Mareike Western knew she knew the word, but the lights shining on the stage of McHenry County College’s Luecht Conference Center were bright and she was nervous.

“I was really scared because it was the last word and I knew it and I was going to go to Washington,” she said. “I had to make sure I wasn’t going to mess up. That’s what I was really worried about, not so much

the words I didn’t know but the words I could have screwed up because I was nervous.”

Western even got through the word she completely didn’t know – homburg, a word German in origin that means a man’s felt hat with a dented crown and a slightly rolled brim.

And after 25 rounds, the 14-year-old Johnsburg Junior High School student was the last of 12 spellers standing and the new McHenry County Spelling Bee champion, the first new champion in five years.

Four-time McHenry County spelling bee champion Lucas Urbanski still attended the bee – but this time in a judge’s chair.

As the champ, Western will travel to Washington, D.C., for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May, all expenses paid for her and a family member.

Only 300 spellers out of an initial 11 million participants from all 50 states and eight countries will make it to Washington.

WOODSTOCK – McHenry County is looking to buy land for a new and larger road salt dome, but no takers have yet materialized.

County government put out a request Feb. 3 for proposals for properties in the county’s heavily populated southeast corner that meet specific criteria. Having land lined up would allow the county to approach other local governments in the area to possibly partner up in its construction, according to supporters of the idea.

“This is an interesting opportunity for the county to look at,” County Administrator Peter Austin said. “We have a genuine problem, and we’re looking at a resolution – we have a salt dome that doesn’t hold enough salt for what we use in a season.”

The county is looking for properties at least 8 acres in size with direct access to a county or state highway, located south of Route 176 and east of Route 47, which covers

“Every church needs to start somewhere. All these large traditional churches people see started a long time ago in people’s homes and grew,” Ashwill said. “For us, this has been great and is a nice in-between place. At some point, I’m sure we’ll plan on building a church.”

Worshipping in nontraditional spaces also allows congregants to engage with the church in ways they otherwise would not, said Paul Carlson, pastor at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Huntley.

In Carlson’s nine years at the church, the congregation met at Marlowe Middle School for the first five years and now at Deicke Park Community Room, 11419 S. Route 47, for the past four years.

Carlson said both locations require congregants to help set up the worship space each week, a practice that helps members focus on why they are there. He said that connection often gets lost in the contemporary approach of megachurches.

“Too many churches today are measuring success by how many people come rather than focusing on the spiritual roots and God’s way,” Carlson said. “Churches are becoming more man-centered today, not God-centered.”

While many pastors are embracing the benefits of nontraditional buildings, Erickson said there is one problem with facilities such as his barn. It can be too welcoming at times.

“The squirrels feel very welcomed here,” Erickson said. “So there are some challenges.”

“I really see the building as a tool for the ministry, but the church is not the building. The church is the people that gather together,” Erickson said.

“You can be anywhere. It’s a matter of seeing the space as a tool.”

Erickson’s journey from one nontraditional church setting to another is becoming more common for pastors and congregations looking to grow. There is financial sense, Erickson said, in moving from places such as small strip mall commercial spaces to middle school gyms and even larger barns as membership increases.

But alternative locations also can offer an attractive ambiance for potential members, he said.

“On one hand, you may have someone who doesn’t feel comfortable stepping into a church that is a converted barn,” Erickson said. “But you might also have someone who had a bad experience at a traditional church and associates those experiences with those buildings.

They might have no problem going to a movie theater or a school.”

Cabot Ashwill knows the challenges of finding a place to call home. In October 2010, he left Lakeland Evangelical Free Church in Gurnee with a mission to “plant” a church west of his home congregation.

After meeting in schools and barns, Ashwill and his growing congregation have settled in a 7,000-square-foot unit in a Spring Grove warehouse.

Although LifeSpring Community Church is surrounded by manufacturing and importing businesses in the multiunit industrial building, Ashwill said the space at 2503 Spring Ridge Drive has become a warm and welcoming home for the evangelical congregation.

4 McHenry County schools move PE focus toward lifelong fitness

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The ball moved haltingly as the fifth-graders in Jackie Anderson’s physical education class scrambled to get open.

The game was a new one, rolled out as part a physical education curriculum overhaul for kindergarten through fifth grade at Woodstock Community Unit School District 200’s six elementary schools.

The role school districts play in keeping kids healthy and active has garnered increasing attention during the past decade as childhood obesity numbers worried parents, health officials and policymakers.

But despite the attention – or perhaps because of it – fewer parents would say their school is helping their child be healthier, down 13 percentage points since 2011, according to a Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll released this past September.

The problem might be that not all school districts have the resources, said Keely Krueger, District 200’s director of grants, language and culture.

And not all schools have a grant writer, added Melinda Etnyre, a physical education program instructional coach.

“You have a set amount of resources, and you’re trying to do a lot in many different areas,” Krueger said. “That’s why we are very lucky to have this grant because it is helping us to move things ahead even

District 200 is wrapping up the first year of a three-year, $1.38 million federal grant.

During that first year, the

district revamped its physical education curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade, buying the necessary equipment and tablets for its teachers; set up a series of

workshops and guest speakers for the community; and introduced students to some new activities such as snowshoeing.

“We’re trying to really think about creating lifelong

fitness and what kinds of opportunities can we give them that they can take into the future,” Krueger said.

Daughters of American Revolution seeking members in Fox River Valley SHAW MEDIA ALGONQUIN – The Fox River Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is conducting a membership drive as part of a nationwide celebration to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

patriotism since its formation in 1890.

“Our chapter, which was organized Feb. 7, 2015, will carry out the important mission of the National Society here on the local level,” Chapter Regent Catherine Carlton said.

“We are eager to welcome new members to our chapter, and we have volunteers available to help them research and complete their genealogy in order to apply for membership.”

Because of the ability to exchange and obtain genealogical information over the Internet, interest in joining the DAR is at an all-time high,

with six of the highest years of application submissions occurring in the past decade.

The Genealogical Research System, which is a free online resource provided by the DAR to aid general genealogical research and to assist with the DAR membership process, has made joining the DAR even more accessible to many women. Explore these resources at www.dar.org/grs.

National Society DAR President General Lynn Forney Young said there are nearly 180,000 members of the DAR, serving in nearly 3,000 chapters across the nation and in

several foreign countries.

Since its founding 125 years ago, more than 940,000 women have been inducted into membership. During the current three-year administration coinciding with the 125th anniversary celebration, the organization has issued a challenge to complete 10 million hours of service to America.

Local DAR chapters nationwide are coordinating service projects in honor of DAR’s 125th anniversary throughout the year, and members from coast to coast will participate in the National DAR Day of Service on Oct. 11.

“Here in the Algonquin and Huntley area, the Fox River Valley Chapter looks forward to supporting schools with DAR scholarships and patriotic education, preserving our area’s history and supporting local veteran projects throughout the year,” Carlton said. “We are proud to carry out DAR’s mission to celebrate our American way of life.”

It’s translated into a new outdoor adventures class being piloted at Algonquin-based Community Unit School District 300’s Jacobs High School next year, said Thomas Parisi, who serves as the district coordinator of physical education and health, a new position this year.

The district also is looking to add an athlete-focused strength and conditioning weights class plus dance, yoga and Pilates classes during the

next several years.

District 200 also is exploring those options, which have been more and more popular across the country.

McHenry High School District 156 offers Fitness for Life and Fitness Walking classes plus two levels of dance classes. Some of Crystal Lake-based Community High School District 155 high schools offer Total Body Fitness and dance classes.

“Our job is to prepare stu-

dents for the world,” Parisi said. “That means more of an emphasis on fitness concepts.

That’s not to say you won’t see sports, but it’s more about fitness.”

Only 10 percent of adults use sports as their means of physical fitness, and so a wider variety of classes means students are more likely to encounter an activity they can continue to use as an adult to stay healthy, Parisi said. The district also

is applying for two grants in the hopes that they can buy heart-rate monitors, another tool students may encounter as adults.

“What you’re seeing is a changing of the guard,” Parisi said. “P.E. is not what it used to be. It takes time to implement a systematic change.”

He’d like to see what parents think three or so years down the line when more schools have adopted these new practices.

of McHenry County’s connections with I-90 actually lie within the county – the recently finished full interchange at Route 47 in Huntley is in Kane County, as are I-90’s interchanges with Randall Road and Route 31.

But opponents, such as Diane Evertsen, R-Harvard, question the cost versus the

benefit and point out that spending the money to examine feasibility is no guarantee the state will approve the project. Evertsen was one of two no votes in committee.

“Once they start a study and spending money, there’s no end to it,” Evertsen said.

“It’s a foregone conclusion … we’ll get a study done that fits

into what she does. She’s very determined.”

The $289,608 allocation from the county’s motor fuel tax most likely will pass, given the full County Board approved a resolution of general support for the project last September on a 19-4 vote.

Marengo has been annexing land in an effort to extend city limits to I-90 in hopes of securing a full tollway interchange and being able to capitalize on any development that comes as a result. A developer recently bought 255 acres of an 831-acre farm in Marengo in January for $4.7 million near the proposed interchange.

County Board Chairman Joe Gottemoller cited a full interchange as a boon for the

Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Cary, Fox River Grove, Lakewood and most of Crystal Lake and Huntley. Eligible properties cannot be located in sensitive aquifer or groundwater protection areas. The deadline to apply is April 2.

Although the concept is in its early stages, it has its supporters and opponents on the County Board. Backers allege the existing dome’s size and location are costing taxpayers more money, while opponents allege building a second dome will be an unnecessary expense.

The salt dome at the Division of Transportation’s headquarters west of Woodstock in unincorporated Hartland Township can hold 6,500 tons, but winter road salt use averages 10,000 to 12,000 tons.

Having the space to store a year’s worth of salt at once, according to the bid specifications, would protect the county and any partnering governments from “dramatic swings” in the price and from shortages that have plagued local governments trying to fill their domes during the summer.

The dome’s rural location is another cost-prohibitive problem, Austin said. “Why is it that we need toll road access where the lowest population density is?” Evertsen said. “Is this to speed the exit of taxpayers from McHenry County?”
