sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – District 154 and its teachers union will soon meet at the bargaining table to negotiate a new contract with the current, three-year deal set to expire in August.

District board members recently met in a closed session to lay the groundwork for negotiations. Formal contract talks between the board and representatives from the

Marengo Education Association should start later this spring, Superintendent Dan Bertrand said.

“They will do it sometime this spring,” he said. “Typically, we are done negotiating by the first week in June. Hopefully, that’s the case again this year.”

Board members and teachers from the Marengo Education Association usually have agreed upon contract terms during the summertime in

each of the past four contracts, Bertrand said.

The current contract went into effect Aug. 15, 2011, and expires Aug. 14. It included a 1.6 percent salary raise for teachers in the 2012-13 school year and 0.6 percent salary raise this school year.

Overall, the contract created about $533,000 in new spending for the district, according to the terms listed in the agreement.

Attorney relocates office after fire on Christmas

By JOSEPH BUSTOS jbustos@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Inside of a house that is about 150 years old, divorce attorney Paula Rieghns still conducts business, even though not all of the furniture has arrived, and files are still in boxes.

Rieghns is in the process of moving in and setting up a new office at 205 N. State St. Her previous office at 821 E. Grant St. was destroyed by a fire on Christmas night.

Out of the six units connected in the strip mall, Rieghns’ office was the only one affected by the fire.

Marengo Police Chief Joseph Hallman said the fire is still under investigation. Everything in the office was destroyed or severely damaged “We lost everything,” Rieghns said. “It was like a bomb went off, everything was gone.”

After the fire, Rieghns and business manager Jennifer Drendel went to work to find a new location.

They found the new location at 205 N. State St. about a week after the fire and started moving the first week of January. Moving to the new location and buying new equipment and furniture cost about $20,000. Insurance covered the expenses. Furniture is in the process of being delivered and file cabinets have been moved in.

HUNTLEY – Police officer Chuck McGrath didn’t know he would be saving someone’s life when he saw a car veer into oncoming traffic on Route 47 this past summer.

McGrath, a four-year veteran at the Huntley Police Department, was traveling south on Route 47 near Regency Parkway in Huntley about 7 a.m. July 20 when a small, red SUV crossed the median into the southbound lanes.

The 22-year-old driver turned his car around, exited Route 47 and pulled his car to the side of Regency Parkway.

The driver immediately got out, clutched his chest and fell to the ground moments later, losing consciousness.

“After talking to the medical personnel who worked on this young man for a couple of days at the hospital, they directly attributed it to officer McGrath’s actions in saving his life,” Police Chief John Perkins said.

Witnessing the car veer into traffic, McGrath followed the driver to Regency Parkway. The unidentified male told McGrath before losing consciousness he had been stung by a bee and that he was allergic to the insects.

If the Red Raiders thought it would be an easy road through the Blue Thunder to win the regional title Feb. 20, Belvidere North gave them everything they could handle through the game’s first 16 minutes. Huntley had a weapon of its own, however, in sophomore forward Ali Andrews, for whom the Blue Thunder had no answer .

Andrews scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to help the Red Raiders take a six-point lead into halftime. From there, they steadily built a double-digit lead en route to a 49-35 win to capture the Class 4A Jefferson Regional title. It marks the sixth regional title in eight seasons for the Red Raiders (26-3), who also tied the school record for wins in a season that was set last year.

“I saw they were really packing it in down low, but I knew I had to bring my game and just play under control and play how I play,” Andrews said. “I also looked to kick it out to our guards to get good shots.”

Belivdere North’s 3-point shooting put the pressure on Huntley in the first half. Five of the Blue Thunder’s seven field goals in the first half were 3-pointers. Guard Haley Grana especially torched Huntley’s defense, hitting three 3-pointers, all in the first quarter. Despite playing a zone defense, Andrews still hurt Belvidere North in the paint.

“She’s the real deal,” Blue Thunder coach Aaron Leonard said of Andrews. “You watch her play live and then you scout her, but once your team actually plays her, you realize how good she is. She has to be accounted for every single second of the game.”

Although Huntley led 36-24 going into the fourth quarter, the Red Raiders managed only one field goal in the fourth. They shot well enough at the free-throw line, making 11 of 16 attempts, to comfortably maintain their lead. The Blue Thunder pulled within seven with 2:54 left in the game, but the Red Raiders held them without another field goal the rest of the way.

Senior forward Sam Andrews finished with 11 points for Huntley, including two 3-pointers, while Barreto and Bethany Zornow each finished with four points.

“It’s always special to be able to win in the postseason and to win a regional title,” Huntley coach Steve Raethz said. “This was a definite goal of ours heading into the postseason.

I’m just really pleased for our girls.

After the driver collapsed to the ground, McGrath performed rescue breaths until the paramedics arrived.

The lifesaving incident was captured by a video camera located on the dashboard of McGrath’s squad car.

Village board members shared the video during a meeting Feb. 20, before Perkins handed McGrath the department’s Lifesaving Award.

Eight Huntley officers have previously received the honor since the department started the program in 2007. On Feb. 20, board members and village staff gave McGrath a standing ovation.

“When you see this video, it really hits home on what these guys and girls do and what a great department we really do have,” said Village President Chuck Sass. “I’m actually tearing up talking about it.”

Files also had online backups, Rieghns said.

“It hasn’t affected quality of work, and it hasn’t affected my ability to represent them and make sure their best interest is being served,” Rieghns said.

Prior to the fire, Rieghns had been at her Grant Street office for about six months, and had just finished setting up and decorating the office with items such as art on the walls, only to have to move again.

They had to order new furniture, new computers and printers, and new desks, as well as plan to decorate another office.

“But we’re going to make this place work too,” Rieghns said.

“We’re happy to be here,” Reighns said. “It’s a great location, it feels very homey it feels very Marengo like, it’s a nice locaiton.”
