sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – District 158 has begun the statewide search for its next academic chief, but Superintendent John Burkey said he has mixed feelings about filling the position.

Chief Academic Officer Mike Moan earlier this week, was named the new superintendent of Woodstock District 200 after spending 17 years at the

Huntley school district. He will leave District 158 on June 30.

Burkey has seen Moan go from a high school dean to the district’s top academic administrator in the eight years Burkey has led the district.

He credited Moan for lifting student achievement and improving the district’s curriculum review process since starting as chief academic officer in the 2010-11 school year.

“I’m very happy he got the

job in Woodstock,” Burkey said. “I’m not happy we are losing him, but he’s ready to be superintendent.”

A graduate of Woodstock High School, Moan will replace retiring District 200 Superintendent Ellyn Wrzeski on July 1. He was selected over two other finalists, determined from a pool of more than 60 applicants.

Village of Huntley looks to assist Cargo Equipment with move STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The village could help lower borrowing costs needed to move an Elgin-based manufacturer within Huntley by merely passing on its tax-exempt status.

Cargo Equipment Corp. plans on borrowing $3.3 million in bonds at the end of March to finance the construction of its new 40,000 square-foot facility in the Huntley Corporate Park along Interstate 90.

By using the village’s tax-exempt status, the manufacturer could lower its interest rates by 35 percent. The business incentive doesn’t cost Huntley in any way and helps Cargo with its relocation, Assistant Village Manager Lisa Armour said.

“It helps that company be more competitive and manage costs of doing business,” Armour said.

Cargo approached Huntley officials about the incentive when announcing relocation plans to the business park along I-90 earlier this fall. The company wants to start building its new Huntley facility this spring.

The Village Board should approve the incentive today, after members unanimously voiced support for it during a recent committee meeting.

Residents also can weigh in on the issue during a public hearing before the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Huntley Municipal Complex, 10987 Main St. Huntley could offer Cargo additional help with the cost of setting up shop in the village, but officials have yet

to determine specific incentives, Armour said.

When announcing the move in October, Cargo highlighted the need to expand and the newly opened interchange at I-90 and Route 47 as reasons for relocating to Huntley.

The company plans to immediately bring 22 jobs once it completes construction later this fall and then could add up to 25 jobs throughout the next two years. Village officials have said the relocation signifies the economic importance a full interchange brings to Huntley.

Officials also are “actively engaged” with several other firms interested in locating near I-90, Armour said. They expect to announce the location of at least one or two firms in the coming months, she said.

D-154 hikes technology fee for student laptops

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Incoming freshmen at Marengo High School will have to chip in an extra $5 next school year for a laptop as part of the school’s expanding digital learning program.

School District 154 Board members earlier this week raised the annual technology fee from $75 to $80 for all freshmen entering the 2014-15 school year. Administrators proposed the increase after switching to Lenovo as the

school’s netbook manufacturer, said Superintendent Dan Bertrand.

Even with the increase, the high school’s total student fees will remain one of the cheapest in McHenry County, Bertrand said. The high school-only district doesn’t charge course fees for after-school clubs and sports.

“We don’t have any major fees beyond the technology fee,” Bertrand said.

Officials decided to switch to Lenovo for its classroom netbooks at a higher cost since the manufacturer makes a

more durable and reliable product, he said. The district had been using Dell laptops.

The move also allows the district to continue doing inhouse repairs that often save students on maintenance costs, Bertrand said.

Under the digital program, students can either pay the annual technology fee for four years or pay a lump sum upfront. After graduation, students can keep their netbooks.

Nearly 600 Marengo High School students will be using netbooks in the classroom this fall, Bertrand said.

8NEWS BRIEFS Two Marengo businesses sell tobacco to a minor MARENGO – Two Marengo businesses were cited Feb. 25 for selling cigarettes to a minor during a Marengo Police Department compliance check.

Marengo Convenient Mart, 20001 Telegraph St., and Creekside Marathon, 566 N. State St., were both cited under a local ordinance for unlawful sale of a tobacco product to a minor, which carries a fine of up to $250, according to a news release from the Marengo Police Department.

They were the only two of 13 tobacco retailers to fail the compliance check.

The checks are conducted through a grant from the Illinois Liquor Commission’s Kid’s Can’t Buy ‘Em Here program.

Marengo Lions Club hosts breakfast fundraiser MARENGO – The Marengo Lions Club and Marengo LEO Club will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon March 16 at the Marengo United Methodist Church, 119 E. Giving up keys is a difficult choice for some JOSEPH BUSTOS jbustos@shawmedia.com Every three years, Esther Vadnais, 79, of Woodstock takes a safe driving course through AARP to review the rules of the road.

The instructors help seniors review and learn how to compensate for changes to vision, hearing and reaction time, how to handle blind spots, how to use anti-lock brakes and how to assess their own driving abilities, among other things.

For going through the course, Vadnais and her husband, Robert, received a discount on their insurance, Esther Vadnais said.

She is one of the 1.3 million drivers in Illinois age 65 and older, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Making the decision to give up that license is difficult as it means giving up independence.

In Illinois, people age 75 to 80 must take road and written tests every four years. People 81 to 86 years old must take them every two years. People 87 and older have to retest each year.

Written tests in all instances are waived if the person has a good record with no infractions.

Even though Vadnais passed her most recent driving test, she has discussed with her four grown children about if and when she and her husband would give up the privilege.

“We have discussed our aging, and when we need help that they would be available,” Esther Vadnais said. “My husband and I both feel when we should stop driving, we will.”

“If my eyesight got bad, I think I would probably feel that I wasn’t capable of driving,” Vadnais added.

She said the same message she gives to her students about driving applies to everyone.

“It’s a privilege, not a right,” Pfeiffer said.

Pfeiffer’s mother lost her license when she was 75 because of mistakes she made while trying to get her license renewed.

Family members now have to take Pfeiffer’s mother to the

grocery store and doctor’s appointments, Pfeiffer said.

She said the ability to react in situations diminishes as people get older.

Pfeiffer said seniors need to be cognizant of their vision and hearing ability as they get older because drivers need to be able to hear sirens and see other vehicles.

“Everything we teach kids, it lessens as you get older,” Pfeiffer said. “We start losing our sight, we start losing hearing. Reaction time is so important.”

As for approaching parents with the difficult decision, every situation is different and based on the individual, Pfeiffer said.

If there is a history of accidents or close-call situations, children should be straightforward with their parents and say “this is something we need to consider maybe not doing anymore,” Pfeiffer said.

Three to four years ago Cary-resident Malinda Bacchi noticed her husband, Michael, 73, didn’t see a turn and didn’t see a car coming while driving back from Wisconsin.

“He decided that it wasn’t worth killing someone to keep driving,” Malinda Bacchi said.

With Michael Bacchi not driving, it has an affect on the Bacchi family, Malinda Bacchi said.

“If he wants to go anyplace, he has to have someone who’s willing to take him, or that’s available to take him,” Malinda Bacchi said.

For Malinda Bacchi, who is 71, she is keeping some things in mind to look for about herself.

“If I would get to the point where I couldn’t judge distance, judge how close I was to a car next to me, even pulling into the garage, how I’m parking the car in the garage, I think maybe I should go for

a class or get my eyes checked again,” Malinda Bacchi said.

AARP Driving Safety Class AARP has scheduled a twoday refresher course for drivers age 50 and older. The eighthour course will review the rules of the road and accident prevention skills.

The course will help drivers overcome the effects of aging in driving.

Most insurance companies offer discounts on insurance when the course is completed, the news release said.

Pre-registration and attendance on both days are required.

The class is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 19 and 21 at the Algonquin Township Office at 3702 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

Vote early, ballots can be cast through March 15

The two-week early voting period before the March 18 primary began Monday at 10 locations throughout McHenry County. You can cast your ballot at any of them, not just the one closest to you, through March 15.

McHenry County voters this year will elect all statewide constitutional offices, a U.S Senate seat, all seats in the U.S. and state Houses of Representatives, one Illinois Senate seat, four countywide offices and half the County Board. Winners of the primary will run in the Nov. 4 midterm election.

On March 18, voters also will decide the fate of a number of referendums and elect their local precinct committeemen.

Bond referendums will go before voters in Johnsburg District 12, the Huntley Park District, Bull Valley and Fox Lake. Voters in Algonquin will be asked whether the village can pursue electrical aggregation, and rural Nunda Township voters will be asked if the township can contract for waste disposal.

Candidates sound off on taxes, land issues

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com Two Republican incumbents and a challenger, all three of who want to defend its agriculture and open space, are running for two open seats for McHenry County Board District 6.

Board members Ersel Schuster and Michele Aavang, and challenger Larry Smith, are seeking the GOP nod for the district, which covers all or parts of 11 townships making up the county’s rural western half, including Harvard, Marengo, Hebron and Union.

No Democratic candidates have filed, meaning the March 18 primary will be the de facto election unless the party caucuses in a candidate by the June 2 deadline.

All three candidates cited control of county budgeting and

lower taxation as their top priority. Schuster, who owns a rural Woodstock printing business, is one of the County Board’s regular votes against ordinances that she feels grow government’s size, scope and budget.

“I would like to continue this work so we can assure taxpayers that our county board will not slip back into [the] mode of automatically raising the levy to once again grow county government,” Schuster said.

Aavang and Smith also agree that the county should continue freezing its levy. County government for the past two years has voluntarily rejected the inflationary levy increase it is entitled to under the tax cap, citing its stable finances and struggling taxpayers.

All three candidates differed on the referendum asking whether the County Board chairman should be popularly elected to four-year terms,

rather than chosen from among the 24-member board every two years.

Schuster opposes the idea, alleging it will create entrenched incumbency, increase disputes between the board and chairman, and expand government because it would create a 25th board member. Smith opposes it as well but criticized Schuster for voting against putting it on the ballot. Aavang, like Smith, supports asking the voters, but is neutral on the issue, saying that both ways to elect a chairman have advantages and disadvantages.

Schuster faces two contested races March 18. She also is running in a three-way race for Seneca 1 precinct committeeman against incumbent Mark Gummerson and candidate Robert Schlenkert.
