HUNTLEY – Residents on Thursday can see firsthand the plans behind the $4 million in upgrades to downtown Huntley, with early downtown construction to underground utilities already underway.

Huntley staff and officials also will be available to answer any questions residents may have about the project during the village’s open house on the downtown improvements Thursday evening, said Village Manager Dave Johnson.

The public open house at the Huntley Municipal Complex will feature numerous display boards and slideshows

on each portion of the downtown makeover. The event happens weeks before village officials start the construction bidding for the more visible, aesthetic renovations to the historic downtown.

The exterior changes to downtown Huntley represent a major portion of the $4 million project.

Streets and sidewalks near the village’s square will be widened and repaved. The village also has planned additional landscaping for the area, benches, raised planters, bike racks and trash cans.

HUNTLEY – The Huntley Area Veterans Foundation recently received $10,000 total in donations for its ongoing effort to build a veterans memorial in downtown Huntley.

The Huntley American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary donated the $10,000 to the volunteers who run the veterans foundation, according to a foundation news release.

Since forming last year, the Huntley veterans foundation has worked to raise money and meet various community groups to build a black granite memorial that would honor area veterans and the branches of the U.S. military.

Village officials also provided the group a location for the memorial, donating land near the gazebo in downtown Huntley. The foundation needs to raise about $150,000 to complete the project.

Construction crews in the coming weeks also will start the $880,590 work to bury underground utilities that officials have said is necessary to make the landscaping and street improvements.

Downtown property owners and any Huntley resident can view all the proposed changes to the downtown during the open house, Johnson said. Village officials also will review the different project timelines and schedules with residents and help answer questions, he said.

WOODSTOCK – It’s time for the Cooper brothers to finish what they started.

Almost two and a half years after first setting out for Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, on their Enduro motorcycles, the Woodstock brothers are ready to get back to Colombia to finish a trip that was cut short there because of a broken leg suffered by Nathan Cooper. “[We’ve] saved up the money, and Nathan is ready to go so the time is right,” said Aaron Cooper, Nathan’s older brother. “This is the adventure of a lifetime.”

The brothers also stopped in Panama at Alouatta Lodge, a sanctuary and rehabilitation center for monkeys.

With more than 3,500 miles still to go, Aaron Cooper said they plan on doing more to help the people at the places they stop.

One mission Aaron Cooper knows will be on the agenda is helping the People of Peru Project – an organization dedicated to helping the 600,000 people of Iquitos, a city surrounded by thousands of square-miles of jungle with almost no infrastructure.

“We didn’t get to stop and help as much as we wanted

to last time because we had a set return date,” Aaron Cooper said. “We don’t have a return date this time, which is refreshing. We don’t want to be tourists. We want to participate in some of the everyday life.”

Aaron Cooper said the trip could last as long as five months and he is in no rush to end what could be his last large adventure. Aaron Cooper, a 10-year veteran of the Army, said his work with special operations allowed him to see the world, but with a focus on the darker side of humanity.

He said the South American trip with his brother has restored his faith in the kindness of people; whether it was the stranger in Colorado offering gas money, the man in Mexico who brought them

empanadas or the Colombian family that still watches over their motorcycles.

“People help us more than we help them,” Aaron Cooper said of those they have encountered on the trip. “The world really is a wonderful place.”

If this ends up being the last long adventure the brothers take together, it certainly won’t be the last time either travels. Nathan Cooper, who worked in Korea and then Vietnam as an English teacher, plans to help build English curriculum in Morocco after the trip.

Aaron Cooper also will feed his appetite for adventure by working in international banking that will frequently take him to Europe.

“I’ve always led a life of adventure” Aaron Cooper said. “ I don’t think I will ever stop.”

Not that Marengo’s players consider their junior guard a ball hog. When you drain 3-point attempts at a 42.6 percent clip, your teammates want you to keep shooting.

Knobloch, whether it’s practice or games, never grows weary of hoisting shots.

“I could shoot all day,” said Knobloch, who regularly hits Marengo’s Homer “Bill” Barry Gymnasium before school to shoot.

After the Indians disposed of Harvard, 50-32, in the Class 3A Marengo Regional on March 3, a game in which Knobloch set the Illinois record for 3-pointers in a single season, he hardly could wait for more shots. Before Knobloch left the school, he let athletic director Chad Olson know he would be back at 6 the next morning.

Knobloch’s voracious shooting appetite sparked one of the greatest shooting seasons in state history, as he stretched his record to 167 3s, scored 740 points, averaged 22.4 points a game and pushed the Indians to their first regional championship in 15 years.

Knobloch’s exploits made him the Northwest Herald Boys Basketball Player of the Year, selected by the sports staff with input from area coaches. Jacobs’ Chrishawn Orange and Marian Central’s Adam Pischke received consideration, but Knobloch’s remarkable numbers swung the honor in his favor.

Orange, Pischke, CaryGrove’s Jason Gregoire and Woodstock North’s Josh Jandron join Knobloch on the All-Area first team. The second team is comprised of Jacobs’ Cameron Krutwig and Kenton Mack, Richmond-Burton’s Sam Kaufman, Hampshire’s Matt Bridges and DundeeCrown’s Kiwaun Seals.

Knobloch was one of the area’s best shooters last season, averaging 14.3 points a game and hitting 79 3s, second-best in the area. The 6-footer, who often took 1,200 to 1,500 shots a day in the summer, raised his shooting to another level this season.

“He made a decision not to play football and put a lot of time into basketball,” Indians coach Nate Wright said. “As I watched him go through his workouts and some of what he was doing in AAU games, he was on every single day. He seems to be always hot. He was never off.”

Wright watched Knobloch hit 14 3s in a summer game at Northern Iowa and checked out the IHSA record book, where he found the record of 146 by Princeville’s Aaron Long in 2003. When Knobloch had surpassed his 79 3s from last season by the halfway point this year, Wright knew that record could fall.

“My sophomore year I didn’t have other parts of my game, I was just a shooter,” Knobloch said. “I wanted to be able to get to the hole, do

pull-ups [jumpers], not just focus on my 3s. I felt like I was a stronger player with the ball and everything else.”

Indians senior guard Weston Shepard has been Knobloch’s workout partner since middle school, often showing up before school to shoot together.

“We always focused on getting more shots up and working on the small fundamentals, just to make ourselves better,” Shepard said. “We had the goal in mind to fill the stands and wanted to put numbers on the banner before we left. Zach really dedicated himself to working on his shot. He was an awesome teammate. He never stated he was ‘the’ player on the team or anything. He was very unselfish.”

After games, Knobloch would credit his teammates for setting screens and making passes to get him open. He often obliged by knocking down seven or eight 3s a night. His range seems limitless, and his

release is so quick he often resembles a setter in volleyball.

Knobloch said it comes from watching Golden State’s Steph Curry shoot, and from driveway games against his brother Austin [now 20] and his friends where he was always the youngest and shortest. And then there is the drill he and Shepard concocted together with The Gun rebounding and passing machine at school.

Crystal Lake South principal Scott Shepard used to be Marengo’s principal, so his son Weston and Knobloch often had the gym to themselves.

They set up The Gun, which has a net to rebound and refeed errant shots, to rapidly fire passes back to them.

“We turned it up really fast so you had to catch and shoot before you got hit by another ball,” Knobloch said. “It would continuously throw it out. It definitely helps with quick release.”

Shepard concurs.

“With that machine, you can get off 600 shots in a half hour,” he said. “He would go on streaks of making 20 in a row. I’d look at him like, ‘Oh, my goodness, what are you doing?’”

Marengo’s opponents knew who they had to try to stop, but doing it was another story.

Rockford Lutheran coach Tom Guse saw his worst fears realized in the first half the Class 3A Rochelle Sectional championship game March 13 as Knobloch scored 24 points and hit six 3s.

“He doesn’t even have to be looking at the hoop,” Guse said. “He doesn’t need to be near the hoop at all. He can be this side of halfcourt. I was praying to God that some of them would fall out, and early on it wasn’t happening.”

Lutheran slowed Knobloch better in the second half and won, 69-58, but it was another in a long line of impressive performances.

“Half the time he’s turned sideways, a guy in his face, another guy knocking him down and he still knocks them down,” Wright said. “I’ve never really seen a kid shoot like that, as quick as he shoots, and as off-balanced as he shoots.”

Last Saturday morning, Wright received a text message from Michelle Knobloch, Zach’s mother. The gist of the message was that Knobloch was back at it, taking advantage of the warmer spring weather to shoot in their driveway, asking Michelle to go rebound for him.

“I wasn’t out of bed yet and he was out shooting,” Wright said. “That’s just the way he is.”

Wright’s career plan called for leaving teaching for an administrative position, which also would have brought an end to his coaching career.

Wright has a Type 75 (an advanced administrative certificate) and had interviewed at various schools.

Marengo coach Will Benson has just accepted coaching and teaching positions at Huntley, which meant the Indians’ boys basketball coaching position was open. Wright, an assistant in the program for seven years, could become head coach with a resurgent team coming off a 20-win season.

Just after the spring semester finished, Wright made his decision.

“I told [athletic director] Chad I was going to commit myself to this for the time being,” Wright said. “This was my next step. I felt I was ready to step in and continue the journey of trying to get basketball back on track at Marengo.”

Basketball is definitely back on track. Wright followed Benson’s 20-win season by leading the Indians to a 27-6 mark, tying for the second-most wins in school history, and their first regional championship in 15 years.

Because of Marengo’s success, Wright is the Northwest Herald Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, selected by the sports staff with input from area coaches. Prairie Ridge coach Corky Card, who led his team to the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division title, also received strong support.

Wright jumped right in before he was even officially hired, taking care of summer games while the interviewing process was going on. For a team with its third coach in as many years, it was a smooth transition.

“To have a coach that we knew and not have a whole brand new system put in place for the first time in three

Senior forward Hunter Simonini said the players figured, especially that late in the summer, Wright would get the job.

“He did an amazing job stepping in,” Simonini said.

“He came to practice every single day with a schedule and was always prepared. He kept us on track and there was never a gap when we didn’t know what was going on.”

Marengo got off to a fast start and won its own E.C. Nichols Holiday Tournament

with a victory over Richmond-Burton. Although R-B went on to win the Big Northern Conference East Division title, Marengo beat the Rockets three times.

The Indians rode their 3-point shooting, behind state record-holder Zach Knobloch, the Northwest Herald Player of the Year, to a Class 3A regional title and the Rochelle sectional championship game, which they lost to Rockford Lutheran.

“We were just making sure the kids are prepared for the next opponent and keeping the kids consistent every single day,” said Wright, who teaches math and serves as part-time dean. “It was about putting that consistent effort forth all year. We tried to keep

that going from the freshman to the varsity level.”

Wright, who is 6-foot-8, played high school basketball at downstate Canton then played at NCAA Division III Knox College, where he also played golf for two years, then baseball for two years. He coached under Olson, Dave Pettit and Benson at Marengo before getting his shot.

“He lets his players play and has complete confidence in us,” Simonini said. “If we do something wrong, he calls us out and tells you to look for all your options. He’s very good with constructive criticism.”

Shepard said it helped that Wright had coached the varsity players at lower levels.

“He had been with us, he knew all the players well,”

Shepard said. “That was a huge part of getting us to blend together as a team. He did a really great job of using every player to his fullest potential.”

Eventually, Wright plans to get back to his original career path of administration.

For now, he looks forward to coaching, especially with Knobloch, Craiton Nice and Ben and Mike Volkening coming back next year.

“That other job search is on hold unless it’s the perfect position,” Wright said. “Right now, I’m committed to teaching and coaching at Marengo.

I’ve always enjoyed coaching, and now I’m very glad I stepped into this role, after the year we had. This was a good group of kids to take on in my first year.”

6 McHenry County College rolls out introductory class on drones

CRYSTAL LAKE – Bill Stockwell’s hands barely moved as the drone rose straight up into the air, the four horizontal propellers whirring.

The four men in his class – Stockwell’s introduction to drones course is in its first semester at McHenry County College and Elgin Community College – moved in closer to watch the screen on Stockwell’s remote control.

“We have smaller ones, not like that. Bill’s is a little intense,” said Brian Monte of Crystal Lake, the owner of Barrington-based GadgetBar who is taking the course along with his employee, Taylor Wadlington of Cary.

The two plan on expanding the business – primarily focused on repairing cellphones, cameras, tablets and computers – into this new territory, repairing the unmanned aerial systems and building them from scratch.

The course, which meets over six Wednesdays this spring, gives students a basic understanding of what a drone is and how it operates along with a lowdown on the rules and regulations. They’ll also get a primer on pre- and post-flight inspections, basic maintenance and how a drone is constructed.

While all the students in this course already have a drone at home, the course focuses on using a simulator to get them used to the systems – without all the crashes and repairs, Stockwell said.

“The simulator is definitely a good tool,” he said. “It’s, I’d say, 70 percent realistic. It teaches you how to use your hands and what the machine’s doing, so if you practice
