MARENGO – A local construction company later this year plans to build homes and duplexes in Marengo, marking a renewal of residential construction seldom seen lately in the city.

Once it officially secures financing in May, Brackmann Construction will build the

new homes on 122 lots in the Brookside Meadows subdivision, located on the southeastern end of Marengo.

It marks the first time Marengo has seen a home built in the past three years, when Brackmann Construction built a home and a couple of duplexes at the subdivision, said Corey Brackmann, who oversees sales at the family-owned company.

“It’s extremely good. It’s important for a community to grow,” Brackmann said. “It helps with property values.

It’s creating jobs. It creates everything.”

The Marengo company opened the 230-unit subdivision in the mid-2000s but struggled to complete the housing project after the economic recession hit, Brackmann said.

District 154 superintendent earns honor

MARENGO – Statewide education officials recognized a Marengo superintendent for exemplary leadership in public education.

District 154 Superintendent Dan Bertrand was one of 26 school superintendents and principals throughout Illi- Dan Bertrand nois recognized as a school administrator of distinction during a recent awards luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield.

Gov. Bruce Rauner, along with officials from the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Association of School Administrators and the Illinois Principals Association, honored the 26 administrators.

Administrators who belong to IASA’s Kishwaukee Region selected Bertrand for the award. He said in a news release he was particularly proud to meet leadership criteria for the honor.

“Our mission at Marengo Community High School is, ‘Where learning is valued and excellence is the standard.’ I have always tried to remain focused on student learning and excellence,” Bertrand said. “I am fortunate to have worked with an outstanding staff at MCHS who has made this mission a reality for our students.”

CRYSTAL LAKE – Sixteen-year-old Jason Lunstrum on Thursday jumped out of a silver Ford and thrust both fists triumphantly in the air, all of a sudden the owner of the brand-new vehicle.

The Hampshire High School junior was one of two students from 15 area high schools to receive this overwhelming prize as part of Operation Click, a peer-run program sponsored by AAA Chicago that promotes safe teen driving.

“Honestly, it was so just so exciting,” Lunstrum said.

“When I turned the key and the lights went on, it was like, ‘Wow, I actually just won a car.’”

Around since 1998 when seat belt compliance in Crystal Lake schools stood at about 70 to 80 percent, Operation Click now operates in 42 high schools in northern Illinois and Wisconsin, program Vice President Nicholas Pyan said. He added the local schools now have a compliance rate of 99 to 100 percent.

t Cary-Grove High School, gone are the days of having students type their bylines to see them in print later that month.

Devin Hester, faculty sponsor for the school’s extracurricular newspaper program, said it was probably about four or five years ago that the elective journalism course was dissolved into an after-school activity and a year ago when it started producing an exclusively online publication.

“Obviously, our readership went down compared

to when you could put a hard copy directly in front of students,” Hester said, adding the focus now is on new media, such as social media platforms, photos and video.

“But there is a step back in the audience, which I think kind of deflates the kids.

Mental Health Board starts prevention program

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Prompted by changing suicide statistics, the McHenry County Mental Health Board is launching a new training program aimed at helping the community prevent residents from taking their own lives.

Health board Executive Director Scott Block said 25 leaders from different pockets of the community will become certified in the QPR Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention in June. After they are trained, those 25 people will host seminars during the next three years with community groups.

“The more people you reach to help them learn sign and symptom recognition and what to do, the better the community will be,” Block said. “This is bringing in that shared responsibility. It’s not something that’s owned by the behavioral health community or the law enforcement or faith community. It’s bringing everyone together.”

The program will cost about $10,000, which Block said will be covered by the health board, with some assistance from the McHenry County Community Foundation.

An acronym for “question, persuade and refer,” the QPR program is designed to teach people to question someone showing signs of being suicidal, persuade them to seek and accept help and refer them to resources, Block said.

It’s a necessary initiative, Block said, because statistics show suicide has been on the rise in McHenry County in the past five years. The McHenry County Coroner’s office reported 31 suicides in 2013 compared to 17 in 2008. In the first six months of 2014, which is all the office had available, the coroner’s office reported 14 suicides.

McHENRY – The Diaper Bank of Northern Illinois is looking for a new home, but finding a place is proving difficult for the nonprofit organization because the group needs a lot of space at a low price.

The diaper bank is looking for a combination of warehouse and office space

totaling between 2,500 and 5,000 square feet. They need an overhead door, a service door, restroom facilities, heat and electricity. They have a budget of $500 a month for rent.

“We have no income coming in other than donations,” board member Vern Schiller said. “Most of the donations coming in are in the form of diapers.

“It’s a tall order.”

The organization is asking for help to find a new location and it doesn’t have to be in McHenry, Schiller said.

The diaper bank, which was started in 2009 by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in McHenry, coordinates with 15 area agencies to distribute 250,000 diapers a year to low-income families, seniors and disabled children and adults.

It provides diapers to five

food pantries, three senior services, Turning Point of McHenry County, several pregnancy support centers and several churches.

The McHenry-based diaper bank previously had housed its diapers in the back of Eckel’s McHenry Flea Market, at Route 120 and Third Street, but lost its lease when the building was sold.

A tangible newspaper produced as part of a high school course is a thing of the past at all School District 155 schools.

At Crystal Lake South, physical newspapers folded this year, Activities Director Matt Koll said. The students in the after-school program focus more on taking pictures, and the articles that do come out appear on the school’s general website. “[For the journalism elective], student interest was declining to the point where we could no longer have the course,” Koll said, adding the elective was discontinued four years ago.

This is a trend experts outside of McHenry County said is becoming more evident.

“With the push toward a 21st-century curriculum, I think there’s a push to focus less on electives than on core courses,” said Stan Zoller, a director for the Journalism Education Association, a national organization for teachers and advisers of journalism. “I think kids load up on AP classes, and in some cases, they don’t have time to expend energy to do electives like journalism.”

Still, interest isn’t waning at all local high schools.

At Huntley High School and Johnsburg High School, print newspapers still come out of in-school courses – courses that are at high capacity this year, advisers said.

It’s not that kids in Huntley are necessarily more interested in one day writing for a major daily, he said. In fact, while lessons on the inverted pyramid and writing are emphasized, Brown said he doesn’t think of his course as a place for lessons specifically on journalism.

“Ninety-five percent of the kids in this program do not pursue journalism as career,” he said. “But that’s not the point – it’s the other skills you can pick up, like writing, layout, collaboration and leadership.”

Despite some local schools losing tangible newspapers, a 2011 survey conducted by the Center for Scholastic Journalism at Kent State University in Ohio found a majority 64 percent of schools surveyed

do still have newspapers.

However, the study was the first of its kind and, therefore, does not provide perspective on whether the percentage is higher, lower or in line with years prior.

For Hester at Cary-Grove, his ideal version of the program would revert back to a print edition.

“But you’ve got to meet the kids where they’re at, and they’re digital,” he said, adding that doesn’t necessarily mean the foundation of journalism isn’t there. “The element of asking good questions, telling good stories – that’s still there. They’re still responding to that in a powerful way, so if you’re a traditionalist like me, that’s something to hang your hat on.”

And while the future of journalism as a profession

doesn’t appear promising – employment of reporters, correspondents and broadcast news analysts is projected to decline 13 percent by 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics – proof of that response is still evident in some McHenry County students, albeit, apparently not an overwhelming number.

Eighteen-year-old Abbey Nimrick said enrolling in Johnsburg High School’s Intro to Journalism course is one of the best decisions she has ever made.

“It’s because of that that I know what I want to do,” said Nimrick, the sports editor of the Johnsburg Weekly News.

“Next year, I want to be at St. Ambrose majoring in journalism ... I think I’d like to be writing for a newspaper some day.”

“Minors could, without so much more than a click on the computer, order and receive this type of powdered substance,” Althoff said. “There is no method to track it or determine who is buying it.”

State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, who voted for the prohibition, said powdered alcohol products pose personal safety issues, since the powdered alcohol absorbs quicker and can make people feel heavily intoxicated.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Ira Silverstein, D-Chicago, now awaits House action.

State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, said he doesn’t know enough yet about the products but said a prohibition on powdered alcohol might be appropriate.

“I can’t see any good for it, ever,” Franks said. “At first blush, it seems to make sense not to be selling this stuff, but I need to hear more about it.”

Among the event’s several speakers was Michael Ploszek, vice president of ambulatory services and operations at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, which is

a longtime supporter of Operation Click.

Ploszek told the story of three young people who were spared in a car wreck because of the seat belts they chose to wear. He went on to describe the successful and happy lives those people have lived, later revealing they were his own three children.

“Look what happens when we make the right choices,” he said. “Every time you get into a car, think about that

and make the right choices.”

Local high schools participating included Crystal Lake South and Central, McHenry East and West, Prairie Ridge, Cary-Grove, Huntley, Hampshire and St. Edward, among others.

The 26 other safe drivers who did not win a car didn’t leave empty-handed. Each received a $50 gift card for WalMart and a $10 gift card for Buffalo Wild Wings.

As for the second lucky winner, it was 16-year-old Sar-

ah Dart from McHenry East High School.

After the lights starting flashing and the engine began rumbling, Dart got out of the car slowly and clearly stunned. Before turning to excited friends in amazement, she reiterated the importance of the program and the reason they were all there.

“People should always drive safe because it could save your life,” she said, adding humorously, “and in this case, get you a car.”

HUNTLEY – Residents with an eye for photography and ones with an eye for historical preservation will help mark Look at Local History Month in Huntley.

The annual awareness month is meant to celebrate the village’s history and remember the figures and events that helped shape Huntley, said Donna Britton, chairwoman of the Huntley Historic Preservation Commission.

“If we don’t do things to remember history, it might be forgotten and pushed aside,” she said.

Representatives from the newly formed Huntley Historical Alliance have organized various events and recognitions throughout May. To start the month, the Village Board issued a proclamation April 30, declaring May as Look at Local History Month in Huntley.

At the board meeting, the preservation commission also will recognize Huntley homeowners who renovated their historic homes and preserved the historical significance of the properties, Britton said.

The commission will give three Pride in Preservation awards this year to homeowners.

Members from the historical alliance this week also will judge contest entries from a historical photo contest, with the winners set to be revealed at the village farmers market May 23. Representatives from the commission, the library, Park District and Huntley Historical Society make up the alliance.

The contest asked amateur photographers in Huntley to submit photos of a modern village scene and compare them to vintage photos of the same scene. Residents at the farmers market also will be able to vote on the photos. Additionally, the village’s historical groups this month are planning to reach out to homeowners along Second Street, one of the oldest parts of Huntley. The outreach is meant to educate and encourage the owners to historically designate their properties, Britton said.

Federal regulators have approved a new form of booze that combines powder and water to create a standard mixed drink, but area state lawmakers don’t want it sold and distributed in Illinois.

Many other lawmakers feel the same, as legislators in 39 states have introduced 77 bills in 2015 that either prohibit or regulate the sale and distribution of powdered alcohol products, according to the

National Conference of State Legislatures.

The flurry of legislative activity comes after Palcohol, a company looking to sell the powdered form of alcohol, successfully gained federal approval earlier this spring to market the product.

A bill that recently cleared the Illinois Senate on a 56-0 vote would ban the sale and distribution of the product throughout the state. Sen. Pam Althoff, R-McHenry, said she voted for the bill after hearing that underage kids

“It’s a great experience for the kids,” Wright said.

“There’s a lot of talent in this room. This is fun. It shows off the talent in this area really well.”

Huntley’s D.J. Cruz won the 3-point contest for the boys with nine and then beat the girls champion, Jacobs’ Jessica Powell, in a shoot-off.

product, Palcohol has fired back, detailing numerous reasons on its website why a product ban is bad.

Among the reasons: Bans would create a black market for the product and underage kids would be deterred by Palcohol’s cost, which is four times greater than liquid alcohol. It also would be difficult to spike a drink with Palcohol, since it needs to be stirred and takes longer to dissolve.

More affordable than single-family homes, duplexes and triplexes are in high demand with adults 55 and older who either have retired or are approaching retirement, Brackmann said. The multifamily units will feature an association that takes care of outdoor maintenance of the properties, he said.

The company is expected to move forward with the project by mid-May, once it closes on a deal with a private investor from Arlington Heights.

Brackmann Construction will build and market the new properties, as the investor finances the project, Brackmann said.

The two parties also have to make infrastructure upgrades within Brookside Meadows, as part of the negotiation with city officials. The subdivision will see additional street lighting, pavement and vegetation.

The total investment into Brookside Meadows is estimated to be about $1.6 million, Brackmann said.

“It’s a sizable investment, but we were able to get it done,” he said. “It was nice to see the city work with us and be able to salvage [Brookside Meadows].”

Under Bertrand’s tenure, the high school also has raised its average composite ACT score from 19.5 nine years ago to 21.8 and increased Advanced Placement course offerings, according to the district.

The high school also was one of the first in the county to start a 1:1 program that put a computer in the hands of each student – an initiative Bertrand spearheaded.
