McHENRY – Deputy Bill Wacaser was in a good mood. It’s hot, but not too hot. The sun was shining, and he had just started his shift on the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.

Wacaser was meandering along the Fox River when he stops a boat of suntanned young men for what deputies call a BSI, or a boat safety inspection.

The boaters were cooperative with Wacaser as he went over the checklist. “Do you have life jackets?” “Let me see your fire extinguisher.” “Can I take a look at your motor.”

EAST PEORIA – “Is this seat taken,” the woman with the white hair asked, pointing to the folding chair directly behind home plate.

She set a scorebook on the table and pulled two freshly sharpened pencils from the pocket of her floral-print shirt.

Now she was ready to fulfill her duty as the Marengo softball team’s unofficial, official scorekeeper. Or maybe official, unofficial scorekeeper.

Either way, she neatly filled in the Marengo and Washington lineups before the Class 3A softball state championship game. Then, she started to fill me in on her life.

She told me about how she boarded a bus in Marengo at 6 a.m. and rode 2 1/2 hours down Route 39 and then 24 and then that backroad that went “wiggle, waggle, wiggle, waggle” all the way to the ballpark.

I asked for her name.

“Mary,” she said, extending a hand.

She pointed her pencil toward the third- Mary b a s e d u g o u t . Montgomery The coach over there, (Marengo assistant) Wayne Montgomery, is her oldest of five children. She also has a set of “twins,” two daughters born on the same day ... seven years apart.

“They’re my twins,” she said, repeating the punchline.

We both laughed.

Mary’s kids were the ones who got her interested in softball. She umpired for years and coached a team of 13- to 15-year-olds to the championship. The trophy is somewhere in her house. Or maybe she gave it to Wayne. She couldn’t remember.

But those days are done.

“Now, I just keep score,” she

said, adding that she doesn’t make it to as many games as she used to. Too busy.

“It seems the older I get,” the 79-year-old said. “the less time I have.”

Mary, an avid bowler and golfer, probably would have tried out for the teams in high school. But, when she graduated from Harvard in 1954, there weren’t any sports for girls.

She’s glad that changed.

In fact, she wishes more girls would take advantage of the opportunity. Maybe they think the coach is too tough.

“I think he’s fine,” she said.

“But I’m nasty.”

She seemed sweet.

Mary paused and again extended her pencil, this time toward the Washington runner on third base.

“They’re going to bunt,” she said.

Sure enough, the batter squared around. Marengo third baseman Allison Jasinski scooped the ball and nabbed the

runner speeding home on the squeeze play for the second out of the second inning. Mary neatly wrote “5-2” in her scorebook.

She tracked each pitch, marking balls and strikes and following each of the batters around the base paths with her pencil. In an era of iPads that compute statistics in real time and smartphones that provide live updates via Twitter, she was a refreshing throwback.

At the end of each inning, she tallied up the pitches, hits, errors and runs and said the totals aloud. When the batters came around for the second time, she reminded us who struck out and who popped up.

Mary was like my own personal color commentator.

In the bottom of the fourth, Leah Secor came to the plate with a runner on second. The Indians were running out of outs in their season and Mary sensed it. Secor struck out looking on a ball low and inside.

“Come on,” Mary said loud enough for the umpire to hear.

“That’s so inside.”

Maybe she was nasty, like she said. But only a little.

“Well, what the umpire says is law,” Mary said. “Not a thing we can do about it now.”

Mary looked up from her scorebook and noticed me scribbling in my tiny notebook. She gave me the look a grandmother gives you when you walk into her house in the winter with no coat.

“You can have a page from my scorebook if you’d like,” she said.

That’s OK. Another reporter is covering the specifics of the game, I told her. I’m writing about something else.

“The highlights,” she smiled.

Huntley libary kicks off summer reading program

By ZACH BROOKE zbrooke@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – With schools out, community libraries become go-to learning spaces for children. For more than 20 years, the Huntley Area Public Library has capitalized on this by offering a summer reading program for area children and adults.

The 2015 annual Summer Reading Program kicked off last week. There are three classes of readers. The first includes children through grade six. The second covers teens in grades seven through 12. Adults can participate, too, as part of the final age 18 and older group.

Throughout the summer, participants in each group can win prizes if they meet designated reading goals, with a final drawing at the end of the program to

determine grand prize winners.

The program has proved popular in years past, to total enrollment ranging between 3,000 and 5,000. And according to library director Frank Novak, the library averages about 1,200 signups on the first day of the program.

This year’s registration kickoff seemed to be at least on par with that number, with more than 500 signups in the first three hours, according to Doug Cataldo, the library’s marketing and technology director.

Anecdotal evidence suggested it might be a record event.

“It feels busier today than in the past,” reference librarian Susan Oberhauser said.

Shane Daffron, 9, and Nora Stevenson, 10, were among the throngs of readers eager to enter the reading competition.

Asked why he came to the event, Shane replied, “because I love reading.”

“He likes graphic novels,” his mother, Jane, said.

Nora has similar tastes, having just finished up the Percy Jackson & the Olympians comics. She’s also closing in on completing the Harry Potter novels, currently reading the final book in the series.

Like Shane, Nora also came with her mother, Heather, to sign up for the program, although the Kona Ice truck parked outside also was a crucial factor in making the trip.

The program is sponsored by the Huntley Library Friends Foundation, which also was on hand to talk about their fall fundraiser: a miniature gold tournament The program ends Aug. 8.

Generosity grows at area farm Gardeners rent plots at Soulful Prairies and donate crops

McConnell, of Wonder Lake, gardens on a plot at Soulful Prairies in Woodstock through the Grow and Share program. Started

in 2013 by Soulful Prairie’s owner Linda Bruce, the program allows gardeners to rent a 30-by-30-foot plot for $50 under the condition they donate at least 20 percent of their produce.

Nonprofit organizations can use a plot for free.

“It’s wonderful,” McConnell said. “Most gardens overproduce for one family. Linda’s helping us by allowing us to use her property, and we can pay it forward.”

Bruce and her family bought the former orchard and petting zoo at 4706 Alden Road, Woodstock, in 2009. After rehabilitating the land, they grew pumpkins on the patch along Alden Road and donated the

profits. A year later, Bruce turned that patch into land for the grow and share.

“To me, it’s just about sharing and knowing there are people out there who are in need,” Bruce said. “And it’s so fun because every garden is totally different.

You just learn a lot by looking around at other people and talking.”

In the past three seasons, Bruce estimates renters have donated more than 5,600 pounds to local food pantries, churches and people in need. People have claimed 15 plots, and Bruce said she could fit more than 15 additional plots.

All renters are required to grow without using pesticides, and have the help of mulch and water Bruce supplies. This year, growers also could get some assistance from Dan Pilguy, a Palatine native who runs a community-supported agriculture farm in Iowa with a college classmate. Pilguy has built a shed and claimed a large plot at Soulful Prairies, meaning other gardeners can feed off his expertise.

Auditing firm says Huntley financial 2nd judge disclosures are model of transparency to retire

Huntley didn’t need to be forced to take this step, however.

“You all have been doing this for quite an extended period of time,” said auditor Fred Lantz, of certified public accounting firm Sikich, at the most recent Huntley Village Board meeting. Lantz also com-

As he finished with the first group, a man and woman drove a small, tan boat past creating waves in their path.

One: it’s a no-wake zone, and two: Wacaser’s boat lights are on, meaning other boaters should create no wake as they pass.

Wacaser shouted for the woman to stop her boat. She appeared to struggle with the throttle. The whole ordeal ended when she slowly collided her vessel directly into the sheriff’s office boat.

Lucky for her, Wacaser was understanding. He spoke with the woman, who admitted she didn’t have much boating experience. He continued through his second safety inspection of the day, and told the couple to get their throttle looked at and told them to be safe.

The man took over the wheel as they parted ways.

“That stop with the lady just shows you how difficult boat stops can be on the water,” said Marine Unit Cmdr.

Huntley’s Comprehensive Annual Finance Report for fiscal 2014 received a “clean” unqualified opinion from Sikich – something granted to only one in 20 communities across Illinois, and to less than 0.3 percent nationwide.

The clean opinion certifies the auditor found the CAFR information was represented accurately with no irregularities or misrepresentations when reviewing the village’s financial materials.

At the end of 2014, the Vil-

lage Board controlled more than $235 million in assets, with more than $30 million of that stored in cash and investments. The cost to provide village services in 2014 was found to be $23.5 million.

One portion of the report was singled-out by Lantz as especially noteworthy. He said the “financial analysis of the village as a whole” portion of the report has served as a model for local governments across the country.

“We have seen this portion of your [management’s discussion and analysis] copied and reproduced in other gov-

ernments because you guys do such a good job of helping explain in layperson’s terminology what is often a very, very complex issue,” Lantz said.

Huntley Village Manager Dave Johnson said after the meeting that the commendation is a reflection of the village’s effort to provide the greatest amount of transparency.

“Whether it’s with the audit or the citizen’s information center ... we take providing that information to our constituents very seriously,” Johnson said.

north to the middle of Pistakee Lake before jurisdiction turns over to Lake County, where the more active portion of the Chain O’ Lakes is located, Marvin said.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit consists of 11 part-time seasonal officers on five boats.

Their season began a few weeks ago and lasts through October.

They invited the Northwest Herald for a ride along.

“We do [BSIs] on a fairly regular basis,” Marvin said.

“It gives us a chance to talk to boaters, to talk about the new laws.”

A second new piece of legislation will soon require boat drivers born after 1998 to take a boater safety course through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, or one of its approved courses. That law goes into effect next season.

Finally, under a new law, boats can now be the subject to civil forfeiture if involved in criminal activity, such as multiple arrests for operating while intoxicated, or other serious boating crimes, Marvin said.

Contrary to popular belief, OWIs don’t make up the majority of citations the Marine Unit issues. Safety violations, such as a child without a life vest, are most common, Marvin said. The department wrote 55 citations last year, responded to two boat collisions and conducted 400 safety inspections.

“We’re really out there for everyone’s safety,” Marvin said. “ We feel the vast majority are happy we’re out there.

“The objective that the sheriff wants is he wants everybody to have a good time, but he wants to make sure they do it in a safe and courteous manner.”

cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – It appears there could be two openings on the bench after a second McHenry County judge announced his retirement last week.

Judge Robert Beaderstadt will retire June 30. He made the announcement to court officials June 8.

“My experience on the bench has been rewarding, inspirational and fulfilling. It was never my intent to have this judgeship be my career’s final resting place,” Beaderstadt said in a letter to courthouse staff.

Beaderstadt, an associate judge, has been on the bench for eight years and presides primarily over criminal cases. He previously spent several years as a top prosecutor with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Judge Gordon Graham announced he will retire in September. Graham is an elected circuit judge with nearly 20 years on the bench. He presides over one of the 22nd Judicial Circuit’s two criminal felony courtrooms.

There are many moving parts in deciding how to fill these vacancies. The Illinois Supreme Court likely will appoint someone to fill the remainder of Graham’s term, however Court Administrator Dan Wallis said the high court could decide to leave the position open.

The local circuit has 19 judges including Chief Judge Michael Sullivan – eight are elected circuit judges and 11 are associate judges.

A likely scenario is that a circuit judge will take over Graham’s courtroom, and one of the current associate judges will be promoted to a full circuit judge.

Combined with Beaderstadt’s departure, this leaves two open associate judgeships, assuming the state Supreme Court grants the 22nd Circuit permission to fill the openings.

Circuit judges are elected to six-year terms. Whoever is appointed to fill Graham’s vacancy must seek election in November 2016 to keep the position.

Once seated, circuit judges are re-elected through unopposed retention races that ask voters whether the judge should remain on the bench.
