Benson’s hiring will not become official until District 158’s next school board meeting. The board met Thursday and is scheduled to meet June 19.

Huntley athletic director Michelle Jakubowski could not comment specifically on who had been hired for the job.

“We interviewed this week, and an offer has been put out there,” Jakubowski said. “Nothing is definite now, so I don’t have any more comment.”

B e n s o n guided Marengo to a 20-11 record, its best since the Indians were 27-3 in 2000. The Indians finished Will Benson second in the Big Northern Conference East Division. He previously coached at Harvard from 2010 through 2012, where his teams were 26-58 in three seasons.

Benson, a Crystal Lake South graduate, coached for one season in 2013 as Jacobs’ sophomore boys basketball coach. Benson was teaching physical education, health and driver education at Harvard while coaching at other schools the past two years.

Jakubowski said earlier Huntley was growing so rapidly there are several teaching openings for next year,

including in the P.E. department.

Benson, 46-69 in four seasons as a head coach, would take over for Marty Manning, whose teams were 162-68 in eight seasons at Huntley.

Manning was announced as Schaumburg’s new head coach this month. The Red Raiders have won four consecutive Fox Valley Conference Valley Division championships and won Class 4A regional titles three of the past four seasons.

Huntley’s enrollment for 2013-14 is 2,462, but projections have the high school enrollment approaching 3,000 in a few years. Huntley also will break ground this summer on a new field house.

Those factors, along with Manning’s teams’ success, made the Huntley position an attractive one.

and JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – State Rep. Jack Franks called on Gov. Pat Quinn to fire the state lottery operator after it has failed to reach contractually stipulated goals the first three years of the contract.

The Marengo Democrat held a news conference Wednesday in Springfield to pressure the governor to end the agreement with Northstar Lottery Group, the private company Quinn chose to head the state lottery program.

Franks said the lottery operator is costing the state hundreds of millions of dollars in management fees

while underperforming – costing hundreds of millions of dollars more.

Franks also told the Northwest Herald the contract was “almost preordained” to Northstar.

“This was his baby, 100 percent,” Franks said. “Now it’s a question of the governor’s inability to govern that he allows this to go on rather than siding with the taxpayers.”

Franks’ presentation Wednesday showed Northstar is expected to miss its promised profit target by more than $400 million in the first three years of the deal.

In the first year of the contract, Northstar fell short $68 million on its $822.8 million net income target. The company was $170 million short of the $947.1 million second-year target and is on track to be $201 million short of the $980 million goal at the end of this fiscal year.

Franks also pointed out

the service’s inability to drive more retailers to the program. The lottery had a goal to bring 458 corporate retailers in and are yet to bring any, according to Franks’ presentation. About 400 independent retailers have joined, about 450 short of the 850 independent retailer goal, the presentation shows.

Franks said reforming the lottery service would be a step toward providing Illinois taxpayers with the return on investment they deserve.

“I’m not going to sit back while [Quinn] tells everyone we have to raise taxes – this is the only way,” Franks said.

“It’s not the only way.”

Quinn has come under fire lately for alleged political hiring at the Illinois Department of Transportation. A legislative panel also recently has granted itself subpoena powers to look into spending within Quinn’s Neighborhood Recovery Initiative.

Health officials offer rabies protection tips SHAW MEDIA WOODSTOCK – McHenry County Department of Health officials remind residents bat season is here, so it’s time to think about protecting your family and pets from rabies exposure.

If a bat is found in the home, contain the bat in a room by closing the door or placing a blanket on it and immediately calling Animal Control at 815459-6222.

To test bats for rabies, it is important they be in good condition (i.e. head is intact) – either alive or recently deceased, health officials said.

Only in cases of confirmed exposure will bats be submitted for testing, according to Illinois Department of Public Health protocol. Specimens in good condition who test negative for rabies eliminate the need for rabies treatment following human exposure.

So far in 2014, no bats have tested positive for rabies in McHenry County. Last year, the McHenry County Department of Health reported two rabid bats, with the Illinois Department of Public Health reporting 55 statewide.

The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid exposure. For questions about exposure or to determine the need for treatment, call the health department’s Communicable Disease Program at 815-334-4500.

Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus which attacks the central nervous system and only can be confirmed in a laboratory.

Keeping cats and dogs up to date with vaccinations will not only keep them from getting rabies but also provide a barrier of protection for you if your animal is bitten by a rabid animal.

Most bats leave in the fall or winter to hibernate, so these are the best times to “batproof” your home.

Residents should take a “hands off” approach to wild animals to reduce risk of exposure. Children should also be educated about the dangers.

By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The last time Ronnie Bianchi’s name occupied this space, it was after police surrounded his Wonder Lake home as part of an early morning drug raid.

Authorities led Bianchi off in handcuffs and charged him with felony possession of a controlled substance.

This time Bianchi’s name makes it on the front page, it’s because he was celebrating a victory over drug addiction.

Bianchi, who is not related to the McHenry County state’s attorney, was one of six men who graduated May 13 from the county’s Drug Court program. Together, the six, all recovering heroin addicts, marked 2,102 days of sobriety.

Had they typically been prosecuted, they were facing 13 years in prison – at a minimum. They were instead recommended for Drug Court as an alternative to traditional prosecution.

Participation in the drug court program means drug treatment, frequently checking in with program officials, appearing in court and submitting to drug screens. Some also may be required to attend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Another requirement for graduation is a full year of sobriety.

“You guys know better than anybody – this is not an easy program to complete,” said Scott Block, director of the program.

The goal is to reduce recidivism and substance abuse among the program’s nonviolent offenders and save money on costly prosecutions and incarceration at the same time.

Ninety-one people have participated in the drug court, including 16 who have graduated since the program started in 2011. At least 80 of those were heroin addicts.

“I was a slave to my own addiction,” said Ronnie, 221 days sober. “I knew if I went to the Department of Corrections, all that would come from it is I would be a better criminal when I came out.”

s golf courses around the nation continue to close at a rapid rate, some local clubs have found success.

The National Golf Foundation reported more golf courses closed than opened in 2013 for the eighth consecutive year with 14 courses opening and 157.5 closing. The foundation measures every nine holes as half a course. In McHenry County, several local courses have closed, changed hands, faced foreclosure or been taken over by other companies in recent years.

The trend, which has seen 643 18hole golf courses close since 2006, does not concern Foxford Hills Golf Club general manager John Miles, who said the industry still is recovering from oversaturation.

“I don’t think it has contracted to the point where there will be no more closures,” Miles said. “Clubs will still be challenged. People are playing on price alone and not nec-

essarily the quality. I think that will continue to go on for the foreseeable future.”

Plum Tree National Golf Club may be the latest course to close.

Calls to the course have gone unanswered in recent weeks, and golfers have moved their events to other courses, according to officials at the Harvard Chamber of Commerce.

Of the 157.5 courses closed in 2013, 66 percent charged less than $40 during peak hours. Foxford Hills Golf Club has not dipped below the threshold, and Miles said club officials have created other ways to attract players other than just discounted rates.

New this year is a PGA Junior Golf League for players 13 years old and younger. He said the team would play groups from other area clubs and help spark interest in a key demographic moving forward.

“We’re going to see that older pop-

ulation go away slowly,” Miles said.

“The demographic has changed.”

It also is important to offer events out of the ordinary as people have less free time and more options, he said. Club events such as Pars Under the Stars give golfers the chance to play on an illuminated course with glow-in-the-dark golf balls. The annual, 72-player event sold out in less than two weeks.

While Foxford Hills has navigated the challenges facing public golf courses, private clubs also face difficulties, although not as many, said Mike Picciano, head golf professional at Bull Valley Golf Club in Woodstock.

Private courses have been much more successful in recent years, as only six of the 157.5 courses closed

the past year were private.

“As a private club, it is a little different,” Picciano said. “You have that built in group of members so there isn’t that struggle for us to continuously fight the price wars with discounting green fees.”

Bull Valley Golf Club hasn’t been immune to the struggles of the wider golf industry. It was purchased for $7.7 million in 2005, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. On the brink of foreclosure in 2011, it was rescued by Capmark Bank in Utah for less than $4 million before being sold to the Rabine Group for less than $2 million in 2012. In 2013, Rabine brought in KemperSports to manage its day-to-day operations. KemperSports manages golf courses across the country and is

no stranger to taking over financially strapped courses. It was hired in 2010 to turn around Turnberry Country Club in Lakewood.

Picciano said private clubs also must evolve with the times if they want to remain successful.

With more competition for people’s time and money, Picciano said the golf industry as a whole needs to adapt to the fast-moving pace of today whether it is offering threehole options or charging by time on the course instead of by 18- or 9-hole packages.

“Time is incredibly valuable to people, and we need to address that concern,” he said. “We have to keep getting people to want to come out, whether that is for four and half hours or a half hour.”
