Costs affect college choices Counselors: More students cautious about taking out loans

ecoleman@shawmedia.com JOHNSBURG – The process was really stressful, but Kara Stahl knows where she wants to go to college in the fall.

“There’s a lot of things you have to fill out – the application, the scholarships – and then you have to decide if you want to play a sport, if you want to go to a big school or a smaller school,” Stahl said.

“There’s a lot of decision making, I guess.”

The Johnsburg High School senior is still working out the financial aspect, but the plan is to go to Augustana College in Rock Island.

This is the time of year – after spending spring and summer of junior year visiting colleges and the fall of senior year filling out college applications – the college-bound turn

their attention to figuring out how they’re going to pay to go to the school of their choice, filling out financial aid forms and applying for scholarships.

Many also will turn to student loans.

About 64 percent of college graduates in Illinois have student loan debt, according to 2012 numbers compiled by the Project on Student Debt.

Nationwide, outstanding student loan debt stood at $1.027 trillion at the end of September, according to the Federal Reserve.

Stahl isn’t worried about student loans, she said. She’d have to get some no matter where she goes, and said it will be a manageable amount.

But a growing number of high school students are looking cautiously at student loans, said Megan Stenberg, a guidance counselor at Johns-

burg High School.

“A lot of students now, they’re more aware of student loans, and so I think their worry is that they don’t want to take out student loans,” she said. “They’re afraid of them, and I think that’s the biggest difference. Years ago, you didn’t really think like that.”

JC Brown, a counselor at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, agrees that the word “loan” scares students.

On the financial aid and scholarship handout Prairie Ridge’s college and career center gives students, the flip side now lays out a college loan repayment schedule, showing students what their payments would look like depending on how much they take out in loans.

“It’s gotten so expensive, and with the economy and how it’s been for the last cou-

ple of years, it’s definitely on parents’ mind and students’ minds,” Brown said. “I’ve noticed a lot more students working to help pay for college.”

Parents especially are verbalizing their concerns about the financial side more than they used too, said Shannon Landwehr, the director of Woodstock High School’s counseling office.

“I think that especially before 2008, there was a feeling that, yes, I’ll take out the loans,” she said. “It won’t be a big deal . I think students are realizing – probably because they’re hearing from their parents – the money tree is not right outside our house.

It doesn’t exist.”

Transport groups rescue animals scheduled to be euthanized

ecoleman@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The white van that pulled into the parking lot of Animal House Shelter in Huntley was filled ceiling to floor with cages.

A black Labrador mix named May was in one.

Her time was up at a southern Illinois pound where she had been sent after getting caught running with another dog, said Jeannette Schulz, the executive director of On Angels’ Wings.

“She was obviously loved,” Schulz said. “She knows sit and paw.”

Another held P.J. – short for Papa John – a 12-year-old mix that looks a little like a miniature husky. Blind in one eye and with a limp, Schulz is hoping for a “senior-to-senior” adoption where an older person adopts an older pet.

Cooing to each dog, Emily Huetson transferred five of the dogs, including P.J. and May, to the On Angels’ Wings van.

Both animals were set to be euthanized unless another shelter agreed to take them, said Huetson, the animal welfare director for On Angels’ Wings. She started the

MARENGO – City officials are confident that the Illinois Tollway Authority will make a formal commitment to an interchange sometime after initial planning begins in May on reconstructing the Route 23 bridge over Interstate 90.

The confidence boost comes after City Administrator Gary Boden and Marengo’s engineers from HR Green recently met with tollway officials and the Illinois Department of Transportation about the possibility of an I-90 interchange, which Marengo has long coveted.

“We feel a lot more confident that an interchange will come,” Boden said. “Although without formal recognition, we feel likely that the bridge will be built to accommodate an interchange. That’s a big move right there.”

The tollway needs to reconstruct the Route 23 bridge as part of its the widening of I-90 from Elgin to Rockford.

Marengo officials have always considered the Route 23 bridge project as a stepping stone to a full interchange meant to transform the city’s economy.

During their recent meeting, state transportation officials indicated that Marengo engineers would need to develop a rough bridge design by

HUNTLEY – Twenty-six acres of commercial real estate will soon be on the auctioning block, nearly five years after the economic recession derailed a developer’s Huntley shopping center plans and forced a mortgage foreclosure.

McHenry County Judge Thomas Meyer last week set a public auction for March 14 that would award the highest bidder 26 acres of vacant land at the northeast corner of Route 47 and Reed Road in Huntley.

Village officials have always eyed the land as prime commercial real estate dating to 2001, when they annexed the property into Huntley’s limits.

With the economy slowly recovering, officials believe that a retail outlet has a better chance at success than the development board members approved at the location during the height of the economic downturn in March 2008.

“It’s an important parcel in the village, and we anticipate whoever buys it will be in communication with us,” Village Manager Dave Johnson said.

“It remains in our comprehensive plan as a commercial property. That was the vision (in 2001), and that remains the vision.”

“When we annexed that property, we didn’t know that a hospital would be coming. … We certainly see it as a viable corner to the community,” he said.

Officials recognized that viability in 2008, when the Rosati Group proposed a 26-acre shopping center at the prominent intersection. The development included a Walgreens, a big-box retailer, a restaurant and future projects.

But the recession hit, and the project struggled to start, Johnson said. Developers managed to build the Walgreens, but the pharmacy is the only business that exists at the corner.

The former Midwest Bank & Trust Co. filed a mortgage foreclosure against the developers in September 2009, and the process has since worked its way through the courts.

“We worked long and hard to get that Walgreens open before the world decided to turn over,” Johnson said. “We’ve known for quite some time that property would end up in the state that it has.”

“Sometimes it will be a mom and her kittens or a load of puppies,” Huetson said. “You just never know.

There’s just such a need in the south, and we’re happy to have a transport that makes it up here. We love it.”

Novak, a Lyons resident, is one of a series of drivers who can bring the animals from as far as Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee, Schulz said. He starts his day at about 7 a.m. and gets home about 12 hours later after making stops in Tinley Park, Joliet and Huntley.

The drives can get noisy, but most of the animals calm down once the van gets moving, he said. They’ll start to get noisy again when they need to need to go to the bathroom.

Novak started running transports about a year and a half ago, he said. He had been fostering animals at the time, and another driver asked if he would take over.

“It’s to save the animals,” he said. “My opinion is there are no bad animals, there are bad people. That’s pretty much it. That’s really why I bring them up. That’s why I volunteer my time to do this.”

Besides donating their time, many drivers cover the transportation costs, including gas, Schulz said. Some volunteer pilots also run transports.

The way schools look at post-secondary education is changing, Landwehr said.

“At least in our district there is a realization that you need some education and training after high school, and while you may not realize what that is as an 18-year-old in high school, we want to provide you with the opportunity to what you want after high school,” Landwehr said.

And that education may not be at a four-year college, she said, adding that technical schools, associate programs and other training are becoming more acceptable.

“They’ll even euthanize pregnant moms, pregnant mom dogs and pregnant mom cats, just due to space, and if nobody claims them in a certain amount of time, they’re gone.

It’s really sad.”

Volunteers at the shelters will send out emails to other shelters, letting them know the details of the animals’ situations, and the area shelters will select the animals they think they can adopt out, she said.

About 60 percent of the cats and dogs On Angels’ Wings adopts out come to McHenry County through these transports, Schulz said, adding that there aren’t as many pets being taken to shelters or abandoned in McHenry County as in other parts of the country, not enough to cover the demand for pets.

On Angels’ Wings wasn’t the only shelter picking up dogs that cold Thursday afternoon.
