HUNTLEY – Village trustees recently shuffled about $350,000 within the budget to cover downtown renovation work the state originally agreed to pay, as Huntley officials look to move on without an Amtrak station.

Based on information they’ve received in Springfield, village officials believe

the Amtrak passenger rail line former Gov. Pat Quinn once promised to connect Chicago and Rockford – with stops in Huntley, Elgin and Belvidere – will not happen, even as Gov. Bruce Rauner continues to review major statewide construction projects.

As one of his first official actions in office, Rauner signed an executive order that froze discretionary state spending and barred agencies

from awarding contracts until July 1. The order consequently put the $223 million passenger rail project on hold.

“At this point, we kind of see the handwriting on the wall and have decided to move forward, thinking that the passenger rail line is not going to proceed,” Village Manager Dave Johnson said.

Huntley trustees late last week officially moved about $350,000 within the village bud-

get to cover downtown parking lot improvements that state transportation officials had agreed to pay. State officials last fall signed a $3.55 million agreement with Huntley that set a construction timetable for a new downtown Amtrak station.

Huntley starts $915,000 in roadwork Police charge

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Construction crews in June will start resurfacing nearly 3 miles of combined roads throughout Huntley, as part of $915,000 in local road repairs this summer.

Hoffman Estates-based Plote Construction will grind about 2 inches of asphalt and then resurface the western half of the Wing Pointe subdivision in Huntley, along with North Street, east of Route 47 to Woodstock Street, said village engineer Tim Farrell.

Third Street, between Woodstock and Church streets, near downtown Huntley will be reconstructed, Far-

rell said. Plote crews also will extend a sidewalk along Sun City Boulevard to Vineyard Drive, as part of the village’s annual road maintenance program this year.

“In the neighborhood areas, it will improve the character of the neighborhood with newer looking roads,” Farrell said. “It will extend the life of the pavement and infrastructure.”

Since the late 2000s, village officials have worked to repair older roads in the village’s control. The roads slated for construction this year haven’t been resurfaced in the past 12 to 15 years, Farrell said.

Village trustees approved

Plote’s $816,350 construction bid late last week. Along with engineering costs, the maintenance program this year totals $915,000.

The roadwork should begin in early June and conclude by early August, Farrell said.

Minor traffic disruptions also are expected during the summertime construction.

Residents who live in the western portion of Wing Pointe won’t be able to park along the street during daytime hours, Farrell said.

Traffic flaggers also will assist motorists through the roads slated for resurfacing work, since construction will reduce the roads to one lane, he said.

2 in string of burglaries

MARENGO – Police have charged a 20-year-old Marengo man and a juvenile in connection with a string of car burglaries in Marengo that happened earlier this month.

Bradley J. Lamkin, of the 900 block of Briden Drive, was charged with seven counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, six counts of theft less than $500 and one count of theft more than $500, according to a news release from the Marengo Police Department.

Online records show Lamkin is being held in McHenry County Jail on $7,650 bond. He was due in court at 9 a.m. May 15.

A juvenile is accused of theft/possession of stolen property in connection with the same car burglaries, which took place during the weekend of May 2, police said.

Marengo Police Chief Joseph Hallman said police served Lamkin while he was in jail for an unrelated incident.

When sheriff’s police arrested Lamkin in the unrelated crime, he had items from the car burglaries, Hallman said.

Police said the vehicles burglarized were unlocked, prompting them to urge residents to lock vehicle doors.

Police have returned most of the stolen property, but said they still have items that have not been claimed. Anyone looking for information on missing items can call the Marengo Police Department at 815-568-7231.

“You just have to have confidence and not eat anything you are not absolutely sure of,” Wenzel said. “And I mean absolutely sure of.”

Experienced foragers can be another helpful resource on what to pick and where it is legal to forage, said Crystal Lake resident Cathy Cagle, the organizer of a meetup.com group dedicated to foraging and herbs.

Cagle, who has been foraging for a decade, spends time during the spring searching for morel mushrooms – like most morel hunters, she won’t say where – and other mushrooms that don’t have any similar-looking poisonous counterparts. She cautioned that eating a raw wild mushroom can be dangerous, sometimes deadly.

“Just because it looks like a mushroom you can find at the grocery store, doesn’t mean it is safe to eat,” Cagle said.

Venture to Cagle’s home any night of the week and there’s likely some foraged food such as a morel, wild violet or garlic mustard in her salad bowl. Or, there could be a cup of dandelion tea.

What to serve, she said, isn’t entirely her decision.

“Most things you put in your salad bowl you need to replace every year,” Cagle said. “These are things that are coming up of their own accord with the seasons. What the world is giving you, you are eating at that time. We’re not pulling it, we’re not killing it. We’re eating it from where the world put it.”

McHENRY – Alice Howenstine sees dinner in the weeds growing around her home.

Howenstine, an 85-year-old McHenry resident, ambles through the patches of leafy greens, yellow flowers and spongy mushrooms in her yard, picking each from the ground along her way. At the end of her expedition, she’ll wash and cook them so she can savor the unintentional produce that sprouted among the grass.

“I do it practically every day,” Howenstine said. “That’s not always the plan. When I go out to get the mail or see the animals and I go behind the buildings, I might pick something.”

Meals foraged from backyards are hitting tables across McHenry County as foraging season ramps up. The practice, local foragers say, is something anyone can pick up with a little gumption and a detailed field guide.

A child of the Great Depression, Howenstine started foraging when she was young and carried on the tradition when she and her husband, Bill, started a family. The family still picks stinging nettles to cook and eat or devours elderberry blossoms slathered and cooked in egg batter.

“It was something we both learned from our parents,” Alice Howenstine said. “It was sort of a challenge and fun to do the best with what we had.”

In her home on Pioneer Organic Tree Farm, which she and her husband run, Howenstine pages through about a dozen guidebooks filled with drawings, descriptions and uses for the plants she might encounter on her afternoon romp.

Checking and cross-referencing books like those are key to a successful – and not deadly – foraging trip, she said.

Woodstock resident Caron Wenzel offers the same advice to the students who take her foraging class at McHenry County College. Wenzel, 61, said she started eating wild plants about 35 years ago after reading books upon books on

Area schools get creative with fundraising EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – The week following the Apex Fun Run has been a bit of a letdown, one South Elementary School teacher said.

The Crystal Lake school brought the company in for the first time this year to coordinate a fun run that would raise money primarily for books for the school’s library and perhaps heart rate monitors for the physical education classes and supplies for a new tiered behavior intervention system, Assistant Principal Kristen Cannon said.

About $40,000 has been pledged to the 428-student school, 10 percent of which will go to the teacher whose classroom raised the money, but 48 percent of those dollars will go to Apex, a for-profit company.

Commercial companies aren’t completely new to the school fundraising landscape.

Some schools ask students to sell wrapping paper or frozen food from companies such as Innisbrook, which keeps at least 50 percent of the purchase price, and Schwan’s Home Service, which keeps at least 80 percent of product sales and 60 percent of online gift cards sales.

Others host Scholastic Book Fairs, which can earn schools 40 percent or 50 percent of their sales, depending on how much they sell, in Scholastic Dollars, an internal currency that can be used at Scholastic book fairs or in company catalogs, according to the company site. If a school’s fair sells more than $2,000 worth of merchandise, the school also can choose to take 25 percent of the sales in cash.

The parent-teacher organization at Westwood Elementary School in Woodstock had tried hiring a company to run its annual fun fair after the parent who had ran it for years left, said the group’s co-president, Mandy Chonos.

They eventually went back to organizing it themselves after seeing their profits drop from $6,000 to $10,000 a year to $3,000 to $5,000 a year after the company took its cut.

three years ago because families just seemed too busy to handle doing them and parents and the community seemed much happier to donate when everything was going to the school, co-president Kirsten Green said.

Last year, the Westwood PTO raised enough money at its fun fair to buy a new sign for the front of the school after the old one was damaged in a storm, Woodstock School District 200 spokeswoman Carol Smith said.

Algonquin-based Community Unit School District 300’s foundation also handles its big annual fundraiser in-house, said Foundation Trustee Diane Magerko, who also heads the foundation’s Performing and Fine Arts Committee.

The foundation operates separately from the school’s parent-teacher organizations and uses its funds to award grants designed to encourage innovation at the classroom level and fund larger programs that aren’t typically part of the district’s budget, she said.

“You have to balance the convenience of having some-

one run your event with the profits you expect,” Chonos said.

And while some of the funds raised by South Elementary

School may go to Apex, the school is earning more than it ever had on its own, Cannon said.

Going with the company also means that a dedicated team comes to the school to pump up the students with prizes and a pep rally and then two weeks worth of class visits, each about eight to 10 minutes, focused on different leadership qualities, said Patrick Houck, the physical education teacher who coordinated the event.

This method was able to tie in so many different things the school is trying to accomplish, in particular emphasizing good character qualities in line with its Character Counts initiative, raising additional funds for the school and creating student engagement, especially as the year winds down, Cannon said.

“I think we need to be more creative and open to how we can support our schools with the funding decreasing statewide,” she said. “We have to be creative in how we can support our students, open to different ideas.”

Experts say fewer teachers entering profession

Hold it high, future educators. You are part of a shrinking pool of teachers coming out of Illinois colleges and universities, according to statewide data.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education reports that enrollment in education programs at Illinois’ colleges and universities fell significantly on the heels of the recession.

From 2009 to 2012, the most recent data available, enrollment in education programs fell 37 percent.

But there’s some news that could be troubling for those with their hands up. Even with the drops in enrollment, Illinois is far from a teacher shortage, experts say. There are far more applicants than there are job openings.

“For dual language, you have to provide content in Spanish and in English.

In high school, dual language is 100 percent Spanish.”

Brian McAdow Woodstock North High School principal Some school districts reported difficulty filling certain specialty positions. Take District 200’s Chinese language program. Woodstock North High School Principal Brian McAdow said if there’s a job opening, there might be only a handful of qualified applicants.

But consider other traditional programs, such as English or social studies, and the teacher pool gets much larger.

“We might have 250 applicants,” McAdow said.

“I think there’s certain areas, through certifications and actual content, where it’s more difficult to find teachers, and your pool of applicants is going to be smaller,” McAdow said.

ence, mathematics and Advanced Placement classes that require additional certifications are harder to fill, he said.

Woodstock’s ever-popular dual language programs can sometimes draw ire, McAdow said, because the district has recruited teachers from Spain.

But as the principal explained, these specialty teachers need to not only be fluent in Spanish, they have to be certified to teach their subject in the language.

“For dual language, you have to provide content in Spanish and in English,” McAdow said.

“In high school, dual language is 100 percent Spanish.

“We’re always looking for qualified dual language teach-

ers,” he continued. “When we can’t find them here, that’s when we start looking at other areas.”

According to a report by the Alliance for Excellent Education, the problem is not finding highly qualified teachers to fill jobs, it’s retaining them.

Turnover is especially high for first-year teachers. The Alliance found that 40 to 50 percent of teachers leave the profession after five years, according to their research.

There’s a variety of reasons for the attrition, experts say.

Some say it’s the political landscape. Teaching was once a highly regarded profession, but with Illinois in dire straits with its pension obligations,

some of the blame for which has fallen on teachers and their powerful unions.

Other experts called out education’s obsession with standardized testing for turning some away from the profession.

The Alliance cited a number of reasons, including inadequate administrative support, isolated working conditions, poor student discipline, low salaries and a lack of collective teacher influence over schoolwide decisions.

But there are still those who look at teaching as more of a calling than a career.

Those like Barb Truels, who is mentoring future teachers at Northern Illinois University’s education program.

“It’s a challenging position, its a challenging career, but it’s really rewarding,” said Truels, a clinical supervisor at Northern Illinois University’s special education program.

“I’ve been doing it 40 years.”

Area farmers honor one of their own with tractor procession

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com McHENRY – Tom King would have said “Zowie boys, that’s a lot of tractors” if he could have seen his funeral procession May 12.

That was the consensus among a group of friends and family who drove more than 50 tractors during a funeral procession in McHenry for King. The 66-year-old farmer was fatally struck May 7 by a motorcycle outside his home in the 3900 block of Ringwood Road in McHenry.

Glen Stade, a neighbor who knew King for more than 45 years, said the convoy was a fitting way to say

goodbye to a dear friend who always led parades in a King Farms tractor.

“We’ve been on so many rides with Tom around the county,” Stade said, choking back tears. “This is the last one.”

Officials said Michael Polanzi, 62, of McHenry, was driving a 2007 Harley-Davidson west on Ringwood Road with a passenger, Krystal L. Hyde, 28, of McHenry, when they struck King. To date, police have not announced any citations stemming from the crash.

Many of the tractors that drove from the Colonial Funeral Home to St. Mary’s Church in McHenry on May 12 carried a sign reading “In tribute to a fallen farmer.

Tom King. Farmers feed the world.” A few of them also featured King’s signature phrase, “zowie boys,” which he would often exclaim, friends said.

“You had English, Spanish and Tommy’s language,” Stade said.

Behind the hearse and some cars, Mike Justen led the procession of roaring farm implements on King’s red tractor decorated with pig and cow cutouts. Justen, 56, grew up farming side by side with King. Some years, Justen said, he could not have farmed without King.

“I was farming years ago, and I got crushed by a bull,” Justen said. “Tom came and filled my silos with some of the other neighbors.”

Farmers traveled from as far away as Walworth, Wis., and Libertyville.

McHenry friends such as Walter Weidner, 92, and Gene Blake, 74, traded stories about daily lunches with King while tractors hummed and sputtered in the background.

Arnie Diedrich, 67, remembered King’s generosity. King would donate a pig to the Boy Scouts to raffle off annually, Diedrich said.

Late-night work on the farm was common, Diedrich said, as was helping fellow farmers in a bind.

“If you called him up he would drop everything,” Diedrich said. “He was a great guy. I’ll miss him just being himself.”

water mains this year along Giordano Court and near the Bakley Shopping Center, Johnson said. The village will now look to fund that infrastructure project in 2016.

Officials also are putting $100,000 from their local road improvement fund toward the ongoing downtown overhaul. The $100,000 was originally budgeted for this year’s summer road repairs, but the construction bid was lower than estimated, Johnson said.

The parking lot improvements that originally were part of the Amtrak project would have also cost Huntley about $220,000 more. But officials worked with the contractor on the project to create savings in the contract, Johnson said.

The revised $2.85 million bid with Alliance Contractors means about 130 parking spaces will be added south of Main Street.

The original bid village trustees approved last month included sidewalk, road, landscape and lighting upgrades along portions of Main, Coral, First, Second, Woodstock and Church streets.

The bid with Alliance Contractors is a part of the village’s broader $4 million downtown overhaul that began earlier this year. It upgrades infrastructure, adds parking lots and buries overhead utility lines, as Huntley officials try to refurbish the historic downtown.

Officials last year contemplated a piecemeal approach to the downtown work but decided to make the improvements all together, following Quinn’s announcement on the Amtrak line.

Times now have appeared to change.

“As we put the entire downtown project together, the passenger rail line was an important part of the project,” Johnson said.

“We are still hopeful that it occurs. But again, the reinvestment into the heart of the community is a positive for Huntley.”
