,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez said the $257,000 the city budgeted for road salt has fortunately given it the wiggle room to cover cost increases. Crystal Lake has about 1,000 tons on hand for its 165 lane miles and anticipates needing 4,000 tons to get through next winter.

The city of McHenry also found itself without a road salt bidder and presently only has about 500 tons, but the city will be able to get at least 2,400 tons from its supplier last year, Public Works Director Jon Schmitt said. The contract the city signed in 2013 contained a renewal clause that allowed McHenry to secure the amount this year, at a price not to exceed 5 percent more than the $58.96 per ton it paid.

That would give the city just less than the 3,000 tons it predicts it will need next winter to keep its 125 lane miles clear, but the city still wants a cushion, Schmitt said.

McHenry is knocking down its bid from 1,600 to 1,000 tons as CMS is preparing to send out a second bid for any of the governments who did not get any salt.

McHenry County last week submitted a bid on its own, independent of CMS, pricing out quantities of 5,000, 8,000 or 10,000 tons, according to county records. Crystal Lake also decided to bid for 4,000 tons on its own and not go through CMS. Going solo may give the city more flexibility and improve its odds, Ramirez said.

“We also felt that possible requesting on an individual basis, and for a much smaller amount than the [CMS] aggregate, we may have a better shot at being selected by one of the firms and possibly getting a good bid,” Ramirez said.
