Huntley, others get grants for bike projects

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The state will grant Huntley $1.1 million to build a multiuse path that would allow runners and bicyclists to safely navigate Route 47.

Transportation projects in Algonquin, Lakemoor and McHenry are also included in the $52.7 million investment Gov. Pat Quinn announced on Saturday.

The projects all fall under the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, a feder-

ally-funded matching program designed to promote bike, pedestrian and other alternative transportation options.

“These projects will support hundreds of jobs while preserving our heritage, beautifying communities and creating opportunities for pedestrians, bicyclists and others across Illinois,” Quinn said in a news release.

The Illinois Department of Transportation received 232 applications, seeking a total of $260.5 million, for the competitive program’s latest round

of funding. The $52.7 million awarded will support 71 local projects and more than 400 jobs, the release states.

Huntley officials last summer revealed a $1.4 million plan to build the roughly milelong Route 47 path. The state grant would narrow the village’s contribution to $289,930, officials said at the time.

McHenry also received $358,840 for a bike path leading to Knox Park and the Route 31 business district, along with an additional $354,000 for a bike path on the north side of Miller Road between Route 31 and Green Street.

Thirst for craft beer grows

By CYNTHIA WOLF editorial@nwherald.com Those left wanting more flavor and freshness when sipping a brew have new reason to smack their lips as McHenry County’s craft brew scene continues to ferment.

The Crystal Lake Beer Co. is coming to 150 N. Main St. this summer, joining McHenry’s Chain O’ Lakes Brewing Co. in locally producing craft beers for sale in their taprooms and distribution to a variety of area outlets.

“We’re excited,” said Chuck Ross, co-owner of

Crystal Lake Beer Co. along with John O’Fallon, both of Crystal Lake.

“We hope to open by mid-summer to be able to participate in Crystal Lake’s centennial celebration,” he continued. “The city has been very supportive and excited, and as we move forward, we haven’t lost any enthusiasm in the marketplace.”

And Crystal Lake Beer Co. assuredly won’t be the last to frost local mugs, as Scorched Earth Brewing Co. is under construction in Algonquin and a Woodstock entrepreneur also is said to

be putting together a plan for a location near the Square.

Ross and others who are brewing, distributing and pouring craft beers are part of a still-trending market.

In 2012, growth of the craft brewing industry was 15 percent by volume and 17 percent by dollars compared to growth in 2011 of 13 percent by volume and 15 percent by dollars, according to the Brewers Association, a nonprofit industry trade group for small and independent American brewers.

WOODSTOCK – Unfinished subdivisions like the one on the north side of Woodstock are scattered across McHenry County.

Some are mostly filled while others still look half done with unfinished roads and missing amenities, the result of developers going bankrupt after the housing bubble burst.

But for the first time in years, new homes are going up in some of these subdivisions, including The Sonatas in Woodstock.

The development – along with 10 other communities in the Chicago metropolitan area – was bought by Ryland Homes from an investment firm that had bought the lots when the previous developer went out of business, said John Carroll, the president of Ryland Home’s Chicago division.

Restarting these communities can be a time-consuming process that requires working closely with the municipalities, but it can also be less expensive than starting new, Carroll said.

These restarted communities are one of the reasons some municipalities are issuing more building permits for new residential construction.

The recovery has also been tied to a reduction in the number of used homes on the

“Coach Price said, ‘I don’t like losing,’ ” Egekeze said. “I wanted to go back in and be aggressive.

It’s just an all-star game, but I wanted to win, too.”

Egekeze hit a big 3-pointer, grabbed five more rebounds and sealed the outcome with two free throws with 8 seconds remaining as the Home team defeated Away, 95-90, in the McHenry County Area All-Star Basketball Extravaganza boys game Sunday at Alden-Hebron’s Tigard Gymnasium.

Egekeze scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and hit four 3s to lead the Home.

Egekeze, a 6-foot-8 forward headed to NCAA Division I Belmont, won the dunk contest before the game when he leaped over Marian’s 5-7 guard Derreck Caldez. Egekeze also took home the game’s MVP award.

“I knew it was going to be fun, but I didn’t know it would be this much fun,” Egekeze said. “I met a lot of nice guys here.”

The Home led by 16 after some blazing-hot shooting early in the game and held a 47-37 halftime lead. But the Away team rallied in the second half behind its 3-point shooting. Hampshire’s Ryan Cork hit five 3s, four in the second half, and finished with a team-high 15 points.

Cork helped the Away to a 74-66 lead midway through the second half. Woodstock North’s Junior Ortiz hit two 3s for the Home as it rallied back, and Egekeze hit a 3 to start the Home’s 15-5 run that closed the game.

“I didn’t know [Egekeze] could shoot that well,” Price said. “He’ll do a good job at the next level with what he can do.”

Price used three guards – Caldez, Grayslake Central’s Malcolm Reed, Dundee-Crown’s Cordero Parson – in the final minutes so they could spread the floor and drive to the basket. Caldez’s layup gave the Home a 90-89 lead, and Reed’s layup, off a behind-the-back pass from Caldez, made it 93-89.

Huntley to replace some trees

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Roughly 20 residents have already submitted orders during the first week of Huntley’s annual tree program that replaces hundreds of ash trees infested by the emerald ash borer beetle.

Village officials mailed a set of forms earlier this week to nearly 200 residents who had ash trees removed near parkways by their homes last fall.

Another 200 people will receive letters later this fall to replace ash trees removed in the spring.

The quick response is typical for residents who have recently experienced the height of the beetle’s infestation in Huntley, village Management Assistant Barb Read said.

“We are really hoping that people participate in the program so that we can build up our tree canopy again,” Read said.

Since 2009, the village removed almost 800 ash trees along parkways. More than half of those removals happened in 2012, when the beetle’s infestation peaked in Huntley.

Officials created the 50/50 tree replacement program to encourage residents to replace ash trees along blocks left barren by the beetle. Residents’ strong response to the program last year forced officials to add money to it.

The program allows residents to choose from a list of replacement trees and split the cost to buy and plant a new tree with the village. Huntley officials then order and replace the trees.

Village Board members have set aside $100,000 in the budget this year for the program. They expect village staffers to replace 400 total ash trees by the fall.

The replacement rate will likely continue into 2016, when the beetle’s infestation in Huntley is expected to subside.

The emerald ash borer was first discovered in Illinois in 2006. The green, metallic-looking beetles feed on the inner bark, cutting off nutrients and water to ash trees, which are native to Illinois.

Cafe to donate profits to food pantry

Mike and Terri Ward of Union plan to donate 100 percent of the profits of the franchise restaurant located at 12162 S. Route 47 to feed the hungry through the Grafton Food Pantry.

When the Wards opened Tropical Smoothie Cafe, which serves healthy sandwiches, wraps and a variety of smoothies, in August 2011, they had a mission to give back, said TerKyle Grillot – kgrillot@shawmedia.com ri Ward, 56.

In addition, the business always has had a charitable aspect to it, Mike Ward said, citing donations to local groups, fundraising events and gift certificates for raffles.

But the Wards knew they wanted to do more.

Mike Ward, 55, cites the couple’s Christian faith and the book “The Hole in Our Gospel” by Richard Stearns as influences for their next step.

“What if we took this restaurant and found a way to use it to serve others,” Mike Ward said.

In February, the inventory of homes for sale in McHenry County dropped 17.9 percent to 1,840, down from 2,241 in February 2013.

That translates to about a three- to four-month supply, meaning those homes would sell out in about four months – a sign of an extremely healthy market, said Robert Meyn, the Midwest director of sales and marketing for Orleans Homes.

With the pickings slimmer, more people are opting for new construction, Carroll said.

The city of Woodstock issued a total of 59 permits in 2013, 48 single-family homes and 11 townhouses or other attached single-family homes.

That was up from 37 in 2012 and 27 in 2011.

Huntley, another town Ryland Homes is developing in, also saw a bump last year. It issued 176 permits for detached and attached single-family homes, the result of a somewhat steady climb from 76 permits in 2009.

Not every municipality is seeing the return of new residential construction, though.

The village of Algonquin issued 77 permits in 2009 but only two permits last year.

Eleven 20-unit apartment buildings were OK’d in 2012 but no single-family houses.

The city of McHenry has seen the number of permits it issues hover around six to eight for the last four years, though 12 permits were issued for multi-family homes in 2013 after three years of no permits.

McHenry County is also seeing a slight rebound, returning to 2009-2010 numbers.

The county issued 27 permits in 2013, up from 12 in 2012.

The issue is that even though the market for new homes is starting to return, it’s not enough to hit every community, Carroll said.

Meyn expects the market to continue to improve and eventually spread to more towns.

“It’s more flavorful and of higher quality,” Dycha said.

“Compared to domestic beers, our sales are 80 percent craft, 20 percent domestic. The domestics did increase last year … I know a lot of micro breweries are starting to make more sessionable, lower-alcohol, easier-drinking beers – beers that are not too bold, but have a nice, crisp flavor with milder hops, milder malts.

“I have to say that craft beer sales are still trending up.”

Owners Adam and Melissa Harjung of Cary set out to give the location a 1920s speakeasy vibe, with a copper-hued tin ceiling, brick-faced walls, teal-upholstered booths and a handsome, handcrafted cherry and maple bar.

“I’d have to say 70 percent of our business is craft beer,” Adam Harjung said, adding that a lengthy fine wine list and specialty cocktails also are available.

Harjung and his general manager, Tanya Callaway, said they look forward to adding local brewing companies’ offerings to their list.

Village part of plan to restart Amtrak service between Chicago, Rockford

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The village will soon have its first train station, after Gov. Pat Quinn announced April 10 a $223 million plan to restart Amtrak service between Chicago and Rockford.

Huntley, along with Elgin and Belvidere, are included as stops along the new route that would open Rockford to passenger rail service for the first time since 1981. Village officials shared the news after initially reviewing Weber Grills’ expansion plan that could create nearly 500 jobs within Huntley.

They now will meet with state officials about the new Amtrak route and begin identifying a location for the train stop.

“It’s a positive because it offers another mode of transportation that currently is not here,” Village Manager Dave Johnson said. “If somebody wants to go to the city and sightsee for the weekend, now there is an option to do that.”

Curt Ames of the Chain O’ Lakes Brewing in McHenry said his taproom business has burgeoned since opening last summer at Pearl and Green streets, though he is not yet distributing.

“We did 80 barrels the last quarter of last year,” he said.

“It’s fun to still see a bunch of new people coming in the door.”

And Ames is not at all concerned about the prospect of the local micro-brewing scene becoming oversaturated.

“It’s honestly better to have a few in a geographic region,” he said, “because then you become a destination for outsiders.”

Partnering with the Grafton Food Pantry gives the Wards a way to find those who could use help.

Because turning a restaurant into a nonprofit entity is not easy, the Wards instead created a nonprofit foundation called Dignified Dining.

The foundation allows the Wards to convert 100 percent of Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s profits into vouchers to be donated to the food pantry.

Mike Ward, who sold his software company in 2006, does not receive a salary from the cafe, and Terri earns a small amount for the catering work she does.

The aim for this year is to provide 6,000 meals, which amounts to a donation of close to $30,000, Mike Ward said.

For every meal purchased at the cafe, it’s possible to donate two to three vouchers to the food pantry, he said.

On March 1, the Wards presented the Grafton Food Pantry with their first 200 vouchers.

Designed to look like money, the vouchers are for adult meals including a food item, side and a drink or smoothie; kids’ meals; and smoothies.

A father of three children recently used the vouchers to take his family to the cafe for dinner.

“Now they can take their families out to eat,” Mike Ward said of helping families “dine with dignity.”

Tropical Smoothie Cafe also does a lot of smoothie sales at schools through an off-site fundraising program, Terri Ward said. Smoothie vouchers will allow needy children to visit the cafe for a treat with their parents.

“It lets them be like their peers,” Terri Ward said.

The charitable effort has not gone unnoticed.

“The community has been extremely supportive,” Mike Ward said.

A tip jar near the register often is overflowing, and even the student workers have donated their tips to the cause.

The response at the Grafton Food Pantry has been equally positive.

The pantry serves 175 to 200 families each month, Ford said. In February, just over 600 individuals sought help.

The Wards expect their donations to ramp up as the weather warms. That will be a bonus for the pantry, which often sees donations drop off in the summer.

“That’s our busiest time,” Terri Ward said.

To maximize the donation, the Wards hope to enlist community volunteers to reduce labor costs. The volunteers won’t be taking jobs away from students, since they will not be used to prepare food or run the register.

For instance, one woman comes in Fridays at the end of the lunch shift and spends two hours doing dishes. Another volunteer makes deliveries.

“We don’t want to burn them out,” Mike Ward said of the one- to two-hour shifts two to three times a week.

The Wards hope to expand the Dignified Dining concept to other local restaurants and area food pantries.

“If we asked every restaurant to give 1 percent back and converted that to food vouchers, add that up,” Mike Ward said. “Think how many coupons that would be.”

For now, the Wards are getting the process worked out with Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

But so far it’s been a winwin for both the Wards and the food pantry.

“It’s nice that it’s a local restaurant taking care of local people in need,” Ford said.

In 2010, area congressmen, state representatives and village officials all lobbied the Illinois Department of Transportation to make Huntley a part of a new Amtrak line connecting Chicago to Dubuque, Iowa.

State officials ultimately agreed to connect that proposed route further south and began negotiating with the Canadian National Railway to use its tracks for the new rail line.

Those plans changed Thursday after years of failed negotiations between state officials and Canadian National. A new northern route that passes through Huntley will instead use tracks owned by Metra and Union Pacific Railroad, Quinn announced in a news release.

Service should begin in 2015 with one daily round-trip from a temporary station in Rockford to Chicago’s Union Station. Officials would then expand service the following year and eventually connect the new route west to Dubuque.

During their meeting, Huntley officials said they were

never told about the change in plans for the Amtrak route until seeing a news release on it earlier in the evening.

Huntley has long coveted a train route that cuts through the village, dating to the 1990s when they began planning for a Metra stop.

“We are excited about this,” Village President Chuck Sass said. “We potentially have Weber, we have this and the (new) hospital. A lot of good things are happening here.”

In other business, Village Board members met with representatives from Weber-Stephen Products for the first time about the company’s plan to expand its operation and create nearly 500 jobs within Huntley.

The maker of Weber Grills would make its current facility behind the Jewel-Osco in Huntley a manufacturing factory and build a global distribution center next to the Huntley Outlet Center along Interstate 90.

Weber could inch closer to construction next month, when board members likely will vote on annexing 131 acres east of the outlet mall that would house the new distribution center, Johnson said.
