McHenry County Conservation District expanding hay program for more revenue

WOODSTOCK – The hope behind a new pilot program being tested by the McHenry County Conservation District is that it brings in a few extra dollars while managing weeds and brush, the natural resources manager said.

The pilot program expands on the conservation district’s hay leases, a program in which people pay the district to cut down certain fields and sell or use the hay they collect.

In turn, the district doesn’t have to handle the weed and brush management, Natu-

ral Resources Manager Brad Woodson said.

The conservation district is accepting bids on an additional handful of acreage – less than 20 – that would be treated the same way.

This land, however, is not whole fields, Woodson said.

It is the 30-foot borders that surround the fields the conservation district leases out for agricultural use, plus some restored prairies.

The strips of land are designed to prevent erosion and nutrients from being washed away, Woodson said.

The two sections to be tested are the borders surrounding

agricultural fields in the Kishwaukee corridor near Marengo, and another set of borders surrounding prairie land near Goose Lake outside Hebron.

If the program works, another 350 acres could be added to the conservation district’s hay lease program, Woodson said. Each acre would bring in on average $20 to $30 depending on the quality of the hay.

The only downside, Woodson said, is that mowing can disrupt nesting birds, something that could be minimized by mowing later in the season but, in turn, would make it difficult to manage the weeds.

The pilot program follows in the wake of a series of changes the conservation district has been making in an effort to diversify its revenue streams. The conservation district also has changed some of its program fees, has started charging campers for firewood – which now is collected inhouse instead of bought – and has stepped up its fundraising through its foundation.

Scientific illustrations on display in Ringwood SHAW MEDIA RINGWOOD – A collection of scientific illustrations drawn by local artists will be on display at the Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park this summer.

The exhibit, titled “Capturing the Essence: connecting people and nature through art,” is a juried exhibit of works by members of the Great Lakes Chapter of the Guild of

Natural Science Illustrators.

It will be on display through July 31.

The exhibit is free and open to the public when the visitor center is open, which is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The visitor center is off the intersection of Route 31 and Harts Road near Ringwood.

Unlike creative artists who are permitted and even ex-

pected to take artistic liberties with their subjects, the scientific illustrator must strive for representational accuracy and should have sufficient understanding of the subject matter so the illustration appears natural and lifelike rather than mechanical.

These artists’ renderings are designed for reproduction in professional or popular journals in the field of natural sciences, in textbooks and as

museum exhibits. Members of the Great Lakes Chapter work with scientists, publishers, universities, botanic gardens and museums.

Some of the artists use traditional mediums, such as pencil, watercolor and ink, while others are digital artists.

Many combine the two.

Marengo settles debate over public works director oversight

By ZACH BROOKE zbrooke@shawmedia.com MARENGO – After eight weeks of debate stretching over four regular meetings, the Marengo City Council has decided not to change the oversight process for the city’s public works director position.

The contentious issue followed an often meandering path of possible resolutions, all spurred by a vacancy in the position. Marengo has been without a public works director since April, when former public works director Jayson Shull was fired by the mayor with the consent of the City Council. During the run-

up to Shull’s termination, various ambiguities emerged in the position’s oversight process.

Under the current reading of city code, the mayor chooses a candidate and presents that person to the City Council for a confirmation vote. The public works director and a police chief are the only department

head positions that operate in this manner.

With the vacancy, City Administrator Gary Boden asked the City Council to clarify the city administrator’s relationship with the public works director, particularly with regard to hiring and firing.

Boden said that aldermen had reached out to him in private

to say the city administrator should have more control over the position.

The council debated possible changes for weeks, with multiple members indicating willingness to give the city administrator full control of hiring, but hesitancy when it came to a potential termination.

“Whether it’s you or somebody else, that man can be manipulated by his job, and we’re the one paying for it,” Alderman Brett Martin said.

After the June 8 City Council meeting, Boden drafted a memo that acknowledged the City Council seemed to be leaning toward keeping the

HUNTLEY – After nearly two weeks of digging, Huntley High School teacher Erik Lachel and three members of his eight-student team are looking down at perfectly square hole in the ground.

Over the past few days, the team has carefully excavated the site – located just a few feet away from a historic farmhouse – including a 1934 John Deere pendant and woman’s necklace.

Now all that’s left is flat chunks of tan stone, which the team thinks may be part of the house’s original foundation, or part of an abandoned and buried-over the garden path.

“Look at the size of them.

They look like steppingstones,” said Megan Polentini, a Huntley High School senior.

The hole is one of several they’ve made at the Mongerson Farm, a secluded historic farmhouse close to the exact center of Kane County. The Mongerson Farm is part of the Garfield Farm and Inn Museum, a 281-acre registered historical site that preserves the hardscrabble history and culture of some of Illinois’ 19th century forebears.

“These kids come from a community that was based in farming, and they don’t know anything about it,” said Lachel, who added he is always trying to bring state history into his U.S. history courses whenever he can find space.

This project, however, is actually an extension of another of Lachel’s classes: anthropology. It’s one of only a handful of high school anthropology courses in the state.

Lachel had wanted to include excavation since he began teaching the course four semesters ago.

“The vision was, I’d have my own anthropology class with a field component,” Lachel said.

To realize his vision, Lachel teamed up with Jim Yingst, the director of archaeology at Garfield Farm. At the time, Yingst’s team was primarily engaged with assisting construction efforts at the Garfield Farm and Inn a half-mile down the road. They

were excited to supervise and assist Lachel’s team on their research endeavors.

“This is the first professional investigation [of the Mongerson Farm],” Yingst said, who hopes there will be more to come. “It’s a cumulative-type of knowledge increase.”

Lachel also would like to return for more fieldwork, even though the program is not technically a Huntley High School summer class and he doesn’t get paid for his time.

He hopes to tweak the program next year, starting student recruitment early in the school year before kids have signed up for other summer courses or are mentally checked out of class. Eventually, Lachel hopes the anthropology class and fieldwork can become eligible for college accreditation.

That would be helpful for his students, many of whom seem to have big plans for after high school.

Hunched over a dishpan of muddy water, Cramer scrubbed debris from collected artifacts with a toothbrush.

According to him, this is not what he anticipated when he signed up for the project. He thought it would be a lot of digging random holes.

Yet with the help of Lachel and Yingst he learned how exacting archaeology can be.

The experience, Cramer said, “helps us understand where everything is and how it came to be there.”

And he appreciates the opportunity and the teacher that made it possible.

“Mr. Lachel is one of the most influential teachers I had in high school,” Cramer said.

Another recent graduate, Deena Vecchiollo, also had some misconceptions coming

into the program.

“I didn’t think it would be so labor intensive,” Vecchiollo said, calling the work “back-breaking.”

But she, too, thinks it has been worth it. And while their two-week immersion into to hands-on research has come to an end, for some of Lachel’s students, it may be just be the beginning of their time in the field.

Marengo’s Mariah Dionne becomes newspaper’s Player of the Year

By ALEX KANTECKI akantecki@shawmedia.com Before her sophomore season, Mariah Dionne jotted down her personal goals onto blank sheets of paper, slapped tape on the back and stuck them to her bedroom wall.

Some – such as her goal to hit more than four home runs (her freshman total) – were reached rather quickly. Others – such as her goal to strike out 300 batters – weren’t reached at all.

Those pieces of paper stayed up the entire spring, serving as sort of a visual reminder for Dionne, the twotime defending Big Northern Conference East Division Pitcher of the Year.

“Last year (2014), I was that little freshman,” said Dionne, “and I didn’t know if

It took only 10 games into her freshman season for softball coach Dwain Nance to make the switch – penciling in Dionne as the No. 1 pitcher over then-senior Abby Kissack, a four-year varsity player and current first-team All-N4C player for Rockford’s Rock Valley College.

Dionne held the role from there, posting a 2.25 ERA and 21-5 record with 242 strikeouts in 174 innings. The Indians advanced all the way to the sectional final with Dionne in the circle, where Marengo would lose to Ster-

ling for the second year in a row.

She committed to improving on both sides of the ball – pitching and hitting – and doing her best to make sure the Indians wouldn’t fall in the sectional championship for the third straight season.

Dionne headed to Geneva in the offseason to work with pitching instructor Jill Waldron, whose students also include Crystal Lake Central graduate and Bradley-bound Megan Mahaffy. Her dad, Bob, now estimates she is “doing something pitching-related 10 months out of

the year.”

“She’s pretty driven,” said Nance, who remembers seeing Mariah as a hard-throwing but wild 10-year-old for the Marengo-Union Girls Softball program. “She’s around the softball diamond ... quite a bit – maybe more than anybody else on the team. It’s really cool to see her enthusiasm for her game.”

The hard work and enthusiasm turned into a historic season for Dionne, who became Marengo’s first sophomore to be named to the Illinois Coaches Association

Class 3A All-State first team.

For her accomplishments, Dionne is the Northwest Herald Softball Player of the Year, as chosen by the sports staff with input from area coaches.

Marengo right fielder Veronica Ruelius, who set the Indians’ single-season record with 17 home runs and ended her four-year varsity career with a school-record 35 home runs, and McHenry junior shortstop Alex Martens, who led all area players with a .546 batting average, also were considered for the honor.

He’d like to see police departments adopt that mentality when they do their own educational outreach, he said.

McHenry Deputy Police Chief John Birk said he would be open to the idea if there’s justifiable safety reasoning behind it, but he would be concerned about bicyclists trying to control the lane on roads with speed limits such as 45 mph.

Crystal Lake Police Chief James Black had concerns of his own, particularly with road rage and incidents of impatience.

“I am an avid cyclist myself, so I certainly appreciate the safety issue, and I understand what bicyclists are trying to do, but as a police officer and the chief, I see an issue with traffic safety,” Black said. “People don’t see motorcycles right now, let alone bicycles.”

County Hispanics add to record population speaking English

If she wants to master the English language, she should study, the 45-year-old wife and mother thought. And if she wants to get a job that pays better than her gig in fast food, Castanon, a Mexican immigrant, told herself she must learn English.

“I need it to better understand people,” Castanon said.

“I started five or six years ago learning English.”

These students are among a growing group of Hispanics trudging through the nuances of the English language.

A recent study from the Pew Research Center shows a record 32 million Hispanics living in the United States speak English proficiently. English-speaking Hispanics accounted for 68 percent of the Hispanic population in 2013, the study showed, up from 59 percent in 2000.

The study attributes the increase to the number of U.S.-born Hispanics, a growing segment of the Hispanic population. In 2013, there were nearly twice as many U.S.born Hispanics as there were foreign-born, 35 million to 19 million, respectively. U.S.born Hispanics also have a

CRYSTAL LAKE – Eberhard Veit caught up to Todd Nelson as he was riding his bike from his home in Cary to his job in Barrington one summer six years ago.

He had a petition he wanted Nelson to sign.

Veit, the president of McHenry County Bicycle Advocates, had been campaigning to get Rakow Road restriped with bike lanes.

The advocacy group tries to get involved whenever road projects get planned and pushes for the project to meet Complete Streets guidelines, a movement started by the National Complete Streets Coalition in 2004 that pushes for streets to be designed with all its users in mind.

That means pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public transit users.

“We’re advocating for a bicycle-friendly network throughout the county,” Veit said. “We’d like to see more people using bicycles for transportation as well as recreation. We want a functioning network of solutions that

The group’s work has grown beyond just advocating the Complete Streets concept.

Nelson, who ended up joining the advocacy group and eventually becoming its vice president, is trying to get the education and awareness side of things going, he said.

The cities of Crystal Lake and McHenry passed Bike Safety Week proclamations this spring in addition to the regular events they help host or promote, such as the Night Owl Ride.

Nelson sees the proclamations as a step in the right direction, one he’d like to see followed by a promotion of the Cycling Savvy program. He became an instructor for the

median age of half that of foreign-born Hispanics.

Castanon is a living example of that statistic. Immigrating from Mexico in 2002, she lives in Woodstock with her husband and her son, Alan, 12.

They speak Spanish at home, but Castanon said she also sometimes gets informal English lessons from her son.

“He’s up there,” she said.

“He is my teacher.”

The reasons for non-native English speakers to learn the language include finding a job or earning their high school equivalency, said Tom Pierce, executive director of adult education at McHenry County College. Learning English often is the first or second step, he said.

“If they’re interested at all, we try to find them a pathway,” Pierce said. “We know when they finish our program, they’re probably not ready for college, and they might not be ready for a job that can provide them a family-providing wage.”

According to the Pew study, 75 percent of Hispanics who do not speak English at all have less than a high school education, compared with 18 percent of Hispanics who speak English very well.

Virgilio Zelaya, who immigrated from Honduras eight years ago, understands why educational attainment might be more difficult for non-English speakers. Zelaya, 34, said

“The only outstanding question is what role does the City Council want the city administrator to play in the employment status of the Public Works Director,” the letter stated.

Specifically, Boden asked whether the council should grant the city administrator oversight of the hiring process, including interviewing, evaluating and presenting finalists to a search and screen committee made up in part of City Council members.

At this week’s council meeting, Boden insisted he wasn’t playing politics or making a power grab with the appointment, but instead was trying to lay out a clear definition for each entity’s specific role in recruiting and supervising the public works director.

“I am trying my darndest to present a nonpolitical position in this. Some people might want to put me in a political position, but that is not my intention,” Boden said.

Alderman Dennis Hammortree rejected that assessment, saying he viewed the request as a power grab by the city administrator.

“This is the fourth time we had this discussion,” Hammortree said. “At the last meeting, it was pretty crystal clear ... what direction we’re going. But now, we get put back on the Garygo-round, and we’re having this discussion again because we’re so confused.”

“Really, Dennis? I’m offended,” Boden replied.

Aldermen Michael Smith and Nicole DeBoer voiced support for a search and screen committee proposal. No other present members joined them in supporting the measure, however, and the proposal died without a formal vote.

Now that the question has been settled, the city can begin the process of filling the role of public works director, whose duties have been taken over

by Boden and Assistant City Administrator Josh Blakemore while the office remains vacant.

Nobody understood me.

I remember one day I went to the store and somebody wanted to talk to me, and I just ran away because I was so scared.”

Zelaya took English and

GED classes at MCC during the day while working at a bar at night. After earning his GED and completing ESL classes, he finished a certificate in manufacturing design technologies in December.

He’s taken some college classes and plans to earn an associate degree.

He still practices his English. He watches movies in English that he knows in Span-

ish, and reads books in the same way. Now, Zelaya doesn’t avoid the grocery store for fear of having to speak to someone.

In fact, he’s an assistant manager in the produce section at Joseph’s Marketplace in Crystal Lake.

“My English is not perfect,” Zelaya said. “But I can speak.

I can have communication. I can be a social person. I feel good about it.”

After allowing only one run against Kaneland in the state semifinal, Dionne allowed one earned run in a 2-1 loss to Washington in the championship. She didn’t walk a batter in those two games, working both sides of the plate and never giving into an opposing batter’s strengths.

She ended her sophomore season with a 1.82 ERA, a 26-4 record and 266 strikeouts in 192 innings. Dionne even became a two-way threat, hitting .455 with 12 home runs, 10 doubles and 49 RBIs. Marengo finished 35-7 and one win short of tying the re-

cord-setting 2012 team, which went 36-6 and finished runner-up at state, falling by the same 2-1 score in the final to Glenbard South.

Dionne, who is on pace for more than 1,000 strikeouts in her career, said her most memorable moment of the season wasn’t advancing to the state tournament; rather, it was the Indians’ 5-4 win over Glenbard South at the Ballpark in Rosemont, which ended a lengthy winless streak against the Raiders that spanned eight years.

This offseason, Dionne will continue to do what she does best.

“Practice – a lot of it,” said Dionne, who will play in various college exposure tournaments with her travel soft-

ball team, the Bartlett Silver Hawks, in addition to working with Olen McGhee III, a personal trainer at Deep Impact Performance Training in Mundelein.

“I just work hard at what I do, and I try to better myself, whether it’s working on my spin technique or working on my drive off to get stronger.”

Dionne tore down the pieces of paper on her bedroom wall after Marengo’s season ended, but she’s already thinking of goals for her junior year, including the one that got away – 300 strikeouts, which would top now-team manager Lindsay Melson’s 299 strikeouts in 2012.

“Yeah, of course,” she laughed, “that one will be on my wall again.”
